In this paper, we study a method to obtain non-Abelian FQH state through double-layer FQH states and fractional exciton condensation. In particular, we find that starting with the (330) double-layer state and then increasing the interlayer tunneling strength, we may obtain a single-layer non-Abelian FQH state S(330). We show that the S(330) state is actually the Z_4 parafermion Read-Rezayi state. We also calculate the edge excitation of the S(330) state.
The hydrodynamics equations for indirect excitons in the double quantum wells are obtained taking into account 1) a possibility of an exciton condensed phase formation, 2) the presence of a pumping, 3) the finite value of the exciton lifetime, 4) the exciton scattering by defects.New types of solutions in the form of bright and dark autsolitons are obtained for the exciton density. The role of localized and free exciton states is analyzed in a formation of the emission spectra.

We examine the influence of remote bands on the tendency toward exciton condensation in a system consisting of two parallel graphene layers with negligible interlayer tunneling. We find that the remote bands can play a crucial supporting role, especially at low carrier densities, and comment on some challenges that arise in attempting quantitative estimates of condensation temperatures.
An ordered state of electrons in solids in which excitons condense was proposed many years ago as a theoretical possibility but has, until recently, never been observed. We review recent studies of semiconductor bilayer systems that provide clear evidence for this phenomenon and explain why exciton condensation in the quantum Hall regime, where these experiments were performed, is as likely to occur in electron-electron bilayers as in electron-hole bilayers. In current quantum Hall exciton condensates, disorder induces mobile vortices that flow in response to a supercurrent and limit the extre…
We demonstrate a possibility for exciton Bose-Einstein condensation in individual small-diameter (~1-2 nm) semiconducting carbon nanotubes. The effect occurs under the exciton-interband-plasmon coupling controlled by an external electrostatic field applied perpendicular to the nanotube axis. It requires fields ~1 V/nm and temperatures below 100 K that are experimentally accessible. The effect offers a testing ground for fundamentals of condensed matter physics in one dimension and opens up perspectives to develop tunable coherent polarized light source with carbon nanotubes.
Electrons and holes residing on the opposing sides of an insulating barrier and experiencing an attractive Coulomb interaction can spontaneously form a coherent state known as an indirect exciton condensate. We study a trilayer system where the barrier is an antiferromagnetic insulator. The electrons and holes here additionally interact via interfacial coupling to the antiferromagnetic magnons. We show that by employing magnetically uncompensated interfaces, we can design the magnon-mediated interaction to be attractive or repulsive by varying the thickness of the antiferromagnetic insulator b…
In ordinary semiconductor bilayers, exciton condensates appear at total Landau level filling factor $ν_{T}=1$. We predict that similar states will occur in Bernal stacked graphene bilayers at many non-zero integer filling factors. For $ν_{T} = -3,1$ we find that the superfluid density of the exciton condensate vanishes and that a finite-temperature fluctuation induced first order isotropic-smectic phase transition occurs when the layer densities are not balanced. These anomalous properties of bilayer graphene exciton condensates are due to the degeneracy of Landau levels with $n=0$ and $n=1$ o…
The influence of screening on the condensed state of bilayer graphene is studied within the framework of the Thomas Fermi approximation. We find that screening has little effect on the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature in the strongly interacting regime. Furthermore, we predict that the phase transition to the condensed state is first order.
Exciton condensation, a Bose-Einstein-like condensation of excitons, was recently reported in an electronic double layer (EDL) of graphene. We show that a universal quantum signature for exciton condensation can be used to both identity and quantify exciton condensation in molecular systems from direct calculations of the two-electron reduced density matrix. Computed large eigenvalues in the particle-hole reduced-density matrices of pentacene and hexacene EDLs reveal the beginnings of condensation, suggesting the potential for exciton condensation in smaller scale molecular EDLs.
The condensation of excitons, bound electron-hole pairs in a solid, into a coherent collective electronic state was predicted over 50 years ago. Perhaps surprisingly, the phenomenon was first observed in a system consisting of two closely-spaced parallel two-dimensional electron gases in a semiconductor double quantum well. At an appropriate high magnetic field and low temperature, the bilayer electron system condenses into a state resembling a superconductor, only with the Cooper pairs replaced by excitons comprised of electrons in one layer bound to holes in the other. In spite of being char…
The structure appearance in exciton density distribution in semiconductor double quantum well with transverse electric field applied is studied, in the case when the metal electrode contains a round window. It is suggested that there is exciton condensed phase, free energy of which can be described by phenomenological Landau model. For the exciton density determination the traditional theory of phase transitions was used generated for the case of the finite exciton lifetime, a presence of the pumping and nonhomogenity of the system. It is shown that at high exciton density the different types …
A quasi-exciton condensate is a phase characterized by quasi-long range order of an exciton (electron-hole pair) order parameter. Such a phase can arise naturally in a system of two parallel oppositely doped quantum wires, coupled by repulsive Coulomb interactions. We show that the quasi-exciton condensate phase can be stabilized in an extended range of parameters, in both spinless and spinful systems. For spinful electrons, the exciton phase is shown to be distinct from the usual quasi-long range ordered Wigner crystal phase characterized by power-law density wave correlations. The two phases…
Using Coulomb drag as a probe, we explore the excitonic phase transition in quantum Hall bilayers at nu=1 as a function of Zeeman energy, E_Z. The critical layer separation d/l for exciton condensation initially increases rapidly with E_Z, but then reaches a maximum and begins a gentle decline. At high E_Z, where both the excitonic phase at small d/l and the compressible phase at large d/l are fully spin polarized, we find that the width of the transition, as a function of d/l, is much larger than at small E_Z and persists in the limit of zero temperature. We discuss these results in the conte…
We show theoretically that excitons can form from spatially separated one-dimensional ground state populations of electrons and holes, and that the resulting excitons can form a quasicondensate. We describe a mean-field Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory in the low carrier density regime and then focus on the core-shell nanowire giving estimates of the size of the excitonic gap for InAs/GaSb wires and as a function of all the experimentally relevant parameters. We find that optimal conditions for pairing include small overlap of the electron and hole bands, large effective mass of the carriers, …
In this thesis, we study two different aspects of many-particle physics. In the first part, we study the Bose-Einstein condensation of microcavity exciton-polaritons in different artificial lattices. Bose-Einstein condensation is a quantum phase transition, which allows the system to macroscopically occupy its ground state and develop coherence spontaneously. Often studied in microcavities, which are optical cavities that trap light at specific wavelengths, exciton-polaritons are a kind of quasiparticle arising from the strong coupling between quantum well excitons and cavity photons. By perio…
A theory of the separation of a system of indirect excitons into a condensed and a gaseous phases with the formation of regular patterns of alternating phases in inhomogeneous external fields is developed. The theory is applied to the study of the non-uniform distribution of the exciton density in a double quantum well under a slot cut in a metallic electrode. It is shown that in a certain range of exciton generation rates a chain of light emitting islands periodically localized along the slot is developed. By creating a biased external potential along the slot the periodical pattern could be …
Electrons and holes can spontaneously form excitons and condense in a semimetal or semiconductor, as predicted decades ago. This type of Bose condensation can happen at much higher temperatures in comparison with dilute atomic gases. Two-dimensional (2D) materials with reduced Coulomb screening around the Fermi level are promising for realizing such a system. Here we report a change in the band structure accompanied by a phase transition at about 180 K in single-layer ZrTe2 based on angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. Below the transition temperature, gap opening an…
We have succeeded in trapping indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells in a harmonic potential minimum via inhomogeneous applied stress and electric field. These excitons exhibit a strong Stark shift (over 60 meV), long lifetime (100 ns), and high diffusivity (1000 cm$^2$/s). This approach is very promising for obtaining the high exciton density needed for Bose condensation of excitons in two dimensions.
We investigate the process of condensation of exciton-polaritons in a one-dimensional nanowire, predicting spontaneous formation of domains of uncondensed excitons and condensed polaritons. We demonstrate a universal scaling law for the density of domains, which results from the competition between characteristic timescales present in the system. However, we find that the system does not follow the standard Kibble-Żurek scenario of a nonequilibrium phase transition.
We study the exciton condensate (EC) in a bilayer two-dimension-electron-gas (2DEG) adjacent to a type-II superconductor thin film with an array of pinned vortex lattices. By applying continuum low energy theory and carrying numerical simulations of lattice model within mean-field approximation, we find that if the order parameter of EC has a vortex profile, there are exact zero modes and associated \emph{rational} fractional charge for zero pseudospin potential ($μ$) and average chemical potential ($h$): $μ$=0 and $h$=0; while for $μ\mathtt{\neq}0$ and $h$=0, intervalley mixing splits the zer…
The non elementary-boson nature of excitons controls Bose-Einstein condensation in semiconductors. Composite excitons interact predominantly through Pauli exclusion; this produces dramatic couplings between bright and dark states. In microcavities, where bright excitons and photons form polaritons, they force the condensate to be linearly polarized--as observed. In bulk, they also force linear polarization, but of dark states, due to interband Coulomb scatterings. To evidence this dark condensate, we thus need indirect processes, like the shift it induces on the (bright) exciton line.
The concept of quantum plasmonic excitations in plasmonic lattices, which similarly to Frenkel excitons in molecular crystals propagate by hopping from one nanoparticle to another, is introduced. A consistent quantum theory of such plasmonic excitons, beginning with the quantization of localized surface plasmons in a metal nanoparticle and including the radiative relaxation in both 1D and 2D lattices near a reflective substrate surface, is developed. A possible room-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation in the quantum gas of plasmonic excitons is also discussed.
We study theoretically the exciton Bose-Einstein condensation and exciton vortices in a two-dimensional (2D) perovskite (PEA)2PbI4 monolayer. Combining the first-principles calculations and the Keldysh model, the exciton binding energy of (PEA)2PbI4 in a monolayer can approach hundreds meV, which make it possible to observe the excitonic effect at room temperature. Due to the large exciton binding energy, and hence the high density of excitons, we find that the critical temperature of the exciton condensation could approach the liquid nitrogen regime. In presence of perpendicular electric fiel…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful probe of electron correlations in two-dimensional layered materials. In this Letter we demonstrate that ARPES can be used to probe the onset of exciton condensation in spatially-separated systems of electrons and holes created by gating techniques in either double-layer graphene or topological-insulator thin films.
We examine the Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity via an electrical current. We propose that by embedding a quantum dot p-i-n junction inside the cavity, the tunneling current through the device can reveal features of condensation due to a one-to-one correspondence of the photons to the condensate polaritons. Such a device can also be used to observe the phase interference of the order parameters from two condensates.
Bose Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons has recently been reported in homogeneous structures only affected by random in-plane fluctuations. We have taken advantage of the ubiquitous defects in semiconductor microcavities to reveal the spontaneous dynamical condensation of polaritons in the quantised levels of a trap. We observe condensation in several quantized states, taking their snapshots in real and reciprocal space. We show also the effect of particle interactions for high occupations numbers, revealed by a change in the confined wave function toward the Thomas Fermi profile.
We report quantum coherent oscillations of photocapacitance of a double-barrier resonant tunneling heterostructure with bias at 10 K. Periodic presence and absence of sharp excitonic transitions in photocapacitance spectra with increasing bias demonstrate strong coupling between InAs quantum dots (0D) and triangular GaAs quantum well (2D). Coherent resonant tunneling in this 0D-2D heterostructure establishes the momentum space narrowing of excitonic Bose-Einstein Condensation. Drastic increase of indirect exciton densities below 70 K reveal that excitonic wave functions anchored with each InAs…
The Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons into a single quantum state is known as exciton condensation. Exciton condensation, which potentially supports the frictionless flow of energy, has recently been realized in graphene bilayers and van der Waals heterostructures. Here we show that exciton condensates can be predicted from a combination of reduced density matrix theory and cumulant theory. We show that exciton condensation occurs if and only if there exists a large eigenvalue in the cumulant part of the particle-hole reduced density matrix. In the thermodynamic limit we show that the lar…
We study the phase diagram of the inverted InAs/GaSb bilayer quantum wells. For small tunneling amplitude between the layers, we find that the system is prone to formation of an s-wave exciton condensate phase, where the spin-structure of the order parameter is uniquely determined by the small spin-orbit coupling arising from the bulk inversion asymmetry. The phase is topologically trivial and does not support edge transport. On the contrary, for large tunneling amplitude, we obtain a topologically non-trivial quantum spin Hall insulator phase with a p-wave exciton order parameter, which enhan…
Tunneling spectroscopy reveals evidence for interlayer electron-hole correlations in quantum Hall bilayer two-dimensional electron systems at layer separations near, but above, the transition to the incompressible exciton condensate at total Landau level filling $ν_T=1$. These correlations are manifested by a non-linear suppression of the Coulomb pseudogap which inhibits low energy interlayer tunneling in weakly-coupled bilayers. The pseudogap suppression is strongest at $ν_T=1$ and grows rapidly as the critical layer separation for exciton condensation is approached from above.
Exciton condensation, a Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons into a single quantum state, has recently been achieved in low-dimensional materials including twin layers of graphene and van der Waals heterostructures. Here we examine computationally the beginnings of exciton condensation in a double layer comprised of coronene, a seven-benzene-ring patch of graphene. As a function of interlayer separation, we compute the exciton population in a single coherent quantum state, showing that the population peaks around 1.8 at distances near 2 Å. Visualization reveals interlayer excitons at the sep…
We investigate the correction of interlayer exciton binding energy in transition metal dichalcogenides double layers arising from the exciton-optical phonon coupling using the method of Lee-Low-Pines unitary transformation. We find that the binding energy varies in several tens of meV, depending on the polarizability of materials and interlayer distance between double layers. Moreover, the correction of binding energy results in the remarkable increasing of the critical temperature for the condensation of dilute excitonic gas basing on the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless model. These results n…
Coupled states of semiconductor quantum well (QW) excitons and photons in a two dimensional (2D) periodic lattice of microcavities are analyzed theoretically, revealing allowed bands and forbidden gaps in the energy spectrum of exciton polaritons. Photonic crystal exciton polaritons have spatially uniform excitonic constituent set by flat QWs, but exhibit periodic Bloch oscillations in the plane of QWs due to their photonic component. The envelope functions of photonic crystal exciton polaritons can be tailored via effective potential of a photonic crystal heterostructure, by using quasi-perio…
We show that an interlayer exciton condensate doped into a strongly correlated Mott insulator exhibits a remarkable enhancement of the bandwidth of the magnetic excitations (triplons). This triplon is visible in the dynamical magnetic susceptibility and can be measured using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. The bandwidth of the triplon scales with the exciton superfluid density, but only in the limit of strong correlations. As such the triplon bandwidth acts as a probe of exciton-spin interactions in the condensate.
A theoretical model is developed for treating super conductive Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) effects for excitons in planar systems, under the condition that many excitons are included in a surface area, with the dimensions of the exciton center of mass de Broglie (dB) wave length, and under the condition that attractive forces are introduced between different excitons. The total internal energy of the excitonic system is found to be composed of the separate excitons positive energies, and negative energy due to scattering between different excitons. We assume that for high density of excit…
A Bose-Einstein condensate is the ground state of a dilute gas of bosons, such as atoms cooled to temperatures close to absolute zero. With much smaller mass, excitons (bound electron-hole pairs) are expected to condense at significantly higher temperatures. Here we study electrically generated interlayer excitons in MoSe2/WSe2 atomic double layers with density up to 10^12 cm-2. The interlayer tunneling current depends only on exciton density, indicative of correlated electron-hole pair tunneling. Strong electroluminescence (EL) arises when a hole tunnels from WSe2 to recombine with electron i…

Correlations of luminescence intensity have been studied under Bose-Einstein condensation of dipolar excitons in the temperature range of 0.45-4.2 K. Photoexcited dipolar excitons were collected in a lateral trap in GaAs/AlGaAs Schottky-diode heterostructure with single wide (25 nm) quantum well under applied electric bias. Two-photon correlations were measured with the use of a classical Hanbury Brown - Twiss intensity interferometer (time resolution ~0.4 ns). Photon "bunching" has been observed near the Bose condensation threshold of dipolar excitons determined by the appearance of a narrow …
At a large displacement field, in rhomboedral and Bernal-stacked graphene a normal paramagnetic state transitions to a correlated state. Recent experiments showed that such systems have several phase transitions as a function of the carrier density. The phase adjacent to a paramagnetic state has anomalously high resistance and reduced degeneracy of the Fermi sea. We show that both phenomena can be explained through a concept of partial intervalley exciton condensation: a fraction of particles condenses into excitons, and another forms an intervalley coherent Fermi liquid. The exciton part of t…
In this paper we show experimental evidence of a few correlation regimes of a cold dipolar exciton fluid, created optically in a semiconductor bilayer heterostructure. In the higher temperature regime, the average interaction energy between the particles shows a surprising temperature dependence which is an evidence for correlations beyond the mean field model. At a lower temperature, there is a sharp increase in the interaction energy of optically active excitons, accompanied by a strong reduction in their apparent population. This is an evidence for a sharp macroscopic transition to a dark s…
We propose a way to increase the lifetime of two-dimensional direct excitons and show the possibility to observe their macroscopically coherent state at high temperatures. For a single GaAs quantum well embedded in photonic layered heterostructures with subwavelength period, we predict the exciton radiative decay to be strongly suppressed. Quantum hydrodynamic approach is used to study the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless crossover in a finite exciton system with intermediate densities. Below the estimated critical temperatures, drastic growth of the correlation length is shown to be accompanie…
We create exciton-polaritons in a zero-dimensional (0D) microcavity filled with organic ladder-type conjugated polymer in the strong light-matter interaction regime. Photonic confinement at wavelength scale is realized in the longitudinal direction by two dielectric Bragg mirrors and laterally by a sub-micron Gaussian-shaped defect. The cavity is separated into two parts allowing nanometer position control and enabling tuning of exciton and photon fractions of the polariton wavefunction. Polariton condensation is achieved with non-resonant, picosecond optical excitation at ambient conditions a…
We study the metal-insulator transition in individual self-assembled quantum wires and report optical evidences of metallic liquid condensation at low temperatures. Firstly, we observe that the temperature and power dependence of the single nanowire photoluminescence follow the evolution expected for an electron-hole liquid in one dimension. Secondly, we find novel spectral features that suggest that in this situation the expanding liquid condensate compresses the exciton gas in real space. Finally, we estimate the critical density and critical temperature of the phase transition diagram at $n…
The possibility of excitonic condensation in a recently proposed electrically biased double-layer graphene system is studied theoretically. The main emphasis is put on obtaining a reliable analytical estimate for the transition temperature into the excitonic state. As in a double-layer graphene system the total number of fermionic "flavors" is equal to N=8 due to two projections of spin, two valleys, and two layers, the large-$N$ approximation appears to be especially suitable for theoretical investigation of the system. On the other hand, the large number of flavors makes screening of the bar…
Bose-Einstein condensation in strongly correlated lattices provides the possibility to coherently generate macroscopic quantum states, which have attracted tremendous attention as ideal platforms for quantum simulation. Ultracold atoms in optical lattices are one of such promising systems, where their realizations of different phases of matter exhibit promising applications in condensed matter physics, chemistry, and cosmology. Nevertheless, this is only accessible with ultralow temperatures in the nano to micro Kelvin scale set by the typical inverse mass of an atom. Alternative systems such …
We investigate the quasiparticle excitation of the bilayer quantum Hall (QH) system at total filling factor $ν_{\mathrm{T}} = 1$ in the limit of negligible interlayer tunneling under tilted magnetic field. We show that the intrinsic quasiparticle excitation is of purely pseudospin origin and solely governed by the inter- and intra-layer electron interactions. A model based on exciton formation successfully explains the quantitative behavior of the quasiparticle excitation gap, demonstrating the existence of a link between the excitonic QH state and the composite fermion liquid. Our results pro…
An odd number of gapless Dirac fermions is guaranteed to exist at a surface of a strong topological insulator. We show that in a thin-film geometry and under external bias, electron-hole pairs that reside in these surface states can condense to form a coherent exciton condensate, similar in general terms to the exciton condensate recently argued to exist in a biased graphene bilayer, but with different topological properties. Such a `topological' exciton condensate (TEC) exhibits a host of unusual properties; the most interesting among them is the fractional charge +-e/2 carried by a singly qu…
The Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons continues to garner immense attention as a prototypical example for observing emergent properties from many-body quantum effects. In particular, Titanium Diselenide (TiSe$_2$) is a promising candidate for realizing exciton condensation and was experimentally observed only very recently. Surprisingly, the condensate was experimentally characterized by a soft plasmon mode that only exists near the transition temperature, $T_c$, of the charge density wave (CDW). Here, we characterize and analyze the experimental spectra using linear-response time-depende…
Using Diffusion Monte Carlo simulations we have investigated the ground state of a symmetric electron-hole bilayer and determined its phase diagram at T=0. We find clear evidence of an excitonic condensate, whose stability however is affected by in-layer electronic correlation. This stabilizes the electron-hole plasma at large values of the density or inter-layer distance, and the Wigner crystal at low density and large distance. We have also estimated pair correlation functions and low order density matrices, to give a microscopic characterization of correlations, as well as to try and estima…
We study Frenkel exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensation in a two-dimensional defect-free triangular photonic crystal with an organic semiconductor active medium containing bound excitons with dipole moments oriented perpendicular to the layers. We find photonic Bloch modes of the structure and consider their strong coupling regime with the excitonic component. Using the Gross- Pitaevskii equation for exciton polaritons and the Boltzmann equation for the external exciton reservoir, we demonstrate the formation of condensate at the points in reciprocal space where photon group velocity equ…
Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity is a macroscopically populated coherent quantum state subject to concurrent pumping and decay. Debates about the fundamental nature of the condensed phase in this open quantum system still persist. Here, we gain a new insight into the spontaneous condensation process by imaging long-lifetime exciton polaritons in a high-quality inorganic microcavity in the single-shot optical excitation regime, without averaging over multiple condensate realisations. In this highly non-stationary regime, a condensate is strongly infl…
Two-photon absorption (TPA) allows accessing dark states of matter otherwise inaccessible to light, which serve as important building blocks for quantum information processing. In a semiconductor microcavity, TPA driven condensation of strongly-coupled light-matter exciton-polaritons can enable new solid-state quantum simulations of dark state-condensate interactions, and was predicted to stimulate THz emission. Here, we report the first observation of two-photon pumped polariton condensation, demonstrated by angle-resolved photoluminescence in a GaAs-based microcavity. TPA is evidenced in the…
We theoretically investigate the possibility of excitonic condensation in a system of two graphene monolayers separated by an insulator, in which electrons and holes in the layers are induced by external gates. In contrast to the recent studies of this system, we take into account the screening of the interlayer Coulomb interaction by the carriers in the layers, and this drastically changes the result. Due to a large number of electron species in the system (two projections of spin, two valleys, and two layers) and to the suppression of backscattering in graphene, the maximum possible strength…
