If $R$ is a valuation domain of maximal ideal $P$ with a maximal immediate extension of finite rank it is proven that there exists a finite sequence of prime ideals $P=L_0\supset L_1\supset...\supset L_m\supseteq 0$ such that $R_{L_j}/L_{j+1}$ is almost maximal for each $j$, $0\leq j\leq m-1$ and $R_{L_m}$ is maximal if $L_m\ne 0$. Then we suppose that there is an integer $n\geq 1$ such that each torsion-free $R$-module of finite rank is a direct sum of modules of rank at most $n$. By adapting Lady's methods, it is shown that $n\leq 3$ if $R$ is almost maximal, and the converse holds if $R$ ha…
It is shown that each almost maximal valuation ring R such that every indecomposable injective module is countably generated, satisfies the following condition (C): each fp-injective module is locally injective. The converse holds if R is a domain. Moreover, it is proved that a valuation ring that sastisfies this condition (C) is almost maximal.
The problem of determining when a (classical) crossed product $T=S^f*G$ of a finite group $G$ over a discrete valuation ring $S$ is a maximal order, was answered in the 1960's for the case where $S$ is tamely ramified over the subring of invariants $S^G$. The answer was given in terms of the conductor subgroup (with respect to $f$) of the inertia. In this paper we solve this problem in general when $S/S^G$ is residually separable. We show that the maximal order property entails a restrictive structure on the sub-crossed product graded by the inertia subgroup. In particular, the inertia is abel…
It is proved that if $R$ is a valuation domain with maximal ideal $P$ and if $R_L$ is countably generated for each prime ideal $L$, then $R^R$ is separable if and only $R_J$ is maximal, where $J=\cap_{n\in\mathbb{N}}P^n$.
It is shown that a local ring R of bounded module type is an almost maximal valuation ring if there exists a non-maximal prime ideal J such that R/J is a maximal valuation domain.
Every finitely presented MV-algebra A has a unique idempotent valuation E assigning value 1 to every basic element of A. For each element a of A, E(a) turns out to coincide with the Euler characteristic of the open set of maximal ideals m of A such that a/m is nonzero.
The main scope of this paper is to introduce valuation semirings in general and discrete valuation semirings in particular. In order to do that, first we define valuation maps and investigate them. Then we define valuation semirings with the help of valuation maps and prove that a multiplicatively cancellative semiring is a valuation semiring if and only if its ideals are totally ordered by inclusion. We also prove that if the unique maximal ideal of a valuation semiring is subtractive, then it is integrally closed. We end this paper by introducing discrete valuation semirings and show that a …
Let $R$ be a valuation ring and let $Q$ be its total quotient ring. It is proved that any singly projective (respectively flat) module is finitely projective if and only if $Q$ is maximal (respectively artinian). It is shown that each singly projective module is a content module if and only if any non-unit of $R$ is a zero-divisor and that each singly projective module is locally projective if and only if $R$ is self injective. Moreover, $R$ is maximal if and only if each singly projective module is separable, if and only if any flat content module is locally projective. Necessary and sufficie…
In a valuation domain $(V,M)$ every nonzero finitely generated ideal $J$ is principal and so, in particular, $J=J^t$, hence the maximal ideal $M$ is a $t$-ideal. Therefore, the $t$-local domains (i.e., the local domains, with maximal ideal being a $t$-ideal) are "cousins" of valuation domains, but, as we will see in detail, not so close. Indeed, for instance, a localization of a $t$-local domain is not necessarily $t$-local, but of course a localization of a valuation domain is a valuation domain. So it is natural to ask under what conditions is a $t$-local domain a valuation domain? The main …
Let K be a field of positive characteristic p and KG the group algebra of a group G. It is known that, if KG is Lie nilpotent, then its upper (or lower) Lie nilpotency index is at most |G'|+1, where |G'| is the order of the commutator subgroup. The authors have previously determined the groups G for which this index is maximal and here they determine the G for which it is `almost maximal', that is the next highest possible value, namely |G'|-p+2.
It is shown that every dp-minimal integral domain $R$ is a local ring and for every non-maximal prime ideal $\mathfrak p $ of $R$, the localization $R_{\mathfrak p }$ is a valuation ring and $\mathfrak{p}R_{\mathfrak{p}}=\mathfrak{p}$. Furthermore, a dp-minimal integral domain is a valuation ring if and only if its residue field is infinite or its residue field is finite and its maximal ideal is principal.
Let K be a field of positive characteristic p and KG the group algebra of a group G. It is known that, if KG is Lie nilpotent, then its upper (or lower) Lie nilpotency index is at most |G'|+1, where |G'| is the order of the commutator subgroup. Previously we determined the groups G for which the upper/lower nilpotency index is maximal or the upper nilpotency index is `almost maximal' (that is, of the next highest possible value, namely |G'|-p +2). Here we determine the groups for which the lower nilpotency index is `almost maximal'.

Let G be a 2-group of order 2^n, n>5, and nilpotency class n-2. The invariants of such groups determined by their group algebras over the field of two elements are given in the paper.
The methods of nonstandard analysis are applied to algebra and number theory. We study nonstandard Dedekind rings, for example an ultraproduct of the ring of integers of a number field. Such rings possess a rich structure and have interesting relations to standard Dedekind rings and their completions. We use lattice theory to classify the ideals of nonstandard Dedekind rings. The nonzero prime ideals are contained in exactly one maximal ideal and can be described using valuation theory. The localisation at a prime ideal gives a valuation ring and we determine the value group and the residue fi…
We develop almost ring theory, which is a domain of mathematics somewhere halfway between ring theory and category theory (whence the difficulty of finding appropriate MSC-class numbers). We apply this theory to valuation theory and to p-adic analytic geometry. You should really have a look at the introductions (each chapter has one).
