Graphene, a single sheet of graphite with honeycomb lattice structure, has massless carriers with tunable density and polarity. We investigate the ground state phase diagram of two graphene sheets (embedded in a dielectric) separated by distance $d$ where the top layer has electrons and the bottom layer has holes, using mean-field theory. We find that a uniform excitonic condensate occurs over a large range of carrier densities and is weakly dependent on the relative orientation of the two sheets. We obtain the excitonic gap, quasiparticle energy and the density of states. We show that both, the condensate phase stiffness and the mass of the excitons, with massless particles as constituents, vary as the square-root of the carrier density, and predict that the condensate will not undergo Wigner crystallization.
We have considered the AB-stacked bilayer graphene Josephson junction. The bilayers are supposed to be in the charge equilibrium states and at the half-filling in each of the electronic layers of the construction and at each value of the external gate. By considering the interacting bilayers in both sides of the junction and by taking into account both intralayer and interlayer Coulomb interaction effects, we have calculated the normal and excitonic tunnel currents through the junction. The electronic band renormalizations have been taken into account, due to the excitonic pairing effects and …
Double-layer electron systems in the quantum Hall regime have excitonic condensate ground states when the layers are close together and the total Landau level filling factor is close to an odd integer. In this paper we discuss the microscopic physics of these states and recent progress toward building a theory of the anomalous collective transport effects that occur in separately contacted bilayers when the condensate is present.
The competing ground states of bilayer graphene are studied by applying renormalization group techniques to a bilayer honeycomb lattice with nearest neighbor hopping. In the absence of interactions, the Fermi surface of this model at half-filling consists of two nodal points with momenta $\mathbf{K}$, $\mathbf{K}'$, where the conduction band and valence band touch each other, yielding a semi-metal. Since near these two points the energy dispersion is quadratic with perfect particle-hole symmetry, excitonic instabilities are inevitable if inter-band interactions are present. Using a perturbativ…
Using Diffusion Monte Carlo simulations we have investigated the ground state of a symmetric electron-hole bilayer and determined its phase diagram at T=0. We find clear evidence of an excitonic condensate, whose stability however is affected by in-layer electronic correlation. This stabilizes the electron-hole plasma at large values of the density or inter-layer distance, and the Wigner crystal at low density and large distance. We have also estimated pair correlation functions and low order density matrices, to give a microscopic characterization of correlations, as well as to try and estima…
The condensation of electron-hole (e-h) pairs is studied at zero temperature and in the presence of a weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the inversion-layer quantum wells. Under realistic conditions, a perturbative SOC can have observable effects in the order parameter of the experimentally long-searched-for excitonic condensate. Firstly, the fermion exchange symmetry is absent for the e-h pairs indicating a counterexample to the known classification schemes of fermion pairing. With the lack of fermion exchange, the condensate spin has no definite parity. Additionally, the excitonic SOC breaks …
In the present work, we consider the excitonic effects in the twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) within the rotated bilayer Hubbard model. Both, intralayer and interlayer Coulomb interactions have been considered and the half-filling condition is imposed for the electronic densities is both layers of the bilayer. We calculate the excitonic pairing gap parameter and the chemical potential for different twist angles and different values of the interlayer Coulomb interaction parameter. Furthermore, we show the appearance of the electronic flat bands in the electronic band structure, mediated by the …
The possibility of excitonic condensation in a recently proposed electrically biased double-layer graphene system is studied theoretically. The main emphasis is put on obtaining a reliable analytical estimate for the transition temperature into the excitonic state. As in a double-layer graphene system the total number of fermionic "flavors" is equal to N=8 due to two projections of spin, two valleys, and two layers, the large-$N$ approximation appears to be especially suitable for theoretical investigation of the system. On the other hand, the large number of flavors makes screening of the bar…
Bilayer electron-hole systems undergo excitonic condensation when the distance d between the layers is smaller than the typical distance between particles within a layer. All excitons in this condensate have a fixed dipole moment which points perpendicular to the layers, and therefore this condensate of dipoles couples to external electromagnetic fields. We study the transport properties of this dipolar condensate system based on a phenomenological model which takes into account contributions from the condensate and quasiparticles. We discuss, in particular, the drag and counterflow transport,…
We construct a quantum Ginsburg-Landau theory to study the quantum phase transition from the excitonic superfluid (ESF) to a possible pseudo-spin density wave (PSDW) at some intermediate distances driven by the magneto-roton minimum collapsing at a finite wavevector. We analyze the properties of the PSDW and explicitly show that a square lattice is the favorite lattice. We suggest that correlated hopping of vacancies in the active and passive layers in the PSDW state leads to very large and temperature dependent drag consistent with the experimental data. Comparisons with previous microscopic …
The physics of vortices, instantons and deconfinement is studied for layered superfluids in connection to bilayer quantum Hall systems at filling fraction nu=1. We develop an effective gauge theory taking into account both vortices and instantons induced by interlayer tunneling. The renormalization group flow of the gauge charge and the instanton fugacity shows that the coupling of the gauge field to vortex matter produces a continuous transition between the confining phase of free instantons and condensed vortices and a deconfined gapless superfluid where magnetic charges are bound into dipol…
In this paper, we consider the spectral properties of the bilayer graphene with the local excitonic pairing interaction between the electrons and holes. We consider the generalized Hubbard model, which includes both intralayer and interlayer Coulomb interaction parameters. The solution of the excitonic gap parameter is used to calculate the electronic band structure, single-particle spectral functions, the hybridization gap, and the excitonic coherence length in the bilayer graphene. We show that the local interlayer Coulomb interaction is responsible for the semimetal-semiconductor transition…
We theoretically investigate the possibility of excitonic condensation in a system of two graphene monolayers separated by an insulator, in which electrons and holes in the layers are induced by external gates. In contrast to the recent studies of this system, we take into account the screening of the interlayer Coulomb interaction by the carriers in the layers, and this drastically changes the result. Due to a large number of electron species in the system (two projections of spin, two valleys, and two layers) and to the suppression of backscattering in graphene, the maximum possible strength…
We have studied the excitonic gap formation in the Bernal Stacked, bilayer graphene (BLG) structures at half-filling. Considering the local Coulomb interaction between the layers, we calculate the excitonic gap parameter and we discuss the role of the interlayer and intralayer Coulomb interactions and the interlayer hopping on the excitonic pair formation in the BLG. Particularly, we predict the origin of excitonic gap formation and condensation, in relation to the farthermost interband optical transition spectrum. The general diagram of excitonic phase transition is given, explaining differen…
Electron interactions in undoped bilayer graphene lead to instability of the gapless state, `which-layer' symmetry breaking, and energy gap opening at the Dirac point. In contrast to single layer graphene, the bilayer system exhibits instability even for arbitrarily weak interaction. A controlled theory of this instability for realistic dynamically screened Coulomb interactions is developed, with full acount of dynamically generated ultraviolet cutoff. This leads to an energy gap that scales as a power law of the interaction strength, making the excitonic instability readily observable.
Superfluidity in e-h bilayers in graphene and GaAs has been predicted many times but not observed. A key problem is how to treat the screening of the Coulomb interaction for pairing. Different mean-field theories give dramatically different conclusions, and we test them against diffusion Monte-Carlo calculations. We get excellent agreement with the mean-field theory that uses screening in the superfluid state, but large discrepancies with the others. The theory predicts no superfluidity in existing devices and gives pointers for new devices to generate superfluidity.
In this paper we discuss the optical response due to the excitonic effect of two types of hBN bilayers: AB and AA'. Understanding the properties of these bilayers is of great utility to the study of twisted bilayers at arbitrary angles, since these two configurations correspond to the limit cases of 0 and 60 degree rotation. To obtain the excitonic response we present a method to solve a four-band Bethe-Salpeter equation, by casting it into a 1D problem, thus greatly reducing the numerical burden of the calculation when compared with strictly 2D methods. We find results in good agreement with …
Tunneling spectroscopy reveals evidence for interlayer electron-hole correlations in quantum Hall bilayer two-dimensional electron systems at layer separations near, but above, the transition to the incompressible exciton condensate at total Landau level filling $ν_T=1$. These correlations are manifested by a non-linear suppression of the Coulomb pseudogap which inhibits low energy interlayer tunneling in weakly-coupled bilayers. The pseudogap suppression is strongest at $ν_T=1$ and grows rapidly as the critical layer separation for exciton condensation is approached from above.
The influence of screening on the condensed state of bilayer graphene is studied within the framework of the Thomas Fermi approximation. We find that screening has little effect on the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature in the strongly interacting regime. Furthermore, we predict that the phase transition to the condensed state is first order.
We consider the excitonic effects on the thermal properties in the AB-stacked bilayer graphene. The calculations are based on the bilayer generalization of the usual Hubbard model at the half-filling. The full interaction bandwidth is used without any low-energy assumption. We obtain the unusually high values for the electronic figure of merit even at the room-temperatures which is very promising for the thermoelectric applications of the AB-bilayer structure. We discuss the effects of the interlayer Coulomb interaction and temperature on different thermal parameters in the bilayer graphene an…
Using a weak-coupling renormalization group formalism, we study competing ordered phases for repulsively interacting fermions on the bilayer honeycomb lattice away from half-filling, which is realized experimentally as doped bilayer graphene. As electrons are added to the system, excitonic order is suppressed, and unconventional superconductivity appears generically in its place. In general it is found that the maximum critical temperature for superconductivity appears directly adjacent to the dome of particle-hole order, illustrating the importance of fluctuations in these channels for the fo…
We report quantum coherent oscillations of photocapacitance of a double-barrier resonant tunneling heterostructure with bias at 10 K. Periodic presence and absence of sharp excitonic transitions in photocapacitance spectra with increasing bias demonstrate strong coupling between InAs quantum dots (0D) and triangular GaAs quantum well (2D). Coherent resonant tunneling in this 0D-2D heterostructure establishes the momentum space narrowing of excitonic Bose-Einstein Condensation. Drastic increase of indirect exciton densities below 70 K reveal that excitonic wave functions anchored with each InAs…
We propose a generic topological insulator bilayer (TIB) system to study the excitonic condensation with self-consistent mean-field (SCMF) theory. We show that the TIB system presents the crossover behavior from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) limit to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) limit. Moreover, by comparison with traditional semiconductor systems, we find that for the present system the superfluid property in the BEC phase is more sensitive to electron-hole density imbalance and the BCS phase is more robust. Applying this TIB model into Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$-family material, we find that…
The hydrodynamics equations for indirect excitons in the double quantum wells are obtained taking into account 1) a possibility of an exciton condensed phase formation, 2) the presence of a pumping, 3) the finite value of the exciton lifetime, 4) the exciton scattering by defects.New types of solutions in the form of bright and dark autsolitons are obtained for the exciton density. The role of localized and free exciton states is analyzed in a formation of the emission spectra.
Interaction induced topological states remain one of the fascinating phases in condensed matter physics. The exciton condensate has recently sparked renewed interest due to the discovery of new candidate materials and its driving force to realize exotic topological states. In this work, we explore the exciton orders induced high-order topology in the bilayer quantum spin Hall insulators and find that the topological excitonic corner states can be realized by tuning the gate and magnetic field. When an in-plane Zeeman field is applied to the system, two or four excitonic boundary-obstructed cor…
The effect of tunneling on the transport properties of} quantum Hall double layers in the regime of the excitonic condensate at total filling factor one is studied in counterflow experiments. If the tunnel current $I$ is smaller than a critical $I_C$, tunneling is large and is effectively shorting the two layers. For $I > I_C$ tunneling becomes negligible. Surprisingly, the transition between the two tunneling regimes has only a minor impact on the features of the filling-factor one state as observed in magneto-transport, but at currents exceeding $I_C$ the resistance along the layers increase…
We show theoretically that excitons can form from spatially separated one-dimensional ground state populations of electrons and holes, and that the resulting excitons can form a quasicondensate. We describe a mean-field Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory in the low carrier density regime and then focus on the core-shell nanowire giving estimates of the size of the excitonic gap for InAs/GaSb wires and as a function of all the experimentally relevant parameters. We find that optimal conditions for pairing include small overlap of the electron and hole bands, large effective mass of the carriers, …
The low-energy bands of twisted bilayer graphene form Dirac cones with approximate electron-hole symmetry at small rotation angles. These crossings are protected by the emergent symmetries of moiré patterns, conferring a topological character to the bands. Strain accumulated between layers (heterostrain) shifts the Dirac points both in energy and momentum. The overlap of conduction and valence bands favors an excitonic instability of the Fermi surface close to the neutrality point. The spontaneous condensation of electron-hole pairs breaks time reversal symmetry and the separate conservation o…
Motivated by recent studies that reported the successful synthesis of monolayer Mg(OH)$_{2}$ [Suslu \textit{et al.}, Sci. Rep. \textbf{6}, 20525 (2016)] and hexagonal (\textit{h}-)AlN [Tsipas \textit{et al}., Appl. Phys. Lett. \textbf{103}, 251605 (2013)], we investigate structural, electronic, and optical properties of vertically stacked $h$-AlN and Mg(OH)$_{2}$, through \textit{ab initio} density-functional theory (DFT), many-body quasi-particle calculations within the GW approximation, and the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE). It is obtained that the bilayer heterostructure prefers the $AB^{\p…
We investigate the quasiparticle excitation of the bilayer quantum Hall (QH) system at total filling factor $ν_{\mathrm{T}} = 1$ in the limit of negligible interlayer tunneling under tilted magnetic field. We show that the intrinsic quasiparticle excitation is of purely pseudospin origin and solely governed by the inter- and intra-layer electron interactions. A model based on exciton formation successfully explains the quantitative behavior of the quasiparticle excitation gap, demonstrating the existence of a link between the excitonic QH state and the composite fermion liquid. Our results pro…
Graphene bilayers can condense into a state with spontaneous interlayer phase coherence that supports dissipationless counterflow supercurrents. Here we address the influence of disorder on the graphene bilayer mean-field and Kosterlitz-Thouless critical temperatures and report on a simple criteria for the survival of pair condensation.
We report a systematic study of the optical conductivity of twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) across a large energy range (1.2 eV to 5.6 eV) for various twist angles, combined with first-principles calculations. At previously unexplored high energies, our data show signatures of multiple van Hove singularities (vHSs) in the tBLG bands, as well as the nonlinearity of the single layer graphene bands and their electron-hole asymmetry. Our data also suggest that excitonic effects play a vital role in the optical spectra of tBLG. Including electron-hole interactions in first-principles calculations i…
We show theoretically that an undoped carbon nanotube might be an excitonic insulator---the long-sought phase of matter proposed by Keldysh, Kohn and others fifty years ago. We predict that the condensation of triplet excitons, driven by intervalley exchange interaction, spontaneously occurs at equilibrium if the tube radius is sufficiently small. The signatures of exciton condensation are its sizeable contributions to both the energy gap and the magnetic moment per electron. The increase of the gap might have already been measured, albeit with a different explanation [Deshpande et al., Scienc…
We investigate the excitonic instability in the theory of Dirac fermions in graphene with long-range Coulomb interaction. We analyze the electron-hole vertex relevant for exciton condensation in the ladder approximation, showing that it blows up at a critical value of the interaction strength α= e^2/4πv_F sensitive to further many-body corrections. Under static screening of the interaction, we find that taking into account electron self-energy corrections increases the critical coupling to α_c \approx 2.09, for a number N = 4 of two-component Dirac fermions. We show that the dynamical screenin…
An ordered state of electrons in solids in which excitons condense was proposed many years ago as a theoretical possibility but has, until recently, never been observed. We review recent studies of semiconductor bilayer systems that provide clear evidence for this phenomenon and explain why exciton condensation in the quantum Hall regime, where these experiments were performed, is as likely to occur in electron-electron bilayers as in electron-hole bilayers. In current quantum Hall exciton condensates, disorder induces mobile vortices that flow in response to a supercurrent and limit the extre…
The ground-state wave function and the energy gap are calculated for various layer separations d and for up to 24 electrons by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. Two-particle distribution function and excitonic correlation function are calculated from the ground-state wave function, and the evolution of the ground state with increasing d is analyzed. The results indicate that the transition is continuous. A smooth crossover of the ground state is found at around d/l ~ 1.6 from the excitonic character at small d/l to the independent Fermi-liquid character at large d/l, wher…

We study the two-dimensional spatially separated electron-hole system with density imbalance at absolute zero temperature. By means of the mean-field theory, we find that the Fulde-Ferrell state is fairly stabilized by the order parameter mixing effect.
A fully selfconsistent treatment for gap generation and Coulomb screening in excitonic insulators is presented. The method is based on the equations of motion for the relevant dynamical variables combined with a variational approach. Applying the theory for a model system of bilayer graphene, an excitonic groundstate with a gap exceeding 10 meV is predicted.
Spatially indirect excitons can be created when an electron and a hole, confined to separate layers of a double quantum well system, bind to form a composite Boson. Because there is no recombination pathway such excitons are long lived making them accessible to transport studies. Moreover, the ability to independently tune both the intralayer charge density and interlayer electron-hole separation provides the capability to reach the low-density, strongly interacting regime where a BEC-like phase transition into a superfluid ground state is anticipated. To date, transport signatures of the supe…
In ordinary semiconductor bilayers, exciton condensates appear at total Landau level filling factor $ν_{T}=1$. We predict that similar states will occur in Bernal stacked graphene bilayers at many non-zero integer filling factors. For $ν_{T} = -3,1$ we find that the superfluid density of the exciton condensate vanishes and that a finite-temperature fluctuation induced first order isotropic-smectic phase transition occurs when the layer densities are not balanced. These anomalous properties of bilayer graphene exciton condensates are due to the degeneracy of Landau levels with $n=0$ and $n=1$ o…
We present and discuss a mathematical model for the operation of bilayer organic photovoltaic devices. Our model couples drift-diffusion-recombination equations for the charge carriers (specifically, electrons and holes) with a reaction-diffusion equation for the excitons/ polaron pairs and Poisson's equation for the self-consistent electrostatic potential. The material difference (i.e. the HOMO/LUMO gap) of the two organic substrates forming the bilayer device are included as a work-function potential. Firstly, we perform an asymptotic analysis of the scaled one-dimensional stationary state s…
We show that the fractional statistics of quasiparticles in dimerized graphene, in recent proposals for charge and statistics fractionalization, can have two realizations depending whether elementary objects can be considered as point-like or extended objects. Therefore, there are two phases of proposed excitations and we give their topological descriptions with their respective statistics. We propose that a natural setting for fractionalization are certain systems with excitonic instabilities and demonstrate this by an example of graphene bilayer.
Bilayer electron-hole systems, where carriers in one layer are electrons and carriers in the other are holes, have been actively investigated in recent years with the focus on Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons. This condensation is expected to occur when the layer separation d is much smaller than the interparticle distance r_sa_B within each layer. In this Brief Report, we argue for the existence of a state, Wigner supersolid, in which excitons are phase-coherent but form a Wigner crystal due to dipolar repulsion. We present the qualitative phase diagram of a bilayer system, and discuss …
We introduce a design of electrically isolated floating bilayer GaAs quantum wells (QW) in which application of a large gating voltage controllably and highly reproducibly induces charges that remain trapped in the bilayer after removal of the gating voltage. At smaller gate voltages, the bilayer is fully electrically isolated from external electrodes by thick insulating barriers. This design permits full control of the total and differential densities of two coupled 2D electron systems. The floating bilayer design provides a unique approach for studying systems inaccessible by simple transpor…
