Let $K/F$ be a quadratic extension of $p$-adic fields, $σ$ the nontrivial element of the Galois group of $K$ over $F$, and $π$ a quasi-square-integrable representation of $GL(n,K)$. Denoting by $π^{\vee}$ the smooth contragredient of $π$, and by $π^σ$ the representation $π\circ σ$, we show that the representation of $GL(2n, K)$ obtained by normalized parabolic induction of the representation $π^\vee \otimes π^σ$ is distinguished with respect to $GL(2n,F)$. This is a step towards the classification of distinguished generic representations of general linear groups over $p$-adic fields.
We prove a conjecture of Prasad and Takloo-Bighash for discrete series of inner forms of the general linear group over a non archimedean local field, in the case of Steinberg representations.
This article has a twofold purpose. First, by recent works of Kaletha and Loke-Ma, we give an explicit description of the local theta correspondence between regular supercuspidal representations in the equal rank symplectic-orthogonal case. Second, based on this description, we show that the local theta correspondence preserves distinction with respect to unramified Galois involutions.

Let K/F be a tamely ramified quadratic extension of non-archimedean locally compact fields. Let GL_m (D) be an inner form of GL_n (F) and GLp(R) = (M_m (D) \otimes K)^{\times} . Then GLp(R) is an inner form of GL_n (K). In this work, we determine conditions of GL_m (D)-distinction for level zero cuspidal representations of GL_p (R) which are the image of a level zero cuspidal representation by the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence, and we also prove that a level zero cuspidal representation of GL_n (K) is GL_n (F) distinguished if and only if its image by the Jacquet-Langlands correspondance is…
Let $K/F$ be a quadratic extension of $p$-adic fields, and $n$ a positive integer. A smooth irreducible representation of the group $GL(n,K)$ is said to be distinguished, if it admits on its space a nonzero $GL(n,F)$-invariant linear form. In the present work, we classify genric distinguished representations of the group $GL(n,K)$ in terms of inducing quasi-square-integrable representations. This has as a consequence the truth of the expected equality between the Rankin-Selberg type Asai $L$-function of a generic representation, and the Asai $L$-function of its Langlands parameter.
Let $K/F$ be a quadratic extension of p-adic fields. The Bernstein-Zelevinsky's classification asserts that generic representations are parabolically induced from quasi-square-integrable representations. We show, following a method developed by Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro, that the equality of the Rankin-Selberg type Asai $L$-function of generic representations of $GL(n,K)$ and of the Asai $L$-function of the Langlands parameter, is equivalent to the truth of a conjecture about classification of distinguished generic representations in terms of the inducing quasi-square-integrable representa…
Let $F$ be a non archimedean local field of characteristic not $2$. Let $D$ be a division algebra of dimension $d^2$ over its center $F$, and $E$ a quadratic extension of $F$. If $m$ is a positive integer, to a character $χ$ of $E^*$, one can attach the Steinberg representation $St(χ)$ of $G=GL(m,D\otimes_F E)$. Let $H$ be the group $GL(m,D)$, we prove that $St(χ)$ is $H$-distinguished if and only if $χ_{|F^*}$ is the quadratic character $η_{E/F}^{md-1}$, where $η_{E/F}$ is the character of $F^*$ with kernel the norms of $E^*$. We also get multiplicity one for the space of invariant linear for…
Let $F$ be a nonarchimedean local field, let $E$ be a Galois quadratic extension of $F$ and let $G$ be a quasisplit group defined over $F$; a conjecture by Dipendra Prasad states that the Steinberg representation of $G(E)$ is then $χ$-distinguished for a given unique character $χ$ of $G(F)$. In the first two papers of the series, Broussous and the author have proved that result when $G$ is $F$-split and $E/F$ is unramified; this paper deals with the tamely ramified case, still with $G$ $F$-split.
We prove Dipendra Prasad's conjecture on the distinction of the Steinberg representation for symmetric spaces of the form G(E)/G(F), where G is a split reductive group defined over F and E/F an unramified quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields.
We consider distinction of representations in the context of $p$-adic Galois symmetric spaces. We provide new sufficient conditions for distinction of parabolically induced representations in terms of similar conditions on the inducing data and deduce a characterization for distinction of representations parabolically induced from cuspidal. We explicate the results further for classical groups and give several applications, in particular, concerning the preservation of distinction via Langlands functoriality. We relate our results with a conjecture of Dipendra Prasad.
We give a new proof of the existence of Klyachko models for unitary representations of ${\rm GL}_{n}(F)$ over a non-archimedean local field $F$. Our methods are purely local and are based on studying distinction within the class of ladder representations introduced by Lapid and Minguez. We classify those ladder representations that are distinguished with respect to Klyachko models. We prove the hereditary property of these models for induced representations from arbitrary finite length representations. Finally, in the other direction and in the context of admissible representations induced fro…
Let K/F be a quadratic extension of non archimedean local fields. Let V be an irreducible level zero discrete series representation of the group G = GL2(R), where R is a division algebra of center K and of index r. One assumes that V is not a supercuspidal representation. Let D be a division algebra of center F and index 2r. In the following work, we try to answer this question : Is the representation V D^{*}-distinguished if and only if its image by the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence is GL2(F)-distinguished. To answer this question, we use the coefficients system on the Bruhat-Tits building…
We study a relation between distinction and special values of local invariants for representations of the general linear group over a quadratic extension of $p$-adic fields. We show that the local Rankin-Selberg root number of any pair of distinguished representation is trivial and as a corollary we obtain an analogue for the global root number of any pair of distinguished cuspidal representations. We further study the extent to which the gamma factor at $1/2$ is trivial for distinguished representations as well as the converse problem.
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field and $\mathbf{U}$ be a unipotent group defined over $F$, and set $U=\mathbf{U}(F)$. Let $σ$ be an involution of $\mathbf{U}$ defined over $F$. Adapting the arguments of Yves Benoist in the real case, we prove the following result: an irreducible representation $π$ of $U$ is $U^σ$-distinguished if and only if it is $σ$-self-dual and in this case $\mathrm{Hom}_{U^σ}(π,\mathbb{C})$ has dimension one. When $σ$ is a Galois involution these results imply a bijective correspondence between the set $\mathrm{Irr}(U^σ)$ of isomorphism classes of irreducible representations of …
We study ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(F)$-distinction for representations of the quasi-split unitary group $U_{2n}(E/F)$ in $2n$ variables with respect to a quadratic extension $E/F$ of $p$-adic fields. A conjecture of Dijols and Prasad predicts that no tempered representation is distinguished. We verify this for a large family of representations in terms of the Moeglin-Tadic classification of the discrete series. We further study distinction for some families of non-tempered representations. In particular, we exhibit $L$-packets with no distinguished members that transfer under stable base change to ${\rm …
In this article, we study Prasad's conjecture for regular supercuspidal representations based on the machinery developed by Hakim and Murnaghan to study distinguished representations, and the fundamental work of Kaletha on parameterization of regular supercuspidal representations. For regular supercuspidal representations, we give some new interpretations of the numerical quantities appearing in Prasad's formula, and reduce the proof to the case of tori. The proof of Prasad's conjecture then reduces to a comparison of various quadratic characters appearing naturally in the above process. We al…
Behind this sophisticated title hides an elementary exercise on Clifford theory for index two subgroups and self-dual/conjugate-dual representations. When applied to semi-simple representations of the Weil-Deligne group $W'_F$ of a non Archimedean local field $F$, and further translated in terms of representations of $\mathrm{GL_n}(F)$ via the local Langlands correspondence when $F$ has characteristic zero, it yields various statements concerning the behaviour of different types of distinction under quadratic base change and automorphic induction. When $F$ has residual characteristic different…
Let E/F be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields of characteristic 0. In this paper, we investigate two approaches which attempt to describe the smooth irreducible representations of GL(n,E) that are distinguished by its subgroup GL(n,F). One relates this class to representations which come as base change lifts from a quasi-split unitary group F, while another deals with a certain symmetry condition. By characterizing the union of images of the base change maps we show that these two approaches are closely related. Using this observation, we are able to prove a statement relati…
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of number fields and let $π$ be an $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{A}_F)$-distinguished cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{A}_E)$. Using an unfolding argument, we prove that an element of the $\mathrm{L}$-packet of $π$ is distinguished if and only if it is $ψ$-generic for a non-degenerate character $ψ$ of $N_n(\mathbb{A}_E)$ trivial on $N_n(E+\mathbb{A}_F)$, where $N_n$ is the group of unipotent upper triangular matrices of $\mathrm{SL}_n$. We then use this result to analyze the non-vanishing of the period integral on different realizations …
In the following article, we give a description of the distingushed irreducible principal series representations of the general linear group over a p-adic field in terms of inducing datum. This provides a counter-example to a conjecture of Jacquet about distinction (Conjecture 1 in U.K Anandavardhanan, "Distinguished non-Archimedean representations ", Proc. Hyderabad Conference on Algebra and Number Theory, 2005, 183-192).
Based on recent work of Kaletha, we apply Hakim--Murnaghan's result to study distinguished regular supercuspidal representations of tamely ramified reductive $p$-adic groups. Assuming $p$ is sufficiently large, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for regular supercuspidal representations to be distinguished. We also investigate the relation between the distinction problem and the Langlands functoriality, and confirm a conjecture of Lapid for regular depth-zero or epipelagic supercuspidal representations.
An irreducible smooth representation of a $p$-adic group $G$ is said to be distinguished with respect to a subgroup $H$ if it admits a non-trivial $H$-invariant linear form. When $H$ is the fixed group of an involution on $G$ it is suggested by the works of Hervé Jacquet from the nineties that distinction can be characterized in terms of the principle of functoriality. If the involution is the Galois involution then a recent conjecture of Dipendra Prasad predicts a formula for the dimension of the space of invariant linear forms which once again involves base change. We will describe the proof…
If $E/F$ is a quadratic extension $p$-adic fields, we first prove that the $\mathrm{SL}_n(F)$-distinguished representations inside a distinguished unitary L-packet of $\mathrm{SL}_n(E)$ are precisely those admitting a degenerate Whittaker model with respect to a degenerate character of $N(E)/N(F)$. Then we establish a global analogue of this result. For this, let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of number fields and let $π$ be an $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{A}_F)$-distinguished square integrable automorphic representation of $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{A}_E)$. Let $(σ,d)$ be the unique pair associated to …
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of p-adic fields. We prove that every smooth irreducible ladder representation of the group $GL_n(E)$ which is contragredient to its own Galois conjugate, possesses the expected distinction properties relative to the subgroup $GL_n(F)$. This affirms a conjecture attributed to Jacquet for a large class of representations. Along the way, we prove a reformulation of the conjecture which concerns standard modules in place of irreducible representations.
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field, $E$ be a quadratic extension of $F$, $D$ be an $F$-central division algebra of odd index and let $θ$ be the Galois involution attached to $E/F$. Set $H=GL(m,D)$, $G=GL(m,D\otimes_F E)$, and let $P=MU$ be a standard parabolic subgroup of $G$. Let $w$ be a Weyl involution stabilizing $M$ and $M^{θ_w}$ be the subgroup of $M$ fixed by the involution $θ_w:m\mapsto θ(wmw)$. We denote by $X(M)^{w,-}$ the complex torus of $w$-anti-invariant unramified characters of $M$. Following the global methods of Jacquet, Lapid and Rogawski, we associate to a finite length representat…
We prove a geometric version of a classical result on the characterization of an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A}_E)$ being the base change of a stable cuspidal packet of the quasi-split unitary group associated to the quadratic extension $E/F$, via the nonvanishing of certain period integrals, called being distinguished. We show that certain cohomology of an automorphic sheaf of $\mathrm{GL}_{n,X'}$ is nonvanishing if and only if the corresponding local system $E$ on $X'$ is conjugate self-dual with respect to an étale double cover $X'/X$ of curves,…

Let $G_n$ denote either the group $Sp(2n, F)$ or $SO(2n+1, F)$ over a non-archimedean local field $F$. We determine the composition series of representations of $G_n$ induced from cuspidal and ladder representations such that the minimal exponent in the cuspidal support of the ladder representation is greater than or equal to $\frac{1}{2}$.
We have determined composition series of a class of induced representations appearing in Moeglin Tadić classification of discrete series. The result is further used to determine composition series of certain representations induced from Langlands quotients. This should provide more information on decomposing standard representations as well as Jacquet modules of discrete series, which has application in automorphic forms.
We give a new (inductive) proof of the classical Frobenius--Young correspondence between irreducible complex representations of the symmetric group and Young diagrams, using the new approach, suggested in \cite{OV, VO}, to determining this correspondence. We also give linear relations between Kostka numbers that follow from the decomposition of the restrictions of induced representations to the previous symmetric subgroup. We consider a realization of representations induced from Young subgroups in polylinear forms and describe its relation to Specht modules.
We obtain a decomposition formula of a representation of Sp(p,q) and SO^\ast(2n) unitarily induced from a derived functor module, which enables us to reduce the problem of irreducible decompositions to the study of derived functor modules. In particular, we show such an induced representation is decomposed into a direct sum of irreducible unitarily induced modules from derived functor modules under some regularity condition on the parameters. In particular, representations of SO^\ast(2n) and Sp(p,q) induced from one-dimensional unitary representations of their parabolic subgroups are irreducib…
In this paper, we consider representations of $p$-adic classical groups parabolically induced from the products of shifted Speh representations and unitary representations of Arthur type of good parity. We describe how to compute the socles (the maximal semisimple subrepresentations) of these representations. As a consequence, we can determine whether these representations are reducible or not. In particular, our results produce many unitary representations, which are called complementary series.
Hopf representation is a module and comodule with a consistency condition that is more general than the consistency condition of Hopf modules. For a Hopf algebra $H$, we construct an induced Hopf representation from a representation of a bialgebra $B$ using a bialgebra epimorphism $π: H\rightarrow B$. Application on the quantum group $E_{q}(2)$ is given.
Let $G$ be a finite group, $H$ be a normal subgroup of prime index $p$. Let $F$ be a field of either characteristic $0$ or prime to $|G|$. Let $η$ be an irreducible $F$-representation of $H$. If $F$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic either $0$ or prime to $|G|$, then the induced representation $η\uparrow^{G}_{H}$ is either irreducible or a direct sum of $p$ pairwise inequivalent irreducible representations. In this paper, we show that if $F$ is not assumed algebraically closed field, then there are five possibilities in the decomposition of induced representation into irreduci…
In the present paper we continue the project of systematic construction of invariant differential operators on the example of representations of the conformal algebra induced from the maximal cuspidal parabolic.
A holomorphic continuation of Jacquet type integrals for parabolic subgroups with abelian nilradical is studied. Complete results are given for generic characters with compact stabilizer and arbitrary representations induced from admissible representations. A description of all of the pertinent examples is given. These results give a complete description of the Bessel models corresponding to compact stabilizer.
We consider the residues at the poles in the right half plane of Eisenstein series, on symplectic groups, or their double covers, induced from Speh representations. We show that for each such pole, there is a unique maximal nilpotent orbit, attached to Fourier coefficients admitted by the corresponding residual representation. We find this orbit in each case.
We study the representation theory of graded Hecke algebras, starting from scratch and focusing on representations that are obtained with induction from a discrete series representation of a parabolic subalgebra. We determine all intertwining operators between such parabolically induced representations, and use them to parametrize the irreducible representations.
We provide some experimental results on the decomposition of the parabolic induction of $π\otimesπ$ in the Grothendieck group where $π$ is an irreducible representation of $GL_n$ over a local non-archimedean field.
Let A be a finite dimensional central division algebra over a local non-archimedean field F. Fix any parabolic subgroup P of GL(n,A) and a Levi factor M of P. Let πbe an irreducible unitary representation of M and ϕ(not necessarily unitary) character of M. We give an explicit necessary and sufficient condition for the parabolically induced representation Ind(ϕπ) of GL(n,A) to be irreducible.
This is Part IV of a thematic series currently consisting of a monograph and four essays. This essay examines the form of induced representations of locally p-adic Lie groups G which is appropriate for the abelian category of ${\mathcal M}_{c}(G)$-admissible representations. In my non-expert manner, I prove the analogue of Jacquet's Theorem in this category. The final section consists of observations and questions related to this and other concepts introduced in the course of this series.
We compute the ring of non-induced representations for a cyclic group, $C_n$, over an arbitrary field and show that it has rank $φ(n)$, where $φ$ is Euler's totient function - independent of the characteristic of the field. Along the way, we obtain a "pick-a-number" trick; expressing an integer $n$ as a sum of products of $p$-adic digits of related integers.
Selfdual representations of any group fall into two classes when they are irreducible: those which carry a symmetric bilinear form, and the others which carry an alternating bilinear form. The Langlands correspondence, which matches the irreducible representations σof the Weil group of a local field k of dimension n with the irreducible representations πof the invertible elements of a division algebra D over k of index n, takes selfdual representations to selfdual representations. In this paper we use global methods to study how the Langlands correspondence behaves relative to this distinction…
Let $E/F$ be a quadratic extension of non archimedean local fields of odd residual characteristic. We prove a conjecture of Prasad and Takloo-Bighash, in the case of cuspidal representations of depth zero of $\mathrm{GL}(2m,F)$. This conjecture characterizes distinction for the pair $(\mathrm{GL}(2m,F),\mathrm{GL}(m,E))$ with respect to a character $μ\circ \mathrm{det}$ of $\mathrm{GL}(m,E)$, in terms of certain conditions on Langlands paremeters, including an epsilon value. We also compute the multiplicity of the involved equivariant linear forms when $E/F$ is unramified, and also when $μ$ is…
We review various notions of correspondences for locally compact groupoids with Haar systems, in particular a recent definition due to R.D. Holkar. We give the construction of the representations induced by such a correspondence. Finally, we extend the construction of induced representations to hypergroupoids.
We show that the class of inductive limits of the representations of finite symmetric groups with simple spectrum coinsides with the class of Markov representations of the infinite symmetric group associated with Markov measures on the space of infinite Young tableaux. We also show that the representations of infinite symmetric group induced from identity representation of two-block Young subgroup are Markov representations and find explicit formulas for transition probabilities of corresponding Markov measure on the Young diagrmas. Induced two-row representations of finite symmetric group are…
The induced representation ${\rm Ind}_H^GS$ of a locally compact group $G$ is the unitary representation of the group $G$ associated with unitary representation $S:H\rightarrow U(V)$ of a subgroup $H$ of the group $G$. Our aim is to develop the concept of induced representations for infinite-dimensional groups. The induced representations for infinite-dimensional groups in not unique, as in the case of a locally compact groups. It depends on two completions $\tilde H$ and $\tilde G$ of the subgroup $H$ and the group $G$, on an extension $\tilde S:\tilde H\rightarrow U(V)$ of the representation…
Recently Delorme and Opdam have generalized the theory of R-groups towards affine Hecke algebras with unequal labels. We apply their results in the case where the affine Hecke algebra is of type B, for an induced discrete series representation with real central character. We calculate the R-group of such an induced representation, and show that it decomposes multiplicity free into 2^d irreducible summands. The power d can be calculated combinatorially.
By employing a new strategy we prove that all parabolically induced unitary representations of the Burger-Mozes universal group U(F)^+, with F being primitive, have all their matrix coefficients vanishing at infinity. This generalizes the same well-known result for the universal group U(F)^+, when F is 2-transitive.
