We prove for a two dimensional bounded domain that the Cauchy data for the Schroedinger equation measured on an arbitrary open subset of the boundary determines uniquely the potential. This implies, for the conductivity equation, that if we measure the current fluxes at the boundary on an arbitrary open subset of the boundary produced by voltage potentials supported in the same subset, we can determine uniquely the conductivity. We use Carleman estimates with degenerate weight functions to construct appropriate complex geometrical optics solutions to prove the results.
Via Carleman estimates we prove uniqueness and continuous dependence results for lateral Cauchy problems for linear integro-differential parabolic equations without initial conditions. The additional information supplied prescribes the conormal derivative of the temperature on a relatively open subset of the lateral boundary of the space-time domain.
In Part I of the paper, we prove non-uniqueness of the solution to the Cauchy problem of the Euler equations of an ideal incompressible fluid in dimension two with vorticity in some Lebesgue space. The radially symmetric external force is locally integrable with values in the same Lebesgue space.
In Part II of the paper, we prove linear instability of a certain class of radially symmetric flows of an ideal incompressible fluid in dimension two used in Part I
We study the Cauchy problem for the parabolic infinity Laplace equation. We prove a new comparison principle and obtain uniqueness of viscosity solutions in the class of functions with a polinomial growth at infinity, improving previous results obtained assuming a linear growth.
Consider classical solutions to the following Cauchy problem in a punctured space: $ &u_t=Δu -u^p \text{in} (R^n-\{0\})\times(0,\infty); & u(x,0)=g(x)\ge0 \text{in} R^n-\{0\}; &u\ge0 \text{in} (R^n-\{0\})\times[0,\infty). $ We prove that if $p\ge\frac n{n-2}$, then the solution to \eqref{abstract} is unique for each $g$. On the other hand, if $p<\frac n{n-2}$, then uniqueness does not hold when $g=0$; that is, there exists a nontrivial solution with vanishing initial data.
We discuss the Cauchy problem for anisotropic wave equations. Precisely, we address the question to know which kind of Cauchy data on the lateral boundary are necessary to guarantee uniqueness of solutions of an anisotropic wave equation. In the case where the uniqueness holds, the natural problem that arise in this context is to estimate the solutions, in some appropriate space, in terms of the Cauchy data. We aim in this paper to transfer, via a reduced Fourrier-Bros-Iagolnitzer transform, the known stability estimates for the Cauchy problem for elliptic equations to that for waves equations…

The existence and uniqueness in Hölder spaces of solutions of the Cauchy problem to parabolic integro-differential equation of the order α\in(0,2) is investigated. The principal part of the operator has kernel m(t,x,y)/|y|^{d+α} with a bounded nondegenerate m, Hölder in x and measurable in y. The result is applied to prove the uniqueness of the corresponding martingale problem.

Consider classical solutions to the parabolic reaction diffusion equation $$ &u_t =Lu+f(x,u), (x,t)\in R^n\times(0,\infty); &u(x,0) =g(x)\ge0, x\in R^n; &u\ge0, $$ where $$ L=\sum_{i,j=1}^na_{i,j}(x)\frac{\partial^2}{\partial x_i \partial x_j}+\sum_{i=1}^nb_i(x)\frac\partial{\partial x_i} $$ is a non-degenerate elliptic operator, $g\in C(R^n)$ and the reaction term $f$ converges to $-\infty$ at a super-linear rate as $u\to\infty$. We give a sharp minimal growth condition on $f$, independent of $L$, in order that there exist a universal, a priori upper bound for all solutions to the above Cauch…
We study the periodic Cauchy problem for an integrable equation with cubic nonlinearities introduced by V. Novikov. Like the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations, Novikov's equation has Lax pair representations and admits peakon solutions, but it has nonlinear terms that are cubic, rather than quadratic. We show the local well-posedness of the problem in Sobolev spaces and existence and uniqueness of solutions for all time using orbit invariants. Furthermore we prove a Cauchy-Kowalevski type theorem for this equation, that establishes the existence and uniqueness of real analytic solu…
We consider Cauchy's equation of motion for hyperelastic materials. The solution of this nonlinear initial-boundary value problem is the vector field which discribes the displacement which a particle of this material perceives when exposed to stress and external forces. This equation is of greatest relevance when investigating the behaviour of elastic, anisotropic composites and for the detection of defects in such materials from boundary measurements. This is why results on unique solvability and continuous dependence from the initial values are of large interest in materials research and str…
To study the existence and uniqueness of solutions to Cauchy-type problems for fractional q-difference equations with the bi-ordinal Hilfer fractional q-derivative which is an extension of the Hilfer fractional q-derivative. An approach is based on the equivalence of the nonlinear Cauchy-type problem with a nonlinear Volterra q-integral equation of the second kind. Applying an analog of Banach fixed point theorem we prove the uniqueness and the existence of the solution. Moreover, we present an explicit solution to the q-analog of the Cauchy problem for the linear case.
In this paper we derive a sufficient condition for the existence of a unique solution of a Cauchy type q-fractional problem (involving the fractional q-derivative of Riemann-Liouville type) for some nonlinear differential equations. The key technique is to first prove that this Cauchy type q-fractional problem is equivalent to a corresponding Volterra q-integral equation. Moreover, we define the $q$-analogue of the Hilfer fractional derivative or composite fractional derivative operator and prove some similar new equivalence, existence and uniqueness results as above. Finally, some examples ar…
Initial-boundary value problems for second order fully nonlinear PDEs with Caputo time fractional derivatives of order less than one are considered in the framework of viscosity solution theory. Associated boundary conditions are Dirichlet and Neumann, and they are considered in the strong sense and the viscosity sense, respectively. By a comparison principle and Perron's method, unique existence for the Cauchy-Dirichlet and Cauchy-Neumann problems are proved.
In this work, we prove the existence, uniqueness and smoothing properties of the solution to the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with Debye-Yukawa potential for probability measure initial datum.
We study the Cauchy problem for Fokker--Planck--Kolmogorov equations with unbounded and degenerate coefficients. Sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of solutions are indicated.
This note contains a representation formula for positive solutions of linear degenerate second-order equations of the form $$ \partial_t u (x,t) = \sum_{j=1}^m X_j^2 u(x,t) + X_0 u(x,t) \qquad (x,t) \in \mathbb{R}^N \times\, ]- \infty ,T[,$$ proved by a functional analytic approach based on Choquet theory. As a consequence, we obtain Liouville-type theorems and uniqueness results for the positive Cauchy problem.
We study existence and uniqueness of bounded solutions to a fractional nonlinear porous medium equation with a variable density, in one space dimension.
Given that the terminal condition is of at most linear growth, it is well known that a Cauchy problem admits a unique classical solution when the coefficient multiplying the second derivative (i.e., the volatility) is also a function of at most linear growth. In this note, we give a condition on the volatility that is necessary and sufficient for a Cauchy problem to admit a unique solution.
In this paper, the existence, uniqueness and regularity properties, Strichartz type estimates for solution of multipoint Cauchy problem for linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations with general elliptic leading part is obtained.
We study uniqueness of flows of probability measures solving the Cauchy problem for nonlinear Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation with unbounded coefficients. Sufficient conditions for uniqueness are indicated and examples of non-uniqueness are constructed.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of mild solutions for the polyatomic ellipsoidal BGK model, which is a relaxation type kinetic model describing the evolution of polyatomic gaseous system at the mesoscopic level.
We study the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for a fractional porous medium equation with a varying density. We establish existence of weak energy solutions; uniqueness and nonuniqueness is studied as well, according with the behavior of the density at infinity.
We consider the Cauchy problem for wave maps u: \R times M \to N for Riemannian manifolds, (M, g) and (N, h). We prove global existence and uniqueness for initial data that is small in the critical Sobolev norm in the case (M, g) = (\R^4, g), where g is a small perturbation of the Euclidean metric. The proof follows the method introduced by Statah and Struwe for proving global existence and uniqueness of small data wave maps u : \R \times \R^d \to N in the critical norm, for d at least 4. In our argument we employ the Strichartz estimates for variable coefficient wave equations established by …
In this paper, we prove existence and uniqueness of measure solutions for the Cauchy problem associated to the (vectorial) continuity equation with a non-local flow. We also give a stability result with respect to various parameters.
The aim of this article is to investigate the uniqueness of solution of an inverse problem for ultrahyperbolic equations. We first reduce the inverse problem to a Cauchy problem for an integro-differential equation and then by using a pointwise Carleman type inequality we prove the uniqueness.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy-type problem (1.1) involving Hilfer-Hadamard-type fractional derivative for a nonlinear fractional differential equation. We prove an equivalence between the Cauchy-type problem (1.1) and Volterra integral equation(VIE), existence, and uniqueness. We present a slight generalization for the Gronwall inequality which was used in studying the continuous dependence of a solution for the Cauchy-type problem (1.2).
For the first time, a globally convergent numerical method is presented for ill-posed Cauchy problems for quasilinear PDEs. The key idea is to use Carleman Weight Functions to construct globally strictly convex Tikhonov-like cost functionals.
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for second order strictly hyperbolic operators when the coefficients of the principal part are not Lipschitz continuous, but only "Log-Lipschitz" with respect to all the variables. This class of equation is invariant under changes of variables and therefore suitable for a local analysis. In particular, we show local existence, local uniqueness and finite speed of propagation for the noncharacteristic Cauchy problem.
In a recent work, Ionescu and Kenig proved that the Cauchy problem associatedto the Benjamin-Ono equation is well-posed in $L^2(\mathbb R)$. In this paper we give a simpler proof of Ionescu and Kenig's result, which moreover provides stronger uniqueness results. In particular, we prove unconditional well-posedness in $H^s(\mathbb R)$, for $s>1/4$.
In this paper, we use the method of Fourier analysis to derive the formula of the total energy for the Cauchy problem of the Cauchy-Navier elastodynamics wave equation describing the motion of an isotropic elastic body. The conservation law of the total energy is obtained and consequently, the global uniqueness of the solution to the problem is implied.
We prove local in time well-posedness for a class of quasilinear Hamiltonian KdV-type equations with periodic boundary conditions, more precisely we show existence, uniqueness and continuity of the solution map. We improve the previous result in \cite{Mietka}, generalising the considered class of equations and improving the regularity assumption on the initial data.
We study the Cauchy problem for a multidimensional scalar conservation law with merely continuous flux vector in the class of Besicovitch almost periodic functions. The existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions are established. We propose also the necessary and sufficient condition for the decay of almost periodic entropy solutions as time $t\to+\infty$.
We quantify the uniqueness of continuation from Cauchy or interior data. Our approach consists in extending the existing results in the linear case. As by product we obtain a new stability estimate in the linear case. We also show the so-called strong uniqueness of continuation and the uniqueness of continuation from a set of positive measure. These results are derived by using a linearization procedure.
The integrable Novikov equation can be regarded as one of the Camassa-Holm-type equations with cubic nonlinearity. In this paper, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of the Hölder continuous energy conservative solutions for the Cauchy problem of the Novikov equation.
The aim of the paper is to investigate on some questions of local regularity of a suitable weak solution to the Navier-Stokes Cauchy problem. The results are obtained in the wake of the ones, well known, by Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg.
In this paper we provide a complete analogy between the Cauchy-Lipschitz and the DiPerna-Lions theories for ODE's, by developing a local version of the DiPerna-Lions theory. More precisely, we prove existence and uniqueness of a maximal regular flow for the DiPerna-Lions theory using only local regularity and summability assumptions on the vector field, in analogy with the classical theory, which uses only local regularity assumptions. We also study the behaviour of the ODE trajectories before the maximal existence time. Unlike the Cauchy-Lipschitz theory, this behaviour crucially depends on t…
In this paper we show, in dimension n >=3, that knowledge of the Cauchy data for the Schroedinger equation in the presence of a magnetic potential, measured on possibly very small subsets of the boundary, determines uniquely the magnetic field and the electric potential.
The paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem for a semi-linear hyperdissipative heat equation in Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces which is related to the generalized Gauss-Weierstrass semi-group via Duhamel's principle. Using caloric smoothing properties of the semi-group we prove existence and uniqueness of mild and strong solutions which are local in time. Moreover, we study well-posedness of the problem.
In this note we obtain a unique continuation result for the differential inequality $|\bar{\partial}u|\leq|Vu|$, where $\bar{\partial}=(i\partial_y+\partial_x)/2$ denotes the Cauchy-Riemann operator and $V(x,y)$ is a function in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$.
The uniqueness of parabolic Cauchy problems is nowadays a classical problem and since Hadamard \cite{Ha} these kind of problems are known to be ill-posed and even severely ill-posed. Until now there are only few partial results concerning the quantification of the stability for parabolic Cauchy problems. In the present article, we bring the complete answer to this issue, provided that the space domain has finite diameter with respect to the geodesic distance and assuming that solutions are sufficiently smooth.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the Cauchy problem for the periodic fifth order KP-I equation \[\partial_t u - \partial_x^5 u -\partial_x^{-1}\partial_y^2u + u\partial_x u = 0,~(t,x,y)\in\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}^2\] We prove global well-posedness for constant $x$ mean value initial data in the space $\mathbb{E} = \{u\in L^2,~\partial_x^2 u \in L^2,~\partial_x^{-1}\partial_y u \in L^2\}$ which is the natural energy space associated with this equation.
In this paper, the integral initial value problems for Boussinesq type equations are studied. The equation include the general differential operators. The existence, uniqueness and regularity properties of solution of these problems are obtained. By choosing differential operators including in the equation, the regularity properties of the Cauchy problem for different type of Boussinesg equations are studied.
In this paper, the existence, the uniqueness and estimates of solution to the integral Cauchy problem for linear and nonlinear abstract wave equations are proved. The equation includes a linear operator A defined in a Banach space E, in which by choosing E and A we can obtain numerous classis of nonlocal initial value problems for wave equations which occur in a wide variety of physical systems.
We consider a system of evolutionary equations that is capable of describing certain viscoelastic effects in linearized yet nonlinear models of solid mechanics. The essence of the paper is that the constitutive relation, involving the Cauchy stress, the small strain tensor and the symmetric velocity gradient, is given in an implicit form. For a large class of implicit constitutive relations we establish the existence and uniqueness of a global-in-time large-data weak solution. We then focus on the class of so-called limiting strain models, i.e., models for which the magnitude of the strain ten…
The existence and uniqueness in Sobolev spaces of solutions of the Cauchy problem to parabolic integro-differential equation of the order α\in(0,2) is investigated. The principal part of the operator has kernel m(t,x,y)/|y|^{d+α} with a bounded nondegenerate m, Hölder in x and measurable in y. The lower order part has bounded and measurable coefficients. The result is applied to prove the existence and uniqueness of the corresponding martingale problem.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the coefficients of a general second-order elliptic operator in two dimensions by measuring the corresponding Cauchy data on an arbitrary open subset of the boundary. We show that one can determine the coefficients of the operator up to natural obstructions such as conformal invariance, gauge transformations and diffeomorphism invariance. We use the main result to prove that the curl of the magnetic field and the electric potential are uniquely determined by measuring partial Cauchy data associated to the magnetic Schroedinger equation measured on…
In this paper, the multipoint Cauchy problem for nonlocal nonlinear wave type equatıons are studied. The equation involves a convolution integral operator with a general kernel function whose Fourier transform is nonnegative. We establish local and global existence and uniqueness of solutions assuming enough smoothness on the initial data together with some growth conditions on the nonlinear term
The manuscript is concerned with uniqueness and stability for inverse source problem of determining spatially varying factor $f(x)$ of a source term given by $R(t)f(x)$ with suitable given $R(t)$ in the right hand side of the Schrödinger equation with time independent coefficients. In order to establish these results we provide a simple proof of a logarithmic conditional stability of the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger equation with time-independent coefficients and the zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on the whole boundary and a proof of uniqueness of solution to the Cauchy problem for t…
In this paper, the existence and uniqueness of solution of the Cauchy problem for abstract Boussinesq equation is obtained. By applying this result, the Cauchy problem for systems of Boussinesq equations of finite or infinite orders are studied
We study the linear Vlasov equation with a given electric field $E \in \mathcal{S}$, where $\mathcal{S}$ is the space of Schwartz functions. The associated damped partial differential equation has a unique tempered solution, which fixes the needed Cauchy datum. This tempered solution then converges to the causal solution of the linear Vlasov equation when the damping parameter goes to zero. This result allows us to define the plasma conductivity operator $σ$, which gives the current density $j = σ(E)$ induced by the electric field $E$. We prove that $σ$ is continuous from $\mathcal{S}$ to its …
We show that the Hunter-Saxton equation $u_t+uu_x=\frac14\big(\int_{-\infty}^x dμ(t,z)- \int^{\infty}_x dμ(t,z)\big)$ and $μ_t+(uμ)_x=0$ has a unique, global, weak, and conservative solution $(u,μ)$ of the Cauchy problem on the line.
In the paper, we consider the Cauchy problem of the non-resistive MHD equations in homogeneous Besov spaces. We prove the local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the non-resistive MHD equations by using the iterative scheme and compactness arguments. Our obtained result improves considerably the recent results in \cite{C,W}.
We obtain weighted uniform estimates for the gradient of the solutions to a class of linear parabolic Cauchy problems with unbounded coefficients. Such estimates are then used to prove existence and uniqueness of the mild solution to a semi-linear backward parabolic Cauchy problem, where the differential equation is the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation of a suitable optimal control problem. Via backward stochastic differential equations, we show that the mild solution is indeed the Value Function of the controlled equation and that the feedback law is verified.
