We study the arithmetic (real) function, with f 'essentially bounded'. In particular, we obtain non-trivial bounds, through f 'correlations', for the 'Selberg integral' and the 'symmetry integral' of f in almost all short intervals $[x-h,x+h]$, $N\le x\le 2N$, beyond the 'classical' level, up to a very high level of distribution (for $h$ not too small). This time we go beyond Large Sieve inequality. Precisely, our method applies Weil bound for Kloosterman sums.
For rings $\mathcal{O}_K$ of totally real algebraic integers, J. Robinson defined a set which is always $\{+\infty\}$ or of the form $[λ,+\infty)$ or $(λ,+\infty)$ for some real number $λ\ge4$. All known examples give either $\{+\infty\}$ or $[4,+\infty)$. In this paper, we construct infinitely many fields such that the set is an interval, but not equal to $[4,+\infty)$.
Let H be a Krull monoid with finite class group G and suppose that every class contains a prime divisor. Then sets of lengths in H have a well-defined structure which just depends on the class group G. With methods from additive combinatorics we establish a characterization of those class groups G guaranteeing that all sets of lengths are (almost) arithmetical progressions.
We establish arithmetical properties and provide essential bounds for bi-sequences of approximation coefficients associated with the natural extension of maps, leading to continued fraction-like expansions. These maps are realized as the fractional part of M$\operatorname{\ddot{o}}$bius transformations which carry the end points of the unit interval to zero and infinity, extending the classical regular and backwards continued fractions expansions.
Given a periodic function $f$, we study the convergence almost everywhere and in norm of the series $\sum_{k} c_k f(kx)$. Let $f(x)= \sum_{m=1}^\infty a_m \sin {2πm x}$ where $\sum_{m=1}^\infty a_{m }^2d(m) <\infty$ and $d(m)=\sum_{d|m} 1$, and let $f_n(x) = f(nx)$. We show by using a new decomposition of squared sums that for any $K\subset \N$ finite, $ \|\sum_{k\in K} c_k f_k \|_2^2 \le ( \sum_{m=1}^\infty a_{m }^2 d(m) ) \sum_{k\in K } c_{k}^2d(k^2)$. If $f^s (x)= \sum_{j=1}^\infty \frac{\sin 2πjx}{j^s}$, $s>1/2$, by only using elementary Dirichlet convolution calculus, we show that for $0<…
We show that as soon as $h\to \infty$ with $X \to \infty$, almost all intervals $(x-h\log X, x]$ with $x \in (X/2, X]$ contain a product of at most two primes. In the proof we use Richert's weighted sieve, with the arithmetic information eventually coming from results of Deshouillers and Iwaniec on averages of Kloosterman sums.
Let $E_k$ be the set of positive integers having exactly $k$ prime factors. We show that almost all intervals $[x,x+\log^{1+\varepsilon} x]$ contain $E_3$ numbers, and almost all intervals $[x,x+\log^{3.51} x]$ contain $E_2$ numbers. By this we mean that there are only $o(X)$ integers $1\leq x\leq X$ for which the mentioned intervals do not contain such numbers. The result for $E_3$ numbers is optimal up to the $\varepsilon$ in the exponent. The theorem on $E_2$ numbers improves a result of Harman, which had the exponent $7+\varepsilon$ in place of $3.51$. We will also consider general $E_k$ n…
Zhang has shown there are infinitely many intervals of bounded length containing two primes. It appears that the current techniques cannot prove that there are infinitely many intervals of bounded length containing three primes, even if strong conjectures such as the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture are assumed. We show that there are infinitely many intervals of length at most $10^8$ which contain two primes and a number with at most 31 prime factors.
It is a classic result that two number fields have equal Dedekind zeta functions if and only if the arithmetic type of a prime $p$ is the same in both fields for almost all prime $p$. Here, almost all means with the possible exception of a set of Dirichlet density zero. One of the results of this paper shows that the condition density zero can be improved to a specific positive density that depends solely in the degree of the fields. More specifically, for every positive $n$ we exhibit a positive constan $c_{n}$ such that any two degree $n$ number fields $K$ and $L$ are arithmetically equivale…
Goldston, Pintz and Yıldırım have shown that if the primes have `level of distribution' $θ$ for some $θ>1/2$ then there exists a constant $C(θ)$, such that there are infinitely many integers $n$ for which the interval $[n,n+C(θ)]$ contains two primes. We show under the same assumption that for any integer $k\ge 1$ there exists constants $D(θ,k)$ and $r(θ,k)$, such that there are infinitely many integers $n$ for which the interval $[n,n+D(θ,k)]$ contains two primes and $k$ almost-primes, with all of the almost-primes having at most $r(θ,k)$ prime factors. If $θ$ can be taken as large as $1-ε$, …
We prove a kind of "almost all symmetry" result for the Liouville function $λ(n):=(-1)^{Ω(n)}$, giving non-trivial bounds for its "symmetry integral", say $I_λ(N,h)$ : we get $I_λ(N,h)\ll NhL^3+Nh^{21/20}$, with $L:=\log N$. We also give similar results for other related arithmetic functions, like the Möbius function $μ(n)$ ($=λ(n)$ on square-free $n$).
Recently, several bounds have been obtained on the number of solutions to congruences of the type $$ (x_1+s)...(x_ν+s)\equiv (y_1+s)...(y_ν+s)\not\equiv0 \pmod p $$ modulo a prime $p$ with variables from some short intervals. Here, for almost all $p$ and all $s$ and also for a fixed $p$ and almost all $s$, we derive stronger bounds. We also use similar ideas to show that for almost all primes, one can always find an element of a large order in any rather short interval.
Let $ψ$ be a function such that $ψ(x) \rightarrow \infty$ as $x \rightarrow \infty.$ Let $λ_{f}(n)$ be the $n$-th Hecke eigenvalue of a fixed holomorphic cusp form $f$ for $SL(2,\mathbb{Z}).$ We show that for any real valued function $h(x)$ such that $(\log X)^{2-2α} \ll h(X) =o(X),$ $$\sum_{n=x}^{x+h(X)} |λ_{f}(n)| \ll_{f} h(X)ψ(X)(\log X)^{α-1}$$ for all but $O_{f}( Xψ(X)^{-2})$ many integers $x\in [X,2X-h(X)],$ in which $α$ is the average value of $|λ_{f}(p)|$ over primes. We generalize this for $|λ_{f}(n)|^{2^{k}}$ for $k \in \mathbb{Z^{+}}.$
An almost square of type 2 is an integer $n$ that can be factored in two different ways as $n = a_1 b_1 = a_2 b_2$ with $a_1$, $a_2$, $b_1$, $b_2 \approx \sqrt{n}$. In this paper, we shall improve upon previous result on short intervals containing an almost square of type 2. This leads to an inquiry of finding a short interval around $x$ that contains an integer divisible by some integer in $[x^c, 2 x^c]$ with $0 < c < 1$.
We show that the Erdős-Kac theorem is valid in almost all intervals $\left[x,x+h\right]$ as soon as $h$ tends to infinity with $x$. We also show that for all $k$ near $\log\log x$, almost all interval $\left[x,x+\exp\left(\left(\log\log x\right)^{1/2+\varepsilon}\right)\right]$ contains the expected number of integers $n$ such that $ω(n)=k$. These results are a consequence of the methods introduced by Matomäki and Radziwiłł to estimate sums of multiplicative functions over short intervals.
This is a copy of my Bourbaki Seminar on the work of Matomaki and Radziwill showing that the Liouville function exhibits cancelation in almost all short intervals as soon as the length of the interval tends to infinity.
Goldston and Montgomery [3] proved that the Strong Pair Correlation Conjecture and two second moments of primes in short intervals are equivalent to each other under Riemann Hypothesis. In this paper, we get the second main terms for each of the above and show that they are almost equivalent to each other.
In this article, we study short intervals that contain another type of "almost square", an integer $n$ which can be factored in two different ways $n = a_1 b_1 = a_2 b_2$ with $a_1, a_2, b_1, b_2$ close to $\sqrt{n}$.
We study short intervals which contain an ``almost square'', an integer $n$ that can be factored as $n = ab$ with $a$, $b$ close to $\sqrt{n}$. This is related to the problem on distribution of $n^2 α\pmod 1$ and the problem on gaps between sums of two squares.
We obtain new results about the representation of almost all residues modulo a prime $p$ by a product of a small integer and also an element of small multiplicative subgroup of $({\mathbb Z}/p{\mathbb Z})^*$. These results are based on some ideas, and their modifications, of a recent work of J. Cilleruelo and M. Z. Garaev (2014),
We determine the behavior of multiplicative functions vanishing at a positive proportion of prime numbers in almost all short intervals. Furthermore we quantify "almost all" with uniform power-saving upper bounds, that is, we save a power of the suitably normalized length of the interval regardless of how long or short the interval is. Such power-saving bounds are new even in the special case of the Möbius function. These general results are motivated by several applications. First, we strengthen work of Hooley on sums of two squares by establishing an asymptotic for the number of integers tha…
In this note we give a short and self-contained proof that, for any $δ> 0$, $\sum_{x \leq n \leq x+x^δ} λ(n) = o(x^δ)$ for almost all $x \in [X, 2X]$. We also sketch a proof of a generalization of such a result to general real-valued multiplicative functions. Both results are special cases of results in our more involved and lengthy recent pre-print.
Let $\mathbf H_2$ denote the set of even integers $n \not\equiv 1 \pmod 3$. We prove that when $H \ge X^{0.33}$, almost all integers $n \in \mathbf H_2$, $X < n \le X + H$ can be represented as the sum of a prime and the square of a prime. We also prove a similar result for sums of three squares of primes.
We decrease the length of the shortest interval for which almost all even integers in it are the sum of two primes. This is achieved by applying a version of the Circle Method that uses two minorants together with a nonnegative model for one of them. Compared to Harman's previous strongest result of this type, we in this way do not need any vector sieve type inequality and so require neither additional majorants nor strong density requirements for the minorants.
Let \( X \geq y \geq 2 \), and let \( u = \frac{\log X}{\log y} \). We say a number is \textit{$y$-smooth} if all of its prime factors are less than or equal to \( y \). In this paper, we study the distribution of $y$-smooth numbers in short intervals. In particular, for \( y \geq \exp\left( (\log X)^{2/3 + ε} \right) \), we show that the interval \( [x, x+h] \) contains a $y$-smooth number for almost all \( x \in [X, 2X] \), provided \( h \geq \exp\left( (1 + ε) \left( \frac{11}{8} u \log u + 4 \log \log X \right) \right) \), and \( X \) is sufficiently large depending on \( ε\). This result …
With the aim of treating the local behaviour of additive functions, we develop analogues of the Matomäki-Radziwill theorem that allow us to approximate the average of a general additive function over a typical short interval in terms of its long average. As part of this treatment, we use a variant of the Matomäki-Radziwill theorem for divisor-bounded multiplicative functions recently proven by the author. We consider two sets of applications of these methods. Our first application shows that for an additive function $g: \mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ any non-trivial savings in the size of …
We introduce a general result relating "short averages" of a multiplicative function to "long averages" which are well understood. This result has several consequences. First, for the Möbius function we show that there are cancellations in the sum of $μ(n)$ in almost all intervals of the form $[x, x + ψ(x)]$ with $ψ(x) \rightarrow \infty$ arbitrarily slowly. This goes beyond what was previously known conditionally on the Density Hypothesis or the stronger Riemann Hypothesis. Second, we settle the long-standing conjecture on the existence of $x^ε$-smooth numbers in intervals of the form $[x, x …
We study the arithmetic (real) function f=g*1, with g "essentially bounded" and supported over the integers of [1,Q]. In particular, we obtain non-trivial bounds, through f "correlations", for the "Selberg integral" and the "symmetry integral" of f in almost all short intervals [x-h,x+h], N<x<2N, beyond the "classical" level, up to level of distribution, say, lambda=log Q/log N < 2/3 (for enough large h). This time we don't apply Large Sieve inequality, as in our paper [C-S]. Precisely, our method is completely elementary.
We study the distribution of prime numbers under the unlikely assumption that Siegel zeros exist. In particular we prove for \[ \sum_{n \leq X} Λ(n) Λ(\pm n+h) \] an asymptotic formula which holds uniformly for $h = O(X)$. Such an asymptotic formula has been previously obtained only for fixed $h$ in which case our result quantitatively improves those of Heath-Brown (1983) and Tao and Teräväinen (2021). Since our main theorems work also for large $h$ we can derive new results concerning connections between Siegel zeros and the Goldbach conjecture and between Siegel zeros and primes in almost al…
For almost all interval exchange maps T_0, with combinatorics of genus g>=2, we construct affine interval exchange maps T which are semi-conjugate to T_0 and have a wandering interval.
We give a new heuristic for all of the main terms in the integral moments of various families of primitive L-functions. The results agree with previous conjectures for the leading order terms. Our conjectures also have an almost identical form to exact expressions for the corresponding moments of the characteristic polynomials of either unitary, orthogonal, or symplectic matrices, where the moments are defined by the appropriate group averages. This lends support to the idea that arithmetical L-functions have a spectral interpretation, and that their value distributions can be modeled using Ra…
This is the text to accompany my Bourbaki seminar from 30th March 2019, on the maximum size of the Riemann zeta function in "almost all" intervals of length 1 on the critical line. It surveys the conjecture of Fyodorov--Hiary--Keating on the behaviour of this typical maximum, as well as recent progress towards the conjecture by Najnudel and by Arguin--Belius--Bourgade--Radziwiłł--Soundararajan. There is also some general background discussion of the value distribution and large values of zeta.
We consider certain finite sets of circle-valued functions defined on intervals of real numbers and estimate how large the intervals must be for the values of these functions to be uniformly distributed in an approximate way. This is used to establish some general conditions under which a random construction introduced by Katznelson for the integers yields sets that are dense in the Bohr group. We obtain in this way very sparse sets of real numbers (and of integers) on which two different almost periodic functions cannot agree, what makes them amenable to be used in sampling theorems for these…
