We generalize the notion of and results on maximal proper quadratic modules from commutative unital rings to $\ast$-rings and discuss the relation of this generalization to recent developments in noncommutative real algebraic geometry. The simplest example of a maximal proper quadratic module is the cone of all positive semidefinite complex matrices of a fixed dimension. We show that the support of a maximal proper quadratic module is the symmetric part of a prime $\ast$-ideal, that every maximal proper quadratic module in a Noetherian $\ast$-ring comes from a maximal proper quadratic module in a simple artinian ring with involution and that maximal proper quadratic modules satisfy an intersection theorem. As an application we obtain the following extension of Schm\" udgen's Strict Positivstellensatz for the Weyl algebra: Let $c$ be an element of the Weyl algebra $\mathcal{W}(d)$ which is not negative semidefinite in the Schr\" odinger representation. It is shown that under some conditions there exists an integer $k$ and elements $r_1,...,r_k \in \mathcal{W}(d)$ such that $\sum_{j=1}^k r_j c r_j^\ast$ is a finite sum of hermitian squares. This result is not a proper generalization however because we don't have the bound $k \le d$.
Crystalline graded rings are generalizations of certain classes of rings like generalized twisted group rings, generalized Weyl algebras, and generalized skew crossed products. When the base ring is a commutative Dedekind domain, two constructions are given for producing maximal graded orders. On the way, a new concept appears, so-called, spectrally twisted group. Some general properties of it are studied. At the end of the paper several examples are considered.
Let Q be a (non-unital) simple ring. A nonempty subset S of Q is said to have zero product if S^2=0. We classify all maximal zero product subsets of Q. We also describe the relationship between the maximal zero product subsets of Q and the maximal inner ideals of its associated Lie algebra.
Based on the works of M. Marshall on multirings, we propose the fundamentals for a \textbf{non reduced} abstract quadratic forms theory in general coefficients on rings, with the machinery of multirings and multifields.
We prove that every isometry of between (not-necessarily orthogonal) summands of a unimodular quadratic space over a semiperfect ring can be extended an isometry of the whole quadratic space. The same result was proved by Reiter for the broader class of semilocal rings, but with certain restrictions on the base modules, which cannot be removed in general. Our result implies that unimodular quadratic spaces over semiperfect rings cancel from orthogonal sums. This improves a cancellation result of Quebbemann, Scharlau and Schulte, which applies to quadratic spaces over hermitian categories. Comb…
In this article, we show that for a partial skew group ring R*G, where R is a commutative ring, each non-zero ideal of R*G intersects R non-trivially if and only if R is a maximal commutative subring of R*G. As a consequence, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for simplicity; the partial skew group ring R*G is simple if and only if R is a G-simple and maximal commutative subring of R*G. We thereby generalize our previous results for skew group rings, to partial skew group rings which are not necessarily unital.
Let $D$ be a division ring with the center $F$ and $D^*$ be the multiplicative group of $D$. In this paper we study locally nilpotent maximal subgroups of $D^*$. We give some conditions that influence the existence of locally nilpotent maximal subgroups in division ring with infinite center. Also, it is shown that if $M$ is a locally nilpotent maximal subgroup that is algebraic over $F$, then either it is the multiplicative group of some maximal subfield of $D$ or it is center by locally finite. If, in addition we assume that $F$ is finite and $M$ is nilpotent, then the second case cannot occu…
Let $R$ be a finite local ring of odd characteristic and $β$ a non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form on $R^2$. In this short note, we determine the largest possible cardinality of pairwise orthogonal sets of unimodular vectors in $R^2$.
It is shown that a local ring R of bounded module type is an almost maximal valuation ring if there exists a non-maximal prime ideal J such that R/J is a maximal valuation domain.
Let D be a division ring finite dimensional over its center F. The goal of this paper is to prove that for any positive integer n there exists a in D^(n); the n-th multiplicative derived subgroup, such that F(a) is a maximal subfield of D. We also show that a single depth-n iterated additive commutator would generate a maximal subfield of D.
A fundamental result of Springer says that a quadratic form over a field of characteristic not 2 is isotropic if it is so after an odd degree extension. In this paper we generalize Springer's theorem as follows. Let R be a an arbitrary semilocal ring, let S be a finite R-algebra of constant odd degree, which is {é}tale or generated by one element, and let q be a nonsingular R-quadratic form whose base ring extension q S is isotropic. We show that then q is already isotropic.
Monogeny classes and epigeny classes have proved to be useful in the study of direct sums of uniserial modules and other classes of modules. In this paper, we show that they also turn out to be useful in the study of direct products.
The concepts of localizable set, localization of a ring and a module at a localizable set are introduced and studied. Localizable sets are generalization of Ore sets and denominator sets, and the localization of a ring/module at a localizable set is a generalization of localization of a ring/module at a denominator set. For a semiprime left Goldie ring, it is proven that the set of maximal left localizable sets that contain all regular elements is equal to the set of maximal left denominator sets (and they are explicitly described). For a semiprime Goldie ring, it is proven that the following …
Let D be a division algebra with center F. A maximal subfield of D is defined to be a field K such that CD(K) = K; that is, K is its own centralizer in D. A maximal subfield K is said to be self-invariant if it normalises by itself, i.e. ND*(K)= K: This kind of subfields is important because they have strong connexion with the most famous Albert's Conjecture (every division ring of prime index is cyclic). In fact, we pose a question that asserts whether every division ring whose all maximal subfields are self-invariant has to be commutative. The positive answer to this question, in finite dime…
We present a new approach to noncommutative real algebraic geometry based on the representation theory of $C^\ast$-algebras. An important result in commutative real algebraic geometry is Jacobi's representation theorem for archimedean quadratic modules on commutative rings, \cite[Theorem 5]{jacobi}. We show that this theorem is a consequence of the Gelfand-Naimark representation theorem for commutative $C^\ast$-algebras. A noncommutative version of Gelfand-Naimark theory was studied by I. Fujimoto. We use his results to generalize Jacobi's theorem to associative rings with involution.
The problem of determining when a (classical) crossed product $T=S^f*G$ of a finite group $G$ over a discrete valuation ring $S$ is a maximal order, was answered in the 1960's for the case where $S$ is tamely ramified over the subring of invariants $S^G$. The answer was given in terms of the conductor subgroup (with respect to $f$) of the inertia. In this paper we solve this problem in general when $S/S^G$ is residually separable. We show that the maximal order property entails a restrictive structure on the sub-crossed product graded by the inertia subgroup. In particular, the inertia is abel…
Let $R$ be a ring with unity. The graph $Γ(R)$ is a graph with vertices as elements of $R$, where two distinct vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $Ra+Rb=R$. Let $Γ_2(R)$ is the subgraph of $Γ(R)$ induced by the non-unit elements. H.R. Maimani et al. [H.R. Maimani et al., Comaximal graph of commutative rings, J. Algebra $319$ $(2008)$ $1801$-$1808$] proved that: ``If $R$ is a commutative ring with unity and the graph $Γ_2(R)\backslash J(R)$ is $n$-partite, then the number of maximal ideals of $R$ is at most $n$." The proof of this result is not correct. In this paper we present a …
Generalised quantum determinantal rings are the analogue in quantum matrices of Schubert varieties. Maximal orders are the noncommutative version of integrally closed rings. In this paper, we show that generalised quantum determinantal rings are maximal orders. The cornerstone of the proof is a description of generalised quantum determinantal rings, up to a localisation, as skew polynomial extensions.
In this paper we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for strongly group graded rings to be simple. For a strongly group graded ring $R = \bigoplus_{g\in G} R_g$ the grading group $G$ acts, in a natural way, as automorphisms of the commutant of the neutral component subring $R_e$ in $R$ and of the center of $R_e$. We show that if $R$ is a strongly $G$-graded ring where $R_e$ is maximal commutative in $R$, then $R$ is a simple ring if and only if $R_e$ is $G$-simple (i.e. there are no nontrivial $G$-invariant ideals). We also show that if $R_e$ is commutative (not necessarily maximal com…
It is proved that the ring $R$ with center $Z(R)$, such that the module $R_{Z(R)}$ is an essential extension of the module $Z(R)_{Z(R)}$, is not necessarily right quasi-invariant, i.e., maximal right ideals of the ring $R$ are not necessarily ideals. We use central essentiality to obtain conditions which are sufficient to the property that all maximal right ideals are ideals
We first show a counter intuitive result that in the ring of real valued continuous functions on $[0,1]$ non maximal prime ideals exist. This is a standard proof and a well known result. Interestingly, a non maximal prime ideal in this ring is actually contained inside a unique maximal ideal. We arrive at this result merely by looking at the zero set of ideals in this ring and by making simple geometrical observations. We end by leaving the reader with an interesting open problem that logically follows from this article.
In 1969 Höchster proved that for every quasi-compact T1-space $X$ we can find a commutative ring $R$ such that $X$ is homeomorphic to the maximal spectrum $\mathrm{Specm}(R)$ of $R$. This result implies the existence of a commutative ring $R$ that admits a non-Hausdorff and totally disconnected maximal spectrum $\mathrm{Specm}(R)$. However, there has not been an example of such a commutative ring yet. The aim of this paper is to investigate rings that almost admit a non-Hausdorff and totally disconnected maximal spectrum.
We classify the nilpotent Lie rings of order $p^8$ with maximal class for $p \ge 5$. This also provides a classification of the groups of order $p^8$ with maximal class for $p \ge 11$ via the Lazard correspondence.
In this article we revisit a problem regarding Bezout domains, namely, whether every Bezout domain is an elementary divisor domain. We prove that a Bezout domain in which every maximal ideal is principal is an elementary divisor ring
It is shown that each almost maximal valuation ring R such that every indecomposable injective module is countably generated, satisfies the following condition (C): each fp-injective module is locally injective. The converse holds if R is a domain. Moreover, it is proved that a valuation ring that sastisfies this condition (C) is almost maximal.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with a collection of ideals $\{ N_1, N_2, \dots, N_{k-1}\}$ satisfying certain conditions, properties of the set of invertible quadratic residues of the ring $R$ are described in terms of properties of the set of invertible quadratic residues of the quotient ring $R/N_1$.
We consider the Clifford algebra and the Clifford group associated with any quadratic module, degenerate or not, over an arbitrary commutative ring with 1. We determine some of the important subalgebras of the Clifford algebra under some conditions, and generalize some of the classical relations between the Clifford group and the orthogonal group of the quadratic module.
We develop a method of reducing the size of quantum minors in the algebra of n x n quantum matrices. The method is used to show that quantum determinantal factor rings of n x n quantum matrices over the complex numbers are maximal orders, when the parameter q is transcendental over the rational numbers.
We consider a convenient category of "quadratic" multirings, that allows simple functorial relations with categories associated with abstract quadratic forms theories and shares many good aspects of the theories of Special Groups and of Realsemigroups, but tries to avoids its drawbacks.
A Galois field extension $E/F$ whose Galois group is a pro-2-group of an exponent of at most 8, with a nilpotency class of at most 4, is determined, such that it contains essential information about the Witt rings of all quadratic extensions of $F$.
We study the ideal theory of amalgamated products of Ore and quadratic extensions over a base ring R. We prove an analogue of the Hilbert Basis theorem for an amalgamated product Q of quadratic extensions and determine conditions for when the one-sided ideals of Q are principal or doubly-generated. We also determine conditions that make Q a principal ideal ring. Finally, we show that the double affine Hecke algebra $H_{q,t}$ associated to the general linear group GL_2(k) (here, k is a field with characteristic not 2) is an amalgamated product of quadratic extensions over a three-dimensional qu…
We consider the natural monoid structure on the set of quadratic rings over an arbitrary base scheme and characterize this monoid in terms of discriminants.
Commutative rings in which every prime ideal is the intersection of maximal ideals are called Hilbert (or Jacobson) rings. We propose to define classical Hilbert modules by the property that {\it classical prime} submodules are the intersection of maximal submodules. It is shown that all co-semisimple modules as well as all Artinian modules are classical Hilbert modules. Also, every module over a zero-dimensional ring is classical Hilbert. Results illustrating connections amongst the notions of classical Hilbert module and Hilbert ring are also provided. Rings $R$ over which all $R$-modules ar…
Let R0 be a commutative associative ring (not necessarily unital), G a group and alpha a partial action by ideals that contain local units. We show that R0 is maximal commutative in the partial skew group ring R0*G if and only if R0 has the ideal intersection property in R0*G. From this we derive a criterion for simplicity of R0*G in terms of maximal commutativity and $G-$simplicity of R0 and apply this to two examples, namely to partial actions by clopen subsets of a compact set and to give a new proof of the simplicity criterion for Leavitt path algebras. A new proof of the Cuntz-Krieger uni…
Let $R$ be a commutative and unital semi-local ring in which 2 is invertible. In this note, we show that anisotropic quadratic spaces over $R$ remain anisotropic after base change to any odd-degree finite étale extension of $R$. This generalization of the classical Artin-Springer theorem (concerning the situation where $R$ is a field) was previously established in the case where all residue fields of $R$ are infinite by I. Panin and U. Rehmann. The more general result presented here permits to extend a fundamental isotropy criterion of I. Panin and K. Pimenov for quadratic spaces over regular …
Several topologies can be defined on the prime, the maximal and the minimal prime spectra of a commutative ring; among them, we mention the Zariski topology, the patch topology and the flat topology. By using these topologies, Tarizadeh and Aghajani obtained recently new characterizations of various classes of rings: Gelfand rings, clean rings, absolutely flat rings, $mp$ - rings, etc. The aim of this paper is to generalize some of their results to quantales, structures that constitute a good abstractization for lattices of ideals, filters and congruences. We shall study the flat and the patch …
We prove the version of Knebusch's Norm principle for simple extensions of (semi-)local rings. As an application we prove the Grothedieck-Serre's conjecture on principal homogeneous spaces for the split case of the spinor group.
A new class of rings, the class of left localizable rings, is introduced. A ring $R$ is left localizable if each nonzero element of $R$ is invertible in some left localization $S^{-1}R$ of the ring $R$. Explicit criteria are given for a ring to be a left localizable ring provided the ring has only finitely many maximal left denominator sets (eg, this is the case if a ring has a left Artinian left quotient ring). It is proved that a ring with finitely many maximal left denominator sets is a left localizable ring iff its left quotient ring is a direct product of finitely many division rings. A c…
It has been conjectured by Gene Freudenburg that for a polynomial ring, the triangular Lie algebra is the maximal Lie algebra which lies in the set of locally nilpotent derivations of the ring. Also it was conjectured that each other maximal Lie algebra which lies in the set of locally nilpotent derivations of the polynomial ring is conjugated to the triangular Lie algebra. In the present work we prove the first part of this conjecture and provide the counterexample to the second part. Also we show that the second part of the conjecture holds for the maximal Lie algebras among locally nilpoten…
In this paper, we introduce a new definitions of the Gray weight and the Gray map for linear codes over $\mathbb{Z}_9+u\mathbb{Z}_9$ with $u^2=u$. Some results on self-dual codes over this ring are investigated. Further, the structural properties of quadratic residue codes are also considered. Two self-dual codes with parameters $[22,11,5]$ and $[24,12,9]$ over $\mathbb{Z}_9$ are obtained.
The existence of a maximal ideal in a general nontrivial commutative ring is tied together with the axiom of choice. Following Berardi, Valentini and thus Krivine but using the relative interpretation of negation (that is, as "implies 0 = 1") we show, in constructive set theory with minimal logic, how for countable rings one can do without any kind of choice and without the usual decidability assumption that the ring is strongly discrete (membership in finitely generated ideals is decidable). By a functional recursive definition we obtain a maximal ideal in the sense that the quotient ring is …
Let $X$ be a connected component of the maximal orthogonal grassmannian of a generic $n$-dimensional quadratic form $q$ with trivial Clifford invariant. Consider the canonical epimorphism $ϕ$ from the Chow ring of $X$ to the associated graded ring of the coniveau filtration on the Grothendieck ring of $X$. In \cite{Kar2018} Karpenko proved that $ϕ$ is an isomorphism for all $n\leq 12$ (conjecturally for all $n$). Recently, in \cite{Yagita} Yagita showed that $ϕ$ is not an isomorphism for $n=17, 18$. In the present paper, together with Yagita's results for $n=17,18$, we show that the map $ϕ$ is…
Let $k = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrtα)$ be a real quadratic number field, where $α$ is a positive square-free integer. Let $\mathcal{O}_k$ be the ring of integers of $k$. In this paper, we prove that a certain set of $2 \times 2$ singular matrices with entries in $\mathcal{O}_k$ can be written as a product of a bounded number of idempotent matrices. Our main theorem can be viewed as a generalization of the recent result by Cossu and Zanardo, which studies finite generation of certain singular matrices by idempotent matrices over $\mathcal{O}_k$ instead of bounded generation of certain singular matrices b…
