We show that integral monodromy groups of Kloosterman $\ell$-adic sheaves of rank $n\ge 2$ on $\mathbb{G}_m/\mathbb{F}_q$ are as large as possible when the characteristic $\ell$ is large enough, depending only on the rank. This variant of Katz's results over $\mathbb{C}$ was known by works of Gabber, Larsen, Nori and Hall under restrictions such as $\ell$ large enough depending on $\operatorname{char}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ with an ineffective constant, which is unsuitable for applications. We use the theory of finite groups of Lie type to extend Katz's ideas, in particular the classification of maximal subgroups of Aschbacher and Kleidman-Liebeck. These results will apply to study reductions of hyper-Kloosterman sums in forthcoming work.
A certain "condition (S)" on reductive algebraic groups was introduced in [GT2], in which a slightly stronger condition (S+) was shown to have very strong consequences. We show that a wide class of Kloosterman and hypergeometric sheaves satisfy (S+). For this class of sheaves, we determine possible structure of their monodromy groups.
Deligne constructed a remarkable local system on $\bP^1-\{0,\infty\}$ attached to a family of Kloosterman sums. Katz calculated its monodromy and asked whether there are Kloosterman sheaves for general reductive groups and which automorphic forms should be attached to these local systems under the Langlands correspondence. Motivated by work of Gross and Frenkel-Gross we find an explicit family of such automorphic forms and even a simple family of automorphic sheaves in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. We use these automorphic sheaves to construct l-adic Kloosterman sheaves for…
We provide an effective version of Katz' criterion for finiteness of the monodromy group of a lisse, pure of weight zero, $\ell$-adic sheaf on a normal variety over a finite field, depending on the numerical complexity of the sheaf
Let $X$ be a smooth connected algebraic curve over an algebraically closed field $k$. We study the deformation of $\ell$-adic Galois representations of the function field of $X$ while keeping the local Galois representations at all places undeformed.
Let $C$ be a smooth curve over a finite field in characteristic $p$ and let $M$ be an overconvergent $F$-isocrystal over $C$. After replacing $C$ with a dense open subset $M$ obtains a slope filtration, whose steps interpolate the Frobenius eigenvalues of $M$ with bounded slope. This is a purely $p$-adic phenomenon; there is no counterpart in the theory of lisse $\ell$-adic sheaves. The graded pieces of this slope filtration correspond to lisse $p$-adic sheaves, which we call geometric. Geometric lisse $p$-adic sheaves are mysterious. While they fit together to build an overconvergent $F$-isoc…
We construct the Frobenius structure on a rigid connection $\mathrm{Be}_{\check{G}}$ on $\mathbb{G}_m$ for a split reductive group $\check{G}$ introduced by Frenkel-Gross. These data form a $\check{G}$-valued overconvergent $F$-isocrystal $\mathrm{Be}_{\check{G}}^{\dagger}$ on $\mathbb{G}_{m,\mathbb{F}_p}$, which is the $p$-adic companion of the Kloosterman $\check{G}$-local system $\mathrm{Kl}_{\check{G}}$ constructed by Heinloth-Ngô-Yun. By exploring the structure of the underlying differential equation, we calculate the monodromy group of $\mathrm{Be}_{\check{G}}^{\dagger}$ when $\check{G}$…
We show that some hypergeometric monodromy groups in Sp(4,Z) split as free or amalgamated products and hence by cohomological considerations give examples of Zariski dense, non-arithmetic monodromy groups of real rank 2. In particular, we show that the monodromy of the natural quotient of the Dwork family of quintic threefolds in P^{4} splits as Z*Z/5. As a consequence, for a smooth quintic threefold X we show that a certain group of autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves is an Artin group of dihedral type.
In this paper we develop a general method to prove independence of algebraic monodromy groups in compatible systems of representations, and we apply it to deduce independence results for compatible systems both in automorphic and in positive characteristic settings. In the abstract case, we prove an independence result for compatible systems of Lie-irreducible representations, from which we deduce an independence result for compatible systems admitting what we call a Lie-irreducible decomposition. In the case of geometric compatible systems of Galois representations arising from certain classe…
In the first three sections, we develop some basic facts about hypergeometric sheaves on the multiplicative group ${\mathbb G}_m$ in characteristic $p >0$. In the fourth and fifth sections, we specialize to quite special classses of hypergeomtric sheaves. We give relatively "simple" formulas for their trace functions, and a criterion for them to have finite monodromy. In the next section, we prove that three of them have finite monodromy groups. We then give some results on finite complex linear groups. We next use these group theoretic results to show that one of our local systems, of rank $24…
We first develop some basic facts about hypergeometric sheaves on the multiplicative group ${\mathbb G}_m$ in characteristic $p >0$. Certain of their Kummer pullbacks extend to irreducible local systems on the affine line in characteristic $p>0$. One of these, of rank $23$ in characteristic $p=3$, turns out to have the Conway group $\mathrm{Co}_2$, in its irreducible orthogonal representation of degree $23$, as its arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups.
Let k be a field not of characteristic two and L be a set of almost all rational primes invertible in k. Suppose we have a variety X/k and strictly compatible system {M_ell -> X : ell in L} of constructible F_ell-sheaves. If the system is orthogonally or symplectically self-dual, then the geometric monodromy group of M_ell is a subgroup of a corresponding isometry group G_ell over F_ell, and we say it has big monodromy if it contains the derived subgroup DG_ell=[G_ell,G_ell]. We prove a theorem which gives sufficient conditions for M_ell to have big monodromy. We apply the theorem to explicit …
Let X be a smooth curve over a finite field of characteristic p, let E be a number field, and consider an E-compatible system of lisse sheaves on the curve X. For each place lambda of E not lying over p, the lambda-component of the system is a lisse E_lambda-sheaf on X, whose associated arithmetic monodromy group is an algebraic group over the local field E_lambda. We use Serre's theory of Frobenius tori and Lafforgue's proof of Deligne's conjecture to show that when the E-compatible system is semisimple and pure of some integer weight, the isomorphism type of the identity component of these m…
We construct explicit local systems on the affine line in characteristic $p>2$, whose geometric monodromy groups are the finite symplectic groups $Sp_{2n}(q)$ for all $n \ge 2$, and others whose geometric monodromy groups are the special unitary groups $SU_n(q)$ for all odd $n \ge 3$, and $q$ any power of $p$, in their total Weil representations. One principal merit of these local systems is that their associated trace functions are one-parameter families of exponential sums of a very simple, i.e., easy to remember, form. We also exhibit hypergeometric sheaves on $G_m$, whose geometric monodro…
Many exponential sums over finite fields, including Gauss sums and Kloosterman sums, arise as the Fourier transform with respect to a character of the trace function of an $\ell$-adic sheaf on a commutative algebraic group. We study the equidistribution of these sums when the sheaf is fixed but the character varies over larger and larger extensions of the finite field. For the additive group, monodromy governs equidistribution by a theorem of Deligne. A few years ago, Katz solved the multiplicative variant of the question in a work where Tannakian ideas play an essential role.
We calculate the local Fourier transformations for a class of $\bar{\mathbb Q}_\ell$-sheaves. In particular, we verify a conjecture of Laumon and Malgrange. As an application, we calculate the local monodromy of $\ell$-adic hypergeometric sheaves introduced by Katz. We also discuss the characteristic $p$ analogue of the Turrittin-Levelt Theorem for $D$-modules. The method used in this paper can be used to show a conjecture of Ramero which states that the Fourier transformation of an analytic sheaf with meromorphic ramification still has meromorphic ramification.
We use hypergeometric sheaves on $G_m/F_q$, which are particular sorts of rigid local systems, to construct explicit local systems whose arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups are the finite general linear groups $GL_n(q)$ for any $n \ge 2$ and and any prime power $q$, so long as $q > 3$ when $n=2$. This paper continues a program of finding simple (in the sense of simple to remember) families of exponential sums whose monodromy groups are certain finite groups of Lie type, cf. [Gr], [KT1], [KT2], [KT3] for (certain) finite symplectic and unitary groups, or certain sporadic groups, cf. [KRL]…

We give a group theoretic definition of "local models" as sought after in the theory of Shimura varieties. These are projective schemes over the integers of a $p$-adic local field that are expected to model the singularities of integral models of Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure. Our local models are certain mixed characteristic degenerations of Grassmannian varieties; they are obtained by extending constructions of Beilinson, Drinfeld, Gaitsgory and the second-named author to mixed characteristics and to the case of general (tamely ramified) reductive groups. We study the sing…
