In this paper, the integral initial value problems for Boussinesq type equations are studied. The equation include the general differential operators. The existence, uniqueness and regularity properties of solution of these problems are obtained. By choosing differential operators including in the equation, the regularity properties of the Cauchy problem for different type of Boussinesg equations are studied.
This paper is a continuation of a previous work by two of the Authors on long time existence for Boussinesq systems modeling the propagation of long, weakly nonlinear water waves. We provide proofs on examples not considered previously in particular we prove a long time well-posedness result for a delicate "strongly dispersive" Boussinesq system.
We consider the Cauchy problem for an evolution equation modeling bidirectional surface waves in a convecting fluid. Under small condition on the initial value, the existence and asymptotic behavior of global solutions in some time weighted spaces are established by the contraction mapping principle.
We prove in this paper a long time existence result for a modified Boussinesq-Peregrine equation in one dimension, describing the motion of Water Waves in shallow water, in the case of a non flat bottom. We first give a local existence result for the original Boussinesq Peregrine equation as derived by Boussinesq and Peregrine in all dimensions. We then introduce a new model which has formally the same precision as the Boussinesq-Peregrine equation, and give a local existence result in all dimensions. We finally prove a long time existence result in dimension 1 for this new equation, without a…
We consider the initial value problem (IVP) associated to a Boussinesq type system. After rewriting the system in an equivalent form of coupled KdV-type equations, we prove that this is locally well-posed in $(H^s(\R^2))^4$, $s>3/2$, using sharp smoothing estimates. Consequently we obtain the local well-posedness result for the original system in $H^s\times \mathcal{V}^{s+1}$ for $s>3/2$ (see below for the definition of $\mathcal{V}^{s}$).
In this paper, we study the viscous Boussinesq equation in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, which describes the propagation of small amplitude and long waves on the surface of water with viscous effects. Concerning the linearized Cauchy problem, some qualitative properties of solutions including $L^m-L^q$ estimates with $1\leqslant m\leqslant q\leqslant \infty$, inviscid limits and asymptotic profiles of solution with respect to the small viscosity are investigated by means of the Fourier analysis and the WKB method. For another, by applying some fractional order interpolations in the harmonic …
In this paper, the existence and uniqueness of solution of the Cauchy problem for abstract Boussinesq equation is obtained. By applying this result, the Cauchy problem for systems of Boussinesq equations of finite or infinite orders are studied
In this paper, we study the analytical smoothing effect of Cauchy problem for the incompressible Boussinesq equations. Precisely, we use the Fourier method to prove that the Sobolev H 1-solution to the incompressible Boussinesq equations in periodic domain is analytic for any positive time. So the incompressible Boussinesq equation admet exactly same smoothing effect properties of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.
We study the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional dispersive system of Boussinesq type which models weakly nonlinear long wave surface waves. We establish the local well-posedness and ill-posedness of solutions to the system. We also provide criteria for the formation of singularities.
We consider ill-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the generalized Boussinesq and Kawahara equations. We prove norm inflation with general initial data, an improvement over the ill-posedness results by Geba et al., Nonlinear Anal. 95 (2014), 404-413 for the generalized Boussinesq equations and by Kato, Adv. Differential Equations 16 (2011), no. 3-4, 257-287 for the Kawahara equation.
We consider the reactive Boussinesq equations in a slanted cylinder, with zero stress boundary conditions and arbitrary Rayleigh number. We show that the equations have non-planar traveling front solutions that propagate at a constant speed. We also establish uniform upper bounds on the burning rate and the flow velocity for general front-like initial data for the Cauchy problem.
We consider the initial-value problem for the regularized Boussinesq-Ostrovsky equation in the class of periodic functions. Validity of the weakly-nonlinear solution, given in terms of two counter-propagating waves satisfying the uncoupled Ostrovsky equations, is examined. We prove analytically and illustrate numerically that the improved accuracy of the solution can be achieved at the time scales of the Ostrovsky equation if solutions of the linearized Ostrovsky equations are incorporated into the asymptotic solution. Compared to the previous literature, we show that the approximation error c…
In this paper we deal with the long time existence for the Cauchy problem associated to BBM-type Boussinesq systems of equations which are asymptotic models for long wave, small amplitude gravity surface water waves. As opposed to previous papers devoted to the long time existence issue, we consider initial data with nontrivial behaviour at innity which may be used to model bore propagation.
In this paper we are concerned with a nonlocal system to model the propagation of internal waves in a two-layer interface problem with rigid lid assumption and under a Boussinesq regime for both fluids. The main goal is to investigate aspects of well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the deviation of the interface and the velocity, as well as the existence of solitary wave solutions and some of their properties.
We regard the Cauchy problem for a particular Whitham-Boussinesq system modelling surface waves of an inviscid incompressible fluid layer. We are interested in well-posedness at a very low level of regularity. We derive dispersive and Strichartz estimates, and implement them together with a fixed point argument to solve the problem locally. Hamiltonian conservation guarantees global well-posedness for small initial data in the one dimensional settings.
In this paper we deal with the long time existence for the Cauchy problem associated to some asymptotic models for long wave, small amplitude gravity surface waves. We generalize some of the results that can be found in the literature devoted to the study of Boussinesq systems by implementing an energy method on spectrally localized equations. In particular, we obtain better results in terms of the regularity level required to solve the initial value problem on large time scales.
We consider in this paper the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated to two-dimensional dispersive systems of Boussinesq type which model weakly nonlinear long wave surface waves. We emphasize the case of the {\it strongly dispersive} ones with focus on the "KdV-KdV" system which possesses the strongest dispersive properties and which is a vector two-dimensional extension of the classical KdV equation.
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the two-dimensional (2D) incompressible Boussinesq equations with fractional Laplacian dissipation and thermal diffusion. Invoking the energy method and several commutator estimates, we get the global regularity result of the 2D Boussinesq equations as long as $1-α<β< \min\Big\{\fracα{2},\,\, \frac{3α-2}{2α^{2}-6α+5}, \,\,\frac{2-2α}{4α-3}\Big\}$ with $0.77963\thickapproxα_{0}<α<1$. As a result, this result is a further improvement of the previous two works \cite{MX,YXX}.
As a continuation of the previous work [40], in this paper we focus on the Cauchy problem of the two-dimensional (2D) incompressible Boussinesq equations with fractional Laplacian dissipation. We give an elementary proof of the global regularity of the smooth solutions of the 2D Boussinesq equations with a new range of fractional powers of the Laplacian. The argument is based on the nonlinear lower bounds for the fractional Laplacian established in [12]. Consequently, this result significantly improves the recent works [12, 38, 40].
In this article, we develop the local Cauchy theory for the gravity water waves system, for rough initial data which do not decay at infinity. We work in the context of $L^2$-based uniformly local Sobolev spaces introduced by Kato. We prove a classical well-posedness result (without loss of derivatives). Our result implies also a local well-posedness result in Hölder spaces (with loss of $d/2$ derivatives). As an illustration, we solve a question raised by Boussinesq on the water waves problem in a canal. We take benefit of an elementary observation to show that the strategy suggested by Bouss…
We regard the Cauchy problem for a particular Whitham-Boussinesq system modelling surface waves of an inviscid incompressible fluid layer. The system can be seen as a weak nonlocal dispersive perturbation of the shallow water system. The proof of well-posedness relies on energy estimates. However, due to the symmetry lack of the nonlinear part, in order to close the a priori estimates one has to modify the traditional energy norm in use. Hamiltonian conservation provides with global well-posedness at least for small initial data in the one dimensional settings.
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the generalized Boussinesq equation with initial data in modulation spaces $M^{s}_{p^\prime,q}(\mathbb{R}^n),$ $n\geq 1.$ After a decomposition of the Boussinesq equation in a $2\times 2$-nonlinear system, we obtain the existence of global and local solutions in several classes of functions with values in $ M^s_{p,q}\times D^{-1}JM^s_{p,q}$ spaces for suitable $p,q$ and $s,$ including the special case $p=2,q=1$ and $s=0.$ Finally, we prove some results of scattering and asymptotic stability in the framework of modulation spaces.
We show that the Cauchy problem for the defocusing generalized Boussinesq equation $u_{tt}-u_{xx}+u_{xxxx}-(|u|^{2k}u)_{xx}=0$, $k\geq1$, on the real line is globally well-posed in $H^{s}(\R)$ for $s>1-({1}/{3k})$. We use the "$I$-method" to define a modification of the energy functional that is "almost conserved" in time. Our result extends the previous one obtained by Farah and Linares (2010 \textit{J. London Math. Soc.} \textbf{81} 241-254) when $k=1$.
This paper is devoted to the study of the Cauchy problem for the Boussinesq system with partial viscosity in dimension $N\geq3.$ First we prove a global existence result for data in Lorentz spaces satisfying a smallness condition which is at the scaling of the equations. Second, we get a uniqueness result in Besov spaces with {\it negative} indices of regularity (despite the fact that there is no smoothing effect on the temperature). The proof relies on a priori estimates with loss of regularity for the nonstationary Stokes system with convection. As a corollary, we obtain a global existence a…
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for $(abcd)$-Boussinesq system posed on one- and two-dimensional Euclidean spaces. This model, initially introduced by Bona, Chen, and Saut, describes a small-amplitude waves on the surface of an inviscid fluid, and derived as a first-order approximation of incompressible, irrotational Euler equations. We mainly establish the ill-posedness of the system under various parameter regimes, which generalize the result of the one-dimensional BBM-BBM case by Chen and Liu. Most of results established here, we obtain the optimal result for two-dimensional B…
In this paper we address the Cauchy problem for two systems modeling the propagation of long gravity waves in a layer of homogeneous, incompressible and inviscid fluid delimited above by a free surface, and below by a non-necessarily flat rigid bottom. Concerning the Green-Naghdi system, we improve the result of Alvarez-Samaniego and Lannes (Invent. Math., 2008) in the sense that much less regular data are allowed, and no loss of derivatives is involved. Concerning the Boussinesq-Peregrine system, we improve the lower bound on the time of existence provided by M{é}sognon-Gireau (Adv. Different…
Through Borel summation methods, we analyze the Boussinesq equations for coupled fluid velocity and temperature fields. We prove that an equivalent system of integral equations in the Borel variable p dual to 1/t has a unique solution in a class of exponentially bounded functions, implying the existence of a classical solution to the Boussinesq equations in a complex t-region that includes a real positive time axis segment. For analytic initial data and forcing, it is shown that the solution is Borel summable, implying that that formal series in powers of t is Gevrey-1 asymptotic, and within t…
A hyperbolic problem wich combines a classical(Dirichlet) and a non-local contraint is considered. The existence and uniqueness of strong solutions are proved,we use a functionnal analysis method based on a priori estimate and on the density of the range of the operator generated by the considered problem.
We construct solutions to p-Laplace type equations in unbounded Lipschitz domains in the plane with prescribed boundary data in appropriate fractional Sobolev spaces. Our approach builds on a Cauchy integral representation formula for solutions.
We are concerned with conservation laws and integral relations associated with rational solutions of the Boussinesq equation, a soliton equation solvable by inverse scattering which was first introduced by Boussinesq in 1871. The rational solutions are logarithmic derivatives of a polynomial, are algebraically decaying and have a similar appearance to rogue-wave solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. For these rational solutions the constants of motion associated with the conserved quantities are zero and they have some interesting integral relations which depend on the tota…
We study the chord-arc Jordan curves that satisfy the Cotlar-type inequality $T_*(f)\lesssim M^2(Tf),$ where $T$ is the Cauchy transform, $T_*$ is the maximal Cauchy transform and $M$ is the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function. Under the background assumption of asymptotic quasi-conformality we find a characterization of such curves in terms of the smoothness of a parametrization of the curve.
This paper considers the temperature patch problem for the incompressible Boussinesq system with no diffusion and viscosity in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^2$. We prove that for initial patches with $W^{2,\infty}$ boundary the curvature remains bounded for all time. The proof explores new cancellations that allow us to bound $\nabla^2u$, even for those components given by time dependent singular integrals with kernels with nonzero mean on circles. In addition, we give a different proof of the $C^{1+γ}$ regularity result in [23], $0<γ<1$, using the scale of Sobolev spaces for the velocity. Furth…
This work deals with the local rapid exponential stabilization for a Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type introduced by J. Bona, M. Chen and J.-C. Saut. This is a model for the motion of small amplitude long waves on the surface of an ideal fluid. Here, we will consider the Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type posed on a finite domain, with homogeneous Dirichlet--Neumann boundary controls acting at the right end point of the interval. Our goal is to build suitable integral transformations to get a feedback control law that leads to the stabilization of the system. More precisely, we will prove that …
The 2d Boussinesq equations model large scale atmospheric and oceanic flows. Whether its solutions develop a singularity in finite-time remains a classical open problem in mathematical fluid dynamics. In this work, blowup from smooth nontrivial initial velocities in stagnation-point form solutions of this system is established. On an infinite strip $Ω=\{(x,y)\in[0,1]\times\mathbb{R}^+\}$, we consider velocities of the form $u=(f(t,x),-yf_x(t,x))$, with scalar temperature\, $θ=yρ(t,x)$. Assuming $f_x(0,x)$ attains its global maximum only at points $x_i^*$ located on the boundary of $[0,1]$, gen…
Recently, a new singularity formation scenario for the 3D axi-symmetric Euler equation and the 2D inviscid Boussinesq system has been proposed by Hu and Luo based on extensive numerical simulations [15, 16]. As the firrst step to understand the scenario, models with simplified sign-definite Biot-Savart law and forcing have recently been studied in [7, 6, 8, 12, 14, 18]. In this paper, we aim to bring back one of the complications encountered in the original equation - the sign changing kernel in the Biot-Savart law. This makes analysis harder, as there are two competing terms in the fluid velo…
Through Borel summation methods, we analyze two different variations of the Navier-Stokes equation --the Boussinesq equation and the magnetic Benard equation. This method has previously been applied to the Navier-Stokes equation. We prove that an equivalent system of integral equations in each case has a unique solution, which is exponentially bounded for p in R^{+}, p being the Laplace dual variable of 1/t. This implies the local existence of a classical solution in a complex t-region that includes a real positive time (t)-axis segment. In this formalism, global existence of PDE solutions bec…
We show that blow up of solutions with arbitrary positive initial energy of the Cauchy problem for the abstract wacve eqation of the form $Pu_{tt}+Au=F(u) \ (*)$ in a Hilbert space, where $P,A$ are positive linear operators and $F(\cdot)$ is a continuously differentiable gradient operator can be obtained from the result of H.A. Levine on the growth of solutions of the Cauchy problem for (*). This result is applied to the study of inital boundary value problems for nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations, generalized Boussinesq equations and nonlinear plate equations. A result on blow up of solutions …
In this paper we consider some new classes of integral equations that arise from Lie symmetry analysis. Specifically, we consider the task of obtaining solutions of a Cauchy problem for some classes of second order hyperbolic partial differential equations. Our analysis leads to new integral equations of non-convolution type, which can be solved by classical methods. We derive solutions of these integral equations, which in turn lead to solutions of the associated Cauchy problems.
We study certain generalized Cauchy integral formulas for gradients of solutions to second order divergence form elliptic systems, which appeared in recent work by P. Auscher and A. Rosén. These are constructed through functional calculus and are in general beyond the scope of singular integrals. More precisely, we establish such Cauchy formulas for solutions $u$ with gradient in weighted $L_2(\R^{1+n}_+,t^αdtdx)$ also in the case $|α|<1$. In the end point cases $α= \pm 1$, we show how to apply Carleson duality results by T. Hytönen and A. Rosén to establish such Cauchy formulas.
We consider the Cauchy problem and the source problem for normally hyperbolic operators on the Minkowski spacetime, and study the determination of solutions from their integrals along null geodesics. For the Cauchy problem, we give a new proof of the stable determination result obtained in Vasy and Wang [12]. For the source problem, we obtain stable determination for sources with space-like singularities. Our proof is based on the microlocal analysis of the normal operator of the light ray transform composed with the parametrix for strictly hyperbolic operators.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy-type problem (1.1) involving Hilfer-Hadamard-type fractional derivative for a nonlinear fractional differential equation. We prove an equivalence between the Cauchy-type problem (1.1) and Volterra integral equation(VIE), existence, and uniqueness. We present a slight generalization for the Gronwall inequality which was used in studying the continuous dependence of a solution for the Cauchy-type problem (1.2).
This study deals with the analysis of the Cauchy problem of a general class of nonlocal nonlinear equations modeling the bi-directional propagation of dispersive waves in various contexts. The nonlocal nature of the problem is reflected by two different elliptic pseudodifferential operators acting on linear and nonlinear functions of the dependent variable, respectively. The well-known doubly dispersive nonlinear wave equation that incorporates two types of dispersive effects originated from two different dispersion operators falls into the category studied here. The class of nonlocal nonlinea…
Let $C_Γ$ be the Cauchy integral operator on a Lipschitz curve $Γ$. In this article, the authors show that the commutator $[b,C_Γ]$ is bounded (resp., compact) on the Morrey space $L^{p,\,λ}(\mathbb R)$ for any (or some) $p\in(1, \infty)$ and $λ\in(0, 1)$ if and only if $b\in {\rm BMO}(\mathbb R)$ (resp., ${\rm CMO}(\mathbb R)$). As an application, a factorization of the classical Hardy space $H^1(\mathbb R)$ in terms of $C_Γ$ and its adjoint operator is obtained.
We generalize the notion of harmonic conjugate functions and Hilbert transforms to higher dimensional euclidean spaces, in the setting of differential forms and the Hodge-Dirac system. These conjugate functions are in general far from being unique, but under suitable boundary conditions we prove existence and uniqueness of conjugates. The proof also yields invertibility results for a new class of generalized double layer potential operators on Lipschitz surfaces and boundedness of related Hilbert transforms.
We give a local integral formula, valid on general curved space-times, for the characteristic Cauchy problem for the Dirac equation with arbitrary spin using the method developed by Friedlander in his book "the wave equation on a curved spacetime" (1975). The results obtained by Penrose in the flat case in "Null hypersurface initial data for classical fields of arbitrary spin for general relativity" (Gen. Rel. Grav 1980) are recovered directly. It is expected that this method can be used to obtain sharp estimates for the characteristic Cauchy problem for the Dirac equation.
In the present study we prove rigorously that in the long-wave limit, the unidirectional solutions of a class of nonlocal wave equations to which the improved Boussinesq equation belongs are well approximated by the solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation over a long time scale. This general class of nonlocal wave equations model bidirectional wave propagation in a nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium whose constitutive equation is given by a convolution integral. To justify the Camassa-Holm approximation we show that approximation errors remain small over a long time interval. To be more …
The study of the Dirac system and second-order elliptic equations with complex-valued coefficients on the plane leads to bicomplex Vekua equations. To the difference of complex pseudoanalytic (generalized analytic) functions the theory of bicomplex functions has not been developed. Such basic facts as the similarity principle or the Liouville theorem in general are no longer available due to the presence of zero divisors in the algebra of bicomplex numbers. We develop a theory of bicomplex pseudoanalytic formal powers analogous to the developed by Bers and obtain Cauchy's integral formula in t…
For the linear partial differential equation $P(\partial_x,\partial_t)u=f(x,t)$, where $x\in\mathbb{R}^n,\;t\in\mathbb{R}^1$, with $P(\partial_x,\partial_t)$ is $\prod^m_{i=1}(\frac{\partial}{\partial{t}}-a_iP(\partial_x))$ or $\prod^m_{i=1}(\frac{\partial^2}{\partial{t^2}}-a_i^2P(\partial_x))$, the authors give the analytic solution of the cauchy problem using the abstract operators $e^{tP(\partial_x)}$ and $\frac{\sinh(tP(\partial_x)^{1/2})}{P(\partial_x)^{1/2}}$. By representing the operators with integrals, explicit solutions are obtained with an integral form of a given function.
We give an algebraic description of wave fronts that appear in strictly hyperbolic Cauchy problem. Concrete form of definig function of wave front issued from initial algebraic variety is obtained by the aid of the Gauss-Manin systems satisfied by Gel'fand -Leray integrals.
