In this article we address the issue of uniqueness for differential and algebraic operator Riccati equations, under a distinctive set of assumptions on their unbounded coefficients. The class of boundary control systems characterized by these assumptions encompasses diverse significant physical interactions, all modeled by systems of coupled hyperbolic/parabolic partial differential equations. The proofs of uniqueness provided tackle and overcome the obstacles raised by the peculiar regularity properties of the composite dynamics. These results supplement the theories of the finite and infinite time horizon linear-quadratic problem devised by the authors jointly with Lasiecka, as the unique solution to the Riccati equation enters the closed loop form of the optimal control.
In this paper we first consider a linear time invariant systems with almost periodic forcing term. We propose a new deterministic quadratic control problem, motivated by Da-Prato. With the help of associated degenerate Riccati equation we study the existence and uniqueness of an almost automorphic solutions.
We prove existence and uniqueness of the mild solution of an infinite dimensional, operator valued, backward stochastic Riccati equation. We exploit the regularizing properties of the semigroup generated by the unbounded operator involved in the equation. Then the results will be applied to characterize the value function and optimal feedback law for a infinite dimensional, linear quadratic control problem with stochastic coefficients.
We study the infinite horizon Linear-Quadratic problem and the associated algebraic Riccati equations for systems with unbounded control actions. The operator-theoretic context is motivated by composite systems of Partial Differential Equations (PDE) with boundary or point control. Specific focus is placed on systems of coupled hyperbolic/parabolic PDE with an overall `predominant' hyperbolic character, such as, e.g., some models for thermoelastic or fluid-structure interactions. While unbounded control actions lead to Riccati equations with unbounded (operator) coefficients, unlike the parabo…
We establish existence and uniqueness for infinite dimensional Riccati equations taking values in the Banach space L 1 ($μ$ $\otimes$ $μ$) for certain signed matrix measures $μ$ which are not necessarily finite. Such equations can be seen as the infinite dimensional analogue of matrix Riccati equations and they appear in the Linear-Quadratic control theory of stochastic Volterra equations.
This paper deals with a non-standard infinite dimensional linear-quadratic control problem arising in the physics of non-stationary states (see e.g. [6]): finding the minimum energy to drive a fixed stationary state x = 0 into an arbitrary non-stationary state x. The Riccati Equation (RE) associated to this problem is not standard since the sign of the linear part is opposite to the usual one, thus preventing the use of the known theory. Here we consider the finite horizon case. We prove that the linear selfadjoint operator P(t), associated to the value function, solves the above mentioned RE …
In this paper, we investigate the solvability of matrix valued Backward stochastic Riccati equations with jumps (BSREJ), which is associated with a stochastic linear quadratic (SLQ) optimal control problem with random coefficients and driven by both Brownian motion and Poisson jumps. By dynamic programming principle, Doob-Meyer decomposition and inverse flow technique, the existence and uniqueness of the solution for the BSREJ is established. The difficulties addressed to this issue not only are brought from the high nonlinearity of the generator of the BSREJ like the case driven only by Brown…
Unbounded stochastic control problems may lead to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations whose Hamiltonians are not always defined, especially when the diffusion term is unbounded with respect to the control. We obtain existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions growing at most like $o(1+|x|^p)$ at infinity for such HJB equations and more generally for degenerate parabolic equations with a superlinear convex gradient nonlinearity. If the corresponding control problem has a bounded diffusion with respect to the control, then our results apply to a larger class of solutions, namely those growing …
We generalize the classical theory on algebraic Riccati equations and optimization to infinite-dimensional well-posed linear systems, thus completing the work of George Weiss, Olof Staffans and others. We show that the optimal control is given by the stabilizing solution of an integral Riccati equation. If the input operator is not maximally unbounded, then this integral Riccati equation is equivalent to the algebraic Riccati equation. Using the integral Riccati equation, we show that for (nonsingular) minimization problems the optimal state-feedback loop is always well-posed. In particular, t…
A linear quadratic optimal stochastic control problem with random coefficients and indefinite state/control weight costs is usually linked to an indefinite stochastic Riccati equation (SRE) which is a matrix-valued quadratic backward stochastic differential equation along with an algebraic constraint involving the unknown. Either the optimal control problem or the SRE is solvable only if the given data satisfy a certain structure condition that has yet to be precisely defined. In this paper, by introducing a notion of subsolution for the SRE, we derive several novel sufficient conditions for t…
In this paper, a large class of time-varying Riccati equations arising in stochastic dynamic games is considered. The problem of the existence and uniqueness of some globally defined solution, namely the bounded and stabilizing solution, is investigated. As an application of the obtained existence results, we address in a second step the problem of infinite-horizon zero-sum two players linear quadratic (LQ) dynamic game for a stochastic discrete-time dynamical system subject to both random switching of its coefficients and multiplicative noise. We show that in the solution of such an optimal c…
This paper studies a class of partial information linear-quadratic mean-field game problems. A general stochastic large-population system is considered, where the diffusion term of the dynamic of each agent can depend on the state and control. We study both the control constrained case and unconstrained case. In control constrained case, by using Hamiltonian approach and convex analysis, the explicit decentralized strategies can be obtained through projection operator. The corresponding Hamiltonian type consistency condition system is derived, which turns out to be a nonlinear mean-field forwa…
In this paper, we prove the stabilizability of abstract Parabolic Integro-Differential Equations (PIDE) in a Hilbert space with decay rate $e^{-γt} $ for certain $γ> 0,$ by means of a finite dimensional controller in the feedback form. We determine a linear feedback law which is obtained by solving an algebraic Riccati equation. To prove the existence of the Riccati operator, we consider a linear quadratic optimal control problem with unbounded observation operator. The abstract theory of stabilization developed here is applied to specific problems related to viscoelastic fluids, e.g. Oldroyd …
This paper obtains the maximum principle for both stochastic (global) open-loop and stochastic (global) closed-loop Stackelberg differential games. For the closed-loop case, we use the theory of controlled forward-backward stochastic differential equations to derive the maximum principle for the leader's optimal strategy. In the special case of the open-loop linear quadratic Stackelberg game, we consider the follower's Hamiltonian system as the leader's state equation, derive the related stochastic Riccati equation, and show the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the Riccati equation …
This paper concerns portfolio selection with multiple assets under rough covariance matrix. We investigate the continuous-time Markowitz mean-variance problem for a multivariate class of affine and quadratic Volterra models. In this incomplete non-Markovian and non-semimartingale market framework with unbounded random coefficients, the optimal portfolio strategy is expressed by means of a Riccati backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE). In the case of affine Volterra models, we derive explicit solutions to this BSDE in terms of multi-dimensional Riccati-Volterra equations. This framew…
This paper deals with some reachability issues for piecewise linear switched systems with time-dependent coefficients and multiplicative noise. Namely, it aims at characterizing data that are almost reachable at some fixed time T > 0 (belong to the closure of the reachable set in a suitable L 2-sense). From a mathematical point of view, this provides the missing link between approximate controllability towards 0 and approximate controllability towards given targets. The methods rely on linear-quadratic control and Riccati equations. The main novelty is that we consider an LQ problem with contr…
This paper is devoted to obtaining a wellposedness result for multidimensional BSDEs with possibly unbounded random time horizon and driven by a general martingale in a filtration only assumed to satisfy the usual hypotheses, i.e. the filtration may be stochastically discontinuous. We show that for stochastic Lipschitz generators and unbounded, possibly infinite, time horizon, these equations admit a unique solution in appropriately weighted spaces. Our result allows in particular to obtain a wellposedness result for BSDEs driven by discrete--time approximations of general martingales.
Multidimensional indefinite stochastic Riccati equations and zero-sum stochastic linear-quadratic differential games with non-Markovian regime switching
This paper is devoted to a high-dimensional mixed leadership stochastic differential game on a finite horizon in feedback information mode, where the control variables enter into the diffusion term of state equation. A verification theorem for the feedback Stackelberg-Nash equilibrium is obtained by using a system of coupled and fully nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations. We apply the verification theorem to deal with a dynamic innovation and pricing decision problem where the buyer acts as the leader in the pricing decisions and the dynamic model is stochastic. Via the solutions…
The ergodic properties of the randomly forced Navier-Stokes system have been extensively studied in the literature during the last two decades. The problem has always been considered in bounded domains, in order to have, for example, suitable spectral properties for the Stokes operator, to ensure some compactness properties for the resolving operator of the system and the associated functional spaces, etc. In the present paper, we consider the Navier-Stokes system in an unbounded domain satisfying the Poincaré inequality. Assuming that the system is perturbed by a bounded non-degenerate noise,…
It is a longstanding unsolved problem to characterize the optimal feedback controls for general linear quadratic optimal control problem of stochastic evolution equation with random coefficients. A solution to this problem is given in [21] under some assumptions which can be verified for interesting concrete models, such as controlled stochastic wave equations, controlled stochastic Schrödinger equations, etc. More precisely, the authors establish the equivalence between the existence of optimal feedback operator and the solvability of the corresponding operator-valued, backward stochastic Ric…
In this paper, we consider a linear-quadratic optimal control problem of mean-field stochastic differential equation with jump diffusion, which is also called as an MF-LQJ problem. Here, cost functional is allowed to be indefinite. We use an equivalent cost functional method to deal with the MF-LQJ problem with indefinite weighting matrices. Some equivalent cost functionals enable us to establish a bridge between indefinite and positive-definite MF-LQJ problems. With such a bridge, solvabilities of stochastic Hamiltonian system and Riccati equations are further characterized. Optimal control o…
