We extend the classical notion of a Reedy category so as to allow non-trivial automorphisms. Our extension includes many important examples occuring in topology such as Segal's category Gamma, or the total category of a crossed simplicial group such as Connes' cyclic category Lambda. For any generalized Reedy category R and any cofibrantly generated model category E, the functor category E^R is shown to carry a canonical model structure of Reedy type.
We define the notion of an enriched Reedy category, and show that if A is a C-Reedy category for some symmetric monoidal model category C and M is a C-model category, the category of C-functors and C-natural transformations from A to M is again a model category.
We use the notion of multi-Reedy category to prove that, if $\mathcal C$ is a Reedy category, then $Θ\mathcal C$ is also a Reedy category. This result gives a new proof that the categories $Θ_n$ are Reedy categories. We then define elegant Reedy categories, for which we prove that the Reedy and injective model structures coincide.
We study a certain type of action of categories on categories and on operads. Using the structure of the categories Δ and Ω governing category and operad structures, respectively, we define categories which instead encode the structure of a category acting on a category, or a category acting on an operad. We prove that the former has the structure of an elegant Reedy category, whereas the latter has the structure of a generalized Reedy category. In particular, this approach gives a new way to regard group actions on categories and on operads.
We observe that the Reedy model structure on a diagram category can be constructed by iterating an operation of "bigluing" model structures along a pair of functors and a natural transformation. This yields a new explanation of the definition of Reedy categories: they are almost exactly those small categories for which the category of diagrams and its model structure can be constructed by iterated bigluing. It also gives a consistent way to produce generalizations of Reedy categories, including the generalized Reedy categories of Cisinski and Berger-Moerdijk and the enriched Reedy categories o…
If $D$ is a Reedy category and $M$ is a model category, the category $M^{D}$ of $D$-diagrams in $M$ is a model category under the Reedy model category structure. If $C \to D$ is a Reedy functor between Reedy categories, then there is an induced functor of diagram categories $M^{D} \to M^{C}$. Our main result is a characterization of the Reedy functors $C \to D$ that induce right or left Quillen functors $M^{D} \to M^{C}$ for every model category $M$. We apply these results to various situations, and in particular show that certain important subdiagrams of a fibrant multicosimplicial object are…
We study the category of Reedy diagrams in a $\mm$-model category. Explicitly, we show that if K is a small category, V is a closed symmetric monoidal category and C is a closed V-module, then the diagram category V^K is a closed symmetric monoidal category and the diagram category C^K is a closed V^K-module. We then prove that if further K is a Reedy category, V is a monoidal model category and C is a V-model category, then with the Reedy model category structures, V^K is a monoidal model category and C^K$ is a $\mm^K-model category provided that either the unit 1 of V is cofibrant or V is co…
Given a family of model categories $\cal E \to \cal R$ over a Reedy category, we outline a set of conditions which lead to the existence of a Reedy model structure on the category of sections ${\sf Sect}(\cal R, \cal E)$. We prove that for a wide class of examples, this model structure serves as a strictification of the $(\infty,1)$-category of sections of the higher-categorical family associated to $\cal E \to \cal R$.
Given a small category $I$ and a closed symmetric monoidal category $\mm$, we show that the diagram category $\mm^I$ with the objectwise product is a closed symmetric monoidal category. We then prove that if $I$ is a Reedy category and $\mm$ has a model structure compatible with its product, then so is the Reedy model structure on $\mm^I$ provided that $\mm$ is cofibrantly generated.
We construct and study projective and Reedy model category structures for bimodules and infinitesimal bimodules over topological operads. Both model structures produce the same homotopy categories. For the model categories in question, we build explicit cofibrant and fibrant replacements. We show that these categories are right proper and under some conditions left proper. We also study the extension/restriction adjunctions.
Variations on the notions of Reedy model structures and projective model structures on categories of diagrams in a model category are introduced. These allow one to choose only a subset of the entries when defining weak equivalences, or to use different model categories at different entries of the diagrams. As a result, a bisimplicial model category that can be used to recover the algebraic K-theory for any Waldhausen subcategory of a model category is produced.
The goal of this paper is to demystify the role played by the Reedy category axioms in homotopy theory. With no assumed prerequisites beyond a healthy appetite for category theoretic arguments, we present streamlined proofs of a number of useful technical results, which are well known to folklore but difficult to find in the literature. While the results presented here are not new, our approach to their proofs is somewhat novel. Specifically, we reduce the much of the hard work involved to simpler computations involving weighted colimits and Leibniz (pushout-product) constructions. The general…
We study the categories governing infinity (wheeled) properads. The graphical category, which was already known to be generalized Reedy, is in fact an Eilenberg-Zilber category. A minor alteration to the definition of the wheeled graphical category allows us to show that it is a generalized Reedy category. Finally, we present model structures for Segal properads and Segal wheeled properads.
We use fibrations of complete Segal spaces to construct four complete Segal spaces: Reedy fibrant simplicial spaces, Segal spaces, complete Segal spaces, and spaces. Moreover, we show each one comes with a universal fibration that classifies Reedy left fibrations, Segal coCartesian fibrations, coCartesian fibrations and left fibrations and prove these are representable fibrations. Finally, we use equivalences between quasi-categories and complete Segal spaces to present analogous constructions using fibrations of quasi-categories.
In this note we consider partial model categories, by which we mean relative categories that satisfy a weakened version of the model category axioms involving only the weak equivalences. More precisely, a partial model category will be a relative category that has the two out of six property and admits a 3-arrow calculus. We then show that Charles Rezk's result that the simplicial space obtained from a simplicial model category by taking a Reedy fibrant replacement of its simplicial nerve is a complete Segal space also holds for these partial model categories. We also note that conversely ever…
Topologists are sometimes interested in space-valued diagrams over a given index category, but it is tricky to say what such a diagram even is if we look for a notion that is stable under equivalence. The same happens in (homotopy) type theory, where it is known only for special cases how one can define a type of type-valued diagrams over a given index category. We offer several constructions. We first show how to define homotopy coherent diagrams which come with all higher coherence laws explicitly, with two variants that come with assumption on the index category or on the type theory. Furth…
We extend the functor Sing of singular chains to the category of topological stacks and establish its main properties. We prove that Sing respects weak equivalences and takes a morphism of topological stacks that is both a Serre and a Reedy fibration to a Kan fibration of simplicial sets. When restricted to the category of topological spaces Sing coincides with the usual singular functor.
In this article, we develop a notion of Quillen bifibration which combines the two notions of Grothendieck bifibration and of Quillen model structure. In particular, given a bifibration $p:\mathcal E\to\mathcal B$, we describe when a family of model structures on the fibers $\mathcal E_A$ and on the basis category $\mathcal B$ combines into a model structure on the total category $\mathcal E$, such that the functor $p$ preserves cofibrations, fibrations and weak equivalences. Using this Grothendieck construction for model structures, we revisit the traditional definition of Reedy model structu…
We introduce the notion of inductive category in a model category and prove that it agrees with the Ganea approach given by Doeraene. This notion also coincides with the topological one when we consider the category of (well-) pointed topological spaces.
We propose a new homotopy invariant for Lie groupoids which generalizes the classical Lusternik-Schnirelmann category for topological spaces. We use a bicategorical approach to develop a notion of contraction in this context. We propose a notion of homotopy between generalized maps given by the 2-arrows in a certain bicategory of fractions. This notion is invariant under Morita equivalence. Thus, when the groupoid defines an orbifold, we have a well defined LS-category for orbifolds. We prove an orbifold version of the classical Lusternik-Schnirelmann theorem for critical points.
We propose a notion of weak (n+k,n)-category, which we call (n+k,n)-Theta-spaces. The (n+k,n)-Theta-spaces are precisely the fibrant objects of a certain model category structure on the category of presheaves of simplicial sets on Joyal's category Theta_n. This notion is a generalization of that of complete Segal spaces (which are precisely the (infty,1)-Theta-spaces). Our main result is that the above model category is cartesian.
Category theory has been recently used as a tool for constructing and modeling an information flow framework. Here, we show that the flow of information can be described using preradicals. We prove that preradicals generalize the notion of persistence in spaces where the underlying structure forms a directed acyclic graph. We show that a particular $α$ preradical describes the persistence of a commutative $G$-module associated with a directed acyclic graph. Furthermore, given how preradicals are defined, they are able to preserve the modeled system's underlying structure. This allows us to gen…
We define the notion of an additive model category, and we prove that any additive, stable, combinatorial model category has a natural enrichment over symmetric spectra based on simplicial abelian groups. As a consequence, every object in such a model category has a naturally associated endomorphism ring inside this spectra category. We establish the basic properties of this enrichment. We also develop some enriched model category theory. In particular, we have a notion of an adjoint pair of functors being a 'module' over another such pair. Such things are called "adjoint modules". We develop …
An operad (this paper deals with non-symmetric operads)may be conceived as a partial algebra with a family of insertion operations, Gerstenhaber's circle-i products, which satisfy two kinds of associativity, one of them involving commutativity. A Cat-operad is an operad enriched over the category Cat of small categories, as a 2-category with small hom-categories is a category enriched over Cat. The notion of weak Cat-operad is to the notion of Cat-operad what the notion of bicategory is to the notion of 2-category. The equations of operads like associativity of insertions are replaced by isomo…
We develop a notion of iterated monoidal category and show that this notion corresponds in a precise way to the notion of iterated loop space. Specifically the group completion of the nerve of such a category is an iterated loop space and free iterated monoidal categories give rise to finite simplicial operads of the same homotopy type as the classical little cubes operads used to parametrize the higher H-space structure of iterated loop spaces. Iterated monoidal categories encompass, as a special case, the notion of braided tensor categories, as used in the theory of quantum groups.
We introduce and study a notion of cylinder coherator similar to the notion of Grothendieck coherator which define more flexible notion of weak infinity groupoids. We show that each such cylinder coherator produces a combinatorial semi-model category of weak infinity groupoids, whose objects are all fibrant and which is in a precise sense "freely generated by an object". We show that all those semi model categories are Quillen equivalent together and Quillen to the model category of spaces. A general procedure is given to produce such coherator, and several explicit examples are presented: one…
This work was intended as an attempt to investigate a model of irreversible process and natural phenomena. For this, we introduce the notion of irreversible path (that for brevity we write ir-path), ir-homotopy, ir-contractible space, and Lusternik-Schnirelmann ir-category by equipping the $I=[0,1]$ with left order topology. We will restrict the irreversibility of definitions to $T_0$ Spaces, such that for $T_1$ spaces, the ir-paths are constant. After providing some theorems and properties of these notions, eventually, we prove that Lusternik-Schnirelmann ir-category is an invariant of ir-hom…
This paper is the first in a series of two papers, $\mathbf{Z}$-Categories I and $\mathbf{Z}$-Categories II, which develop the notion of $\mathbf{Z}$-category, the natural bi-infinite analog to strict $ω$-categories, and show that the $\left(\infty,1\right)$-category of spectra relates to the $\left(\infty,1\right)$-category of homotopy coherent $\mathbf{Z}$-categories as the pointed groupoids. In this work we provide a $2$-categorical treatment of the combinatorial spectra of \cite{Kan} and argue that this description is a simplicial avatar of the abiding notion of homotopy coherent $\mathbf{…
Based on a Whitehead-type characterization of the sectional category we develop the notion of weak sectional category. This is a new lower bound of the sectional category, which is inspired by the notion of weak category in the sense of Berstein-Hilton. We establish several properties and inequalities, including the fact that the weak sectional category is a better lower bound for the sectional category than the classical one given by the nilpotency of the kernel of the induced map in cohomology. Finally, we apply our results in the study of the topological complexity in the sense of Farber.
In this paper we establish a natural definition of Lusternik-Schnirelmann category for simplicial complexes via the well known notion of contiguity. This category has the property of being homotopy invariant under strong equivalences, and only depends on the simplicial structure rather than its geometric realization. In a similar way to the classical case, we also develop a notion of geometric category for simplicial complexes. We prove that the maximum value over the homotopy class of a given complex is attained in the core of the complex. Finally, by means of well known relations between sim…
We introduce the notion of Lusternik-Schnirelmann category for differentiable stacks and establish its relation with the groupoid Lusternik-Schnirelmann category for Lie groupoids.
We study the notion of a bifibration in simplicial sets which generalizes the classical notion of two-sided discrete fibration studied in category theory. If $A$ and $B$ are simplicial sets we equip the category of simplicial sets over $A\times B$ with the structure of a model category for which the fibrant objects are the bifibrations from $A$ to $B$. We also equip the category of correspondences of simplicial sets from $A$ to $B$ with the structure of a model category. We describe several Quillen equivalences relating these model structure with the covariant model structure on the category o…
In this paper we study a new notion of category weight of homology classes developing further the ideas of E. Fadell and S. Husseini. In the case of closed smooth manifolds the homological category weight is equivalent to the cohomological category weight of E. Fadell and S. Husseini but these two notions are distinct already for Poincaré complexes. An important advantage of the homological category weight is its homotopy invariance. We use the notion of homological category weight to study various generalizations of the Lusternik - Schnirelmann category which appeared in the theory of closed …
Algebraic topological methods have been used successfully in concurrency theory, the domain of theoretical computer science that deals with distributed computing. L. Fajstrup, E. Goubault, and M. Raussen have introduced partially ordered spaces (pospaces) as a model for concurrent systems. In this paper it is shown that the category of pospaces under a fixed pospace is both a fibration and a cofibration category in the sense of H. Baues. The homotopy notion in this fibration and cofibration category is relative directed homotopy. It is also shown that the category of pospaces is a closed model…

We define a notion of "Frobenius pair", which is a mild generalization of the notion of Frobenius object in a monoidal category. We then show that Atiyah duality for smooth manifolds can be encapsulated in the statement that a certain collection of structure obtained from a manifold forms a commutative Frobenius pair in the stable homotopy category of spectra.
The goal of the present paper is to compare, in a precise way, two notions of operads up to homotopy which appear in the literature. Namely, we construct a functor from the category of strict unital homotopy colored operads to the category of infinity-operads. The former notion, that we make precise, is the operadic generalization of the notion of A-infinity-categories and the latter notion was defined by Moerdijk--Weiss in order to generalize the simplicial notion of infinity-category of Joyal--Lurie. This functor extends in two directions the simplicial nerve of Faonte--Lurie for A-infinity-…
In this paper, we generalize the notion of Serre fibration to the Morita category of topological groupoids and derive the associated long exact sequence of homotopy groups. We use this results for calculation of homotopy groups of various groupoids, such as the foliation groupoid of a Riemannian foliation.
We investigate a notion of $\times$-homotopy of graph maps that is based on the internal hom associated to the categorical product in the category of graphs. It is shown that graph $\times$-homotopy is characterized by the topological properties of the $\Hom$ complex, a functorial way to assign a poset (and hence topological space) to a pair of graphs; $\Hom$ complexes were introduced by Lovász and further studied by Babson and Kozlov to give topological bounds on chromatic number. Along the way, we also establish some structural properties of $\Hom$ complexes involving products and exponentia…
This is the second part of a series of papers devoted to develop Homotopical Algebraic Geometry. We start by defining and studying generalizations of standard notions of linear and commutative algebra in an abstract monoidal model category, such as derivations, etale and smooth maps, flat and projective modules, etc. We then use the theory of stacks over model categories introduced in \cite{hagI} in order to define a general notion of geometric stack over a base symmetric monoidal model category C, and prove that this notion satisfies the expected properties. The rest of the paper consists in …
