The possibility of excitonic condensation in a recently proposed electrically biased double-layer graphene system is studied theoretically. The main emphasis is put on obtaining a reliable analytical estimate for the transition temperature into the excitonic state. As in a double-layer graphene system the total number of fermionic "flavors" is equal to N=8 due to two projections of spin, two valleys, and two layers, the large-$N$ approximation appears to be especially suitable for theoretical investigation of the system. On the other hand, the large number of flavors makes screening of the bare Coulomb interactions very efficient, which, together with the suppression of backscattering in graphene, leads to an extremely low energy of the excitonic condensation. It is shown that the effect of screening on the excitonic pairing is just as strong in the excitonic state as it is in the normal state. As a result, the value of the excitonic gap $\De$ is found to be in full agreement with the previously obtained estimate for the mean-field transition temperature $T_c$, the maximum possible value $Δ^{\rm max},T_c^{\rm max}\sim 10^{-7} ε_F$ ($ε_F$ is the Fermi energy) of both being in $ 1{\rm mK}$ range for a perfectly clean system. This proves that the energy scale $\sim 10^{-7} ε_F$ really sets the upper bound for the transition temperature and invalidates the recently expressed conjecture about the high-temperature first-order transition into the excitonic state. These findings suggest that, unfortunately, the excitonic condensation in graphene double-layers can hardly be realized experimentally.
The condensation of electron-hole (e-h) pairs is studied at zero temperature and in the presence of a weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the inversion-layer quantum wells. Under realistic conditions, a perturbative SOC can have observable effects in the order parameter of the experimentally long-searched-for excitonic condensate. Firstly, the fermion exchange symmetry is absent for the e-h pairs indicating a counterexample to the known classification schemes of fermion pairing. With the lack of fermion exchange, the condensate spin has no definite parity. Additionally, the excitonic SOC breaks …
Using Diffusion Monte Carlo simulations we have investigated the ground state of a symmetric electron-hole bilayer and determined its phase diagram at T=0. We find clear evidence of an excitonic condensate, whose stability however is affected by in-layer electronic correlation. This stabilizes the electron-hole plasma at large values of the density or inter-layer distance, and the Wigner crystal at low density and large distance. We have also estimated pair correlation functions and low order density matrices, to give a microscopic characterization of correlations, as well as to try and estima…
Graphene, a single sheet of graphite with honeycomb lattice structure, has massless carriers with tunable density and polarity. We investigate the ground state phase diagram of two graphene sheets (embedded in a dielectric) separated by distance $d$ where the top layer has electrons and the bottom layer has holes, using mean-field theory. We find that a uniform excitonic condensate occurs over a large range of carrier densities and is weakly dependent on the relative orientation of the two sheets. We obtain the excitonic gap, quasiparticle energy and the density of states. We show that both, t…
We study the orbital diamagnetic susceptibility in excitonic condensation phase using the meanfield approximation for a two-band model defined on a square lattice. We find that, in semiconductors, the excitonic condensation acquires a finite diamagnetic susceptibility due to spontaneous hybridization between the valence and the conduction bands, whereas in semimetals, the diamagnetic susceptibility in the normal phase is suppressed by the excitonic condensation. We also study the orbital diamagnetic and Pauli paramagnetic susceptibilities of Ta2NiSe5 using a two-dimensional three-band model an…
We theoretically investigate the possibility of excitonic condensation in a system of two graphene monolayers separated by an insulator, in which electrons and holes in the layers are induced by external gates. In contrast to the recent studies of this system, we take into account the screening of the interlayer Coulomb interaction by the carriers in the layers, and this drastically changes the result. Due to a large number of electron species in the system (two projections of spin, two valleys, and two layers) and to the suppression of backscattering in graphene, the maximum possible strength…
We suggest that physics underlying the recently observed removal of sublattice and spin degeneracies in graphene in a strong magnetic field describes a phase transition connected with the generation of excitonic and spin gaps. The strong-coupling regime is described using a phenomenological model with enhanced Zeeman splitting (spin gap) and excitonic gaps. The experimental form of the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ with the additional $ν= 0, \pm 1$ plateaus is reproduced. The form of $σ_{xy}$ in the case of a strong-coupling regime with no enhanced Zeeman splitting is also discussed.
A sufficiently strong Coulomb interaction may open an excitonic fermion gap and thus drive a semimetal-insulator transition in graphene. In this paper, we study the Eliashberg theory of excitonic transition by coupling the fermion gap equation self-consistently to the equation of vacuum polarization function. Including the fermion gap into polarization function increases the effective strength of Coulomb interaction because it reduces the screening effects due to the collective particle-hole excitations. Although this procedure does not change the critical point, it leads to a significant enha…
The stability of the excitonic condensation at low temperature driven by a coupling of electrons to vibrational degrees of freedom in semimetal two-dimensional electronic system is discussed. In the framework of the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation, we derive a set of equations to determine both the excitonic condensate order parameter and lattice displacement self-consistently. By lowering temperature we find out a semimetal-insulator transition in the system if the coupling is large enough. The insulating state typifies an excitonic condensation accompanied by a finite lattice distort…
We predict the formation and superfluidity of polaritons in an optical microcavity formed by excitons in gapped graphene embedded there and microcavity photons. The Rabi splitting related to the creation of an exciton in a graphene layer in the presence of the band gap is obtained. The analysis of collective excitations as well as the sound velocity is presented. We show that the superfluid density and temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition are decreasing functions of the energy gap.
The microscopic quantum interference associated with excitonic condensation in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ is studied in the BCS-type mean-field approximation. We show that in ultrasonic attenuation the coherence peak appears just below the transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ whereas in NMR spin-lattice relaxation the rate rapidly decreases below $T_{\rm c}$; these observations can offer a crucial experimental test for the validity of the excitonic condensation scenario in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. We also show that the excitonic condensation manifests itself in a jump of the heat capacity at $T_{\rm c}$ as well as i…
We consider a two-orbital Hubbard model with Hund coupling and crystal-field splitting and show that in the vicinity of the high-spin/low-spin transition, crystal-field quenches can induce an excitonic condensation at initial temperatures above the highest ordering temperature in equilibrium. This condensation is the effect of an increase in the spin entropy and an associated cooling of the effective electronic temperature. We identify a dynamical phase transition and show that such quenches can result in long-lived nonthermal excitonic condensates which have no analogue in the equilibrium pha…
We study the disorder effect on the excitonic gap generation caused by strong Coulomb interaction in graphene. By solving the self-consistently coupled equations of dynamical fermion gap $m$ and disorder scattering rate $Γ$, we found a critical line on the plane of interaction strength $λ$ and disorder strength $g$. The phase diagram is divided into two regions: in the region with large $λ$ and small $g$, $m \neq 0$ and $Γ= 0$; in the other region, $m = 0$ and $Γ\neq 0$ for nonzero $g$. In particular, there is no coexistence of finite fermion gap and finite scattering rate. These results imply…
The competing ground states of bilayer graphene are studied by applying renormalization group techniques to a bilayer honeycomb lattice with nearest neighbor hopping. In the absence of interactions, the Fermi surface of this model at half-filling consists of two nodal points with momenta $\mathbf{K}$, $\mathbf{K}'$, where the conduction band and valence band touch each other, yielding a semi-metal. Since near these two points the energy dispersion is quadratic with perfect particle-hole symmetry, excitonic instabilities are inevitable if inter-band interactions are present. Using a perturbativ…
The strong long-range Coulomb interaction between massless Dirac fermions in graphene can drive a semimetal-insulator transition. We show that this transition is strongly suppressed when the Coulomb interaction is screened by such effects as disorder, thermal fluctuation, doping, and finite volume. It is completely suppressed once the screening factor $μ$ is beyond a threshold $μ_{c}$ even for infinitely strong coupling. However, such transition is still possible if there is an additional strong contact four-fermion interaction. The differences between screened and contact interactions are als…
We show that finite temperature variational cluster approximation (VCA) calculations on an extended Falicov-Kimball model can reproduce angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results on Ta2NiSe5 across a semiconductor-to-semiconductor structural phase transition at 325 K. We demonstrate that the characteristic temperature dependence of the flat-top valence band observed by ARPES is reproduced by the VCA calculation on the realistic model for an excitonic insulator only when the strong excitonic fluctuation is taken into account. The present calculations indicate that Ta2NiSe5 falls …
We have considered the AB-stacked bilayer graphene Josephson junction. The bilayers are supposed to be in the charge equilibrium states and at the half-filling in each of the electronic layers of the construction and at each value of the external gate. By considering the interacting bilayers in both sides of the junction and by taking into account both intralayer and interlayer Coulomb interaction effects, we have calculated the normal and excitonic tunnel currents through the junction. The electronic band renormalizations have been taken into account, due to the excitonic pairing effects and …
We investigate the excitonic instability in the theory of Dirac fermions in graphene with long-range Coulomb interaction. We analyze the electron-hole vertex relevant for exciton condensation in the ladder approximation, showing that it blows up at a critical value of the interaction strength α= e^2/4πv_F sensitive to further many-body corrections. Under static screening of the interaction, we find that taking into account electron self-energy corrections increases the critical coupling to α_c \approx 2.09, for a number N = 4 of two-component Dirac fermions. We show that the dynamical screenin…
The idea of exciton condensation in solids was introduced in 1960's with the analogy to superconductivity in mind. While exciton supercurrents have been realized only in artificial quantum-well structures so far, the application of the concept of excitonic condensation to bulk solids leads to a rich spectrum of thermodynamic phases with diverse physical properties. In this review we discuss recent developments in the theory of exciton condensation in systems described by Hubbard-type models. In particular, we focus on the connections to their various strong-coupling limits that have been studi…
In the present work, we consider the excitonic effects in the twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) within the rotated bilayer Hubbard model. Both, intralayer and interlayer Coulomb interactions have been considered and the half-filling condition is imposed for the electronic densities is both layers of the bilayer. We calculate the excitonic pairing gap parameter and the chemical potential for different twist angles and different values of the interlayer Coulomb interaction parameter. Furthermore, we show the appearance of the electronic flat bands in the electronic band structure, mediated by the …
By a combination of Hartree-Fock simulations, exact diagonalization, and perturbative calculations, we investigate the ground-state properties of disorder-free circular quantum dots formed in a graphene monolayer. Taking the reference chemical potential at the Dirac point, we study N \leq 15 interacting particles, where the fine structure constant α parametrizes the Coulomb interaction. We explore three different theoretical concepts: (i) Sucher's positive projection ("no-pair") approach, (ii) a more general Hamiltonian conserving both N and the number of additional electron-hole pairs, and (i…
In this paper, we consider the spectral properties of the bilayer graphene with the local excitonic pairing interaction between the electrons and holes. We consider the generalized Hubbard model, which includes both intralayer and interlayer Coulomb interaction parameters. The solution of the excitonic gap parameter is used to calculate the electronic band structure, single-particle spectral functions, the hybridization gap, and the excitonic coherence length in the bilayer graphene. We show that the local interlayer Coulomb interaction is responsible for the semimetal-semiconductor transition…
We study the excitonic insulating (EI) phase in the two-band Hubbard models on the Penrose tiling. Performing the real-space mean-field calculations systematically, we obtain the ground state phase diagrams for the vertex and center models. We find that, in some regimes, the stable EI phase is induced by small interband interactions. We argue that this originates from the electron-hole pairing for the completely or nearly degenerate states, which are characteristic of the Penrose tiling. We also study spatial distribution of the order parameter, mapping it to the perpendicular space.
We analyze the Coulomb interacting problem in undoped graphene layers by using an excitonic variational ansatz. By minimizing the energy, we derive a gap equation which reproduces and extends known results. We show that a full treatment of the exchange term, which includes the renormalization of the Fermi velocity, tends to suppress the phase transition by increasing the critical coupling at which the excitonic instability takes place.
We study the electron-hole pair (or excitonic) condensation in the extended Falicov-Kimball model at finite temperatures based on the cluster mean-field-theory approach, where we make the grand canonical exact-diagonalization analysis of small clusters using the sine-square deformation function. We thus calculate the ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams of the model, as well as its optical conductivity and single-particle spectra, thereby clarifying how the preformed pair states appear in the strong-coupling regime of excitonic insulators. We compare our results with experiment o…
Trilayer graphene is receiving an increasing level of attention due to its stacking--dependent magnetoelectric and optoelectric properties, and its more robust ferromagnetism relative to monolayer and bilayer variants. Additionally, rhombohedral stacked trilayer graphene presents the possibility of easily opening a gap via either an external electric field perpendicular to the layers, or via the application of external strain. In this paper, we consider an external electric field to open a bandgap in rhombohedral trilayer graphene and study the excitonic optical response of the system. This is…
We suggest that physics underlying the recently observed removal of sublattice and spin degeneracies in graphene in a strong magnetic field describes a phase transition connected with the generation of an excitonic gap. The experimental form of the Hall conductivity is reproduced and the main characteristics of the dynamics are described. Predictions of the behavior of the gap as a function of temperature and a gate voltage are made.
We use a combination of dynamical mean-field model calculations and LDA+U material specific calculations to investigate the low temperature phase transition in the compounds from the (Pr$_{1-y}$R$_y$)$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$CoO$_3$ (R=Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Y) family (PCCO). The transition, marked by a sharp peak in the specific heat, leads to an exponential increase of dc resistivity and a drop of the magnetic susceptibility, but no order parameter has been identified yet. We show that condensation of spin-triplet, atomic-size excitons provides a consistent explanation of the observed physics. In particul…
The density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) method and the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation with the charge-density-wave (CDW) instability are used to study a formation and condensation of excitonic bound states in the generalized Falicov-Kimball model. In particular, we examine effects of various factors, like the $f$-electron hopping, the local and nonlocal hybridization, as well as the increasing dimension of the system on the excitonic momentum distribution $N(q)$ and especially on the number of zero momentum excitons $N_0=N(q=0)$ in the condensate. It is found that the negative values …
We present the results of the Monte-Carlo simulation of graphene-like statistical model in terms of occupation numbers. We study the problem of the phase transition in graphene to an insulating phase. Only antiferromagnetic order parameter was studied at the moment by means of Hybrid Monte-Carlo process on the hexagonal lattice because of the sign problem for excitonic order parameter in fermionic determinant. Therefore we have studied the possibility of the phase transition to an excitonic phase by means of simplified Monte-Carlo process on the hexagonal lattice. We show that this phase, whic…
We consider the single-particle density of states (DOS) in the strongly correlated double layer (DL) system, without applied external fields. We demonstrate an unusual collapse effect in the spectrum of the normal single-particle spectral function at the particular high-symmetry point corresponding to the specific bunching-point solution of the chemical potential in the Frenkel channel. We show that at the low-temperature limit the anomalous spectral function obeys a concave like structure, which is directly related to the interlayer pair formation and condensation. We calculate the normal DOS…
We show theoretically that an undoped carbon nanotube might be an excitonic insulator---the long-sought phase of matter proposed by Keldysh, Kohn and others fifty years ago. We predict that the condensation of triplet excitons, driven by intervalley exchange interaction, spontaneously occurs at equilibrium if the tube radius is sufficiently small. The signatures of exciton condensation are its sizeable contributions to both the energy gap and the magnetic moment per electron. The increase of the gap might have already been measured, albeit with a different explanation [Deshpande et al., Scienc…
In the present paper, we consider the excitonic effects on the single particle normal density of states (DOS) in the bilayer graphene (BLG). The local interlayer Coulomb interaction is considered between the particles on the non-equivalent sublattice sites in different layers of the BLG. We show the presence of the excitonic shift of the neutrality point, even for the noninteracting layers. Furthermore, for the interacting layers, a very large asymmetry in the DOS structure is shown between the particle and hole channels. At the large values of the interlayer hopping amplitude, a large number …
We show that double-layer graphene (DLG), where an external potential induces an charge-imbalance between $n$- and $p$-type layers, is a promising candidate to realize an exciton condensate in equilibrium. To prove this phenomenon experimentally, we suggest to couple two DLG systems, separated by a thin insulating barrier, and measure the excitonic Josephson effect. For this purpose we calculate the ac and dc Josephson currents induced by tunneling excitons and show that the former only occurs when the gate potentials of the DLG systems differ, irrespective of the phase relationship of their e…
We propose experiments to observe Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and superfluidity of quasi-two-dimensional (2D) spatially indirect magnetoexcitons in bilayer graphene. The magnetic field $B$ is assumed strong. The energy spectrum of collective excitations, the sound spectrum as well as the effective magnetic mass of magnetoexcitons are presented in the strong magnetic field regime. The superfluid density $n_S$ and the temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition $T_c$ are shown to be increasing functions of the excitonic density $n$ but decreasing functions of $B$ and the interla…
We study the conditions for spontaneously generating an excitonic mass gap due to Coulomb interactions between anisotropic Dirac fermions in uniaxially strained graphene. The mass gap equation is realized as a self-consistent solution for the self-energy within the Hartree-Fock mean-field and static random phase approximations. It depends not only on momentum, due to the long-range nature of the interaction, but also on the velocity anisotropy caused by the presence of uniaxial strain. We solve the nonlinear integral equation self-consistently by performing large scale numerical calculations o…
Exciton condensation in a two-band Hubbard model on a square lattice is studied with variational Monte Carlo method. We show that the phase transition from an excitonic insulator to a band insulator is induced by increasing the interband Coulomb interaction. To examine the character of the exciton condensation, the exciton pair amplitudes both in $\bm{k}$-space and in real space are calculated. Using these quantities, we discuss the BCS-BEC crossover within the excitonic insulator phase.
Exciton condensation indicating the spontaneous formation of electron-hole pair can cause the phase transition from a semimetal to an excitonic insulator by gap opening at the Fermi surface. While the idea of this excitonic insulator has been proposed for decades, current theoretical approaches can only provide qualitative descriptions, and a quantitative predicting tool is still missing. To shed insight on this problem, we developed an $ab~initio$ method based on the finite-temperature density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory to compute the exciton condensation critical beh…
We use the LDA+U method to study the possibility of exciton condensation in perovskites of transition metals with $d^6$ electronic configuration such as LaCoO$_3$. For realistic interaction parameters we find several distinct solutions exhibiting spin-triplet exciton condensate, which gives rise to a local spin density distribution while the ordered moments are vanishingly small. Rhombohedral distortion from the ideal cubic structure suppresses the ordered state, contrary to the spin-orbit coupling which enhances the excitonic condensation energy. We explain the trends observed in the numerica…
In the present paper, we describe the antiferromagnetic and excitonic correlations in the AA-stacked bilayer graphene. We consider the applied external electric field potential to the structure which leads to the electronic charge imbalance between the layers in the system. By using the generalized two-layer Hubbard Hamiltonian, we consider different particle filling regimes in the layers. We calculate the important energy scales in the system and we establish the conditions for the appearance of the antiferromagnetic order in the system. We consider both large and small Coulomb interaction li…
Photoinduced dynamics in an excitonic insulator is studied theoretically by using a two-orbital Hubbard model on the square lattice where the excitonic phase in the ground state is characterized by the BCS-BEC crossover as a function of the interorbital Coulomb interaction. We consider the case where the order has a wave vector $Q=(0,0)$ and photoexcitation is introduced by a dipole transition. Within the mean-field approximation, we show that the excitonic order can be enhanced by the photoexcitation when the system is initially in the BEC regime of the excitonic phase, whereas it is reduced …
The Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnetoexcitonic polaritons in a graphene layer embedded in a optical microcavity in a high magnetic field $B$ is predicted. The essential property of this system (in contrast, e.g., to a quantum well embedded in a cavity) is stronger influence of magnetic field and weaker influence of disorder. A two-dimensional (2D) magnetoexcitonic polaritons gas is considered in a planar harmonic electric field potential applied to excitons or a parabolic shape of the optical cavity causing the trapping of microcavity photons. It is shown that the effective polariton…
Dirac electrons in graphene in the presence of Coulomb interactions of strength $β$ have been shown to display power law behavior with $β$ dependent exponents in certain correlation functions, which we call the mass susceptibilities of the system. In this work, we first discuss how this phenomenon is intimately related to the excitonic insulator transition, showing the explicit relation between the gap equation and response function approaches to this problem. We then provide a general computation of these mass susceptibilities in the ladder approximation, and present an analytical computation…
Slave rotor mean field (SRMF) theory is employed to study exciton formation in the extended Falicov-Kimball Model (EFKM). In this theory, charge and spin (or orbital) degrees are treated as independent degrees of freedom, coupled by a constraint. Using this formalism in single as well as cluster extension, we capture the effective many body scales beyond conventional mean-field theory. While the formation of exciton is favored by the interband hybridization $V$, it is strongly influenced by the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$. Beyond a critical hybridization, there is a condensation of exciton…
We present evidence of a drastic renormalization of the optical conductivity of graphene on SrTiO$_3$ resulting in almost full transparency in the ultraviolet region. These findings are attributed to resonant excitonic effects further supported by \emph{ab initio} Bethe-Salpeter equation and density functional theory calculations. The ($π$,$π$*)-orbitals of graphene and Ti-3\textit{d} $t_{2g}$ orbitals of SrTiO$_3$ are strongly hybridized and the interactions of electron-hole states residing in those orbitals play dominant role in the graphene optical conductivity. These interactions are prese…
The collective properties of different quasiparticles in various graphene based structures in high magnetic field have been studied. We predict Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and superfluidity of 2D spatially indirect magnetoexcitons in two-layer graphene. The superfluid density and the temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition are shown to be increasing functions of the excitonic density but decreasing functions of magnetic field and the interlayer separation. The instability of the ground state of the interacting 2D indirect magnetoexcitons in a slab of superlattice with alte…
In this paper, the effects of the external transverse magnetic field $B$ (perpendicular to the surface of the layers) on the electronic and excitonic properties are studied in the AA-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG). The effects of the Coulomb interactions and excitonic pairing have been taken into account and analyzed in detail within the bilayer Hubbard model. Both half-filling and partial filling regimes have been taken into account and the magnetic field dependence of a series of physical parameters was found. It is shown that the difference between the average electron concentrations in the…
At a large displacement field, in rhomboedral and Bernal-stacked graphene a normal paramagnetic state transitions to a correlated state. Recent experiments showed that such systems have several phase transitions as a function of the carrier density. The phase adjacent to a paramagnetic state has anomalously high resistance and reduced degeneracy of the Fermi sea. We show that both phenomena can be explained through a concept of partial intervalley exciton condensation: a fraction of particles condenses into excitons, and another forms an intervalley coherent Fermi liquid. The exciton part of t…
We show that the coupling to vibrational degrees of freedom can drive a semimetal excitonic-insulator quantum phase transition in an one-dimensional two-band f-c electron system at zero temperature. The insulating state typifies an excitonic condensate accompanied by a finite lattice distortion. Using the projector-based renormalization method we analyze the ground-state and spectral properties of the interacting electron-phonon model at half-filling. In particular we calculate the momentum dependence of the excitonic order parameter function and determine the finite critical interaction stren…
