Force potential exerting between two classical static sources of pure non-abelian gauge theory in the Coulomb gauge is reconsidered at a periodic/twisted box of size $L^3$. Its perturbative behavior is examined by the short-distance expansion as well as by the derivative expansion. The latter expansion to one-loop order confirms the well-known change in the effective coupling constant at the Coulomb part as well as the Uehling potential while the former is given by the convolution of two Coulomb Green functions being non-singular at $\bm{x}=\bm{y}$. The effect of the twist comes in through its Green function of the sector.
A detailed discussion of the renormalization properties of a class of gauges which interpolates among the Landau, Coulomb and Maximal Abelian gauges is provided in the framework of the algebraic renormalization in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in four dimensions.
The renormalization group flows of the coupling constants for the gauged U(N) vector model, with N_f massless fermions in the defining representation, are studied in the large N limit, to all orders in the scalar coupling lambda, leading order in 1/N, and lowest two orders in the gauge coupling g^2. It is shown that the restrictions of asymptotic freedom, and the reality of the coupling constants throughout the flows, places important restrictions on N_f/N. For the case with massless mesons, these conditions are sufficiently restrictive to imply the existence of an infrared fixed-point (g_*,la…
The non-Abelian analog of the classical Coulomb gas is discussed. The statistical mechanics of arrays of classical particles which transform under various representations of a non-Abelian gauge group and which interact through non-Abelian electric fields are considered. The problem is formulated on the lattice and, for the case of adjoint charges, it is solved in the large N limit. The explicit solution exhibits a first order confinement-de-confinement phase transition with computable properties. In one dimension, the solution has a continuum limit which describes 1+1-dimensional quantum chrom…
In this work we develop an approach to obtain analytical expressions for potentials in an impenetrable box. It is illustrated through the particular cases of the harmonic oscillator and the Coulomb potential. In this kind of system the energy expression respect the correct quantum limits, which is a very important quality. The similarity of this kind of problem with the quasi exactly solvable potentials is explored in order to accomplish our goals.
The problem of computing the thermodynamic properties of a one-dimensional gas of particles which transform in the adjoint representation of the gauge group and interact through non-Abelian electric fields is formulated and solved in the large $N$ limit. The explicit solution exhibits a first order confinement-deconfinement phase transition with computable properties and describes two dimensional adjoint QCD in the limit where matter field masses are large.
Box graphs, or equivalently Coulomb phases of three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories with matter, give a succinct, comprehensive and elegant characterization of crepant resolutions of singular elliptically fibered varieties. Furthermore, the box graphs predict that the phases are organized in terms of a network of flop transitions. The geometric construction of the resolutions associated to the phases is, however, a difficult problem. Here, we identify a correspondence between box graphs for the gauge algebras su(2k+1) with resolutions obtained using toric tops and generalizations…
The confinement of electromagnetic field is studied in axial symmetrical, warped, 6D World Brane, using a recently proposed topological abelian string vortex solution as background. It was found, that the massless gauge field fluctuations follow 4D Maxwell equations in the Lorenz gauge. The massless zero mode is localized when the thickness of the string-vortex is less than 5% $β/4πe^{2}$ there are not others localized massless modes. There is also an infinite of non localized massive Fourier modes, that follow 4 dimensional Proca equations with a continuous spectrum. To compute the correction…
An exact solution for an SU(2) Yang-Mills field coupled to a scalar field is given. This solution has potentials with a linear and Coulomb part. This may have some physical importance since many phenomenological QCD studies assume a linear plus Coulomb potential. Usually the linear potential is motivated with lattice gauge theory arguments. Here the linear potential is an exact result of the field equations. We also show that in the Nielsen-Olesen Abelian model there is an exact solution in the BPS limit which has a Coulomb-like electromagnetic field and a logarithmically rising scalar field. …
We consider a vectorial, asymptotically free SU($N_c$) gauge theory with $N_f$ fermions in a representation $R$ having an infrared (IR) fixed point. We calculate and analyze Padé approximants to scheme-independent series expansions for physical quantities at this IR fixed point, including the anomalous dimension, $γ_{\barψψ,IR}$, to $O(Δ_f^4)$, and the derivative of the beta function, $β'_{IR}$, to $O(Δ_f^5)$, where $Δ_f$ is an $N_f$-dependent expansion variable. We consider the fundamental, adjoint, and rank-2 symmetric tensor representations. The results are applied to obtain further estimat…
The statistical mechanics of a mixed gas of adjoint and fundamental representation charges interacting via 1+1-dimensional U(N) gauge fields is investigated. In the limit of large N we show that there is a first order deconfining phase transition for low densities of fundamental charges. As the density of fundamental charges becomes comparable to the adjoint charge density the phase transition becomes a third order one.
The abelian Higgs model and its phase structure are discussed from the perspective that the gauge and scalar fields admit a dual description in terms of fermion variables. The results which indicate the presence of three main phases: Coulomb, Higgs and confinement agree well with those in the literature although a nonstandard order parameter is employed.
I consider the problem of generalising the Abelian Coulomb gauge condition to the non-Abelian Yang-Mills theory, with an arbitrary compact and semi-simple gauge group. It is shown that a straightforward generalisation exists, which reduces the Gauss law into a form involving the gauge potentials only, but not their time derivatives. The existence and uniqueness of the generalised Coulomb gauge is shown to depend on an elliptic linear partial differential equation for a Lie-algebra valued quantity, which defines the gauge transform by means of which the generalised Coulomb gauge condition is re…
It is shown that on curved backgrounds, the Coulomb gauge Faddeev-Popov operator can have zero modes even in the abelian case. These zero modes cannot be eliminated by restricting the path integral over a certain region in the space of gauge potentials. The conditions for the existence of these zero modes are studied for static spherically symmetric spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions. For this class of metrics, the general analytic expression of the metric components in terms of the zero modes is constructed. Such expression allows to find the asymptotic behavior of background metrics, which i…
We investigate numerically the properties of the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen strings in 4D abelian Higgs model. The fractal dimension D_f of the vortex strings was found to be large in the Coulomb phase and it is close to 2 in the Higgs phase. We also show that the Wilson loop for non-integer charges is correlated with the linking number of the vortex string world sheets and the test particle world trajectory. We find that this topological (Aharonov-Bohm) interaction gives the main contribution to the Wilson loop quantum average for non-integer test charges in the vicinity of the Coulomb-Higgs ph…
We study the static quantum potential for a gauge theory which includes the mixing between the familiar photon $U(1)_{QED}$ and a second massive gauge field living in the so-called hidden-sector $U(1)_h$. Our discussion is carried out using the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism, which is alternative to the Wilson loop approach. Our results show that the static potential is a Yukawa correction to the usual static Coulomb potential. Interestingly, when this calculation is done inside a superconducting box, the Coulombic piece disappears leading to a screening phase.
An example of a non-Abelian Brane Box Model, namely one corresponding to a $Z_k \times D_{k'}$ orbifold singularity of $\C^3$, is constructed. Its self-consistency and hence equivalence to geometrical methods are subsequently shown. It is demonstrated how a group-theoretic twist of the non-Abelian group circumvents the problem of inconsistency that arise from na\"ıve attempts at the construction.
This paper tests a conjecture on discrete non-Abelian gauging of 3d $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. Given a parent quiver with a bouquet of $n$ nodes of rank $1$, invariant under a discrete $S_n$ global symmetry, one can construct a daughter quiver where the bouquet is substituted by a single adjoint $n$ node. Based on the main conjecture in this paper, the daughter quiver corresponds to a theory where the $S_n$ discrete global symmetry is gauged and the new Coulomb branch is a non-Abelian orbifold of the parent Coulomb branch. We demonstrate and test the conjecture for…
A new procedure for regularizing Feynman integrals in the noncovariant Coulomb gauge is proposed for Yang-Mills theory. The procedure is based on a variant of dimensional regularization, called split dimensional regularization, which leads to internally consistent, ambiguity-free integrals. It is demonstrated that split dimensional regularization yields a one-loop Yang-Mills self-energy that is nontransverse, but local. Despite the noncovariant nature of the Coulomb gauge, ghosts are necessary in order to satisfy the appropriate Ward/BRS identity. The computed Coulomb-gauge Feynman integrals a…
We establish the phase diagram of the five-dimensional anisotropic Abelian Higgs model by mean field techniques and Monte Carlo simulations. The anisotropy is encoded in the gauge couplings as well as in the Higgs couplings. In addition to the usual bulk phases (confining, Coulomb and Higgs) we find four-dimensional ``layered'' phases (3-branes) at weak gauge coupling, where the layers may be in either the Coulomb or the Higgs phase, while the transverse directions are confining.
We count Higgs "phase" BPS states of general non-Abelian quiver, possibly with loops, by mapping the problem to its Abelian, or toric, counterpart and imposing Weyl invariance later. Precise Higgs index computation is particularly important for quivers with superpotentials; the Coulomb "phase" index is recently shown to miss important BPS states, dubbed intrinsic Higgs states or quiver invariants. We demonstrate how the refined Higgs index is naturally decomposed to a sum over partitions of the charge. We conjecture, and show in simple cases, that this decomposition expresses the Higgs index a…
The scheme of isospin separation is suggested for the equation describing the five-dimensional 'charge-dyon' system in a non-Abelian SU(2) model. As a result, we obtain the Schrodinger equation for 'bare' particle, moving in Coulomb potential plus potential of five-dimensional Dirac monopole.
The degeneracy of energy levels in a quantum dot of Hall fluid, leading to conductance peaks, can be readily derived from the partition functions of conformal field theory. Their complete expressions can be found for Hall states with both Abelian and non-Abelian statistics, upon adapting known results for the annulus geometry. We analyze the Abelian states with hierarchical filling fractions, ν=m/(mp \pm 1), and find a non trivial pattern of conductance peaks. In particular, each one of them occurs with a characteristic multiplicity, that is due to the extended symmetry of the m-folded edge. E…
A summary is reported on our previous publications about four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric Spin(10) gauge theory with chiral superfields in the spinor and vector representations in the non-Abelian Coulomb phase. Carrying out the method of a-maximization, we studied decoupling operators in the infrared and the renormalization flow of the theory. We also give a brief review on the non-Abelian Coulomb phase of the theory after recalling the unitarity bound and the a-maximization procedure in four-dimensional conformal field theory. This is a review article invited to International Journal of Mo…
We study properties of the Abelian monopoles in the Maximal Abelian projection of the three dimensional pure SU(2) gauge model. We match the lattice monopole dynamics with the continuum Coulomb gas model using a method of blocking from continuum. We obtain the Debye screening length and the monopole density in continuum using numerical results for the lattice density of the (squared) monopole charges and for the monopole action. The monopoles treated within our blocking method provide about 75% contribution to the non--Abelian Debye screening length. We also find that monopoles form a Coulomb …
A mechanism using the position-dependent gauge coupling is proposed to localize non-Abelian gauge fields on domain walls in five-dimensional space-time. Low-energy effective theory posseses a massless vector field, and a mass gap. The four-dimensional gauge invariance is maintained intact. We obtain perturbatively the four-dimensional Coulomb law for static sources on the domain wall. BPS domain wall solutions with the localization mechanism are explicitly constructed in the U(1)xU(1) supersymmetric gauge theory coupling to the non-Abelian gauge fields only through the cubic prepotential, whic…
We investigate the temporal Wilson loop using the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory. In simple cases such as the Abelian theory or the non-Abelian theory in (1+1) dimensions, the known results can be reproduced using unitary transformations to take care of time evolution. We show how Coulomb gauge can be used for an alternative solution if the exact ground state wave functional is known. In the most interesting case of Yang-Mills theory in (3+1) dimensions, the vacuum wave functional is not known, but recent variational approaches in Coulomb gauge give a decent approximation. We use th…
We introduce a variant of the $K$-theoretic quantized Coulomb branch constructed by Braverman--Finkelberg--Nakajima, by application of a new virtual intersection theory. In the abelian case, we define Verma modules for such virtual Coulomb branches, and relate them to the moduli spaces of quasimaps into the corresponding Higgs branches. The descendent vertex functions, defined by $K$-theoretic quasimap invariants of the Higgs branch, can be realized as the associated Whittaker functions. The quantum $q$-difference modules and Bethe algebras (analogue of quantum $K$-theory rings) can then be de…
We find 3-brane Higgs and Coulomb phases in the 5D Abelian Higgs Model and determine the transition surfaces that separate them from the usual bulk phases.
Gauge field theory with rank-one field $T_μ$ is a quantum field theory that describes the interaction of elementary spin-1 particles, of which being massless to preserve gauge symmetry. In this paper, we give a generalized, extended study of abelian gauge field theory under successive rotor model in general $D$-dimensional flat spacetime for spin-1 particles in the context of higher order derivatives. We establish a theorem that $n$ rotor contributes to the $\Box^n T^μ$ fields in the integration-by-parts formalism of the action. This corresponds to the transformation of gauge field $T^μ \right…
We construct and study a two parameter gauged linear sigma model with gauge group $(U(1)^2\times O(2))/{\mathbb Z}_2$ that has a dual model with gauge group $(U(1)^2\times SO(4))/{\mathbb Z}_2$. The model has two geometric phases, three hybrid phases and one phase whose character is unknown. One of the geometric phases is strongly coupled and the other is weakly coupled, where strong versus weak is exchanged under the duality. They correspond to two Calabi-Yau manifolds with $(h^{1,1},h^{2,1})=(2,24)$ which are birationally inequivalent but are expected to be derived equivalent. A region of th…
We investigate the temporal Wilson loop using the Hamiltonian approach to Yang-Mills theory. In simple cases such as the Abelian theory or the non-Abelian theory in (1+1) dimensions, the known results can be derived using unitary transformations to take care of time evolution. Alternatively, the exact solution can also be found in Coulomb gauge using the exact ground state wave functional which is known explicitly in these simple cases. The Coulomb gauge technique can also be applied to the more realistic case of Yang-Mills theory in (3+1) dimensions, where one has to rely on the approximate v…
The existence of abelian gauge symmetries in four-dimensional F-theory compactifications depends on the global geometry of the internal Calabi-Yau fourfold and has important phenomenological consequences. We study conceptual and phenomenological aspects of such U(1) symmetries along the Coulomb and the Higgs branch. As one application we examine abelian gauge factors arising after a certain global restriction of the Tate model that goes beyond a local spectral cover analysis. In SU(5) GUT models this mechanism enforces a global U(1)_X symmetry that prevents dimension-4 proton decay and allows …
We consider the monopole-antimonopole static potential in the confining phase of the Abelian Higgs model and in particular the corrections to the Coulomb-like potential at small distances r. By minimizing numerically the classical energy functional we observe a linear in r, stringy correction even at distances much smaller than the apparent physical scales. We argue that this term is a manifestation of the condition that the monopoles are connected by a mathematically thin line along which the scalar field vanishes. These short strings modify the operator product expansion as well. Implication…
The variational approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge is revisited. By assuming the non-Abelian Coulomb potential to be given by the sum of its infrared and ultraviolet parts, i.e.~by a linearly rising potential and an ordinary Coulomb potential, and by using a Slater determinant ansatz for the quark wave functional, which contains the coupling of the quarks and the gluons with two different Dirac structures, we obtain variational equations for the kernels of the fermionic vacuum wave functional, which are free of ultraviolet divergences. Thereby, a Gaussian type wave functional is assumed for the …
We study two types of discrete operations on Coulomb branches of $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories using both abelianisation and the monopole formula. We generalise previous work on discrete quotients of Coulomb branches and introduce novel wreathed quiver theories. We further study quiver folding which produces Coulomb branches of non-simply laced quivers.
We construct finite mass, asymptotically flat black hole solutions in d=4 Einstein-Yang-Mills theory augmented with higher order curvature terms of the gauge field. They possess non-Abelian hair in addition to Coulomb electric charge, and, below some non-zero critical temperature, they are thermodynamically preferred over the Reissner-Nordstrom solution. Our results indicate the existence of hairy non-Abelian black holes which are stable under linear, spherically symmetric perturbations.
Static spherically symmetric asymptotically flat charged black hole solutions are constructed within the magnetic SU(3) sector of the 4-dimensional heterotic string effective action. They possess non-abelian hair in addition to the Coulomb magnetic field and are qualitatively similar to the Einstein-Yang-Mills colored SU(3) black holes except for the extremal case. In the extremality limit the horizon shrinks and the resulting geometry around the origin coincides with that of an extremal abelian dilatonic black hole with magnetic charge. Non-abelian hair exibits then typical sphaleron structur…
Time-reversal invariant three-dimensional topological insulators can be defined fundamentally by a topological field theory with a quantized axion angle theta of zero or pi. It was recently shown that fractional quantized values of theta are consistent with time-reversal invariance if deconfined, gapped, fractionally charged bulk excitations appear in the low-energy spectrum due to strong correlation effects, leading to the concept of a fractional topological insulator. These fractionally charged excitations are coupled to emergent gauge fields which ensure that the microscopic degrees of free…
We study the consistency of the non-Abelian Coulomb gauge. There are energy divergences in individual diagrams, which are known to cancel at 2-loop order when suitable sets of diagrams are summed. We investigate to 3-loop order the inclusion of UV divergent sub-graphs into the energy divergences. In all the examples we study, we find sets of graphs which are free of energy divergences. We make use of an interpolating gauge to regularise the energy divergences while integrals are manipulated. We comment on radiative corrections to the Christ-Lee terms in the Hamiltonian.
In this work, the quantization of the Yang-Mills theory is worked out by means of Dirac's canonical quantization method, using the generalized Coulomb gauge fixing conditions. Following the construction of the matrix composed of all the second class constraints of the theory, its convenience within the framework of the canonical approach is discussed. Although this method can be used successfully in the quantization of the Abelian theories, it brings along difficulties for the non-Abelian case, which can not be handled easily even for the generalized Coulomb gauge of the Yang-Mills theory.
A general expression of the hard thermal loop gluon propagator is given for a variety of abelian gauge fixing conditions (Coulomb gauge, axial gauge, covariant gauge, temporal gauge ...) The current --- current interaction energy, in particular the Coulomb energy, is shown to be independent of the gauge fixing condition (not only of the parameter).
The dual theory describing the 4D Coulomb gas of point-like magnetically charged objects, which confines closed electric strings, is considered. The respective generalization of the theory of confining strings to confining membranes is further constructed. The same is done for the analogous SU(3)-inspired model. We then consider a combined model which confines both electric charges and closed strings. Such a model is nothing, but the mixture of the above-mentioned Coulomb gas with the condensate of the dual Higgs field, described by the dual Abelian Higgs model. It is demonstrated that in a ce…
Partition functions of edge excitations are obtained for non-Abelian Hall states in the second Landau level, such as the anti-Read-Rezayi state, the Bonderson-Slingerland hierarchy and the Wen non-Abelian fluid, as well as for the non-Abelian spin-singlet state. The derivation is straightforward and unique starting from the non-Abelian conformal field theory data and solving the modular invariance conditions. The partition functions provide a complete account of the excitation spectrum and are used to describe experiments of Coulomb blockade and thermopower.
The Aharonov-Bohm effect has been invoked to probe the phase structure of a gauge theory. Yet in the case of non-Abelian gauge theories, it proves difficult to formulate a general procedure that unambiguously specifies the realization of the gauge symmetry, e.g. the unbroken subgroup. In this paper, we propose a set of order parameters that will do the job. We articulate the fact that any useful Aharonov-Bohm experiment necessarily proceeds in two stages: calibration and measurement. World sheets of virtual cosmic string loops can wrap around test charges, thus changing their states relative t…
Three dimensional abelian gauge theories classically in a Coulomb phase are affected by IR divergences even when the matter fields are all massive. Using generalizations of Ward-Takahashi identities, we show that correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators are IR finite to all orders in perturbation theory. Gauge invariance is sufficient but not necessary for IR finiteness. In particular we show that specific gauge-variant correlators, including the two-point function of matter fields, are also IR finite to all orders in perturbation theory. Possible applications of these results are br…
Fundamental problems of quantum field theory related to the representation problem of canonical commutation relations are discussed within a gauge field version of a van Hove-type model. The Coulomb field generated by a static charge distribution is described as a formal superposition of time-like pseudo-photons in Fock space with a Krein structure. In this context, a generalization of operator gauge transformations is introduced to generate coherent states of abelian gauge fields interacting with a charged background.
We find that Polyakov lines, computed in abelian-projected SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the confined phase, have finite expectation values for lines corresponding to two units of the abelian electric charge. This means that the abelian-projected lattice has at most Z(2), rather than U(1), global symmetry. We also find a severe breakdown of the monopole dominance approximation, as well as positivity, in this charge-2 case. These results imply that the abelian-projected lattice is not adequately represented by a monopole Coulomb gas; the data is, however, consistent with a center vortex structu…
In this article we examine the Layer phase of the five dimensional, anisotropic, Abelian gauge model. Our results are to be compared with the ones of the 4D U(1) gauge model in an attempt to verify that four dimensional physics governs the four dimensional layers. The main results are: i) From the analysis of Wilson loops we verified the $\frac{1}{R}$ behavior, in the layered phase, for the potential between heavy charges. The renormalized fine structure constant in the layer phase is found to be equal to that of 4D Coulomb phase,$α_{layer}$=$α_{4D}$. ii) Based on the helicity modulus analysis…
We use a gauge-invariant regularization procedure, called ``split dimensional regularization'', to evaluate the quark self-energy $Σ(p)$ and quark-quark-gluon vertex function $Λ_μ(p^\prime,p)$ in the Coulomb gauge, $\vec{\bigtriangledown}\cdot\vec{A}^a = 0$. The technique of split dimensional regularization was designed to regulate Coulomb-gauge Feynman integrals in non-Abelian theories. The technique which is based on two complex regulating parameters, $ω$ and $σ$, is shown to generate a well-defined set of Coulomb-gauge integrals. A major component of this project deals with the evaluation o…
We propose a construction of the quantum-corrected Coulomb branch of a general 3d gauge theory with $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry, in terms of local coordinates associated with an abelianized theory. In a fixed complex structure, the holomorphic functions on the Coulomb branch are given by expectation values of chiral monopole operators. We construct the chiral ring of such operators, using equivariant integration over BPS moduli spaces. We also quantize the chiral ring, which corresponds to placing the 3d theory in a 2d Omega background. Then, by unifying all complex structures in a twistor s…
Van Holten's covariant Hamiltonian framework is used to find conserved quantities for an isospin-carrying particle in a non-Abelian monopole-like field. For a Wu-Yang monopole we find the most general scalar potential such that the combined system admits a conserved Runge-Lenz vector. It generalizes the fine-tuned inverse-square plus Coulomb potential, found before by McIntosh and Cisneros, and by Zwanziger, for a charged particle in the field of a Dirac monopole. Following Fehér, the result is interpreted as describing motion in the asymptotic field of a self-dual Prasad-Sommerfield monopole.…
We study the low energy behaviour of N=(2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories in 1+1 dimensions, with orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups and matters in the fundamental representation. We observe supersymmetry breaking in super-Yang-Mills theory and in theories with small numbers of flavors. For larger numbers of flavors, we discover duality between regular theories with different gauge groups and matter contents, where regularity refers to absence of quantum Coulomb branch. The result is applied to study families of superconformal field theories that can be used for superstring compactificati…
We consider Yang-Mills theory in Euclidean space-time $(R^4)$ and construct its configuration space. The orbits are first shown to form a congruence set. Then we discuss the orthogonal gauge condition in Abelian theory and show that Coulomb-like surfaces foliate the entire configuration space. In the non-Abelian case, where these exists no global orthogonal gauge, we derive the non-linear gauge proposed previously by the author by modifying the orthogonality condition. However, unlike the Abelian case, the entire configuration space cannot be foliated by submanifolds defined by the non-linear …
We study confinement in softly broken N=2 SUSY QCD with gauge group SU(N_c) and N_f hypermultiplets of fundamental matter (quarks) when the Coulomb branch is lifted by small mass of adjoint matter. Concentrating mostly on the theory with SU(3) gauge group we discuss the N=1 vacua which arise in the weak coupling at large values of quark masses and study flux tubes and monopole confinement in these vacua. In particular we find the BPS strings in SU(3) gauge theory formed by two interacting U(1) gauge fields and two scalar fields generalizing ordinary Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices. Then we f…
