Non-abelian quantum Hall states are characterized by the simultaneous appearance of charge and neutral gapless edge modes, with the structure of the latter being intricately related to the existence of bulk quasi-particle excitations obeying non-abelian statistics. In general, it is hard to probe the neutral modes in charge transport measurements and a thermal transport measurement seems to be inevitable. Here we propose a setup which can get around this problem by having two point contacts in series separated by a distance set by the thermal equilibration length of the charge mode. We show that by using the first point contact as a heating device, the excess charge noise measured at the second point contact carries a non-trivial signature of the presence of the neutral mode hence leading to its indirect detection. We also obtain explicit expressions for the thermal conductance and corresponding Lorentz number for transport across a quantum point contact between two edges held at different temperatures and chemical potentials.
We calculate the dominant excitations for the $k$-level ($k\in\mathbb{N}$) Read-Rezayi (RR) states and their particle-hole conjugates, the anti Read-Rezayi ($\bar{\textrm{RR}}$), proposed for quantum Hall states. These states are supposed to be build over the second Landau level with total filling factor $ν=2+ν^*$ with $ν^*=k/(k+2)$ for RR and $ν^*=2/(k+2)$ for $\bar{\textrm{RR}}$. In the $k$-level RR states, based on $\mathbb{Z}_k$ parafermions, the dominant excitations are the fundamental quasiparticles with fractional charge $e^*_k= e/(k + 2)$, with $e$ the electron charge, if $k=2,3$. For …
The k=3 Read-Rezayi (RR) parafermion quantum Hall state hosts non-Abelian excitations which provide a platform for the universal topological quantum computation. Although the RR state may be realized at the filling factor ν=12/5 in GaAs-based two-dimensional electron systems, the corresponding quantum Hall state is weak and at present nearly impossible to study experimentally. Here we argue that the RR state can alternatively be realized in a class of chiral materials with massless and massive Dirac-like band structure. This family of materials encompasses monolayer and bilayer graphene, as we…
The Read-Rezayi (RR) parafermion states form a series of exotic non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at filling $ν= k/(k+2)$. Computationally, the wave functions of these states are prohibitively expensive to generate for large systems. We introduce a series of parton states, denoted "$\bar{2}^{k}1^{k+1}$," and show that they lie in the same universality classes as the particle-hole-conjugate RR ("anti-RR") states. Our analytical results imply that a $(U(1)_{k+1} \times U(2k)_{-1})/(SU(k)_{-2} \times U(1)_{-1})$ coset conformal field theory describes the edge excitations of the $\b…
We discuss transport experiments for various non-Abelian quantum Hall states, including the Read-Rezayi series and a paired spin singlet state. We analyze the signatures of the unique characters of these states on Coulomb blockaded transport through large quantum dots. We show that the non-Abelian nature of the states manifests itself through modulations in the spacings between Coulomb blockade peaks as a function of the area of the dot. Even though the current flows only along the edge, these modulations vary with the number of quasiholes that are localized in the bulk of the dot. We discuss …
Degeneracy of non-abelian quantum Hall states on the torus: domain walls and conformal field theory
The search for non-Abelian quantum Hall states in the second Landau level is narrowed to the range of filling factors 7/3<ν_e<8/3. In this range, the analysis of energy spectra and correlation functions, calculated including finite width and Landau level mixing, supports the prominent non-Abelian candidates at ν_e=5/2 (Moore--Read) and 12/5 (Read--Rezayi). Outside of it, the four-flux noninteracting composite fermion model is validated. The borderline ν_e=7/3 state is adiabatically connected to the Laughlin liquid, but its short-range correlations and charge excitations are different.
In this paper, we study a method to obtain non-Abelian FQH state through double-layer FQH states and fractional exciton condensation. In particular, we find that starting with the (330) double-layer state and then increasing the interlayer tunneling strength, we may obtain a single-layer non-Abelian FQH state S(330). We show that the S(330) state is actually the Z_4 parafermion Read-Rezayi state. We also calculate the edge excitation of the S(330) state.
We provide a robust and generic method to assess the screening properties and extract the scaling exponents of quasiparticle edge excitations of quantum Hall states from model wavefunctions. We numerically implement this method for the fundamental quasihole and hole excitations of several model states. For the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Z_3-Read-Rezayi states, we find agreement with the predicted edge theory, verifying the bulk-edge correspondence. We also use this to obtain the first clear microscopic demonstration of the pathologies of the Gaffnian wavefunctions.
Supersymmetry (SUSY) is a symmetry transforming bosons to fermions and vice versa. Indications of its existence have been extensively sought after in high-energy experiments. However, signatures of SUSY have yet to be detected. In this manuscript we propose a condensed matter realization of SUSY on the edge of a Read-Rezayi quantum Hall state, given by filling factors of the form $ν=\frac{k}{k+2}$, where $k$ is an integer. As we show, this strongly interacting state exhibits an $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY. This allows us to use a topological invariant - the Witten index - defined specifically for sup…
Thermal conductance has emerged as a powerful probe of topological order in the quantum Hall effect and beyond. The interpretation of experiments crucially depends on the ratio of the sample size and the equilibration length, on which energy exchange among contra-propagating chiral modes becomes significant. We show that at low temperatures the equilibration length diverges as $1/T^2$ for almost all Abelian and non-Abelian topological orders. A faster $1/T^4$ divergence is present on the edges of the non-Abelian PH-Pfaffian and negative-flux Read-Rezayi liquids. We address experimental consequ…
Many bosonic (fermionic) fractional quantum Hall states, such as Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi wavefunctions, belong to a special class of orthogonal polynomials: the Jack polynomials (times a Vandermonde determinant). This fundamental observation allows to point out two different recurrence relations for the coefficients of the permanent (Slater) decomposition of the bosonic (fermionic) states. Here we provide an explicit Fock space representation for these wavefunctions by introducing a two-body squeezing operator which represents them as a Jastrow operator applied to reference states…
It is an important open problem to understand the landscape of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall phases which can be obtained starting from physically motivated theories of Abelian composite particles. We show that progress on this problem can be made using recently proposed non-Abelian bosonization dualities in 2+1 dimensions, which morally relate $U(N)_k$ and $SU(k)_{-N}$ Chern-Simons-matter theories. The advantage of these dualities is that regions of the phase diagram which may be obscure on one side of the duality can be accessed by condensing local operators on the other side. Starting…
We analyze transitions between quantum Hall ground states at prominent filling factors $ν$ in the spherical geometry by tuning the width parameter of the Zhang-Das Sarma interaction potential. We find that incompressible ground states evolve adiabatically under this tuning, whereas the compressible ones are driven through a first order phase transition. Overlap calculations show that the resulting phase is increasingly well described by appropriate analytic model wavefunctions (Laughlin, Moore-Read, Read-Rezayi). This scenario is shared by both odd ($ν=1/3, 1/5, 3/5, 7/3, 11/5, 13/5$) and even…
Partition functions of edge excitations are obtained for non-Abelian Hall states in the second Landau level, such as the anti-Read-Rezayi state, the Bonderson-Slingerland hierarchy and the Wen non-Abelian fluid, as well as for the non-Abelian spin-singlet state. The derivation is straightforward and unique starting from the non-Abelian conformal field theory data and solving the modular invariance conditions. The partition functions provide a complete account of the excitation spectrum and are used to describe experiments of Coulomb blockade and thermopower.
We study the edge-mode excitations of a fractional quantum Hall droplet by expressing the edge state wavefunctions as linear combinations of Jack polynomials with a negative parameter. We show that the exact diagonalization within subspace of Jack polynomials can be used to generate the chiral edge-mode excitation spectrum in the Laughlin phase and the Moore-Read phase with realistic Coulomb interaction. The truncation technique for the edge excitations simplifies the procedure to extract reliably the edge-mode velocities, which avoids the otherwise complicated analysis of the full spectrum th…
The projective construction is a powerful approach to deriving the bulk and edge field theories of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states and yields an understanding of non-Abelian FQH states in terms of the simpler integer quantum Hall states. Here we show how to apply the projective construction to the Z_k parafermion (Laughlin/Moore-Read/Read-Rezayi) FQH states, which occur at filling fraction ν= k/(kM+2). This allows us to derive the bulk low energy effective field theory for these topological phases, which is found to be a Chern-Simons theory at level 1 with a U(M) \times Sp(2k)…
A theory is developed for the paired even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level. We show that electrons bind to quantized vortices to form composite fermions, interacting through an exact instantaneous interaction that favors chiral p-wave pairing. Two canonically dual pairing gap functions are related by the bosonic Laughlin wavefunction (Jastraw factor) due to the correlation holes. We find that the ground state is the Moore-Read pfaffian in the long wavelength limit for weak Coulomb interactions, a new pfaffian of an oscillatory pairing function for intermedi…
We fabricated linear arrangements of multiple splitgate devices along an SOI mesa, thus forming a 2xN array of individually controllable Si quantum dots (QDs) with nearest neighbor coupling. We implemented two different gate reflectometry-based readout schemes to either probe spindependent charge movements by a coupled electrometer with single-shot precision, or directly sense a spin-dependent quantum capacitance. These results bear significance for fast, high-fidelity single-shot readout of large arrays of foundrycompatible Si MOS spin qubits.
We use exact numerical diagonalization in the search of fractional quantum Hall states with non-Abelian quasiparticle statistics. For the (most promising) states in a partially filled second Landau level, the search is narrowed to the range of filling factors $7/3 <ν_e<8/3$. In this range, the analysis of energy spectra and correlation functions, calculated including finite width and Landau level mixing, supports the prominent non-Abelian candidates at $ν_e=5/2$ (paired Moore--Read "pfafian" state) and 12/5 (clustered Read--Rezayi "parafermion" state). Outside of this range, the noninteracting…
We demonstrate all optical electron spin initialization, storage and readout in a single self-assembled InGaAs quantum dot. Using a single dot charge storage device we monitor the relaxation of a single electron over long timescales exceeding 40μs. The selective generation of a single electron in the quantum dot is performed by resonant optical excitation and subsequent partial exciton ionization; the hole is removed from the quantum dot whilst the electron remains stored. When subject to a magnetic field applied in Faraday geometry, we show how the spin of the electron can be prepared with a …
Chiral partition functions of conformal field theory describe the edge excitations of isolated Hall droplets. They are characterized by an index specifying the quasiparticle sector and transform among themselves by a finite-dimensional representation of the modular group. The partition functions are derived and used to describe electron transitions leading to Coulomb blockade conductance peaks. We find the peak patterns for Abelian hierarchical states and non-Abelian Read-Rezayi states, and compare them. Experimental observation of these features can check the qualitative properties of the con…
Using the modular invariance of the torus, constraints on the 1D patterns are derived that are associated with various fractional quantum Hall ground states, e.g. through the thin torus limit. In the simplest case, these constraints enforce the well known odd-denominator rule, which is seen to be a necessary property of all 1D patterns associated to quantum Hall states with minimum torus degeneracy. However, the same constraints also have implications for the non-Abelian states possible within this framework. In simple cases, including the $ν=1$ Moore-Read state and the $ν=3/2$ level 3 Read-Re…
The neutral fermionic edge mode is essential to the non-Abelian topological property and its experimental detection in $Z_k$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state for $k > 1$. Usually, the identification of the edge modes in a finite size system is difficult, especially near the region of the edge reconstruction, due to mixing with the bosonic edge mode and the bulk states as well. We study the edge-mode excitations of the Moore-Read (MR) and Read-Rezayi (RR) states by using Jack polynomials in the truncated subspace. It is found that the electron density, as a detector, has marked different beh…
Entanglement in topological phases of matter has so far been investigated through the perspective of their ground-state wave functions. In contrast, we demonstrate that the \emph{excitations} of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems also contain information to identify the system's topological order. Entanglement spectrum of the FQH quasihole (QH) excitations is shown to differentiate between the conformal field theory (CFT) sectors, based on the relative position of the QH with respect to the entanglement cut. For Read-Rezayi model states, as well as Coulomb interaction eigenstates, the count…
We find a series of possible continuous quantum phase transitions between fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at the same filling fraction in two-component quantum Hall systems. These can be driven by tuning the interlayer tunneling and/or interlayer repulsion. One side of the transition is the Halperin (p,p,p-3) Abelian two-component state while the other side is the non-Abelian Z4 parafermion (Read-Rezayi) state. We predict that the transition is a continuous transition in the 3D Ising class. The critical point is described by a Z2 gauged Ginzburg-Landau theory. These results have implicati…
Some fractional quantum Hall states observed in experiments may be described by first-quantized wavefunctions with special clustering properties like the Moore-Read Pfaffian for filling factor nu = 5/2. This wavefunction has been constructed by constructing correlation functions of a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) involving a free boson and a Majorana fermion. By considering other CFTs many other clustered states have been proposed as candidate FQH states under appropriate circumstances. It is believed that the underlying CFT should be unitary if one wants to describe an incompre…
The construction of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states from the two-dimensional array of quantum wires provides a useful way to control strong interactions in microscopic models and has been successfully applied to the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi states. We extend this construction to the Abelian and non-Abelian $SU(N-1)$-singlet FQH states at filling fraction $ν=k(N-1)/[N+k(N-1)m]$ labeled by integers $k$ and $m$, which are potentially realized in multi-component quantum Hall systems or $SU(N)$ spin systems. Utilizing the bosonization approach and conformal field theory (CFT), we …
We consider the bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect in the presence of a non-Abelian gauge field in addition to the usual Abelian magnetic field. The non-Abelian field breaks the twofold internal state degeneracy, but preserves the Landau level degeneracy. Using exact diagonalization, we find that for moderate non-Abelian field strengths the system's behaviour resembles a single internal state quantum Hall system, while for stronger fields there is a phase transition to either two internal state behaviour or the complete absence of fractional quantum Hall plateaus. Usually the energy gap is…
We formulate a theory of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states by considering an anisotropic system consisting of coupled, interacting one dimensional wires. We show that Abelian bosonization provides a simple framework for characterizing the Moore Read state, as well as the more general Read Rezayi sequence. This coupled wire construction provides a solvable Hamiltonian formulated in terms of electronic degrees of freedom, and provides a direct route to characterizing the quasiparticles and edge states in terms of conformal field theory. This construction leads to a simple interpretation…
We investigate, with the help of Monte-Carlo and exact-diagonalization calculations in the spherical geometry, several compressible and incompressible candidate wave functions for the recently observed quantum Hall state at the filling factor $ν=1/4$ in a wide quantum well. The quantum well is modeled as a two-component system by retaining its two lowest subbands. We make a direct connection with the phenomenological effective-bilayer model, which is commonly used in the description of a wide quantum well, and we compare our findings with the established results at $ν=1/2$ in the lowest Landau…
We further develop an approach to identify the braiding statistics associated to a given fractional quantum Hall state through adiabatic transport of quasiparticles. This approach is based on the notion of adiabatic continuity between quantum Hall states on the torus and simple product states---or "patterns"---in the thin torus limit, together with a suitable coherent state Ansatz for localized quasiholes that respects the modular invariance of the torus. We give a refined and unified account of the application of this method to the Laughlin and Moore-Read states, which may serve as a pedagogi…
Understanding the physical significance and probing the global invariants characterizing quantum topological phases in extended systems is a main challenge in modern physics with major impact in different areas of science. Here, a quantum-information-inspired probing method is proposed where topological phase transitions are revealed by a non-Markovianity quantifier. The idea is illustrated by considering the decoherence dynamics of an external read-out qubit that probes a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain with either pure dephasing or dissipative coupling. Qubit decoherence features and non-Ma…
