The Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula is generalized to any dimensional scheme by Abbes-Kato-Saito. In this paper, we introduce two methods of localization of the characteristic classes for sheaves of rank 1 and compare them. As a corollary of this comparison, we obtain a refinement of a formula proved by Abbes-Saito without denominator for a smooth sheaf of rank 1 which is clean with respect to the boundary.
We give explicit formulas for the local multiplicative convolution functors which express the local monodromies of the convolution of two $\ell$-adic sheaves on the torus ${\mathbb G}_m$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field in terms of the local monodromies of the factors.
We provide an effective version of Katz' criterion for finiteness of the monodromy group of a lisse, pure of weight zero, $\ell$-adic sheaf on a normal variety over a finite field, depending on the numerical complexity of the sheaf
The goal of this paper is to motivate a boundedness conjecture on nearby slopes of $\ell$-adic sheaves in positive characteristic, and to prove it for smooth curves. For a constructible $\ell$-adic sheaf, we prove the finiteness of the set of nearby slopes associated to a given morphism. For the constant sheaf, we prove the vanishing of nearby slopes in case of generalized semi-stable reduction.
Let $X$ be a smooth connected algebraic curve over an algebraically closed field $k$. We study the deformation of $\ell$-adic Galois representations of the function field of $X$ while keeping the local Galois representations at all places undeformed.
We propose a conjecture on the relative twist formula of $\ell$-adic sheaves, which can be viewed as a generalization of Kato-Saito's conjecture. We verify this conjecture under some transversal assumptions. We also define a relative cohomological characteristic class and prove that its formation is compatible with proper push-forward. A conjectural relation is also given between the relative twist formula and the relative cohomological characteristic class.
For K and L two l-adic perverse sheaves on the one-dimensional torus over the algebraic closure of a finite field, we show that the local monodromies of their convolution K*L at its points of non-smoothness is completely determined by the local monodromies of K and L. This generalizes a previous result of N. Katz for the case where K and L are smooth, tame at 0 and totally wild at infinity.
We introduce a notion of compatibility for families $(\mathcal{F}_{\ell})_{\ell}$ of bounded constructible $\ell$-adic complexes of étale sheaves on schemes. For schemes of finite type over a field, this notion is preserved by the usual six functors. We prove that the compatibility of a family is preserved by the nearby cycles functor and by the linearized $\varepsilon$-factors introduced recently by the author. We establish independence of $\ell$ for the characteristic cycles and characteristic $\varepsilon$-cycles of compatible families.
Given a Galois étale map of varieties $π:Y\to X$ and an $\ell$-adic sheaf or derived category object $P\in D^b_c(Y,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, we study two cohomological operations: the tensor direct image and (in the case of perverse sheaves) the convolution direct image, which give objects of $D^b_c(X,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, and can be used to improve the estimates on some partial exponential sums and the number of rational points on certain varieties.
The Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula calculates the l-adic Euler-Poincare number of an l-adic sheaf on a curve by an invariant produced by the wild ramification of the l-adic sheaf named Swan class. A. Abbes, K. Kato and T. Saito generalize this formula to any dimensional scheme. In this paper, assuming the strong resolution of singularities we prove a localized version of a formula proved by A. Abbes and T. Saito using the characteristic class of an l-adic sheaf. As an application, we prove a conductor formula in equal characteristic.
Let $K$ be a local field, $X$ the Drinfel'd symmetric space $X$ of dimension $d$ over $K$ and ${\mathfrak X}$ the natural formal ${\mathcal O}_K$-scheme underlying $X$; thus $G={\rm GL}\sb {d+1}(K)$ acts on $X$ and ${\mathfrak X}$. Given a $K$-rational $G$-representation $M$ we construct a $G$-equivariant subsheaf ${\mathcal M}^0_{{\mathcal O}_{\dot{K}}}$ of ${\mathcal O}_K$-lattices in the constant sheaf $M$ on ${\mathfrak X}$. We study the cohomology of sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on $X$ (or ${\mathfrak X}$) with coefficients in ${\mathcal M}^0_{{\mathcal O}_{\dot{K}}}$. In the…
Let $S$ be a noetherian scheme and $f\colon X\to S$ be a smooth morphism of relative dimension 1. For a locally constant sheaf on the complement of a divisor in $X$ at over $S$, Deligne and Laumon proved that the universal local acyclicity is equivalent to the local constancy of Swan conductors. In this article, assuming the universal local acyclicity, we show an analogous result of the continuity of local epsilon factors. We also give a generalization of this result to a family of isolated singularities.
Let $K\in L^1(\mathbb R)$ and let $f\in L^\infty(\mathbb R)$ be two functions on $\mathbb R$. The convolution $$(K\ast f)(x)=\int_{\mathbb R}K(x-y)f(y)dy$$ can be considered as an average of $f$ with weight defined by $K$. Wiener's Tauberian theorem says that under suitable conditions, if $$\lim_{x\to \infty}(K\ast f)(x)=\lim_{x\to \infty} (K\ast A)(x)$$ for some constant $A$, then $$\lim_{x\to \infty}f(x)=A.$$ We prove the following $\ell$-adic analogue of this theorem: Suppose $K,F, G$ are perverse $\ell$-adic sheaves on the affine line $\mathbb A$ over an algebraically closed field of chara…
We consider the rigid monoidal category of character sheaves on a smooth commutative group scheme $G$ over a finite field $k$ and expand the scope of the function-sheaf dictionary from connected commutative algebraic groups to this setting. We find the group of isomorphism classes of character sheaves on $G$ and show that it is an extension of the group of characters of $G(k)$ by a cohomology group determined by the component group scheme of $G$. We also classify all morphisms in the category character sheaves on $G$. As an application, we study character sheaves on Greenberg transforms of loc…
We establish several new properties of the $p$-adic Jacquet-Langlands functor defined by Scholze in terms of the cohomology of the Lubin-Tate tower. In particular, we reprove Scholze's basic finiteness theorems, prove a duality theorem, and show a kind of partial Künneth formula. Using these results, we deduce bounds on Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, together with some new vanishing and nonvanishing results. Our key new tool is the six functor formalism with solid almost $\mathcal{O}^+/p$-coefficients developed recently by the second author [Man22]. One major point of this paper is to extend the …
We calculate the local Fourier transformations for a class of $\bar{\mathbb Q}_\ell$-sheaves. In particular, we verify a conjecture of Laumon and Malgrange. As an application, we calculate the local monodromy of $\ell$-adic hypergeometric sheaves introduced by Katz. We also discuss the characteristic $p$ analogue of the Turrittin-Levelt Theorem for $D$-modules. The method used in this paper can be used to show a conjecture of Ramero which states that the Fourier transformation of an analytic sheaf with meromorphic ramification still has meromorphic ramification.
In a previous paper, we constructed a category of (phi, Gamma)-modules associated to any adic space over Q_p with the property that the etale (phi, Gamma)-modules correspond to etale Q_p-local systems; these involve sheaves of period rings for Scholze's pro-etale topology. In this paper, we first extend Kiehl's theory of coherent sheaves on rigid analytic spaces to a theory of pseudocoherent sheaves on adic spaces, then construct a corresponding theory of pseudocoherent (phi, Gamma)-modules. We then relate these objects to a more explicit construction in case the space comes equipped with a su…
In this article we propose a geometric description of Arthur packets for $p$-adic groups using vanishing cycles of perverse sheaves. Our approach is inspired by the 1992 book by Adams, Barbasch and Vogan on the Langlands classification of admissible representations of real groups and follows the direction indicated by Vogan in his 1993 paper on the Langlands correspondence. Using vanishing cycles, we introduce and study a functor from the category of equivariant perverse sheaves on the moduli space of certain Langlands parameters to local systems on the regular part of the conormal bundle for …
We develop a full 6-functor formalism for $p$-torsion étale sheaves in rigid-analytic geometry. More concretely, we use the recently developed condensed mathematics by Clausen--Scholze to associate to every small v-stack (e.g. rigid-analytic variety) $X$ with pseudouniformizer $π$ an $\infty$-category $\mathcal D^a_\square(\mathcal O^+_X/π)$ of "derived quasicoherent complete topological $\mathcal O^+_X/π$-modules" on $X$. We then construct the six functors $\otimes$, $\underline{Hom}$, $f^*$, $f_*$, $f_!$ and $f^!$ in this setting and show that they satisfy all the expected compatibilities, s…
We define formal vector bundles with marked sections on Hilbert modular schemes and we show how to use them to construct modular sheaves with an integrable meromorphic connection and a filtration which, in degree 0, gives to us a $p$-adic interpolation of the usual Hodge filtration. We relate it with the sheaf of overconvergent Hilbert modular forms.
In this paper, we are going to establish a simultaneous generalization of the relative Iwasawa theory proposed by Kedlaya-Pottharst and the relative $p$-adic Hodge theory after Kedlaya-Liu. We call this Hodge-Iwasawa theory in the sense that one could apply the theory to study noncommutative Iwasawa cohomology and noncommutative Iwasawa theories in families and meanwhile one could apply the theory to study the deformation theory of étale local systems or families of representations of fundamental groups or the equivariant constructible $p$-adic sheaves, with more sophisticated point of view co…
In this paper, we define and construct canonical filtered $F$-crystals with $G$-structure over the integral models for Shimura varieties of abelian type at hyperspecial level defined by Kisin. We check that these are related by $p$-adic comparison theorems to the usual lisse sheaves, and as an application we also use this to show that the Galois representations generated from the $p$-adic étale cohomology of Shimura varieties with nontrivial coefficient sheaves are crystalline, at least in the case of proper abelian type Shimura varieties.
Deligne conjectured that a single l-adic lisse sheaf on a normal variety over a finite field can be embedded into a compatible system of l'-adic lisse sheaves with various l'. Drinfeld used Lafforgue's result as an input and proved this conjecture when the variety is smooth. We consider an analogous existence problem for a regular flat scheme over Z and prove some cases using Lafforgue's result and the work of Barnet-Lamb, Gee, Geraghty, and Taylor.
Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus g over a finite field F_q of characteristic p. Consider primes l different from p. We formulate some questions related to a well known counting formula of Drinfeld. Drinfeld counts rank 2, irreducible l-adic sheaves on the base change X_n of X to F_{q^n} as n varies. We would like to count rank 2, irreducible mod l sheaves on X_n as n varies. Drinfeld's l-adic count gives an upper bound for the mod l count. We conjecture that Drinfeld's count is the correct asymptotic for the count of rank 2, irreducible mod l sheaves on X_n as n varies with (n,\ell)…
We generalize some of the results of Andreatta, Iovita, and Pilloni and the author to Hodge type Shimura varieties having non-empty ordinary locus. For any $p$-adic weight $κ$, we give a geometric definition of the space of overconvergent modular forms of weight $κ$ in terms of sections of a sheaf. We show that our sheaves live in analytic families, interpolating the classical sheaves for integral weights. We define an action of the Hecke algebra, including a completely continuous operator at $p$. In some simple cases, we also build the eigenvariety.
This is a completely rewritten version of the paper formerly entitled "Sheaves of Iwasawa modules, moment maps and the $\ell$-adic elliptic polylogarithm". The proof of the main result is also simplified. In the paper we study systematically the $\ell$-adic realization of the elliptic polylogarithm in the context of sheaves of Iwasawa modules. This leads to a description of the elliptic polylogarithm in terms of elliptic units. As an application we prove a precise relation between $\ell$-adic Eisenstein classes and elliptic Soulé elements. This allows to give a new proof of the formula for the…
Let $C$ be a smooth curve over a finite field in characteristic $p$ and let $M$ be an overconvergent $F$-isocrystal over $C$. After replacing $C$ with a dense open subset $M$ obtains a slope filtration, whose steps interpolate the Frobenius eigenvalues of $M$ with bounded slope. This is a purely $p$-adic phenomenon; there is no counterpart in the theory of lisse $\ell$-adic sheaves. The graded pieces of this slope filtration correspond to lisse $p$-adic sheaves, which we call geometric. Geometric lisse $p$-adic sheaves are mysterious. While they fit together to build an overconvergent $F$-isoc…
Sen attached to each p-adic Galois representation of a p-adic field a multiset of numbers called generalized Hodge-Tate weights. In this paper, we discuss a rigidity of these numbers in a geometric family. More precisely, we consider a p-adic local system on a rigid analytic variety over a p-adic field and show that the multiset of generalized Hodge-Tate weights of the local system is constant. The proof uses the p-adic Riemann-Hilbert correspondence by Liu and Zhu, a Sen-Fontaine decompletion theory in the relative setting, and the theory of formal connections. We also discuss basic propertie…
The goal of this work is to construct a perverse t-structure on the infinity-category of l-adic LG-equivariant sheaves on the loop Lie algebra Lg and to show that the affine Grothendieck-Springer sheaf S is perverse. Moreover, S is an intermediate extension of its restriction to the locus of ``compact" elements with regular semi-simple reduction. Note that classical methods do not apply in our situation because LG and Lg are infinite-dimensional ind-schemes.
In mixed characteristic and in equal characteristic $p$ we define a filtration on topological Hochschild homology and its variants. This filtration is an analogue of the filtration of algebraic $K$-theory by motivic cohomology. Its graded pieces are related in mixed characteristic to the complex $AΩ$ constructed in our previous work, and in equal characteristic $p$ to crystalline cohomology. Our construction of the filtration on $\mathrm{THH}$ is via flat descent to semiperfectoid rings. As one application, we refine the construction of the $AΩ$-complex by giving a cohomological construction o…
We introduce a notion of complexity of a complex of ell-adic sheaves on a quasi-projective variety and prove that the six operations are "continuous", in the sense that the complexity of the output sheaves is bounded solely in terms of the complexity of the input sheaves. A key feature of complexity is that it provides bounds for the sum of Betti numbers that, in many interesting cases, can be made uniform in the characteristic of the base field. As an illustration, we discuss a few simple applications to horizontal equidistribution results for exponential sums over finite fields.
In order to compute with $l$--adic sheaves or crystals on a line over $\mathbb{F} _q$ a low-technology alternative to the traditional computation with the Hecke operators on the automorphic side could be helpful. A program which has evolved over the years in our discussions with M. Kontsevich centers around the concept that, in the geometric case, there must exist certain multiplication laws on the Galois--representation side that could be thought of as precursors of the automorphic lifts: non-abelian Abel's theorems, and their restrictions to diagonal, Clausen identities. To a varying extent,…
We show that integral monodromy groups of Kloosterman $\ell$-adic sheaves of rank $n\ge 2$ on $\mathbb{G}_m/\mathbb{F}_q$ are as large as possible when the characteristic $\ell$ is large enough, depending only on the rank. This variant of Katz's results over $\mathbb{C}$ was known by works of Gabber, Larsen, Nori and Hall under restrictions such as $\ell$ large enough depending on $\operatorname{char}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ with an ineffective constant, which is unsuitable for applications. We use the theory of finite groups of Lie type to extend Katz's ideas, in particular the classification of maxim…
We give a new construction of $p$-adic overconvergent Hilbert modular forms by using Scholze's perfectoid Shimura varieties at infinite level and the Hodge--Tate period map. The definition is analytic, closely resembling that of complex Hilbert modular forms as holomorphic functions satisfying a transformation property under congruence subgroups. As a special case, we first revisit the case of elliptic modular forms, extending recent work of Chojecki, Hansen and Johansson. We then construct sheaves of geometric Hilbert modular forms, as well as subsheaves of integral modular forms, and vary ou…
