We consider a system of evolutionary equations that is capable of describing certain viscoelastic effects in linearized yet nonlinear models of solid mechanics. The essence of the paper is that the constitutive relation, involving the Cauchy stress, the small strain tensor and the symmetric velocity gradient, is given in an implicit form. For a large class of implicit constitutive relations we establish the existence and uniqueness of a global-in-time large-data weak solution. We then focus on the class of so-called limiting strain models, i.e., models for which the magnitude of the strain tensor is known to remain small a priori, regardless of the magnitude of the Cauchy stress tensor. For this class of models, a new technical difficulty arises, which is that the Cauchy stress is only an integrable function over its domain of definition, resulting in the underlying function spaces being nonreflexive and thus the weak compactness of bounded sequences of elements of these spaces is lost. Nevertheless, even for problems of this type we are able to provide a satisfactory existence theory, as long as the initial data have finite elastic energy and the boundary data fulfill natural compatibility conditions.
We consider the linear system of viscoelasticity with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. First we prove a Carleman estimate with boundary values of solutions of viscoelasticity system. Since a solution $u$ under consideration is not assumed to have compact support, in the decoupling of the Lamé operator by introducing div $u$ and rot $u$, we have no boundary condition for them, so that we have to carry out arguments by a pseudodifferential operator. Second we apply the Carleman estimate to an inverse source problem of determining a spatially varying factor of the external source in …
We consider the equation of motion for one-dimensional nonlinear viscoelasticity of strain-rate type under the assumption that the stored-energy function is $λ$-convex, which allows for solid phase transformations. We formulate this problem as a gradient flow, leading to existence and uniqueness of solutions. By approximating general initial data by those in which the deformation gradient takes only finitely many values, we show that under suitable hypotheses on the stored-energy function the deformation gradient is instantaneously bounded and bounded away from zero. Finally, we discuss the op…
We consider positive solutions of a fractional Lane-Emden type problem in a bounded domain with Dirichlet conditions. We show that uniqueness and nondegeneracy hold for the asymptotically linear problem in general domains. Furthermore, we also prove that all the known uniqueness and nondegeneracy results in the local case extend to the nonlocal regime when the fractional parameter s is sufficiently close to 1.

In this paper, our goal is to define a measure valued solution of compressible Navier--Stokes--Fourier system for a heat conducting fluid with Dirichlet boundary condition for temperature in a bounded domain. The definition is based on the weak formulation of entropy inequality and ballistic energy inequality. Moreover, we obtain the weak(measure valued)-strong uniqueness property of this solution with the help of relative energy.
The existence and uniqueness of solution to a one-dimensional hyperbolic integro-differential problem arising in viscoelasticity is here considered. The kernel, in the linear viscoelasticity equation, represents the relaxation function which is characteristic of the considered material. Specifically, the case of a kernel, which does not satisfy the classical regularity requirements is analysed. This choice is suggested by applications according to the literature to model a wider variety of materials. A notable example of kernel, not satisfying the classical regularity requirements, is represen…
In this paper we introduce a system coupling a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a system of viscoelasticity, modeling the interaction between short and long waves, acting for instance on media like plasmas or polymers. We prove the existence and uniqueness of local (in time) strong solutions and the existence of global weak solutions for the corresponding Cauchy problem. In particular we extend previous results in [Nohel \emph{et. al.}, Commun. Part. Diff. Eq., 13 (1988)] for the quasilinear system of viscoelasticity. We finish with some numerical computations to illustrate our results.
We prove $L^{p}$-uniqueness of Dirichlet operators for Gibbs measures on the path space $C(\mathbb R, \mathbb R^{d})$ associated with exponential type interactions in infinite volume by extending an SPDE approach presented in previous work by the last two named authors. We also give an SPDE characterization of the corresponding dynamics. In particular, we prove existence and uniqueness of a strong solution for the SPDE, though the self-interaction potential is not assumed to be differentiable, hence the drift is possibly discontinuous. As examples, to which our results apply, we mention the st…
A system of segregated boundary-domain integral equations (BDIEs) is obtained from the Dirichlet problem for the diffusion equation in non-homogeneous media defined on an exterior two-dimensional domain. We use a parametrix different from the one employed by in (Dufera, 2019). The system of BDIEs is formulated in terms of parametrix-based surface and volume potentials whose mapping properties are analysed in weighted Sobolev spaces. The system of BDIEs is shown to be equivalent to the original boundary value problem and uniquely solvable in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces suitable for infi…
In this paper we consider the problem of determining an unknown pair $λ$, $μ$ of piecewise constant Lamé parameters inside a three dimensional body from the Dirichlet to Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz continuous dependence of $λ$ and $μ$ from the Dirichlet to Neumann map.
The paper considers direct and inverse elastic scattering from a cavity in homogeneous medium with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. For direct scattering, existence and uniqueness are derived by variation approach. For inverse scattering, Fr$\acute{\rm e}$chet derivatives of the solution operators are investigated, which give local stability for Dirichlet case.
We are concerned with Dirichlet problems of the form $${\mathop{\rm div}\nolimits} (|D u|^{p-2}Du)+f(u)=0\ \mbox{ in }Ω,\qquad u=0\ \mbox{ on }\partialΩ, $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$, $1<p<n$ and $f$ is a continuous function with supercritical growth from the viewpoint of the Sobolev embedding. In particular, if $n=2$ and $γ:[a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^2$ is a smooth curve such that $γ(t_1)\neqγ(t_2)$ for $t_1\neq t_2$, we prove that, for $\varepsilon>0$ small enough, there exists a unique solution of the Dirichlet problem in the domain $Ω=Ω^Γ_\varepsilon=\{(x_1,x_2)\in\…
In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness theorem of the exterior Dirichlet problem for special Lagrangian equations with prescribed asymptotic behavior at infinity.
Initial-boundary value problems for second order fully nonlinear PDEs with Caputo time fractional derivatives of order less than one are considered in the framework of viscosity solution theory. Associated boundary conditions are Dirichlet and Neumann, and they are considered in the strong sense and the viscosity sense, respectively. By a comparison principle and Perron's method, unique existence for the Cauchy-Dirichlet and Cauchy-Neumann problems are proved.
We consider the inverse boundary value problem of recovering piecewise homogeneous elastic tensor and piecewise homogeneous mass density from a localized lateral Dirichlet-to-Neumann or Neumann-to-Dirichlet map for the elasticity equation in the space-time domain. We derive uniqueness for identifying these tensor and density on all domains of homogeneity that may be reached from the part of the boundary where the measurements are taken by a chain of subdomains whose successive interfaces contain a curved portion.
We study the existence and uniqueness for weak solutions to some classes of anisotropic elliptic Dirichlet problems with data belonging to the natural dual space.
We study uniqueness of Dirichlet problems of second order divergence-form elliptic systems with transversally independent coefficients on the upper half-space in absence of regularity of solutions. To this end, we develop a substitute for the fundamental solution used to invert elliptic operators on the whole space by means of a representation via abstract single layer potentials. We also show that such layer potentials are uniquely determined.
We study the Neumann and Dirichlet problems for the total variation flow in metric measure spaces. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and study their asymptotic behaviour. Furthermore, in the Neumann problem we provide a notion of solutions which is valid for $L^1$ initial data, as well as prove their existence and uniqueness. Our main tools are the first-order linear differential structure due to Gigli and a version of the Gauss-Green formula.
We consider the classical Mindlin-Eringen linear micromorphic model with a new strictly weaker set of displacement boundary conditions. The new consistent coupling condition aims at minimizing spurious influences from arbitrary boundary prescription for the additional microdistortion field P. In effect, P is now only required to match the tangential derivative of the classical displacement u which is known at the Dirichlet-part of the boundary. We derive the full boundary condition, in adding the missing Neumann condition on the Dirichlet-part. We show existence and uniqueness of the static pr…
We discuss the inverse problem of determining the, possibly anisotropic, conductivity of a body $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ when the so-called Neumann-to-Dirichlet map is locally given on a non empty curved portion $Σ$ of the boundary $\partialΩ$. We prove that anisotropic conductivities that are \textit{a-priori} known to be piecewise constant matrices on a given partition of $Ω$ with curved interfaces can be uniquely determined in the interior from the knowledge of the local Neumann-to-Dirichlet map.
We consider inverse boundary value problems for elliptic equations of second order of determining coefficients by Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on subboundaries, that is, the mapping from Dirichlet data supported on $\partialΩ\setminus Γ_-$ to Neumann data on $\partialΩ\setminus Γ_+$. First we prove uniqueness results in three dimensions under some conditions such as $\bar{Γ_+ \cup Γ_-} = \partialΩ$. Next we survey uniqueness results in two dimensions for various elliptic systems for arbitrarily given $Γ_- = Γ_+$. Our proof is based on complex geometric optics solutions which are constructed by a C…
We study the recovery of piecewise analytic density and stiffness tensor of a three-dimensional domain from the local dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We give global uniqueness results if the medium is transversely isotropic with known axis of symmetry or orthorhombic with known symmetry planes on each subdomain. We also obtain uniqueness of a fully anisotropic stiffness tensor, assuming that it is piecewise constant and that the interfaces which separate the subdomains have curved portions. The domain partition need not to be known. Precisely, we show that a domain partition consisting of …
We are mainly concerned with equations of the form $-Lu=f(x,u)+μ$, where $L$ is an operator associated with a quasi-regular possibly nonsymmetric Dirichlet form, $f$ satisfies the monotonicity condition and mild integrability conditions, and $μ$ is a bounded smooth measure. We prove general results on existence, uniqueness and regularity of probabilistic solutions, which are expressed in terms of solutions to backward stochastic differential equations. Applications include equations with nonsymmetric divergence form operators, with gradient perturbations of some pseudodifferential operators an…
We investigate the homogeneous Dirichlet problem in uniformly convex domains for a large class of degenerate elliptic equations with singular zero order term. In particular we establish sharp existence and uniqueness results of positive viscosity solutions.
We show the $L^r(\mathbb{R}^d, μ)$-uniqueness for any $r \in (1, 2]$ and the essential self-adjointness of a Dirichlet operator $Lf = Δf +\langle \frac{1}ρ\nabla ρ, \nabla f \rangle$, $f \in C_0^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with $d \geq 3$ and $μ=ρdx$. In particular, $\nabla ρ$ is allowed to be in $L^d_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^d, \mathbb{R}^d)$ or in $L^{2+\varepsilon}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^d, \mathbb{R}^d)$ for some $\varepsilon>0$, while $ρ$ is required to be locally bounded below and above by strictly positive constants. The main tools in this paper are elliptic regularity results for divergence and non-dive…
We study existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations, in bounded domains. We show that there exists a unique solution which satisfies possibly inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. To this purpose some barrier functions are properly introduced and used.
We consider a second-order hyperbolic equation on an open bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\geq2$, with $C^2$-boundary $Γ=\paΩ=\bar{Γ_0\cupΓ_1}$, $Γ_0\capΓ_1=\emptyset$, subject to non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions on the entire boundary $Γ$. We then study the inverse problem of determining the interior damping coefficient of the equation by means of an additional measurement of the Dirichlet boundary trace of the solution, in a suitable, explicit sub-portion $Γ_1$ of the boundary $Γ$, and over a computable time interval $T>0$. Under sharp conditions on the complementary pa…
We study the Dirichlet problem for first order hyperbolic quasi-linear functional PDEs on a simply connected bounded domain of $\R^2$, where the domain has an interior outflow set and a mere inflow boundary. While the question of existence of a solution has already been answered in its predecessor, the present paper discusses the uniqueness and continuous dependence on the coefficients of the PDE. Under the assumption that the functional dependence is causal, we are able to derive a contraction principle which is the key to proof uniqueness and continuous dependence. Such a causal functional d…
In this paper we develop a Gidas-Ni-Nirenberg technique for polyharmonic equations and systems of Lane-Emden type. As far as we are concerned with Dirichlet boundary conditions, we prove uniqueness of solutions up to eighth order equations, namely which involve the fourth iteration of the Laplace operator. Then, we can extend the result to arbitrary polyharmonic operators of any order, provided some natural boundary conditions are satisfied but not for Dirichlet's: the obstruction is apparently a new phenomenon and seems due to some loss of information though far from being clear. When the pol…
We consider the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the Schrödinger equation with a potential in a bounded Lipschitz domain in three or more dimensions. We show that the integral of the potential over a two-plane is determined by the Cauchy data of certain exponentially growing solutions on any neighborhood of the intersection of the two-plane with the boundary.
Segregated direct boundary-domain integral equations (BDIEs) based on a parametrix and associated with the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems for the linear stationary diffusion partial differential equation with a variable coefficient are formulated. The PDE right hand sides belong to the Sobolev space $H^{-1}(Ω)$ or $\tilde H^{-1}(Ω)$, when neither classical nor canonical co-normal derivatives are well defined. Equivalence of the BDIEs to the original BVP, BDIE solvability, solution uniqueness/non-uniqueness, and as well as Fredholm property and invertibility of the BDIE operators…
We consider space-time quantum fields with exponential/trigonometric interactions. In the context of Euclidean quantum field theory, the former and the latter are called the Hoegh-Krohn model and the Sine-Gordon model, respectively. The main objective of the present paper is to construct infinite dimensional diffusion processes which solve modified stochastic quantization equations for these quantum fields on the two-dimensional torus by the Dirichlet form approach and to prove strong uniqueness of the corresponding Dirichlet operators.
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for the heat equation with a nonsmooth coefficient of conductivity which models the displacement of a moving body inside a nonhomogeneous background. We prove the uniqueness of the moving inclusion from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator by using a dynamical probe method.
We prove the uniqueness of solutions to Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps with images in a small geodesic ball of the target manifold. As a consequence, we show that such maps have Hoelder continuous derivatives. This gives an extension of a result by S. Hildebrandt et al concerning harmonic maps.
We consider the identification of nonlinear diffusion coefficients of the form $a(t,u)$ or $a(u)$ in quasi-linear parabolic and elliptic equations. Uniqueness for this inverse problem is established under very general assumptions using partial knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The proof of our main result relies on the construction of a series of appropriate Dirichlet data and test functions with a particular singular behavior at the boundary. This allows us to localize the analysis and to separate the principal part of the equation from the remaining terms. We therefore do not requir…
In this paper we show that Markov uniqueness for symmetric pre-Dirichlet operators $L$ follows from the uniqueness of the corresponding Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation (FPKE). Since in recent years a considerable number of uniqueness results for FPKE's have been achieved, we obtain new Markov uniqueness results in concrete cases. A selection of such will be presented in this paper. They include cases with killing and with degenerate diffusion coefficients.
For a class of fully nonlinear equations having second order operators which may be singular or degenerate when the gradient of the solutions vanishes, and having first order terms with power growth, we prove the existence and uniqueness of suitably defined viscosity solution of Dirichlet problem and we further show that it is a Lipschitz continuous function.
In this paper, we prove uniqueness of solutions of mean field equations with general boundary conditions for the critical and subcritical total mass regime, extending the earlier results for null Dirichlet boundary condition. The proof is based on new Bol's inequalities for weak radial solutions obtained from rearrangement of the solutions.
We examine the equation \[Δ^2 u = λf(u) \qquad Ω, \] with either Navier or Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show some uniqueness results under certain constraints on the parameter $ λ$. We obtain similar results for the sytem {equation*} \{{array}{rrl} -Δu &=& λf(v) \qquad Ω, -Δv &=& γg(u) \qquad Ω, u&=& v = 0 \qquad \partial Omega. {array}. {equation*}
We study a Dirichlet problem in the entire space for some nonlocal degenerate elliptic operators with internal nonlinearities. With very mild assumptions on the boundary datum, we prove existence and uniqueness of the solution in the viscosity sense. If we further assume uniform ellipticity then the solution is shown to be classical, and even smooth if both the operator and the boundary datum are smooth.
In this paper we investigate the uniqueness of solutions of the steady planar Navier-Stokes equations with different boundary conditions in the exterior domain. For a class of incompressible flow with constant vorticity, we prove the uniqueness of the solution under the enhanced Navier boundary conditions. At the same time, some counterexamples are given to show that the uniqueness of the solution fails under the Navier boundary conditions. For the general incompressible flow with Dirichlet boundary condition, we prove various sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the solution.
In this paper, we mainly establish the existence and uniqueness theorem for solutions of the exterior Dirichlet problem for a class of fully nonlinear second-order elliptic equations related to the eigenvalues of the Hessian, with prescribed generalized symmetric asymptotic behavior at infinity. Moreover, we give some new results for the Hessian equations, Hessian quotient equations and the special Lagrangian equations, which have been studied previously.
Let $u_{g}$ the unique solution of a parabolic variational inequality of second kind, with a given $g$. Using a regularization method, we prove, for all $g_{1}$ and $g_{2}$, a monotony property between $μu_{g_{1}} + (1-μ)u_{g_{2}}$ and $u_{μg_{1} + (1-μ)g_{2}}$ for $μ\in [0, 1]$. This allowed us to prove the existence and uniqueness results to a family of optimal control problems over $g$ for each heat transfer coefficient $h>0$, associated to the Newton law, and of another optimal control problem associated to a Dirichlet boundary condition. We prove also, when $h\to +\infty$, the strong conv…
We consider the inverse boundary value problem for the steady state convection diffusion equation. We prove that a velocity field $V$, is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, when $V \in C^{0,γ} (Ω)$, $2/3< γ\leq 1$, i.e. when $V$ is a Hölder continuous vector field with $2/3< γ\leq 1$.
We show existence and uniqueness for a linearized water wave problem in a two dimensional domain $G$ with corner, formed by two semi-axis $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ which intersect under an angle $α\in (0,π]$. The existence and uniqueness of the solution is proved by considering an auxiliary mixed problem with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The latter guarantees the existence of the Dirichlet to Neumann map. The water wave boundary value problem is then shown to be equivalent to an equation like $v_{tt}+gΛv=P$ with initial conditions, where $t$ stands for time, $g$ is the gravitational consta…
We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé parameters and the density of a three-dimensional elastic body from the local time-harmonic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz stability of this inverse problem when the Lamé parameters and the density are assumed to be piecewise constant on a given domain partition.
We consider uniqueness in an inverse Schrödinger problem in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ given the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on part of the boundary. On the remaining boundary we impose a new type of singular boundary condition with unknown parameter. Owing to recent results on this class of boundary conditions, we discuss the necessity of an extra point condition to well-define the data for the inverse problem. Our results are two-fold. At a single frequency the inverse problem displays non-uniqueness, since an unknown boundary condition can spoil `seeing' the Schrödinger potential via t…
