We consider a quantum dot in the regime of the quantum Hall effect, particularly in Laughlin states and non-Abelian Read-Rezayi states. We find the location of the Coulomb blockade peaks in the conductance as a function of the area of the dot and the magnetic field. When the magnetic field is fixed and the area of the dot is varied, the peaks are equally spaced for the Laughlin states. In contrast, non-Abelian statistics is reflected in modulations of the spacing which depend on the magnetic field.
Read-Rezayi fractional quantum Hall states are among the prime candidates for realizing non-Abelian anyons which in principle can be used for topological quantum computation. We present a prescription for efficiently finding braids which can be used to carry out a universal set of quantum gates on encoded qubits based on anyons of the Read-Rezayi states with $k>2$, $k\neq4$. This work extends previous results which only applied to the case $k = 3$ (Fibonacci) and clarifies why in that case gate constructions are simpler than for a generic Read-Rezayi state.
We calculate the dominant excitations for the $k$-level ($k\in\mathbb{N}$) Read-Rezayi (RR) states and their particle-hole conjugates, the anti Read-Rezayi ($\bar{\textrm{RR}}$), proposed for quantum Hall states. These states are supposed to be build over the second Landau level with total filling factor $ν=2+ν^*$ with $ν^*=k/(k+2)$ for RR and $ν^*=2/(k+2)$ for $\bar{\textrm{RR}}$. In the $k$-level RR states, based on $\mathbb{Z}_k$ parafermions, the dominant excitations are the fundamental quasiparticles with fractional charge $e^*_k= e/(k + 2)$, with $e$ the electron charge, if $k=2,3$. For …
We discuss transport experiments for various non-Abelian quantum Hall states, including the Read-Rezayi series and a paired spin singlet state. We analyze the signatures of the unique characters of these states on Coulomb blockaded transport through large quantum dots. We show that the non-Abelian nature of the states manifests itself through modulations in the spacings between Coulomb blockade peaks as a function of the area of the dot. Even though the current flows only along the edge, these modulations vary with the number of quasiholes that are localized in the bulk of the dot. We discuss …
We compute the dependence of the tunneling current in a double point contact in the k=3 Read-Rezayi state (which is conjectured to describe an incompressible quantum hall fluid at filling fraction nu=12/5) on voltage, separation between the two contacts, and temperature. Using the tunneling hamiltonian of cond-mat/0607431, we show that the effect of quasiholes in the bulk region between the two contacts is simply an overall constant multiplying the interference term. This is the same effect as found for the differential conductivity in cond-mat/0601242; the difference is that we do an actual e…
Non-abelian quantum Hall states are characterized by the simultaneous appearance of charge and neutral gapless edge modes, with the structure of the latter being intricately related to the existence of bulk quasi-particle excitations obeying non-abelian statistics. In general, it is hard to probe the neutral modes in charge transport measurements and a thermal transport measurement seems to be inevitable. Here we propose a setup which can get around this problem by having two point contacts in series separated by a distance set by the thermal equilibration length of the charge mode. We show th…
The k=3 Read-Rezayi (RR) parafermion quantum Hall state hosts non-Abelian excitations which provide a platform for the universal topological quantum computation. Although the RR state may be realized at the filling factor ν=12/5 in GaAs-based two-dimensional electron systems, the corresponding quantum Hall state is weak and at present nearly impossible to study experimentally. Here we argue that the RR state can alternatively be realized in a class of chiral materials with massless and massive Dirac-like band structure. This family of materials encompasses monolayer and bilayer graphene, as we…
The Read-Rezayi (RR) parafermion states form a series of exotic non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at filling $ν= k/(k+2)$. Computationally, the wave functions of these states are prohibitively expensive to generate for large systems. We introduce a series of parton states, denoted "$\bar{2}^{k}1^{k+1}$," and show that they lie in the same universality classes as the particle-hole-conjugate RR ("anti-RR") states. Our analytical results imply that a $(U(1)_{k+1} \times U(2k)_{-1})/(SU(k)_{-2} \times U(1)_{-1})$ coset conformal field theory describes the edge excitations of the $\b…
We study the groundstates of weakly interacting atomic Bose gases under conditions of rapid rotation. We present the results of large-scale exact diagonalisation studies on a periodic geometry (a torus) which allows studies of compressible states with broken translational symmetry. Focusing on filling factor $ν=2$, we show a competition between the triangular vortex lattice, a quantum smectic state, and the incompressible $k=4$ Read-Rezayi state. We discuss the corrections arising from finite size effects, and the likely behaviour for large system sizes. The Read-Rezayi state is stabilised by …
We demonstrate experimentally a precise realization of Coulomb Blockade Thermometry (CBT) working at temperatures up to 60 K. Advances in nano fabrication methods using electron beam lithography allow us to fabricate a uniform arrays of sufficiently small tunnel junctions to guarantee an overall temperature reading uncertainty of about 1\%
Certain well known quantum Hall states -- including the Laughlin states, the Moore-Read Pfaffian, and the Read-Rezayi Parafermion states -- can be defined as the unique lowest degree symmetric analytic function that vanishes as at least p powers as some number (g+1) of particles approach the same point. Analogously, these same quantum Hall states can be generated as the exact highest density zero energy state of simple angular momentum projection operators. Following this theme we determine the highest density zero energy state for many other values of p and g.
Partition functions of edge excitations are obtained for non-Abelian Hall states in the second Landau level, such as the anti-Read-Rezayi state, the Bonderson-Slingerland hierarchy and the Wen non-Abelian fluid, as well as for the non-Abelian spin-singlet state. The derivation is straightforward and unique starting from the non-Abelian conformal field theory data and solving the modular invariance conditions. The partition functions provide a complete account of the excitation spectrum and are used to describe experiments of Coulomb blockade and thermopower.
The driven-damped Jaynes-Cummings model in the regime of strong coupling is found to exhibit a coexistence between the quantum photon blockaded state and a quasi-coherent bright state. We characterize the slow time scales and the basin of attraction of these metastable states using full quantum simulations. This form of bistability can be useful for implementing a qubit readout scheme that does not require additional circuit elements. We propose a coherent control sequence that makes use of a simple linear chirp of drive amplitude and frequency as well as qubit frequency. By optimizing the par…
We consider a quaternately generalized Pfaffian QGPf$(\frac{1}{J(z_i,z_j,z_k,z_l)})[J(z_1,...,z_N)]^2$ in which the square of Vandermonde determinant, $[J(z_1,...,z_N)]^2$, implies the upmost Landau level is half filled. This wave function is the unique highest density zero energy state of a special short range interacting Hamiltonian. One can think this quaternate composite fermion liquid as a competing ground state of Moore-Read (MR) Pfaffian state at $ν=5/2$. The degeneracy of the quasihole excitations above the QGPf is higher than that of Moore-Read even Read-Rezayi quasiholes. The QGPf is…
Spins in gate-defined silicon quantum dots are promising candidates for implementing large-scale quantum computing. To read the spin state of these qubits, the mechanism that has provided the highest fidelity is spin-to-charge conversion via singlet-triplet spin blockade, which can be detected in-situ using gate-based dispersive sensing. In systems with a complex energy spectrum, like silicon quantum dots, accurately identifying when singlet-triplet blockade occurs is hence of major importance for scalable qubit readout. In this work, we present a description of spin blockade physics in a tunn…
We present a theoretical study of the spin-valley blockade transport effect in a double quantum dot defined in a straight carbon nanotube. We find that intervalley scattering due to short-range impurities completely lifts the spin-valley blockade and induces a large leakage current in a certain confined range of the external magnetic field vector. This current hot spot emerges due to different effective magnetic fields acting on the spin-valley qubit states of the two quantum dots. Our predictions are compared to a recent measurement [F. Pei et al., Nat. Nanotech. 7, 630 (2012)]. We discuss th…
Quantum computation relies on accurate measurements of qubits not only for reading the output of the calculation, but also to perform error correction. Most proposed scalable silicon architectures utilize Pauli blockade of triplet states for spin-to-charge conversion. In recent experiments, there have been instances when instead of conventional triplet blockade readout, Pauli blockade is sustained only between parallel spin configurations, with $|T_0\rangle$ relaxing quickly to the singlet state and leaving $|T_+\rangle$ and $|T_-\rangle$ states blockaded -- which we call \textit{parity readou…
Chiral partition functions of conformal field theory describe the edge excitations of isolated Hall droplets. They are characterized by an index specifying the quasiparticle sector and transform among themselves by a finite-dimensional representation of the modular group. The partition functions are derived and used to describe electron transitions leading to Coulomb blockade conductance peaks. We find the peak patterns for Abelian hierarchical states and non-Abelian Read-Rezayi states, and compare them. Experimental observation of these features can check the qualitative properties of the con…
We analyze the non-abelian Read-Rezayi quantum Hall states on the torus, where it is natural to employ a mapping of the many-body problem onto a one-dimensional lattice model. On the thin torus--the Tao-Thouless (TT) limit--the interacting many-body problem is exactly solvable. The Read-Rezayi states at filling $ν=\frac k {kM+2}$ are known to be exact ground states of a local repulsive $k+1$-body interaction, and in the TT limit this is manifested in that all states in the ground state manifold have exactly $k$ particles on any $kM+2$ consecutive sites. For $M\neq 0$ the two-body correlations …
The fractionally charged quasiparticles appearing in the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall plateau are predicted to have an extra non-local degree of freedom, known as topological charge. We show how this topological charge can block the tunnelling of these particles, and how such 'topological blockade' can be used to readout their topological charge. We argue that the short time scale required for this measurement is favorable for the detection of the non-Abelian anyonic statistics of the quasiparticles. We also show how topological blockade can be used to measure braiding statistics, and to couple…
The search for non-Abelian quantum Hall states in the second Landau level is narrowed to the range of filling factors 7/3<ν_e<8/3. In this range, the analysis of energy spectra and correlation functions, calculated including finite width and Landau level mixing, supports the prominent non-Abelian candidates at ν_e=5/2 (Moore--Read) and 12/5 (Read--Rezayi). Outside of it, the four-flux noninteracting composite fermion model is validated. The borderline ν_e=7/3 state is adiabatically connected to the Laughlin liquid, but its short-range correlations and charge excitations are different.
We present a model of a qubit built of a three coherently coupled quantum dots with three spins in a triangular geometry. The qubit states are encoded in the doublet subspace and they are controlled by a gate voltage, which breaks the triangular symmetry of the system. We show how to prepare the qubit and to perform one qubit operations. A new type of the current blockade effect will be discussed. The blockade is related with an asymmetry of transfer rates from the electrodes to different doublet states and is used to read-out of the dynamics of the qubit state. Our research also presents anal…
Silicon quantum dots are attractive candidates for the development of scalable, spin-based qubits. Pauli spin blockade in double quantum dots provides an efficient, temperature independent mechanism for qubit readout. Here we report on transport experiments in double gate nanowire transistors issued from a CMOS process on 300 mm silicon-on-insulator wafers. At low temperature the devices behave as two few-electron quantum dots in series. We observe signatures of Pauli spin blockade with a singlet-triplet splitting ranging from 0.3 to 1.3 meV. Magneto-transport measurements show that transition…
We report Pauli spin blockade in an impurity defined carbon nanotube double quantum dot. We observe a pronounced current suppression for negative source-drain bias voltages which is investigated for both symmetric and asymmetric coupling of the quantum dots to the leads. The measured differential conductance agrees well with a theoretical model of a double quantum dot system in the spin-blockade regime which allows us to estimate the occupation probabilities of the relevant singlet and triplet states. This work shows that effective spin-to-charge conversion in nanotube quantum dots is feasible…
Pauli blockade mechanisms -- whereby carrier transport through quantum dots is blocked due to selection rules even when energetically allowed -- are a direct manifestation of the Pauli exclusion principle, as well as a key mechanism for manipulating and reading out spin qubits. Pauli spin blockade is well established for systems such as GaAs QDs, but is to be further explored for systems with additional degrees of freedom, such as the valley quantum numbers in carbon-based materials or silicon. Here we report experiments on coupled bilayer graphene double quantum dots, in which the spin and va…
Manipulation and readout of spin qubits in quantum dots made in III-V materials successfully rely on Pauli blockade that forbids transitions between spin-triplet and spin-singlet states. Quantum dots in group IV materials have the advantage of avoiding decoherence from the hyperfine interaction by purifying them with only zero-spin nuclei. Complications of group IV materials arise from the valley degeneracies in the electronic bandstructure. These lead to complicated multiplet states even for two-electron quantum dots thereby significantly weakening the selection rules for Pauli blockade. Only…
We investigate quantum dots in semiconductor PbTe nanowire devices. Due to the accessibility of ambipolar transport in PbTe, quantum dots can be occupied both with electrons and holes. Owing to a very large dielectric constant in PbTe of order 1000, we do not observe Coulomb blockade which typically obfuscates the orbital and spin spectra. We extract large and highly anisotropic effective Lande g-factors, in the range 20-44. The absence of Coulomb blockade allows direct readout, at zero source-drain bias, of spin-orbit hybridization energies of up to 600 microelectronvolt. These spin propertie…
We address the problem of separating the short-distance, high-energy physics of cyclotron motion from the long- distance, low-energy physics within the Lowest Landau Level in field theoretic treatments of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. We illustrate our method for the case $ν=1/2$. By a sequence of field transformations we go from electrons to fermions that carry flux tubes of thickness $l_o$ (cyclotron radius) and couple to harmonic oscillators corresponding to magnetoplasmons. The fermions keep track of the low energy physics while the oscillators describe the Landau level, cyclotron cu…
Spin qubits based on interacting spins in double quantum dots have been successfully demonstrated. Readout of the qubit state involves a conversion of spin to charge information, universally achieved by taking advantage of a spin blockade phenomenon resulting from Pauli's exclusion principle. The archetypal spin blockade transport signature in double quantum dots takes the form of a rectified current. Currently more complex spin qubit circuits including triple quantum dots are being developed. Here we show both experimentally and theoretically (a) that in a linear triple quantum dot circuit, t…
In this paper, we study a method to obtain non-Abelian FQH state through double-layer FQH states and fractional exciton condensation. In particular, we find that starting with the (330) double-layer state and then increasing the interlayer tunneling strength, we may obtain a single-layer non-Abelian FQH state S(330). We show that the S(330) state is actually the Z_4 parafermion Read-Rezayi state. We also calculate the edge excitation of the S(330) state.
The successful test of non-Abelian statistics not only serves as a milestone in fundamental physics but also provides a quantum gate operation in topological quantum computation. An accurate and efficient readout scheme of a topological qubit is an essential step toward the experimental confirmation of non-Abelian statistics. In the current work, we propose a protocol to read out the quantum state of a Majorana vortex qubit on a topological superconductor island. The protocol consists of four Majorana zero modes trapped in spatially well-separated vortex cores on the two-dimensional surface of…
We present model wavefunctions for quasielectron (as opposed to quasihole) excitations of the unitary $Z_k$ parafermion sequence (Laughlin/Moore-Read/Read-Rezayi) of Fractional Quantum Hall states. We uniquely define these states through two generalized clustering conditions: they vanish when either a cluster of $k+2$ electrons is put together, or when two clusters of $k+1$ electrons are formed at different positions. For Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall states ($k=1$), our construction reproduces the Jain quasielectron wavefunction, and elucidates the difference between the Jain and Laughlin q…
Electric dipole spin resonance (EDSR) is a commonly used tool for manipulation and spectroscopy of quantum-dot-based spin qubits. When an EDSR experiment is embedded in a transport setup and Pauli spin blockade is used as means for spin-state read-out, then measured resonant responses in the leakage current indeed carry information about the level structure of the system under study. However, the actual line shape of these current resonances differs substantially from experiment to experiment, varying from being symmetric to asymmetric and from being a peak to a dip, a thorough understanding o…
We provide a robust and generic method to assess the screening properties and extract the scaling exponents of quasiparticle edge excitations of quantum Hall states from model wavefunctions. We numerically implement this method for the fundamental quasihole and hole excitations of several model states. For the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Z_3-Read-Rezayi states, we find agreement with the predicted edge theory, verifying the bulk-edge correspondence. We also use this to obtain the first clear microscopic demonstration of the pathologies of the Gaffnian wavefunctions.
The charge transport of a serially coupled quantum dots (SCQD) connected to the metallic electrodes is theoretically investigated in the Coulomb blockade regime. A closed-form expression for the tunneling current of SCQD in the {\color{red} weak interdot hopping} limit is obtained by solving an extended two-site Hubbard model via the Green's function method. We use this expression to investigate spin current rectification, negative differential conductance, and coherent tunneling in the nonlinear response regime. The current rectification arising from the space symmetry breaking of SCQD is sup…
The tunneling current and shot noise of the current between two Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) edges in the $ ν=12/5 $ FQH state in electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer are studied. It is shown that the tunneling current and shot noise can be used to probe the existence of $k=3 $ parafermion statistics in the $ ν=12/5 $ FQH state. More specifically, the dependence of the current on the Aharonov-Bohm flux in the Read-Rezayi state is asymmetric under the change of the sign of the applied voltage. This property is absent in the Abelian Laughlin states. Moreover the Fano factor can exceed 12.7 el…
We deduce a new set of symmetries and relations between the coefficients of the expansion of Abelian and Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) states in free (bosonic or fermionic) many-body states. Our rules allow to build an approximation of a FQH model state with an overlap increasing with growing system size (that may sometimes reach unity!) while using a fraction of the original Hilbert space. We prove these symmetries by deriving a previously unknown recursion formula for all the coefficients of the Slater expansion of the Laughlin, Read Rezayi and many other states (all Jacks multip…
Supersymmetry (SUSY) is a symmetry transforming bosons to fermions and vice versa. Indications of its existence have been extensively sought after in high-energy experiments. However, signatures of SUSY have yet to be detected. In this manuscript we propose a condensed matter realization of SUSY on the edge of a Read-Rezayi quantum Hall state, given by filling factors of the form $ν=\frac{k}{k+2}$, where $k$ is an integer. As we show, this strongly interacting state exhibits an $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY. This allows us to use a topological invariant - the Witten index - defined specifically for sup…
Thermal conductance has emerged as a powerful probe of topological order in the quantum Hall effect and beyond. The interpretation of experiments crucially depends on the ratio of the sample size and the equilibration length, on which energy exchange among contra-propagating chiral modes becomes significant. We show that at low temperatures the equilibration length diverges as $1/T^2$ for almost all Abelian and non-Abelian topological orders. A faster $1/T^4$ divergence is present on the edges of the non-Abelian PH-Pfaffian and negative-flux Read-Rezayi liquids. We address experimental consequ…
Pauli spin blockade in quantum dot systems occurs when the charge transport is allowed only for some spin states, and it has been an efficient tool in spin-based qubit devices in semiconductors. We theoretically investigate a Pauli spin blockade in a triple quantum dot molecule consisting of three identical quantum dots in a semiconductor in the presence of an external magnetic field through the molecule. When the three-electron state is on resonance with two- or four-electron states, the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation and the Zeeman splitting lead to a periodic spin blockade effect. We focus on th…
We provide a simple way to obtain the fusion rules associated with elementary quasi-holes over quantum Hall wave functions, in terms of domain walls. The knowledge of the fusion rules is helpful in the identification of the underlying conformal field theory describing the wave functions. We obtain the fusion rules, and explicitly give a conformal field theory description, for a two-parameter family (k,r) of wave functions. These include the Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states when r=2. The `gaffnian' wave function is the prototypical example for r>2, in which case the conformal field t…
We propose a scheme for spin-based detection of the bending motion in suspended carbon-nanotubes, using the curvature-induced spin-orbit interaction. We show that the resulting effective spin-phonon coupling can be used to down-convert the high-frequency vibration-modulated spin-orbit field to spin-flip processes at a much lower frequency. This vibration-induced spin-resonance can be controlled with an axial magnetic field. We propose a Pauli spin blockade readout scheme and predict that the leakage current shows pronounced peaks as a function of the external magnetic field. Whereas the resona…
We propose and demonstrate complete spin state readout of a two-electron system in a double quantum dot probed by an electrometer. The protocol is based on repetitive single shot measurements using Pauli spin blockade and our ability to tune on fast timescales the detuning and the interdot tunnel coupling between the GHz and sub-Hz regime. A sequence of three distinct manipulations and measurements allows establishing if the spins are in S, Tzero, Tplus or Tminus state. This work points at a procedure to reduce the overhead for spin readout, an important challenge for scaling up spin qubit pla…
Significant insights into non-Abelian quantum Hall states were obtained from studying special multi-particle interaction Hamiltonians, whose unique ground states are the Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states for the case of spinless electrons. We generalize this approach to include the electronic spin-1/2 degree of freedom. We demonstrate that in the absence of Zeeman splitting the ground states of such Hamiltonians have large degeneracies and very rich spin structures. The spin structure of the ground states and low-energy excitations can be understood based on an emergent SU(3) symmetry for the …
Recent experimental observations of current blockades in 2-D material quantum-dot platforms have opened new avenues for spin and valley-qubit processing. Motivated by experimental results, we construct a model capturing the delicate interplay of Coulomb interactions, inter-dot tunneling, Zeeman splittings, and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in a double quantum dot structure to simulate the Pauli blockades. Analyzing the relevant Fock-subspaces of the generalized Hamiltonian, coupled with the density matrix master equation technique for transport across the setup, we identify the generic class o…
Many bosonic (fermionic) fractional quantum Hall states, such as Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi wavefunctions, belong to a special class of orthogonal polynomials: the Jack polynomials (times a Vandermonde determinant). This fundamental observation allows to point out two different recurrence relations for the coefficients of the permanent (Slater) decomposition of the bosonic (fermionic) states. Here we provide an explicit Fock space representation for these wavefunctions by introducing a two-body squeezing operator which represents them as a Jastrow operator applied to reference states…
We introduce the notion of `order-$k$ non-abelian exclusion statistics'. We derive the associated thermodynamic equations by employing the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz for specific non-diagonal scattering matrices. We make contact with results obtained by different methods and we point out connections with `fermionic sum formulas' for characters in a Conformal Field Theory. As an application, we derive thermodynamic distribution functions for quasi-holes over a class of non-abelian quantum Hall states recently proposed by Read and Rezayi.
It is an important open problem to understand the landscape of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall phases which can be obtained starting from physically motivated theories of Abelian composite particles. We show that progress on this problem can be made using recently proposed non-Abelian bosonization dualities in 2+1 dimensions, which morally relate $U(N)_k$ and $SU(k)_{-N}$ Chern-Simons-matter theories. The advantage of these dualities is that regions of the phase diagram which may be obscure on one side of the duality can be accessed by condensing local operators on the other side. Starting…
The degeneracy of energy levels in a quantum dot of Hall fluid, leading to conductance peaks, can be readily derived from the partition functions of conformal field theory. Their complete expressions can be found for Hall states with both Abelian and non-Abelian statistics, upon adapting known results for the annulus geometry. We analyze the Abelian states with hierarchical filling fractions, ν=m/(mp \pm 1), and find a non trivial pattern of conductance peaks. In particular, each one of them occurs with a characteristic multiplicity, that is due to the extended symmetry of the m-folded edge. E…
We analyze transitions between quantum Hall ground states at prominent filling factors $ν$ in the spherical geometry by tuning the width parameter of the Zhang-Das Sarma interaction potential. We find that incompressible ground states evolve adiabatically under this tuning, whereas the compressible ones are driven through a first order phase transition. Overlap calculations show that the resulting phase is increasingly well described by appropriate analytic model wavefunctions (Laughlin, Moore-Read, Read-Rezayi). This scenario is shared by both odd ($ν=1/3, 1/5, 3/5, 7/3, 11/5, 13/5$) and even…
We study the edge-mode excitations of a fractional quantum Hall droplet by expressing the edge state wavefunctions as linear combinations of Jack polynomials with a negative parameter. We show that the exact diagonalization within subspace of Jack polynomials can be used to generate the chiral edge-mode excitation spectrum in the Laughlin phase and the Moore-Read phase with realistic Coulomb interaction. The truncation technique for the edge excitations simplifies the procedure to extract reliably the edge-mode velocities, which avoids the otherwise complicated analysis of the full spectrum th…
