H. Hotelling proved that in the n-dimensional Euclidean or spherical space, the volume of a tube of small radius about a curve depends only on the length of the curve and the radius. A. Gray and L. Vanhecke extended Hotelling's theorem to rank one symmetric spaces computing the volumes of the tubes explicitly in these spaces. In the present paper, we generalize these results by showing that every harmonic manifold has the above tube property. We compute the volume of tubes in the Damek-Ricci spaces. We show that if a Riemannian manifold has the tube property, then it is a 2-stein D'Atri space. We also prove that a symmetric space has the tube property if and only if it is harmonic. Our results answer some questions posed by L. Vanhecke, T. J. Willmore, and G. Thorbergsson.
The authors showed in a preceding paper that in a connected locally harmonic manifold, the volume of a tube of small radius about a regularly parameterized simple arc depends only on the length of the arc and the radius. In this paper, we show that this property characterizes harmonic manifolds even if it is assumed only for tubes about geodesic segments. As a consequence, we obtain similar characterizations of harmonic manifolds in terms of the total mean curvature and the total scalar curvature of tubular hypersurfaces about curves. We find simple formulae expressing the volume, total mean c…
In this paper, we investigate the volume-prserving mean curvature flow starting from a tube (of nonconstant radius) over a compact closed domain of a reflective submanifold in a symmetric space. We prove that the tubeness is preserved along the flow under certain conditions.
We generalize an inequality of E. Heintze and H. Karcher [8] for the volume of tubes around minimal submanifolds to an inequality based on integral bounds for $k$-Ricci curvature. Even in the case of a pointwise bound, this generalizes the classical inequality by replacing a sectional curvature bound with a $k$-Ricci bound. This work is motivated by the estimates of Petersen-Shteingold-Wei for the volume of tubes around a geodesic [12] and generalizes their result. Using similar ideas we also prove a Hessian comparison theorem for $k$-Ricci curvature which generalizes the usual Hessian and Lap…
First we investigate the evolutions of the radius function and its gradient along the volume-preserving mean curvature flow starting from a tube (of nonconstant radius) over a compact closed domain of a reflective submanifold in a symmetric space under certain condition for the radius function. Next, we prove that the tubeness is preserved along the flow in the case where the ambient space is a rank one symmetric space of non-compact type (other than a (real) hyperbolic space) and the reflective submanifold is an invariant submanifold and the radius function of the initial tube is radial. Furt…
A formula of the renormalized volume of tubes over polalized Kähler-Einstein manifolds is given in terms of the Einstein constant and the volume of the polarization.
In 1939 Weyl showed that the volume of spherical tubes around compact submanifolds M of Euclidean space depends solely on the induced Riemannian metric on M. Can this intrinsic nature of the tube volume be preserved for tubes with more general cross sections D than the round ball? Under sufficiently strong symmetry conditions on D the answer turns out to be yes.
B. Csikós and M. Horváth proved that if a connected Riemannian manifold of dimension at least $4$ is harmonic, then the total scalar curvatures of tubes of small radius about a regular curve depend only on the length of the curve and the radius of the tube, and conversely, if the latter condition holds for cylinders, i.e., for tubes about geodesic segments, then the manifold is harmonic. In the present paper, we show that in contrast to the higher dimensional case, a connected 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold has the above mentioned property of tubes if and only if the manifold is a D'Atri sp…
We show the asymptotics of the volume density function in the class of central harmonic manifolds can be specified arbitrarily and do not determine the geometry.
In this paper, we present a new explicit formula for the curvatures of a regular curve with an arbitrary parameter in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$, expressed only in terms of its derivatives. We introduce also the notion of tube with arbitrary cross sections around a curve for which we calculate the volume and give a generalization for the second theorem of Pappus. The first theorem of Pappus is obtained for sphere tubes in arbitrary dimension.
Lower bounds on Ricci curvature limit the volumes of sets and the existence of harmonic functions on Riemannian manifolds. In 1975, Shing Tung Yau proved that a complete noncompact manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature has no nonconstant harmonic functions of sublinear growth. In the same paper, Yau used this result to prove that a complete noncompact manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature has at least linear volume growth. In this paper, we prove the following theorem concerning harmonic functions on these manifolds. Theorem: Let M be a complete noncompact manifold with nonnegative Ric…
One of the main aims of this article is to give the complete classification of critical metrics of the volume functional on a compact manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M$ and with harmonic Weyl tensor, which improves the corresponding classification for complete locally conformally flat case, due to Miao and Tam [18]. In particular, we prove that a critical metric with harmonic Weyl tensor on a simply connected compact manifold with boundary isometric to a standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ must be isometric to a geodesic ball in a simply connected space form $\Bbb{R}^n,$ $\Bbb{H}^n$ and $\…
We show that any closed spin manifold not diffeomorphic to the two-sphere admits a sequence of volume-one-Riemannian metrics for which the smallest non-zero Dirac eigenvalue tends to zero. As an application, we compare the Dirac spectrum with the conformal volume.
In this article we consider asymptotically harmonic manifolds which are simply connected complete Riemannian manifolds without conjugate points such that all horospheres have the same constant mean curvature $h$. We prove the following equivalences for asymptotically harmonic manifolds $X$ under the additional assumption that their curvature tensor together with its covariant derivative are uniformly bounded: (a) $X$ has rank one; (b) $X$ has Anosov geodesic flow; (c) $X$ is Gromov hyperbolic; (d) $X$ has purely exponential volume growth with volume entropy equals $h$. This generalizes earlier…
We use Busemann functions to construct volume preserving mappings in an asymptotically harmonic manifold. If the asymptotically harmonic manifold satisfies the visibility condition, we construct mappings which preserve distances in some directions. We also prove that some integrals on the intersection of horospheres are independent of the differences between the values of the corresponding Busemann functions and we establish an upper bound of the volume of the intersection of two horospheres which is independent of the difference between values of corresponding Busemann functions.
In this paper, we study volume growth, Liouville theorem and the local gradient estimate for $f$-harmonic functions, and volume comparison property of unit balls in complete noncompact gradient Ricci shrinkers. We also study integral properties of f-harmonic functions and harmonic functions on such manifolds.
We show that noncompact simply connected harmonic manifolds with volume density $Θ_{p}(r) =\sinh ^{n-1} r$ is isometric to the real hyperbolic space and noncompact simply connected Kähler harmonic manifold with volume density $Θ_{p}(r) =\sinh ^{2n-1} r \cosh r$ is isometric to the complex hyperbolic space. A similar result is also proved for Quaternionic Kähler manifolds. Using our methods we get an alternative proof, without appealing to the powerful Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem, of the fact that every Ricci flat harmonic manifold is isometric to the euclidean space. Finally a rigidity r…
We study asymptotically harmonic manifolds of negative curvature, without any cocompactness or homogeneity assumption. We show that asymptotic harmonicity provides a lot of information on the asymptotic geometry of these spaces: in particular, we determine the volume entropy, the spectrum and the relative densities of visual and harmonic measures on the ideal boundary. Then, we prove an asymptotic analogue of the classical mean value property of harmonic manifolds, and we characterize asymptotically harmonic manifolds, among Cartan-Hadamard spaces of strictly negative curvature, by the existen…
This paper gives an exposition of the authors' harmonic deformation theory for 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds. We discuss topological applications to hyperbolic Dehn surgery as well as recent applications to Kleinian group theory. A central idea is that local rigidity results (for deformations fixing cone angles) can be turned into effective control on the deformations that do exist. This leads to precise analytic and geometric versions of the idea that hyperbolic structures with short geodesics are close to hyperbolic structures with cusps. The paper also outlines a new harmonic defo…
In this paper we consider non-compact non-flat simply connected harmonic manifolds. In particular, we show that the Martin boundary and Busemann boundary coincide for such manifolds. For any finite volume quotient we show that (up to scaling) there is a unique Patterson-Sullivan measure and this measure coincides with the harmonic measure. As an application of these results we prove that the geodesic flow on a non-flat finite volume harmonic manifold without conjugate points is topologically transitive.
