We provide a simple way to obtain the fusion rules associated with elementary quasi-holes over quantum Hall wave functions, in terms of domain walls. The knowledge of the fusion rules is helpful in the identification of the underlying conformal field theory describing the wave functions. We obtain the fusion rules, and explicitly give a conformal field theory description, for a two-parameter family (k,r) of wave functions. These include the Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states when r=2. The `gaffnian' wave function is the prototypical example for r>2, in which case the conformal field theory is non-unitary.
We theoretically study the current-driven domain wall motion in the presence of both the spin Hall effect and an extrinsic pinning potential. The spin Hall effect mainly affects the damping ratio of the domain wall precession in the pinning potential. When the pinning potential is not too strong, this results in a significant reduction of a threshold current density for the depinning of a domain wall with certain polarity. We also propose one way to distinguish the spin Hall effect induced spin-transfer torque from the one induced by the Rashba spin-orbit coupling experimentally.
In this paper, a series of $ν=2/5$ fractional quantum Hall wave functions are constructed from conformal field theory(CFT). They share the same topological properties with states constructed by Jain's composite fermion approach. Upon exact lowest Landau level(LLL) projection, some of Jain composite fermion states would not survive if constraints on Landau level indices given in the appendices of this paper were not satisfied. By contrast, states constructed from CFT always stay in LLL. These states are characterized by different topological shifts and multibody relative angular momenta. As a b…
We consider the zero-filled quantum-Hall ferromagnetic state of bilayer graphene subject to a kink-like perpendicular electric field, which generates domain walls in the electronic state and low-energy collective modes confined to move along them. In particular, it is shown that two pairs of collective helical modes are formed at opposite sides of the kink, each pair consisting of modes with identical helicities. We derive an effective field-theoretical model of these modes in terms of two weakly coupled anisotropic quantum spin-ladders, with parameters tunable through control of the electric …
We analyze the Moore-Read Pfaffian state on a thin torus. The known six-fold degeneracy is realized by two inequivalent crystalline states with a four- and two-fold degeneracy respectively. The fundamental quasihole and quasiparticle excitations are domain walls between these vacua, and simple counting arguments give a Hilbert space of dimension $2^{n-1}$ for $2n-k$ holes and $k$ particles at fixed positions and assign each a charge $\pm e/4$. This generalizes the known properties of the hole excitations in the Pfaffian state as deduced using conformal field theory techniques. Numerical calcul…
We study the the interplay between spontaneously broken valley symmetry and spatial disorder in multivalley semiconductors in the quantum Hall regime. In cases where valleys have anisotropic electron dispersion a previous long-wavelength analysis [Phys. Rev. B 82, 035428 (2010)] identified two new phases exhibiting the QHE. The first is the quantum Hall Ising nematic (QHIN), a phase with long-range orientational order manifested in macroscopic transport anisotropies. The second is the quantum Hall random-field paramagnet (QHRFPM) that emerges when the Ising ordering is disrupted by quenched di…
We theoretically study the magnetoelectric coupling in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator state induced by interfacing a dynamic magnetization texture to a topological insulator. In particular, we propose that the quantum anomalous Hall insulator with a magnetic configuration of a domain wall, when contacted by electrical reservoirs, acts as a magnetoelectric piston. A moving domain wall pumps charge current between electrical leads in a closed circuit, while applying an electrical bias induces reciprocal domain-wall motion. This piston-like action is enabled by a finite reflection of charge c…
We study spin textures in a quantum Hall Ising ferromagnet. Domain walls between ferro and unpolarized states at $ν=2$ are analyzed with a functional theory supported by a microscopic calculation. In a neutral wall, Hartree repulsion prevents the appearance of a fan phase provoked by a negative stiffness. For a charged system, electrons become trapped as solitons at the domain wall. The size and energy of the solitons are determined by both Hartree and spin-orbit interactions. Finally, we discuss how electrical transport takes place through the domain wall.
We present fractional quantum Hall domain walls confined in a gate-defined wire structure. Our experiments utilize spatial oscillation of domain walls driven by radio frequency electric fields to cause nuclear magnetic resonance. The resulting spectra are discussed in terms of both large quadrupole fields created around the wire and hyperfine fields associated with the oscillating domain walls. This provides the experimental fact that the domain walls survive near the confined geometry despite of potential deformation, by which a localized magnetic resonance is allowed in electrical means.
In this letter the fractional fermion number of thick domain walls is computed. The analysis is achieved by developing the heat kernel expansion of the spectral eta functon of the Dirac Hamiltonian governing the fermionic fluctuations around the domain wall. A formula is derived showing that a non null fermion number is always accompanied by a Hall conductivity induced on the wall. In the limit of thin and impenetrable walls the chiral bag boundary conditions arise, and the Hall conductivity is computed for this case as well.
We explain the recent observation of resistance spikes and hysteretic transport properties in Ising quantum Hall ferromagnets in terms of the unique physics of their domain walls. Self-consistent RPA/Hartree-Fock theory is applied to microscopically determine properties of the ground state and domain-wall excitations. In these systems domain wall loops support one-dimensional electron systems with an effective mass comparable to the bare electron mass and may carry charge. Our theory is able to account quantitatively for the experimental Ising critical temperature and to explain characteristic…
In this article we consider the chiral Hall effect due to topologically protected kink states formed in topological insulators at boundaries between domains with differing topological invariants. Such systems include the surfaces of three dimensional topological insulators magnetically doped or in proximity with ferromagnets, as well as certain two dimensional topological insulators. We analyze the equilibrium charge current along the domain wall and show that it is equal to the sum of counter-propagating equilibrium currents flowing along external boundaries of the domains. In addition, we al…
We study transport in the presence of magnetic domain walls (DWs) in a lattice model of ferromagnetic type-I Weyl metals. We compute the diagonal and Hall conductivities in the presence of a DW, using both Kubo and Landauer formalisms, and uncover the effect of DW scattering. When the Fermi level lies near Weyl points, we find a strong skew scattering at the DW which leads to a significant additional Hall effect. We estimate the average Hall resistivity for multi-domain configurations and identify the limit where the DW scattering contribution becomes significant. We show that a continuum mode…
The recent prediction, and subsequent discovery, of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in thin films of the three-dimensional ferromagnetic topological insulator (MTI) (Cr$_y$Bi$_x$Sb$_{1-x-y}$)$_2$Te$_3$ has opened new possibilities for chiral-edge-state-based devices in zero external magnetic field. Like the $ν=1$ quantum Hall system, the QAH system is predicted to have a single chiral edge mode circulating along the boundary of the film. Backscattering of the chiral edge mode should be suppressed, as recently verified by the observation of well-quantized Hall resistivities $ρ_{yx} = \p…
We present a comprehensive study of the effective Conformal Field Theory (CFT) describing the low energy excitations of a gas of spinless interacting fermions on a circle in the gapless regime (Luttinger liquid). Functional techniques and modular transformation properties are used to compute all correlation functions in a finite size and at finite temperature. Forward scattering disorder is treated exactly. Laughlin experiments on charge transport in a Quantum Hall Fluid on a cylinder are reviewed within this CFT framework. Edge excitations above a given bulk excitation are described by a twis…
We investigate the charge and spin structures associated with arbitrary smooth polarization textures in Ising (integer) quantum Hall ferromagnets. We consider the case where the two polarizations (denoted "pseudospin" up and down) correspond to states with opposite physical spin and different Landau level indices, $n\uparrow$ and $m\downarrow$. We derive analytic expressions for the charge and spin densities, as functions of the underlying pseudospin texture, and use these results to investigate different types of linear domain walls, both analytically and numerically. We find that any smooth …
The motion of magnetic domain walls in ultrathin magnetic heterostructures driven by current via the spin Hall torque is described. We show results from perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB|MgO heterostructures with various heavy metal underlayers. The domain wall moves along or against the current flow depending on the underlayer material. The direction to which the domain wall moves is associated with the chirality of the domain wall spiral formed in these heterostructures. The one-dimensional model is used to describe the experimental results and extract parameters such as the Dzyaloshinskii-Mo…
Domain walls, topological defects that define the frontier between regions of different stacking in multilayer graphene, have proved to host exciting physics. The ability of tuning these topological defects in-situ in an electronic transport experiment brings a wealth of possibilities in terms of fundamental understanding of domain walls as well as for electronic applications. Here, we demonstrate through a MEMS (micro-electromechanical system) actuator and magnetoresistance measurements the effect of domain walls in multilayer graphene quantum Hall effect. Reversible and controlled uniaxial s…
We study deterministic magnetic reversal of a perpendicularly magnetized Co layer in a Co/MgO/Ta nano-square driven by spin Hall torque from an in-plane current flowing in an underlying Pt layer. The rate-limiting step of the switching process is domain-wall (DW) depinning by spin Hall torque via a thermally-assisted mechanism that eventually produces full reversal by domain expansion. An in-plane applied magnetic field collinear with the current is required, with the necessary field scale set by the need to overcome DW chirality imposed by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Once Joule hea…
It is shown that the low-energy spectrum of a ferromagnetic quantum Hall effect liquid in a system with a multi-domain structure generated by an inhomogeneous bare Zeeman splitting $ε_{Z}$ is formed by excitations localized at the walls between domains. For a step-like $ε_Z(r)$, the domain wall spectrum includes a spin-wave with a linear dispersion and a small gap due to spin-orbit coupling, and a low-energy topological defects. The latter are charged and may dominate in the transport under conditions that the percolation through the network of domain walls is provided.
Theoretically, we study the dynamics of a current induced domain wall in the bi-layer structure consists of a ferromagnetic layer and a non-magnetic metal layer with strong spin-orbit coupling in the presence of spin-Hall effect. The analytical expressions for the velocity and width of the domain wall interms of excitation angle are obtained by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with adiabatic, nonadiabatic and spin Hall effect-spin transfer torques using Schryers and Walker's method. Numerical results show that the occurance of polarity switching in the domain wall is observed only …
A moving magnetic skyrmion exhibits transverse deflection. This so-called skyrmion Hall effect has been explained by the Thiele equation. Here, we provide an alternative interpretation of the skyrmion Hall effect based on the dynamics of domain walls enclosing the skyrmion. We relate the spin-torque-induced local rotation of the domain wall segments to the shift of the skyrmion core, explaining the skyrmion Hall effect at the micromagnetic level. Bases on our intuitive interpretation, we also show that the skyrmion Hall effect can be suppressed by combining the spin-transfer and spin-orbit tor…
We show that the $ν=8$ integer quantum Hall state can support Majorana zero modes at domain walls between its two different stable chiral edge phases without superconductivity. This is due to the existence of an edge phase that does not support gapless fermionic excitations; all gapless excitations are bosonic in this edge phase. Majorana fermion zero modes occur at a domain wall between this edge phase and the more conventional one that does support gapless fermions. Remarkably, due to the chirality of the system, the topological degeneracy of these zero modes has exponential protection, as a…

An established way of realizing topologically protected states in a two-dimensional electron gas is by applying a perpendicular magnetic field thus creating quantum Hall edge channels. In electrostatically gapped bilayer graphene intriguingly, even in the absence of a magnetic field topologically protected electronic states can emerge at naturally occurring stacking domain walls. While individually both types of topologically protected states have been investigated, their intriguing interplay remains poorly understood. Here, we focus on the interplay between topological domain wall states and …
We discuss how the braiding properties of Laughlin quasi-particles in quantum Hall states can be understood within a one-dimensional formalism we proposed earlier. In this formalism the two-dimensional space of the Hall liquid is identified with the phase space of a one-dimensional lattice system, and localized Laughlin quasi-holes can be understood as coherent states of lattice solitons. The formalism makes comparatively little use of the detailed structure of Laughlin wavefunctions, and may offer ways to be generalized to non-abelian states.
Chiral conformal field theories are characterized by a ground-state current at finite temperature, that could be observed, e.g. in the edge excitations of the quantum Hall effect. We show that the corresponding thermal conductance is directly proportional to the gravitational anomaly of the conformal theory, upon extending the well-known relation between specific heat and conformal anomaly. The thermal current could signal the elusive neutral edge modes that are expected in the hierarchical Hall states. We then compute the thermal conductance for the Abelian multi-component theory and the W-in…
We study the ac current-driven domain wall motion in bilayer ferromagnetic metal (FM)/nonmagnetic metal (NM) nanowire. The solution of the modified Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation including all the spin transfer torques is used to describe motion of the domain wall in presence of the spin Hall effect. We show that the domain wall center has second harmonic frequency response in addition to the known first harmonic excitation. In contrast to the experimentally observed second harmonic response in harmonic Hall measurements of spin-orbit torque in magnetic thin films, this second harmonic respo…
We investigate the possible emergence of topological Hall effect (THE) in a driven magnetic DW. Numerical simulation based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski (LLGS) equation shows that the emergent magnetic flux appears when the DW is in a non-equilibrium state. The magnitude of magnetic flux is modulated by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) or in-plane longitudinal magnetic field, providing an experimental test of the predicted THE. These results indicate that the THE can be observed even in a topologically trivial magnetic DW, and therefore open up new possibility to electrical…
We propose an effective Lagrangian for the low energy theory of the Pfaffian states of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the bulk in terms of non-Abelian Chern-Simons (CS) actions. Our approach exploits the connection between the topological Chern-Simons theory and chiral conformal field theories. This construction can be used to describe a large class of non-Abelian FQH states.
The magnetotransport properties of disordered ferromagnetic kagome layers are investigated numerically. We show that a large domain-wall magnetoresistance or negative magnetoresistance can be realized in kagome layered materials (e.g. Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, and Mn$_3$Sn), which show the quantum anomalous Hall effect. The kagome layers show a strong magnetic anisotropy and a large magnetoresistance depending on their magnetic texture. These domain-wall magnetoresistances are expected to be robust against disorder and observed irrespective of the domain-wall thickness, in contrast to c…
We construct an effective conformal field theory by using a procedure which induces twisted boundary conditions for the fundamental scalar fields. That allows to describe a quantum Hall fluid at Jain hierarchical filling, nu=m/(2pm+1), in terms of one charged scalar field and m-1 neutral ones. Then the resulting algebra of the chiral primary fields is U(1)xW_m. Finally the ground state wave functions are given as correlators of appropriate composite fields (a-electrons).
Micro-Hall magnetometry is employed to study the magnetization dynamics of a single, micron-size CrO$_2$ grain. With this technique we track the motion of a single domain wall, which allows us to probe the distribution of imperfections throughout the material. An external magnetic field along the grain's easy magnetization direction induces magnetization reversal, giving rise to a series of sharp jumps in magnetization. Supported by micromagnetic simulations, we identify the transition to a state with a single cross-tie domain wall, where pinning/depinning of the wall results in stochastic Bar…
We theoretically study the current-induced dynamics of a transverse magnetic domain wall in bi-layer nanowires consisting of a ferromagnet on top of a nonmagnet having strong spin-orbit coupling. Domain wall dynamics is characterized by two threshold current densities, $J_{th}^{WB}$ and $J_{th}^{REV}$, where $J_{th}^{WB}$ is a threshold for the chirality switching of the domain wall and $J_{th}^{REV}$ is another threshold for the reversed domain wall motion caused by spin Hall effect. Domain walls with a certain chirality may move opposite to the electron-flow direction with high speed in the …
We present here a way to modulate the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) by anomalous Hall signal and thus measure the domain wall (DW) motion velocity at near-coercivity. We study the magnetization relaxation at the constant field in the longitudinal (Rxx) Hall geometry. We observed asymmetric Rxx peaks that appear at the DW pinning fields. This unusual magnetoresistance behavior is explained by considering the AMR modulation by the anomalous Hall voltage. In the proposed method, using the magnetization relaxation, the real-time DW velocity measurement is much easier in comparison to the oth…
We report the interplay between two different topological phases in condensed matter physics, the magnetic chiral domain wall (DW), and the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. We show that the chiral DW driven by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) can divide the uniform domain into several zones where the neighboring zone possesses opposite quantized Hall conductance. The separated domain with a chiral edge state (CES) can be continuously modified by external magnetic field-induced domain expansion and thermal fluctuation, which gives rise to the reconfigurable QAH effect. More interesti…
Laughlin's wave functions, describing the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factors $ν=1/(2k+1)$, can be obtained as correlation functions in conformal field theory, and recently this construction was extended to Jain's composite fermion wave functions at filling factors $ν=n/(2kn+1)$. Here we generalize this latter construction and present ground state wave functions for all quantum Hall hierarchy states that are obtained by successive condensation of quasielectrons (as opposed to quasiholes) in the original hierarchy construction. By considering these wave functions on a cylinder, we…
Quasiparticle spin (in the spacetime sense) couples to curvature of space. Here this fact is used to calculate the spin of quasiholes in trial quantum Hall states by adiabatically dragging them around on a sphere, for trial states given by conformal blocks in some conformal field theory. The spin is found to agree with the conformal weight of the corresponding field. The result completes a recent argument that constructions using blocks from non-unitary theories that contain negative quantum dimensions produce contradictions that prevent them from describing topological (gapped) phases of matt…
Motivated by recent experimental results, we reconsider the theory of the edge excitations for the fractional Hall effect at filling factors $ν=p/(2np+1)$. We propose to modify the standard $u(1)\otimes su(p)$ edge theory for this series by introducing twist fields which change the boundary conditions of the bosonic fields and simulate the effect of fractions of flux quanta $ϕ_0/p$. This has the effect of removing the conserved charges associated to the neutral modes while keeping the right statistics of the particles. The Green function of the electron in presence of twists decays at long dis…
In a recent experiment, half-quantized longitudinal conductance plateaus (HQCPs) of height $\frac{e^2}{2h}$ have been observed in quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator/superconductor heterostructure transport measurements. It was predicted that these HQCPs are signatures of chiral Majorana edge states. The HQCPs are supposed to appear in the regimes where the Hall conductance $σ_{xy}$ is quantized. However, experimentally, a pair of the HQCPs appear when the Hall conductance $σ_{xy}$ is only 80% of the quantized value when dissipative channels appear in the bulk. The dissipative channels in t…
We present an approach to the computation of the non-Abelian statistics of quasiholes in quantum Hall states, such as the Pfaffian state, whose wavefunctions are related to the conformal blocks of minimal model conformal field theories. We use the Coulomb gas construction of these conformal field theories to formulate a plasma analogy for the quantum Hall states. A number of properties of the Pfaffian state follow immediately, including the Berry phases which demonstrate the quasiholes' fractional charge, the abelian statistics of the two-quasihole state, and equal-time ground state correlatio…
We analyze the non-abelian Read-Rezayi quantum Hall states on the torus, where it is natural to employ a mapping of the many-body problem onto a one-dimensional lattice model. On the thin torus--the Tao-Thouless (TT) limit--the interacting many-body problem is exactly solvable. The Read-Rezayi states at filling $ν=\frac k {kM+2}$ are known to be exact ground states of a local repulsive $k+1$-body interaction, and in the TT limit this is manifested in that all states in the ground state manifold have exactly $k$ particles on any $kM+2$ consecutive sites. For $M\neq 0$ the two-body correlations …
We propose field theories for the bulk and edge of a quantum Hall state in the universality class of the Haldane-Rezayi wavefunction. The bulk theory is associated with the $c=-2$ conformal field theory. The topological properties of the state, such as the quasiparticle braiding statistics and ground state degeneracy on a torus, may be deduced from this conformal field theory. The 10-fold degeneracy on a torus is explained by the existence of a logarithmic operator in the $c=-2$ theory; this operator corresponds to a novel bulk excitation in the quantum Hall state. We argue that the edge theor…
Many trial wavefunctions for fractional quantum Hall states in a single Landau level are given by functions called conformal blocks, taken from some conformal field theory. Also, wavefunctions for certain paired states of fermions in two dimensions, such as p_x+ip_y states, reduce to such a form at long distances. Here we investigate the adiabatic transport of such many-particle trial wavefunctions using methods from two-dimensional field theory. One context for this is to calculate the statistics of widely-separated quasiholes, which has been predicted to be non-Abelian in a variety of cases.…
In the last decade, two revolutionary concepts in nano magnetism emerged from research for storage technologies and advanced information processing. The first suggests the use of magnetic domain walls (DWs) in ferromagnetic nanowires to permanently store information in DW racetrack memories. The second proposes a hardware realisation of neuromorphic computing in nanomagnets using nonlinear magnetic oscillations in the GHz range. Both ideas originate from the transfer of angular momentum from conduction electrons to localised spins in ferromagnets, either to push data encoded in DWs along nanow…
We propose a realization of perfect valley filters based on the chiral domain-wall channels between a quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a quantum valley Hall insulator. Uniquely, all these channels reside in the same valley and propagate unidirectionally, $100\%$ valley-polarizing passing-by carriers without backscattering. The valley index, the chirality, and the number of the channels are protected by topological charges, controllable by external fields, and detectable by circular dichroism.
Motivated by recent all optical NMR experiments\cite{Awschalom1,Awschalom2} on GaAs quantum wells, we propose new experiments that would involve creating spatially modulated nuclear spin profiles. Due to the hyperfine coupling these would appear as spatially modulated Overhauser fields for the electrons that could have an amplitude large enough to cancel or even reverse the external Zeeman field at some places. We discuss 2D electron gas transport in the quantum Hall regime at filling factor $ν= 1$, and demonstrate the existence of collective modes and topological excitations induced in the el…
The Z_k-parafermion Hall state is an incompressible fluid of k-electron clusters generalizing the Pfaffian state of paired electrons. Extending our earlier analysis of the Pfaffian, we introduce two ``parent'' abelian Hall states which reduce to the parafermion state by projecting out some neutral degrees of freedom. The first abelian state is a generalized (331) state which describes clustering of k distinguishable electrons and reproduces the parafermion state upon symmetrization over the electron coordinates. This description yields simple expressions for the quasi-particle wave functions o…
Recent studies on heterostructures of ultrathin ferromagnets sandwiched between a heavy metal layer and an oxide have highlighted the importance of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and broken inversion symmetry in domain wall (DW) motion. Specifically, chiral DWs are stabilized in these systems due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). SOC can also lead to enhanced current induced DW motion, with the spin Hall effect (SHE) suggested as the dominant mechanism for this observation. The efficiency of SHE driven DW motion depends on the internal magnetic structure of the DW, which could be cont…
We present an enhanced diffusion of nuclear spin polarization in fractional quantum Hall domain phases at $ν= 2/3$. Resistively-detected NMR mediated by electrically driven domain-wall motion is used as a probe of local nuclear polarization, manifesting pumping-dependent signal saturation behavior. This reveals that a relatively homogeneous polarization profile spreads even to places distant from pinning centers of the domain walls. We attribute this to the fact that the pumped nuclear polarization near the domain walls rapidly diffuses into the domains where nuclei experience Knight fields on…
For a sample of an arbitrary shape, the dependence of its conductance on the longitudinal and Hall conductivity is identical to that of a rectangle. We use analytic results for a conducting rectangle, combined with the semicircle model for transport coefficients, to study properties of the monolayer and bilayer graphene. A conductance plateau centered at the neutrality point, predicted for square geometry, is in agreement with recent experiments. For rectangular geometry, the conductance exhibits maxima at the densities of compressible quantum Hall states for wide samples, and minima for narro…
