Slave rotor mean field (SRMF) theory is employed to study exciton formation in the extended Falicov-Kimball Model (EFKM). In this theory, charge and spin (or orbital) degrees are treated as independent degrees of freedom, coupled by a constraint. Using this formalism in single as well as cluster extension, we capture the effective many body scales beyond conventional mean-field theory. While the formation of exciton is favored by the interband hybridization $V$, it is strongly influenced by the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$. Beyond a critical hybridization, there is a condensation of exciton, effectively giving rise to a crossover from metal to an excitonic insulator phase. The system goes from a metal to an excitonic insulating state, with a first order jump in the excitonic order parameter. Moreover, the behavior of excitonic averages differs from earlier results from Hartree-Fock mean-field theory. Low-$U$ results show that excitonic order parameter ($Δ$) is continuous across the transition both for single as well as two-site approximation. The transition changes to weakly first order in the intermediate $U$ for cluster case. On the other hand, large $U$ limit shows a continuous transition for cluster but remains first order in the single-site approximation. The slave rotor also indicates an excitonic metallic region in both single and cluster cases, while there is an orbital liquid in the insulating regime in the cluster theory. The $Δ-V$ graph shows step-like behavior when both the bands have the same parity. For cluster approximation, a second order to first order transition in $Δ-V$ is obtained by tuning the hopping parameter of the localized band.
The slave-rotor mean-field theory of Florens and Georges is generalized to the antiferromagnetic phase of the Hubbard model. An effective action consisting of a spin rotor and a fermion is derived and the corresponding saddle-point action is analyzed. Zero-temperature phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Hubbard model is presented. While the magnetic phase persists for all values of the Hubbard interaction U, the single-particle spectral function exhibits a crossover into an incoherent phase when the magnetic moment m (and the corresponding U values) lies within a certain window m_c < m < 1-…
The treatment of intershell interactions remains a major challenge in the theoretical description of strongly correlated materials. Most previous approaches considered the influence of intershell interactions at best in a static fashion, neglecting dynamic effects. In this work, we propose a slave-rotor method that goes beyond this approximation by incorporating the effect of intershell interactions in a dynamic manner. Our method is derived and implemented as a quantum impurity solver in the context of dynamical mean field theory and benchmarked on a two-orbital model system. The results from…
A new mean field theory is proposed for the Mott transition in the Hubbard model based on the slave rotor representation of the electron operator. This theory provides a better description of the role of the long range charge correlation in the Mott insulating state and offers a good estimation of the critical correlation strength for the Mott transition. We have constructed a new variational wave function for the Mott insulating state based on this new slave rotor mean field theory. We find this new variational wave function outperforms the conventional Jastrow type wave function with long ra…
Extending the U(1) slave-rotor representation\cite{FG_SRR} of the repulsive Hubbard model, we propose an SU(2) slave-rotor decomposition for the attractive Hubbard model, where the SU(2) slave-rotor variables represent order parameter fluctuations associated with superconductivity and charge density wave. This decomposition method allows us to modify the standard Hartree-Fock mean field theory by incorporating order parameter fluctuations on an equal footing. Deriving an effective SU(2) slave-rotor action from the attractive Hubbard model, and analyzing it at the mean field level, we demonstra…
The multiorbital Hubbard model is expressed in terms of quantum phase variables (``slave rotors'') conjugate to the local charge, and of auxiliary fermions, providing an economical representation of the Hilbert space of strongly correlated systems. When the phase variables are treated in a local mean-field manner, similar results to the dynamical mean-field theory are obtained, namely a Brinkman-Rice transition at commensurate fillings together with a ``preformed'' Mott gap in the single-particle density of states. The slave- rotor formalism allows to go beyond the local description and take i…
We study how to incorporate Mott physics in the BCS-type superconductor, motivated from the fact that high $T_c$ superconductivity results from a Mott insulator via hole doping. The U(1) slave-rotor representation was proposed to take local density fluctuations into account non-perturbatively, describing the Mott-Hubbard transition at half filling. Since this decomposition cannot control local pairing fluctuations, the U(1) slave-rotor representation does not give a satisfactory treatment for charge fluctuations. Extending the U(1) slave-rotor representation, we introduce an SU(2) slave-rotor …
In this paper, we develop a new type of slave particle method which is similar to the slave rotor model except that the quantum rotor is substituted by a spin one slave particle. The spin-one slave particle itself can be represented in terms of Schwinger bosons/fermions. This approach is more conveniently applicable to the strongly correlated Hamiltonians with on-site Hubbard interaction and resolves the limitations of using the slave rotor model as well as the Anderson-Zou slave particle technique. For instance, the mean-field parameters of the slave spin method do not vanish above the Mott t…
Recent studies of dynamical screening of the electronic Coulomb interactions in solids have revived interest in lattice models of correlated fermions coupled to bosonic degrees of freedom (Hubbard-Holstein-type models). We propose a dynamical mean-field-based approach to dynamically screened Coulomb interactions. In the effective Anderson-Holstein model, a transformation to slave rotors [S. Florens and A. Georges, Phys. Rev. B 66, 165111 (2002)] is performed to decouple the dynamical part of the interaction. This transformation allows for a systematic derivation and analysis of recently introd…
We introduce a representation of electron operators as a product of a spin-carry ing fermion and of a phase variable dual to the total charge (slave quantum rotor). Based on this representation, a new method is proposed for solving multi-orbital Anderson quantum impurity models at finite interaction strength U. It consists in a set of coupled integral equations for the auxiliary field Green's functions, which can be derived from a controlled saddle-point in the limit of a large number of field components. In contrast to some finite-U extensions of the non-crossing approximation, the new method…
We introduce a set of generalized slave-particle models for extended Hubbard models that treat localized electronic correlations using slave-boson decompositions. Our models automatically include two slave-particle methods of recent interest, the slave-rotor and slave-spin methods, as well as a ladder of new intermediate models where one can choose which of the electronic degrees of freedom (e.g., spin or orbital labels) are treated as correlated degrees of freedom by the slave bosons. In addition, our method removes the aberrant behavior of the slave-rotor model at weak correlation strength b…
We develop U(1) slave spin-rotor theory, suggesting a metal-metal transition from Landau's Fermi-liquid state to a bad metal phase, as U(1) slave charge-rotor theory [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 035114 (2004)] describes a metal-insulator transition from Landau's Fermi-liquid state to a spin-liquid phase. U(1) slave spin-rotor formulation allows us to generalize Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory for ferromagnetic quantum phase transitions, replacing Landau's Fermi-liquid state with an incoherent metallic phase. As a result, we argue that localized magnetic moments emerge to govern quantum critical physics …
We propose a mechanism of superconductivity from purely repulsive interactions in the strong coupling regime, where the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) mechanism such as the spin-fluctuation approach is difficult to apply. Based on the SU(2) slave-rotor representation of the Hubbard model, we find that the single energy scale for the amplitude formation of Cooper pairs and their phase coherence is separated into two energy scales, allowing the so called pseudogap state where such Cooper pairs are coherent locally but not globally, interpreted as realization of the density-phase uncertainty pri…
Building on work by Florens and Georges, we formulate and study a self-consistent slave rotor mean field theory for strongly correlated systems. This approach views the electron, in the strong correlation regime, as a composite of a neutral spinon and a charged rotor field. We solve the coupled spinon-rotor model self-consistently using a cluster mean field theory for the rotors and various ansatzes for the spinon ground state. We illustrate this approach with a number of examples relevant to ongoing experiments in strongly correlated electronic systems such as: (i) the phase diagram of the is…
We investigate the correlated electrons in the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene by using the slave-rotor mean-field theory. Owing to the extended figure of Wannier orbitals, we study the two-orbital cluster Hubbard model with spin-valley fourfold degeneracy, focusing around half filling of valence bands below the neutrality point. The theory predicts multiple Mott insulator phases at fractional fillings not only for integer charges per moir{é} site, and it demonstrates that long-range electron hopping is highly suppressed because multiple-charge excitations are induced. Furthermore, the Ke…
We study equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of electron-phonon systems described by the Hubbard-Holstein model using the dynamical mean-field theory. In equilibrium, we benchmark the results for impurity solvers based on the one-crossing approximation and slave-rotor approximation against non-perturbative numerical renormalization group reference data. We also examine how well the low energy properties of the electron-boson coupled systems can be reproduced by an effective static electron-electron interaction. The one-crossing and slave-rotor approximations are then used to simulate ins…
Motivated by the debate of spin-density-wave (SDW) versus local-moment (LM) picture in the iron-based superconducting (FeSC) materials, we consider a two-band orbital-symmetric Hubbard model in which there is robust Fermi surface nesting at $(π,0)$. We obtain the phase diagram of such system by a mean-field slave-rotor approach, in which the Fermi surface nesting and the SDW order are explicitly taken into account via a natural separation of scale between the Hund's coupling and the Coulomb interaction. We find that for a sizable range of Hund's coupling the Mott transition acquires a strong f…
In order to obtain a reasonable phase diagram involving hole-pair condensation for hole-doped cuprate systems, we propose a modified t-J Hamiltonian in which a Coulomb repulsion term between nearest neighbor holes is considered. We show from the investigation of free energy that holon pair condensation can occur as a result of symmetry breaking. In addition, we introduce a possibility of supersymmetry condition at $T=0K$ in the intermediate region between the antiferromagnetic phase and the superconducting phase.
Based on the SO(2)-invariant slave-boson scheme, the static charge, orbital, and excitonic susceptibilities in the extended Falicov-Kimball model are calculated. Analyzing the phase without long-range order we find instabilities towards charge order, orbital order, and the excitonic insulator (EI) phase. The instability towards the EI is in agreement with the saddle-point phase diagram. We also evaluate the dynamic excitonic susceptibility, which allows the investigation of uncondensed excitons. We find qualitatively different features of the exciton dispersion at the semimetal-EI and at the s…
We investigate the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with intrinsic spin orbit interactions as a paradigm for two-dimensional topological band insulators in the presence of interactions. Applying a combination of Hartree-Fock theory, slave-rotor techniques, and topological arguments, we show that the topological band insulating phase persists up to quite strong interactions. Then we apply the slave-rotor mean-field theory and find a Mott transition at which the charge degrees of freedom become localized on the lattice sites. The spin degrees of freedom, however, are still described by the…
The long-standing issue of the competition between the magnetic field and the Kondo effect, favoring, respectively, triplet and singlet ground states is addressed using a cluster slave-rotor mean field theory for the Hubbard model and its spin-correlated, spin-frustrated extensions in 2 dimension. The metamagnetic jump is established and compared with earlier results of dynamical mean-field theory. The present approach also reproduces the emergent super-exchange energy scale in the insulating side. A scaling is found for the critical Zeeman field in terms of the intrinsic coherence scale just …
We investigate a possibility of holon pairing for bose condensation based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation obtained from the use of the t-J Hamiltonians of both t he U(1) and SU(2) slave-boson symmetries. It is shown that the vertex function contributed from ladder diagram series involving holon-holon scattering channel in the Bethe-Salpeter equation leads to a singular behavior at a critical temperature at each hole doping concentration, showing the instability of the normal state against holon pairing. We find that the holon pairing instability occurs only in a limited range of hole doping, by…
We study the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model both at half-filling and away from half-filling using a slave-boson mean-field approach at zero temperature. We obtain a phase diagram at half-filling and discuss its connection to recent results from quantum Monte Carlo, slave-rotor, and $Z_2$ mean-field studies. In particular, we find a small window in parameter space where a spin liquid phase with gapped spin and charge excitations reside. Upon doping, we show the spin liquid state becomes a superconducting state by explicitly calculating the singlet pairing order parameters. Interestingly, we find an "o…
Using the t-J Hamiltonian of U(1) slave-boson symmetry, bose condensation is discussed by showing the occurrence of symmetry breaking in the hole doped high $T_c$ cuprates. The symmetry breaking is shown to take place with the d-wave hole pairing, but not with the s-wave hole pairing. Based on a derived supersymmetry Hamiltonian we find that there exists a possibility of supersymmetry conditions in association with the pairing order parameters of both spinon and holon.
A mean-field treatment of the phase string effect in the $t-J$ model is presented. Such a theory is able to unite the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase at half-filling and metallic phase at finite doping within a single theoretical framework. We find that the low-temperature occurrence of the AF long range ordering (AFLRO) at half-filling and superconducting condensation in metallic phase are all due to Bose condensations of spinons and holons, respectively, on the top of a spin background described by bosonic resonating-valence-bond (RVB) pairing. The fact that both spinon and holon here are boson…
By constructing an effective model based on recently calculated \emph{ab }initio bare interaction parameters, we study the phase diagram of alkali doped fullerides as a function of temperature and internal pressure. We use a slave-rotor mean-field approach at the weak and intermediate coupling limits and a variational mean-field approach at the strong coupling limit, and find a good agreement with experimental phase diagram. We explain the unified description of the phase diagram including the proximity of s-wave superconducting state and the Mott-insulating state, and the existence of Jahn-Te…
For the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model on the two-dimensional square lattice, two third nearest neighbor hoppings which preserve chiral symmetry are introduced. Like the case of one dimension, the longer-range hopping can drive topological transitions and leads to the larger topological invariant (vectored Berry phase for the two dimensional SSH model). We obtain the phase boundaries and topological phase diagrams from the winding pattern of $ρ(k_l)$ of the Bloch Hamiltonian. Effects of correlations on the extended two dimensional SSH model are also investigated. The correlation shifts the p…
We study the three-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory of a CP$^1$ spinon (Schwinger boson) field and a Higgs field. It is a bosonic $t$-$J$ model in slave-particle representation, describing the antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg spin model with doped bosonic holes expressed by the Higgs field. The spinon coupling term of the action favors AF long-range order, whereas the holon hopping term in the ferromagnetic channel favors Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of holons. We investigate the phase structure by means of Monte-Carlo simulations and study an interplay of AF order and BEC of holes. …
Moiré super-potentials in two-dimensional materials allow unprecedented control of the ratio between kinetic and interaction energy. By this, they pave the way to study a wide variety of strongly correlated physics under a new light. In particular, the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising candidate "quantum simulators" of the Hubbard model on a triangular lattice. Indeed, Mott and generalized Wigner crystals have been observed in such devices. Here we theoretically propose to extend this model into the multi-orbital regime by focusing on electron doped systems at filling highe…
We study the three-dimensional bosonic t-J model, i.e., the t-J model of "bosonic electrons" at finite temperatures. This model describes a system of cold bosonic atoms with two species in an optical lattice. The model is derived from the Hubbard model for very large on-site repulsive interaction between bosons of same species (hard-core nature) and also strong correlations between different species. The operator B_{xσ} for an atom at the site x with a two-component (pseudo-) spin σ(=1,2) is treated as a hard-core boson operator, and represented by a composite of two slave particles; a spinon …
The Gaussian fluctuations in slave-boson mean-field theory of $t-J$ model is analyzed in this paper in the low-doping regime where the superconducting to normal (pseudo-gap phase) transition is driven by vanishing of bose-condensation amplitude. By eliminating the boson and constraint fields exactly in the linear response regime we show that the Gaussian theory describes a Fermi liquid superconductor where the superconducting to normal transition is actually a spin-charge separation transition characterized by a change of Landau parameter from $F_1>-1$ in the superconducting phase to $F_1=-1$ …

We solve the problem of a magnetic impurity coupled to a U(1) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surface and compute the impurity spectral function. Using the slave rotor mean field approach combined with gauge field fluctuations, we find that a peak located at the top of the lower Hubbard band and one at the bottom of the upper Hubbard band can emerge in the impurity spectral function. The peaks at the Hubbard band edges arise from the gauge field fluctuations induced spinon chargon binding inside the spinon Kondo screening cloud of the magnetic impurity. For a magnetic impurity embedded i…
We investigate, firstly, the effects of the Rashba SOC on the band structrue of the Kane-Mele model. The competition between the Rashba SOC and the intrinsic SOC can lead to the rich phenomenology. The Rashba SOC can drive the indirect and direct energy gap to close successively, but maintain the band touching between the valence band and the conduction band when the Rashba SOC is large enough to dominant the competition. We find that these touching points are located at $K$ and $K^{\prime}$ or/and some $2π/3$ rotationally symmetric points around $K$ and $K^{\prime}$ in the Brillouin zone. The…

We address how the nature of linearly dispersing edge states of two dimensional (2D) topological insulators evolves with increasing electron-electron correlation engendered by a Hubbard like on-site repulsion $U$ in finite ribbons of two models of topological band insulators. Using an inhomogeneous cluster slave rotor mean-field method developed here, we show that electronic correlations drive the topologically nontrivial phase into a Mott insulating phase via two different routes. In a synchronous transition, the entire ribbon attains a Mott insulating state at one critical $U$ that depends w…
A triangular lattice with onsite Coulomb interaction $U$ present only on one sub-lattice, is periodically driven by electromagnetic field with a frequency $Ω\gg (t,~U)$ at half filling. In this high frequency limit, the electromagnetic vector potential, with an amplitude $A$, modifies the bare hopping and generates new next nearest neighbour hopping parameters. For $U=0$, the driving acts like an emergent intrinsic spin-orbit coupling term and stabilises three dispersive bands with the lower and upper bands having non zero Chern numbers. Within a slave rotor mean field theory, we show that whi…
Motivated by experimental and theoretical interest in realizing multipolar orders in $d$-orbital materials, we discuss the quantum magnetism of $J\!=\!2$ ions which can be realized in spin-orbit coupled oxides with $5d^2$ transition metal ions. Based on the crystal field environment, we argue for a splitting of the $J\!=\!2$ multiplet, leading to a low lying non-Kramers doublet which hosts quadrupolar and octupolar moments. We discuss a microscopic mechanism whereby the combined perturbative effects of orbital repulsion and antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin interactions leads to ferro-octupola…
Recently several moiré super-lattice systems are proposed to host nearly flat $\pm$ Chern bands: the bands of the two valleys have opposite Chern numbers. In these systems the charge of each valley is separately conserved. For the $C=\pm 1$ case, in the perfect flat band limit, the system can be mapped to two Landau levels from opposite magnetic fields. Motivated by these promising experimental realizations, we consider a quantum Hall bilayers from opposite magnetic fields close to the filling $ν_T=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}$. We add inter-layer repulsive interaction starting from two decoupled C…
