We investigate the correlated electrons in the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene by using the slave-rotor mean-field theory. Owing to the extended figure of Wannier orbitals, we study the two-orbital cluster Hubbard model with spin-valley fourfold degeneracy, focusing around half filling of valence bands below the neutrality point. The theory predicts multiple Mott insulator phases at fractional fillings not only for integer charges per moir{é} site, and it demonstrates that long-range electron hopping is highly suppressed because multiple-charge excitations are induced. Furthermore, the Kekul{é} valence bond order is investigated and is found to extend the Mott insulator phases to occupy a finite doping region. Adjacent to Mott insulator phases, superconducting domes emerges by virtue of spin-valley fluctuations. This work has provided a primal understanding and interesting phenomena of the correlated system, and for its novel interaction the model might produce plenty of possibilities waiting to be explored.
Extending the U(1) slave-rotor representation\cite{FG_SRR} of the repulsive Hubbard model, we propose an SU(2) slave-rotor decomposition for the attractive Hubbard model, where the SU(2) slave-rotor variables represent order parameter fluctuations associated with superconductivity and charge density wave. This decomposition method allows us to modify the standard Hartree-Fock mean field theory by incorporating order parameter fluctuations on an equal footing. Deriving an effective SU(2) slave-rotor action from the attractive Hubbard model, and analyzing it at the mean field level, we demonstra…
We study how to incorporate Mott physics in the BCS-type superconductor, motivated from the fact that high $T_c$ superconductivity results from a Mott insulator via hole doping. The U(1) slave-rotor representation was proposed to take local density fluctuations into account non-perturbatively, describing the Mott-Hubbard transition at half filling. Since this decomposition cannot control local pairing fluctuations, the U(1) slave-rotor representation does not give a satisfactory treatment for charge fluctuations. Extending the U(1) slave-rotor representation, we introduce an SU(2) slave-rotor …
We propose a mechanism of superconductivity from purely repulsive interactions in the strong coupling regime, where the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) mechanism such as the spin-fluctuation approach is difficult to apply. Based on the SU(2) slave-rotor representation of the Hubbard model, we find that the single energy scale for the amplitude formation of Cooper pairs and their phase coherence is separated into two energy scales, allowing the so called pseudogap state where such Cooper pairs are coherent locally but not globally, interpreted as realization of the density-phase uncertainty pri…
Building on work by Florens and Georges, we formulate and study a self-consistent slave rotor mean field theory for strongly correlated systems. This approach views the electron, in the strong correlation regime, as a composite of a neutral spinon and a charged rotor field. We solve the coupled spinon-rotor model self-consistently using a cluster mean field theory for the rotors and various ansatzes for the spinon ground state. We illustrate this approach with a number of examples relevant to ongoing experiments in strongly correlated electronic systems such as: (i) the phase diagram of the is…
The slave-rotor mean-field theory of Florens and Georges is generalized to the antiferromagnetic phase of the Hubbard model. An effective action consisting of a spin rotor and a fermion is derived and the corresponding saddle-point action is analyzed. Zero-temperature phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Hubbard model is presented. While the magnetic phase persists for all values of the Hubbard interaction U, the single-particle spectral function exhibits a crossover into an incoherent phase when the magnetic moment m (and the corresponding U values) lies within a certain window m_c < m < 1-…
The treatment of intershell interactions remains a major challenge in the theoretical description of strongly correlated materials. Most previous approaches considered the influence of intershell interactions at best in a static fashion, neglecting dynamic effects. In this work, we propose a slave-rotor method that goes beyond this approximation by incorporating the effect of intershell interactions in a dynamic manner. Our method is derived and implemented as a quantum impurity solver in the context of dynamical mean field theory and benchmarked on a two-orbital model system. The results from…
A new mean field theory is proposed for the Mott transition in the Hubbard model based on the slave rotor representation of the electron operator. This theory provides a better description of the role of the long range charge correlation in the Mott insulating state and offers a good estimation of the critical correlation strength for the Mott transition. We have constructed a new variational wave function for the Mott insulating state based on this new slave rotor mean field theory. We find this new variational wave function outperforms the conventional Jastrow type wave function with long ra…
Motivated by the debate of spin-density-wave (SDW) versus local-moment (LM) picture in the iron-based superconducting (FeSC) materials, we consider a two-band orbital-symmetric Hubbard model in which there is robust Fermi surface nesting at $(π,0)$. We obtain the phase diagram of such system by a mean-field slave-rotor approach, in which the Fermi surface nesting and the SDW order are explicitly taken into account via a natural separation of scale between the Hund's coupling and the Coulomb interaction. We find that for a sizable range of Hund's coupling the Mott transition acquires a strong f…
The multiorbital Hubbard model is expressed in terms of quantum phase variables (``slave rotors'') conjugate to the local charge, and of auxiliary fermions, providing an economical representation of the Hilbert space of strongly correlated systems. When the phase variables are treated in a local mean-field manner, similar results to the dynamical mean-field theory are obtained, namely a Brinkman-Rice transition at commensurate fillings together with a ``preformed'' Mott gap in the single-particle density of states. The slave- rotor formalism allows to go beyond the local description and take i…
In this paper, we develop a new type of slave particle method which is similar to the slave rotor model except that the quantum rotor is substituted by a spin one slave particle. The spin-one slave particle itself can be represented in terms of Schwinger bosons/fermions. This approach is more conveniently applicable to the strongly correlated Hamiltonians with on-site Hubbard interaction and resolves the limitations of using the slave rotor model as well as the Anderson-Zou slave particle technique. For instance, the mean-field parameters of the slave spin method do not vanish above the Mott t…
Recent studies of dynamical screening of the electronic Coulomb interactions in solids have revived interest in lattice models of correlated fermions coupled to bosonic degrees of freedom (Hubbard-Holstein-type models). We propose a dynamical mean-field-based approach to dynamically screened Coulomb interactions. In the effective Anderson-Holstein model, a transformation to slave rotors [S. Florens and A. Georges, Phys. Rev. B 66, 165111 (2002)] is performed to decouple the dynamical part of the interaction. This transformation allows for a systematic derivation and analysis of recently introd…
We introduce a representation of electron operators as a product of a spin-carry ing fermion and of a phase variable dual to the total charge (slave quantum rotor). Based on this representation, a new method is proposed for solving multi-orbital Anderson quantum impurity models at finite interaction strength U. It consists in a set of coupled integral equations for the auxiliary field Green's functions, which can be derived from a controlled saddle-point in the limit of a large number of field components. In contrast to some finite-U extensions of the non-crossing approximation, the new method…
We introduce a set of generalized slave-particle models for extended Hubbard models that treat localized electronic correlations using slave-boson decompositions. Our models automatically include two slave-particle methods of recent interest, the slave-rotor and slave-spin methods, as well as a ladder of new intermediate models where one can choose which of the electronic degrees of freedom (e.g., spin or orbital labels) are treated as correlated degrees of freedom by the slave bosons. In addition, our method removes the aberrant behavior of the slave-rotor model at weak correlation strength b…
Slave rotor mean field (SRMF) theory is employed to study exciton formation in the extended Falicov-Kimball Model (EFKM). In this theory, charge and spin (or orbital) degrees are treated as independent degrees of freedom, coupled by a constraint. Using this formalism in single as well as cluster extension, we capture the effective many body scales beyond conventional mean-field theory. While the formation of exciton is favored by the interband hybridization $V$, it is strongly influenced by the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$. Beyond a critical hybridization, there is a condensation of exciton…
We develop U(1) slave spin-rotor theory, suggesting a metal-metal transition from Landau's Fermi-liquid state to a bad metal phase, as U(1) slave charge-rotor theory [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 035114 (2004)] describes a metal-insulator transition from Landau's Fermi-liquid state to a spin-liquid phase. U(1) slave spin-rotor formulation allows us to generalize Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory for ferromagnetic quantum phase transitions, replacing Landau's Fermi-liquid state with an incoherent metallic phase. As a result, we argue that localized magnetic moments emerge to govern quantum critical physics …
We study the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model both at half-filling and away from half-filling using a slave-boson mean-field approach at zero temperature. We obtain a phase diagram at half-filling and discuss its connection to recent results from quantum Monte Carlo, slave-rotor, and $Z_2$ mean-field studies. In particular, we find a small window in parameter space where a spin liquid phase with gapped spin and charge excitations reside. Upon doping, we show the spin liquid state becomes a superconducting state by explicitly calculating the singlet pairing order parameters. Interestingly, we find an "o…
We study equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of electron-phonon systems described by the Hubbard-Holstein model using the dynamical mean-field theory. In equilibrium, we benchmark the results for impurity solvers based on the one-crossing approximation and slave-rotor approximation against non-perturbative numerical renormalization group reference data. We also examine how well the low energy properties of the electron-boson coupled systems can be reproduced by an effective static electron-electron interaction. The one-crossing and slave-rotor approximations are then used to simulate ins…
We investigate the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with intrinsic spin orbit interactions as a paradigm for two-dimensional topological band insulators in the presence of interactions. Applying a combination of Hartree-Fock theory, slave-rotor techniques, and topological arguments, we show that the topological band insulating phase persists up to quite strong interactions. Then we apply the slave-rotor mean-field theory and find a Mott transition at which the charge degrees of freedom become localized on the lattice sites. The spin degrees of freedom, however, are still described by the…
The long-standing issue of the competition between the magnetic field and the Kondo effect, favoring, respectively, triplet and singlet ground states is addressed using a cluster slave-rotor mean field theory for the Hubbard model and its spin-correlated, spin-frustrated extensions in 2 dimension. The metamagnetic jump is established and compared with earlier results of dynamical mean-field theory. The present approach also reproduces the emergent super-exchange energy scale in the insulating side. A scaling is found for the critical Zeeman field in terms of the intrinsic coherence scale just …
The degree of electron correlations remains a central issue in the iron-based superconductors. The parent iron pnictides are antiferromagnetic, and their bad-metal behavior has been interpreted in terms of proximity to a Mott transition. We study such a transition in multi-orbital models on modulated lattices containing an ordered pattern of iron vacancies, using a slave-rotor method. We show that the ordered vacancies lead to a band-narrowing, which pushes the system to the Mott insulator side. This effect is proposed to underlie the insulating behavior observed in the parent compounds of the…
In this paper, we investigate the topological Hubbard model - the spinful Haldane model with on-site interaction on honeycomb lattice with spin rotation symmetry by using slave-rotor approach and find that chiral spin liquid exists in such a correlated electron system of the intermediate coupling region. By considering the anyon nature of excitations, chiral spin liquid may be the ground state of the topological Hubbard model. The low energy physics is basically determined by its Chern-Simons gauge theory.
We calculate the electron spectral function for a spin-liquid with a spinon Fermi surface and a Dirac spin-liquid. Calculations are based upon the slave-rotor mean-field theory. We consider the effect of gauge fluctuations using a simple model and find the behavior is not strongly modified. The results, distinct from conventional Mott insulator or band theory predictions, suggest that measuring the spectral function e.g. via ARPES could help in the experimental verification and characterization of spin liquids.
Motivated by work on the bulk topological proximity effect and the topological bootstrap, we consider two coupled layers of quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators with opposite signs of time-reversal breaking, which leads to a trivial band insulator at half-filling. We study the impact of interactions in this model within slave rotor theory, which leads to a layer-selective Mott transition, resulting in a fractionalized quantum anomalous Hall insulator QAH$^*$ where a Chern band insulator coexists with a chiral spin liquid. We also compute the edge electron spectral function in the vicinity o…
We formulate a U(1) gauge theory of the Hubbard model in the slave-rotor representation. From this formalism it is argued that spin liquid phases may exist near the Mott transition in the Hubbard model on triangular and honeycomb lattices at half filling. The organic compound k-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3 is a good candidate for the spin liquid state on a triangular lattice. We predict a highly unusual temperature dependence for the thermal conductivity of this material.
We investigate the role of disorder in the Mott-Hubbard transition based on the slave-rotor representation of the Hubbard model, where an electron is decomposed into a fermionic spinon for a spin degree of freedom and a bosonic rotor (chargon) for a charge degree of freedom. In the absence of disorder the Mott-Hubbard insulator is assumed to be the spin liquid Mott insulator in terms of gapless spinons near the Fermi surface and gapped chargons interacting via U(1) gauge fields. We found that the Mott-Hubbard critical point becomes unstable as soon as disorder is turned on. As a result, a diso…
We propose the concept of "hybridization-switching induced Mott transition" which is relevant to a broad class of ABO$_3$ perovskite materials including BiNiO$_3$ and PbCrO$_3$ which feature extended $6s$ orbitals on the A-site cation (Bi or Pb), and A-O covalency induced ligand holes. Using {\it ab initio} electronic structure and slave rotor theory calculations, we show that such systems exhibit a breathing phonon driven A-site to oxygen hybridization-wave instability which conspires with strong correlations on the B-site transition metal ion (Ni or Cr) to induce a Mott insulator. These Mott…
Effects of electron correlations on a two dimensional quantum spin Hall (QSH) system are studied. We examine possible phases of a generalized Hubbard model on a bilayer honeycomb lattice with a spin-orbit coupling and short range electron-electron repulsions at half filling, based on the slave rotor mean-field theory. Besides the conventional QSH phase and a broken-symmetry insulating phase, we find a new phase, a fractionalized quantum spin Hall phase, where the QSH effect arises for fractionalized spinons which carry only spin but not charge. Experimental manifestations of the exotic phase a…
We study a bandwidth controlled Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) between a Fermi liquid metal and a quantum spin-liquid insulator at half-filling in three dimensions (3D). Using a slave rotor approach, and incorporating gauge field fluctuations, we find a continuous MIT and discuss the finite temperature crossovers around this critical point. We show that the specific heat C=T ln ln (1/T) at the MIT and argue that the electrical transport on the metallic side near the transition should exhibit a `conductivity minimum' as a function of temperature. A possible candidate to test these predic…
We study the repulsive Hubbard model on an anisotropic honeycomb lattice within a mean-field and a slave-rotor treatment. In addition to the known semi-metallic and band-insulating phases, obtained for very weak interactions, and the anti-ferromagnetic phase at large couplings, various insulating spin-liquid phases develop at intermediate couplings. Whereas some of these spin liquids have gapless spinon excitations, a gapped one occupies a large region of the phase diagram and becomes the predominant phase for large hopping anisotropies. This phase can be understood in terms of weakly-coupled …
By constructing an effective model based on recently calculated \emph{ab }initio bare interaction parameters, we study the phase diagram of alkali doped fullerides as a function of temperature and internal pressure. We use a slave-rotor mean-field approach at the weak and intermediate coupling limits and a variational mean-field approach at the strong coupling limit, and find a good agreement with experimental phase diagram. We explain the unified description of the phase diagram including the proximity of s-wave superconducting state and the Mott-insulating state, and the existence of Jahn-Te…
Dynamics of magnetic moments near the Mott metal-insulator transition is investigated by a combined slave-rotor and Dynamical Mean-Field Theory solution of the Hubbard model with additional fully-frustrated random Heisenberg couplings. In the paramagnetic Mott state, the spinon decomposition allows to generate a Sachdev-Ye spin liquid in place of the collection of independent local moments that typically occurs in the absence of magnetic correlations. Cooling down into the spin-liquid phase, the onset of deviations from pure Curie behavior in the spin susceptibility is found to be correlated t…
A slave rotor-Hartree Fock formalism is presented for studying the properties of the p-d model describing perovskite transition metal oxides, and a flexible and efficient numerical formalism is developed for its solution. The methodology is shown to yield, within an unified formulation, the significant aspects of the rare earth nickelate phase diagram, including the paramagnetic metal state observed for the LaNiO3 and the correct ground-state magnetic order of insulating compounds. It is then used to elucidate ground state changes occurring as morphology is varied from bulk to strained and un-…
The $\EtMeP$ and $\EtMeSb$ nearly triangular organic salts are distinguished from most other Pd[(dmit)$_2$] based salts, as they display valence bond and no long range order, respectively. Under pressure, a superconducting phase is revealed in EtMe$_3$P near the boundary of valence bond order. We use slave-rotor theory with an enlarged unit cell to study competition between uniform and broken translational symmetry states, offering a theoretical framework capturing the superconducting, valence bond order, spin liquid, and metallic phases on an isotropic triangular lattice. Our finite temperatu…
We study the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice with spin-dependent Kitaev-like hopping. Using the variational cluster approach, we identify five phases: a metallic phase, a non-coplanar chiral magnetic order, a $120^\circ$ magnetic order, a nonmagnetic insulator (NMI), and an interacting Chern insulator (CI) with a nonzero Chern number. The transition from CI to NMI is characterized by the change of the charge gap from an indirect band gap to a direct Mott gap. Based on the slave-rotor mean-field theory, the NMI phase is further suggested to be a gapless Mott insulator with a…
We calculate the phase diagram of the SU($N$) Hubbard model describing fermionic alkaline earth atoms in a square optical lattice with on-average one atom per site, using a slave-rotor mean-field approximation. We find that the chiral spin liquid predicted for $N\ge5$ and large interactions passes through a fractionalized state with a spinon Fermi surface as interactions are decreased before transitioning to a weakly interacting metal. We also show that by adding an artificial uniform magnetic field with flux per plaquette $2π/N$, the chiral spin liquid becomes the ground state for all $N\ge 3…
We propose a model for the multi-orbital material Sr$_2$CrOsO$_6$ (SCOO), an insulator with remarkable magnetic properties and the highest $T_c \simeq 725$ K among {\em all} perovskites with a net moment. We derive a new criterion for the Mott transition $(\widetilde{U}_{1} \widetilde{U}_{2})^{1/2}>2.5W$ using slave rotor mean field theory, where $W$ is the bandwidth and $\widetilde{U}_{1(2)}$ are the effective Coulomb interactions on Cr(Os) including Hund's coupling. We show that SCOO is a Mott insulator, where the large Cr $\widetilde{U}_{1}$ compensates for the small Os $\widetilde{U}_{2}$.…
Motivated by experiments on ultracold atoms which have realized the Haldane model for a Chern insulator, we consider its strongly correlated Mott limit with spin-$1/2$ fermions. We find that slave rotor mean field theory yields gapped or gapless chiral spin liquid Mott insulators. To study competing magnetic orders, we consider the strong coupling effective spin Hamiltonian which includes chiral three-spin exchange. We obtain its classical phase diagram, uncovering various chiral magnetic orders including tetrahedral, cone, and noncoplanar spiral states which can compete with putative chiral q…

We address how the nature of linearly dispersing edge states of two dimensional (2D) topological insulators evolves with increasing electron-electron correlation engendered by a Hubbard like on-site repulsion $U$ in finite ribbons of two models of topological band insulators. Using an inhomogeneous cluster slave rotor mean-field method developed here, we show that electronic correlations drive the topologically nontrivial phase into a Mott insulating phase via two different routes. In a synchronous transition, the entire ribbon attains a Mott insulating state at one critical $U$ that depends w…
We present a theory for the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the quantum-spin-liquid candidate material Na4Ir3O8. We consider an extended Hubbard model on the hyperkagome lattice, which incorporates atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and multi-orbital interactions of iridium 5d electrons. This model is analyzed using the slave-rotor mean-field theory and thermodynamic properties across the MIT are studied. The ground state in the insulating side is a U(1) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surfaces that consist of multiple particle-like and hole-like pockets. It is shown that the Wilson ra…
Moiré super-potentials in two-dimensional materials allow unprecedented control of the ratio between kinetic and interaction energy. By this, they pave the way to study a wide variety of strongly correlated physics under a new light. In particular, the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising candidate "quantum simulators" of the Hubbard model on a triangular lattice. Indeed, Mott and generalized Wigner crystals have been observed in such devices. Here we theoretically propose to extend this model into the multi-orbital regime by focusing on electron doped systems at filling highe…
In this work we investigate the phase diagram of heavy (4d and 5d) transition metal oxides on the pyrochlore lattice, such as those of the form $\mathrm{A_2M_2O_7}$, where A is a rare earth element and M is a transition metal element. We focus on the competition between Coulomb interaction, spin-orbit coupling, and lattice distortion when these energy scales are comparable. Strong spin-orbit coupling entangles the spin and the $t_{2g}$ $d$-orbitals giving rise to doublet $j=1/2$ and quadruplet $j=3/2$ states. In contrast to previous works which focused on the doublet manifold, we also discuss …

The interacting Kane-Mele model with a long-range hopping is studied using analytical method. The original Kane-Mele model is defined on a honeycomb lattice. In the work, we introduce a four-lattice-constant range hopping and the on-site Hubbard interaction into the model and keep its lattice structure unchanged. From the single-particle energy spectrum, we obtain the critical strength of the long-range hopping $t_L$ at which the topological transition occurs in the non-interacting limit of the model and our results show that it is independent of the spin-orbit coupling. After introducing the …
