We introduce a variant of the large sieve and give an example of its use in a sieving problem. Take the interval [N] = {1,...,N} and, for each odd prime p <= N^{1/2}, remove or ``sieve out'' by all n whose reduction mod p lies in some interval I_p of Z/pZ of length (p-1)/2. Let A be the set that remains: then |A| << N^{1/3 + o(1)}, a bound which improves slightly on the bound of |A| << N^{1/2} which results from applying the large sieve in its usual form. This is a very, very weak result in the direction of a question of Helfgott and Venkatesh, who suggested that nothing like equality can occur in applications of the large sieve unless the unsieved set is essentially the set of values of a polynomial (e.g. A is the set of squares).
Assuming the ``exponent pairs conjecture'' (which is deep, as it implies a host of classical questions including the Lindelöf hypothesis, Gauss circle problem and Dirichlet divisor problem) the bound can be improved to |A| << N^{o(1)}. This raises the worry that even reasonably simple sieve problems are connected to issues of which we have little understanding at the present time.
We study the arithmetic (real) function f=g*1, with g "essentially bounded" and supported over the integers of [1,Q]. In particular, we obtain non-trivial bounds, through f "correlations", for the "Selberg integral" and the "symmetry integral" of f in almost all short intervals [x-h,x+h], N<x<2N, beyond the "classical" level, up to level of distribution, say, lambda=log Q/log N < 2/3 (for enough large h). This time we don't apply Large Sieve inequality, as in our paper [C-S]. Precisely, our method is completely elementary.
Let $k\geq 2$ and $\mathcal{P} (n) = (A_1 n + B_1 ) \cdots (A_k n + B_k)$ where all the $A_i, B_i$ are integers. Suppose that $\mathcal{P} (n)$ has no fixed prime divisors. For each choice of $k$ it is known that there exists an integer $\varrho_k$ such that $\mathcal{P} (n)$ has at most $\varrho_k$ prime factors infinitely often. We used a new weighted sieve set-up combined with a device called an $\varepsilon$-trick to improve the possible values of $\varrho_k$ for $k\geq 7$. As a by-product of our approach, we improve the conditional possible values of $\varrho_k$ for $k\geq 4$, assuming th…
Factorisation of integers $n$ is of number theoretic and cryptographic significance. The Number Field Sieve (NFS) introduced circa 1990, is still the state of the art algorithm, but no rigorous proof that it halts or generates relationships is known. We propose and analyse an explicitly randomised variant. For each $n$, we show that these randomised variants of the NFS and Coppersmith's multiple polynomial sieve find congruences of squares in expected times matching the best-known heuristic estimates.
An arithmetic function $f$ is called a sieve function of range $Q$, if it is the convolution product of the constantly $1$ function and $g$ such that $g(q)\ll_{\varepsilon} q^{\varepsilon}$, $\forall\varepsilon>0$, for $q\leq Q$, and $g(q)=0$ for $q>Q$. Here we establish a new result on the autocorrelation of $f$ by using a famous theorem on bilinear forms of Kloosterman fractions by Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec. In particular, for such correlations we obtain non-trivial asymptotic formulæ that are actually unreachable by the standard approach of the distribution of $f$ in the arithmetic prog…

By using a variant of Kowalski's large sieve for Frobenius in compatible systems, we obtain zero-density estimates for arguments of $\ell$-adic trace functions over finite fields with values in some algebraic subsets of the cyclotomic integers, when the monodromy groups are known. This applies in particular to hyper-Kloosterman sums and general exponential sums considered by Katz.
In this note we give two small results concerning the correlations of the Selberg sieve weights. We then use these estimates to derive a new (conditional) lower bound on the variance of the primes in short intervals, and also on the so-called `form factor' for the pair correlations of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function. Our bounds ultimately rely on the estimates of Bettin--Chandee for trilinear Kloosterman fractions.
A new Combined Sieve algorithm is presented with cost proportional to the number of enumerated factors over a series of intervals. This algorithm achieves a significant speedup, over a traditional sieve, when handling many ([10^4, 10^7]) intervals concurrently. The speedup comes from a space-time tradeoff and a novel solution to a modular equation. In real world tests, this new algorithm regularly runs 10,000x faster. This faster sieve paired with higher sieving limits eliminates more composites and accelerates the search for large prime gaps by 30-70%. During the development and testing of th…
We prove an inverse ternary Goldbach-type result. Let $N$ be sufficiently large and $c>0$ be sufficiently small. If $A_1,A_2,A_3\subset [N]$ are subsets with $|A_1|,|A_2|,|A_3|\geq N^{1/3-c}$, then $A_1+A_2+A_3$ contains a composite number. This improves on the bound $N^{1/3}$ from Gallagher's larger sieve. The main ingredients in our argument include a type of inverse sieve result in the larger sieve regime, and a variant of the analytic large sieve inequality.
For any $m \geq 1$, let $H_m$ denote the quantity $\liminf_{n \to \infty} (p_{n+m}-p_n)$. A celebrated recent result of Zhang showed the finiteness of $H_1$, with the explicit bound $H_1 \leq 70000000$. This was then improved by us (the Polymath8 project) to $H_1 \leq 4680$, and then by Maynard to $H_1 \leq 600$, who also established for the first time a finiteness result for $H_m$ for $m \geq 2$, and specifically that $H_m \ll m^3 e^{4m}$. If one also assumes the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture, Maynard obtained the bound $H_1 \leq 12$, improving upon the previous bound $H_1 \leq 16$ of Goldsto…
Let $A$ be a $g$-dimensional abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose adelic Galois representation has open image in $\text{GSp}_{2g} \widehat{\mathbb{Z}}$. We investigate the endomorphism algebras $\text{End}(A_p) \otimes \mathbb{Q} = \mathbb{Q}( π_p )$ of the reduction of $A$ modulo primes $p$ at which this reduction is ordinary and simple. We obtain conditional and unconditional asymptotic upper bounds on the number of primes at which this "Frobenius field" is a specified number field and, when $A$ is two-dimensional, at which the Frobenius field contains a specified real quadratic number fi…
We show that as soon as $h\to \infty$ with $X \to \infty$, almost all intervals $(x-h\log X, x]$ with $x \in (X/2, X]$ contain a product of at most two primes. In the proof we use Richert's weighted sieve, with the arithmetic information eventually coming from results of Deshouillers and Iwaniec on averages of Kloosterman sums.
We study the arithmetic (real) function, with f 'essentially bounded'. In particular, we obtain non-trivial bounds, through f 'correlations', for the 'Selberg integral' and the 'symmetry integral' of f in almost all short intervals $[x-h,x+h]$, $N\le x\le 2N$, beyond the 'classical' level, up to a very high level of distribution (for $h$ not too small). This time we go beyond Large Sieve inequality. Precisely, our method applies Weil bound for Kloosterman sums.
We use the Burgess bound and combinatorial sieve to obtain an upper bound on the number of primes $p$ in a dyadic interval $[Q,2Q]$ for which a given interval $[u+1,u+ψ(Q)]$ does not contain a quadratic non-residue modulo $p$. The bound is nontrivial for any function $ψ(Q)\to\infty$ as $Q\to\infty$. This is an analogue of the well known estimates on the smallest quadratic non-residue modulo $p$ on average over primes $p$, which corresponds to the choice $u=0$.
Assuming that there exist (infinitely many) Siegel zeros, we show that the (Rosser-)Jurkat-Richert bounds in the linear sieve cannot be improved, and similarly look at Iwaniec's lower bound on Jacobsthal's problem, as well as minor improvements to the Brun-Titchmarsh Theorem. We also deduce an improved (though conditional) lower bound on the longest gaps between primes, and rework Cramér's heuristic in this situation to show that we would expect gaps around $x$ that are significantly larger than $(\log x)^2$.
We decrease the length of the shortest interval for which almost all even integers in it are the sum of two primes. This is achieved by applying a version of the Circle Method that uses two minorants together with a nonnegative model for one of them. Compared to Harman's previous strongest result of this type, we in this way do not need any vector sieve type inequality and so require neither additional majorants nor strong density requirements for the minorants.
We describe a very general abstract form of sieve based on a large sieve inequality which generalizes both the classical sieve inequality of Montgomery (and its higher-dimensional variants), and our recent sieve for Frobenius over function fields. The general framework suggests new applications. We get some first results on the number of prime divisors of ``most'' elements of an elliptic divisibility sequence, and we develop in some detail ``probabilistic'' sieves for random walks on arithmetic groups, e.g., estimating the probability of finding a reducible characteristic polynomial at some st…
We apply a variant of the square-sieve to produce a uniform upper bound for the number of rational points of bounded height on a family of surfaces that admit a fibration over the projective line, whose general fibre is a hyperelliptic curve.
We generalize the classical Bombieri-Vinogradov theorem to a short interval, non-abelian setting. This leads to variants of the prime number theorem for short intervals where the primes lie in arithmetic progressions that are "twisted" by a splitting condition in a Galois extension $L/K$ of number fields. Using this result in conjunction with recent work of Maynard, we prove that rational primes in short intervals with a given splitting condition in a Galois extension $L/\mathbb{Q}$ exhibit dense clusters in short intervals. We explore several arithmetic applications related to questions of Se…
For a real number $t$, let $s_t$ be the multiplicative arithmetic function defined by $\displaystyle{s_t(p^α)=\sum_{j=0}^α(-p^t)^j}$ for all primes $p$ and positive integers $α$. We show that the range of a function $s_{-r}$ is dense in the interval $(0,1]$ whenever $r\in(0,1]$. We then find a constant $η_A\approx1.9011618$ and show that if $r>1$, then the range of the function $s_{-r}$ is a dense subset of the interval $\displaystyle{\left(\frac{1}{ζ(r)},1\right]}$ if and only if $r\leq η_A$. We end with an open problem.
