We propose a method by which to examine all possible partial difference Lax pairs that consist of 'two by two' discrete linear problems, where the matrices contain one separable term in each entry. We thereby derive new, higher-order versions of the lattice sine-Gordon and lattice modified KdV equations, while showing that there can be no other partial difference equations associated with this type of Lax pair.
We expand the completeness study instigated in [J. Math. Phys. 50 (2009), 103516, 29 pages] which found all $2\times2$ Lax pairs with non-zero, separable terms in each entry of each Lax matrix, along with the most general nonlinear systems that can be associated with them. Here we allow some of the terms within the Lax matrices to be zero. We cover all possible Lax pairs of this type and find a new third order equation that can be reduced to special cases of the non-autonomous lattice KdV and lattice modified KdV equations among others.
We proposed the discrete Euler top in 2000. In that paper, exact solutions and conserved quantities are described. However, a Lax pair of our proposed discrete Euler top is not contained. Moreover, the Lax pair is still unknown. In this paper, from a generalized eigenvalue problem, we obtain the Lax pair of the discrete Euler top. In addition, we introduce another Lax pair of the discrete Euler top in terms of quaternions.
We introduce a family of order $N\in \mathbb{N}$ Lax matrices that is indexed by the natural number $k\in \{1,\ldots,N-1\}.$ For each value of $k$ they serve as strong Lax matrices of a hierarchy of integrable difference systems in edge variables that in turn lead to hierarchies of integrable difference systems in vertex variables or in a combination of edge and vertex variables. Furthermore, the entries of the Lax matrices are considered as elements of a division ring, so we obtain hierarchies of discrete integrable systems extended in the non-commutative domain.
A method of the formal diagonalization of the discrete linear operator with a parameter is studied. In the case when the operator provides a Lax operator for a nonlinear quad system the formal diagonalization method allows one to describe effectively conservation laws and generalized symmetries for this system. Asymptotic representation of the Lax operators eigenfunctions are constructed and infinite series of conservation laws are described for the quad system connected with $A^{(1)}_3$ affine Lie algebra, for the modified discrete Boussinesq system and for the discrete Tzitzeica equation. Fo…
A consistent set of six integrable discrete and continuous dynamical systems are suggested corresponding to arbitrary affine Lie algebra. The set contains a system of partial differential equations which can be treated as a version of generalized Toda lattice while semi-discrete systems in the set define the Backlund transform for this Toda lattice and the fully discrete representative of the set can be obtained as a superposition of such kind Backlund transforms. Four linear Zakharov-Shabat type systems taken pairwise realize Lax pairs for these six dynamical systems.
An alternative method of constructing the formal diagonalization for the discrete Lax operators is proposed which can be used to calculate conservation laws and in some cases generalized symmetries for discrete dynamical systems. Discrete potential KdV equation, lattice derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, dressing chain, Toda lattice are considered as illustrative examples. For the Toda lattice on a quad graph corresponding to the Lie algebra $A_1^{(1)}$ infinite series of conservation laws are described. Systems of quad graph equations are represented including lattice versions of the …
Fordy and Xenitidis [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 50 (2017) 165205] recently proposed a large class of discrete integrable systems which include a number of novel integrable difference equations, from the perspective of $\mathbb{Z}_\mathcal{N}$ graded Lax pairs, without providing solutions. In this paper, we establish the link between the Fordy-Xenitidis discrete systems in coprime case and linear integral equations in certain form, which reveals solution structure of these equations. The bilinear form of the Fordy-Xenitidis integrable difference equations is also presented together with the assoc…
We present a Lax pair for the sixth Painlevé equation arising as a continuous isomonodromic deformation of a system of linear difference equations with an additional symmetry structure. We call this a symmetric difference-differential Lax pair. We show how the discrete isomonodromic deformations of the associated linear problem gives us a discrete version of the fifth Painlevé equation. By considering degenerations we obtain symmetric difference-differential Lax pairs for the fifth Painlevé equation and the various degenerate versions of the third Painlevé equation.
It is well known that from two-dimensional lattice equations one can derive one-dimensional lattice equations by imposing periodicity in some direction. In this paper we generalize the periodicity condition by adding a symmetry transformation and apply this idea to autonomous and non-autonomous lattice equations. As results of this approach, we obtain new reductions of the discrete potential Korteweg-de Vries equation, discrete modified Korteweg-de Vries equation and the discrete Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries equation. We will also describe a direct method for obtaining Lax representations for …
We investigate the question of finding discrete Lax pairs for the six discrete Painlevé equations (Pn). The choice we make is to discretize the pairs of Garnier, once converted to matricial form.
A fairly complete list of Toda-like integrable lattice systems, both in the continuous and discrete time, is given. For each system the Newtonian, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations are presented, as well as the 2x2 Lax representation and r-matrix structure. The material is given in the "no comment" style, in particular, all proofs are omitted.
In this paper, we provide a comprehensive method for constructing Lax pairs of discrete Painlevé equations by using a reduced hypercube structure. In particular, we consider the $A_5^{(1)}$-surface $q$-Painlevé system which has the affine Weyl group symmetry of type $(A_2+A_1)^{(1)}$. Two new Lax pairs are found.
We discretise the Lax pair for the reduced Nahm systems and prove its equivalence with the Kahan-Hirota-Kimura discretisation procedure. We show that these Lax pairs guarantee the integrability of the discrete reduced Nahm systems providing an invariant. Also, we show with an example that Nahm systems cannot solve the general problem of characterisation of the integrability for Kahan-Hirota-Kimura discretisations.
It is well known that isomonodromic deformations admit a Hamiltonian description. These Hamiltonians appear as coefficients of the characteristic equations of their Lax matrices, which define spectral curves for linear systems of differential and difference systems. The characteristic equations in the case of the associated linear problems for various discrete Painlevé equations is biquadratic in the Painlevé variables. We show that the discrete isomonodromic deformations that define the discrete Painlevé equations may be succinctly described in terms of the characteristic equation of their La…
These lecture notes are devoted to the integrability of discrete systems and their relation to the theory of Yang-Baxter (YB) maps. Lax pairs play a significant role in the integrability of discrete systems. We introduce the notion of Lax pair by considering the well-celebrated doubly-infinite Toda lattice. In particular, we present solution of the Cauchy initial value problem via the method of the inverse scattering transform, provide a review of scattering theory of Jacobi matrices, and give the Riemann-Hilbert formulation of the inverse scattering transform. On the other hand, the Lax-Darbo…
In previous work, the dynamics of the elastic rod was recast in a Lax pair formulation, with fiducial arc length s and time t as continuous independent variables. However, the solution of these equations cannot apply directly to a system where the fiducial arc length s is a discrete variable. In this paper, we show how to discretize the continuous s variable in a way that preserves the integrability of the original system. The t parameter is not discretized, so this algorithm will be especially useful for solutions of the s-discrete and t-continuous elastic rod problem, as may occur in problem…
In the paper we derive infinitely many conservation laws for the ABS lattice equations from their Lax pairs. These conservation laws can algebraically be expressed by means of some known polynomials. We also show that H1, H2, H3, Q1, Q2, Q3 and A1 equation in ABS list share a generic discrete Riccati equation.
We present a method of determining a Lax representation for similarity reductions of autonomous and non-autonomous partial difference equations. This method may be used to obtain Lax representations that are general enough to provide the Lax integrability for entire hierarchies of reductions. A main result is, as an example of this framework, how we may obtain the q-Painlevé equation whose group of Bäcklund transformations is an affine Weyl group of type E_6^{(1)} as a similarity reduction of the discrete Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries equation.
We propose a discrete Darboux-Lax scheme for deriving auto-Bäcklund transformations and constructing solutions to quad-graph equations that do not necessarily possess the 3D consistency property. As an illustrative example we use the Adler-Yamilov type system which is related to the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation [19]. In particular, we construct an auto-Bäcklund transformation for this discrete system, its superposition principle, and we employ them in the construction of the one- and two-soliton solutions of the Adler-Yamilov system.
We introduce a class of ${\mathbb{Z}}_N$ graded discrete Lax pairs, with $N\times N$ matrices, linear in the spectral parameter. We give a classification scheme for such Lax pairs and the associated discrete integrable systems. We present two potential forms and completely classify the generic case. Many well known examples belong to our scheme for $N=2$, so many of our systems may be regarded as generalisations of these. Even at $N=3$, several new integrable systems arise. Many of our equations are mutually compatible, so can be used together to form "coloured" lattices. We also present conti…
In a previous article [N. Delice, F.W. Nijhoff and S. Yoo-Kong, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 48(3) (2015), 035206] a novel class of elliptic Lax pairs for integrable lattice equations was introduced. The present article proposes a de-autonomisation of those Lax pairs leading to a class of elliptic discrete isomonodromic deformation problems. We analyse the systems of compatibility conditions using some (possibly novel) higher order elliptic identities.
Based on the completeness relation for the squared solutions of the Lax operator $L$ we show that a subset of nonlocal equations from the hierarchy of nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) is a completely integrable system. The spectral properties of the Lax operator indicate that there are two types of soliton solutions. The relevant action-angle variables are parametrized by the scattering data of the Lax operator. The notion of the symplectic basis, which directly maps the variations of the potential of $L$ to the variations of the action-angle variables has been generalized to the…
A discretization of Painlevé VI equation was obtained by Jimbo and Sakai in 1996. There are two ways to quantize it: 1) use the affine Weyl group symmetry (of $D_5^{(1)}$) (Hasegawa, 2011), 2) Lax formalism i.e. monodromy preserving point of view. It turns out that the second approach is also successful and gives the same quantization as in the first approach.
In this paper, the semi-discrete Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy is shown in spirit composed by the Ablowitz-Ladik flows under certain combinations. Furthermore, we derive its explicit Lax pairs and infinitely many conservation laws, which are non-trivial in light of continuum limit. Reductions of the semi-discrete AKNS hierarchy are investigated to include the semi-discrete Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), the semi-discrete modified KdV, and the semi-discrete nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchies as its special cases. Finally, under the uniform continuum limit we introduce in the paper, the a…
We present the Darboux transformations for a novel class of two-dimensional discrete integrable systems named as $\mathbb{Z}_\mathcal{N}$ graded discrete integrable systems, which were firstly proposed by Fordy and Xenitidis within the framework of $\mathbb{Z}_\mathcal{N}$ graded discrete Lax pairs very recently. In this paper, the $\mathbb{Z}_\mathcal{N}$ graded discrete equations in coprime case and their corresponding Lax pairs are derived from the discrete Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy by applying a transformation of the independent variables. The construction of the Darboux tranformations is r…
Discrete analogs of the finite and affine Toda field equations are found corresponding to the Lie algebras of series $C_N$ and $\tilde{C_N}$. Their Lax pairs are represented.
We recently introduced a class of ${\mathbb{Z}}_N$ graded discrete Lax pairs and studied the associated discrete integrable systems (lattice equations). In this paper we introduce the corresponding Yang-Baxter maps. Many well known examples belong to this scheme for $N=2$, so, for $N\geq 3$, our systems may be regarded as generalisations of these. In particular, for each $N$ we introduce a generalisation of the map $H_{III}^B$ in the classification of scalar Yang-Baxter maps. For $N=3$ this is equivalent to the Yang-Baxter map associated with the discrete modified Boussinesq equation. For $N\g…
An integrable semi-discretization of complex and multi-component coupled dispersionless systems via Lax pairs is presented. A Lax pair is proposed for the complex sdCD system. We derive the Lax pair for the multi-component sdCD system through generalizing the $2 \times 2$ Lax matrices to the case of $2^{N} \times 2^{N}$ Lax matrices. A Darboux transformation (DT) is applied to the complex and multi-component sdCD systems and is used to compute soliton solutions of the systems. It is also shown that the soliton solutions of the semi-discrete systems reduce to the continuous systems by applying …
We suggest a direct algorithm for searching the Lax pairs for nonlinear integrable equations. It is effective for both continuous and discrete models. The first operator of the Lax pair corresponding to a given nonlinear equation is found immediately, coinciding with the linearization of the considered nonlinear equation. The second one is obtained as an invariant manifold to the linearized equation. A surprisingly simple relation between the second operator of the Lax pair and the recursion operator is discussed: the recursion operator can immediately be found from the Lax pair. Examples cons…
A semi-discrete Lax pair formed from the differential system and recurrence relation for semi-classical orthogonal polynomials, leads to a discrete integrable equation for a specific semi-classical orthogonal polynomial weight. The main example we use is a semi-classical Laguerre weight to derive a third order difference equation with a corresponding Lax pair.
A new set of discrete integrable equations, called face-centered quad equations, was recently obtained using new types of interaction-round-a-face solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. These equations satisfy a new formulation of multidimensional consistency, known as consistency-around-a-face-centered-cube (CAFCC), which requires consistency of an overdetermined system of fourteen five-point equations on the face-centered cubic unit cell. In this paper a new formulation of CAFCC is introduced where so-called type-C equations are centered at faces of the face-centered cubic unit cel…
The problem of construction of integrable boundary conditions for the discrete Toda chain is considered. The restricted chains for properly chosen closure conditions are reduced to the well known discrete Painlevé equations $dP_{III}$, $dP_{V}$, $dP_{VI}$. Lax representations for these discrete Painlevé equations are found.
We consider integrable boundary conditions for both discrete and continuum classical integrable models. Local integrals of motion generated by the corresponding transfer matrices give rise to time evolution equations for the initial Lax operator. We systematically identify the modified Lax pairs for both discrete and continuum boundary integrable models, depending on the classical r-matrix and the boundary matrix.
We present two types of systems of differential equations that can be derived from a set of discrete integrable systems which we call the closed geometric crystal chains. One is a kind of extended Lotka-Volterra systems, and the other seems to be generally new but reduces to a previously known system in a special case. Both equations have Lax representations associated with what are known as the loop elementary symmetric functions, which were originally introduced to describe products of affine type A geometric crystals for symmetric tensor representations. Examples of the derivations of the c…
We consider two infinite classes of ordinary difference equations admitting Lax pair representation. Discrete equations in these classes are parameterized by two integers $k\geq 0$ and $s\geq k+1$. We describe the first integrals for these two classes in terms of special discrete polynomials. We show an equivalence of two difference equations belonged to different classes corresponding to the same pair $(k, s)$. We show that solution spaces $\mathcal{N}^k_s$ of different ordinary difference equations with fixed value of $s+k$ are organized in chain of inclusions.
The Hirota-Miwa equation (also known as the discrete KP equation, or the octahedron recurrence) is a bilinear partial difference equation in three independent variables. It is integrable in the sense that it arises as the compatibility condition of a linear system (Lax pair). The Hirota-Miwa equation has infinitely many reductions of plane wave type (including a quadratic exponential gauge transformation), defined by a triple of integers or half-integers, which produce bilinear ordinary difference equations of Somos/Gale-Robinson type. Here it is explained how to obtain Lax pairs and presymple…
The Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomials $y_{n}(t)$, which are defined by a second order bilinear differential-difference equation, provide rational solutions of the Toda lattice. They are also polynomial tau-functions for the rational solutions of the second Painlevé equation ($P_{II}$). Here we define two-variable polynomials $Y_{n}(t,h)$ on a lattice with spacing $h$, by considering rational solutions of the discrete time Toda lattice as introduced by Suris. These polynomials are shown to have many properties that are analogous to those of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomials, to which they reduc…
A gradient-holonomic approach for the Lax type integrability analysis of differentialdiscrete dynamical systems is devised. The asymptotical solutions to the related Lax equation are studied, the related gradient identity is stated. The integrability of a discrete nonlinear Schredinger type dynamical system is treated in detail.
The lattice potential Korteweg-de Vries equation (LKdV) is a partial difference equation in two independent variables, which possesses many properties that are analogous to those of the celebrated Korteweg-de Vries equation. These include discrete soliton solutions, Backlund transformations and an associated linear problem, called a Lax pair, for which it provides the compatibility condition. In this paper, we solve the initial value problem for the LKdV equation through a discrete implementation of the inverse scattering transform method applied to the Lax pair. The initial value used for the…
The article deals with the problem of the integrable discretization of the well-known Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies related to the Kac-Moody algebras. A class of discrete exponential systems connected with the Cartan matrices has been suggested earlier in \cite{GHY} which coincide with the corresponding Drinfeld-Sokolov systems in the continuum limit. It was conjectured that the systems in this class are all integrable and the conjecture has been approved by numerous examples. In the present article we study those systems from this class which are related to the algebras $A^{(1)}_{N-1}$. We fou…
We study the plus and minus type discrete mKdV equation. Some different symmetry conditions associated with two Lax pairs are introduced to derive the matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem with zero. By virtue of regularization of the Riemann-Hilbert problem, we obtain the complex and real solution to the plus type discrete mKdV equation respectively. Under the gauge transformation between the plus and minus type, the solutions of minus type can be obtained in terms of the given plus ones.
Generalized lattice Heisenberg magnet model is an integrable model exhibiting soliton solutions. The model is physically important for describing the magnon bound states (or soliton excitations) with arbitrary spin, in magnetic materials. In this paper, a time-discrete generalized lattice Heisenberg magnet (GLHM) model is investigated. By writing down the Lax pair representation of the time-discrete GLHM model, we present explicitly the underlying integrable structure like, the Darboux transformation and soliton solutions.
We propose a novel semi-discrete Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation with two discrete and one continuous independent variables, which is integrable in the sense of having the standard and adjoint Lax pairs, from the direct linearisation framework. By performing reductions on the semi-discrete Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation, new semi-discrete versions of the Drinfel'd--Sokolov hierarchies associated with Kac--Moody Lie algebras $A_r^{(1)}$, $A_{2r}^{(2)}$, $C_r^{(1)}$ and $D_{r+1}^{(2)}$ are successfully constructed. A Lax pair involving the fraction of $\mathbb{Z}_\mathcal{N}$ graded matrices …
KdV6 equation can be described as the Kupershmidt deformation of the KdV equation (see 2008, Phys. Lett. A 372: 263). In this paper, starting from the bi-Hamiltonian structure of the discrete integrable system, we propose a generalized Kupershmidt deformation to construct new discrete integrable systems. Toda hierarchy, Kac-van Moerbeke hierarchy and Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy are considered. The Lax representations for these new deformed systems are presented. The generalized Kupershmidt deformation for the discrete integrable systems provides a new way to construct new discrete integrable syst…
In this paper we consider a simplest two-dimensional reduction of the remarkable three-dimensional Hirota-Ohta system. The Lax pair of the Hirota-Ohta system was extended to a Lax triad by adding extra third linear equation, whose compatibility conditions with the Lax pair of the Hirota-Ohta imply another remarkable systems: the Kulish-Sklyanin system (KSS) together with its first higher commuting flow, which we can call as vector complex MKdV. This means that any common particular solution of these both two-dimensional integrable systems yields a corresponding particular solution of the three…
We show that the multi-boson KP hierarchies possess a class of discrete symmetries linking them to the discrete Toda systems. These discrete symmetries are generated by the similarity transformation of the corresponding Lax operator. This establishes a canonical nature of the discrete transformations. The spectral equation, which defines both the lattice system and the corresponding Lax operator, plays a key role in determining pertinent symmetry structure. We also introduce a concept of the square-root lattice leading to a family of new pseudo-differential operators with covariance under addi…
We obtain the well-known discrete modified Boussinesq equation in two-component form as well as its Lax pair in $3\times3$ matrix form through a 3-periodic reduction technique on the Hirota-Miwa equation and its Lax pair. We describe how Darboux transformations and binary Darboux transformations can be constructed for this two-component discrete integrable equation. These transformations are then used to obtain classes of explicit solutions in the form of Casorati- and Gramm-type determinants. $N$-soliton solutions of the discrete modified Boussinesq equation are discussed as well when taking …
We study nonlocal reductions of coupled equations in $1+1$ dimensions of the Heisenberg ferromagnet type. The equations under consideration are completely integrable and have a Lax pair related to a linear bundle in pole gauge. We describe the integrable hierarchy of nonlinear equations related to our system in terms of generating operators. We present some special solutions associated with four distinct discrete eigenvalues of the scattering operator. Using Lax pair diagonalization method, we derive recurrence formulas for the conserved densities and find the first two simplest conserved dens…
