We review the notions of a multiplier category and the $W^{*}$-envelope of a $C^{*}$-category. We then consider the notion of an orthogonal sum of a (possibly infinite) family of objects in a $C^{*}$-category. Furthermore, we construct reduced crossed products of $C^{*}$-categories with groups. We axiomatize the basic properties of the $K$-theory for $C^{*}$-categories in the notion of a homological functor. We then study various rigidity properties of homological functors in general, and special additional features of the $K$-theory of $C^{*}$-categories. As an application we construct and study interesting functors on the orbit category of a group from $C^{*}$-categorical data.
Grandis's non-abelian homological algebra generalizes standard homological algebra in abelian categories to \textit{homological categories}, which are a broader class of categories including for example the category of lattices and Galois connections. Here, we prove that if $\mathsf{C}$ is any category with an ideal of null morphisms with respect to which (co)kernels exist, then the arrow category of $\mathsf{C}$ is a homological category. This broadens the applicability of Grandis's framework substantially. In particular, one can form the homology of chain complexes in $\mathsf{C}$ by taking …
We consider filtrations of objects in an abelian category $\catA$ induced by a tilting object $T$ of homological dimension at most two. We define three disjoint subcategories with no maps between them in one direction, such that each object has a unique filtation with factors in these categories. This filtration coincides with the the classical two-step filtration induced by torsion pairs in dimension one. We also give a refined filtration, using the derived equivalence between the derived categories of $\catA$ and the module category of $End_\catA (T)^{op}$. The factors of this filtration con…
Derived categories were invented by Grothendieck and Verdier around 1960, not very long after the "old" homological algebra (of derived functors between abelian categories) was established. This "new" homological algebra, of derived categories and derived functors between them, provides a significantly richer and more flexible machinery than the "old" homological algebra. For instance, the important concepts of dualizing complex and tilting complex do not exist in the "old" homological algebra. This paper is an edited version of the notes for a two-lecture minicourse given at MSRI in January 2…
Let $k$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $\underline{\mathscr{C}}$ be a locally finite $k$-linear category equipped with a self-embedding functor of degree 1. We show under a moderate condition that finitely generated torsion representations of $\underline{\mathscr{C}}$ are super finitely presented (that is, they have projective resolutions each term of which is finitely generated). In the situation that these self-embedding functors are genetic functors, we give upper bounds for homological degrees of finitely generated torsion modules. These results apply to quite a few categories recent…
We study the category of $\mathbb{Z}$-indexed sequences over an abelian category and certain generalized homology functors for this category of sequences which are indexed by positive integers $a$ and $b$. By looking at the corresponding derived category, we show that there is an "optimal" subcategory of sequences for every choice of our generalized homology functors, namely, the category of $N$-complexes (sequences for which the differential $d$ satisfies $d^N = 0$) where $N = a + b$. In this optimal case we show that our homology functors reduce to Kapranov's homology functors $\operatorname…
We consider a notion of exact sequences in any -not necessarily exact- pointed category relative to a given (E;M)-factorization structure. We apply this notion to introduce and investigate a new notion of exact sequences of semimodules over semirings relative to the canonical image factorization. Several homological results are proved using the new notion of exactness including some restricted versions of the Short Five Lemma and the Snake Lemma opening the door for introducing and investigating homology objects in such categories. Our results apply in particular to the variety of commutative …
In this paper we show that Gorensteinness, singularity categories and the finite generation condition Fg for the Hochschild cohomology are invariants under the arrow removal operation for a finite dimensional algebra.
An important example of a model category is the category of unbounded chain complexes of R-modules, which has as its homotopy category the derived category of the ring R. This example shows that traditional homological algebra is encompassed by Quillen's homotopical algebra. The goal of this paper is to show that more general forms of homological algebra also fit into Quillen's framework. Specifically, a projective class on a complete and cocomplete abelian category A is exactly the information needed to do homological algebra in A. The main result is that, under weak hypotheses, the category …
We use (non-)additive sheaves to introduce an (absolute) notion of Hochschild cohomology for exact categories as Ext's in a suitable bisheaf category. We compare our approach to various definitions present in the literature.
We prove that thick category $\mathcal{O}$ associated to a semi-simple complex finite dimensional Lie algebra is extension full in the category of all modules. We also prove the weak Alexandru conjecture both for regular blocks of thick category $\mathcal{O}$ and the associated categories of Harish-Chandra bimodules, but disprove it for singular blocks.
We introduce relative preresolving subcategories and precoresolving subcategories of an abelian category and define homological dimensions and codimensions relative to these subcategories respectively. We study the properties of these homological dimensions and codimensions and unify some important properties possessed by some known homological dimensions. Then we apply the obtained properties to special subcategories and in particular to module categories. Finally we propose some open questions and conjectures, which are closely related to the generalized Nakayama conjecture and the strong Na…
We give an elementary introduction to the theory of triangulated categories covering their axioms, homological algebra in triangulated categories, triangulated subcategories, and Verdier localization. We try to use a minimal set of axioms for triangulated categories and derive all other statements from these, including the existence of biproducts. We conclude with a list of examples.
For a Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$, we exhibit the equivalence of the bounded derived categories of certain resolving subcategories, which, amongst other results, yields an equivalence of the bounded derived category of finite length and finite projective dimension modules with the bounded derived category of projective modules with finite length homologies. This yields isomorphisms of various generalized cohomology groups (like K-theory) and improves on terms of a spectral sequence and Gersten complexes.
To every scheme, not necessarily smooth neither proper, we can associate its different mixed realizations (de Rham, Betti, etale, Hodge, etc) as well as its ring of periods. In this note, following an insight of Kontsevich, we prove that, after suitable modifications, these classical constructions can be extended from schemes to the broad setting of dg categories. This leads to new additive invariants, which we compute in the case of differential operators, as well as to a theory of periods of dg categories. Among other applications, we prove that the ring of periods of a scheme is invariant u…
We present an elementary construction of the non-connective algebraic K-theory spectrum associated to an additive category following the contracted functor approach due to Bass. It comes with a universal property that easily allows us to identify it with other constructions, for instance with the one of Pedersen-Weibel in terms of Z^i-graded objects and bounded homomorphisms.
We study the question of the existence of a Waldhausen category on any (relative) abelian category in which the contractible objects are the (relatively) projective objects. The associated $K$-theory groups are "stable algebraic $G$-theory," which in degree zero form a certain stable representation group. We prove both some existence and nonexistence results about such Waldhausen category structures, including the fact that, while it was known that the category of $R$-modules admits a model category structure if $R$ is quasi-Frobenius, that assumption is required even to get a Waldhausen categ…
One-sided exact categories are obtained via a weakening of a Quillen exact category. Such one-sided exact categories are homologically similar to Quillen exact categories: a one-sided exact category $\mathcal{E}$ can be (essentially uniquely) embedded into its exact hull ${\mathcal{E}}^{\textrm{ex}}$; this embedding induces a derived equivalence $\textbf{D}^b(\mathcal{E}) \to \textbf{D}^b({\mathcal{E}}^{\textrm{ex}})$. Whereas it is well known that Quillen's obscure axioms are redundant for exact categories, some one-sided exact categories are known to not satisfy the corresponding obscure axi…
We introduce and study several homological notions which generalise the discrete derived categories of D. Vossieck. As an application, we show that Vossieck discrete algebras have this property with respect to all bounded t-structures. We give many examples of triangulated categories regarding these notions.
For a recollement of derived module categories of rings, we provide sufficient conditions to guarantee the additivity formula of higher algebraic K-groups of the rings involved, and establish a long Mayer-Vietoris exact sequence of higher algebraic K-groups for homological exact contexts introduced in the first paper of this series. Our results are then applied to recollements induced from homological ring epimorphisms and noncommutative localizations. Consequently, we get an infinitely long Mayer-Vietoris exact sequence of K-theory for Milnor squares, re-obtain a result of Karoubi on localiza…
