In the magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), one of the most remarkable observations is the $C_3$-symmetry-breaking nematic state. We identify that the nematicity in MATBG is the $E$-symmetry ferro bond order, which is the modulation of correlated hopping integrals owing to the $E$-symmetry particle-hole pairing condensation. The nematicity in MATBG originates from prominent quantum interference among $SU(4)$ valley+spin composite fluctuations. This novel "valley + spin fluctuation interference mechanism" is revealed by the density wave equation analysis for realistic multiorbital Hubbard model for MATBG. \color{black}We find that the nematic state is robust once three van Hove singularity points exist in each valley. This interference mechanism also causes novel time-reversal-symmetry-broken valley polarization accompanied by a charge loop current. We discuss interesting similarities and differences between MATBG and Fe-based superconductors.
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) develops large moiré patterns at small twist angles with flat energy bands hosting domes of superconductivity. The large system size and intricate band structure have however hampered investigations into the superconducting state. Here, using full-scale atomistic modelling with local electronic interactions, we find at and above experimentally relevant temperatures a highly inhomogeneous superconducting state with nematic ordering on both atomic and moiré length scales. The nematic state has a locally anisotropic real-valued d-wave pairing, with a nematic vector …
Strongly interacting electrons in solid-state systems often display tendency towards multiple broken symmetries in the ground state. The complex interplay between different order parameters can give rise to a rich phase diagram. Here, we report on the identification of intertwined phases with broken rotational symmetry in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). Using transverse resistance measurements, we find a strongly anisotropic phase located in a 'wedge' above the underdoped region of the superconducting dome. Upon crossing the superconducting dome, a reduction of the critical tempera…
We consider magic-angle graphene in the doping regime around charge neutrality and study the connection between a recently proposed inter-valley coherent insulator at zero doping and the neighboring superconducting domes. The magic-angle graphene continuum model has an emergent U(1) valley-charge conservation symmetry, and an emergent SU(2) symmetry corresponding to opposite spin rotations in the two valleys. The inter-valley coherent insulator spontaneously breaks both these emergent symmetries, and as a result has four Goldstone modes which couple to doped charge carriers. We derive the effe…
We propose an SU(4) spin-valley-fermion model to investigate the superconducting instabilities of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). In this approach, bosonic fluctuations associated with an emergent SU(4) symmetry, corresponding to combined rotations in valley and spin spaces, couple to the low-energy fermions that comprise the flat bands. These fluctuations are peaked at zero wave-vector, reflecting the "ferromagnetic-like" SU(4) ground state recently found in strong-coupling solutions of microscopic models for TBG. Focusing on electronic states related to symmetry-imposed points of the Fermi s…
The interplay between quantum Hall ordering and spontaneously broken "internal" symmetries in two-dimensional electron systems with spin or pseudospin degrees of freedom gives rise to a variety of interesting phenomena, including novel phases, phase transitions, and topological excitations. Here we develop a theory of broken-symmetry quantum Hall states, applicable to a class of multi-valley systems, where the symmetry at issue is a point group element that combines a spatial rotation with a permutation of valley indices. The anisotropy of the dispersion relation, generally present in such sys…
Moiré materials such as magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) exhibit remarkable phenomenology, but present significant challenges for certain experimental methods, particularly scanning probes such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Typical STM studies that can image tens of thousands of atomic unit cells can image roughly ten moiré cells, making data analysis statistically fraught. Here, we propose a method to mitigate this problem by aggregating STM conductance data from several bias voltages, and then using the unsupervised machine learning method of gaussian mixture model clus…
We analyze density-wave and Pomeranchuk orders in twisted bilayer graphene. This compliments our earlier analysis of the pairing instabilities. We assume that near half-filling of either conduction or valence band, the Fermi level is close to Van Hove points, where the density of states diverges, and study potential instabilities in the particle-hole channel within a patch model with two valley degrees of freedom. The hexagonal symmetry of twisted bilayer graphene allows for either six or twelve Van Hove points. We consider both cases and find the same two leading candidates for particle-hole …
We study theoretically many-body properties of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene for different doping levels. Our investigation is focused on the emergence, stability, and manifestations of nematicity of the ordered low-temperature electronic state. It is known that, at vanishing interactions, the low-energy spectrum of the system studied consists of four almost-flat almost-degenerate bands. Electron-electron repulsion lifts this degeneracy. To account for such an interaction effect, a numerical mean-field theory is used. Assuming that the ground state has spin-density-wave-like order, we i…
Topological flat bands, valley polarization, and interband superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene with proximitized spin-orbit couplings
Two-dimensional electron gases in strong magnetic fields provide a canonical platform for realizing a variety of electronic ordering phenomena. Here we review the physics of one intriguing class of interaction-driven quantum Hall states: quantum Hall valley nematics. These phases of matter emerge when the formation of a topologically insulating quantum Hall state is accompanied by the spontaneous breaking of a point-group symmetry that combines a spatial rotation with a permutation of valley indices. The resulting orientational order is particularly sensitive to quenched disorder, while quantu…
We theoretically study the correlated insulator states, quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) states, and field-induced topological transitions between different correlated states in twisted multilayer graphene systems. Taking twisted bilayer-monolayer graphene and twisted double-bilayer graphene as examples, we show that both systems stay in spin polarized, $C_{3z}$-broken insulator states with zero Chern number at 1/2 filling of the flat bands under finite displacement fields. In some cases these spin polarized, nematic insulator states are in the quantum valley Hall phase by virtue of the nontrivial…
The interplay between strong correlations and non-trivial topology in twisted moiré systems can give rise to a rich landscape of ordered states that intertwine the spin, valley, and charge degrees of freedom. In this paper, we investigate the properties of a system that displays long-range valley-polarized nematic order. Besides breaking the threefold rotational symmetry of the triangular moiré superlattice, this type of order also breaks twofold rotational and time-reversal symmetries, which leads to interesting properties. First, we develop a phenomenological model to describe the onset of t…
We investigate twisted bilayer graphene near charge neutrality using a generalized Bistritzer-MacDonald continuum model, accounting for corrugation effects. The Fermi velocity vanishes for particular twist angles properly reproducing the physics of the celebrated magic angles. Using group representation theory, we identify all contact interaction potentials compatible with the symmetries of the model. This enables us to identify two classes of quartic interactions leading to either the opening of a gap or to nematic ordering. We then implement a renormalization group analysis to study the comp…
Near a magic twist angle, the lowest energy conduction and valence bands of bilayer graphene moiré superlattices become extremely narrow. The band dispersion that remains is sensitive to the moiré's strain pattern, nonlocal tunneling between layers, and filling-factor dependent Hartree and exchange band renormalizations. In this article we analyze the influence of these band-structure details on the pattern of flavor-symmetry-breaking observed in this narrow band system, and on the associated pattern of Fermi surface reconstructions revealed by weak-field-Hall and Schubnikov-de Haas magneto-tr…
This paper presents a mathematical and numerical analysis of the flatband wavefunctions occurring in the chiral model of twisted bilayer graphene at the "magic" twist angles. We show that the chiral model possesses an exact intra-valley inversion symmetry. Writing the flatband wavefunction as a product of a lowest Landau level quantum Hall state and a spinor, we show that the components of the spinor are anti-quantum Hall wavefunctions related by the inversion symmetry operation introduced here. We then show numerically that as one moves from the lowest to higher magic angles, the spinor compo…
We present a theory of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene in which attraction is generated between electrons on the same honeycomb sublattice when the system is close to a sublattice polarization instability. The resulting Cooper pairs are spin-polarized valley-singlets. Because the sublattice polarizability is mainly contributed by interband fluctuations, superconductivity occurs over a wide range of filling fraction. It is suppressed by i) applying a sublattice polarizing field (generated by an aligned BN substrate) or ii) changing moiré band filling to favor valley polarization. …
In the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-TBG), strong electron-electron (e-e) correlations caused by the band-flattening lead to many exotic quantum phases such as superconductivity, correlated insulator, ferromagnetism, and quantum anomalous Hall effects, when its low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) are partially filled. Here our high-resolution scanning tunneling microscope and spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the e-e correlation in a non-magic-angle TBG with a twist angle θ = 1.49 still plays an important role in determining its electronic properties. Our most interest…
We investigate the correlated electrons in the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene by using the slave-rotor mean-field theory. Owing to the extended figure of Wannier orbitals, we study the two-orbital cluster Hubbard model with spin-valley fourfold degeneracy, focusing around half filling of valence bands below the neutrality point. The theory predicts multiple Mott insulator phases at fractional fillings not only for integer charges per moir{é} site, and it demonstrates that long-range electron hopping is highly suppressed because multiple-charge excitations are induced. Furthermore, the Ke…
We report on a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation of interaction effects on the Moiré flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene, assuming that valley U(1) symmetry is respected. We use realistic band structures and interactions and focus on the charge neutrality point, where experiments have variously reported either insulating or semimetallic behavior. Restricting the search to orders for which the valley U(1) symmetry remains unbroken, we find three types of self-consistent solutions with competitive ground state energy (i) insulators that break $C_2 {\mathcal T}$ symmetry, includin…
Moiré systems displaying flat bands have emerged as novel platforms to study correlated electron phenomena. Insulating and superconducting states appear upon doping magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), and there is evidence of correlation induced effects at the charge neutrality point (CNP) which could originate from spontaneous symmetry breaking. Our theoretical calculations show how optical conductivity measurements can distinguish different symmetry breaking states, and reveal the nature of the correlated states. In the specific case of nematic order, which breaks the discrete rotati…
Starting from a realistic extended Hubbard model for a $p_{x,y}$-orbital tight-binding model on the Honeycomb lattice, we perform a thorough investigation on the possible electron instabilities in the MA-TBG near the van Hove (VH) dopings. Here we focus on the interplay between the approximate SU(2)$\times$SU(2) symmetry and the $D_3$ symmetry, which leads to intriguing quantum states relevant to recent experiments, as revealed by our systematic RPA based calculations followed by a succeeding mean-field energy minimization for the ground state energy. At the SU(2)$\times$SU(2) symmetric point,…
Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) recently emerged as a highly tunable platform for studying correlated phases of matter, such as correlated insulators and superconductivity. Superconductivity occurs in a range of doping levels that is bounded by van Hove singularities which stimulates the debate of the origin and nature of superconductivity in this material. In this work, we discuss the role of spin-fluctuations arising from atomic-scale correlations in MATTG for the superconducting state. We show that in a phase diagram as function of doping ($ν$) and temperature, nematic superco…
We study the the interplay between spontaneously broken valley symmetry and spatial disorder in multivalley semiconductors in the quantum Hall regime. In cases where valleys have anisotropic electron dispersion a previous long-wavelength analysis [Phys. Rev. B 82, 035428 (2010)] identified two new phases exhibiting the QHE. The first is the quantum Hall Ising nematic (QHIN), a phase with long-range orientational order manifested in macroscopic transport anisotropies. The second is the quantum Hall random-field paramagnet (QHRFPM) that emerges when the Ising ordering is disrupted by quenched di…
We investigate correlated insulating states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) by the exact diagonalization method applied to the extended Hubbard model with interaction parameters recently evaluated in the realistic effective model. Our model can handle the competing interactions among Wannier orbitals owing to their significant overlap, which is a crucial but overlooked aspect of the magic-angle TBG. We propose two candidates for the correlated insulating states: spin- and valley-ferromagnetic band insulator and the Dirac semimetallic state for two flavors with peculiar renormaliz…
Recent magneto-transport experiments have provided compelling evidence for the presence of an energetically isolated threefold Q-valley degeneracy in few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides. We study the flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking when each Landau level triplet is one-third filled or empty and predict that a pure flavor nematic phase and a flavorless charge-density-wave phase will occur respectively below and above a critical magnetic field. Surprisingly, electrons carry flavor-dependent electric dipole moments even at zero magnetic field, rendering the nematics ferroelectric, allowing …
We show that the insulating states of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene support a series of collective modes corresponding to local particle-hole excitations on triangular lattice sites. Our theory is based on a continuum model of the magic angle flat bands. When the system is insulating at moiré band filling $ν=-3$, our calculations show that the ground state supports seven low-energy modes that lie well below the charge gap throughout the moiré Brillouin zone, one of which couples strongly to THz photons. The low-energy collective modes are faithfully described by a model with a local $SU…
We investigate the effect of uniaxial heterostrain on the interacting phase diagram of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. Using both self-consistent Hartree-Fock and density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we find that small strain values ($ε\sim 0.1 - 0.2 \%$) drive a zero-temperature phase transition between the symmetry-broken Kramers intervalley-coherent insulator and a nematic semi-metal. The critical strain lies within the range of experimentally observed strain values, and we therefore predict that strain is at least partly responsible for the sample-dependent experimental…
Motivated by recent observation of nematicity in Moiré systems, we study three different orbital orders that potentially can happen in Moiré systems: (1) the nematic order; (2) the valley polarization; and (3) the "compass order". Each order parameter spontaneously breaks part of the spatial symmetries of the system. We explore physics caused by the quantum fluctuations close to the order-disorder transition of these order parameters. Especially, we recognize that the symmetry of the Moiré systems leads to a crucial difference of the effective theory describing the nematic order from the stand…
In bilayer graphene, the phase diagram in the plane of a strain-induced bare nematic term, ${\cal N}_{0}$, and a top-bottom gates voltage imbalance, $U_{0}$, is obtained by solving the gap equation in the random-phase approximation. At nonzero ${\cal N}_0$ and $U_0$, the phase diagram consists of two hybrid spin-valley symmetry-broken phases with both nontrivial nematic and mass-type order parameters. The corresponding phases are separated by a critical line of first- and second-order phase transitions at small and large values of ${\cal N}_0$, respectively. The existence of a critical end poi…
We report on finite-size exact-diagonalization calculations in a Hilbert space defined by the continuum-model flat moiré bands of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG). For moiré band filling $3>|ν|>2$, where superconductivity is strongest, we obtain evidence that the ground state is a spin ferromagnet. Near $|ν|=3$, we find Chern insulator ground states that have spontaneous spin, valley, and sublattice polarization, and demonstrate that the anisotropy energy in this order-parameter space is strongly band-filling-factor dependent. We emphasize that inclusion of the remote band self-ene…
The rich phenomenology of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) near the magic angle is believed to arise from electron correlations in topological flat bands. An unbiased approach to this problem is highly desirable, but also particularly challenging, given the multiple electron flavors, the topological obstruction to defining tight binding models and the long-ranged Coulomb interactions. While numerical simulations of realistic models have thus far been confined to zero temperature, typically excluding some spin or valley species, analytic progress has relied on fixed point models away from the rea…
Twisted bilayered graphenes at magic angles are systems housing long ranged periodicity of Moiré pattern together with short ranged periodicity associated with the individual graphenes. Such materials are a fertile ground for novel states largely driven by electronic correlations. Here we find that the ubiquitous Casimir force can serve as a platform for macroscopic manifestations of the quantum effects stemming from the magic angle bilayered graphenes properties and their phases determined by electronic correlations. By utilizing comprehensive calculations for the electronic and optical respo…
Charge carriers in magic angle graphene come in eight flavors described by a combination of their spin, valley, and sublattice polarizations. When the inversion and time reversal symmetries are broken by the substrate or by strong interactions, the degeneracy of the flavors can be lifted and their corresponding bands can be filled sequentially. Due to their non-trivial band topology and Berry curvature, each of the bands is classified by a topological Chern number, leading to the quantum anomalous Hall and Chern insulator states at integer fillings $ν$ of the bands. It has been recently predic…
In magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), the moiré superlattice potential gives rise to narrow electronic bands1 which support a multitude of many-body quantum phases. Further richness arises in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, where the interplay between moiré and magnetic length scales leads to fractal Hofstadter subbands. In this strongly correlated Hofstadter platform, multiple experiments have identified gapped topological and correlated states, but little is known about the phase transitions between them in the intervening compressible regimes. Here, using a scanni…
We use self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations performed in the full $π$-band Hilbert space to assess the nature of the recently discovered correlated insulator states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We find that gaps between the flat conduction and valence bands open at neutrality over a wide range of twist angles, sometimes without breaking the system's valley projected ${\cal C}_{2}{\cal T}$ symmetry. Broken spin/valley flavor symmetries then enable gapped states to form not only at neutrality, but also at total moiré band filling $n = \pm p/4$ with integer $p = 1, 2, 3$, w…
Using scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy, we explore the spatial symmetry of the electronic wavefunctions of twisted bilayer graphene at the "magic angle" of 1.1 degrees. This small twist angle leads to a long wavelength moiré unit cell on the order of 13 nm and the appearance of two flat bands. As the twist angle is decreased, correlation effects increase until they are maximized at the magic angle. At this angle, the wavefunctions at the charge neutrality point show only C2 symmetry due to the emergence of a charge ordered state. As the system is doped, the symmetry of the wavefuncti…
We consider a configuration of three stacked graphene monolayers with equal consecutive twist angles $θ$. Remarkably, in the chiral limit when interlayer coupling terms between $\textrm{AA}$ sites of the moiré pattern are neglected we find four perfectly flat bands (for each valley) at a sequence of magic angles which are exactly equal to the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) magic angles divided by $\sqrt{2}$. Therefore, the first magic angle for equal-twist trilayer graphene (eTTG) in the chiral limit is $θ_{*} \approx 1.05^{\circ}/\sqrt{2} \approx 0.74^{\circ}$. We prove this relation analytic…
Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrate can exhibit an anomalous Hall effect at 3/4 filling due to the spontaneous valley polarization in valley resolved moiré bands with opposite Chern number [Science 367, 900 (2020), Science 365, 605 (2019)]. It was observed that a small DC current is able to switch the valley polarization and reverse the sign of the Hall conductance [Science 367, 900 (2020), Science 365, 605 (2019)]. Here, we discuss the mechanism of the current switching of valley polarization near the transition temperature, where bulk dissipat…
We consider twisted bilayer graphene on a transition metal dichalcogenide substrate, where proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling significantly alters the eight flat bands which occur near the magic angle. The resulting band structure features a pair of extremely flat bands across most of the mini-Brillouin zone. Further details depend sensitively on the symmetries of the heterostructure; we find semiconducting band structures when all two-fold rotations around in-plane axis are broken, and semi-metallic band structures otherwise. We calculate the Chern numbers of the different isolated bands, …
Twisted bilayer graphene near the magic angle exhibits remarkably rich electron correlation physics, displaying insulating, magnetic, and superconducting phases. Here, using measurements of the local electronic compressibility, we reveal that these phases originate from a high-energy state with an unusual sequence of band populations. As carriers are added to the system, rather than filling all the four spin and valley flavors equally, we find that the population occurs through a sequence of sharp phase transitions, which appear as strong asymmetric jumps of the electronic compressibility near…
