The Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomials $y_{n}(t)$, which are defined by a second order bilinear differential-difference equation, provide rational solutions of the Toda lattice. They are also polynomial tau-functions for the rational solutions of the second Painlevé equation ($P_{II}$). Here we define two-variable polynomials $Y_{n}(t,h)$ on a lattice with spacing $h$, by considering rational solutions of the discrete time Toda lattice as introduced by Suris. These polynomials are shown to have many properties that are analogous to those of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomials, to which they reduce when $h=0$. They also provide rational solutions for a particular discretisation of $P_{II}$, namely the so called {\it alternate discrete} $P_{II}$, and this connection leads to an expression in terms of the Umemura polynomials for the third Painlevé equation ($P_{III}$). It is shown that Bäcklund transformation for the alternate discrete Painlevé equation is a symplectic map, and the shift in time is also symplectic. Finally we present a Lax pair for the alternate discrete $P_{II}$, which recovers Jimbo and Miwa's Lax pair for $P_{II}$ in the continuum limit $h\to 0$.
The problem of construction of integrable boundary conditions for the discrete Toda chain is considered. The restricted chains for properly chosen closure conditions are reduced to the well known discrete Painlevé equations $dP_{III}$, $dP_{V}$, $dP_{VI}$. Lax representations for these discrete Painlevé equations are found.
We study the topology of the set of singular points (blow-ups) in the solution of the nonperiodic Toda lattice defined on real split semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. The set of blow-ups is called the Painlevé divisor. The isospectral manifold of the Toda lattice is compactified through the companion embedding which maps themanifold to the flag manifold associated with the underlying Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. The Painlevé divisor is then given by the intersections of the compactified manifold with the Bruhat cells in the flag manifold. In this paper, we give explicit description of the to…
In this paper, I construct the Darboux transformations for the non-commutative Toda solutions at $ n=1 $ with the help of linear systems whose compatibility condition yields zero curvature representation of associated systems of non-linear differential equations. I also derive the quasideterminant solutions of the non-commutative Painlevé II equation by taking the Toda solutions at $ n=1 $ as a seed solution in its Darboux transformations. Further by iteration, I generalize the Darboux transformations of the seed solutions to $ N$-th form. At the end I describe the zero curvature representatio…
We present particular solutions of the discrete Painlevé III (d-P$\rm_{III}$) equation of rational and special function (Bessel) type. These solutions allow us to establish a close parallel between this discrete equation and its continuous counterpart. Moreover, we propose an alternate form for d-P$\rm_{III}$ and confirm its integrability by explicitly deriving its Lax pair.
Determinant formulas for the general solutions of the Toda and discrete Toda equations are presented. Application to the $τ$ functions for the Painlevé equations is also discussed.
We consider the Hankel determinant formula of the $τ$ functions of the Toda equation. We present a relationship between the determinant formula and the auxiliary linear problem, which is characterized by a compact formula for the $τ$ functions in the framework of the KP theory. Similar phenomena that have been observed for the Painlevé II and IV equations are recovered. The case of finite lattice is also discussed.
A new direct method of obtaining reductions of the Toda equation is described. We find a canonical and complete class of all possible reductions under certain assumptions. The resulting equations are ordinary differential-difference equations, sometimes referred to as delay-differential equations. The representative equation of this class is hypothesized to be a new version of one of the classical Painlevé equations. The Lax pair associated to this equation is obtained, also by reduction.
Two types of determinant representations of the rational solutions for the Painlevé II equation are discussed by using the bilinear formalism. One of them is a representation by the Devisme polynomials, and another one is a Hankel determinant representation. They are derived from the determinant solutions of the KP hierarchy and Toda lattice, respectively.
The problem of construction of the boundary conditions for the Toda lattice compatible with its higher symmetries is considered. It is demonstrated that this problem is reduced to finding of the differential constraints consistent with the ZS-AKNS hierarchy. A method of their construction is offered based on the Bäcklund transformations. It is shown that the generalized Toda lattices corresponding to the non-exceptional Lie algebras of finite growth can be obtained by imposing one of the four simplest integrable boundary conditions on the both ends of the lattice. This fact allows, in particul…
We present a class of solutions to the discrete Painlevé-II equation for particular values of its parameters. It is shown that these solutions can be expressed in terms of Casorati determinants whose entries are discrete Airy functions. The analogy between the $τ$ function for the discrete P$_{\rm \romanno2}$ and the that of the discrete Toda molecule equation is pointed out.
Critical processes of ideal integrable models of Hele-Shaw flows are considered. A regularization method based on multiscaling expansions of solutions of the KdV and Toda hierarchies characterized by string equations is proposed. Examples are exhibited in which the tritronq'ee solution of the Painleve-I equation turns out to provide the leading term of the regularization
We study explicit formula (suggested by Gamayun, Iorgov, Lisovyy) for Painlevé III($D_8$) $τ$ function in terms of Virasoro conformal blocks with central charge $1$. The Painlevé equation has two types of bilinear forms, we call them Toda-like and Okamoto-like. We obtain these equations from the representation theory using an embedding of a direct sum of two Virasoro algebra in a certain superalgebra. These two types of bilinear forms correspond to Neveu-Schwarz sector and Ramond sector of this algebra. We also obtain $τ$ functions of algebraic solutions of Painlevé III($D_8$) from the special…

Matrix Fourier-like integrals over the classical groups O_+(n), O_-(n), Sp(n) and U(n) are connected with the distribution of the length of the longest increasing sequence in random permutations and random involutions and the spectrum of random matrices. One of the purposes of this paper is to show that all those integrals satisfy the Painlevé V equation with specific initial conditions. In this work, we present both, new results and known ones, in a unified way. Our method consists of inserting one set of time variables t=(t_1,t_2,...) in the integrals for the real compact groups and two sets…
In this paper the relation between the cluster integrable systems and $q$-difference equations is extended beyond the Painlevé case. We consider the class of hyperelliptic curves when the Newton polygons contain only four boundary points. The corresponding cluster integrable Toda systems are presented, and their discrete automorphisms are identified with certain reductions of the Hirota difference equation. We also construct non-autonomous versions of these equations and find that their solutions are expressed in terms of 5d Nekrasov functions with the Chern-Simons contributions, while in the …
Various solutions to the discrete Schwarzian KdV equation are discussed. We first derive the bilinear difference equations of Hirota type of the discrete Schwarzian KP equation, which is decomposed into three discrete two-dimensional Toda lattice equations. We then construct two kinds of solutions in terms of the Casorati determinant. We derive the discrete Schwarzian KdV equation on an inhomogeneous lattice and its solutions by a reduction process. We finally discuss the solutions in terms of the $τ$ functions of some Painlevé systems.
In this paper we use the Riemann-Hilbert problem, with jumps supported on appropriate curves in the complex plane, for matrix biorthogonal polynomials and apply it to find Sylvester systems of differential equations for the orthogonal polynomials and its second kind functions as well. For this aim, Sylvester type differential Pearson equations for the matrix of weights are shown to be instrumental. Several applications are given, in order of increasing complexity. First, a general discussion of non-Abelian Hermite biorthogonal polynomials in the real line, understood as those whose matrix of w…
We extend two of the methods previously introduced to find discrete symmetries of differential equations to the case of difference and differential-difference equations. As an example of the application of the methods, we construct the discrete symmetries of the discrete Painlevé I equation and of the Toda lattice equation.
Using exact results from the theory of completely integrable systems of the Painleve/Toda type, we examine the consequences for the theory of polyelectrolytes in the (nonlinear) Poisson-Boltzmann approximation.
We consider the 2-dimensional Toda lattice tau functions $τ_n(t,s;η,θ)$ deforming the probabilities $τ_n(η,θ)$ that a randomly chosen matrix from the unitary group U(n), for the Haar measure, has no eigenvalues within an arc $(η,θ)$ of the unit circle. We show that these tau functions satisfy a centerless Virasoro algebra of constraints, with a boundary part in the sense of Adler, Shiota and van Moerbeke. As an application, we obtain a new derivation of a differential equation due to Tracy and Widom, satisfied by these probabilities, linking it to the Painleve VI equation.
In this paper we present a brief description of a ladder operator formalism applied to orthogonal polynomials with discontinuous weights. The two coefficient functions, A_n(z) and B_n(z), appearing in the ladder operators satisfy the two fundamental compatibility conditions previously derived for smooth weights. If the weight is a product of an absolutely continuous reference weight w_0 and a standard jump function, then A_n(z) and B_n(z) have apparent simple poles at these jumps. We exemplify the approach by taking w_0 to be the Hermite weight. For this simpler case we derive, without using t…
