We present the first numerical code based on the Galerkin and Collocation methods to integrate the field equations of the Bondi problem. The Galerkin method like all spectral methods provide high accuracy with moderate computational effort. Several numerical tests were performed to verify the issues of convergence, stability and accuracy with promising results. This code opens up several possibilities of applications in more general scenarios for studying the evolution of spacetimes with gravitational waves.
Axisymmetric Solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations are found in the Papapetrou-Weyl gauge. The solutions depend on two pairs of functionals, each pair of two functions depends on a different arbitrarily chosen function of one variable. Some examples are given.
The Zipoy-Voorhees family of static, axisymmetric vacuum solutions forms an interesting family in that it contains the Schwarzschild black hole excepting which all other members have naked singularity. We analyze some properties of the region near singularity by studying a natural family of 2-surfaces. We establish that these have the topology of the 2-sphere by an application of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. By computing the area, we establish that the singular region is `point-like'. Isometric embedding of these surfaces in the three dimensional Euclidean space is used to distinguish the two typ…
A new method is proposed, that establishes a one to one correspondance between the whole set of static axially symmetric vacuum GR solutions and a specific class of stationary axially symmetric scalar-Einstein solutions having a given mass and a given angular momentum. The method explicitly takes advantage of the Kerr metric Ricci flatness. This also results in a class of stationary axially symmetric vacuum, ie Kerrlike, Brans-Dicke solutions. A particular solution, that is asymptotically flat, is more closely considered. It converges to Kerr for a vanishing scalar charge, but fails to converg…
We carry out a Lie group analysis of the Sachs equations for a time-dependent axisymmetric non-rotating space-time in which the Ricci tensor vanishes. These equations, which are the first two members of the set of Newman-Penrose equations, define the characteristic initial-value problem for the space-time. We find a particular form for the initial data such that these equations admit a Lie symmetry, and so defines a geometrically special class of such spacetimes. These should additionally be of particular physical interest because of this special geometric feature.
A d-dimensional spacetime is "axisymmetric" if it possesses an SO(d-2) isometry group whose orbits are (d-3)-spheres. In this paper, algebraically special, axisymmetric solutions of the higher dimensional vacuum Einstein equation (with cosmological constant) are investigated. Necessary and sufficient conditions for static axisymmetric solutions to belong to different algebraic classes are presented. Then general (possibly time-dependent) axisymmetric solutions are discussed. All axisymmetric solutions of algebraic types II, D, III and N are obtained.
We review explicit solutions to the stationary axisymmetric Einstein-Maxwell equations which can be interpreted as disks of charged dust. The disks of finite or infinite extension are infinitesimally thin and constitute a surface layer at the boundary of an electro-vacuum. The Einstein-Maxwell equations in the presence of one Killing vector are obtained by using a projection formalism. The SU(2,1) invariance of the stationary Einstein-Maxwell equations can be used to construct solutions for the electro-vacuum from solutions to the pure vacuum case via a so-called Harrison transformation. It is…
In this paper we consider homothetic Killing vectors in the class of stationary axisymmetric vacuum (SAV) spacetimes, where the components of the vectors are functions of the time and radial coordinates. In this case the component of any homothetic Killing vector along the $z$ direction must be constant. Firstly, it is shown that either the component along the radial direction is constant or we have the proportionality $g_{ϕϕ}\propto g_{ρρ}$, where $g_{ϕϕ}>0$. In both cases, complete analyses are carried out and the general forms of the homothetic Killing vectors are determined. The associated…
We present the details of an algorithm for the global evolution of asymptotically flat, axisymmetric spacetimes, based upon a characteristic initial value formulation using null cones as evolution hypersurfaces. We identify a new static solution of the vacuum field equations which provides an important test bed for characteristic evolution codes. We also show how linearized solutions of the Bondi equations can be generated by solutions of the scalar wave equation, thus providing a complete set of test beds in the weak field regime. These tools are used to establish that the algorithm is second…
The conditions for the existence of Killing-Yano tensors, which are closely related to the appearance of non-generic world-line SUSY, are presented for static axisymmetric spacetimes. Imposing the vacuum Einstein equation, the set of solutions admitting Killing-Yano tensors is considered. In particular, it is shown that static, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat vacuum solutions admitting Killing-Yano tensors are only the Schwarzschild solution.
An explicit one-parameter Lie point symmetry of the four-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations with two commuting hypersurface-orthogonal Killing vector fields is presented. The parameter takes values over all of the real line and the action of the group can be effected algebraically on any solution of the system. This enables one to construct particular one-parameter extended families of axisymmetric static solutions and cylindrical gravitational wave solutions from old ones, in a simpler way than most solution-generation techniques, including the prescription given by Ernst for this system. …
The problem of obtaining an explicit representation for the fourth invariant of geodesic motion (generalized Carter constant) of an arbitrary stationary axisymmetric vacuum spacetime generated from an Ernst Potential is considered. The coupling between the non-local curvature content of the spacetime as encoded in the Weyl tensor, and the existence of a Killing tensor is explored and a constructive, algebraic test for a fourth order Killing tensor suggested. The approach used exploits the variables defined for the Bäckland transformations to clarify the relationship between Weyl curvature, con…
We review the similarity solutions proposed by Waylen for a regular time-dependent axisymmetric vacuum space-time, and show that the key equation introduced to solve the invariant surface conditions is related by a Baecklund transform to a restriction on the similarity variables. We further show that the vacuum space-times produced via this path automatically possess a (possibly homothetic) Killing vector, which may be time-like.
We present a method for generating exact solutions of Einstein equations in vacuum using harmonic maps, when the spacetime possesses two commutating Killing vectors. This method consists in writing the axisymmetric stationry Einstein equations in vacuum as a harmonic map which belongs to the group SL(2,R), and decomposing it in its harmonic "submaps". This method provides a natural classification of the solutions in classes (Weil's class, Lewis' class etc).
In this paper, we proved the mass angular momentum inequality\cite{D1}\cite{ChrusLiWe}\cite{SZ} for axisymmetric, asymptotically flat, vacuum constraint data sets with small trace. Given an initial data set with small trace, we construct a boost evolution spacetime of the Einstein vacuum equations as \cite{ChOM}. Then a perturbation method is used to solve the maximal surface equation in the spacetime under certain growing condition at infinity. When the initial data set is axisymmetric, we get an axisymmetric maximal graph with the same ADM mass and angular momentum as the given data. The ine…
A procedure is described for matching a given stationary axisymmetric perfect fluid solution to a not necessarily asymptotically flat vacuum exterior. Using data on the zero pressure surface, the procedure yields the Ernst potential of the matching vacuum metric on the symmetry axis. From this the full metric can be constructed using a variety of well established procedures.
Stationary, axisymmetric, vacuum, solutions of Einstein's equations are obtained as critical points of the total mass among all axisymmetric and $(t,ϕ)$ symmetric initial data with fixed angular momentum. In this variational principle the mass is written as a positive definite integral over a spacelike hypersurface. It is also proved that if absolute minimum exists then it is equal to the absolute minimum of the mass among all maximal, axisymmetric, vacuum, initial data with fixed angular momentum. Arguments are given to support the conjecture that this minimum exists and is the extreme Kerr i…
New axisymmetric stationary solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations in five-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes are obtained by using solitonic solution-generating techniques. The new solutions are shown to be equivalent to the four-dimensional multi-solitonic solutions derived from particular class of four-dimensional Weyl solutions and to include different black rings from those obtained by Emparan and Reall.
Physically admissible choice of the "essential" coordinates identified with components of the metric tensor and co-moving frame of reference reduced to the formulation of the stationary axisymmetric GR problem. Such nontraditional approach allows to obtain new 4-parametric vacuum solution. In special static case this solution becomes the set well-known GR exact solutions for degenerate vacuum gravitational fields, in some special stationary case, after transformations coincides with Kerr solution. In other special stationary case the founded solution turn into modified NUT solution.
We consider arbitrary stationary and axisymmetric black holes in general relativity in $(d +1)$ dimensions (with $d \geq 3$) that satisfy the vacuum Einstein equation and have a non-degenerate horizon. We prove that the canonical energy of axisymmetric electromagnetic perturbations is positive definite. This establishes that all vacuum black holes are stable to axisymmetric electromagnetic perturbations. Our results also hold for asymptotically deSitter black holes that satisfy the vacuum Einstein equation with a positive cosmological constant. Our results also apply to extremal black holes pr…
An analytic understanding of the geodesic structure around non-Kerr spacetimes will result in a powerful tool that could make the mapping of spacetime around massive quiescent compact objects possible. To this end, I present an analytic closed form expression for the components of a the fourth order Killing tensor for Stationary Axisymmetric Vacuum (SAV) Spacetimes. It is as yet unclear what subset of SAV spacetimes admit this solution. The solution is written in terms of an integral expression involving the metric functions and two specific Greens functions. A second integral expression has t…
We describe new numerical methods to solve the static axisymmetric vacuum Einstein equations in more than four dimensions. As an illustration, we study the compactified non-uniform black string phase connected to the uniform strings at the Gregory-Laflamme critical point. We compute solutions with a ratio of maximum to minimum horizon radius up to nine. For a fixed compactification radius, the mass of these solutions is larger than the mass of the classically unstable uniform strings. Thus they cannot be the end state of the instability.
We present the key elements of the proof of an upper bound for angular-momentum and charge in terms of the mass for electro-vacuum asymptotically flat axisymmetric initial data sets with simply connected orbit space.
The inequality $\sqrt{J}\leq m$ is proved for vacuum, asymptotically flat, maximal and axisymmetric data close to extreme Kerr data. The physical significance of this inequality and its relation to the standard picture of the gravitational collapse are discussed.
We give a preliminary report on one of the tests we have performed of a full non-axisymmetric general relativistic code. The test considered here concerns the numerical evolution of vacuum non-axisymmetric gravitational waves and their comparison at low amplitudes with theoretical waveforms obtained from linearised theory.
A new framework for analysing the gravitational fields in a stationary, axisymmetric configuration is introduced. The method is used to construct a complete set of field equations for the vacuum region outside a rotating source. These equations are under-determined. Restricting the Weyl tensor to type D produces a set of equations which can be solved, and a range of new techniques are introduced to simplify the problem. Imposing the further condition that the solution is asymptotically flat yields the Kerr solution uniquely. The implications of this result for the no-hair theorem are discussed…
Axially symmetric stationary metrics governed by the Einstein-Euler equations for slowly rotating perfect fluids have been constructed in an arbitrarily large bounded domain containing the support of the mass density. However the problem of global prolongation of the metric is still open. On the other hand the so called matter-vacuum matching problem, particularly as the source problem for the Kerr metric, has been discussed by several authors. This can be regarded as the approach to the same open problem in the opposite direction. We give a remark on this open problem.
Bondi's approach to the construction of a coordinate system is used with a different choice of gauge, in accordance with which the radial coordinate r is an affine parameter, to cast the metric tensor into a form suitable for use with the Newman-Penrose null tetrad formalism. The choice of tetrad has the result that the equations and all the functions that appear in them are real-valued. A group classification of the Sachs equations in this gauge leads to a unique expression for the first of the five independent elements $Ψ_0$ of the Weyl spinor, and to the corresponding exact solutions for tw…
We solve the Einstein vacuum-equations for the case of static and axisymmetric solutions in a system of coordinates different from the Weyl standard one. We prove that there exists a class of solutions with the appropriate asymptotical behaviour which can be written in a simple compact form, in terms of a function that must satisfies certain Cauchy-Newman problem. The relation between the choice of coordinates and the form of the metric functions that describe the solution is given by providing that analytic function which characterizes the metric as well as the gauge.
Numerical schemes for Einstein's vacuum equation are developed. Einstein's equation in harmonic gauge is second order symmetric hyperbolic. It is discretized in four-dimensional spacetime by Finite Differences, Finite Elements, and Interior Penalty Discontinuous Galerkin methods, the latter related to Regge calculus. The schemes are split into space and time and new time-stepping schemes for wave equations are derived. The methods are evaluated for linear and non-linear test problems of the Apples-with-Apples collection.
We prove that for any vacuum, maximal, asymptotically flat, axisymmetric initial data for Einstein equations close to extreme Kerr data, the inequality $\sqrt{J} \leq m$ is satisfied, where $m$ and $J$ are the total mass and angular momentum of the data. The proof consists in showing that extreme Kerr is a local minimum of the mass.
In axial symmetry, there is a gauge for Einstein equations such that the total mass of the spacetime can be written as a conserved, positive definite, integral on the spacelike slices. This property is expected to play an important role in the global evolution. In this gauge the equations reduce to a coupled hyperbolic-elliptic system which is formally singular at the axis. Due to the rather peculiar properties of the system, the local in time existence has proved to resist analysis by standard methods. To analyze the principal part of the equations, which may represent the main source of the …
We study the motion of test particle in static axisymmetric vacuum spacetimes and discuss two criteria for strong chaos to occur: (1) a local instability measured by the Weyl curvature, and (2) a tangle of a homoclinic orbit, which is closely related to an unstable periodic orbit in general relativity. We analyze several static axisymmetric spacetimes and find that the first criterion is a sufficient condition for chaos, at least qualitatively. Although some test particles which do not satisfy the first criterion show chaotic behavior in some spacetimes, these can be accounted for the second c…
We examine the effect of local matter on the chaotic behavior of a relativistic test particle in non-vacuum static axisymmetric spacetimes. We find that the sign of the sectional curvature in the geodesic deviation equation defined by the Riemann curvature does not always become a good tool to judge the occurrence of chaos in the non-vacuum case. However, we show that the locally unstable region ( LU region ) defined by the Weyl curvature can provide information about chaos even in non-vacuum spacetime as well as in vacuum spacetime. Since the Weyl tensor affects only the shear part of the geo…
Axially symmetric static vacuum exact solution (ASSVES) in Weyl coordinates are studied in $f(R)$ theories of gravity. In particular, we obtain a general explicit expression for the dependence between $df(R)/dR$ and the $r$ and $z$ coordinates and then the corresponding explicit form of $f(R)$ is obtained. Next, we present in detail the explicit solution of the modified field equations corresponding to the Newtonian potential due to a punctual mass placed at the origin of coordinates and also the Schwarzschild solution to the modified field equations.
Starting with any stationary axisymmetric vacuum metric, we build anisotropic fluids. With the help of the Ernst method, the basic equations are derived together with the expression for the energy-momentum tensor and with the equation of state compatible with the field equations. The method is presented by using different coordinate systems: the cylindrical coordinates $ρ, z$ and the oblate spheroidal ones. A class of interior solutions matching with stationary axisymmetric asymptotically flat vacuum solutions is found in oblate spheroidal coordinates. The solutions presented satisfy the three…
Recently Kordas (1995, Class. Quantum Grav. 12 2037) and Meinel and Neugebauer (1995, Class. Quantum Grav. 12 2045) studied the conditions for reflection symmetry in stationary axisymmetric space--times in vacuum. They found that a solution to the Einstein field equations is reflectionally symmetric if their Ernst's potential ${\cal E}(ρ=0,z)= e(z)$ on a portion of the positive z-axis extending to infinity satisfies the condition $e_{+}(z){e}_{+}^{*}(-z)=1$. In this note, we formulate an analogous conditions for two complex Ernst potentials in electrovacuum. We also present the special case of…
Extending recent work in 5 dimensions, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the reduced Einstein equations for vacuum black holes in $(n+3)$-dimensional spacetimes admitting the isometry group $\mathbb{R}\times U(1)^{n}$, with Kaluza-Klein asymptotics for $n\geq3$. This is equivalent to establishing existence and uniqueness for singular harmonic maps $φ: \mathbb{R}^3\setminusΓ\rightarrow SL(n+1,\mathbb{R})/SO(n+1)$ with prescribed blow-up along $Γ$, a subset of the $z$-axis in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We also analyze the topology of the domain of outer communication for these spacetime…
We investigate the existence and phenomenology of stable photon orbits (SPOs) in stationary axisymmetric electrovacuum spacetimes in four dimensions. First, we review the classification of equatorial circular photon orbits on Kerr-Newman spacetimes in the charge-spin plane. Second, using a Hamiltonian formulation, we show that Reissner-Nordström di-holes (a family encompassing the Majumdar-Papapetrou and Weyl-Bach special cases) admit SPOs, in a certain parameter regime that we investigate. Third, we explore the transition from order to chaos for typical SPOs bounded within a toroidal region a…
We show that the area-angular momentum inequality A\geq 8π|J| holds for axially symmetric closed outermost stably marginally trapped surfaces. These are horizon sections (in particular, apparent horizons) contained in otherwise generic non-necessarily axisymmetric black hole spacetimes, with non-negative cosmological constant and whose matter content satisfies the dominant energy condition.

Axially symmetric spacetimes are the only models for isolated systems with continuous symmetries that also include dynamics. For such systems, we review the reduction of the vacuum Einstein field equations to their most concise form by dimensionally reducing to the three-dimensional space of orbits of the Killing vector, followed by a conformal rescaling. The resulting field equations can be written as a problem in three-dimensional gravity with a complex scalar field as source. This scalar field, the Ernst potential is constructed from the norm and twist of the spacelike Killing field. In the…
In a seminal paper of 1917, H. Weyl presented a remarkable reduction of the static axisymmetric vacuum Einstein equations, serving as a relatively straightforward technique to generate and explore new solutions. Weyl's reduction was used by Myers in 1987, and independently by Korotkin-Nicolai in 1994, to construct a new family of static and axisymmetric solutions with compact non-empty horizon, however with non-trivial topology and asymptotically Kasner. This family, together with the Schwarzschild and the Boost families, remained until now as the only known S1-symmetric static black hole solu…
We show that the area-angular momentum-charge inequality (A/(4π))^2 \geq (2J)^2 + (Q_E^2 + Q_M^2)^2 holds for apparent horizons of electrically and magnetically charged rotating black holes in generic dynamical and non-vacuum spacetimes. More specifically, this quasi-local inequality applies to axially symmetric closed outermost stably marginally (outer) trapped surfaces, embedded in non-necessarily axisymmetric black hole spacetimes with non-negative cosmological constant and matter content satisfying the dominant energy condition.
A new class of exact solutions to the axisymmetric and stationary vacuum Einstein equations containing n arbitrary complex parameters and one arbitrary real solution of the axisymmetric three-dimensional Laplace equation is presented. The solutions are related to Jacobi's inversion problem for hyperelliptic Abelian integrals.
We present a new formulation of Einstein's equations for an axisymmetric spacetime with vanishing twist in vacuum. We propose a fully constrained scheme and use spherical polar coordinates. A general problem for this choice is the occurrence of coordinate singularities on the axis of symmetry and at the origin. Spherical harmonics are manifestly regular on the axis and hence take care of that issue automatically. In addition a spectral approach has computational advantages when the equations are implemented. Therefore we spectrally decompose all the variables in the appropriate harmonics. A ce…
This paper is concerned exclusively with axisymmetric spacetimes. We want to develop reductions of Einstein's equations which are suitable for numerical evolutions. We first make a Kaluza-Klein type dimensional reduction followed by an ADM reduction on the Lorentzian 3-space, the (2+1)+1 formalism. We include also the Z4 extension of Einstein's equations adapted to this formalism. Our gauge choice is based on a generalized harmonic gauge condition. We consider vacuum and perfect fluid sources. We use these ingredients to construct a strongly hyperbolic first-order evolution system and exhibit …
We express the complex potential E and the metrical fields omega and gamma of all stationary axisymmetric vacuum spacetimes that result from the application of two successive quadruple-Neugebauer (or two double-Harrison) transformations to Minkowski space in terms of data specified on the symmetry axis, which are in turn easily expressed in terms of multipole moments. Moreover, we suggest how, in future papers, we shall apply our approach to do the same thing for those vacuum solutions that arise from the application of more than two successive transformations, and for those electrovac solutio…
An infinite family of axisymmetric charged dust disks of finite extension is presented. The disks are obtained by solving the vacuum Einstein-Maxwell equations for conformastatic spacetimes, which are characterized by only one metric function. In order to obtain the solutions, it is assumed that the metric function and the electric potential are functionally related and that the metric function is functionally dependent of another auxiliary function, which is taken as a solution of Laplace equation. The solutions for the auxiliary function are then taken as given by the infinite family of gene…
The study of the matching of stationary and axisymmetric spacetimes with Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes preserving the axial symmetry is presented. We show, in particular, that any orthogonally transitive stationary and axisymmetric region in FLRW must be static, irrespective of the matter content. Therefore, previous results on static regions in FLRW cosmologies apply. As a result, the only stationary and axisymmetric vacuum region that can be matched to a (non-static) FLRW spacetime is a spherically symmetric region of Schwarzschild. This constitutes another uniqueness result…
This paper elaborates the problem of energy-momentum in the framework of teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity. For this purpose, we consider energy-momentum prescription derived from the integral form of the constraint equations developed in the Hamiltonian formulation of the teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity. We use this technique to investigate energy-momentum of stationary axisymmetric Einstein-Maxwell solutions and cosmic string spacetimes. The angular momentum, gravitational and matter energy-momentum fluxes of these spacetimes are also evaluated. It is concluded that…
