S. Donaldson introduced a metric on the space of volume forms, with fixed total volume on any compact Riemmanian manifold. With this metric, the space of volume forms formally has non-positive curvature. The geodesic equation is a fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equation. We solve the geodesic equation and its perturbed equation and prove that the space of volume forms is an infinite dimensional non-positively curved metric space in the sense of Alexandrov.
We prove a $C^{1,1}$ estimate for solutions of a class of fully nonlinear equations introduced by Chen-He. As an application, we prove the $C^{1,1}$ regularity of geodesics in the space of volume forms.
In this article, we continue the work in \cite{GL} and study a normalized hypersurface flow in the more general ambient setting of warped product spaces. This flow preserves the volume of the bounded domain enclosed by a graphical hypersurface, and monotonically decreases the hypersurface area. As an application, the isoperimetric problem in warped product spaces is solved for such domains.
We consider the dynamic property of the volume preserving mean curvature flow. This flow was introduced by Huisken who also proved it converges to a round sphere of the same enclosed volume if the initial hypersurface is strictly convex in Euclidean space. We study the stability of this flow in hyperbolic space. In particular, we prove that if the initial hypersurface is hyperbolically mean convex and close to an umbilical sphere in the $L^2$-sense, then the flow exists for all time and converges exponentially to an umbilical sphere.
We consider curvature flows in hyperbolic space with a monotone, symmetric, homogeneous of degree 1 curvature function F. Furthermore we assume F to be either concave and inverse concave or convex. For compact initial hypersurfaces, which are strictly convex by horospheres, we show the long time existence of mixed volume preserving curvature flows. Furthermore we show that these flows converge exponentially in the C-infinity topology to a geodesic sphere.
For a sequence of immersed connected closed Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submaniolds in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ with uniform bounds on their volumes and the total extrinsic curvatures, we prove that a subsequence converges either to a point or to a Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian $n$-varifold locally uniformly in $C^{k}$ for any nonnegative integer $k$ away from a finite set of points, and the limit is Hamiltonian stationary in ${\mathbb{C}}^{n}$. We also obtain a theorem on extending Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds $L$ across a compact set $N$ of Hausdorff codimension at least …
Let $M$ be a Riemannian manifold with dimension greater or equal to $3$ which admits a complete, finite-volume Riemannian metric $g_0$ locally isometric to a rank-1 symmetric space of non-compact type. The volume entropy rigidity theorem asserts that $g_0$ minimizes a normalized volume growth entropy among all complete, finite-volume, Riemannian metric on $M$. We will repair a gap in the proof when $g_0$ is locally isometric to the Cayley hyperbolic space.
We show the asymptotics of the volume density function in the class of central harmonic manifolds can be specified arbitrarily and do not determine the geometry.
We prove a Lipschitz-Volume rigidity theorem for the non-collapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limits of manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below. This is a counterpart of the Lipschitz-Volume rigidity in Alexandrov geometry.
We introduce a natural definition of the renormalized volume of a 4-dimensional Ricci-flat ALE space. We then prove that the renormalized volume is always less or equal than zero, with equality if and only if the ALE space is isometric to its asymptotic cone. Currently the only known examples of 4-dimensional Ricci-flat ALE spaces are Kronheimer's gravitational instantons and their quotients, which are also known to be the only possible examples of special holonomy. We calculate the renormalized volume of these spaces in terms of Kronheimer's period map.
In this paper, we prove that principal circle bundles over the complex projective space equipped with the standard Sasakian structures are volume rigid among all $K$-contact manifolds satisfying positivity conditions of tensors involing the Tanaka-Webster curvature.
We will show that the quantitative maximal volume entropy rigidity holds on Alexandrov spaces. More precisely, given $N, D$, there exists $ε(N, D)>0$, such that for $ε<ε(N, D)$, if $X$ is an $N$-dimensional Alexandrov space with curvature $\geq -1$, $\operatorname{diam}(X)\leq D, h(X)\geq N-1-ε$, then $X$ is Gromov-Hausdorff close to a hyperbolic manifold. This result extends the quantitive maximal volume entropy rigidity of \cite{CRX} to Alexandrov spaces. And we will also give a quantitative maximal volume entropy rigidity for $\op{RCD}^*$-spaces in the non-collapsing case.
We examine volume pinching problems of CAT(1) spaces. We characterize a class of compact geodesically complete CAT(1) spaces of small specific volume. We prove a sphere theorem for compact CAT(1) homology manifolds of small volume. We also formulate a criterion of manifold recognition for homology manifolds on volume growths under an upper curvature bound.
In this paper, we investigate the volume-prserving mean curvature flow starting from a tube (of nonconstant radius) over a compact closed domain of a reflective submanifold in a symmetric space. We prove that the tubeness is preserved along the flow under certain conditions.
We introduce a notion of Hilbertian n-volume in metric spaces with Besicovitch-type inequalities built-in into the definitions. which, ultimately, may turn useful for an approach to singular spaces with positive scalar curvature
We prove a conjecture saying that complex projective space has maximal volume (degree) among all toric Kaehler-Einstein manifolds of dimension n. The proof is inspired by our recent work on sharp Moser-Trudinger and Brezis-Merle type inequalities for the complex Monge-Ampere operator, but is essentially self-contained.
We prove that `volume cone implies metric cone' in the setting of RCD spaces, thus generalising to this class of spaces a well known result of Cheeger-Colding valid in Ricci-limit spaces.
In this paper, we obtain two-sided bounds for the volumes of the Aloff-Wallach spaces $W(p,q),$ compute maximal and minimal sectional curvature for the spaces $W(n,n+1),$ and use this information to estimate the injectivity radii: We derive an upper bound for the injectivity radii of $W(p,q)$ and a lower bound for the injectivity radii of $W(n,n+1).$
The paper proposes a notion of volume element for Finsler spaces with metrics of Lorentzian signature, equipped with a time orientation. This notion is based on a slight modification of the idea of Holmes-Thompson volume element working for positive definite Finsler metrics and can be used in field-theoretical applications on a Finslerian background. Though the approach assumes the existence of a time orientation, the volume element does not depend on its choice.
For any closed smooth Riemannian manifold H. Weyl has defined a sequence of numbers called today intrinsic volumes. They include volume, Euler characteristic, and integral of the scalar curvature. We conjecture that absolute values of all intrinsic volumes are bounded by a constant depending only on the dimension of the manifold, upper bound on its diameter, and lower bound on the sectional curvature. Furthermore we conjecture that intrinsic volumes can be defined for some (so called smoothable) Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below and state few of the expected properties of them, pa…
Equal-volume polygons are obtained from adequate discretizations of curves in 3-space, contained or not in surfaces. In this paper we explore the similarities of these polygons with the affine arc-length parameterized smooth curves to develop a theory of discrete affine invariants. Besides obtaining discrete affine invariants, equal-volume polygons can also be used to estimate projective invariants of a planar curve. This theory has many potential applications, among them evaluation of the quality and computation of affine invariants of silhouette curves.
The main results of this paper consists of two parts. Firstly, we obtain an almost rigidity theorem which says that on a RCD(0, N) space, when a domain between two level sets of a distance function has almost maximal volume compared to that of a cylinder, then this portion is close to a cylinder as a metric space. Secondly, we apply this almost rigidity theorem to study noncompact RCD(0, N) spaces with linear volume growth. More precisely, we obtain the sublinear growth of diameter of geodesic spheres, and study the non-existence of harmonic functions with polynomial growth on such RCD(0,N) sp…
We discuss Witten's formulas for the symplectic volumes of moduli spaces of flat connections on 2-manifolds from the viewpoint of Hamiltonian cobordism as introduced by Ginzburg-Guillemin-Karshon.
In this note, we estimate the upper bound of volume of closed positively or nonnegatively curved Alexandrov space $X$ with strictly convex boundary. We also discuss the equality case. In particular, the Boundary Conjecture holds when the volume upper bound is achieved. Our theorem also can be applied to Riemannian manifolds with non-smooth boundary, which generalizes Heintze and Karcher's classical volume comparison theorem. Our main tool is the gradient flow of semi-concave functions.
We prove: "If $M$ is a compact hypersurface of the hyperbolic space, convex by horospheres and evolving by the volume preserving mean curvature flow, then it flows for all time, convexity by horospheres is preserved and the flow converges, exponentially, to a geodesic sphere". In addition, we show that the same conclusions about long time existence and convergence hold if $M$ is not convex by horospheres but it is close enough to a geodesic sphere.
In this paper, we are interested in flat metric structures with conical singularities on surfaces which are obtained by deforming translation surface structures. The moduli space of such flat metric structures can be viewed as some deformation of the moduli space of translation surfaces. Using geodesic triangulations, we define a volume form on this moduli space, and show that, in the well-known cases, this volume form agrees with usual ones, up to a multiplicative constant.
The volume of the quantum mechanical state space over $n$-dimensional real, complex and quaternionic Hilbert-spaces with respect to the canonical Euclidean measure is computed, and explicit formulas are presented for the expected value of the determinant in the general setting too. The case when the state space is endowed with a monotone metric or a pull-back metric is considered too, we give formulas to compute the volume of the state space with respect to the given Riemannian metric. We present the volume of the space of qubits with respect to various monotone metrics. It turns out that the …
In this paper, we establish the rigidity result for local holomorphic volume preserving maps from an irreducible Hermitian manifold of compact type into its Cartesian products.
We show that compact, locally symmetric spaces of non-compact type have positive simplicial volume. This gives a positive answer to a question that was first raised by Gromov in 1982. We provide a summary of results that are known to follow from positivity of the simplicial volume.
We give a ``physics proof'' of a conjecture made by the first author at Strings 2005, that the moduli spaces of certain conformal field theories are finite volume in the Zamolodchikov metric, using an RG flow argument.
We prove that the space of complete, finite volume, pinched negatively curved Riemannian metrics on a smooth high-dimensional manifold is either empty or it is highly non-connected, provided their behavior at infinity is similar.
Let $M$ be a smooth, connected, compact submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^n$ without boundary and of dimension $k\geq 2$. Let $\mathbb{S}^k \subset \mathbb{R}^{k+1}\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ denote the $k$-dimesnional unit sphere. We show if $M$ has reach equal to one, then its volume satisfies $\text{vol}(M)\geq \text{vol}(\mathbb{S}^k)$ with equality holding only if $M$ is congruent to $\mathbb{S}^k$.
The volume entropy of a compact metric measure space is known to be the exponential growth rate of the measure lifted to its universal cover at infinity. For a compact Riemannian $n$-manifold with a negative lower Ricci curvature bound and a upper diameter bound, it was known that it admits an almost maximal volume entropy if and only if it is diffeomorphic and Gromov-Hausdorff close to a hyperbolic space form. We prove the quantitative rigidity of almost maximal volume entropy for $\operatorname{RCD}$-spaces with a negative lower Ricci curvature bound and Riemannian manifolds with a negative …
In this paper, we proved that the Weil-Petersson volume of Calabi-Yau moduli is a rational number. We also proved that the integrations of the invariants of the Ricci curvature of the Weil-Petersson metric with respect to the Weil-Petersson volume form are all rational numbers.
We classify the volume preserving stable hypersurfaces in the real projective space $\mathbb{RP}^n$. As a consequence, the solutions of the isoperimetric problem are tubular neighborhoods of projective subspaces $\mathbb{RP}^k\subset \mathbb{RP}^n$ (starting with points). This confirms a conjecture of Burago and Zalgaller from 1988 and extends to higher dimensions previous result of M. Ritoré and A. Ros on $\mathbb{RP}^3$. We also derive an Willmore type inequality for antipodal invariant hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^n$.
This is the second paper of two in a series under the same title ([CRX]); both study the quantitative volume space form rigidity conjecture: a closed $n$-manifold of Ricci curvature at least $(n-1)H$, $H=\pm 1$ or $0$ is diffeomorphic to a $H$-space form if for every ball of definite size on $M$, the lifting ball on the Riemannian universal covering space of the ball achieves an almost maximal volume, provided the diameter of $M$ is bounded for $H\ne 1$. In [CRX], we verified the conjecture for the case that $M$ or its Riemannian universal covering space $\tilde M$ is not collapsed for $H=1$ o…
Since non-compact RCD(0, N) spaces have at least linear volume growth, we study noncompact RCD(0, N) spaces with linear volume growth in this paper. One of the main results is that the diameter of level sets of a Busemann function grow at most linearly on a noncompact RCD(0, N) space satisfying the linear volume growth condition. Another main result in this paper is a splitting theorem at the noncompact end for a RCD(0, N) space with strongly minimal volume growth. These results generalize some theorems on noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature to non-smooth settings.
Given a closed Riemannian manifold of dimenion less than eight, we prove a compactness result for the space of closed, embedded minimal hypersurfaces satisfying a volume bound and a uniform lower bound on the first eigenvalue of the stability operator. When the latter assumption is replaced by a uniform lower bound on the p-th Jacobi eigenvalue for p greater or equal than 2 one gains strong convergence to a smooth limit submanifold away from at most p-1 points.
Let (N,g) be a Riemannian manifold. For a compact, connected and oriented submanifold M of N. we define the space of volume preserving embeddings Emb_μ(M,N) as the set of smooth embeddings f:M \rightarrow N such that f*μ^{f}=μ, where μ^{f} (resp. μ) is the Riemannian volume form on f(M) (resp. M) induced by the ambient metric g (the orientation on f(M) being induced by f). In this article, we use the Nash-Moser inverse function Theorem to show that the set of volume preserving embeddings in Emb_μ(M,N) whose mean curvature is nowhere vanishing forms a tame Fréchet manifold, and determine explic…
In this note we prove that the volume of a causal diamond associated with an inertial observer in asymptotically de Sitter 4-dimensional space-time is monotonically increasing function of cosmological time. The asymptotic value of the volume is that of in maximally symmetric de Sitter space-time. The monotonic property of the volume is checked in two cases: in vacuum and in the presence of a massless scalar field. In vacuum, the volume flow (with respect to cosmological time) asymptotically vanishes if and only if future space-like infinity is 3-manifold of constant curvature. The volume flow …
Examples show that Riemannian manifolds with almost-Euclidean lower bounds on scalar curvature and Perelman entropy need not be close to Euclidean space in any metric space sense. Here we show that if one additionally assumes an almost-Euclidean upper bound on volumes of geodesic balls, then unit balls in such a space are Gromov-Hausdorff close, and in fact bi-Hölder and bi-$W^{1,p}$ homeomorphic, to Euclidean balls. We prove a compactness and limit space structure theorem under the same assumptions.
We compute the Riemannian volume on the moduli space of flat connections on a nonorientable 2-manifold, for a natural class of metrics. We also show that Witten's volume formula for these moduli spaces may be derived using Haar measure, and we give a new proof of Witten's volume formula for the moduli space of flat connections on an orientable surface using Haar measure.
H. Hotelling proved that in the n-dimensional Euclidean or spherical space, the volume of a tube of small radius about a curve depends only on the length of the curve and the radius. A. Gray and L. Vanhecke extended Hotelling's theorem to rank one symmetric spaces computing the volumes of the tubes explicitly in these spaces. In the present paper, we generalize these results by showing that every harmonic manifold has the above tube property. We compute the volume of tubes in the Damek-Ricci spaces. We show that if a Riemannian manifold has the tube property, then it is a 2-stein D'Atri space.…
The regularity of limit spaces of Riemannian manifolds with L^p curvature bounds, $p > n/2$, is investigated under no apriori non-collapsing assumption. A regular subset, defined by a local volume growth condition for a limit measure, is shown to carry the structure of a Riemannian manifold. One consequence of this is a compactness theorem for Riemannian manifolds with $L^p$ curvature bounds and an a priori volume growth assumption in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov topology. A different notion of convergence is also studied, which replaces the exhaustion by balls in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov topo…
In this paper, we study the symplectic volume of the moduli space of polygons by using Witten's formula. We propose to use this volume as a measure for the flexibility of a polygon with fixed side-lengths. The main result of our is that among all the Spherical and Euclidean polygons with fixed perimeter the regular one is the most flexible and that among all the spherical polygons the regular one with side-length $π/2$ is the most flexible.
We consider a volume maximization program to construct hyperbolic structures on triangulated 3-manifolds, for which previous progress has lead to consider angle assignments which do not correspond to a hyperbolic metric on each simplex. We show that critical points of the generalized volume are associated to geometric structures modeled on the extended hyperbolic space -- the natural extension of hyperbolic space by the de Sitter space -- except for the degenerate case where all simplices are Euclidean in a generalized sense. Those extended hyperbolic structures can realize geometrically a dec…
The low velocity dynamic of a doubly periodic monopole, also called a monopole wall or monowall for short, is described by geodesic motion on its moduli space. This moduli space is hyperkaehler and non-compact. We establish a relation between the Kaehler potential of this moduli space and the volume of a region in Euclidean three-space cut out by a plane arrangement associated with each monowall.
The smallest $r$ so that a metric $r$-ball covers a metric space $M$ is called the radius of $M$. The volume of a metric $r$-ball in the space form of constant curvature $k$ is an upper bound for the volume of any Riemannian manifold with sectional curvature $\geq k$ and radius $\leq r$. We show that when such a manifold has volume almost equal to this upper bound, it is diffeomorphic to a sphere or a real projective space.
Connecting ideas of geometric formulation of quantum mechanics with new results in symplectic geometry a new approach to geometrical quantization procedure is proposed. As a first result we verify that the correspondence between "classical" Poisson bracket and "quantum" one takes place.
We define and study the renormalized volume for geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, including with rank-$1$ cusps. We prove a variation formula, and show that for certain families of convex co-compact hyperbolic metrics $g_\eps$ degenerating to a geometrically finite hyperbolic metric $g_0$ with rank-$1$ cusps, the renormalized volume converges to the renormalized volume of the limiting metric.
In this note we show the following result using the integral-geometric formula of R. Howard: Consider the totally geodesic $\mathbb{R}P^{2m}$ in $\mathbb{C}P^n$. Then it minimizes volume among the isotropic submanifolds in the same $\mathbb{Z}/2$ homology class in $\mathbb{C}P^n$ (but not among all submanifolds in this $\mathbb{Z}/2$ homology class). Also the totally geodesic $\mathbb{R}P^{2m-1}$ minimizes volume in its Hamiltonian deformation class in $\mathbb{C}P^n$. As a corollary we'll give estimates for volumes of Lagrangian submanifolds in complete intersections in $\mathbb{C}P^n$.
