By using the gluing formulae of the Seiberg-Witten invariant, we show the nonexistence of Einstein metric on manifolds obtained from a 4-manifold with nontrivial Seiberg-Witten invariant by performing sufficiently many connected sums or appropriate surgeries along circles or homologically trivial 2-spheres with closed oriented 4-manifolds with negative definite intersection form.
Let $M$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $N$ be a subvariety with codimension greater than or equal to 2. We show that there are no complete Kähler--Einstein metrics on $M-N$. As an application, let $E$ be an exceptional divisor of $M$. Then $M-E$ cannot admit any complete Kähler--Einstein metric if blow-down of $E$ is a complex variety with only canonical or terminal singularities. A similar result is shown for pairs.
We prove that a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume does not admit a properly embedded noncompact surface of finite topology with constant mean curvature greater than or equal to 1.
In this note we prove a nonexistence result for proper biharmonic maps from complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension \(m=\dim M\geq 3\) with infinite volume that admit an Euclidean type Sobolev inequality into general Riemannian manifolds by assuming finiteness of $\|τ(ϕ)\|_{L^p(M)}, p>1$ and smallness of $\|dϕ\|_{L^m(M)}$. This is an improvement of a recent result of the first named author, where he assumed $2<p<m$. As applications we also get several nonexistence results for proper biharmonic submersions from complete non-compact manifolds into general Riemannian manifolds.
We study complete Riemannian manifolds satisfying the equation $Ric+\nabla^2 f-\frac{1}{m}df\otimes df=0$ by studying the associated PDE $Δ_f f + mμe^{2f/m}=0$ for $μ\leq 0$. By developing a gradient estimate for $f$, we show there are no nonconstant solutions. We then apply this to show that there are no nontrivial Ricci flat warped products with fibers which have nonpositive Einstein constant. We also show that for nontrivial steady gradient Ricci solitons, the quantity $R+|\nabla f|^2$ is a positive constant.
This paper has two goals; the first is to generalize results for the existence and nonexistence of warped product submanifolds of almost contact manifolds, accordingly a self-contained reference of such submanifolds is offered to save efforts of potential research. Most of the results of this paper are general and decisive enough to generalize both discovered and not discovered results. Moreover, a discrete example of contact CR-warped product submanifold in Kenmotsu manifold is constructed. For further research direction, we addressed a couple of open problems arose from the results of this p…
We prove the Lefchetz theorem for CR submanifolds in Hermitian symmetric spaces. As an application we prove the nonexistence of real analytic Levi flat submanifolds in such manifolds.
In this article, we give nonexistence and nonuniqueness results for the vacuum Einstein conformal constraint equations in the far-from-CMC case and also show that in some cases the equations of the conformal method for positive Yamabe metrics and with TT-tensor $σ$ = 0 have a non-trivial solution, and thus answer a question by D. Maxwell.
In this paper we are concerned with a class of elliptic differential inequalities with a potential both on $\erre^m$ and on Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we investigate the effect of the geometry of the underlying manifold and of the behavior of the potential at infinity on nonexistence of nonnegative solutions.
In this paper, we study the existence of harmonic and bi-harmonic maps into Riemannian manifolds admitting a conformal vector field, or a nontrivial Ricci solitons.
This paper is to study the conformal scalar curvature equation on complete noncompact Riemannian manifold of nonpositive curvature. We derive some estimates and properties of supersolutions of the scalar curvature equation, and obtain some nonexistence results for complete solutions of scalar curvature equation.
The goal of this article is to investigate complete noncompact warped product gradient Ricci solitons. Nonexistence results, estimates for the warping function and for its gradient are proven. When the soliton is steady or expanding these nonexistence results generalize to a broader context certain pde estimates and rigidity obtained when studying warped product Einstein manifolds. When the soliton is shrinking, it is presented a nonexistence theorem with no counterpart in the Einstein case, which is proved using properties of the first eigenvalue of a weighted Laplacian.
In this short note we study nonexistence result of biharmonic maps from a complete Riemannian manifold into a Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature. Assume that $ϕ:(M,g)\to (N, h)$ is a biharmonic map, where $(M, g)$ is a complete Riemannian manifold and $(N,h)$ a Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature, we will prove that $ϕ$ is a harmonic map if one of the following conditions holds: (i) $|dϕ|$ is bounded in $L^q(M)$ and $ \int_M|τ(ϕ)|^pdv_g<\infty, $ for some $1\leq q\leq\infty$, $1< p<\infty$; or (ii) $Vol(M)=\infty$ and $ \int_M|τ(ϕ)|^pdv_g<\infty, $ fo…
We prove that there is no faithful finite-dimensional representation by skew-hermitian matrices of a ``basic algebra of observables'' B on a noncompact symplectic manifold M. Consequently there exists no finite-dimensional quantization of any Lie subalgebra of the Poisson algebra C^\infty(M) containing B.
In this paper we study the warped product submanifolds of a Lorentzian paracosymplectic manifold and obtain some nonexistence results. We show that a warped product semi-invariant submanifold in the form {$M=M_{T}\times_{f}M_{\bot}$} of Lorentzian paracosymplectic manifold such that the characteristic vector field is normal to $M$ is an usual Riemannian product manifold where totally geodesic and totally umbilical submanifolds of warped product are invariant and anti-invariant, respectively. We prove that the distributions involved in the definition of a warped product semi-invariant submanifo…
In this note we show that a closed Riemannian manifold does not admit a fill-in with nonnegative scalar curvature if the mean curvature is point-wise large. Similar result also holds for fill-ins with a negative scalar curvature lower bound.
It is well known that the Euclidean Sobolev inequality holds on any Cartan-Hadamard manifold of dimension $ n\ge 3 $, i.e. any complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature. As a byproduct of the Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, a longstanding problem in the mathematical literature settled only very recently in a breakthrough paper by Ghomi and Spruck, we can now assert that the optimal constant is also Euclidean, namely it coincides with the one achieved in the Euclidean space $ \mathbb{R}^n $ by the Aubin-Talenti functions. One may ask whether there exist at …
In this note, we show that a closed spin Riemannian manifold does not admit a spin fill-in satisfying the dominant energy condition (DEC) if a certain generalized mean curvature function is point-wise large.
In this paper we consider an Einstein-type equation which generalizes important geometric equations, like static and critical point equations. We prove that a complete Einstein-type manifold with fourth-order divergence-free Weyl tensor and zero radial Weyl curvature is locally a warped product with $(n-1)$-dimensional Einstein fibers, provided that the potential function is proper. As a consequence, we prove a result about the nonexistence of multiple black holes in static spacetimes.
We generalize the famous result of Gromov and Lawson on the nonexistence of metric of positive scalar curvature on enlargeable manifolds to the case of foliations, without using index theorems on noncompact manifolds.
We prove the nonexistence of stable immersed minimal surfaces uniformly conformally equivalent to the complex plane in any complete orientable four-dimensional Riemannian manifold with uniformly positive isotropic curvature. We also generalize the same nonexistence result to higher dimensions provided that the ambient manifold has uniformly positive complex sectional curvature. The proof consists of two parts, assuming an "eigenvalue condition" on the Cauchy-Riemann operator of a holomorphic bundle, we prove (1) a vanishing theorem for these holomorphic bundles on the complex plane; (2) an exi…
As a generalization of Einstein manifolds, the nearly quasi-Einstein manifolds and pseudo quasi-Einstein manifolds are both interesting and useful in studying the general relativity. In this paper, we study the extended quasi-Einstein manifolds which derive from pseudo quasi-Einstein manifolds. After showing the existence theorem of extended quasi-Einstein manifold, we give some special geometric properties of such manifolds. At the same time, we also discuss the extended quasi-Einstein manifolds with certain soliton like generalised Ricci soliton or Riemann soliton. Furthermore, we construct …
We establish variational formulas for Ricci upper and lower bounds, as well as a derivative formula for the Ricci curvature. As applications, constant curvature manifolds, Einstein manifolds and Ricci parallel manifolds are identified, respectively, with different integral-differential formulas and semigroup inequalities. Moreover, by using derivative and Hessian formulas for the heat semigroup $P_t$ developed from stochastic analysis, explicit Hessian estimates are derived on Einstein and Ricci parallel manifolds.
A weakly Einstein manifold is a generalization of a 4-dimensional Einstein manifold, which is defined as an application of a curvature identity derived from the generalized Gauss-Bonnet formula for a 4-dimensional compact oriented Riemannian manifold. In this paper, we shall give a characterization of a weakly Einstein manifold.
Inspired by the study of $V$-static manifold about classification, in this article, we apply the recent results obtained by Freitas and Gomes (Compact gradient Einstein-type manifolds with boundary, 2022) to prove the rigidity results for compact gradient Einstein-type manifolds with nonempty boundary and constant scalar curvature under some suitable pinching conditions. As a special case of gradient Einstein-type manifold, we also give a rigidity result of $(m,ρ)$-quasi-Einstein manifold with boundary.
In this article, we study Einstein-Weyl structures on almost cosymplectic manifolds. First we prove that an almost cosymplectic $(κ,μ)$-manifold is Einstein or cosymplectic if it admits a closed Einstein-Weyl structure or two Einstein-Weyl structures. Next for a three dimensional compact almost $α$-cosymplectic manifold admitting closed Einstein-Weyl structures, we prove that it is Ricc-flat. Further, we show that an almost $α$-cosymplectic admitting two Einstein-Weyl structures is either Einstein or $α$-cosymplectic, provided that its Ricci tensor is commuting. Finally, we prove that a compac…
An $η$-Einstein condition is introduced in the context of indefinite g.f.f-manifolds, and a few Schur-type lemmas for indefinite S-manifolds are provided.
It is an important problem in differential geometry to find non-naturally reductive homogeneous Einstein metrics on homogeneous manifolds. In this paper, we consider this problem for some coset spaces of compact simple Lie groups. A new method to construct invariant non-naturally reductive Einstein metrics on normal homogeneous Einstein manifolds is presented. In particular, we show that on the standard homogeneous Einstein manifolds, except for some special cases, there exist plenty of such metrics. A further interesting result of this paper is that on some compact semisimple Lie groups, ther…
In this paper, we study the structure of the limit space of a sequence of almost Einstein manifolds, which are generalizations of Einstein manifolds. Roughly speaking, such manifolds are the initial manifolds of some normalized Ricci flows whose scalar curvatures are almost constants over space-time in the $L^1$-sense, Ricci curvatures are bounded from below at the initial time. Under the non-collapsed condition, we show that the limit space of a sequence of almost Einstein manifolds has most properties which is known for the limit space of Einstein manifolds. As applications, we can apply our…
We show that a connection with skew-symmetric torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition exists on an almost contact metric manifold exactly when it is D-homothetic to a cosymplectic manifold. In dimension five, we get that the existence of a connection with skew torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition is equivalent to the existence of a Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold and vice versa, any Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold generates a two parametric family of connections with skew torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition. Formulas for the curvature and the Ricci tensors of t…
The object of the present paper is to study some properties of para-K$ä$hler manifold whose metric is conformal Einstein soliton. We have studied some certain curvature properties of para-K$ä$hler manifold admitting conformal Einstein soliton.
The goal of this article is to study compact quasi-Einstein manifolds with boundary. We provide boundary estimates for compact quasi-Einstein manifolds simi\-lar to previous results obtained for static and $V$-static spaces. In addition, we show that compact quasi-Einstein manifolds with connected boundary and satisfying a suitable pinching condition must be isometric, up to scaling, to the standard hemisphere $\mathbb{S}_{+}^{n}.$
In this paper, we show that, for every Hermitian vector bundle over a compact Kaehler Einstein manifold, if the projection is biharmonic, then it is harmonic.
Throughout the history of Einstein manifolds, differential geometers have shown great interest in finding the relationships between curvature and the topology of Einstein manifolds. In the paper, first, we prove that a compact Einstein manifold $(M,g)$ with Einstein constant $α>0$ is a homo-logical sphere when the minimum of its sectional curvatures $> α/(n+ 2)$; in particular, $(M,g)$ is a spherical space form when the minimum of its sectional curvatures $> α/ n$. Second, we prove two propositions (similar to the above ones) for Tachibana numbers of a compact Einstein manifold $(M,g)$ with $α…
We show that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator of the Laplacian on an open subset of the boundary of a connected compact Einstein manifold with boundary determines the manifold up to isometries. Similarly, for connected conformally compact Einstein manifolds of even dimension $n+1$, we prove that the scattering matrix at energy $n$ on an open subset of its boundary determines the manifold up to isometries.
In this paper, we define the spectral Einstein functional associated with the Dirac operator for manifolds with boundary. And we give the proof of Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for the spectral Einstein functional associated with the Dirac operator on 4-dimensional manifolds with boundary.
We extend a result of Patodi for closed Riemannian manifolds to the context of closed contact manifolds by showing the condition that a manifold is an $η$-Einstein Sasakian manifold is spectrally determined. We also prove that the condition that a Sasakian space form has constant $ϕ$-sectional curvature $c$ is spectrally determined.
The main result is that the qc-scalar curvature of a seven dimensional quaternionic contact Einstein manifold is a constant. In addition, we characterize qc-Einstein structures with certain flat vertical connection and develop their local structure equations. Finally, regular qc-Ricci flat structures are shown to fibre over hyper-Kahler manifolds.
An Einstein manifold is called scalar curvature rigid if there are no compactly supported volume-preserving deformation of the metric which increase the scalar curvature. We give various characterizations of scalar curvature rigidity for open Einstein manifolds as well as for closed Einstein manifolds. As an application, we construct mass-decreasing perturbations of the Riemannian Schwarzschild metric and the Taub-Bolt metric.
In this paper we prove a number of triviality results for Einstein warped products and quasi-Einstein manifolds using different techniques and under assumptions of various nature. In particular we obtain and exploit gradient estimates for solutions of weighted Poisson-type equations and adaptations to the weighted setting of some Liouville-type theorems.
We find the necessary conditions for a sequential warped product manifold to be a quasi-Einstein manifold. We also investigate the necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequential standard static space-time and a sequential generalized Robertson-Walker space-time to be a manifold of quasi-constant curvature.
In this paper, we investigate the geometry of Einstein-type equation on a Riemannian manifold, unifying various particular geometric structures recently studied in the literature, such as critical point equation and vacuum static equation. We show various rigidity results of Einstein-type manifolds under assumptions of several curvature conditions.
The main objective of this paper is to investigate the $m$-quasi Einstein manifold when the potential function becomes convex. In this article, it is proved that an $m$-quasi Einstein manifold satisfying some integral conditions with vanishing Ricci curvature along the direction of potential vector field has constant scalar curvature and hence the manifold turns out to be an Einstein manifold. It is also shown that in an $m$-quasi Einstein manifold the potential function agrees with Hodge-de Rham potential up to a constant. Finally, it is proved that if a complete non-compact and non-expanding…
We present a non existence result of complete, Einstein hypersurfaces tangent to the Reeb vector field of a regular Sasakian manifold which fibers onto a complex Stein manifold.
In this paper we introduce the notion of generalized quasi--Einstein manifold, that generalizes the concepts of Ricci soliton, Ricci almost soliton and quasi--Einstein manifolds. We prove that a complete generalized quasi--Einstein manifold with harmonic Weyl tensor and with zero radial Weyl curvature, is locally a warped product with $(n-1)$--dimensional Einstein fibers. In particular, this implies a local characterization for locally conformally flat gradient Ricci almost solitons, similar to that proved for gradient Ricci solitons.
