In this paper, we provide a comprehensive method for constructing Lax pairs of discrete Painlevé equations by using a reduced hypercube structure. In particular, we consider the $A_5^{(1)}$-surface $q$-Painlevé system which has the affine Weyl group symmetry of type $(A_2+A_1)^{(1)}$. Two new Lax pairs are found.
For all non-equivalent matrix systems of Painlevé-4 type found by authors in arXiv:2107.11680, isomonodromic Lax pairs are presented. Limiting transitions from these systems to matrix Painlevé-2 equations are found.
We present a method of determining a Lax representation for similarity reductions of autonomous and non-autonomous partial difference equations. This method may be used to obtain Lax representations that are general enough to provide the Lax integrability for entire hierarchies of reductions. A main result is, as an example of this framework, how we may obtain the q-Painlevé equation whose group of Bäcklund transformations is an affine Weyl group of type E_6^{(1)} as a similarity reduction of the discrete Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries equation.
A Lax pair for the additive difference Painlevé equation of type $E_7^{(1)}$ is explicitly obtained as certain linear difference equations of scalar form. The compatibility of the Lax pair is proved by using certain characterization of the coefficients in the Lax equation. Some Lax pairs for types $E_6^{(1)}$, $D_4^{(1)}$ and $A_3^{(1)}$ are also given by the degeneration.
The 8-parameter elliptic Sakai difference Painlevé equation admits a Lax formulation. We show that a suitable specialization of the Lax equation gives rise to the time-independent Schrödinger equation for the $BC_1$ 8-parameter 'relativistic' Calogero-Moser Hamiltonian due to van Diejen. This amounts to a generalization of previous results concerning the Painlevé-Calogero correspondence to the highest level in the two hierarchies.
This is the second article in a suite of articles investigating relations between Stäckel-type systems and Painlevé-type systems. In this article we construct isomonodromic Lax representations for Painlevé-type systems found in the previous paper by Frobenius integrable deformations of Stäckel-type systems. We first construct isomonodromic Lax representations for Painlevé-type systems in the so called magnetic representation and then, using a multitime-dependent canonical transformation, we also construct isomonodromic Lax representations for Painlevé-type systems in the non-magnetic represent…
We consider Fredholm determinants of matrix convolution operators associated to matrix versions of the $n - $th Airy functions. Using the theory of integrable operators, we relate them to a fully noncommutative Painlevé II hierarchy, defined through a matrix valued version of the Lenard operators. In particular, the Riemann-Hilbert technique used to study these integrable operators allows to find a Lax pair for each member of the hierarchy. Finally, the coefficients of the Lax matrices are explicitely written in terms of these matrix valued Lenard operators and some solution of the hierarchy a…
The extension of Painlevé equations to noncommutative spaces has been considering extensively in the theory of integrable systems and it is also interesting to explore some remarkable aspects of these equations such as Painlevé property, Lax representation, Darboux transformation and their connection to well know integrable equations. This paper is devoted to the Lax formulation, Darboux transformation and Quasideterminant solution of noncommutative Painlevé second equation which is recently introduced by V. Retakh and V. Rubtsov.
A discretization of Painlevé VI equation was obtained by Jimbo and Sakai in 1996. There are two ways to quantize it: 1) use the affine Weyl group symmetry (of $D_5^{(1)}$) (Hasegawa, 2011), 2) Lax formalism i.e. monodromy preserving point of view. It turns out that the second approach is also successful and gives the same quantization as in the first approach.
The Painlevé equations can be written as Hamiltonian systems with affine Weyl group symmetries. A canonical quantization of the Painlevé equations preserving the affine Weyl group symmetries has been studied. While, the Painlevé equations are isomonodromic equations for certain second-order linear differential equations. In this paper, we introduce a canonical quantization of Lax equations for the Painlevé equations and construct symmetries of the quantum Lax equations. We also show that our quantum Lax equations are derived from Virasoro conformal field theory.
Painleve analysis, Backlund transformation, Lax pair and periodic wave solutions for a generalized (2+1)-dimensional Hirota-Satsuma-Ito equation in fluid mechanics
A new Lax pair for the sixth Painlevé equation $P_{VI}$ is constructed in the framework of the loop algebra $\mathfrak{so}(8)[z,z^{-1}]$. The whole affine Weyl group symmetry of $P_{VI}$ is interpreted as gauge transformations of the corresponding linear problem.
An explicit form of the Lax pair for the q-difference Painleve equation with affine Weyl group symmetry of type E^{(1)}_8 is obtained. Its degeneration to E^{(1)}_7, E^{(1)}_6 and D^{(1)}_5 cases are also given.
We construct a Lax pair for the $E^{(1)}_6 $ $q$-Painlevé system from first principles by employing the general theory of semi-classical orthogonal polynomial systems characterised by divided-difference operators on discrete, quadratic lattices [arXiv:1204.2328]. Our study treats one special case of such lattices - the $q$-linear lattice - through a natural generalisation of the big $q$-Jacobi weight. As a by-product of our construction we derive the coupled first-order $q$-difference equations for the $E^{(1)}_6 $ $q$-Painlevé system, thus verifying our identification. Finally we establish th…
We consider two Lax systems for the homogeneous Painlevé II equation: one of size $2\times 2$ studied by Flaschka and Newell in the early 1980's, and one of size $4\times 4$ introduced by Delvaux-Kuijlaars-Zhang and Duits-Geudens in the early 2010's. We prove that solutions to the $4\times 4$ system can be derived from those to the $2\times 2$ system via an integral transform, and consequently relate the Stokes multipliers for the two systems. As corollaries we are able to express two kernels for determinantal processes as contour integrals involving the Flaschka-Newell Lax system: the tacnode…
In this article we prove that Lax pairs associated with $\hbar$-dependent six Painlevé equations satisfy the topological type property proposed by Bergère, Borot and Eynard for any generic choice of the monodromy parameters. Consequently we show that one can reconstruct the formal $\hbar$-expansion of the isomonodromic $τ$-function and of the determinantal formulas by applying the so-called topological recursion to the spectral curve attached to the Lax pair in all six Painlevé cases. Finally we illustrate the former results with the explicit computations of the first orders of the six $τ$-fun…
We derive the integrability conditions of nonautonomous nonlinear Schr$\rm\ddot o$dinger equations using the Lax Pair and Similarity Transformation methods. We present a comparative analysis of these integrability conditions with those of the Painlev$\rm\acute{e}$ method. We show that while the Painlev$\rm\acute{e}$ integrability conditions restrict the dispersion, nonlinearity, and dissipation/gain coefficients to be space-independent and the external potential to be only a quadratic function of position, the Lax Pair and the Similarity Transformation methods allow for space-dependent coeffic…
Given the second order scalar Lax pair of the sixth Painlevé equation, we build a generalized heat equation with rational coefficients which does not depend any more on the Painlevé variable. Étant donné la paire de Lax scalaire de la sixième équation de Painlevé, nous donnons une construction directe de l'équation de la chaleur généralisée à coefficients rationnels qui ne dépend plus de la variable de Painlevé.
In this paper, we construct a new relation between ABS equations and Painlevé equations. Moreover, using this connection we construct the difference-differential Lax representations of the fourth and fifth Painlevé equations.
Starting from the diffusion equation at beta random matrix hard edge obtained by Ramirez and Rider (2008), we study the question of its relation with Lax pairs for Painleve III. The results are in many respects similar to the ones found for soft edge by Bloemendal and Virag (2010). In particular, the values beta = 2 and 4 (but not beta = 1) allow for a simple connection with Painlevé III solutions and Lax pairs. However, there is an additional surprise for a special relation of parameters where a simple solution of the diffusion equation can be obtained, which is a one-parameter generalization…
Nous montrons que les équations du repère mobile des surfaces de Bonnet conduisent à une paire de Lax matricielle isomonodromique d'ordre deux pour la sixième équation de Painlevé. We show that the moving frame equations of Bonnet surfaces can be extrapolated to a second order, isomonodromic matrix Lax pair of the sixth Painlevé equation.
The Painlevé--Kovalevskaya test is applied to find three matrix versions of the Painlevé II equation. All these equations are interpreted as group-invariant reductions of integrable matrix evolution equations, which makes it possible to construct isomonodromic Lax pairs for them.
In this paper, we construct two lattices from the $τ$ functions of $A_4^{(1)}$-surface $q$-Painlevé equations, on which quad-equations of ABS type appear. Moreover, using the reduced hypercube structure, we obtain the Lax pairs of the $A_4^{(1)}$-surface $q$-Painlevé equations.
We propose a modification of the AKNS hierarchy that includes the "modified" Pohlmeyer-Lund-Regge (mPLR) equation. Similarity reductions of this hierarchy give the second, third, and fourth Painlevé equations. Especially, we present a new Lax representation and a complete description of the symmetry of the third Painlevé equation through the similarity reduction. We also show the relation between the tau-function of the mPLR hierarchy and Painlevé equations.
The quantum elliptic $R$-matrices of Baxter-Belavin type satisfy the associative Yang-Baxter equation in ${\rm Mat}(N,\mathbb C)^{\otimes 3}$. The latter can be considered as noncommutative analogue of the Fay identity for the scalar Kronecker function. In this paper we extend the list of $R$-matrix valued analogues of elliptic function identities. In particular, we propose counterparts of the Fay identities in ${\rm Mat}(N,\mathbb C)^{\otimes 2}$. As an application we construct $R$-matrix valued $2N^2\times 2N^2$ Lax pairs for the Painlevé VI equation (in elliptic form) with four free constan…
We establish interpolation problems related to all the $q$-Painlevé equations of types from $E_7^{(1)}$ to $(A_2+A_1)^{(1)}$. By solving those problems, we can derive the evolution equations, the scalar Lax pairs and the determinant formulae of special solutions for the corresponding $q$-Painlevé equations.
Under the Flaschka-Newell Lax pair, the Darboux transformation for the Painlevé-II equation is constructed by the limiting technique. With the aid of the Darboux transformation, the rational solutions are represented by the Gram determinant, and then we give the large $y$ asymptotics of the determinant and the rational solutions. Finally, the solution of the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem is obtained from the Darboux matrices.
The goal of this article is to prove that the determinantal formulas of the Painlev'e 2 system identify with the correlation functions computed from the topological recursion on their spectral curve for an arbitrary non-zero monodromy parameter. The result is established for two different Lax pairs associated to the Painlev'e 2 system, namely the Jimbo-Miwa Lax pair and the Harnad-Tracy-Widom Lax pair, whose spectral curves are not connected by any symplectic transformation. We provide a new method to prove the topological type property without using the insertion operators. In the process, ta…
In this paper a comprehensive review is given on the current status of achievements in the geometric aspects of the Painlevé equations, with a particular emphasis on the discrete Painlevé equations. The theory is controlled by the geometry of certain rational surfaces called the spaces of initial values, which are characterized by eight point configuration on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ and classified according to the degeration of points. We give a systematic description of the equations and their various properties, such as affine Weyl group symmetries, hypergeomtric solutions and Lax p…
We study Padé interpolation problems on an additive grid, related to additive difference ($d$-) Painlevé equations of type $E_7^{(1)}$, $E_6^{(1)}$, $D_4^{(1)}$ and $A_3^{(1)}$. By choosing suitable Padé problems, we can derive time evolution equations, scalar Lax pairs of contiguous type and determinant formulae of special solutions given in terms of hypergeometric functions, for the corresponding $d$-Painlevé equations.
The goal of this paper is to investigate the missing part of the story about the relationship between the orthogonal polynomial ensembles and Painlevé equations. Namely, we consider the $q$-Racah polynomial ensemble and show that the one-interval gap probabilities in this case can be expressed through a solution of the discrete $q$-P$\left(E_7^{(1)}/A_{1}^{(1)}\right)$ equation. Our approach also gives a new Lax pair for this equation. This Lax pair has an interesting additional involutive symmetry structure.

The rational solutions of the Painlevé-II equation appear in several applications and are known to have many remarkable algebraic and analytic properties. They also have several different representations, useful in different ways for establishing these properties. In particular, Riemann-Hilbert representations have proven to be useful for extracting the asymptotic behavior of the rational solutions in the limit of large degree (equivalently the large-parameter limit). We review the elementary properties of the rational Painlevé-II functions, and then we describe three different Riemann-Hilbert…
An interpolation problem related to the elliptic Painlevé equation is formulated and solved. A simple form of the elliptic Painlevé equation and the Lax pair are obtained. Explicit determinant formulae of special solutions are also given.
Hirota's discrete KdV equation is an integrable partial difference equation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, which approaches the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in a continuum limit. In this paper, we show that its multiplicative-discrete versions have the special solutions given by the solutions of $q$-Painlevé equations of types $A_J^{(1)}$ $(J=3,4,5,6)$.
We build analytic surfaces in $\mathbb{R}cubec$ represented by the most general sixth Painlevé equation $P_{VI}$ in two steps. Firstly, the moving frame of the surfaces built by Bonnet in 1867 is extrapolated to a new, second order, isomonodromic matrix Lax pair of $P_{VI}$, whose elements depend rationally on the dependent variable and quadratically on the monodromy exponents $θ_j$. Secondly, by converting back this Lax pair to a moving frame, we obtain an extrapolation of Bonnet surfaces to surfaces with two more degrees of freedom. Finally, we give a rigorous derivation of the quantum corre…
In arXiv:1306.2117, we found explicit Lax pairs for the soft edge of beta ensembles with even integer values of $β$. Using this general result, the case $β=6$ is further considered here. This is the smallest even $β$, when the corresponding Lax pair and its relation to Painlevé II (PII) have not been known before, unlike cases $β=2$ and $4$. It turns out that again everything can be expressed in terms of the Hastings-McLeod solution of PII. In particular, a second order nonlinear ODE for the logarithmic derivative of Tracy-Widom distribution for $β=6$ involving the PII function in the coeffici…
In this paper we study a certain recurrence relation, that can be used to generate ladder operators for the Laguerre Unitary ensemble, from the point of view of Sakai's geometric theory of Painlevé equations. On one hand, this gives us one more detailed example of the appearance of discrete Painlevé equations in the theory of orthogonal polynomials. On the other hand, it serves as a good illustration of the effectiveness of a recently proposed procedure on how to reduce such recurrences to some canonical discrete Painlevé equations.
All Painlevé equations can be written as a time-dependent Hamiltonian system, and as such they admit a natural generalization to the case of several particles with an interaction of Calogero type (rational, trigonometric or elliptic). Recently, these systems of interacting particles have been proved to be relevant in the study of $β$-models. An almost two decade old open question by Takasaki asks whether these multi-particle systems can be understood as isomonodromic equations, thus extending the Painlevé correspondence. In this paper we answer in the affirmative by displaying explicitly suita…
The `restoration method' is a novel method we recently introduced for systematically deriving discrete Painlevé equations. In this method we start from a given Painlevé equation, typically with E$_8^{(1)}$ symmetry, obtain its autonomous limit and construct all possible QRT-canonical forms of mappings that are equivalent to it by homographic transformations. Discrete Painlevé equations are then obtained by deautonomising the various mappings thus obtained. We apply the restoration method to two challenging examples, one of which does not lead to a QRT mapping at the autonomous limit but we ver…
We derive the discrete Painlevé equations associated to the affine Weyl group E$_8^{(1)}$ that can be represented by an (in the QRT sense) "asymmetric" trihomographic system. The method used in this paper is based on singularity confinement. We start by obtaining all possible singularity patterns for a general asymmetric trihomographic system and discard those patterns which cannot lead to confined singularities. Working with the remaining ones we implement the confinement conditions and derive the corresponding discrete Painlevé equations, which involve two variables. By eliminating either of…
We review some occurrences of Painlevé II transcendents in the study of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, fluctuation formulas for growth models, and as distribution functions within random matrix theory. We first discuss settings in which the parameter $α$ in the Painlevé equation is zero, and the boundary condition is that of the Hasting-MacLeod solution. As well as expressions involving the Painlevé transcendent itself, one encounters the sigma form of the Painlevé II equation, and Lax pair equations in which the Painlevé transcendent occurs as coefficients. We then consider settings which…
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the second discrete Painlevé equation in the limit as the independent variable becomes large. Using asymptotic power series, we find solutions that are asymptotically pole-free within some region of the complex plane. These asymptotic solutions exhibit Stokes phenomena, which is typically invisible to classical power series methods. We subsequently apply exponential asymptotic techniques to investigate such phenomena, and obtain mathematical descriptions of the rapid switching behaviour associated with Stokes curves. Through this analysis, we determine t…
We discretise the Lax pair for the reduced Nahm systems and prove its equivalence with the Kahan-Hirota-Kimura discretisation procedure. We show that these Lax pairs guarantee the integrability of the discrete reduced Nahm systems providing an invariant. Also, we show with an example that Nahm systems cannot solve the general problem of characterisation of the integrability for Kahan-Hirota-Kimura discretisations.
Discrete versions of the Painleve equations (dPII and qPII) over finite fields are studied. We first show that they are well defined by extending the domain according to the theory of the space of initial conditions, taking the dPII equation as an example. Then we define them over the field of p-adic numbers and see that they have a property that is similar to the good reduction of dynamical systems modulo a prime. This property is called 'almost good reduction'. We study the q-discrete analogue of the Painleve II equation in this paper, following the method in our previous work (arXiv: 1206.4…
We present a systematic method for the construction of discrete Painlevé equations. The method, dubbed `restoration', allows one to obtain all discrete Painlevé equations that share a common autonomous limit, up to homographic transformations, starting from any one of those limits. As the restoration process crucially depends on the classification of canonical forms for the mappings in the QRT family, it can in principle only be applied to mappings that belong to that family. However, as we show in this paper, it is still possible to obtain the results of the restoration even when the initial …
Recently we studied Padé interpolation problems of $q$-grid, related to $q$-Painlevé equations of type $E_7^{(1)}$, $E_6^{(1)}$, $D_5^{(1)}$, $A_4^{(1)}$ and $(A_2+A_1)^{(1)}$. By solving those problems, we could derive evolution equations, scalar Lax pairs and determinant formulae of special solutions for the corresponding $q$-Painlevé equations. It is natural that the $q$-Painlevé equations were derived by the interpolation method of $q$-grid, but it may be interesting in terms of differential grid that the Padé interpolation method of differential grid (i.e. Padé approximation method) has b…
We present a systematic and quite elementary method for constructing discrete Painlevé equations in the degeneration cascade for E$_8^{(1)}$. Starting from the invariant for the autonomous limit of the E$_8^{(1)}$ equation one wishes to study, the method relies on choosing simple homographies that will cast this invariant into certain judiciously chosen canonical forms. These new invariants lead to mappings the deautonomisations of which allow us to build up the entire degeneration cascade of the original mapping. We explain the method on three examples, two symmetric mappings and an asymmetri…
