We analyze the non-abelian Read-Rezayi quantum Hall states on the torus, where it is natural to employ a mapping of the many-body problem onto a one-dimensional lattice model. On the thin torus--the Tao-Thouless (TT) limit--the interacting many-body problem is exactly solvable. The Read-Rezayi states at filling $ν=\frac k {kM+2}$ are known to be exact ground states of a local repulsive $k+1$-body interaction, and in the TT limit this is manifested in that all states in the ground state manifold have exactly $k$ particles on any $kM+2$ consecutive sites. For $M\neq 0$ the two-body correlations of these states also imply that there is no more than one particle on $M$ adjacent sites. The fractionally charged quasiparticles and quasiholes appear as domain walls between the ground states, and we show that the number of distinct domain wall patterns gives rise to the nontrivial degeneracies, required by the non-abelian statistics of these states. In the second part of the paper we consider the quasihole degeneracies from a conformal field theory (CFT) perspective, and show that the counting of the domain wall patterns maps one to one on the CFT counting via the fusion rules. Moreover we extend the CFT analysis to topologies of higher genus.
We present explicit expressions for a large set of hierarchy wave functions on the torus. Included are the Laughlin states, the states in the positive Jain series, and recently observed states at e.g. $ν= 4/11$. The techniques we use constitute a nontrivial extension of the conformal field theory methods developed earlier to construct the corresponding wave functions in disc geometry.
We propose a realization of a quantum Hall effect (QHE) in a second-order topological insulator (SOTI) in three dimensions (3D), which is mediated by hinge states on a torus surface. It results from the nontrivial interplay of the material structure, Zeeman effect, and the surface curvature. In contrast to the conventional 2D- and 3D-QHE, we show that the 3D-SOTI QHE is not affected by orbital effects of the applied magnetic field and exists in the presence of a Zeeman term only, induced e.g. by magnetic doping. To explain the 3D-SOTI QHE, we analyze the boundary charge for a 3D-SOTI and estab…
From the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect States on a torus with filling factor nu = 1/p, p odd, we found that for small values of nu such states describe triangular Wigner crystals which are stable configurations. Therefore, the insulator phase of the two-dimensional electron system can be described with the same wave function that the liquid phase, and the incompressible liquid freezes (or the Wigner crystal melts) without any quantum transition between states, thus the system phase changes by means of a direct transition. We found at least one stable configuration of a Wigner crystal with F =…
Charge carriers in the quantum Hall regime propagate via one-dimensional conducting channels that form along the edges of a two-dimensional electron gas. Controlling their transmission through a gate-tunable constriction, also called quantum point contact (QPC), is fundamental for many coherent transport experiments. However, in graphene, tailoring a QPC with electrostatic gates remains challenging due to the formation of p-n junctions below gate electrodes along which electron and hole edge channels co-propagate and mix, short-circuiting the constriction. Here we show that this electron-hole …
We study the band structure modulation and spin-Hall effect of a two-dimensional heavy-hole system with $k^3$-Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC), irradiated by linearly polarized light. We find that the band structure becomes anisotropic under the illumination by the light. Most remarkably, a pair of additional spin-degeneracy points (apart from $Γ$ point) emerge in the energy dispersion, the locations of which are solely determined by the strength of the amplitude of the incident light. If this degeneracy occurs around the Fermi level, the spin-Hall conductivity (SHC) exhibits a resonance. Awa…
Using transport measurements, we investigate multicomponent quantum Hall (QH) ferromagnetism in dual-gated rhombohedral trilayer graphene (r-TLG), in which the real spin, orbital pseudospin and layer pseudospins of the lowest Landau level form spontaneous ordering. We observe intermediate quantum Hall plateaus, indicating a complete lifting of the degeneracy of the zeroth Landau level (LL) in the hole-doped regime. In charge neutral r-TLG, the orbital degeneracy is broken first, and the layer degeneracy is broken last and only the in presence of an interlayer potential U. In the phase space of…
We find the finite-width, i.e., the layer thickness, of experimental quasi-two dimensional systems produces a physical environment sufficient to stabilize the Moore-Read Pfaffian state thought to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor $ν=5/2$. This conclusion is based on exact calculations performed in the spherical and torus geometries, studying wavefunction overlap and ground state degeneracy
Previously we have demonstrated that, on a torus, the abelian quantum hall liquid is adiabatically connected to a charge density wave as the smaller dimension of the torus is varied. In this work we extend this result to the non-abelian bosonic Hall state. The outcome of these works is the realization that the paradigms of quantum number fractionalization in one dimension (polyacetylene) and two dimensions (fractional quantum Hall effect) are in fact equivalent.
We study dynamics of electrons in a magnetic field using a network model with two channels per link with random mixing in a random intrachannel potential; the channels represent either two Landau levels or two spin states. We consider channel mixing as function of the energy separation of the two extended states and show that its effect changes from repulsion to attraction as the energy separation increases. For two Landau levels this leads to level floating at low magnetic fields while for Zeeman split spin states we predict level attraction at high magnetic fields, accounting for ESR data. W…
We consider an annular superconductor-insulator-superconductor Josephson-junction, with the insulator being a double layer of electron and holes at Abelian fractional quantum Hall states of identical fillings. When the two superconductors gap out the edge modes, the system has a topological ground state degeneracy in the thermodynamic limit akin to the fractional quantum Hall degeneracy on a torus. In the quasi-one-dimensional limit, where the width of the insulator becomes small, the ground state energies are split. We discuss several implications of the topological degeneracy that survive th…
We analyze the entanglement spectrum of Laughlin states on the torus and show that it is arranged in towers, each of which is generated by modes of two spatially separated chiral edges. This structure is present for all torus circumferences, which allows for a microscopic identification of the prominent features of the spectrum by perturbing around the thin torus limit.
Although the adiabatic heuristic argument of the fractional quantum Hall states has been successful, continuous modification of the flux/statistics of anyons is strictly prohibited due to algebraic constrains of the braid group on a torus. We have numerically shown that the adiabatic heuristic principle for anyons is still valid even though the Hamiltonians cannot be modified continuously. The Chern number of the ground state multiplet is the adiabatic invariant, while the number of the topological degeneracy behaves wildly. A generalized Streda formula is proposed that explains the degeneracy…
We study the energy spectrum and quantum Hall effects of the twisted double bilayer graphene in uniform magnetic field. We investigate two different arrangements, AB-AB and AB-BA, which differ in the relative orientation but have very similar band structures in the absence of a magnetic field. For each system, we calculate the energy spectrum and quantized Hall conductivities at each spectral gap by using a continuum Hamiltonian that satisfies the magneto-translation condition. We show that the Hofstadter butterfly spectra of AB-AB and AB-BA stackings differ significantly, even though their ze…
Following a previous work [Shen, Ma, Xie and Zhang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 256603 (2004)] on the resonant spin Hall effect, we present detailed calculations of the spin Hall conductance in two-dimensional quantum wells in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. The Rashba coupling, generated by spin-orbit interaction in wells lacking bulk inversion symmetry, introduces a degeneracy of Zeeman-split Landau levels at certain magnetic fields. This degeneracy, if occuring at the Fermi energy, will induce a resonance in the spin Hall conductance below a characteristic temperature of order of the Zeeman…
Using the modular invariance of the torus, constraints on the 1D patterns are derived that are associated with various fractional quantum Hall ground states, e.g. through the thin torus limit. In the simplest case, these constraints enforce the well known odd-denominator rule, which is seen to be a necessary property of all 1D patterns associated to quantum Hall states with minimum torus degeneracy. However, the same constraints also have implications for the non-Abelian states possible within this framework. In simple cases, including the $ν=1$ Moore-Read state and the $ν=3/2$ level 3 Read-Re…
The possibility of using quantum Hall systems for thermoelectric energy conversion is investigated. It is shown that the massive degeneracy and the metallicity of a partially-filled Landau level enable thermoelectric cooling and power generation with unprecedented efficiency at low temperature. The figure of merit is explicitly derived for a transverse thermoelectric device using the $ν=0$ quantum Hall state of Dirac materials at charge neutrality, where due to electron-hole symmetry electrical Hall effect vanishes but thermoelectric Hall effect peaks.
We present a simple approach to calculate the degeneracy and the structure of the ground states of non-abelian quantum Hall (QH) liquids on the torus. Our approach can be applied to any QH liquids (abelian or non-abelian) obtained from the parton construction. We explain our approach by studying a series of examples of increasing complexity. When the effective theory of a non-abelian QH liquid is a non-abelian Chern-Simons (CS) theory, our approach reproduces the well known results for the ground state degeneracy of the CS theory. However, our approach also apply to non-abelian QH liquids whos…
We analyze the Moore-Read Pfaffian state on a thin torus. The known six-fold degeneracy is realized by two inequivalent crystalline states with a four- and two-fold degeneracy respectively. The fundamental quasihole and quasiparticle excitations are domain walls between these vacua, and simple counting arguments give a Hilbert space of dimension $2^{n-1}$ for $2n-k$ holes and $k$ particles at fixed positions and assign each a charge $\pm e/4$. This generalizes the known properties of the hole excitations in the Pfaffian state as deduced using conformal field theory techniques. Numerical calcul…
The physics of the quantum Hall system becomes very simple when studied on a thin torus. Remarkably, however, the very rich structure still exists in this limit and there is a continuous route to the bulk system. Here we review recent progress in understanding various features of the quantum Hall system in terms of a simple one-dimensional model corresponding to the thin torus.
We derive an effective two-dimensional Hamiltonian to describe the low energy electronic excitations of a graphite bilayer, which correspond to chiral quasiparticles with a parabolic dispersion exhibiting Berry phase $2π$. Its high-magnetic-field Landau level spectrum consists of almost equidistant groups of four-fold degenerate states at finite energy and eight zero-energy states. This can be translated into the Hall conductivity dependence on carrier density, $σ_{xy}(N)$, which exhibits plateaus at integer values of $4e^{2}/h$ and has a ``double'' $8e^{2}/h$ step between the hole and electro…
We show that the recently discovered double-valley splitting of the low-lying Landau level(s) in the Quantum Hall Effect in graphene can be explained as perturbative orbital interaction of intra- and inter-valley microscopic orbital currents with a magnetic field. This effect is provided by the translational-non-invariant terms corresponding to graphene's crystallographic honeycomb symmetry but do not exist in the relativistic theory of massless Dirac Fermions in Quantum Electrodynamics. We discuss recent data in view of these results.
Bernal-stacked multilayer graphene is a versatile platform to explore quantum transport phenomena and interaction physics due to its exceptional tunability via electrostatic gating. For instance, upon applying a perpendicular electric field, its band structure exhibits several off-center Dirac points (so-called Dirac gullies) in each valley. Here, the formation of Dirac gullies and the interaction-induced breakdown of gully coherence is explored via magnetotransport measurements in high-quality Bernal-stacked (ABA) trilayer graphene. In the absence of a magnetic field, multiple Lifshitz transi…
We compute the entanglement entropy, in real space, of the ground state of the integer Quantum Hall states for three different domains embedded in the torus, the disk and the sphere. We establish the validity of the area law with a vanishing value of the topological entanglement entropy. The entropy per unit length of the perimeter depends on the filling fraction, but it is independent of the geometry.
We study the forces that act on a point flux carrying an integral number of flux units in quantum Hall fluids. Forces due to external fields, Lorentz and Magnus type forces, and the forces due to mutual interaction of point fluxes are considered. The forces are related to the adiabatic curvature associated with families of Landau Hamiltonians. The problem displays distinct features of the quantum Hall fluids with point fluxes on the plane and on the torus, which, however, agree at the thermodynamic limit.
We study the second quantized -or guiding center- description of the torus Laughlin state. Our main focus is the change of the guiding center degrees of freedom with the torus geometry, which we show to be generated by a two-body operator. We demonstrate that this operator can be used to evolve the full torus Laughlin state at given modular parameter τ from its simple (Slater-determinant) thin torus limit, thus giving rise to a new presentation of the torus Laughlin state in terms of its "root partition" and an exponential of a two-body operator. This operator therefore generates in particular…
We present measurements of quantized conductance in electrostatically induced quantum point contacts in bilayer graphene. The application of a perpendicular magnetic field leads to an intricate pattern of lifted and restored degeneracies with increasing field: at zero magnetic field the degeneracy of quantized one-dimensional subbands is four, because of a twofold spin and a twofold valley degeneracy. By switching on the magnetic field, the valley degeneracy is lifted. Due to the Berry curvature states from different valleys split linearly in magnetic field. In the quantum Hall regime fourfold…
We have investigated skyrmions in N-component quantum Hall systems. We find that SU(N) skyrmions are the lowest energy charged excitations for filling factors ν= 1,2,...,N-1 for small enough symmetry breaking terms. N>2 skyrmions can be realized in Si QH systems based on the (110) or (111) interfaces of Si, or perhaps in Si (100) systems, where the spin and valley isospin together provide an SU(4)-symmetry, or in multilayer QH systems. We also present Hartree-Fock results for a phenomenological easy-axis SU(2)-breaking model appropriate to valley degeneracy.
We report on the formation of critical states in disordered graphene, at the origin of variable and unconventional transport properties in the quantum Hall regime, such as a zero-energy Hall conductance plateau in the absence of an energy bandgap and Landau level degeneracy breaking. By using efficient real-space transport methodologies, we compute both the dissipative and Hall conductivities of large size graphene sheets with random distribution of model single and double vacancies. By analyzing the scaling of transport coefficients with defect density, system size and magnetic length, we elu…
We consider the bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect in the presence of a non-Abelian gauge field in addition to the usual Abelian magnetic field. The non-Abelian field breaks the twofold internal state degeneracy, but preserves the Landau level degeneracy. Using exact diagonalization, we find that for moderate non-Abelian field strengths the system's behaviour resembles a single internal state quantum Hall system, while for stronger fields there is a phase transition to either two internal state behaviour or the complete absence of fractional quantum Hall plateaus. Usually the energy gap is…
We propose a many-body generalization of the Z2 topological invariant for the quantum spin Hall insulator, which does not rely on single-particle band structures. The invariant is derived as a topological obstruction that distinguishes topologically distinct many-body ground states on a torus. It is also expressed as a Wilson-loop of the SU(2) Berry gauge field, which is quantized due to the time-reversal symmetry.
We study the thin torus limit of the Haldane-Rezayi state. Eight of the ten ground states are found to assume a simple product form in this limit, as is known to be the case for many other quantum Hall trial wave functions. The two remaining states have a somewhat unusual thin torus limit, where a "broken" pair of defects forming a singlet is completely delocalized. We derive these limits from the wave functions on the cylinder, and deduce the dominant matrix elements of the thin torus hollow-core Hamiltonians. We find that there are gapless excitations in the thin torus limit. This is in agre…
We consider the influence of an external periodic potential on the fractional quantum Hall effect of two-dimensional interacting electron systems. For many electrons on a torus, we find that the splitting of incompressible ground state degeneracies by a weak external potential diminishes as $\exp ( - L/ ξ)$ at large system size $L$. We present numerical results consistent with a scenario in which $ξ$ diverges at continuous phase transitions from fractional to integer quantum Hall states which occur with increasing external potential strength.
We consider spin-polarized electrons in a single Landau level on a torus. The quantum Hall problem is mapped onto a one-dimensional lattice model with lattice constant $2π/L_1$, where $L_1$ is a circumference of the torus (in units of the magnetic length). In the Tao-Thouless limit, $L_1\to 0$, the interacting many-electron problem is exactly diagonalized at any rational filling factor $ν=p/q\le 1$. For odd $q$, the ground state has the same qualitative properties as a bulk ($L_1 \to \infty$) quantum Hall hierarchy state and the lowest energy quasiparticle exitations have the same fractional c…
We construct the wave functions for the Moore-Read $ν= 5/2$ quantum Hall state on a torus in the presence of two quasiholes. These explicit wave functions allow us to compute the monodromy matrix that describes the effect of quasihole motion on the space of degenerate ground states. The result agrees with the recent discussion by Oshikawa {\it et al.} Our calculation provides a conformal field theory explanation of why certain transitions between ground states are forbidden. It is because taking a quasihole around a generator of the torus can change the fusion channel of the two quasiholes, an…
We present low temperature transport measurements on dual-gated suspended trilayer graphene in the quantum Hall (QH) regime. We observe QH plateaus at filling factors ν=-8, -2, 2, 6, and 10, in agreement with the full-parameter tight binding calculations. In high magnetic fields, odd-integer plateaus are also resolved, indicating almost complete lifting of the 12-fold degeneracy of the lowest Landau levels (LL). Under an out-of-plane electric field E, we observe degeneracy breaking and transitions between QH plateaus. Interestingly, depending on its direction, E selectively breaks the LL degen…
We theoretically discuss a momentum-space analog of the quantum Hall effect, which could be observed in topologically nontrivial lattice models subject to an external harmonic trapping potential. In our proposal, the Niu-Thouless-Wu formulation of the quantum Hall effect on a torus is realized in the toroidally shaped Brillouin zone. In this analogy, the position of the trap center in real space controls the magnetic fluxes that are inserted through the holes of the torus in momentum space. We illustrate the momentum-space quantum Hall effect with the noninteracting trapped Harper-Hofstadter m…
We present a new approach to obtaining the scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy in fractional quantum Hall states from finite-size wavefunctions. By employing the torus geometry and the fact that the torus aspect ratio can be readily varied, we can extract the entanglement entropy of a spatial block as a continuous function of the block boundary. This approach allows us to extract the topological entanglement entropy with an accuracy superior to what is possible on the spherical or disc geometry, where no natural continuously variable parameter is available. Other than the topological …
The transitions between neighbouring plateaux in the quantum Hall system are observed to follow anti-holomophic scaling with superuniversal scaling exponents, showing that the system contains an emergent sub-modular discrete symmetry and a holomorphic structure at low energies. We identify a class of effective scaling models consistent with this data, which is parametrized by the complex structure of a torus with a special spin structure, in which only the number of fermions (c) remains undetermined. For c = 2 this gives the superuniversal anti-holomorphic scaling potential previously inferred…
We study the quantum Hall plateau transition on rectangular tori. As the aspect ratio of the torus is increased, the two-dimensional critical behavior, characterized by a subthermodynamic number of topological states in a vanishing energy window around a critical energy, changes drastically. In the thin-torus limit, the entire spectrum is Anderson-localized; however, an extensive number of states retain a Chern number $C\neq 0$. We resolve this apparent paradox by mapping the thin-torus quantum Hall system onto a disordered Thouless pump, where the Chern number corresponds to the winding numbe…
Role of chiral symmetry in many-body states of graphene in strong magnetic fields is theoretically studied with the honeycomb lattice model. For a spin-split Landau level where the leading electron-electron interaction is the nearest-neighbor repulsion, a chiral condensate is shown to be, within the subspace of n = 0 Landau level, an exact many-body ground state with a finite gap, for which calculation of Chern numbers reveals that the ground state is a Hall insulator with a topological degeneracy of two. The topological nature of the ground state is shown to manifest itself as a Kekuléan bond…
By applying the idea of parafermionic clustering to composite bosons with positive as well as negative flux, a new series of trial wavefunctions to describe fractional quantum Hall states is proposed. These non-Abelian states compete at filling factors k/(3k +/- 2) with other ground states like stripes or composite fermion states. These two series contain all the states recently discovered by Pan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 016801 (2003)] including the even denominator cases. Exact diagonalization studies on the sphere and torus point to their possible relevance for filling factors 3/7, 3/11,…
Temperature dependence of the longitudinal and Hall resistance is studied in the regime of localization-delocalization transition. We carry out measurements of a scaling exponent $κ$ in the Landau level mixing region at several filling factors. The localization exponent $γ$ is extracted using an approach based on the variable range hopping theory. The values of $γ$ and $κ$ are found to be universal, independent of filling factor in our sample. We can conclude that although Landau level mixing can change the degeneracy of a quantum Hall state, the value of the scaling exponent remains the same …
The electronic structure of multilayer graphenes depends strongly on the number of layers as well as the stacking order. Here we explore the electronic transport of purely ABA-stacked trilayer graphenes in a dual-gated field-effect device configuration. We find that both the zero-magnetic-field transport and the quantum Hall effect at high magnetic fields are distinctly different from the monolayer and bilayer graphenes, and that they show electron-hole asymmetries that are strongly suggestive of a semimetallic band overlap. When the ABA trilayers are subjected to an electric field perpendicul…
We demonstrate the emergence of a topological ordered phase for non-Hermitian systems. Specifically, we elucidate that systems with non-Hermitian two-body interactions show a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state. The non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is considered to be relevant to cold atoms with dissipation. We conclude the emergence of the non-Hermitian FQH state by the presence of the topological degeneracy and by the many-body Chern number for the ground state multiplet showing $C_{\mathrm{tot}}=1$. The robust topological degeneracy against non-Hermiticity arises from the many-body translational s…
An adiabatic approach put forward by Greiter and Wilczek interpolates between the integer quantum Hall effects of electrons and composite fermions by varying the statistical flux bound to electrons continuously from zero to an even integer number of flux quanta, such that the intermediate states represent anyons in an external magnetic field with the same "effective" integer filling factor. We consider such anyons on a torus, and construct representative wave functions for their ground as well as excited states. These wave functions involve higher Landau levels in general, but can be explicitl…
We propose field theories for the bulk and edge of a quantum Hall state in the universality class of the Haldane-Rezayi wavefunction. The bulk theory is associated with the $c=-2$ conformal field theory. The topological properties of the state, such as the quasiparticle braiding statistics and ground state degeneracy on a torus, may be deduced from this conformal field theory. The 10-fold degeneracy on a torus is explained by the existence of a logarithmic operator in the $c=-2$ theory; this operator corresponds to a novel bulk excitation in the quantum Hall state. We argue that the edge theor…
A possible realization of Hall conductivity, quantized at odd integer factors of $e^2/h$ for graphene's honeycomb lattice is proposed. I argue that, in the presence of \emph{uniform} real and pseudo-magnetic fields, the valley degeneracy from the higher Landau levels can be removed. A pseudo-magnetic field may arise from bulging or stretching of the graphene flake. This may lead to observation of plateaus in the Hall conductivity at quantized values $f e^2/h$, with $f=\pm 3, \pm 5$ etc, which have not been observed in measurement of Hall conductivity. However, in a collection of noninteracting…
In condensed matter physics, the study of electronic states with SU(N) symmetry has attracted considerable and growing attention in recent years, as systems with such a symmetry can often have a spontaneous symmetry-breaking effect giving rise to a novel ground state. For example, pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet of broken SU(2) symmetry has been realized by bringing two Landau levels close to degeneracy in a bilayer quantum Hall system. In the past several years, the exploration of collective states in other multi-component quantum Hall systems has emerged. Here we show the conventional ps…
We derive semiclassical ground state solutions that correspond to the quantum Hall states earlier found in the Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix theory. They realize the Jain composite-fermion construction and their density is piecewise constant as that of phenomenological wave functions. These results support the matrix theory as a possible effective theory of the fractional Hall effect. A crucial role is played by the constraint limiting the degeneracy of matrix states: we find its explicit gauge invariant form and clarify its physical interpretation.
We show in this paper that thermopower is enhanced in non-Abelian quantum Hall liquids under appropriate conditions. This is because thermopower measures entropy per electron in the clean limit, while the degeneracy and entropy associated with non-Abelian quasiparticles enhance entropy when they are present. Thus thermopower can potentially probe non-Abelian nature of the quasiparticles, and measure their quantum dimension.
We investigate the quantum Hall effect in graphene. We argue that in graphene in presence of an external magnetic field there is dynamical generation of mass by a rearrangement of the Dirac sea. We show that the mechanism breaks the lattice valley degeneracy only for the $n=0$ Landau levels and leads to the new observed $ν= \pm 1$ quantum Hall plateaus. We suggest that our result can be tested by means of numerical simulations of planar Quantum Electro Dynamics with dynamical fermions in an external magnetic fields on the lattice.
We discuss anomalous fractional quantum Hall effect that exists without external magnetic field. We propose that excitations in such systems may be described effectively by non-interacting particles with the Hamiltonians defined on the Brillouin zone with a branch cut. Hall conductivity of such a system is expressed through the one-particle Green function. We demonstrate that for the Hamiltonians of the proposed type this expression takes fractional values times Klitzing constant. Possible relation of the proposed construction with degeneracy of ground state is discussed as well.
We investigate the emergence of long-range electron hopping mediated by cavity vacuum fields in disordered quantum Hall systems. We show that the counter-rotating (anti-resonant) light-matter interaction produces an effective hopping between disordered eigenstates within the last occupied Landau band. The process involves a number of intermediate states equal to the Landau degeneracy: each of these states consists of a virtual cavity photon and an electron excited in the next Landau band with the same spin. We study such a cavity-mediated hopping mechanism in the dual presence of a random diso…
Using exact diagonalization of bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor $ν_T=1$ in the torus geometry, we show that there is a new long-range interlayer phase coherence due to spontaneous pseudospin spiral order at interlayer distances larger than the critical value at which the pseudospin ferromagnetic order is destroyed. We emphasize the distinction between the interlayer phase coherence and the pseudospin ferromagnetic order.
