In the presence of mass anisotropy, anisotropic interaction, or in-plane magnetic field, quantum Hall droplets can exhibit shape deformation and internal geometrical degree of freedom. We characterize the geometry of quantum Hall states by principal component analysis, which is a statistical technique that emphasizes variation in a dataset. We first test the method in an integer quantum Hall droplet with dipole-dipole interaction in disk geometry. In the subsequent application to fractional quantum Hall systems with anisotropic Coulomb interaction in torus geometry, we demonstrate that the principal component analysis can quantify the metric degree of freedom and predict the collapse of a $ν= 1/3$ state. We also calculate the metric response to interaction anisotropy at filling fractions $ν= 1/5$ and $2/5$ and show that the response is roughly the same within the same Jain sequence, but can differ at large anisotropy for different sequences.
We study fluctuations and topological melting transitions of quantum Hall stripes near half-filling of intermediate Landau levels. Taking the stripe state to be an anisotropic Wigner crystal (AWC) allows us to identify the quantum Hall nematic state conjectured in previous studies of the 2D electron gas as an {\em anisotropic hexatic}. The transition temperature from the AWC to the quantum Hall nematic state is explicitly calculated, and a tentative phase diagram for the 2D electron gas near half-filling is suggested.
We generalize the notion of Haldane pseudopotentials to anisotropic fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems which are physically realized, e.g., in tilted magnetic field experiments or anisotropic band structures. This formalism allows us to expand any translation-invariant interaction over a complete basis, and directly reveals the intrinsic metric of incompressible FQH fluids. We show that purely anisotropic pseudopotentials give rise to new types of bound states for small particle clusters in the infinite plane, and can be used as a diagnostic of FQH nematic order. We also demonstrate that ge…
We analytically derived the effective two-body interaction for a finite thickness quantum Hall system with a harmonic perpendicular confinement and an in-plane magnetic field. The anisotropic effective interaction in the lowest Landau level (LLL) and first Landau level (1LL) are expanded in the basis of the generalized pseudopotentials (PPs), and we analyze how the coefficients of some prominent isotropic and anisotropic PPs depend on the thickness of the sample and the strength of the in-plane magnetic field. We also investigate the stability of the topological quantum Hall states, especially…
Model quantum Hall states including Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states are generalized into appropriate anisotropic form. The generalized states are exact zero-energy eigenstates of corresponding anisotropic two- or multi-body Hamiltonians, and explicitly illustrate the existence of geometric degrees of in the fractional quantum Hall effect. These generalized model quantum Hall states can provide a good description of the quantum Hall system with anisotropic interactions. Some numeric results of these anisotropic quantum Hall states are also presented.
At high magnetic fields, where the Fermi level lies in the N=0 lowest Landau level (LL), a clean two-dimensional electron system (2DES) exhibits numerous incompressible liquid phases which display the fractional quantized Hall effect (FQHE) (Das Sarma and Pinczuk, 1997). These liquid phases do not break rotational symmetry, exhibiting resistivities which are isotropic in the plane. In contrast, at lower fields, when the Fermi level lies in the $N\ge2$ third and several higher LLs, the 2DES displays a distinctly different class of collective states. In particular, near half filling of these hig…
We study fractional quantum Hall states in the cylinder geometry with open boundaries. We focus on principal fermionic 1/3 and bosonic 1/2 fractions in the case of hard-core interactions. The gap behavior as a function of the cylinder radius is analyzed. By adding enough orbitals to allow for edge modes we show that it is possible to measure the Luttinger parameter of the non-chiral liquid formed by the combination of the two counterpropagating edges when we add a small confining potential. While we measure a Luttinger exponent consistent with the chiral Luttinger theory prediction for the ful…
We construct a low energy effective theory of anisotropic fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states. We develop a formalism similar to that used in the bi-metric approach to massive gravity, and apply it to describe abelian anisotropic FQH states in the presence of external electromagnetic and geometric backgrounds. We derive a relationship between the shift, the Hall viscosity, and a new quantized coupling to anisotropy, which we term "anisospin". We verify this relationship by numerically computing the Hall viscosity for a variety of anisotropic quantum Hall states using the density matrix renorm…
The intrinsic spin Hall conductivity in a two dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is evaluated by taking account of anisotropic coupling between magnetic impurities and itinerant electrons. In our calculation Kubo's linear response formalism is employed and the vertex correction is considered. In the semiclassical limit $μ\gg 1/τ$, a non-vanishing spin Hall conductivity $σ^{}_{sH}$ is found to depend on the momentum relaxation time $τ$, spin-orbit splitting $Δ$ and the anisotropic coefficient of interaction between itinerant electrons and magnetic impurities. The clean lim…
We study the anisotropic effect of the Coulomb interaction on a 1/3-filling fractional quantum Hall system by using an exact diagonalization method on small systems in torus geometry. For weak anisotropy the system remains to be an incompressible quantum liquid, although anisotropy manifests itself in density correlation functions and excitation spectra. When the strength of anisotropy increases, we find the system develops a Hall-smectic-like phase with a one-dimensional charge density wave order and is unstable towards the one-dimensional crystal in the strong anisotropy limit. In all three …
In this work, we argue that an anisotropic interaction potential may stabilize anisotropic liquid phases of electrons even in a strong magnetic field regime where normally one expects to see only isotropic quantum Hall or isotropic Fermi liquid states. We use this approach to support a theoretical framework that envisions the possibility of an anisotropic liquid crystalline state of electrons in the lowest Landau level. In particular, we argue that an anisotropic liquid state of electrons may stabilize in the lowest Landau level close to the liquid-solid transition region at filling factor $ν=…
In recent experiments, external anisotropy has been a useful tool to tune different phases and study their competitions. In this paper, we look at the quantum Hall charge density wave states in the $N=2$ Landau level. Without anisotropy, there are two first-order phase transitions between the Wigner crystal, the $2$-electron bubble phase, and the stripe phase. By adding mass anisotropy, our analytical and numerical studies show that the $2$-electron bubble phase disappears and the stripe phase significantly enlarges its domain in the phase diagram. Meanwhile, a regime of stripe crystals that m…
We investigate the interplay between topological effects and Mott physics in two dimensions on a graphene-like lattice, via a tight-binding model containing an anisotropic spin-orbit coupling on the next-nearest-neighbour links and the Hubbard interaction. We thoroughly analyze the resulting phases, namely a topological band insulator phase or anisotropic quantum Spin Hall phase until moderate interactions, a Néel and Spiral phase at large interactions in the Mott regime, as well as the formation of a spin-orbital texture in the bulk at the Mott transition. The emergent magnetic orders at larg…
Rotationally invariant fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states have long been understood in terms of composite bosons or composite fermions. Recent investigations of both incompressible and compressible states in highly tilted fields, which renders them anisotropic, have revealed puzzling features which have so far defied quantitative explanation. The author's work with R. Shankar in constructing and analyzing an operator-based theory in the rotationally invariant FQHE is generalized here to the anisotropic case. We compute the effective anisotropies of many principal fraction states in the lowes…
In a heavy fermion system, there exists the anomalous Hall effect caused by localized $f$-orbital freedom, in addition to the normal Hall effect due to the Lorentz force. In 1994, we found that the Hall coefficient caused by the anomalous Hall effect ($R_H^{AHE}$) is predominant and the relation $R_H^{AHE} \propto ρ^2$ ($ρ$ is the electrical resistivity) holds at low temperatures in many compounds. In this work, we study the system where the magnetic susceptibility is highly anisotropic due to the strong crystalline electric field on $f$-orbitals. Interestingly, we find that $R_H^{AHE}$ is nea…
We investigate parity-odd non-dissipative transport in an anisotropic Dirac semi-metal in two spatial dimensions. The analysis is relevant for interacting electronic systems with merging Dirac points at charge neutrality. For such systems the dispersion relation is relativistic in one direction and non-relativistic in the other. We give a proposal how to calculate the Berry curvature for this system and use it to derive more than one odd viscosities, in contrast to rotationally invariant systems. We observe that in such a model the odd part of stress tensor is parameterised by two independent …
A systematic study of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the longitudinal and transverse resistivities of epitaxial thin films of magnetite (Fe3O4) is reported. The anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and the planar Hall effect (PHE) are sensitive to the in-plane orientation of current and magnetization with respect to crystal axes in a way consistent with the cubic symmetry of the system. We also show that the AMR exhibit sign reversal as a function of temperature, and that it shows significant field dependence without saturation up to 9 T. Our results provide a unified descript…
We probe the relationship between magnetism and "non-metallic" transport in the magnetically frustrated metal FeCrAs using the low-field Hall effect. We find that the low-field Hall coefficient is dependent on crystal orientation, and exhibits two temperature-induced sign reversals when the current is within the $ab$-plane. We suggest that these observations are due to scattering from magnetic fluctuations that become momentum-dependent near the onset of long-range magnetic order. It seems, however, that this additional spin-fluctuation scattering rides on top of the non-metallic resistivity, …
Haldane's geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states is generalized to compressible states. It is shown that anisotropy in the composite fermion Fermi surface is a direct reflection of this intrinsic geometry. A simple model is introduced in which the geometric parameter can be obtained exactly from other parameters including electron mass anisotropy. Our results compare favorably with recent measurements of anisotropy in composite fermion Fermi surface [D. Kamburov, Y. Liu, M. Shayegan, L. N. Pfeiffer, K. W. West, and K. W. Baldwin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 206801 (2013)]. Broader…
The microscopic wave functions of the composite fermion theory can incorporate electron mass anisotropy by a trivial rescaling of the coordinates. These wave functions are very likely adiabatically connected to the actual wave functions of the anisotropic fractional quantum Hall states. We show in this article that they possess the nice property that their energies can be analytically related to the previously calculated energies for the isotropic states through a universal scale factor, thus allowing an estimation of several observables in the thermodynamic limit for all fractional quantum Ha…
We present a study of Hall transport in semi-Dirac critical phases. The construction is based on a covariant formulation of relativistic systems with spatial anisotropy. Geometric data together with external electromagnetic fields is used to devise an expansion procedure that leads to a low-energy effective action consistent with the discrete $PT$ symmetry that we impose. We use the action to discuss terms contributing to the Hall transport and extract the coefficients. We also discuss the associated scaling symmetry.
We study a two-dimensional electron system where the electrons occupy two conduction band valleys with anisotropic Fermi contours and strain-tunable occupation. We observe persistent quantum Hall states at filling factors $ν= 1/3$ and 5/3 even at zero strain when the two valleys are degenerate. This is reminiscent of the quantum Hall ferromagnet formed at $ν= 1$ in the same system at zero strain. In the absence of a theory for a system with anisotropic valleys, we compare the energy gaps measured at $ν= 1/3$ and 5/3 to the available theory developed for single-valley, two-spin systems, and fin…
We study the effects of anisotropic interactions in the quantum Hall effect in the presence of a fourfold discrete rotational ($C_4$) symmetry. Employing the density matrix renormalization group technique on an infinite cylinder geometry (iDMRG), we calculate the anisotropy response of the Laughlin state at $ν=1/3$ and the composite-Fermi liquid (CFL) state at $ν=1/2$. We find that the anisotropy transferred from the interaction potential to the $ν=1/3$ state is stronger when compared to the complementary case of an anisotropic band. Further, the strength of anisotropy reduces as the interacti…
We have measured the Hall effect on recently synthesized single crystals of quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ, a well known charge transfer complex that has two kinds of conductive stacks: the donor (TTF) and the acceptor (TCNQ) chains. The measurements were performed in the temperature interval 30 K < T < 300 K and for several different magnetic field and current directions through the crystal. By applying the equivalent isotropic sample (EIS) approach, we have demonstrated the importance of the choice of optimal geometry for accurate Hall effect measurements. Our results show,…
We theoretically investigate the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) that requires neither a net magnetization nor an external magnetic field in collinear antiferromagnets. We show that such an emergent AHE is essentially caused by a ferroic ordering of the anisotropic magnetic dipole (AMD), which provides an effective coupling between ordered magnetic moments and electronic motion in the crystal. We demonstrate that the AMD is naturally induced by the antiferromagnetic ordering, in which the magnetic moments have a quadrupole spatial distribution. In view of the ferroic AMD ordering, we analyze the b…
A spin valve is a prototype of spin-based electronic devices found on ferromagnets, in which an antiferromagnet plays a supporting role. Recent findings in antiferromagnetic spintronics show that an antiferromagnetic order in single-phase materials solely governs dynamic transport, and antiferromagnets are considered promising candidates for spintronic technology. In this work, we demonstrated antiferromagnet-based spintronic functionality on an itinerant Ising antiferromagnet of Ca0.9Sr0.1Co2As2 by integrating nanoscale spin-valve-type structure and investigating anisotropic magnetic properti…
When a conduction electron couples with a non-coplanar localized magnetic moment, the realspace Berry curvature is exerted to cause the geometrical Hall effect, which is not simply proportional to the magnetization. So far, it has been identified in the case mostly where the non-coplanar magnetic order is present on the sublattice of conduction electrons. Here, we demonstrate that the geometrical Hall effect shows up even without long-range magnetic order of conduction electrons, as induced by non-coplanar exchange fields from the localized magnetic moments, in hole-doped phyrochlore molybdate…
Fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs) at even-denominator Landau level filling factors ($ν$) are of prime interest as they are predicted to host exotic, topological states of matter. We report here the observation of a FQHS at $ν=1/2$ in a two-dimensional electron system of exceptionally high quality, confined to a wide AlAs quantum well, where the electrons can occupy multiple conduction-band valleys with an anisotropic effective mass. The anisotropy and multi-valley degree of freedom offer an unprecedented tunability of the $ν=1/2$ FQHS as we can control both the valley occupancy via the ap…
Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are known to possess an internal metric degree of freedom that allows them to minimize their energy when contrasting geometries are present in the problem (e.g., electron band mass and dielectric tensor). We investigate the internal metric of several incompressible FQH states by probing its response to band mass anisotropy using infinite DMRG simulations on a cylinder geometry. We test and apply a method to extract the internal metric of a FQH state from its guiding center structure factor. We find that the response to band mass anisotropy is approximately …
Weyl semimetals are promising quantum materials that offer unique topological properties. Lately, it has been shown that laser-driven electron dynamics have characteristic signatures in two-dimensional and three-dimensional Dirac semimetals. The transition from Dirac to Weyl semimetal requires the breaking of either inversion or time-reversal symmetry. The present work shows that the laser-driven electron dynamics in a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry has intriguing features in its high-harmonic spectrum. It is found that the parity and magnitude of the non-zero Berry curvatur…
We uncover a strong anisotropy in both the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the magnetoresistance of the chiral spin states of Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. The AHE appearing below 1.5 K at zero magnetic field shows hysteresis which is most pronounced for fields cycled along the [111] direction. This hysteresis is compatible with the field-induced growth of domains composed by the 3-in 1-out spin states which remain coexisting with the 2-in 2-out spin ice manifold once the field is removed. Only for fields applied along the [111] direction, we observe a large positive magnetoresistance and Shubnikov de Ha…
Electron-electron interactions in half-filled high Landau levels in two-dimensional electron gases in a strong perpendicular magnetic field can lead to states with anisotropic longitudinal resistance. This longitudinal resitance is generally believed to arise from broken rotational invariance, which is indicated by charge density wave (CDW) order in Hartree-Fock calculations. We use the Hartree-Fock approximation to study the influence of externally tuned Landau level mixing on the formation of interaction induced states that break rotational invariance in two-dimensional electron and hole sys…
We present a study of the thermal Hall effect in the extended Heisenberg model with $XXZ$ anisotropy in the kagome lattice. This model has the particularity that, in the classical case, and for a broad region in parameter space, an external magnetic field induces a chiral symmetry breaking: the ground state is a doubly degenerate $q=0$ order with either positive or negative net chirality. Here, we focus on the effect of this chiral phase transition in the thermal Hall conductivity using Linear-Spin-Waves theory. We explore the topology and calculate the Chern numbers of the magnonic bands, obt…
Temperature- and field-dependent Hall effect measurements are reported for YbAgGe, a heavy fermion compound exhibiting a field-induced quantum phase transition, and for two other closely related members of the RAgGe series: a non-magnetic analogue, LuAgGe and a representative, ''good local moment'', magnetic material, TmAgGe. Whereas the temperature dependent Hall coefficient of YbAgGe shows behavior similar to what has been observed in a number of heavy fermion compounds, the low temperature, field-dependent measurements reveal well defined, sudden changes with applied field; in specific for …
Motivated by the recent experimental observation of quantum oscillations in the underdoped cuprates, we study the cyclotron and infrared Hall effective masses in an anisotropic Fermi liquid characterized by an angle-dependent quasiparticle residue Z_q, which models an arc-shaped Fermi surface. Our primary motivation is to explain the relatively large value of the cyclotron effective mass observed experimentally and its relation with the effective Hall mass. In the framework of a phenomenological model of an anisotropic Fermi liquid, we find that the cyclotron mass is enhanced by a factor <1/Z_…
We study a novel abelian gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions which has surprising theoretical and phenomenological features. The theory has a vanishing coefficient for the square of the electric field $e_i^2$, characteristic of a quantum critical point with dynamical critical exponent $z=2$, and a level-$k$ Chern-Simons coupling, which is {\it marginal} at this critical point. For $k=0$, this theory is dual to a free $z=2$ scalar field theory describing a quantum Lifshitz transition, but $k \neq 0$ renders the scalar description non-local. The $k \neq 0$ theory exhibits properties intermediate betw…
We report an investigation of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and anomalous Hall resistance (AHR) of Rh and Pt thin films sputtered on epitaxial Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG) ferromagnetic insulator films. For the Pt/YIG hybrid, large spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) along with a sizable conventional anisotropic magnetoresistance (CAMR) and a nontrivial temperature dependence of AHR were observed in the temperature range of 5-300 K. In contrast, a reduced SMR with negligible CAMR and AHR was found in Rh/YIG hybrid. Since CAMR and AHR are characteristics for all ferromagnetic metals, our resul…

One of the most dominant candidates for the paired quantum Hall (QH) state at filling factor $ν=5/2$ is the Moore-Read (MR) Pfaffian state. A salient problem, however, is that it does not occur exactly at the Coulomb interaction, but rather at a modified interaction, which favors particle-hole symmetry breaking. In an effort to find a better state, in this work, we investigate the possible connection between the paired QH state and the antisymmetrized bilayer ground state, which is inspired by the intriguing identity that the MR Pfaffian state is entirely equivalent to the antisymmetrized proj…
The confinement of the two dimensional electron gas (2DEG), preferential occupancy of the Ti 3d orbital and strong spin-orbit coupling at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface play a significant role in its emerging properties. Here we report a fourfold oscillation in the anisotropic magneto resistance (AMR) and the observation of planar Hall effect (PHE) at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterointerface. We evaluate the carrier confinement effects on the AMR and find that the fourfold oscillation appears only for the case of 2DEG system while it is twofold for the 3D system. As the fourfold oscillation …
We propose a family of Abelian quantum Hall states termed the non-diagonal states, which arise at filling factors $ν=p/2q$ for bosonic systems and $ν=p/(p+2q)$ for fermionic systems, with $p$ and $q$ being two coprime integers. Non-diagonal quantum Hall states are constructed in a coupled wire model, which shows an intimate relation to the non-diagonal conformal field theory and has a constrained pattern of motion for bulk quasiparticles, featuring a non-trivial interplay between charge symmetry and translation symmetry. The non-diagonal state is established as a distinctive symmetry-enriched …
We develop a first quantization description of fractional Chern insulators that is the dual of the conventional fractional quantum Hall (FQH) problem, with the roles of position and momentum interchanged. In this picture, FQH states are described by anisotropic FQH liquids forming in momentum-space Landau levels in a fluctuating magnetic field. The fundamental quantum geometry of the problem emerges from the interplay of single-body and interaction metrics, both of which act as momentum-space duals of the geometrical picture of the anisotropic FQH effect. We then present a novel broad class of…
SrRuO3 is an itinerant ferromagnet and in its thin film form when grown on miscut SrTiO3 it has Tc of ~ 150 K and strong uniaxial anisotropy. We measured both the Hall effect and the magnetoresistance (MR) of the films as a function of the angle between the applied field and the normal to the films at temperatures above Tc. We extracted the extraordinary Hall effect that is proportional to the perpendicular component of the magnetization and thus the MR for each angle of the applied field could be correlated with the magnitude and orientation of the induced magnetization. We successfully fit t…
