Quasiparticle spin (in the spacetime sense) couples to curvature of space. Here this fact is used to calculate the spin of quasiholes in trial quantum Hall states by adiabatically dragging them around on a sphere, for trial states given by conformal blocks in some conformal field theory. The spin is found to agree with the conformal weight of the corresponding field. The result completes a recent argument that constructions using blocks from non-unitary theories that contain negative quantum dimensions produce contradictions that prevent them from describing topological (gapped) phases of matter.
We study properties of some known trial wavefunctions in bilayer quantum Hall systems at the total filling factor $ ν_{T}=1 $. In particular, we find that the properties of a meron wavefunction and a natural "quasi-hole" wave function are dramatically different due to the broken symmetry and the associated Goldstone mode in the bulk. Although the (smallest) meron has localized charge $ 1/2 $ and logarithmically divergent energy, the charge of the quasi-hole excitation extends over the whole system and its energy diverges linearly with the area of the system. This indicates that the natural qua…
Quantum Hall bilayer systems at filling fractions near ν= 1/2 + 1/2 undergo a transition from a compressible phase with strong intralayer correlation to an incompressible phase with strong interlayer correlations as the layer separation d is reduced below some critical value. Deep in the intralayer phase (large separation) the system can be interpreted as a fluid of composite fermions (CFs), whereas deep in the interlayer phase (small separation) the system can be interpreted as a fluid of composite bosons (CBs). The focus of this paper is to understand the states that occur for intermediate l…
Based on the known physics of the excitonic superfluid or 111 state of the quantum Hall ν=1/2+1/2 bilayer, we create a simple trial wavefunction ansatz for constructing a low energy branch of (Goldstone) excitations by taking the overall ground state and boosting one layer with respect to the other. This ansatz works extremely well for any interlayer spacing. For small d this is simply the physics of the Goldstone mode, whereas for large d this is a reflection of composite fermion physics. We find hints that certain aspects of composite fermion physics persist to low d whereas certain aspects …
Employing the Haldane-Rezayi periodic representation, the crystalline determinantal Hall crystal mean field solutions derived in previous works are used to construct variational wavefunctions for the FQHE at $ν=1/q$. The proposed states optimize the short range correlations in a similar measure as the Laughlin ones, since the zero of the states when the coordinates of two particles join is of order $q$. However, the proposed wavefunctions also incorporate the crystalline correlations of the mean field problem, through a determinantal mean field function entering their construction. The above p…
We show that the topological central charge of a topological phase can be directly accessed from the ground-state wavefunctions for a system on a surface as a Berry curvature produced by adiabatic variation of the metric on the surface, at least up to addition of another topological invariant that arises in some cases. For trial wavefunctions that are given by conformal blocks (chiral correlation functions) in a conformal field theory (CFT), we carry out this calculation analytically, using the hypothesis of generalized screening. The topological central charge is found to be that of the under…
We investigate the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall state with one and two quasiparticle excitations. It is shown that the quasiparticle excitations are best described as excited composite fermions occupying higher composite-fermion quasi-Landau levels. In particular, the composite-fermion wave function for a single quasiparticle has 15% lower energy than the trial wave function suggested by Laughlin, and for two quasiparticles, the composite fermion theory also gives new qualitative structures.
Standard bosonization techniques lead to phonon-like excitations in a Luttinger liquid (LL), reflecting the absence of Landau quasiparticles in these systems. Yet in addition to the above excitations some LL are known to possess solitonic states carrying fractional quantum numbers (e.g. the spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain). We have reconsidered the zero modes in the low-energy spectrum of the gaussian boson LL hamiltonian both for fermionic and bosonic LL: in the spinless case we find that two elementary excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers allow to generate all the charge and current exc…
We present a set of explicit trial wavefunctions for the filling factors ν=n/(2n\pm 1) and ν=1/2 in the symmetric gauge. We show that the zeroes of the wavefunction, except those dictated by the Fermi statistics, are detached from the particles. The evolution of zeroes as the filling factor is varied is examined. We show that the wavefunction at half-filling exhibits a 2k_F-like oscillation in its occupation number profile. The center-of-mass motion of the ground state droplet is described in terms of the intra-Landau- level excitations of composite fermions.
We show that for a class of model Hamiltonians for which certain trial quantum Hall wavefunctions are exact ground states, there is a single spectral density function which controls all two-point correlation functions of density, current and stress tensor components. From this we show that the static structure factors of these wavefunctions behaves at long wavelengths as $s_4 k^4$ where the coefficient $s_4$ is directly related to the shift: $s_4=(\mathcal S-1)/8$.
We report on a study of the classical field theory description of charged skyrmions in quantum Hall ferromagnets. The appropriate field theory is a non-linear $σ$ model generalized to include Coulomb and Zeeman interaction terms. We have tested the range of validity of the classical field theory by comparing with microscopic descriptions of the single skyrmion state based on the Hartree-Fock approximation, exact diagonalization calculations, and many-body trial wavefunctions. We find that the field theory description is accurate for skyrmions with moderate spin quantum numbers ($\gtrsim 10$) a…
We propose a new ground state trial wavefunction for a two-dimensional Wigner crystal in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. The wavefunction includes Laughlin-Jastrow correlations between electron pairs, and may be interpreted as a crystal state of composite fermions or composite bosons. Treating the power $m$ of the Laughlin-Jastrow factor as a variational parameter, we use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to compute the energy of these new states. We find that our wavefunctions have lower energy than existing crystalline wavefunctions in the lowest Landau level. Our results are consistent…
We consider spaces of trial wavefunctions for ground states and edge excitations in the fractional quantum Hall effect that can be obtained in various ways. In one way, functions are obtained by analyzing the entanglement of the ground state wavefunction, partitioned into two parts. In another, functions are defined by the way in which they vanish as several coordinates approach the same value, or by a projection-operator Hamiltonian that enforces those conditions. In a third way, functions are given by conformal blocks from a conformal field theory (CFT). These different spaces of functions a…
Theory predicts that quasiparticle tunneling between the counter-propagating edges in a fractional quantum Hall state can be used to measure the effective quasiparticle charge e* and dimensionless interaction parameter g, and thereby characterize the many-body wavefunction describing the state. We report measurements of quasiparticle tunneling in a high mobility GaAs two dimensional electron system in the fractional quantum Hall state at nu=5/2 using a gate-defined constriction to bring the edges close together. We find the dc-bias peaks in the tunneling conductance at different temperatures c…

We provide a robust and generic method to assess the screening properties and extract the scaling exponents of quasiparticle edge excitations of quantum Hall states from model wavefunctions. We numerically implement this method for the fundamental quasihole and hole excitations of several model states. For the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Z_3-Read-Rezayi states, we find agreement with the predicted edge theory, verifying the bulk-edge correspondence. We also use this to obtain the first clear microscopic demonstration of the pathologies of the Gaffnian wavefunctions.
We consider the trial wavefunctions for the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE) that are given by conformal blocks, and construct their associated edge excited states in full generality. The inner products between these edge states are computed in the thermodynamic limit, assuming generalized screening (i.e. short-range correlations only) inside the quantum Hall droplet, and using the language of boundary conformal field theory (boundary CFT). These inner products take universal values in this limit: they are equal to the corresponding inner products in the bulk 2d chiral CFT which underlies…
We use particle entanglement spectra to characterize bosonic quantum Hall states on lattices, motivated by recent studies of bosonic atoms on optical lattices. Unlike for the related problem of fractional Chern insulators, very good trial wavefunctions are known for fractional quantum Hall states on lattices. We focus on the entanglement spectra for the Laughlin state at $ν=1/2$ for the non-Abelian Moore-Read state at $ν=1$. We undertake a comparative study of these trial states to the corresponding groundstates of repulsive two-body or three-body contact interactions on the lattice. The magni…

Many trial wavefunctions for fractional quantum Hall states in a single Landau level are given by functions called conformal blocks, taken from some conformal field theory. Also, wavefunctions for certain paired states of fermions in two dimensions, such as p_x+ip_y states, reduce to such a form at long distances. Here we investigate the adiabatic transport of such many-particle trial wavefunctions using methods from two-dimensional field theory. One context for this is to calculate the statistics of widely-separated quasiholes, which has been predicted to be non-Abelian in a variety of cases.…
This is an introduction to the microscopic theories of the FQHE. After a brief description of experiments, trial wavefunctions and the physics they contain are discussed. This is followed by a description of the hamiltonian approach, wherein one goes from the electrons to the composite fermions by a series of transformations. The theory is then compared to other theoretical approaches and to experiment.
The yrast spectra (i.e. the lowest states for a given total angular momentum) of quantum dots in strong magnetic fields, are studied in terms of exact numerical diagonalization and analytic trial wave functions. We argue that certain features (cusps) in the many-body spectrum can be understood in terms of particle localization due to the strong field. A new class of trial wavefunctions supports the picture of the electrons being localized in Wigner molecule-like states consisting of consecutive rings of electrons, with low-lying excitations corresponding to rigid rotation of the outer ring of …
Generalized Z_k^(r/2) parafermionic theories - characterized by the dimension (r/2)(1-1/k) of the basic parafermionic field - provide potentially interesting quantum-Hall trial wavefunctions. Such wavefunctions reveal a W_k structure. This suggests the equivalence of (a subclass of) the Z_k^(r/2) models and the W_k(k+1,k+r) ones. This is demonstrated here for r=3 (the gaffnian series). The agreement of the parafermionic and the W spectra relies on the prior determination of the field identifications in the parafermionic case.
The nu=5/2 fractional quantum Hall state is studied numerically, directly including the effects of electron scattering between neighboring Landau levels. Significant reduction of the excitation gap caused by the LL mixing explains the discrepancy between earlier calculations and experiments. On the other hand, LL mixing also considerably reduces overlaps with the Moore--Read wavefunction, raising a question of the actual realization of nonabelian quasiparticles in present experiments.
Despite the high overlap with the exact Coulomb ground state, the so-called Gaffnian state fails to describe the incompressibility at the 2/5 quantum Hall filling factor and consequently it was conjectured to be a quantum critical state. To achieve a gapped state starting from the Gaffnian wavefunction, which we interpret as the inter-flavor pairing of the composite fermions, we propose a minimally `modified Gaffnian' wavefunction keeping the pairing intact. We find that a suitable hybridization of these two wavefunctions is an excellent description of the 2/5 quantum Hall state. It has a very…
We calculate the low-frequency magnetoplasmon excitation spectrum for a square array of quantum dots on a two-dimensional (2D) graphene layer. The confining potential is linear in the distance from the center of the quantum dot. The electron eigenstates in a magnetic field and confining potential are mapped onto a 2D plane of electron-hole pairs in an effective magnetic field without any confinement. The tight-binding model for the array of quantum dots leads to a wavefunction with inter-dot mixing of the quantum numbers associated with an isolated quantum dot. For chosen confinement, magnetic…
Due to its fourfold spin-valley degeneracy, graphene in a strong magnetic field may be viewed as a four-component quantum Hall system. We investigate the consequences of this particular structure on a possible, yet unobserved, fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene within a trial-wavefunction approach and exact-diagonalisation calculations. This trial-wavefunction approach generalises an original idea by Halperin to account for the SU(2) spin in semiconductor heterostructures with a relatively weak Zeeman effect. Whereas the four-component structure at a filling factor nu=1/3 adds simply a…
The quasiholes of the Read-Rezayi clustered quantum Hall states are considered, for any number of particles and quasiholes on a sphere, and for any degree k of clustering. A set of trial wavefunctions, that are zero-energy eigenstates of a k+1-body interaction, and so are symmetric polynomials that vanish when any k+1 particle coordinates are equal, is obtained explicitly and proved to be both complete and linearly independent. Formulas for the number of states are obtained, without the use of (but in agreement with) conformal field theory, and extended to give the number of states for each an…
Motivated by the quasiparticle wavefunction in the composite fermion (CF) theory for fractional quantum Hall filling factor $ν= 1/m$, I consider a suitable quasiparticle operator in differential form, as a modified form of Laughlin's quasiparticle operator, that reproduces quasiparticle wave function as predicted in the CF theory. I further consider the conjugate of this operator as quasihole operator for obtaining a novel quasihole wave function for $1/m$ state. Each of these wave functions is interpreted as expelled electron into a different Hilbert subspace from the original Hilbert space o…
Majorana quasiparticles localized in vortex cores of a chiral p-wave superconductor hybridize with one another to form bands in a vortex lattice. We begin by solving a fully microscopic theory describing all quasiparticle bands in a chiral p-wave superconductor in magnetic field, then use this solution to build localized Wannier wavefunctions corresponding to Majorana quasiparticles. A low-energy tight-binding theory describing the intervortex hopping of these is then derived, and its topological properties---which depend crucially on the signs of the imaginary intervortex hopping parameters--…
We study the non-Abelian statistics of quasiparticles in the Ising-type quantum Hall states which are likely candidates to explain the observed Hall conductivity plateaus in the second Landau level, most notably the one at filling fraction nu=5/2. We complete the program started in Nucl. Phys. B 506, 685 (1997) and show that the degenerate four-quasihole and six-quasihole wavefunctions of the Moore-Read Pfaffian state are orthogonal with equal constant norms in the basis given by conformal blocks in a c=1+1/2 conformal field theory. As a consequence, this proves that the non-Abelian statistics…
We study the Gaffnian trial wavefunction proposed to describe fractional quantum Hall correlations at Bose filling factor $ν=2/3$ and Fermi filling $ν=2/5$. A family of Hamiltonians interpolating between a hard-core interaction for which the physics is known and a projector whose ground state is the Gaffnian is studied in detail. We give evidence for the absence of a gap by using large-scale exact diagonalizations in the spherical geometry. This is in agreement with recent arguments based on the fact that this wavefunction is constructed from a non-unitary conformal field theory. By using the …
