On the Existence and Uniqueness of Solution of Boundary-Domain Integral Equations for the Dirichlet Problem for the Non-Homogeneous Heat Transfer Equation defined on a 2D Unbounded Domain
A system of segregated boundary-domain integral equations (BDIEs) is obtained from the Dirichlet problem for the diffusion equation in non-homogeneous media defined on an exterior two-dimensional domain. We use a parametrix different from the one employed by in (Dufera, 2019). The system of BDIEs is formulated in terms of parametrix-based surface and volume potentials whose mapping properties are analysed in weighted Sobolev spaces. The system of BDIEs is shown to be equivalent to the original boundary value problem and uniquely solvable in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces suitable for infinite domains.
In this paper we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian $(-Δ_{\mathbb R^{n+k}})^{s}$, with $s\in (0, 1)$, on bounded domains in $\mathbb R^{n+k}$ that become unbounded in the last $k$-directions. A dimension reduction phenomenon is observed and described via $Γ$-convergence.
We study the obstacle problem for unbounded sets in a proper metric measure space supporting a (p,p)-Poincare inequality. We prove that there exists a unique solution. We also prove that if the measure is doubling and the obstacle is continuous, then the solution is continuous, and moreover p-harmonic in the set where it does not touch the obstacle. This includes, as a special case, the solution of the Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic functions with Sobolev type boundary data.
We establish the uniqueness and regularity of weak (and very weak) solutions to a class of cross diffusion systems which is inspired by models in mathematical biology/ecology, in particular the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model in population biology. No boundedness assumption on these solutions is supposed here as known techniques for scalar equations such as maximum/comparison principles are generally unavailable for systems. Furthermore, for planar domains we show that unbounded weak solutions satisfying mild integrability conditions are in fact smooth.
We consider positive solutions of a fractional Lane-Emden type problem in a bounded domain with Dirichlet conditions. We show that uniqueness and nondegeneracy hold for the asymptotically linear problem in general domains. Furthermore, we also prove that all the known uniqueness and nondegeneracy results in the local case extend to the nonlocal regime when the fractional parameter s is sufficiently close to 1.
We prove uniqueness in the inverse conductivity problem for uniformly elliptic conductivities in $W^{s,p}(Ω)$, where $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ is Lipschitz, $3\leq n \leq 6$, and $s$ and $p$ are such that $ W^{s,p}(Ω)\not \subset W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$. In particular, we obtain uniqueness for conductivities in $W^{1,n}(Ω)$ ($n=3,4$). This improves on the result of the author and Tataru, who assumed that the conductivity is Lipschitz.
In this paper, our goal is to define a measure valued solution of compressible Navier--Stokes--Fourier system for a heat conducting fluid with Dirichlet boundary condition for temperature in a bounded domain. The definition is based on the weak formulation of entropy inequality and ballistic energy inequality. Moreover, we obtain the weak(measure valued)-strong uniqueness property of this solution with the help of relative energy.
We prove uniqueness for the Vlasov-Poisson system in two and three dimensions under the condition that the $L^p$ norms of the macroscopic density growth at most linearly with respect to $p$. This allows for solutions with logarithmic singularities. We provide explicit examples of initial data that fulfill the uniqueness condition and that exhibit a logarithmic blow-up. In the gravitational two-dimensional case, such states are intimately related to radially symmetric steady solutions of the system. Our method relies on the Lagrangian formulation for the solutions, exploiting the second-order s…
We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of nonlinear elliptic problems under Dirichlet boundary conditions and mixed (Dirichlet, Neumann) boundary conditions on domains becoming unbounded. We make intensive use of Picone identity to overcome nonlinearity complications. Altogether the use of Picone identity makes the proof easier with respect to the known proof in the linear case. Surprisingly the asymptotic behavior under mixed boundary conditions critically differs from the case of pure Dirichlet boundary conditions for some class of problems.
We consider a class of stationary viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations as $$ \left\{\begin{array}{l} \la u-{\rm div}(A(x) \nabla u)=H(x,\nabla u)\mbox{in }Ω, u=0{on}\partialΩ\end{array} \right. $$ where $\la\geq 0$, $A(x)$ is a bounded and uniformly elliptic matrix and $H(x,ξ)$ is convex in $ξ$ and grows at most like $|ξ|^q+f(x)$, with $1 < q < 2$ and $f \in \elle {\frac N{q'}}$. Under such growth conditions solutions are in general unbounded, and there is not uniqueness of usual weak solutions. We prove that uniqueness holds in the restricted class of solutions satisfying a suitable energy--typ…
We prove $L^{p}$-uniqueness of Dirichlet operators for Gibbs measures on the path space $C(\mathbb R, \mathbb R^{d})$ associated with exponential type interactions in infinite volume by extending an SPDE approach presented in previous work by the last two named authors. We also give an SPDE characterization of the corresponding dynamics. In particular, we prove existence and uniqueness of a strong solution for the SPDE, though the self-interaction potential is not assumed to be differentiable, hence the drift is possibly discontinuous. As examples, to which our results apply, we mention the st…
In this paper we investigate the long-time behavior of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations of the type $du = (Au + f(u))dt + σ(u) dW(t)$, where $A$ is an elliptic operator, $f$ and $σ$ are nonlinear maps and $W$ is an infinite dimensional nuclear Wiener process. The emphasis is on unbounded domains. Under the assumption that the nonlinear function $f$ possesses certain dissipative properties, this equation is known to have a solution with an expectation value which is uniformly bounded in time. Together with some compactness property, the existence of such a solution implies the existence …

In this paper we consider the problem of determining an unknown pair $λ$, $μ$ of piecewise constant Lamé parameters inside a three dimensional body from the Dirichlet to Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz continuous dependence of $λ$ and $μ$ from the Dirichlet to Neumann map.
The paper considers direct and inverse elastic scattering from a cavity in homogeneous medium with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. For direct scattering, existence and uniqueness are derived by variation approach. For inverse scattering, Fr$\acute{\rm e}$chet derivatives of the solution operators are investigated, which give local stability for Dirichlet case.
This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic source problems in an unbounded domain with dynamical boundary surface data of Dirichlet kind. The measurement data are taken at a surface far away from the source support. We prove uniqueness in recovering source terms of the form $f(x)g(t)$ and $f(x_1,x_2,t) h(x_3)$, where $g(t)$ and $h(x_3)$ are given and $x=(x_1, x_2, x_3)$ is the spatial variable in three dimensions. Without these a priori information, we prove that the boundary data of a family of solutions can be used to recover general source terms depending on both time and spatial variabl…
We investigate the qualitative properties of solution to the Zaremba type problem in unbounded domain for the non-divergence elliptic equation with possible degeneration at infinity. The main result is Phragmén-Lindelöf type principle on growth/decay of a solution at infinity depending on both the structure of the Neumann portion of the boundary and the "thickness" of its Dirichlet portion. The result is formulated in terms of so-called $s$-capacity of the Dirichlet portion of the boundary, while the Neumann boundary should satisfy certain "admissibility" condition in the sequence of layers co…
In this paper we derive quantitative uniqueness estimates at infinity for solutions to an elliptic equation with unbounded drift in the plane. More precisely, let $u$ be a real solution to $Δu+W\cdot\nabla u=0$ in ${\mathbf R}^2$, where $W$ is real vector and $\|W\|_{L^p({\mathbf R}^2)}\le K$ for $2\le p<\infty$. Assume that $\|u\|_{L^{\infty}({\mathbf R}^2)}\le C_0$ and satisfies certain a priori assumption at $0$. Then $u$ satisfies the following asymptotic estimates at $R\gg 1$ \[ \inf_{|z_0|=R}\sup_{|z-z_0|<1}|u(z)|\ge \exp(-C_1R^{1-2/p}\log R)\quad\text{if}\quad 2<p<\infty \] and \[ \inf_…
We consider a second order differential operator $\mathscr{A}$ on an (typically unbounded) open and Dirichlet regular set $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and subject to nonlocal Dirichlet boundary conditions of the form \[ u(z) = \int_Ωu(x)μ(z, dx) \quad \mbox{ for } z\in \partial Ω. \] Here, $μ: \partialΩ\to \mathscr{M}(Ω)$ is a $σ(\mathscr{M}(Ω), C_b(Ω))$-continuous map taking values in the probability measures on $Ω$. Under suitable assumptions on the coefficients in $\mathscr{A}$, which may be unbounded, we prove that a realization $A_μ$ of $\mathscr{A}$ subject to the nonlocal boundary condition,…
We are concerned with Dirichlet problems of the form $${\mathop{\rm div}\nolimits} (|D u|^{p-2}Du)+f(u)=0\ \mbox{ in }Ω,\qquad u=0\ \mbox{ on }\partialΩ, $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$, $1<p<n$ and $f$ is a continuous function with supercritical growth from the viewpoint of the Sobolev embedding. In particular, if $n=2$ and $γ:[a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^2$ is a smooth curve such that $γ(t_1)\neqγ(t_2)$ for $t_1\neq t_2$, we prove that, for $\varepsilon>0$ small enough, there exists a unique solution of the Dirichlet problem in the domain $Ω=Ω^Γ_\varepsilon=\{(x_1,x_2)\in\…
We prove uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering in the case the density of the medium has an unbounded gradient across $Σ\subseteqΓ=\partialΩ$, where $Ω$ is a bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with a Lipschitz boundary. This follows from a uniqueness result in inverse scattering for Schrödinger operators with singular $δ$-type potential supported on the surface $Γ$ and of strength $α\in L^{p}(Γ)$, $p>2$.
The Perron method for solving the Dirichlet problem for $p$-harmonic functions is extended to unbounded open sets in the setting of a complete metric space with a doubling measure supporting a $p$-Poincaré inequality, $1<p<\infty$. The upper and lower ($p$-harmonic) Perron solutions are studied for $p$-parabolic open sets. It is shown that continuous functions and quasicontinuous Dirichlet functions are resolutive (i.e., that their upper and lower Perron solutions coincide) and that the Perron solution coincides with the $p$-harmonic extension. It is also shown that Perron solutions are invari…
Initial boundary value problems for the three dimensional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation posed on unbounded 3D grooves were considered. The existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions as well as their exponential decay have been established.
We study uniqueness of Dirichlet problems of second order divergence-form elliptic systems with transversally independent coefficients on the upper half-space in absence of regularity of solutions. To this end, we develop a substitute for the fundamental solution used to invert elliptic operators on the whole space by means of a representation via abstract single layer potentials. We also show that such layer potentials are uniquely determined.
We study uniqueness of flows of probability measures solving the Cauchy problem for nonlinear Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation with unbounded coefficients. Sufficient conditions for uniqueness are indicated and examples of non-uniqueness are constructed.
In this article we address the issue of uniqueness for differential and algebraic operator Riccati equations, under a distinctive set of assumptions on their unbounded coefficients. The class of boundary control systems characterized by these assumptions encompasses diverse significant physical interactions, all modeled by systems of coupled hyperbolic/parabolic partial differential equations. The proofs of uniqueness provided tackle and overcome the obstacles raised by the peculiar regularity properties of the composite dynamics. These results supplement the theories of the finite and infinit…
We consider the inverse problem of determining the time independent scalar potential of the dynamic Schrödinger equation in an infinite cylindrical domain from one boundary Neumann observation of the solution. We prove Hölder stability by choosing the Dirichlet boundary condition suitably.
In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness theorem of the exterior Dirichlet problem for special Lagrangian equations with prescribed asymptotic behavior at infinity.
Initial-boundary value problems for second order fully nonlinear PDEs with Caputo time fractional derivatives of order less than one are considered in the framework of viscosity solution theory. Associated boundary conditions are Dirichlet and Neumann, and they are considered in the strong sense and the viscosity sense, respectively. By a comparison principle and Perron's method, unique existence for the Cauchy-Dirichlet and Cauchy-Neumann problems are proved.
We consider the inverse boundary value problem of recovering piecewise homogeneous elastic tensor and piecewise homogeneous mass density from a localized lateral Dirichlet-to-Neumann or Neumann-to-Dirichlet map for the elasticity equation in the space-time domain. We derive uniqueness for identifying these tensor and density on all domains of homogeneity that may be reached from the part of the boundary where the measurements are taken by a chain of subdomains whose successive interfaces contain a curved portion.
We study the existence and uniqueness for weak solutions to some classes of anisotropic elliptic Dirichlet problems with data belonging to the natural dual space.
Given a class of nonautonomous elliptic operators $\A(t)$ with unbounded coefficients, defined in $\overline{I \times \Om}$ (where $I$ is a right-halfline or $I=\R$ and $\Om\subset \Rd$ is possibly unbounded), we prove existence and uniqueness of the evolution operator associated to $\A(t)$ in the space of bounded and continuous functions, under Dirichlet and first order, non tangential homogeneous boundary conditions. Some qualitative properties of the solutions, the compactness of the evolution operator and some uniform gradient estimates are then proved.
We consider inverse boundary value problems for elliptic equations of second order of determining coefficients by Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on subboundaries, that is, the mapping from Dirichlet data supported on $\partialΩ\setminus Γ_-$ to Neumann data on $\partialΩ\setminus Γ_+$. First we prove uniqueness results in three dimensions under some conditions such as $\bar{Γ_+ \cup Γ_-} = \partialΩ$. Next we survey uniqueness results in two dimensions for various elliptic systems for arbitrarily given $Γ_- = Γ_+$. Our proof is based on complex geometric optics solutions which are constructed by a C…
We study the Neumann and Dirichlet problems for the total variation flow in metric measure spaces. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and study their asymptotic behaviour. Furthermore, in the Neumann problem we provide a notion of solutions which is valid for $L^1$ initial data, as well as prove their existence and uniqueness. Our main tools are the first-order linear differential structure due to Gigli and a version of the Gauss-Green formula.
We introduce a generalized index for certain meromorphic, unbounded, operator-valued functions. The class of functions is chosen such that energy parameter dependent Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps associated to uniformly elliptic partial differential operators, particularly, non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators, on bounded Lipschitz domains, and abstract operator-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh $M$-functions and Donoghue-type $M$-functions corresponding to closed extensions of symmetric operators belong to it. The principal purpose of this paper is to prove index formulas that relate the difference of the…
Using three different notions of generalized principal eigenvalue of linear second order elliptic operators in unbounded domains, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of the maximum principle, as well as for the existence of positive eigenfunctions satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions. Relations between these principal eigenvalues, their simplicity and several other properties are further discussed.
We study a class of nonlinear elliptic problems with Dirichlet conditions in the framework of the Sobolev anisotropic spaces with variable exponent, involving an anisotropic operator on an unbounded domain $Ω\subset \>I\!\!R^{N}\>(N \geq 2)\>$. We prove the existence of entropy solutions avoiding sign condition and coercivity on the lowers order terms.
In this paper we study inverse boundary value problems with partial data for the bi-harmonic operator with first order perturbation. We consider two types of subsets of $\mathbb{R}^{n}(n\geq 3)$, one is an infinite slab, the other is a bounded domain. In the case of a slab, we show that, from Dirichlet and Neumann data given either on the different boundary hyperplanes of the slab or on the same boundary hyperplane, one can uniquely determine the magnetic potential and the electric potential. In the case of a bounded domain, we show the unique determination of the magnetic potential and the el…
We consider stochastic evolution equations in Hilbert spaces with merely measurable and locally bounded drift term $B$ and cylindrical Wiener noise. We prove pathwise (hence strong) uniqueness in the class of global solutions. This paper extends our previous paper (Da Prato, Flandoli, Priola and M. Rockner, Annals of Prob., published online in 2012) which generalized Veretennikov's fundamental result to infinite dimensions assuming boundedness of the drift term. As in our previous paper pathwise uniqueness holds for a large class, but not for every initial condition. We also include an applica…
We show the $L^r(\mathbb{R}^d, μ)$-uniqueness for any $r \in (1, 2]$ and the essential self-adjointness of a Dirichlet operator $Lf = Δf +\langle \frac{1}ρ\nabla ρ, \nabla f \rangle$, $f \in C_0^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with $d \geq 3$ and $μ=ρdx$. In particular, $\nabla ρ$ is allowed to be in $L^d_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^d, \mathbb{R}^d)$ or in $L^{2+\varepsilon}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^d, \mathbb{R}^d)$ for some $\varepsilon>0$, while $ρ$ is required to be locally bounded below and above by strictly positive constants. The main tools in this paper are elliptic regularity results for divergence and non-dive…
We consider the classical Mindlin-Eringen linear micromorphic model with a new strictly weaker set of displacement boundary conditions. The new consistent coupling condition aims at minimizing spurious influences from arbitrary boundary prescription for the additional microdistortion field P. In effect, P is now only required to match the tangential derivative of the classical displacement u which is known at the Dirichlet-part of the boundary. We derive the full boundary condition, in adding the missing Neumann condition on the Dirichlet-part. We show existence and uniqueness of the static pr…
We study uniqueness of solutions to degenerate parabolic problems, posed in bounded domains, where no boundary conditions are imposed. Under suitable assumptions on the operator, uniqueness is obtained for solutions that satisfy an appropriate integral condition; in particular, such condition holds for possibly unbounded solutions belonging to a suitable weighted $L^1$ space.
We discuss the inverse problem of determining the, possibly anisotropic, conductivity of a body $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ when the so-called Neumann-to-Dirichlet map is locally given on a non empty curved portion $Σ$ of the boundary $\partialΩ$. We prove that anisotropic conductivities that are \textit{a-priori} known to be piecewise constant matrices on a given partition of $Ω$ with curved interfaces can be uniquely determined in the interior from the knowledge of the local Neumann-to-Dirichlet map.
Given a Schrödinger differential expression on an exterior Lipschitz domain we prove strict inequalities between the eigenvalues of the corresponding selfadjoint operators subject to Dirichlet and Neumann or Dirichlet and mixed boundary conditions, respectively. Moreover, we prove a strict inequality between the eigenvalues of two different elliptic differential operators on the same domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
We study the recovery of piecewise analytic density and stiffness tensor of a three-dimensional domain from the local dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We give global uniqueness results if the medium is transversely isotropic with known axis of symmetry or orthorhombic with known symmetry planes on each subdomain. We also obtain uniqueness of a fully anisotropic stiffness tensor, assuming that it is piecewise constant and that the interfaces which separate the subdomains have curved portions. The domain partition need not to be known. Precisely, we show that a domain partition consisting of …
