In this paper, we construct higher-order generalizations of the $A_6^{(1)}$- and $A_4^{(1)}$-surface type $q$-Painlevé equations from the system of partial difference equations with the consistency around a cube property by periodic reduction. Moreover, we also show their extended affine Weyl group symmetries and Lax pairs.
We consider the isomonodromic formulation of the Calogero-Painlevé multi-particle systems and proceed to their canonical quantization. We then proceed to the quantum Hamiltonian reduction on a special representation to radial variables, in analogy with the classical case and also with the theory of quantum Calogero equations. This quantized version is compared to the generalization of a result of Nagoya on integral representations of certain solutions of the quantum Painlevé equations. We also provide multi-particle generalizations of these integral representations.
Higher order Painleve equations invariant under extended affine Weyl groups $A^{(1)}_n$ are obtained through self-similarity limit of a class of pseudo-differential Lax hierarchies with symmetry inherited from the underlying generalized Volterra lattice structure.
A higher-order generalization of an $A_4^{(1)}$-surface type $q$-Painlevé equation with $\widetilde{W}\left((A_{2N}\rtimes A_1)^{(1)}\times A_1^{(1)}\right)$ symmetry
A generalization of determinant formulas for the classical solutions of Painlevé XXXIV and Painlevé II equations are constructed using the technique of Darboux transformation and Hirota's bilinear formalism. It is shown that the solutions admit determinant formulas even for the transcendental case.
The general KdV equation (gKdV) derived by T. Chou is one of the famous (1+1) dimensional soliton equations with variable coefficients. It is well-known that the gKdV equation is integrable. In this paper a higher-dimensional gKdV equation, which is integrable in the sense of the Painleve test, is presented. A transformation that links this equation to the canonical form of the Calogero-Bogoyavlenskii-Schiff equation is found. Furthermore, the form and similar transformation for the higher-dimensional modified gKdV equation are also obtained.
The solutions of the discrete Painlevé equation I were constructed in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic $ψ$ functions for algebraic curves of genera one and two. For the case of genus two, there appear higher order difference equations which naturally contain the discrete Painlevé equation I as a special case.
The Volterra lattice admits two non-Abelian analogs that preserve the integrability property. For each of them, the stationary equation for non-autonomous symmetries defines a constraint that is consistent with the lattice and leads to Painlevé-type equations. In the case of symmetries of low order, including the scaling and master-symmetry, this constraint can be reduced to second order equations. This gives rise to two non-Abelian generalizations for the discrete Painlevé equations dP$_1$ and dP$_{34}$ and for the continuous Painlevé equations P$_3$, P$_4$ and P$_5$.
We explain the relation between the mixed mKdV/sinh-Gordon model and the Kudryashov's equation. Then, we use the mixed AKNS/Lund-Regge model to find a system of ODEs which is candidate to define a new transcendental function. We also applied the perturbative Painlevé test and presented the local representation for the solution of the system.
We construct a family of second-order linear difference equations parametrized by the hypergeometric solution of the elliptic Painlevé equation (or higher-order analogues), and admitting a large family of monodromy-preserving deformations. The solutions are certain semiclassical biorthogonal functions (and their Cauchy transforms), biorthogonal with respect to higher-order analogues of Spiridonov's elliptic beta integral.
This paper focuses on the construction of rational solutions for the $A_{2n}$ Painlevé system, also called the Noumi-Yamada system, which are considered the higher order generalizations of PIV. In this even case, we introduce a method to construct the rational solutions based on cyclic dressing chains of Schrödinger operators with potentials in the class of rational extensions of the harmonic oscillator. Each potential in the chain can be indexed by a single Maya diagram and expressed in terms of a Wronskian determinant whose entries are Hermite polynomials. We introduce the notion of cyclic M…
The 8-parameter elliptic Sakai difference Painlevé equation admits a Lax formulation. We show that a suitable specialization of the Lax equation gives rise to the time-independent Schrödinger equation for the $BC_1$ 8-parameter 'relativistic' Calogero-Moser Hamiltonian due to van Diejen. This amounts to a generalization of previous results concerning the Painlevé-Calogero correspondence to the highest level in the two hierarchies.
We demonstrate the way to derive the second Painlevé equation $P_2$ and its Bäcklund transformations from the deformations of the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS), all the while preserving the strict invariance with respect to the Schlesinger transformations. The proposed algorithm allows for a construction of Jordan algebra-based completely integrable multiple-field generalizations of $P_2$ while also producing the corresponding Bäcklund transformations. We suggest calling such models the JP-systems. For example, a Jordan algebra $J_{_{{\rm Mat}(N,N)}}$ with the Jordan product in the form…
We construct the elliptic Painlevé equation and its higher dimensional analogs as the action of line bundles on 1-dimensional sheaves on noncommutative surfaces.
We construct a solution of an analog of the Schrödinger equation for the Hamiltonian $ H_I (z, t, q_1, q_2, p_1, p_2) $ corresponding to the second equation $P_1^2$ in the Painleve I hierarchy. This solution is produced by an explicit change of variables from a solution of the linear equations whose compatibility condition is the ordinary differential equation $P_1^2$ with respect to $z$. This solution also satisfies an analog of the Schrödinger equation corresponding to the Hamiltonian $ H_{II} (z, t, q_1, q_2, p_1, p_2) $ of Hamiltonian system with respect to $t$ which is compatible with $P_…
The symmetry reduction of higher order Painlevé systems is formulated in terms of Dirac procedure. A set of canonical variables that admit Dirac reduction procedure is proposed for Hamiltonian structures governing the ${A^{(1)}_{2M}}$ and ${A^{(1)}_{2M-1}}$ Painlevé systems for $M=2,3,...$.
We derive the Lagrangians of the higher-order Painlevé equations using Jacobi's last multiplier technique. Some of these higher-order differential equations display certain remarkable properties like passing the Painlevé test and satisfy the conditions stated by Jurá$\check{s}$, (Acta Appl. Math. 66 (2001) 25--39), thus allowing for a Lagrangian description.
We argue the integrability of the generalized KdV(GKdV) equation using the Painlevé test. For $d( \le 2)$ dimensional space, GKdV equation passes the Painlevé test but does not for $d \geq 3$ dimensional space. We also apply the Ablowitz-Ramani-Segur's conjecture to the GKdV equation in order to complement the Painlevé test.
We compare the results of our two papers with the results of the paper Aratyn H., Gomes J.F., Zimerman A.H., Higher order Painlevé equations and their symmetries via reductions of a class of integrable models, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor., V. 44} (2011), Art. No. 235202.
All Painlevé equations can be written as a time-dependent Hamiltonian system, and as such they admit a natural generalization to the case of several particles with an interaction of Calogero type (rational, trigonometric or elliptic). Recently, these systems of interacting particles have been proved to be relevant in the study of $β$-models. An almost two decade old open question by Takasaki asks whether these multi-particle systems can be understood as isomonodromic equations, thus extending the Painlevé correspondence. In this paper we answer in the affirmative by displaying explicitly suita…
We give Bäcklund transformations for first and second Painlevé hierarchies. These Bäcklund transformations are generalization of known Bäcklund transformations of the first and second Painlevé equations and they relate the considered hierarchies to new hierarchies of Painlevé-type equations.
In this survey we present the interpretation of isomondromy preserving equations on Riemann surfaces with marked points as reduced Hamiltonian systems. The upstairs space is the space of smooth connections of GL(N) bundles with simple poles in the marked points. We discuss relations of these equations with the Whitham quantization of the Hitchin systems and with the classical limit of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard equations. The main example is the one-parameter family of Painlevé VI equation and its multicomponent generalization.
We discuss the relation between the cluster integrable systems and $q$-difference Painlevé equations. The Newton polygons corresponding to these integrable systems are all 16 convex polygons with a single interior point. The Painlevé dynamics is interpreted as deautonomization of the discrete flows, generated by a sequence of the cluster quiver mutations, supplemented by permutations of quiver vertices. We also define quantum $q$-Painlevé systems by quantization of the corresponding cluster variety. We present formal solution of these equations for the case of pure gauge theory using $q$-defor…
Starting from the diffusion equation at beta random matrix hard edge obtained by Ramirez and Rider (2008), we study the question of its relation with Lax pairs for Painleve III. The results are in many respects similar to the ones found for soft edge by Bloemendal and Virag (2010). In particular, the values beta = 2 and 4 (but not beta = 1) allow for a simple connection with Painlevé III solutions and Lax pairs. However, there is an additional surprise for a special relation of parameters where a simple solution of the diffusion equation can be obtained, which is a one-parameter generalization…
We prove the meromorphy of solutions for a wide class of ordinary differential equations. These equations are given by invariant manifolds of non-linear partial differential equations integrable by the inverse scattering method. Some higher analogues of the Painlev\' e equations are considered as examples.
We show that the Painlev{é} VI equation has an equivalent form of the non-autonomous Zhukovsky-Volterra gyrostat. This system is a generalization of the Euler top in $C^3$ and include the additional constant gyrostat momentum. The quantization of its autonomous version is achieved by the reflection equation. The corresponding quadratic algebra generalizes the Sklyanin algebra. As by product we define integrable XYZ spin chain on a finite lattice with new boundary conditions.
In this paper we study the equation $$ w^{(4)} = 5 w" (w^2 - w') + 5 w (w')^2 - w^5 + (λz + α)w + γ, $$ which is one of the higher-order Painlevé equations (i.e., equations in the polynomial class having the Painlevé property). Like the classical Painlevé equations, this equation admits a Hamiltonian formulation, Bäcklund transformations and families of rational and special functions. We prove that this equation considered as a Hamiltonian system with parameters $γ/λ= 3 k$, $γ/λ= 3 k - 1$, $k \in \mathbb{Z}$, is not integrable in Liouville sense by means of rational first integrals. To do that…
Two-component hyperbolic system of equations generated by ordinary differential Painlevé I \[ u_{yy}=6u^2+y \] and Painlevé III \[ yuu_{yy}=yu^2_{y}-uu_y+δy+βu+αu^3 +γyu^4 \] equations are considered, where $α, β, γ, δ$ are complex numbers. The structure of characteristic Lie rings is studied and higher symmetries of Lie-Bäcklund are obtained.
These are the lecture notes for a course on exceptional polynomials taught at the \textit{AIMS-Volkswagen Stiftung Workshop on Introduction to Orthogonal Polynomials and Applications} that took place in Douala (Cameroon) from October 5-12, 2018. They summarize the basic results and construction of exceptional poynomials, developed over the past ten years. In addition, some new results are presented on the construction of rational solutions to Painlevé equation PIV and its higher order generalizations that belong to the $A_{2n}^{(1)}$-Painlevé hierarchy. The construction is based on dressing ch…
The Lie point symmetries of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that are candidates for having the Painlevé property are explored for ODEs of order $n =2, \dots ,5$. Among the 6 ODEs identifying the Painlevé transcendents only $P_{III}$, $P_V$ and $P_{VI}$ have nontrivial symmetry algebras and that only for very special values of the parameters. In those cases the transcendents can be expressed in terms of simpler functions, i.e. elementary functions, solutions of linear equations, elliptic functions or Painlevé transcendents occurring at lower order. For higher order or higher degree ODEs …
The universal character is a generalization of the Schur function attached to a pair of partitions. We study an integrable system of q-difference equations satisfied by the universal characters, which is an extension of the q-KP hierarchy and is called the lattice q-UC hierarchy. We describe the lattice q-UC hierarchy as a compatibility condition of its associated linear system (Lax formalism) and explore an application to the q-Painleve equations via similarity reduction. In particular a higher-order analogue of the q-Painleve VI equation is presented.
As Fredholm determinants are more and more frequent in the context of stochastic integrability, we unveil the existence of a common framework in many integrable systems where they appear. This consists in a quasi-universal hierarchy of equations, partly unifying an integro-differential generalization of the Painlevé II hierarchy, the finite-time solutions of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, multi-critical fermions at finite temperature and a notable solution to the Zakharov-Shabat system associated to the largest real eigenvalue in the real Ginibre ensemble. As a byproduct, we obtain the expl…
Considering the importance of ever-increasing interest in exploring localized waves, we investigate a generalized (3+1)-dimensional Hirota-Satsuma-Ito equation describing the unidirectional propagation of shallow-water waves and perform Painlevé analysis to understand its integrability nature. We construct the explicit form of higher-order rogue wave solutions by adopting Hirota's bilinearization and generalized polynomial functions. Further, we explore their dynamics in detail, depicting different pattern formation that reveal potential advantages with available arbitrary constants in their m…
We investigate semi-classical generalizations of the Charlier and Meixner polynomials, which are discrete orthogonal polynomials that satisfy three-term recurrence relations. It is shown that the coefficients in these recurrence relations can be expressed in terms of Wronskians of modified Bessel functions and confluent hypergeometric functions, respectively for the generalized Charlier and generalized Meixner polynomials. These Wronskians arise in the description of special function solutions of the third and fifth Painlevé equations.
We establish a matrix generalization of the ultradiscrete fourth Painlevé equation (ud-PIV). Well-defined multicomponent systems that permit ultradiscretization are obtained using an approach that relies on a group defined by constraints imposed by the requirement of a consistent evolution of the systems. The ultradiscrete limit of these systems yields coupled multicomponent ultradiscrete systems that generalize ud-PIV. The dynamics, irreducibility, and integrability of the matrix valued ultradiscrete systems are studied.
We consider a two dimensional quantum Hamiltonian separable in Cartesian coordinates and allowing a fifth-order integral of motion. We impose the superintegrablity condition and find all doubly exotic superintegrable potentials (i.e potentials V (x, y) = V_1(x)+V_2(y) where neither V_1(x) nor V_2(y) satisfy a linear ODE) allowing the existence of such an integral. All of these potentials are found to have the Painlevé property. Most of them are expressed in terms of known Painlevé transcendents or elliptic functions but some may represent new higher order Painlevé transcendents.
The discrete Painlevé I equation (dP$\rm_I$) is an integrable difference equation which has the classical first Painlevé equation (P$\rm_I$) as a continuum limit. dP$\rm_I$ is believed to be integrable because it is the discrete isomonodromy condition for an associated (single-valued) linear problem. In this paper, we derive higher-order difference equations as isomonodromy conditions that are associated to the same linear deformation problem. These form a hierarchy that may be compared to hierarchies of integrable ordinary differential equations (ODEs). We strengthen this comparison by contin…
In this paper, we consider Cauchy problem for the modified Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy on the real line with decaying initial data. Using the Riemann--Hilbert formulation and nonlinear steepest descent method, we derive a uniform asymptotic expansion to all orders in powers of $t^{-1/(2n+1)}$ with smooth coefficients of the variable $(-1)^{n+1}x((2n+1) t)^{-1/(2n+1)}$ in the self-similarity region for the solution of $n$-th member of the hierarchy. It turns out that the leading asymptotics is described by a family of special solutions of the Painlevé II hierarchy, which generalize the classica…
We construct an elliptic generalization of the Schlesinger system (ESS) with positions of marked points on an elliptic curve and its modular parameter as independent variables (the parameters in the moduli space of the complex structure). ESS is a non-autonomous Hamiltonian system with pair-wise commuting Hamiltonians. The system is bihamiltonian with respect to the linear and the quadratic Poisson brackets. The latter are the multi-color generalization of the Sklyanin-Feigin-Odeskii classical algebras. We give the Lax form of the ESS. The Lax matrix defines a connection of a flat bundle of de…
A theoretical foundation for a generalization of the elliptic difference Painlevé equation to higher dimensions is provided in the framework of birational Weyl group action on the space of point configurations in general position in a projective space. By introducing an elliptic parametrization of point configurations, a realization of the Weyl group is proposed as a group of Cremona transformations containing elliptic functions in the coefficients. For this elliptic Cremona system, a theory of $τ$-functions is developed to translate it into a system of bilinear equations of Hirota-Miwa type f…
We rigorously compute the integrable system for the limiting $(N\rightarrow\infty)$ distribution function of the extreme momentum of $N$ noninteracting fermions when confined to an anharmonic trap $V(q)=q^{2n}$ for $n\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}$ at positive temperature. More precisely, the edge momentum statistics in the harmonic trap $n=1$ are known to obey the weak asymmetric KPZ crossover law which is realized via the finite temperature Airy kernel determinant or equivalently via a Painlevé-II integro-differential transcendent, cf. \cite{LW,ACQ}. For general $n\geq 2$, a novel higher order finit…

We revisit the enumeration problems of random discrete surfaces (RDS) based on solutions of the discrete equations derived from the matrix models. For RDS made of squares, the recursive coefficients of orthogonal polynomials associated with the quartic matrix model satisfy the discrete type I Painlevé equation. Through the use of generating function techniques, we show that the planar contribution to the free energy is controlled by the Catalan numbers. We also develop a new systematic scheme of calculating higher-genus contributions to the topological expansion of the free energy of matrix mo…
We extend the work of Fuchs, Painlevé and Manin on a Calogero-like expression of the sixth Painlevé equation (the ``Painlevé-Calogero correspondence'') to the other five Painlevé equations. The Calogero side of the sixth Painlevé equation is known to be a non-autonomous version of the (rank one) elliptic model of Inozemtsev's extended Calogero systems. The fifth and fourth Painlevé equations correspond to the hyperbolic and rational models in Inozemtsev's classification. Those corresponding to the third, second and first are seemingly new. We further extend the correspondence to the higher ran…

The universal character is a polynomial attached to a pair of partitions and is a generalization of the Schur polynomial. In this paper, we introduce an integrable system of q-difference lattice equations satisfied by the universal character, and call it the lattice q-UC hierarchy. We regard it as generalizing both q-KP and q-UC hierarchies. Suitable similarity and periodic reductions of the hierarchy yield the q-difference Painleve equations of types $A_{2g+1}^{(1)}$ $(g \geq 1)$, $D_5^{(1)}$, and $E_6^{(1)}$. As its consequence, a class of algebraic solutions of the q-Painleve equations is r…
An analysis of possible extension of the Painlevé test, to encompass the one-dimensional Vlasov equation, is performed. The extending requires a nontrivial generalization of the test. The proposed singularity analysis provides classification of the solutions possessing the Painlevé property by the order and number of pole surfaces. The compatibility conditions for the Laurent series have the form of an overdetermined system of 1st order differential equations, which themselves need a compatibility condition. This eventually leads to constraints which implicitly yield a family of solutions. The…
The sigma form of the Painlev{é} VI equation contains four arbitrary parameters and generically the solutions can be said to be genuinely ``nonlinear'' because they do not satisfy linear differential equations of finite order. However, when there are certain restrictions on the four parameters there exist one parameter families of solutions which do satisfy (Fuchsian) differential equations of finite order. We here study this phenomena of Fuchsian solutions to the Painlev{é} equation with a focus on the particular PVI equation which is satisfied by the diagonal correlation function C(N,N) of t…
The last decades saw growing interest across multiple disciplines in nonlinear phenomena described by partial differential equations (PDE). Integrability of such equations is tightly related with the Painleve property - solutions being free from moveable critical singularities. The problem of Painleve classification of ordinary and partial nonlinear differential equations lasting since the end of XIX century saw significant advances for the equation of lower (mainly up to fourth with rare exceptions) order, however not that much for the equations of higher orders. Recent works of the author ha…
