We find the finite-width, i.e., the layer thickness, of experimental quasi-two dimensional systems produces a physical environment sufficient to stabilize the Moore-Read Pfaffian state thought to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor $ν=5/2$. This conclusion is based on exact calculations performed in the spherical and torus geometries, studying wavefunction overlap and ground state degeneracy
We present two 2-body Hamiltonians that approximate the exact PH-Pfaffian wavefunction with their ground states for all the system sizes where this wavefunction has been numerically constructed to date. The approximate wavefunctions have high overlap with the original and reproduce well the low-lying entanglement spectrum and structure factor. The approximate generating Hamiltonians are obtained by an optimisation procedure where three to four pseudopotentials are varied in the neighbourhood of second Landau level Coulomb interaction or of a non-interacting model. They belong to a finite regio…
We construct a wavefunction, generalizing the well known Moore-Read Pfaffian, that describes spinless electrons at filling fraction nu=2/5 (or bosons at filling fraction nu=2/3) as the ground state of a very simple three body potential. We find, analogous to the Pfaffian, that when quasiholes are added there is a ground state degeneracy which can be identified as zero-modes of the quasiholes. The zero-modes are identified as having semionic statistics. We write this wavefunction as a correlator of the Virasoro minimal model conformal field theory M(5,3). Since this model is non-unitary, we con…
We study the non-Abelian statistics of quasiparticles in the Ising-type quantum Hall states which are likely candidates to explain the observed Hall conductivity plateaus in the second Landau level, most notably the one at filling fraction nu=5/2. We complete the program started in Nucl. Phys. B 506, 685 (1997) and show that the degenerate four-quasihole and six-quasihole wavefunctions of the Moore-Read Pfaffian state are orthogonal with equal constant norms in the basis given by conformal blocks in a c=1+1/2 conformal field theory. As a consequence, this proves that the non-Abelian statistics…
The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the second orbital Landau level at filling factor 5/2 remains enigmatic and motivates our work. We consider the effect of the quasi-2D nature of the experimental FQH system on a number of FQH states (fillings 1/3, 1/5, 1/2) in the lowest, second, and third Landau levels (LLL, SLL, TLL,) by calculating the overlap, as a function of quasi-2D layer thickness, between the exact ground state of a model Hamiltonian and the consensus variational wavefunctions (Laughlin wavefunction for 1/3 and 1/5 and the Moore-Read Pfaffian wavefunction for 1/2). Using la…
A theory is developed for the paired even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level. We show that electrons bind to quantized vortices to form composite fermions, interacting through an exact instantaneous interaction that favors chiral p-wave pairing. Two canonically dual pairing gap functions are related by the bosonic Laughlin wavefunction (Jastraw factor) due to the correlation holes. We find that the ground state is the Moore-Read pfaffian in the long wavelength limit for weak Coulomb interactions, a new pfaffian of an oscillatory pairing function for intermedi…
The Pfaffian quantum Hall states, which can be viewed as involving pairing either of spin-polarized electrons or of composite fermions, are generalized by finding the exact ground states of certain Hamiltonians with k+1-body interactions, for all integers k > 0. The remarkably simple wavefunctions of these states involve clusters of k particles, and are related to correlators of parafermion currents in two-dimensional conformal field theory. The k=2 case is the Pfaffian. For k > 1, the quasiparticle excitations of these systems are expected to possess nonabelian statistics, like those of the P…
We present an approach to the computation of the non-Abelian statistics of quasiholes in quantum Hall states, such as the Pfaffian state, whose wavefunctions are related to the conformal blocks of minimal model conformal field theories. We use the Coulomb gas construction of these conformal field theories to formulate a plasma analogy for the quantum Hall states. A number of properties of the Pfaffian state follow immediately, including the Berry phases which demonstrate the quasiholes' fractional charge, the abelian statistics of the two-quasihole state, and equal-time ground state correlatio…
We study a quantum point contact in the fractional quantum Hall regime at Landau level filling factors 1/3 and 5/2. By using exact diagonalizations in the cylinder geometry we identify the edge modes in the presence of a parabolic confining potential. By changing the sign of the potential we can access both the tunneling through the bulk of the fluid and the tunneling between spatially separated droplets. This geometry is realized in the quantum point contact geometry for two-dimensional electron gases. In the case of the model Moore-Read Pfaffian state at filling factor 5/2 we identify the co…

The competition between the Zeeman energy and the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings is studied for fractional quantum Hall states by including correlation effects. A transition of the direction of the spin-polarization is predicted at specific values of the Zeeman energy. We show that these values can be expressed in terms of the pair-correlation function, and thus provide information about the microscopic ground state. We examine the particular examples of the Laughlin wavefunctions and the 5/2-Pfaffian state. We also include effects of the nuclear bath.
We report the observation of developing fractional quantum Hall states at Landau level filling factors $ν= 1/2$ and 1/4 in electron systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells with significantly $asymmetric$ charge distributions. The very large electric subband separation and the highly asymmetric charge distribution at which we observe these quantum Hall states, together with the fact that they disappear when the charge distribution is made symmetric, suggest that these are one-component states, possibly described by the Moore-Read Pfaffian wavefunction.
Although numerical studies modeling the quantum hall effect at filling fraction $5/2$ predict either the Pfaffian (Pf) or its particle hole conjugate, the anti-Pfaffian (aPf) state, recent experiments appear to favor a quantized thermal hall conductivity with quantum number $K=5/2$ , rather than the value $K=7/2$ or $K=3/2$ expected for the Pf or aPF state, respectively. While a particle hole symmetric topological order (the PH-Pfaffian) would be consistent with the experiments, this state is believed to be energetically unfavorable in a homogenous system. Here we study the effects of disorder…
We discuss the composite fermion pairing state in bilayer quantum Hall systems. After the evaluation of the range of the inter-layer separation in which the quantum Hall state is stabilized, we discuss the effect of inter-layer tunneling on the composite fermion pairing state at ν=1/2. We show that there is a cusp at the transition point between the Halperin (3,3,1) state and the Pfaffian state.
Some fractional quantum Hall states observed in experiments may be described by first-quantized wavefunctions with special clustering properties like the Moore-Read Pfaffian for filling factor nu = 5/2. This wavefunction has been constructed by constructing correlation functions of a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) involving a free boson and a Majorana fermion. By considering other CFTs many other clustered states have been proposed as candidate FQH states under appropriate circumstances. It is believed that the underlying CFT should be unitary if one wants to describe an incompre…
We analyze transitions between quantum Hall ground states at prominent filling factors $ν$ in the spherical geometry by tuning the width parameter of the Zhang-Das Sarma interaction potential. We find that incompressible ground states evolve adiabatically under this tuning, whereas the compressible ones are driven through a first order phase transition. Overlap calculations show that the resulting phase is increasingly well described by appropriate analytic model wavefunctions (Laughlin, Moore-Read, Read-Rezayi). This scenario is shared by both odd ($ν=1/3, 1/5, 3/5, 7/3, 11/5, 13/5$) and even…
We study interacting bosons on a lattice in a magnetic field. When the number of flux quanta per plaquette is close to a rational fraction, the low energy physics is mapped to a multi-species continuum model: bosons in the lowest Landau level where each boson is given an internal degree of freedom, or pseudospin. We find that the interaction potential between the bosons involves terms that do not conserve pseudospin, corresponding to umklapp processes, which in some cases can also be seen as BCS-type pairing terms. We argue that in experimentally realistic regimes for bosonic atoms in optical …
Using a tilted field geometry, the effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the even denominator nu = 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state is studied. The energy gap of the nu = 5/2 state is found to collapse linearly with the in-plane magnetic field above ~0.5 T. In contrast, a strong enhancement of the gap is observed for the nu = 7/3 state. The radically distinct tilted-field behaviour between the two states is discussed in terms of Zeeman and magneto-orbital coupling within the context of the proposed Moore-Read pfaffian wavefunction for the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect.
It is known that a subset of fractional quantum Hall wave functions has been expressed as conformal field theory (CFT) correlators, notably the Laughlin wave function at filling factor $ν=1/m$ ($m$ odd) and its quasiholes, and the Pfaffian wave function at $ν=1/2$ and its quasiholes. We develop a general scheme for constructing composite-fermion (CF) wave functions from conformal field theory. Quasiparticles at $ν=1/m$ are created by inserting anyonic vertex operators, $P_{\frac{1}{m}}(z)$, that replace a subset of the electron operators in the correlator. The one-quasiparticle wave function i…
We analyze a recently proposed method to create fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states of atoms confined in optical lattices [A. Sørensen {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 94} 086803 (2005)]. Extending the previous work, we investigate conditions under which the FQH effect can be achieved for bosons on a lattice with an effective magnetic field and finite onsite interaction. Furthermore, we characterize the ground state in such systems by calculating Chern numbers which can provide direct signatures of topological order and explore regimes where the characterization in terms of wavefunction ov…
We analyze pairing of fermions in two dimensions for fully-gapped cases with broken parity (P) and time-reversal (T), especially cases in which the gap function is an orbital angular momentum ($l$) eigenstate, in particular $l=-1$ (p-wave, spinless or spin-triplet) and $l=-2$ (d-wave, spin-singlet). For $l\neq0$, these fall into two phases, weak and strong pairing, which may be distinguished topologically. In the cases with conserved spin, we derive explicitly the Hall conductivity for spin as the corresponding topological invariant. For the spinless p-wave case, the weak-pairing phase has a p…
