A novel symmetry decomposition approach is introduced to derive the so-called ``Painlevé solitons'' of the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) system. These Painlevé solitons propagate against a background governed by a Painlevé transcendent, establishing a fundamental generalization of the well-known elliptic solitons concept. We demonstrate that while elliptic solitons arise from the combination of translation invariance and square eigenfunction symmetry, a \textit{different} symmetry combination-scaling invariance, Galilean invariance, and square eigenfunction symmetry-generates ``Painlevé IV solitons'' for the AKNS system. This discovery represents a significant theoretical advance in integrable systems theory. By selecting special solutions of the Painlevé IV equation, we obtain explicit forms of several previously unknown classes of solutions for the AKNS system and the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation: irrational algebraic solitons, rational algebraic solitons, and parabolic cylindrical function solitons. These results dramatically expand the known solution landscape of one of the most important integrable models in mathematical physics, with broad implications for nonlinear wave phenomena across multiple physical disciplines including optics, Bose-Einstein condensates, and fluid dynamics.
Using deformations of associative products, derivative nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) hierarchies are recovered as AKNS-type hierarchies. Since the latter can also be formulated as Gelfand-Dickey-type Lax hierarchies, a recently developed method to obtain 'functional representations' can be applied. We actually consider hierarchies with dependent variables in any (possibly noncommutative) associative algebra, e.g., an algebra of matrices of functions. This also covers the case of hierarchies of coupled DNLS equations.
We show that a well known for NLS equation scaling invariance and Galilean invariance property of its solutions can be extended with appropriate modifications to the whole AKNS hierahchy and its reduced and deformed versions.
We relate the scattering theory of the focusing AKNS system with vanishing boundary conditions to that of the matrix Schroedinger equation. The corresponding Miura transformation which allows this connection, converts the focusing matrix nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation into a new nonlocal integrable equation. We apply the matrix triplet method to derive the multisoliton solutions of the nonlocal integrable equation, thus proposing a new method to solve the matrix NLS equation.
We construct the generalized Darboux transformation with arbitrary functions in time $t$ for the AKNS equation with self-consistent sources (AKNSESCS) which, in contrast with the Darboux transformation for the AKNS equation, provides a non-auto-Bäcklund transformation between two AKNSESCSs with different degrees of sources. The formula for N-times repeated generalized Darboux transformation is proposed. By reduction the generalized Darboux transformation with arbitrary functions in time $t$ for the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation with self-consistent sources (NLSESCS) is obtained and enables us…
We express AKNS hierarchies, admitting reductions to matrix NLS and matrix mKdV hierarchies, in terms of a bidifferential graded algebra. Application of a universal result in this framework quickly generates an infinite family of exact solutions, including e.g. the matrix solitons in the focusing NLS case. Exploiting a general Miura transformation, we recover the generalized Heisenberg magnet hierarchy and establish a corresponding solution formula for it. Simply by exchanging the roles of the two derivations of the bidifferential graded algebra, we recover "negative flows", leading to an exte…
In this paper the Galilean, scaling and translational self--similarity conditions for the AKNS hierarchy are analysed geometrically in terms of the infinite dimensional Grassmannian. The string equations found recently by non--scaling limit analysis of the one--matrix model are shown to correspond to the Galilean self--similarity condition for this hierarchy. We describe, in terms of the initial data for the zero--curvature 1--form of the AKNS hierarchy, the moduli space of these self--similar solutions in the Sato Grassmannian. As a byproduct we characterize the points in the Segal--Wilson Gr…
In this paper, we are going to solve nonlinear nonlocal reverse-time six-component six-order AKNS system. We used reverse-time reduction to reduce the coupled system to an integrable six-order NLS-type equation. Starting from the spectral problem of the AKNS system, a Riemann-Hilbert problem will be formulated. This formulation allows to generate soliton solutions by using the vectors lying in the kernel of the matrix Jost solutions. When reflection coefficients are zeros, the jump matrix is identity and the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem yields soliton solutions, leading to explore the…
We study two members of the multi-component AKNS hierarchy. These are multi-NLS and multi-MKdV systems. We derive the Hirota bilinear forms of these equations and obtain soliton solutions. We find all possible local and nonlocal reductions of these systems of equations and give a prescription to obtain their soliton solutions. We derive also $(2+1)$-dimensional extensions of the multi-component AKNS systems.
Superpositions of hierarchies of integrable equations are also integrable. The superposed equations, such as the Hirota equations in the AKNS hierarchy, cannot be considered as new integrable equations. Furthermore if one applies the Hirota bilinear method to these equations one obtains the same $N$-soliton solutions of the generating equation which differ only by the dispersion relations. Similar discussions can be made for the locally and nonlocally reduced equations as well. We give, as an example, AKNS system of equations in $(1+1)$-dimensions.
In this paper, we take ODE reductions of the general nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) AKNS system, and reduce them to Painlevé type equations. Specifically, the stationary solution is solved in terms of elliptic functions, and the similarity solution is solved in terms of the Painlevé IV transcendent. Since a number of newly proposed integrable 'nonlocal' NLS variants (the PT-symmetric nonlocal NLS, the reverse time NLS, and the reverse space-time NLS) are derivable as specific cases of this system, a consequence is that the nonlocal Painlevé type ODEs obtained from these nonlocal variants…
We study standard and nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations obtained from the coupled NLS system of equations (Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) equations) by using standard and nonlocal reductions respectively. By using the Hirota bilinear method we first find soliton solutions of the coupled NLS system of equations then using the reduction formulas we find the soliton solutions of the standard and nonlocal NLS equations. We give examples for particular values of the parameters and plot the function $|q(t,x)|^2$ for the standard and nonlocal NLS equations.
The objective of this work is to explore the class of equations of the Non-linear Schrodinger type by employing the Adler-Kostant-Symes theorem and the Tu methodology. In the first part of the work, the AKS theory is discussed in detail showing how to obtain the non-linear equations starting from a suitably chosen spectral problem.Equations derived by this method include different members of the NLS family like the NLS, the coupled KdV type NLS, the generalized NLS, the vector NLS, the Derivative NLS, the Chen-Lee-Liu and the Kundu-Eckhaus equations. In the second part of the paper, the steps i…
We study the asymptotic behavior of Riemann-Hilbert problems (RHP) arising in the AKNS hierarchy of integrable equations. Our analysis is based on the $\dbar$-steepest descent method. We consider RHPs arising from the inverse scattering transform of the AKNS hierarchy with $H^{1,1}(\R)$ initial data. The analysis will be divided into three regions: fast decay region, oscillating region and self-similarity region (the Painlevé region). The resulting formulas can be directly applied to study the long-time asymptotic of the solutions of integrable equations such as NLS, mKdV and their higher-orde…
We consider space discretizations of the matrix Zakharov-Shabat AKNS scheme, in particular the discrete matrix non-linear Scrhrödinger (DNLS) model, and the matrix generalization of the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) model, which is the more widely acknowledged discretization. We focus on the derivation of solutions via local Darboux transforms for both discretizations, and we derive novel solutions via generic solutions of the associated discrete linear equations. The continuum analogue is also discussed, and as an example we identify solutions of the matrix NLS equation in terms of the heat kernel. In …
We propose a scheme for nonlinearizing linear equations to generate integrable nonlinear systems of both the AKNS and the KN classes, based on the simple idea of dimensional analysis and detecting the building blocks of the Lax pair. Along with the well known equations we discover a novel integrable hierarchy of higher order nonholonomic deformations for the AKNS family, e.g. for the KdV, the mKdV, the NLS and the SG equation, showing thus a two-fold universality of the recently found deformation for the KdV equation.
We present nonlocal integrable reductions of super AKNS coupled equations. By the use of nonlocal reductions of Ablowitz and Musslimani we find new super integrable equations. In particular we introduce nonlocal super NLS equations and the nonlocal super mKdV equations.
We present some nonlocal integrable systems by using the Ablowitz-Musslimani nonlocal reductions. We first present all possible nonlocal reductions of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) systems. We give soliton solutions of these nonlocal equations by using the Hirota method. We extend the nonlocal NLS equation to nonlocal Fordy-Kulish equations by utilizing the nonlocal reduction to the Fordy-Kulish system on symmetric spaces. We also consider the super AKNS system and then show that Ablowitz-Musslimani nonlocal reduction can be extended to super integrable equa…
Using a bidifferential graded algebra approach to integrable partial differential or difference equations, a unified treatment of continuous, semi-discrete (Ablowitz-Ladik) and fully discrete matrix NLS systems is presented. These equations originate from a universal equation within this framework, by specifying a representation of the bidifferential graded algebra and imposing a reduction. By application of a general result, corresponding families of exact solutions are obtained that in particular comprise the matrix soliton solutions in the focusing NLS case. The solutions are parametrised i…
A nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation was recently found by the authors and shown to be an integrable infinite dimensional Hamiltonian equation. Unlike the classical (local) case, here the nonlinearly induced "potential" is $PT$ symmetric thus the nonlocal NLS equation is also $PT$ symmetric. In this paper, new {\it reverse space-time} and {\it reverse time} nonlocal nonlinear integrable equations are introduced. They arise from remarkably simple symmetry reductions of general AKNS scattering problems where the nonlocality appears in both space and time or time alone. They are integr…
A linear system, which generates a Moyal-deformed two-dimensional soliton equation as integrability condition, can be extended to a three-dimensional linear system, treating the deformation parameter as an additional coordinate. The supplementary integrability conditions result in a first order differential equation with respect to the deformation parameter, the flow of which commutes with the flow of the deformed soliton equation. In this way, a deformed soliton hierarchy can be extended to a bigger hierarchy by including the corresponding deformation equations. We prove the extended hierarch…
A study of general rogue waves in some integrable reverse time nonlocal nonlinear equations is presented. Specifically, the reverse time nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and nonlocal Davey-Stewartson (DS) equations are investigated, which are nonlocal reductions from the AKNS hierarchy. By using Darboux transformation (DT) method, several types of rogue waves are constructed. Especially, a unified binary DT is found for this nonlocal DS system, thus the solution formulas for nonlocal DSI and DSII equation can be written in an uniform expression. Dynamics of these rogue waves is separately …
In 2013 a new nonlocal symmetry reduction of the well-known AKNS scattering problem was found; it was shown to give rise to a new nonlocal $PT$ symmetric and integrable Hamiltonian nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. Subsequently, the inverse scattering transform was constructed for the case of rapidly decaying initial data and a family of spatially localized, time periodic one soliton solution were found. In this paper, the inverse scattering transform for the nonlocal NLS equation with nonzero boundary conditions at infinity is presented in the four cases when the data at infinity have con…
