We develop a model to describe the mixed valence regime in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) using the recently developed heavy-fermion framework. By employing the large-$N$ slave-boson approach, we derive the self-consistent mean field equations and solve them numerically. We find that the SU(8) symmetry constraint moiré system exhibits novel mixed-valence properties which are different from conventional heavy-fermions systems. We find the solutions describing the physics at the filling near the Mott insulator regime in the limit of strong Coulomb interactions between the flat-band fermions. Our model can provide additional insight into the possible microscopic origin of unconventional superconductivity in MATBG.
The ability to control the strength of interaction is essential for studying quantum phenomena emerging from a system of correlated fermions. For example, the isotope effect illustrates the effect of electron-phonon coupling on superconductivity, providing an important experimental support for the BCS theory. In this work, we report a new device geometry where the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) is placed in close proximity to a Bernal bilayer graphene (BLG) separated by a 3 nm thick barrier. Using charge screening from the Bernal bilayer, the strength of electron-electron Coulomb …
In this work we address the re-entrance of magic-angle phenomena (band flatness and quantum-geometric transport) in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) subjected to strong magnetic fluxes $\pm Φ_0$, $\pm 2 Φ_0$, $\pm 3 Φ_0$... ($Φ_0 = h/e$ is the flux quantum per moiré cell). The moiré translation invariance is restored at the integer fluxes, for which we calculate the TBG band structure using accurate atomistic models with lattice relaxations. Similarly to the zero-flux physics outside the magic angle condition, the reported effect breaks down rapidly with the twist. We conclude that the magic-ang…
In the past two years, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has emerged as a uniquely versatile experimental platform that combines metallic, superconducting, magnetic and insulating phases in a single crystal. In particular the ability to tune the superconducting state with a gate voltage opened up intriguing prospects for novel device functionality. Here we present the first demonstration of a device based on the interplay between two distinct phases in adjustable regions of a single magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene crystal. We electrostatically define the superconducting and insulating …
Twisted bilayered graphenes at magic angles are systems housing long ranged periodicity of Moiré pattern together with short ranged periodicity associated with the individual graphenes. Such materials are a fertile ground for novel states largely driven by electronic correlations. Here we find that the ubiquitous Casimir force can serve as a platform for macroscopic manifestations of the quantum effects stemming from the magic angle bilayered graphenes properties and their phases determined by electronic correlations. By utilizing comprehensive calculations for the electronic and optical respo…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has been experimentally observed to exhibit almost flat bands when the twisting occurs at certain magic angles. In this letter, we report new results on the continuum model of twisted bilayer graphene and its electronic band structure. Under we show that in the approximation of vanishing AA-coupling, the magic angles (at which there exist entirely flat bands) are given as the eigenvalues of a non-hermitian operator, and that all bands start squeezing exponentially fast as the angle $θ$ tends to $0$. In particular, as the interaction potential changes, the dynamic…
Moiré systems displaying flat bands have emerged as novel platforms to study correlated electron phenomena. Insulating and superconducting states appear upon doping magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), and there is evidence of correlation induced effects at the charge neutrality point (CNP) which could originate from spontaneous symmetry breaking. Our theoretical calculations show how optical conductivity measurements can distinguish different symmetry breaking states, and reveal the nature of the correlated states. In the specific case of nematic order, which breaks the discrete rotati…
Recent experiments on magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene have discovered correlated insulating behavior and superconductivity at a fractional filling of an isolated narrow band. In this paper we show that magic-angle bilayer graphene exhibits another hallmark of strongly correlated systems --- a broad regime of $T-$linear resistivity above a small, density dependent, crossover temperature--- for a range of fillings near the correlated insulator. We also extract a transport "scattering rate", which satisfies a near Planckian form that is universally related to the ratio of $(k_BT/\hbar)$. Our…
We present a theory of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene in which attraction is generated between electrons on the same honeycomb sublattice when the system is close to a sublattice polarization instability. The resulting Cooper pairs are spin-polarized valley-singlets. Because the sublattice polarizability is mainly contributed by interband fluctuations, superconductivity occurs over a wide range of filling fraction. It is suppressed by i) applying a sublattice polarizing field (generated by an aligned BN substrate) or ii) changing moiré band filling to favor valley polarization. …

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-tBLG) has appeared as a tunable testing ground to investigate the conspiracy of electronic interactions, band structure, and lattice degrees of freedom to yield exotic quantum many-body ground states in a two-dimensional Dirac material framework. While the impact of external parameters such as doping or magnetic field can be conveniently modified and analyzed, the all-surface nature of the quasi-2D electron gas combined with its intricate internal properties pose a challenging task to characterize the quintessential nature of the different insulating an…
Topological flat bands, valley polarization, and interband superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene with proximitized spin-orbit couplings
The simultaneous co-existence and gate-tuneability of the superconducting (SC), magnetic and topological orders in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) open up entirely new possibilities for the creation of complex hybrid Josephson junctions (JJ). Here we report on the creation of gate-defined, magnetic Josephson junctions in MATBG, where the weak link is gate-tuned close to the correlated state at a moiré filling factor of ν=-2. A highly unconventional Fraunhofer pattern emerges, which is phase-shifted and asymmetric with respect to the current and magnetic field directions, and shows…
We revisit the localized Wannier state description of the twisted bilayer graphene, focusing on the chiral limit. We provide a simple method for constructing such 2D exponentially localized -- yet valley polarized -- Wannier states, centered on the sites of the honeycomb lattice, paying particular attention to maintaining all the unobstructed symmetries. This includes the unitary particle-hole symmetry, and the combination of $C_2\mathcal{T}$ and the chiral particle-hole symmetry. The $C_2\mathcal{T}$ symmetry alone remains topologically obstructed and is not represented in a simple site-to-si…
In the magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), one of the most remarkable observations is the $C_3$-symmetry-breaking nematic state. We identify that the nematicity in MATBG is the $E$-symmetry ferro bond order, which is the modulation of correlated hopping integrals owing to the $E$-symmetry particle-hole pairing condensation. The nematicity in MATBG originates from prominent quantum interference among $SU(4)$ valley+spin composite fluctuations. This novel "valley + spin fluctuation interference mechanism" is revealed by the density wave equation analysis for realistic multiorbital Hubb…
We investigate the correlated electrons in the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene by using the slave-rotor mean-field theory. Owing to the extended figure of Wannier orbitals, we study the two-orbital cluster Hubbard model with spin-valley fourfold degeneracy, focusing around half filling of valence bands below the neutrality point. The theory predicts multiple Mott insulator phases at fractional fillings not only for integer charges per moir{é} site, and it demonstrates that long-range electron hopping is highly suppressed because multiple-charge excitations are induced. Furthermore, the Ke…
We present a framework for understanding the recently observed cascade transitions and the Landau level degeneracies at every integer filling of twisted bilayer graphene. The Coulomb interaction projected onto narrow bands causes the charged excitations at an integer filling to disperse, forming new bands. If the excitation moves the filling away from the charge neutrality point, then it has a band minimum at the moire Brillouin zone center with a small mass that compares well with the experiment; if towards the charge neutrality point, then it has a much larger mass and a higher degeneracy. A…
The discovery of superconducting and insulating states in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has ignited considerable interest in understanding the nature of electronic interactions in this chemically pristine material system. The phenomenological similarity of the MATBG transport properties as a function of doping with those of the high-Tc cuprates and other unconventional superconductors suggests the possibility that MATBG may be a highly interacting system. However, there have not been any direct experimental evidence for strong many-body correlations in MATBG. Here we provide suc…
Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) exhibits a rich variety of electronic states, including correlated insulators, superconductors, and topological phases. Understanding the microscopic mechanisms responsible for these phases requires determining the interplay between electron-electron interactions and quantum degeneracy due to spin and valley degrees of freedom. Signatures of strong electron-electron correlations have been observed at partial fillings of the flat electronic bands in recent spectroscopic measurements. Transport experiments have shown changes in the Landau level degene…
Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MtBLG) has proven to be an extremely promising new platform to realize and study a host of emergent quantum phases arising from the strong correlations in its narrow bandwidth flat band. In this regard, thermal transport phenomena like thermopower, in addition to being coveted technologically, is also sensitive to the particle-hole (PH) asymmetry, making it a crucial tool to probe the underlying electronic structure of this material. We have carried out thermopower measurements of MtBLG as a function of carrier density, temperature and magnetic field, and …
The degeneracy of Landau levels flanking charge neutrality in twisted bilayer graphene is known to change from eight-fold to four-fold when the twist angle is reduced to values near the magic angle of $\approx 1.05^\circ$. This degeneracy lifting has been reproduced in experiments by multiple groups, and is known to occur even in devices which do not harbor the correlated insulators and superconductors. We propose $C_3$ symmetry breaking as an explanation of such robust degeneracy lifting, and support our proposal by numerical results on the Landau level spectrum in near-magic-angle twisted bi…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) develops large moiré patterns at small twist angles with flat energy bands hosting domes of superconductivity. The large system size and intricate band structure have however hampered investigations into the superconducting state. Here, using full-scale atomistic modelling with local electronic interactions, we find at and above experimentally relevant temperatures a highly inhomogeneous superconducting state with nematic ordering on both atomic and moiré length scales. The nematic state has a locally anisotropic real-valued d-wave pairing, with a nematic vector …
Because of the ultra-low photon energies in the mid-infrared and terahertz frequencies, in these bands photodetectors are notoriously underdeveloped, and broadband single photon detectors (SPDs) are non-existent. Advanced SPDs exploit thermal effects in nano-structured superconductors, and their performance is currently limited to the more energetic near-infrared photons due to their high electronic heat capacity. Here, we demonstrate a superconducting magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MAG) device that is capable of detecting single photons of ultra-low energies by utilizing its record-low…
Recent measurements of the resistivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene near the superconducting transition temperature show two-fold anisotropy, or nematicity, when changing the direction of an in-plane magnetic field [Cao \textit{et al.}, Science \textbf{372}, 264 (2021)]. This was interpreted as strong evidence for exotic nematic superconductivity instead of the widely proposed chiral superconductivity. Counter-intuitively, we demonstrate that in two-dimensional chiral superconductors the in-plane magnetic field can hybridize the two chiral superconducting order parameters to induce …
Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has recently emerged as a new platform for studying electron correlations, the strength of which can be controlled via the twist angle. Here, we study the effect of internal screening on electron-electron interactions in undoped tBLG. Using the random phase approximation, we find that the dielectric response of tBLG drastically increases near the magic angle and is highly twist-angle dependent. As a consequence of the abrupt change of the Fermi velocity as a function of wave vector, the screened interaction in real space exhibits attractive regions for certain t…
We provide a mathematical account of the recent Physical Reviews Letter by Tarnopolsky--Kruchkov--Vishwanath. The new contributions are a spectral characterization of magic angles, its accurate numerical implementation and an exponential estimate on the squeezing of all bands as the angle decreases. Pseudospectral phenomena due to the non-hermitian nature of operators appearing in the model play a crucial role in our analysis.
The velocities of the quasiparticles that form Cooper pairs in a superconductor are revealed by the upper critical magnetic field. Here we use this property to assess superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), which has been observed over a range of moiré band filling, twist angle, and screening environment conditions. We find that for pairing mechanisms that are unrelated to correlations within the MATBG flat bands, minima in an average Fermi velocity $v_F^* \equiv k_B T_c \ell_c /\hbar $, where $\ell_c$ is the magnetic length at the critical perpendicular magnetic fie…
Correlated insulators and superconductivity have been observed in "magic-angle" twisted bilayer graphene, when the nearly flat bands close to neutrality are partially filled. While a momentum-space continuum model accurately describes these flat bands, interaction effects are more conveniently incorporated in tight-binding models. We have previously shown that no fully symmetric tight-binding model can be minimal, in the sense of capturing just the flat bands, so extended models are unavoidable. Here, we introduce a family of tight-binding models that capture the flat bands while simultaneousl…
It has recently been shown that superconductivity in magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene survives to in-plane magnetic fields that are well in excess of the Pauli limit, and much stronger than the in-plane critical magnetic fields of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. The difference is surprising because twisted bilayers and trilayers both support the magic-angle flat bands thought to be the fountainhead of twisted graphene superconductivity. We show here that the difference in critical magnetic fields can be traced to a $\mathcal{C}_2 \mathcal{M}_{h}$ symmetry in trilayers that survives …
We model the newly synthesized magic-angle twisted bilayer-graphene superconductor with two $p_{x,y}$-like Wannier orbitals on the superstructure honeycomb lattice, where the hopping integrals are constructed via the Slater-Koster formulism by symmetry analysis. The characteristics exhibited in this simple model are well consistent with both the rigorous calculations and experiment observations. A van Hove singularity and Fermi-surface (FS) nesting are found in the doping levels relevant to the correlated insulator and unconventional superconductivity revealed experimentally, base on which we …
