In this paper, we study metrics of quantum states. These metrics are natural generalization of trace metric and Bures metric. We will prove that the metrics are joint convex and contractive under quantum operation. Our results can find important application in studying the geometry of quantum states and is useful to detect entanglement.
The quantum information and the Bures metric are equivalent to each other, except at points where the rank of the density matrix changes. Here we show that by slightly modifying the definition of the Bures metric, the quantum information will be fully equivalent to the Bures metric without exception.
The aim of this paper is to provide a method for explicit computation of the Bures metric over the space of $N$-level quantum system, based on the coset parametrization of density matrices.
An explicit parameterization for the state space of an $n$-level density matrix is given. The parameterization is based on the canonical coset decomposition of unitary matrices. We also compute, explicitly, the Bures metric tensor over the state space of two- and three-level quantum systems.
We analyze the Bures metric over the canonical thermal states for the Kitaev honeycomb mode. In this way the effects of finite temperature on topological phase transitions can be studied. Different regions in the parameter space of the model can be clearly identified in terms of different temperature scaling behavior of the Bures metric tensor. Furthermore, we show a simple relation between the metric elements and the crossover temperature between the quasi-critical and the quasi-classical regions. These results extend the ones of [29,30] to finite temperatures.
We analyze the Bures metric over the manifold of thermal density matrices for systems featuring a zero temperature quantum phase transition. We show that the quantum critical region can be characterized in terms of the temperature scaling behavior of the metric tensor itself. Furthermore, the analysis of the metric tensor when both temperature and an external field are varied, allows to complement the understanding of the phase diagram including cross-over regions which are not characterized by any singular behavior. These results provide a further extension of the scope of the metric approach…
We compute the Bures distance between two thermal squeezed states and deduce the Statistical Distance metric. By computing the curvature of this metric we can identify regions of parameter space most sensitive to changes in these parameters and thus lead to optimum detection statistics.
Hubner's formula for the Bures (statistical distance) metric is applied to both a one-parameter and a two-parameter series (n=2,...,7) of sets of 2^n x 2^n density matrices. In the doubly-parameterized series, the sets are comprised of the n-fold tensor products --- corresponding to n independent, identical quantum systems --- of the 2 x 2 density matrices with real entries. The Gaussian curvatures of the corresponding Bures metrics are found to be constants (4/n). In the second series of 2^n x 2^n density matrices studied, the singly-parameterized sets are formed --- following a study of Krat…
In a number of previous studies, we have investigated the use of the volume element of the Bures (minimal monotone) metric -- identically, one-fourth of the statistical distinguishability (SD) metric -- as a natural measure over the (n^2-1)-dimensional convex set of n x n density matrices. This has led us for the cases n = 4 and 6 to estimates of the prior (Bures/SD) probabilities that qubit-qubit and qubit-qutrit pairs are separable. Here, we extend this work from such bipartite systems to the tripartite "laboratory'' quantum systems possessing U x U x U symmetry recently constructed by Eggel…
The Bures geometry of quantum statistical thermodynamics at thermal equilibrium is investigated by introducing the connections between the Bures angle and the Renyi $1/2$-divergence. Fundamental relations concerning free energy, moments of work and distance are established.
We study the interrelationships between the Fisher information metric recently introduced, on the basis of maximum entropy considerations, by Brody and Hughston (quant-ph/9906085) and the monotone metrics, as explicated by Petz and Sudar. This new metric turns out to be not strictly monotone in nature, and to yield (via its normalized volume element) a prior probability distribution over the Bloch ball of two-level quantum systems that is less noninformative than those obtained from any of the monotone metrics, even the minimal monotone (Bures) metric. We best approximate the additional inform…
The aim of this paper is to derive explicit formulae for the Riemannian Bures metric on the manifold of (finite dimensional) nondegenerate density matrices. The computation of the Bures metric using the presented equations does not require any diagonalization procedure and uses matrix products, determinants and traces, only.
We show that two quantities in quantum metrology that were thought to be the same, the quantum Fisher information matrix and the Bures metric, are not the same. They differ at points at which the rank of the density matrix changes. The quantum Fisher information matrix is discontinuous at these points. However, these discontinuities are removable in some sense. We show that the expression given by the Bures metric represents the continuous version of the quantum Fisher information matrix. We also derive an explicit formula for the Bures metric for both singular and non-singular density matrice…
This article contains a survey of the geometric approach to quantum correlations. We focus mainly on the geometric measures of quantum correlations based on the Bures and quantum Hellinger distances.
It is shown that the connection form (gauge field) related to the generalization of the Berry phase to mixed states proposed by Uhlmann satisfies the source-free Yang-Mills equation *D*Dw=0, where the Hodge star is taken with respect to the Bures metric on the space of finite dimensional nondegenerate density matrices.
We use the canonical coset parameterization and provide a formula with the unitary part of the Bures measure for non-degenerate systems in terms of the product of even Euclidean balls. This formula is shown to be consistent with the sampling of random states through the generation of random unitary matrices.
For certain infinite and finite-dimensional thermal systems, we obtain --- incorporating quantum-theoretic considerations into Bayesian thermostatistical investigations of Lavenda --- high-temperature expansions of priors over inverse temperature beta induced by volume elements ("quantum Jeffreys' priors) of Bures metrics. Similarly to Lavenda's results based on volume elements (Jeffreys' priors) of (classical) Fisher information metrics, we find that in the limit beta -> 0, the quantum-theoretic priors either conform to Jeffreys' rule for variables over [0,infinity], by being proportional to …
We compute the volume of the N^2-1 dimensional set M_N of density matrices of size N with respect to the Bures measure and show that it is equal to that of a N^2-1 dimensional hyper-halfsphere of radius 1/2. For N=2 we obtain the volume of the Uhlmann 3-D hemisphere, embedded in R^4. We find also the area of the boundary of the set M_N and obtain analogous results for the smaller set of all real density matrices. An explicit formula for the Bures-Hall normalization constants is derived for an arbitrary N.
We find, in an analysis involving four prior probabilities (p's), that the information-theoretic-based comparative noninformativity test devised by Clarke, and applied by Slater in a quantum setting, yields a ranking (p_{F_{q=1}} > p_{B} > p_{B_{q=1}trunc} >p_{F}) fully consistent with Srednicki's recently-stated criterion for priors of ``biasedness to pure states''. Two of the priors are formed by extending certain metrics of quantum-theoretic interest from three- to four-dimensions -- by incorporating the q-parameter (nonextensivity/Tsallis index/escort parameter). The three-dimensional metr…
In this paper, we investigate the unified bound of quantum speed limit time in open systems based on the modified Bures angle. This bound is applied to the damped Jaynes-Cummings model and the dephasing model, and the analytical quantum speed limit time is obtained for both models. As an example, the maximum coherent qubit state with white noise is chosen as the initial states for the damped Jaynes-Cummings model. It is found that the quantum speed limit time in both the non-Markovian and the Markovian regimes can be decreased by the white noise compared with the pure state. In addition, for t…
We define a new measure of quantum correlations in bipartite quantum systems given by the Bures distance of the system state to the set of classical states with respect to one subsystem, that is, to the states with zero quantum discord. Our measure is a geometrical version of the quantum discord. As the latter it quantifies the degree of non-classicality in the system. For pure states it is identical to the geometric measure of entanglement. We show that for mixed states it coincides with the optimal success probability of an ambiguous quantum state discrimination task. Moreover, the closest z…
Extensive numerical integration results lead us to conjecture that the silver mean, that is, s = \sqrt{2}-1 = .414214 plays a fundamental role in certain geometries (those given by monotone metrics) imposable on the 15-dimensional convex set of two-qubit systems. For example, we hypothesize that the volume of separable two-qubit states, as measured in terms of (four times) the minimal monotone or Bures metric is s/3, and 10s in terms of (four times) the Kubo-Mori monotone metric. Also, we conjecture, in terms of (four times) the Bures metric, that that part of the 14-dimensional boundary of se…
The Riemannian Bures metric on the space of (normalized) complex positive matrices is used for parameter estimation of mixed quantum states based on repeated measurements just as the Fisher information in classical statistics. It appears also in the concept of purifications of mixed states in quantum physics. Here we determine its scalar curvature and Ricci tensor and prove a lower bound for the curvature on the submanifold of trace one matrices. This bound is achieved for the maximally mixed state, a further hint for the quantum statistical meaning of the scalar curvature.
The unitarity of quantum evolutions implies that the overlap between two initial states does not change in time. This property is commonly believed to explain the lack of state sensitivity in quantum theory, a feature that is prevailing in classical chaotic systems. However, a distance between two points in classical phase space is a completely different mathematical concept than an overlap distance between two points in Hilbert space. There is a possibility that state sensitivity in quantum theory can be uncovered with a help of some other metric. Here we show that the recently introduced Wei…
We show that nonorthogonal states achieve a higher level of entanglement when one party undergoes uniform acceleration. We also show that in this regime non-orthogonal states achieve a higher fidelity for teleportation. A quantum field as observed by an observer confined to a Rindler wedge acts as an open system. When one traces over the field modes in the causally disconnected region of space time, one finds that, for a qubit derived from the modes of a scalar field, the effective state space of a qubit is deformed. In order to show this we numerically calculate the Bures angle between states…
In a unital C*-algebra with a faithful trace functional $τ$, the set $D_τ(A)$ of positive $ρ\in A$ of trace τ(ρ)=1 is an algebraic analogue of the space of density matrices (the set of all positive matrices of a fixed dimension of unit trace). Motivated by the literature concerning the metric properties of the space of density matrices, the present paper studies the density space $D_τ(A)$ in terms of the Bures metric. Linear maps on A that map $D_τ(A)$ back into itself are positive and trace preserving, hence, they may be viewed as an algebraic analogue of a quantum channel, which are studied …
A general procedure is established to calculate the quantum phase diagrams for finite matter-field Hamiltonian models. The minimum energy surface associated to the different symmetries of the model is calculated as a function of the matter-field coupling strengths. By means of the ground state wave functions, one looks for minimal fidelity or maximal Bures distance surfaces in terms of the parameters, and from them the critical regions of those surfaces characterize the finite quantum phase transitions. Following this procedure for $N_a=1$ and $N_a=4$ particles, the quantum phase diagrams are …
We pursue a number of analytical directions, motivated to some extent initially by the possibility of developing a methodology for formally proving or disproving a certain conjecture of quantum-theoretical relevance (quant-ph/0308037). It asserts that the 15-dimensional volume occupied by the separable two-qubit density matrices is (\sqrt{2}-1)/3, as measured in terms of the statistical distinguishability metric (four times the Bures or minimal monotone metric). Somewhat disappointingly, however, the several various analyses that we report, though we hope of independent/autonomous interest, ap…

The minimal Bures distance of a quantum state of a bipartite system AB to the set of classical states for subsystem A defines a geometric measure of quantum discord. When A is a qubit, we show that this geometric quantum discord is given in terms of the eigenvalues of a (2 n_B) x (2 n_B) hermitian matrix, n_B being the Hilbert space dimension of the other subsystem B. As a first application, we calculate the geometric discord for the output state of the DQC1 algorithm. We find that it takes its highest value when the unitary matrix from which the algorithm computes the trace has its eigenvalue…
Two-qubit X-state is a large class of quantum states which plays an important role in the quantification and dynamical study of quantum correlations. However, the corresponding quantification of quantum discord is still missing for bona fide discord measures, like original quantum discord, Bures distance of discord, and relative entropy of discord. In this paper, we consider the calculation of Bures distance of discord, which is a kind of correlation satisfying all criteria of a discord measure, for two-qubit X-states. Firstly, we derive an explicit expression for Bures distance of discord for…
We compute, using a formula of Dittmann, the Bures metric tensor (g) for the eight-dimensional convex set of three-level quantum systems, employing a newly-developed Euler angle-based parameterization of the 3 x 3 density matrices. Most of the individual metric elements (g_{ij}) are found to be expressible in relatively compact form, many of them in fact being exactly zero.
A new quantum divergence induced from the $α-z$ Renyi relative entropy, called the $α-z$ Bures-Wasserstein quantum divergence, has been recently introduced. We investigate in this paper properties of the right mean, which is a unique minimizer of the weighted sum of $α-z$ Bures-Wasserstein quantum divergences to each points. Many interesting operator inequalities of the right mean with the matrix power mean including the Cartan mean are presented. Moreover, we verify the trace inequality with the Wasserstein mean and provide bounds for the Hadamard product of two right means.
For the eight-dimensional Riemannian manifold comprised by the three-level quantum systems endowed with the Bures metric, we numerically approximate the integrals over the manifold of several functions of the curvature and of its (anti-)self-dual parts. The motivation for pursuing this research is to elaborate upon the findings of Dittmann in his paper, "Yang-Mills equation and Bures metric" (quant-ph/9806018).
Quantum channel discrimination is a fundamental problem in quantum information science. In this study, we consider general quantum channel discrimination problems, and derive the lower bounds of the error probability. Our lower bounds are based on the triangle inequalities of the Bures angle and the trace distance. As a consequence of the lower bound based on the Bures angle, we prove the optimality of Grover's search if the number of marked elements is fixed to some integer $\ell$. This result generalizes Zalka's result for $\ell=1$. We also present several numerical results in which our lowe…
The notion of distance defined on the set of states of a composite quantum system can be used to quantify total, quantum and classical correlations in a unifying way. We provide new closed formulae for classical and total correlations of two-qubit Bell-diagonal states by considering the Bures distance. Complementing the known corresponding expressions for entanglement and more general quantum correlations, we thus complete the quantitative hierarchy of Bures correlations for Bell-diagonal states. We then explicitly calculate Bures correlations for two relevant families of states: Werner states…
Fidelity plays a key role in quantum information and communication theory. Fidelity can be interpreted as the probability that a decoded message possesses the same information content as the message prior to coding and transmission. In this paper, we give a formula of Bures fidelity for displaced squeezed thermal states directly by the displacement and squeezing parameters and birefly discuss how the results can apply to quantum information theory.
We present a new method of deriving the geometry of entanglement wedges in holography directly from conformal field theories (CFTs). We analyze an information metric called the Bures metric of reduced density matrices for locally excited states. This measures distinguishability of states with different points excited. For a subsystem given by an interval, we precisely reproduce the expected entanglement wedge for two dimensional holographic CFTs from the Bures metric, which turns out to be proportional to the AdS metric on a time slice. On the other hand, for free scalar CFTs, we do not find a…
We propose a framework to characterize entanglement with quantum discord, both asymmetric and symmetric, over state extensions. In particular, we show that the minimal Bures distance of discord over state extensions is equivalent to Bures distance of entanglement. This equivalence places quantum discord at a more primitive position than entanglement conceptually in the sense that entanglement can be interpreted as an irreducible part of discord over all state extensions. Based on this equivalence, we also offer an operational meaning of Bures distance of entanglement by connecting it to quantu…
We conduct a study based on the Bures (minimal monotone) metric, analogous to that recently reported for the Hilbert-Schmidt (flat or Euclidean) metric (arXiv:0704.3723v2). Among the interesting results obtained there had been proportionalities--in exact correspondence to the Dyson indices β= 1, 2, 4 of random matrix theory--between the fourth, second and first powers of the separability functions S_{type}(μ) for real, complex and quaternionic qubit-qubit scenarios, Here μ=\sqrt{\frac{ρ_{11} ρ_{44}}{ρ_{22} ρ_{33}}}, with ρbeing a 4 x 4 density matrix. Separability functions have proved useful-…
We reexamine a recent analysis in which, using the volume of the associated quantum steering ellipsoid (QES) as a measure, we sought to estimate the probability that a two-qubit state is separable. In the estimation process, we, in effect, sought to attach to states random with respect to Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) measure, the corresponding QES volumes. However, a study of the relations between HS and Bures ensembles and their well-supported separability probabilities of $\frac{8}{33}$ and $\frac{25}{341}$, respectively, now lead us to explore as a possible alternative measure, the QES volume divid…
We obtain two sided estimates for the Bures volume of an arbitrary subset of the set of $N\times N$ density matrices, in terms of the Hilbert-Schmidt volume of that subset. For general subsets, our results are essentially optimal (for large $N$). As applications, we derive in particular nontrivial lower and upper bounds for the Bures volume of sets of separable states and for sets of states with positive partial transpose. In the report we analyze the indicator/measure of classicality of quantum states defined as the probability to find a state with a positive Wigner function within a unitary invariant random ensemble. The indicators of classicality of three ensembles associated with the Hilbert-Schmidt, Bures and Bogoliubov-Kubo-Mori metrics on the space of quantum states of 3-level system are computed. Their dependence on a moduli parameter of the Wigner function is studied for all strata of a qutrit state space stratified in accordance with the unitary group action.
Utilizing a number of results of Dittmann, we investigate the nature of the Yang-Mills field over the eight-dimensional convex set, endowed with the Bures metric, of three-level quantum systems. Parallelling the decomposition of eight-dimensional Euclidean fields by Corrigan, Devchand, Fairlie and Nuyts, as well as Figueoroa-O'Farrill and others, we investigate the properties of self-dual and anti-self-dual four-forms corresponding specifically to our Bures/non-Euclidean context. For any of a number of (nondegenerate) 3 x 3 density matrices, we are able to solve the eigenequation of the associ…
Fidelity plays an important role in quantum information theory. In this letter, we introduce new metric of quantum states induced by fidelity, and connect it with the well-known trace metric, Sine metric and Bures metric for the qubit case. The metric character is also presented for the qudit (i.e., $d$-dimensional system) case. The CPT contractive property and joint convex property of the metric are also studied.
The presence of quantum correlations in a quantum state is related to the state response to local unitary perturbations. Such response is quantified by the distance between the unperturbed and perturbed states, minimized with respect to suitably identified sets of local unitary operations. In order to be a bona fide measure of quantum correlations, the distance function must be chosen among those that are contractive under completely positive and trace preserving maps. The most relevant instances of such physically well behaved metrics include the trace, the Bures, and the Hellinger distance. …
In previous studies, we have explored the ansatz that the volume elements of the Bures metrics over quantum systems might serve as prior distributions, in analogy to the (classical) Bayesian role of the volume elements ("Jeffreys' priors") of Fisher information metrics. Continuing this work, we obtain exact Bures probabilities that the members of certain low-dimensional subsets of the fifteen-dimensional convex set of 4 x 4 density matrices are separable or classically correlated. The main analytical tools employed are symbolic integration and a formula of Dittmann (quant-ph/9908044) for Bures…
We investigate the possibility of deriving analytical formulas for the 15-dimensional separable volumes, in terms of any of a number of metrics of interest (Hilbert-Schmidt [HS], Bures,...), of the two-qubit (four-level) systems. This would appear to require 15-fold symbolic integrations over a complicated convex body (defined by both separability and feasibility constraints). The associated 15-dimensional integrands -- in terms of the Tilma-Byrd-Sudarshan Euler-angle-based parameterization of the 4 x 4 density matrices ρ(math-ph/0202002) -- would be the products of 12-dimensional Haar measure…
Fidelity is a fundamental and ubiquitous concept in quantum information theory. Fuchs-van de Graaf's inequalities deal with bounding fidelity from above and below. In this paper, we give a lower bound on the quantum fidelity between two states in terms of their Bures distance.
This is a review of the ideas behind the Fisher--Rao metric on classical probability distributions, and how they generalize to metrics on density matrices. As is well known, the unique Fisher--Rao metric then becomes a large family of monotone metrics. Finally I focus on the Bures--Uhlmann metric, and discuss a recent result that connects the geometric operator mean to a geodesic billiard on the set of density matrices.
The problem of estimating multiple loss parameters of an optical system using the most general ancilla-assisted parallel strategy is solved under energy constraints. An upper bound on the quantum Fisher information matrix is derived assuming that the environment modes involved in the loss interaction can be accessed. Any pure-state probe that is number-diagonal in the modes interacting with the loss elements is shown to exactly achieve this upper bound even if the environment modes are inaccessible, as is usually the case in practice. We explain this surprising phenomenon, and show that measur…
Ensembles of random density matrices determined by various probability measures are analysed. A simple and efficient algorithm to generate at random density matrices distributed according to the Bures measure is proposed. This procedure may serve as an initial step in performing Bayesian approach to quantum state estimation based on the Bures prior. We study the distribution of purity of random mixed states. The moments of the distribution of purity are determined for quantum states generated with respect to the Bures measure. This calculation serves as an exemplary application of the "deform-…
