Coulomb gauge quantum chromodynamics within the first order functional formalism is considered. The quark contributions to the Dyson-Schwinger equations are derived and one-loop perturbative results for the two-point functions are presented.
The Yang-Mills Schrödinger equation is variationally solved in Coulomb gauge for the vacuum sector using a trial wave functional, which is strongly peaked at the Gribov horizon. We find the absence of gluons in the infrared and also a confining quark potential.
We study the static gluon and quark propagator of the Hamiltonian approach to Quantum Chromodynamics in Coulomb gauge in one-loop Rayleigh--Schrödinger perturbation theory. We show that the results agree with the equal-time limit of the four-dimensional propagators evaluated in the functional integral (Lagrangian) approach.
We investigate the equal-time (static) quark propagator in Coulomb gauge within the Hamiltonian approach to QCD. We use a non-Gaussian vacuum wave functional which includes the coupling of the quarks to the spatial gluons. The expectation value of the QCD Hamiltonian is expressed by the variational kernels of the vacuum wave functional by using the canonical recursive Dyson--Schwinger equations (CRDSEs) derived previously. Assuming the Gribov formula for the gluon energy we solve the CRDSE for the quark propagator in the bare-vertex approximation together with the variational equations of the …
We consider the heavy quark limit of Coulomb gauge QCD, with the truncation of the Yang-Mills sector to include only (dressed) two-point functions. We find that the rainbow-ladder approximation to the gap and Bethe-Salpeter equations is nonperturbatively exact and moreover, we provide a direct connection between the temporal gluon propagator and the quark confinement potential. Further, we show that only bound states of color singlet quark-antiquark (meson) and quark-quark (SU(2) baryon) pairs are physically allowed.
We study renormalization of Coulomb-gauge QCD within the Lagrangian second-order formalism. We derive a Ward identity and the Zinn-Justin equation, and, with the help of the latter, we give a proof of algebraic renormalizability of the theory. Through diagrammatic analyses, we show that, in the strict Coulomb gauge, g^2D^{00} is invariant under renormalization. (D^{00} is the time-time component of the gluon propagator.)
We investigate the equal-time (static) quark propagator in Coulomb gauge within the Hamiltonian approach to QCD in $d=2$ spatial dimensions. Although the underlying Clifford algebra is very different from its counterpart in $d=3$, the gap equation for the dynamical mass function has the same form. The additional vector kernel which was introduced in $d=3$ to cancel the linear divergence of the gap equation and to preserve multiplicative renormalizability of the quark propagator makes the gap equation free of divergences also in $d=2$.
Force potential exerting between two classical static sources of pure non-abelian gauge theory in the Coulomb gauge is reconsidered at a periodic/twisted box of size $L^3$. Its perturbative behavior is examined by the short-distance expansion as well as by the derivative expansion. The latter expansion to one-loop order confirms the well-known change in the effective coupling constant at the Coulomb part as well as the Uehling potential while the former is given by the convolution of two Coulomb Green functions being non-singular at $\bm{x}=\bm{y}$. The effect of the twist comes in through its…
In Coulomb gauge QCD in the Lagrangian formalism, energy divergences arise in individual diagrams. We give a proof on cancellation of these divergences to all orders of perturbation theory without obstructing the algebraic renormalizability of the theory.
The Slavnov-Taylor identities of Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory are derived from the (standard, second order) functional formalism. It is shown how these identities form closed sets from which one can in principle fully determine the Green's functions involving the temporal component of the gauge field without approximation, given appropriate input.
The Dyson-Schwinger equation for the 4-point quark Green's functions is studied. In the limit of the heavy quark mass and with the truncation to include only the dressed two point functions for the Yang-Mills sector, we provide an exact solution for the 4-point quark Green's functions, in both quark-antiquark and diquark channels, and show that the corresponding poles relate to the bound state energy of the heavy quark systems. Moreover, a natural separation between physical and unphysical poles in the Green's functions emerges.
We give the results for all the one-loop propagators, including finite parts, in the Coulomb gauge. In finite parts we find new non-rational functions in addition to the single logarithms of the Feynman gauge. Of course, the two gauges must agree for any gauge invariant function. We revise the manuscript hep-th/0311118v2 and Eur.Phys.J.C37, 307-313(2004) in accordance with the notation and correct Feynman rules for the Coulomb gauge in Minkowski space found in [16]. The high-energy behaviour of the proper two-point functions is added in Appendix C.
Spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry is investigated in the Hamiltonian approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge. The quark wave functional is determined by the variational principle using an ansatz which goes beyond the commonly used BCS-type of wave functionals and includes the coupling of the quarks to the transversal spatial gluons. Using the lattice gluon propagator as input it is shown that the low energy chiral properties of the quarks, like the quark condensate and the constituent quark mass, are substantially increased by the coupling of the quarks to the spatial gluons. Our results compar…
The infrared behaviour of gluon and ghost propagators, ghost-gluon vertex and three-gluon vertex is investigated for both the covariant Landau and the non-covariant Coulomb gauge. Assuming infrared ghost dominance, we find a unique infrared exponent in the d=4 Landau gauge, while in the d=3+1 Coulomb gauge we find two different infrared exponents. We also show that a finite dressing of the ghost-gluon vertex has no influence on the infrared exponents. Finally, we determine the infrared behaviour of the three-gluon vertex analytically and calculate it numerically at the symmetric point in the C…
The relationship between the nonperturbative Green's functions of Yang-Mills theory and the confinement potential is investigated. By rewriting the generating functional of quantum chromodynamics in terms of a heavy quark mass expansion in Coulomb gauge, restricting to leading order in this expansion and considering only the two-point functions of the Yang-Mills sector, the rainbow-ladder approximation to the gap and Bethe-Salpeter equations is shown to be exact in this case and an analytic, nonperturbative solution is presented. It is found that there is a direct connection between the string…
The heavy quark sector of Coulomb gauge QCD is investigated, by making a heavy quark mass expansion of the QCD action and restricting to the leading order. With the truncation of the Yang-Mills sector to include only dressed two-point functions, we study the Dyson-Schwinger equations for the four-point quark Green's functions (proper and amputated). In this limit, we provide an exact solution for the four-point quark Green's functions and show that the corresponding poles relate to the bound state energy of the heavy quark system. Moreover, a natural separation between the physical and unphysi…
The variational approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is extended to full QCD. For the quark sector we use a trial wave functional, which goes beyond the previously used BCS-type state and which explicitly contains the coupling of the quarks to transverse gluons. This quark wave functional contains two variational kernels: One is related to the quark condensate and occurs already in the BCS-type states. The other represents the form factor of the coupling of the quarks to the transverse gluons. Minimization of the energy density with respect to these kernels results in two coupled int…
We study the static quantum potential for a gauge theory which includes the mixing between the familiar photon $U(1)_{QED}$ and a second massive gauge field living in the so-called hidden-sector $U(1)_h$. Our discussion is carried out using the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism, which is alternative to the Wilson loop approach. Our results show that the static potential is a Yukawa correction to the usual static Coulomb potential. Interestingly, when this calculation is done inside a superconducting box, the Coulombic piece disappears leading to a screening phase.
I will review results obtained recently within the Hamilton approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge. The focus will be on finite-temperature Yang--Mills theory and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.
In the Coulomb gauge of nonabelian gauge theories there are in general, in individual graphs, 'energy-divergences' on integrating over the loop energy variable for fixed loop momentum. These divergences are avoided in the Hamiltonian, phase-space formulation. But, even in this formulation, energy-divergences re-appear at 2-loop order. We show in an example how these cancel between graphs as a consequence of Ward identities.
We discuss the Coulomb propagator in the formalism developed recently in which we construct the Coulomb gauge path-integral by correlating it with the well-defined Lorentz gauge path-integrals through a finite field-dependent BRS transformation. We discover several features of the Coulomb gauge from it. We find that the singular Coulomb gauge HAS to be treated as the gauge parameter lambda --> 0 limit. We further find that the propagator so obtained has good high energy behavior (k_0^{-2}) for lambda and epsilon nonzero. We further find that the behavior of the propagator so obtained is sensit…
The Weyl-gauge ($A_0^a=0)$ QCD Hamiltonian is unitarily transformed to a representation in which it is expressed entirely in terms of gauge-invariant quark and gluon fields. In a subspace of gauge-invariant states we have constructed that implement the non-Abelian Gauss's law, this unitarily transformed Weyl-gauge Hamiltonian can be further transformed and, under appropriate circumstances, can be identified with the QCD Hamiltonian in the Coulomb gauge. We demonstrate an isomorphism that materially facilitates the application of this Hamiltonian to a variety of physical processes, including th…
The Yang-Mills Schrödinger equation is solved in Coulomb gauge for the vacuum by the variational principle using an ansatz for the wave functional, which is strongly peaked at the Gribov horizon. A coupled set of Schwinger-Dyson equations for the gluon and ghost propagators in the Yang-Mills vacuum as well as for the curvature of gauge orbit space is derived and solved in one-loop approximation. We find an infrared suppressed gluon propagator, an infrared singular ghost propagator and a almost linearly rising confinement potential.
The variational approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge developed previously by the Tübingen group is improved by enlarging the space of quark trial vacuum wave functionals through a new Dirac structure in the quark-gluon coupling. Our ansatz for the quark vacuum wave functional ensures that all linear divergences cancel in the quark gap equation resulting from the minimization of the energy calculated to two-loop order. The logarithmic divergences are absorbed in a renormalized coupling which is adjusted to reproduce the phenomenological value of the quark condensate. We also unquench the gluon prop…
Perturbative Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory within the first order formalism is considered. Using a differential equation technique and dimensional regularization, analytic results for both the ultraviolet divergent and finite parts of the two-point functions at one-loop order are derived. It is shown how the non-ultraviolet divergent parts of the results are finite at spacelike momenta with kinematical singularities on the light-cone and subsequent branch cuts extending into the timelike region.
A truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations of quantum chromodynamics in Coulomb gauge within the first order formalism is presented. The truncation is based on an Ansatz for the Coulomb kernel occurring in the action. Results at leading loop order and in the infrared are discussed for both the Yang-Mills and quark sectors. It is found that the resulting equations for the static gluon and quark propagators agree with those derived in a quasi-particle approximation to the canonical Hamiltonian approach. Moreover, a connection to the heavy quark limit is established. The equations are …
The variational approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge is revisited. By assuming the non-Abelian Coulomb potential to be given by the sum of its infrared and ultraviolet parts, i.e.~by a linearly rising potential and an ordinary Coulomb potential, and by using a Slater determinant ansatz for the quark wave functional, which contains the coupling of the quarks and the gluons with two different Dirac structures, we obtain variational equations for the kernels of the fermionic vacuum wave functional, which are free of ultraviolet divergences. Thereby, a Gaussian type wave functional is assumed for the …
We study, to one loop order, the behavior of the gluon self-energy in the non covariant Coulomb gauge at finite temperature. The cancellation of the peculiar energy divergences, which arise in such a gauge, is explicitly verified in the complete two point function of the Yang-Mills theory. At high temperatures, the leading T^2 term is determined to be transverse and nonlocal, in agreement with the results obtained in covariant gauges. The coefficient of the sub-leading ln(T) contribution, is non transverse but local and coincides (up to a multiplicative constant) with that of the ultraviolet p…
It is argued that within the continuum functional formalism, there is no need to supply a further (spatially independent) gauge constraint to complete the Coulomb gauge of Yang-Mills theory. It is shown explicitly that a natural completion of the gauge-fixing leads to a contradiction with the perturbative renormalizability of the theory.
Coulomb gauge QCD in the first order formalism can be written in terms of a ghost-free, nonlocal action that ensures total color charge conservation via Gauss' law. Making an Ansatz whereby the nonlocal term (the Coulomb kernel) is replaced by its expectation value, the resulting Dyson-Schwinger equations can be derived. With a leading order truncation, these equations reduce to the gap equations for the static gluon and quark propagators obtained from a quasi-particle approximation to the canonical Hamiltonian approach. Moreover a connection to the heavy quark limit can be established, allowi…
We present an analytic nonperturbative solution of the Yakubovsky equation for tetraquark states in the case of equal separations and energies, and demonstrate a direct connection between the tetraquark confinement potential and the temporal gluon propagator. To this end we employ a leading-order heavy quark mass expansion of the Coulomb gauge QCD action, and use the dressed two-point functions of the Yang-Mills sector only. As a result we find a bound state energy that rises linear with distance and a string tension twice as large as in a $q\bar{q}$-system.
The functional approach to Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory is considered within the standard, second order, formalism. The Dyson-Schwinger equations and Slavnov-Taylor identities concerning the two-point functions are derived explicitly and one-loop perturbative results are presented.
We review the canonical quantization of continuum Yang-Mills theory, and derive the continuum Coulomb-gauge Hamiltonian by a simplification of the Christ-Lee method. We then analogously derive, by a simple and elementary method, the lattice Coulomb-gauge Hamiltonian in the minimal Coulomb gauge (and in other Coulomb gauges) from the known Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian.
If the color Coulomb potential is confining, then the Coulomb field energy of an isolated color charge is infinite on an infinite lattice, even if the usual UV divergence is lattice regulated. A simple criterion for Coulomb confinement is that the expectation value of timelike link variables vanishes in Coulomb gauge, but it is unclear how this criterion is related to the spectrum of the corresponding Faddeev-Popov operator, which can be used to formulate a quite different criterion for Coulomb confinement. The purpose of this article is to connect the two seemingly different Coulomb confineme…
The Coulomb gauge in QCD is the only explicitly unitary gauge. But it suffers from energy-divergences which means that it is not rigorously well-defined. One way to define it unambiguously is as the limit of a gauge interpolating between the Landau gauge and the Coulomb gauge. This interpolating gauge is characterised by a parameter theta and the Coulomb gauge is obtained in the limit theta tends to zero. We study the renormalization of this theta-gauge for all values of theta, and note some special features of it.
The topological susceptibility is calculated within the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge, using the vacuum wave functional previously determined by a variational solution of the Yang-Mills Schroedinger equation. The numerical result agrees qualitatively with the predictions of lattice simulations.
We discuss the new Coulomb gauge method for testing confinement and measuring the string tension in the context of the Schwinger model and compact QED in 3 dimensions.
We report results on the Coulomb-gauge ghost propagator and the color-Coulomb potential computed in two lattice gauge-field ensembles: (1) configurations derived from our recently proposed Yang-Mills vacuum wave functional in 2+1 dimensions, and (2) lattices generated by Monte Carlo simulations of the three-dimensional Euclidean SU(2) lattice gauge theory with the Wilson action. We observe remarkable agreement between the ghost propagators in both ensembles, but some differences in the potentials. Those originate from rare configurations with very small values of the lowest eigenvalue of the C…
A detailed discussion of the renormalization properties of a class of gauges which interpolates among the Landau, Coulomb and Maximal Abelian gauges is provided in the framework of the algebraic renormalization in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in four dimensions.
I consider the problem of generalising the Abelian Coulomb gauge condition to the non-Abelian Yang-Mills theory, with an arbitrary compact and semi-simple gauge group. It is shown that a straightforward generalisation exists, which reduces the Gauss law into a form involving the gauge potentials only, but not their time derivatives. The existence and uniqueness of the generalised Coulomb gauge is shown to depend on an elliptic linear partial differential equation for a Lie-algebra valued quantity, which defines the gauge transform by means of which the generalised Coulomb gauge condition is re…
The time-time component of the gluon propagator in the Coulomb gauge is believed to provide a long-range confining force. We give the result, including finite parts, for the $ D_{00} $ propagator to order $ g^2 $ in the Coulomb gauge.
We calculate the lattice quark propagator in Coulomb gauge both from dynamical and quenched configurations. We show that in the continuum limit both the static and full quark propagator are multiplicatively renormalizable. From the propagator we extract the quark renormalization function Z(|p|) and the running mass M(|p|) and extrapolate the latter to the chiral limit. We find that M(|p|) practically coincides with the corresponding Landau gauge function for small momenta. The computation of M(|p|) can be however made more efficient in Coulomb gauge; this can lead to a better determination of …
In the Hamiltonian approach to Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory, the functional Schroedinger equation is solved variationally resulting in a set of coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations. These equations are solved self-consistently in the subcritical regime defined by infrared finite form factors. It is shown that the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the Coulomb form factor fails to have a solution in the critical regime where all form factors have infrared divergent power laws.
The ghost propagator and the Coulomb potential are evaluated in Coulomb gauge on the lattice, using an improved gauge fixing scheme which includes the residual symmetry. This setting has been shown to be essential in order to explain the scaling violations in the instantaneous gluon propagator. We find that both the ghost propagator and the Coulomb potential are insensitive to the Gribov problem or the details of the residual gauge fixing, even if the Coulomb potential is evaluated from the A0--propagator instead of the Coulomb kernel. In particular, no signs of scaling violations could be fou…
We study the Hamiltonian approach to 1+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge, considering both the pure Coulomb gauge and the gauge where in addition the remaining constant gauge field is restricted to the Cartan algebra. We evaluate the corresponding Faddeev-Popov determinants, resolve Gauss' law and derive the Hamiltonians, which differ in both gauges due to additional zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov kernel in the pure Coulomb gauge. By Gauss' law the zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov kernel constrain the physical wave functionals to zero colour charge states. We solve the Schroedin…
A thorough study of 4-dimensional SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is performed using large scale lattice simulations. The (equal-time) transverse gluon propagator, the ghost form factor d(p) and the Coulomb potential V_{coul} (p) ~ d^2(p) f(p)/p^2 are calculated. For large momenta p, the gluon propagator decreases like 1/p^{1+η} with η=0.5(1). At low momentum, the propagator is weakly momentum dependent. The small momentum behavior of the Coulomb potential is consistent with linear confinement. We find that the inequality σ_{coul} \ge σcomes close to be saturated. Finally, we provide …
We analyze the lattice SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge. We show that the static gluon propagator is multiplicative renormalizable and takes the simple form $D(|\vec{p}|)^{-1}=\sqrt{|\vec{p}|^2+M^4/|\vec{p}|^2}$, proposed by Gribov through heuristic arguments many years ago. We find $M=0.88(1) {\rm GeV} \simeq 2 \sqrtσ$.
We consider a variational approach to the finite temperature Yang-Mills theory in the Coulomb gauge. The partition function is computed in the ensemble of glueballs and quasi-gluons which emerge as eigenstates of the Coulomb gauge Hamiltonian. We compute the energy density and pressure and compare with results of lattice computations for both SU(2) and SU(3). The emergence of a phase transition is discussed.
At 2-loop order, Feynman integrals in the Coulomb gauge are divergent over the internal energy variables. Nevertheless, it is known how to calculate the effective action provided that the external gluon fields are all transverse. We show that, for the two-gluon Greens function as an example, the method can be extended to include longitudinal external fields. The longitudinal Greens functions appear in the BRST identities. As an intermediate step, we use a flow gauge, which interpolates between the Feynman and Coulomb gauges.
In the Coulomb gauge, the Hamiltonian of QCD contains terms of order h^2, identified by Christ and Lee, which are non-local but instantaneous. The question is addressed how these terms fit in with BRST invariance. Our discussion is confined to the simplest, O(g^4), example.
The vacuum wave functional of Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory is determined within the variational principle and used to calculate various Green functions and observables. The results show that heavy quarks are confined by a linearly rising potential and gluons cannot propagate over large distances. The 't Hooft loop shows a perimeter law and thus also indicates confinement.
To study ``physical'' gauges such as the Coulomb, light-cone, axial or temporal gauge, we consider ``interpolating'' gauges which interpolate linearly between a covariant gauge, such as the Feynman or Landau gauge, and a physical gauge. Lorentz breaking by the gauge-fixing term of interpolating gauges is controlled by extending the BRST method to include not only the local gauge group, but also the global Lorentz group. We enumerate the possible divergences of interpolating gauges, and show that they are renormalizable, and we show that the expectation value of physical observables is the same…
The quark sector of Coulomb gauge quantum chromodynamics is considered within the functional integral approach. The quark contributions to the Dyson-Schwinger equations are derived and one-loop perturbative results for the two-point functions are presented. The problem of confinement is addressed in the heavy quark limit, by rewriting the generating functional of quantum chromodynamics in terms of a heavy quark mass expansion. By restricting to leading order in this expansion and considering only the two-point functions of the Yang-Mills sector, the rainbow-ladder approximation to the gap and …
The Dyson-Schwinger equations arising from minimizing the vacuum energy density in the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge are solved numerically. A new solution is presented which gives rise to a strictly linearly rising static quark potential and whose existence was previously observed in the infrared analysis of the Dyson-Schwinger equations. For the new solution we also present the static quark potential and calculate the running coupling constant from the ghost-gluon vertex.
The Faddeev-Popov determinant of Landau gauge in d dimensions and Coulomb gauge in d+1 dimensions is calculated in the heat-kernel expansion up to next-to-leading order. The UV-divergent parts in d=3,4 are isolated and the counterterms required for a non-perturbative treatment of the Faddeev-Popov determinant are determined.
We study the consistency of the non-Abelian Coulomb gauge. There are energy divergences in individual diagrams, which are known to cancel at 2-loop order when suitable sets of diagrams are summed. We investigate to 3-loop order the inclusion of UV divergent sub-graphs into the energy divergences. In all the examples we study, we find sets of graphs which are free of energy divergences. We make use of an interpolating gauge to regularise the energy divergences while integrals are manipulated. We comment on radiative corrections to the Christ-Lee terms in the Hamiltonian.
We apply negative dimensional integration method (NDIM) to three outstanding gauges: Feynman, light-cone and Coulomb gauges. Our aim is to show that NDIM is a very suitable technique to deal with loop integrals, being them originated from any gauge choice. In Feynman gauge we perform scalar two-loop four-point massless integrals; in the light-cone gauge we calculate scalar two-loop integrals contributing for two-point functions without any kind of prescriptions, since NDIM can abandon such devices -- this calculation is the first test of our prescriptionless method beyond one-loop order; final…
In the Coulomb gauge of QCD, the Hamiltonian contains a non-linear Christ-Lee term, which may alternatively be derived from a careful treatment of ambiguous Feynman integrals at 2-loop order. We investigate how and if UV divergences from higher order graphs can be consistently absorbed by renormalization of the Christ-Lee term. We find that they cannot.
The non-perturbative domain of QCD contains confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, and the bound state spectrum. For the calculation of the latter, the Coulomb gauge is particularly well-suited. Access to these non-perturbative properties should be possible by means of the Green's functions. However, Coulomb gauge is also very involved, and thus hard to tackle. We introduce a novel BRST-type operator r, and show that the left-hand side of Gauss' law is r-exact. We investigate a possible truncation scheme of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in first-order formalism for the propagators based on an …
