We study the coupling between a quantum dot and the edge of a non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall state which is spatially separated from it by an integer quantum Hall state. Near a resonance, the physics at energy scales below the level spacing of the edge states of the dot is governed by a $k$-channel Kondo model when the quantum Hall state is a Read-Rezayi state at filling fraction $ν=2+k/(k+2)$ or its particle-hole conjugate at $ν=2+2/(k+2)$. The $k$-channel Kondo model is channel isotropic even without fine tuning in the former state; in the latter, it is generically channel anisotropic. In the special case of $k=2$, our results provide a new venue, realized in a mesoscopic context, to distinguish between the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states at filling fraction $ν=5/2$.
The long-thought charge Kondo effects have recently been experimentally realized in the quantum Hall regime. This experiment, supported by numerics, exemplifies the realization of two-channel Kondo state, a non-Fermi Liquid, and its crossover to the one-channel counterpart, a Fermi liquid. Scaling up such a platform, we find a hierarchy of non-Fermi Liquids and their tunable crossovers based on a renormalization group analysis. Utilizing results from a conformal field theory, we further examine the universal conductances of this strongly correlated system and their finite temperature scaling, …
The enhanced spin Hall effect in Au metal due to the resonant skew scattering is studied with first-principles band structure calculations. Especially the gigantic spin Hall angle $γ_S \cong 0.1$ observed recently (T.Seki et al., Nature Materials {\bf 7}, 125 (2008)) is attributed to the orbital-dependent Kondo effect of Fe in the Au host metal, where the $t_{2g}$-orbitals are in the mixed-valence region while $e_g$-orbitals are in the Kondo limit. The enhanced spin-orbit interaction by the electron correlation in the $t_{2g}$-orbitals leads to the gigantic spin Hall effect. Impurities with 5d…
Using the hierarchy picture of the fractional quantum Hall effect, we study the the ground state periodicity of a finite size quantum Hall droplet in a quantum Hall fluid of a different filling factor. The droplet edge charge is periodically modulated with flux through the droplet and will lead to a periodic variation in the conductance of a nearby point contact, such as occurs in some quantum Hall interferometers. Our model is consistent with experiment and predicts that superperiods can be observed in geometries where no interfering trajectories occur. The model may also provide an experimen…
We report on tunneling experiment between two quantum Hall droplets separated by a nearly ideal tunnel barrier. The device is produced by cleaved edge overgrowth that laterally juxtaposes two two-dimensional electron systems across a high quality semiconductor barrier. The dramatic evolution of the tunneling characteristics is consistent with the magnetic field-dependent tunneling between the coupled edge states of the quantum Hall droplets. We identify a series of quantum critical points between successive strong and weak tunneling regimes that are reminiscent of the plateau-transitions in qu…
We consider the absorption of microwaves by a quantum Hall droplet. We show that the number and velocities of charged edge modes can be directly measured from a droplet of known shape. In contrast to standard transport measurements, different edge equilibration regimes can be accessed in the same device. If there is a quantum point contact in the droplet, then quasiparticle properties, including braiding statistics, can be observed. Their effects are manifested as modulations of the microwave absorption spectrum that are, notably, first-order in the tunneling amplitude at the point contact.
We argue that topological meron excitations, which are in a strong coupling phase (bound in pairs) in infinite quantum Hall ferromagnets, become deconfined in finite size quantum Hall systems. Although effectively for larger systems meron energy grows with the size of the system, when gyromagnetic ratio is small meron becomes the lowest lying state of a quantum Hall droplet. This comes as a consequence of the many-body correlations built in the meron construction that minimize the interaction energy. We demonstrate this by using mean field ansatzes for meron wave function. The ansatzes will en…
Two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots are studied in the the filling-factor range 2<v<3. We find both theoretical and experimental evidence of a collective many-body phenomenon, where a fraction of the trapped electrons form an incompressible spin-droplet on the highest occupied Landau level. The phenomenon occurs only when the number of electrons in the quantum dot is larger than ~30. We find the onset of the spin-droplet regime at v=5/2. This proposes a finite-geometry alternative to the Moore-Read-type Pfaffian state of the bulk two-dimensional electron gas. Hence, the spin-droplet for…
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in strongly disordered magnetic systems has been buried in persistent confusion despite its long history. We report the AHE in perpendicularly magnetized L10-MnAl epitaxial films with variable orbital two-channel Kondo (2CK) effect arising from the strong coupling of conduction electrons and the structural disorders of two-level systems. The AHE is observed to excellently scale with pAH/f=a0pxx0+bpxx2 at high temperatures where phonon scattering prevails. In contrast, significant deviation occurs at low temperatures where the orbital 2CK effect becomes important…
Using exact diagonalization in the disc geometry we predict a novel even-odd effect in the Coulomb blockade spectra of vertically coupled double quantum dots under an external magnetic field. The even-odd effect in the tunneling conductance is a direct manifestation of spontaneous interlayer phase coherence, and is similar to the even-odd resonance in the Cooper pair box problem in mesoscopic superconducting grains. Coherent fluctuations in the number of Cooper pairs in superconductors is analogous to the fluctuations in the relative number difference between the two layers in quantum Hall dro…
We present a theory of laterally coupled quantum Hall droplets with electron numbers (N1,N2) at filling factor $ν=2$. We show that the edge states of each droplet are tunnel coupled and form a two-level artificial molecule. By populating the edge states with one electron each a two electron molecule is formed. We predict the singlet-triplet transitions of the effective two-electron molecule as a function of the magnetic field, the number of electrons, and confining potential using the configuration interaction method (CI) coupled with the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (URHF) basis. In addition to …
When a gas of electrons is confined to two dimensions, application of a strong magnetic field may lead to startling phenomena such as emergence of electron pairing. According to a theory this manifests itself as appearance of the fractional quantum Hall effect with a quantized conductivity at an unusual half-integer nu=5/2 Landau level filling. Here we show that similar electron pairing may occur in quantum dots where the gas of electrons is trapped by external electric potentials into small quantum Hall droplets. However, we also find theoretical and experimental evidence that, depending on t…
Quantum dots in the quantum Hall regime can have pairs of single Slater determinant states that are degenerate in energy. We argue that these pairs of many body states may give rise to a Kondo effect which can be mapped into an ordinary Kondo effect in a fictitious magnetic field. We report on several properties of this Kondo effect using scaling and numerical renormalization group analysis. We suggest an experiment to investigate this Kondo effect.
Following the recent observation of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect in HgTe quantum wells, an important issue is to understand the effect of impurities on transport in the QSH regime. Using linear response and renormalization group methods, we calculate the edge conductance of a QSH insulator as a function of temperature in the presence of a magnetic impurity. At high temperatures, Kondo and/or two-particle scattering give rise to a logarithmic temperature dependence. At low temperatures, for weak Coulomb interactions in the edge liquid the conductance is restored to unitarity with unusual …
We investigate a mesoscopic setup composed of a small electron droplet (dot) coupled to a larger quantum dot (grain) also subject to Coulomb blockade as well as two macroscopic leads used as source and drain. An exotic Kondo ground state other than the standard SU(2) Fermi liquid unambiguously emerges: an SU(4) Kondo correlated liquid. The transport properties through the small dot are analyzed for this regime, through boundary conformal field theory, and allow a clear distinction with other regimes such as a two-channel spin state or a two-channel orbital state.

A mapping between fractional quantum Hall (FQH) junctions and the two-channel Kondo model is presented. We discuss in detail this relation for the particular case of a junction of a FQH state at $ν= 1/3$ and a normal metal. We show that in the strong coupling regime this junction has a non-Fermi liquid fixed point. At this fixed point the electron Green's function has a branch cut, and the entropy has a non-zero value equal to $S={1/2} \ln{2}$. We construct the space of perturbations at the strong coupling fixed point and find that the dimensions of the tunneling operator is 1/2. These behavio…
We report on a Kondo correlated quantum dot connected to two-dimensional leads where we demonstrate the renormalization of the g-factor in the pure Zeeman case i.e, for magnetic fields parallel to the plane of the quantum dot. For the same system we study the influence of orbital effects by investigating the quantum Hall regime i.e. a perpendicular magnetic field is applied. In this case an unusual behaviour of the suppression of the Kondo effect and of the split zero-bias anomaly is observed. The splitting decreases with magnetic field and shows discontinuous changes which are attributed to t…
We find that the confinement potential of a few electron quantum dot can be tuned to significantly increase the overlap with certain quantum Hall trial wave functions. Besides manipulating inter-electron interaction, this approach may prove useful in quantum point contact experiments, which involve narrow constrictions.
We propose a general capacitive model for an antidot, which has two localized edge states with different spins in the quantum Hall regime. The capacitive coupling of localized excess charges, which are generated around the antidot due to magnetic flux quantization, and their effective spin fluctuation can result in Coulomb blockade, h/(2e) Aharonov-Bohm oscillations, and the Kondo effect. The resultant conductance is in qualitative agreement with recent experimental data.
We present a theory and Coulomb and Spin Blockade spectroscopy experiments on quantum Hall droplets with controlled electron numbers (N1,N2) in laterally coupled gated quantum dots. The theory is based on the configuration interaction method (CI) coupled with the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (URHF) basis. It allows us to calculate the magnetic field evolution of ground and excited states of coupled quantum dots with large electron numbers. The method is applied to the spin transitions in the (5,5) droplet. Preliminary experimental results demonstrate the creation of the (5,5) droplet and its Spin…
We study the formation and characteristics of "spin droplets",i.e., compact spin-polarized configurations in the highest occupied Landau level, in an etched quantum Hall device at filling factors $2\leqν\leq3$. The confining potential for electrons is obtained with self-consistent electrostatic calculations on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure with experimental system parameters. Real-space spin-density-functional calculations for electrons confined in the obtained potential show the appearance of stable spin droplets at $ν\sim 5/2$. The qualitative features of the spin droplet are similar to thos…
A theory of electronic properties of a spin-singlet quantum Hall droplet at filling factor $ν=2$ in a parabolic quantum dot is developed. The excitation spectrum and the stability of the droplet due to the transfer of electrons into the second Landau level at low magnetic fields and due to spin flip at the edge at higher magnetic fields is determined using Hartree-Fock, exact diagonalisation, and spin-density functional methods. We show that above a critical number of electrons $N_c$ the unpolarised $ν=2$ quantum Hall droplet ceases to be a ground state in favor of spin-polarised phases. We de…
Whereas anyons are the building blocks in topological quantum computation, it remains challenging to create and control each anyon individually. Here, we point out that dissipative dynamics in cavities deterministically deliver droplets of light in desired fractional quantum Hall states. In these quantum Hall droplets, both the number and locations of anyons are precisely controllable without requiring extra potentials to imprint and localize such quasiparticles. Using the density profile of light, the anyonic statistics is readily accessible. Moreover, entangling a quantum spin valve with the…
We study the trapping of Abelian anyons (quasiholes and quasiparticles) by a local potential (e.g., induced by an AFM tip) in a microscopic model of fractional quantum Hall liquids with long-range Coulomb interaction and edge confining potential. We find, in particular, at Laughlin filling fraction $ν= 1/3$, both quasihole and quasiparticle states can emerge as the ground state of the system in the presence of the trapping potential. As expected, we find the presence of an Abelian quasihole has no effect on the edge spectrum of the quantum liquid, unlike in the non-Abelian case [Phys. Rev. Let…
We derive the hamiltonian and canonical structure for arbitrary deformations of a phase space (quantum Hall) droplet on a general manifold of any dimension. The derivation is based on a transformation that decouples the Casimirs of the density Poisson structure. The linearized theory reproduces the edge state chiral action of the droplets, while the nonlinear hamiltonian captures 1/N quantum corrections.
We consider quantum Hall droplets on complex projective spaces with a combination of abelian and nonabelian background magnetic fields. Carrying out an analysis similar to what was done for abelian backgrounds, we show that the effective action for the edge excitations is given by a chiral, gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) theory generalized to higher dimensions.
We find that a gauged matrix model of rectangular fermionic matrices (a matrix version of the fermion harmonic oscillator) realizes a quantum hall droplet with manifest particle-hole symmetry. The droplet consists of free fermions on the topology of a sphere. It is also possible to deform the Hamiltonian by double trace operators, and we argue that this device can produce two body potentials which might lead the system to realize a fractional quantum hall state on the sphere. We also argue that a single gauged fermionic quantum mechanics of hermitian matrices realizes a droplet with an edge th…
In this work we investigate collective excitations at the boundary of a recently constructed 4D quantum Hall state. Local bosonic operators for creating these collective excitations can be constructed explicitly. Massless relativistic wave equations with helicity $S$ can be derived exactly for these operators from their Heisenberg equation of motion. For the S=1 and S=2 cases these equations reduce to the free Maxwell and linearized Einstein equation respectively. These collective excitations can be interpreted as hydrodynamical modes at the boundary of the 4D QHE droplet. Outstanding issues a…
We calculate the anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ of the surface states {in cubic topological Kondo insulators}. We consider a generic model for the surface states with three Dirac cones on the (001) surface. The Fermi velocity, the Fermi momentum and the Zeeman energy in different Dirac pockets may be unequal. The microscopic impurity potential mediates mixed intra and interband extrinsic scattering processes. Our calculation of $σ_{xy}$ is based on the Kubo-Streda diagrammatic approach. It includes diffractive skew scattering contributions originating from the rare two-impurity complexes…
Using a $W_{N}$-gauge theory to describe electromagnetic interactions of spinless fermions in the lowest Landau level, where the $W_{N}$ transformations are nonlinear realizations of U(1) gauge transformations, we construct the effective action describing electromagnetic interactions of a higher dimensional quantum Hall droplet. We also discuss how this is related to the Abelian Seiberg-Witten map. Explicit calculations are presented for the quantum Hall effect on ${\bf CP}^k$ with U(1) background magnetic field. The bulk action is a Kähler-Chern-Simons term whose anomaly is cancelled by a bou…
We derive the canonical structure and hamiltonian for arbitrary deformations of a higher-dimensional (quantum Hall) droplet of fermions with spin or color on a general phase space manifold. Gauge fields are introduced via a Kaluza-Klein construction on the phase space. The emerging theory is a nonlinear higher-dimensional generalization of the gauged Kac-Moody algebra. To leading order in h-bar this reproduces the edge state chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten action of the droplet.
We derive semiclassical ground state solutions that correspond to the quantum Hall states earlier found in the Maxwell-Chern-Simons matrix theory. They realize the Jain composite-fermion construction and their density is piecewise constant as that of phenomenological wave functions. These results support the matrix theory as a possible effective theory of the fractional Hall effect. A crucial role is played by the constraint limiting the degeneracy of matrix states: we find its explicit gauge invariant form and clarify its physical interpretation.
We study a two-dimensional cylindrically-symmetric electron droplet separated from a surrounding electron ring by a tunable barrier using the exact diagonalization method. The magnetic field is assumed strong so that the electrons become spin-polarized and reside on the lowest Fock-Darwin band. We calculate the ground state phase diagram for 6 electrons. At weak coupling, the phase diagram exhibits a clear diamond structure due to the blockade caused by the angular momentum difference between the two systems. We find separate excitations of the droplet and the ring as well as the transfer of c…
We show how spectroscopic experiments on a small Laughlin droplet of rotating bosons can directly demonstrate Haldane fractional exclusion statistics of quasihole excitations. The characteristic signatures appear in the single-particle excitation spectrum. We show that the transitions are governed by a "many-body selection rule" which allows one to relate the number of allowed transitions to the number of quasihole states on a finite geometry. We illustrate the theory with numerically exact simulations of small numbers of particles.
Chiral partition functions of conformal field theory describe the edge excitations of isolated Hall droplets. They are characterized by an index specifying the quasiparticle sector and transform among themselves by a finite-dimensional representation of the modular group. The partition functions are derived and used to describe electron transitions leading to Coulomb blockade conductance peaks. We find the peak patterns for Abelian hierarchical states and non-Abelian Read-Rezayi states, and compare them. Experimental observation of these features can check the qualitative properties of the con…
Quasi-static transport measurements are employed to characterize a few electron quantum dot electrostatically defined in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. The gate geometry allows observations on one and the same electron droplet within a wide range of coupling strengths to the leads. The weak coupling regime is described by discrete quantum states. At strong interaction with the leads Kondo phenomena are observed as a function of a magnetic field. By varying gate voltages the electron droplet can, in addition, be distorted into a double quantum dot with a strong interdot tunnel coupling while ke…
We study electronic structures of quasi-two-dimensional finite electron systems in high magnetic fields. The solutions in the fractional quantum Hall regime are interpreted as quantum liquids of electrons and off-electron vortices. The ground states are classified according to the number of vortices inside the electron droplet. The theory predicts observable effects due to vortex formation in the chemical potentials and magnetization of electron droplets. We compare the transitions in the theory to those found in electron transport experiments on a quantum dot device and find significant corre…

At low temperatures, a system built from a small droplet of electrons and a larger, but still finite, droplet may display non-Fermi-liquid behavior. Stabilization of a multi-channel Kondo fixed point requires fine control of the electrochemical potential in each droplet. The desired fine control can be achieved by adjusting voltages on nearby gate electrodes. We study the conditions for obtaining this type of non-Fermi-liquid behavior and discuss the experimentally-observable consequences.
Whether the surface states in SmB6 are topological is still a critical issue in the field of topological Kondo insulators. In the magneto-transport study of single crystalline SmB6 microribbons, we have revealed a positive planar Hall effect (PHE), the amplitude of which increases dramatically with decreasing temperatures but saturates below 5 K. This positive PHE is ascribed to the surface states of SmB6 and expected to arise from the anisotropy in lifting the topological protection from back-scattering by the in-plane magnetic field, thus suggesting the topological nature of surface states i…
We show that the integer quantum Hall effect systems in plane, sphere or disc, can be formulated in terms of an algebraic unified scheme. This can be achieved by making use of a generalized Weyl--Heisenberg algebra and investigating its basic features. We study the electromagnetic excitation and derive the Hamiltonian for droplets of fermions on a two-dimensional Bargmann space (phase space). This excitation is introduced through a deformation (perturbation) of the symplectic structure of the phase space. We show the major role of Moser's lemma in dressing procedure, which allows us to elimina…
By using an extended mean-field theory, we study the phase diagram of the topological Kondo lattice model on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling in which the conduction electrons are described by the Haldane model. Besides the well-defined Kondo insulator and normal antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave (N-SDW) state, it is found that a nontrivial topological antiferromagnetic SDW state (T-SDW) with a quantized Hall conductance is possible if the quasiparticle gap is dominated by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping rather than the antiferromagnetic order. By analyzing the low-energy effective Ch…
In this work, a quantum dot that is defined asymmetrically by electrostatic means induced on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure is investigated to unravel the effect of geometric constrains on the formation of spin droplets under quantised Hall conditions. The incompressibility of exciting nu = 5/2 state is explored by solving the Schrodinger equation within spin density functional theory, where the confinement potential is obtained self-consistently utilising the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Our numerical investigations show that the spatial distribution of the nu = 2 incompressible strips and elec…
In the presence of mass anisotropy, anisotropic interaction, or in-plane magnetic field, quantum Hall droplets can exhibit shape deformation and internal geometrical degree of freedom. We characterize the geometry of quantum Hall states by principal component analysis, which is a statistical technique that emphasizes variation in a dataset. We first test the method in an integer quantum Hall droplet with dipole-dipole interaction in disk geometry. In the subsequent application to fractional quantum Hall systems with anisotropic Coulomb interaction in torus geometry, we demonstrate that the pri…
The degeneracy of energy levels in a quantum dot of Hall fluid, leading to conductance peaks, can be readily derived from the partition functions of conformal field theory. Their complete expressions can be found for Hall states with both Abelian and non-Abelian statistics, upon adapting known results for the annulus geometry. We analyze the Abelian states with hierarchical filling fractions, ν=m/(mp \pm 1), and find a non trivial pattern of conductance peaks. In particular, each one of them occurs with a characteristic multiplicity, that is due to the extended symmetry of the m-folded edge. E…
We study the physics of electron tunneling between multiple quantum dots and the edge of a quantum Hall state. Our results generalize earlier work [G. A. Fiete, W. Bishara, C. Nayak, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 176801 (2008)] in which it was shown that a single quantum dot tunnel coupled to a non-Abelian quantum Hall state can realize a stable multi-channel Kondo fixed point at low-energy. In this work, we investigate the physics of multiple dots and find that a rich set of possible low-energy fixed points arises, including those with non-Fermi liquid properties. Previously unidentified fixed points…
We algebraically analysis the quantum Hall effect of a system of particles living on the disc ${\bf B}^1$ in the presence of an uniform magnetic field $B$. For this, we identify the non-compact disc with the coset space $SU(1,1)/U(1)$. This allows us to use the geometric quantization in order to get the wavefunctions as the Wigner ${\cal D}$-functions satisfying a suitable constraint. We show that the corresponding Hamiltonian coincides with the Maass Laplacian. Restricting to the lowest Landau level, we introduce the noncommutative geometry through the star product. Also we discuss the state …
We report the observation of Kondo physics in a spin- 3/2 hole quantum dot. The dot is formed close to pinch-off in a hole quantum wire defined in an undoped AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. We clearly observe two distinctive hallmarks of quantum dot Kondo physics. First, the Zeeman spin-splitting of the zero-bias peak in the differential conductance is independent of gate voltage. Second, this splitting is twice as large as the splitting for the lowest one-dimensional subband. We show that the Zeeman splitting of the zero-bias peak is highly-anisotropic, and attribute this to the strong spin-orbi…

We propose a realization of Kondo-lattice physics in moiré superlattices at the interface between a WX$_2$ homobilayer and MoX$_2$ monolayer (where X=S,Se). Under appropriate gating conditions, the interface-WX$_2$-layer forms a triangular lattice of local moments that couple to itinerant electrons in the other WX$_2$-layer via a gate-tunable Kondo exchange interaction. Using a parton mean-field approach we identify a range of twist-angles which support a gate-tuned quantum phase transition between a heavy-fermion liquid with large anomalous Hall conductance and a fractionalized chiral spin-li…
In preceding papers a Landauer-Buttiker type representation of bulk current transport has been successfully used for the numerical simulation of the magneto transport of 2-dimensional electron systems in the high magnetic field regime. In this paper it is demonstrated, that this representation is in full agreement with a treatment of the bulk current transport as a tunneling process between magnetic bound states. Additionally we find a correspondence between our network representation and the bulk current picture in terms of mixed phases mapped on a checkerboard: At half filled Landau level (L…
The shape of an electronic droplet in the quantum Hall effect is sensitive to gradients of the magnetic field, even if they are placed outside the droplet. Magnetic impurities cause a fingering instability of the edge of the droplet, similar to the Saffman-Taylor fingering instability of an interface between two immiscible phases. We discuss the fingering instability and some algebraic aspects of the electronic states in a strong nonuniform field.
We show that the numerical method [M.E. Torio, K. Hallberg, A.H. Ceccatto, and C.R. Proetto, Phys. Rev. B 65, 085302 (2002), cond-mat/0108167v2] does not reproduce correctly the Kondo physics in quantum dot systems with interaction.
