We study the asymptotic behavior of Riemann-Hilbert problems (RHP) arising in the AKNS hierarchy of integrable equations. Our analysis is based on the $\dbar$-steepest descent method. We consider RHPs arising from the inverse scattering transform of the AKNS hierarchy with $H^{1,1}(\R)$ initial data. The analysis will be divided into three regions: fast decay region, oscillating region and self-similarity region (the Painlevé region). The resulting formulas can be directly applied to study the long-time asymptotic of the solutions of integrable equations such as NLS, mKdV and their higher-order generalizations.
In this paper, we mainly focus on the Cauchy problem of an integrable nonlocal Hirota equation with initial value in weighted Sobolev space. Through the spectral analysis of Lax pairs, we successfully transform the Cauchy problem of the nonlocal Hirota equation into a solvable Riemann-Hilbert problem. Furthermore, in the absence of discrete spectrum, the long-time asymptotic behavior of the solution for the nonlocal Hirota equation is obtained through the Dbar steepest descent method. Different from the local Hirota equation, the leading order term on the continuous spectrum and residual error…
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for the modified NLS equation. Using nonlinear steepest descent method and combining the Dbar-analysis, we show that inside any fixed cone, the long time asymptotic behavior of the solution for the modified NLS equation can be characterized with an soliton on discrete spectrum and leading order aasymptotic term on continuous spectrum up to an residual error order O(t^{-3/4}).
We study the Cauchy problem for the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. Using the DBAR generalization of the nonlinear steepest descent method we compute the long time asymptotic expansion of the solution in any fixed space-time cone x_1 + v_1 t <= x <= x_2 + v_2 t with v_1 <= v_2 up to an (optimal) residual error of order O(t^(-3/4)). In each (x,t) cone the leading order term in this expansion is a multi-soliton whose parameters are modulated by soliton-soliton and soliton-radiation interactions as one moves through the cone. Our results only require that the initial data possess o…
The integrable focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation admits soliton solutions whose associated spectral data consist of a single pair of conjugate poles of arbitrary order. We study families of such multiple-pole solitons generated by Darboux transformations as the pole order tends to infinity. We show that in an appropriate scaling, there are four regions in the space-time plane where solutions display qualitatively distinct behaviors: an exponential-decay region, an algebraic-decay region, a non-oscillatory region, and an oscillatory region. Using the nonlinear steepest-descent method for …
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. Using the DBAR generalization of the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou we derive the leading order approximation to the solution of the GP in the solitonic region of space time $|x| < 2t$ for large times and provide bounds for the error which decay as $t \to \infty$ for a general class of initial data whose difference from the non-vanishing background possess's a fixed number of finite moments and derivatives. Using properties of the scattering map for (GP) we derive as a corollary an asymptotic stability …
In this paper, we mainly investigate the long-time asymptotic behavior of the solution for the coupled dispersive AB system with weighted Sobolev initial data, which allows soliton solutions via the Dbar steepest descent method.Based on the spectral analysis of Lax pair, the Cauchy problem of the coupled dispersive AB system is transformed into a Riemann-Hilbert problem, and its existence and uniqueness of the solution is proved by the vanishing lemma. The stationary phase points play an important role in the long-time asymptotic behavior. We demonstrate that in any fixed time cone $\mathcal{C…
We derive the long-time asymptotics for the Toda shock problem using the nonlinear steepest descent analysis for oscillatory Riemann--Hilbert factorization problems. We show that the half plane of space/time variables splits into five main regions: The two regions far outside where the solution is close to free backgrounds. The middle region, where the solution can be asymptotically described by a two band solution, and two regions separating them, where the solution is asymptotically given by a slowly modulated two band solution. In particular, the form of this solution in the separating regi…
In this work, we investigate the long-time asymptotic behavior of the Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa equation with initial data belonging to Schwartz space at infinity by using the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou for the oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problem. Based on the initial value condition, the original Riemann-Hilbert problem is constructed to express the solution of the Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa equation. Through a series of deformations, the original RH problem is transformed into a model RH problem, from which the long-time asymptotic solution of the equation is obtained explici…
We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of solutions of the Korteweg--de Vries equation which are decaying perturbations of a quasi-periodic finite-gap background solution. We compute a nonlinear dispersion relation and show that the $x/t$ plane splits into $g+1$ soliton regions which are interlaced by $g+1$ oscillatory regions, where $g+1$ is the number of spectral gaps. In the soliton regions the solution is asymptotically given by a number of solitons travelling on top of finite-gap solutions which are in the same isospectral class as the backg…
In this paper, we analyze the long-time behavior of the solution of the initial value problem (IVP) for the short pulse (SP) equation. As the SP equation is a complete integrable system, which posses a Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa (WKI)-type Lax pair, we formulate a $2\times 2$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem to this IVP by using the inverse scattering method. Since the spectral variable $k$ is the same order in the WKI-type Lax pair, we construct the solution of this IVP parametrically in the new scale $(y,t)$, whereas the original scale $(x,t)$ is given in terms of functions in the new scale, in ter…
The semiclassical (zero-dispersion) limit of the one-dimensional focusing Nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLS) with decaying potentials is studied in a full scaling neighborhood D of the point of gradient catastrophe (x_0,t_0). This neighborhood contains the region of modulated plane wave (with rapid phase oscillations), as well as the region of fast amplitude oscillations (spikes). In this paper we establish the following universal behaviors of the NLS solutions near the point of gradient catastrophe: i) each spike has the height 3|q_0(x_0,t_0,epsilon)| and uniform shape of the rational brea…
We study the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation with small dispersion and with monotonically increasing initial data using the Riemann-Hilbert (RH) approach. The solution of the Cauchy problem, in the zero dispersion limit, is obtained using the steepest descent method for oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems. The asymptotic solution is completely described by a scalar function $\g$ that satisfies a scalar RH problem and a set of algebraic equations constrained by algebraic inequalities. The scalar function $\g$ is equivalent to the solution of the Lax-Levermore maximizati…
