A semi-discrete Lax pair formed from the differential system and recurrence relation for semi-classical orthogonal polynomials, leads to a discrete integrable equation for a specific semi-classical orthogonal polynomial weight. The main example we use is a semi-classical Laguerre weight to derive a third order difference equation with a corresponding Lax pair.
In this paper, we study Hankel determinants generated from a perturbed Laguerre weight function, Under the double scaling scheme, we give the uniform asymptotic approximations of Hankel determinants in terms of a solution of a third-order nonlinear differential equation, which is equivalent to a particular Painleve V equation. In fact, this Painleve V equation is equivalent to the general Painleve III equation. The asymptotic approximations of the leading coefficients and the recurrence coefficients for the corresponding orthogonal polynomials also involve the painleve V equation. The asymptot…
The Bures metric and the associated Bures-Hall measure is arguably the best choice for studying the spectrum of the quantum mechanical density matrix with no apriori knowledge of the system. We investigate the probability of a gap in the spectrum of this model, either at the bottom $ [0,s) $ or at the top $ (s,1] $, utilising the connection of this Pfaffian point-process with the allied problem in the determinantal point-process of the two-dimensional Cauchy-Laguerre bi-orthogonal polynomial system, now deformed with two variables $s,t$. To this end we develop new general results about Cauchy …
The complete lists of vector hyperbolic equations on the sphere that have integrable third order vector isotropic and anisotropic symmetries are presented. Several new integrable hyperbolic vector models are found. By their integrability we mean the existence of vector Backlund transformations depending on a parameter. For all new equations such transformations are constructed.
We perform a classification of third order integrable systems of evolution equations with respect to higher symmetries. Applying it, we consider polynomial systems that are 0-homogeneous under a suitable weighting of variables with main matrix $***$ having a seventh-order symmetry. A new integrable equation is discovered. For this new supersymmetric equation the Lax representation and bi-Hamiltonian structures are given.
We present a systematic construction of integrable third order systems based on the coupling of an integrable second order equation and a Riccati equation. This approach is the extension of the Gambier method that led to the equation that bears his name. Our study is carried through for both continuous and discrete systems. In both cases the investigation is based on the study of the singularities of the system (the Painlevé method for ODE's and the singularity confinement method for mappings).
The examples are considered of integrable hyperbolic equations of third order with two independent variables. In particular, an equation is found which admits as evolutionary symmetries the Krichever--Novikov equation and the modified Landau--Lifshitz system. The problem of choice of dynamical variables for the hyperbolic equations is discussed.
We construct a family of integrable equations of the form $v_t=f(v,v_x,v_{xx},v_{xxx})$ such that $f$ is a transcendental function in $v,v_x,v_{xx}$. This family is related to the Krichever-Novikov equation by a differential substitution. Our construction of integrable equations and the corresponding differential substitutions involves geometry of a family of genus two curves and their Jacobians.
We consider $u_t=u^α u_{xxx}+n(u)u_xu_{xx}+m(u)u_x^3+ r(u)u_{xx} +p(u)u_x^2 + q(u)u_x+s(u)$ with $α=0$ and $α=3$, for those functional forms of $m, n, p, q, r, s$ for which the equation is integrable in the sense of an infinite number of Lie-Bäcklund symmetries. Local $x$- and $t$-independent recursion operators that generate these infinite sets of symmetries are obtained for the equations. A combination of potential forms, hodograph transformations and $x$-generalised hodograph transformations are applied to the obtained equations.
A list of forty third-order exactly integrable two-field evolutionary systems is presented. Differential substitutions connecting various systems from the list are found. It is proved that all the systems can be obtained from only two of them. Examples of zero curvature representations with $4 \times 4$ matrices are presented.
We show that the third-order difference equations proposed by Hirota, Kimura and Yahagi are generated by a pair of second-order difference equations. In some cases, the pair of the second-order equations are equivalent to the Quispel-Robert-Thomson(QRT) system, but in the other cases, they are irrelevant to the QRT system. We also discuss an ultradiscretization of the equations.
Two-component second and third-order Burgers type systems with nondiagonal constant matrix of leading order terms are classified for higher symmetries. New symmetry integrable systems with their master symmetries are obtained. Some third order systems are observed to possess conservation laws. Bi-Poisson structures of systems possessing conservation laws are given.
We show that the integrable subclassess of a class of third order non-autonomous equations are identical with the integrable subclassess of the autonomous ones.
Special solutions to five autonomous integrable partial difference equations via the third and sixth Painlevé equations and the Garnier system in two variables
A complete list of nonlinear one-field hyperbolic equations having generalized integrable x- and y-symmetries of the third order is presented. The list includes both sin-Gordon type equations and equations linearizable by differential substitutions.
In the spirit of Klein's Erlangen Program, we investigate the geometric and algebraic structure of fundamental line complexes and the underlying privileged discrete integrable system for the minors of a matrix which constitute associated Plücker coordinates. Particular emphasis is put on the restriction to Lie circle geometry which is intimately related to the master dCKP equation of discrete integrable systems theory. The geometric interpretation, construction and integrability of fundamental line complexes in Möbius, Laguerre and hyperbolic geometry are discussed in detail. In the process, w…
We show that the new third-order complex nonlinear wave equation, introduced recently by Müller-Hoissen [arXiv:2202.04512], does not pass the Painlevé test for integrability. We find two reductions of this equation, one integrable and one non-integrable, whose solutions jointly cover all solutions of the original equation.
Nonlocal symmetries for exactly integrable two-field evolutionary systems of the third order have been computed. Differentiation of the nonlocal symmetries with respect to spatial variable gives a few nonevolutionary systems for each evolutionary system. Zero curvature representations for some new nonevolution systems are presented.
We classify integrable third order equations in 2+1 dimensions which generalize the examples of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili, Veselov-Novikov and Harry Dym equations. Our approach is based on the observation that dispersionless limits of integrable systems in 2+1 dimensions possess infinitely many multi-phase solutions coming from the so-called hydrodynamic reductions. %Conversely, the requirement of the existence of hydrodynamic reductions proves to be an efficient classification criterion. In this paper we adopt a novel perturbative approach to the classification problem. Based on the method of hy…
We discuss a family of integrable systems on the sphere $S^2$ with an additional integral of third order in momenta. This family contains the Coryachev-Chaplygin top, the Goryachev system, the system recently discovered by Dullin and Matveev and two new integrable systems. On the non-physical sphere with zero radius all these systems are isomorphic to each other.
A novel family of integrable third order maps is presented. Each map possesses, by construction, a pair of rational invariants and a commuting map from the same class. The 3-dimensional invariant curve is parametrized, in general, by an elliptic curve.
We have derived a family of equations related to the untwisted affine Lie algebras $A^{(1)}_{r}$ using a Coxeter $\mathbb{Z}_{r+1}$ reduction. They represent the third member of the hierarchy of soliton equations related to the algebra. We also give some particular examples and impose additional reductions.
We first reformulate and expand with several novel findings some of the basic results in the integrability of Abel equations. Next, these results are applied to Vein's Abel equation whose solutions are expressed in terms of the third order hyperbolic functions and a phase space analysis of the corresponding nonlinear oscillator is also provided
We present here the explicit parametric solutions of second order differential equations invariant under time translation and rescaling and third order differential equations invariant under time translation and the two homogeneity symmetries. The computation of first integrals gives in the most general case, the parametric form of the general solution. For some polynomial functions we obtain a time parametrisation quadrature which can be solved in terms of ``known'' functions.
We present an algebraic formulation of the notion of integrability of dynamical systems, based on a nilpotency property of its flow: it can be explicitly described as a polynomial on its evolution parameter. Such a property is established in a purely geometric--algebraic language, in terms both of the algebra of all higher-order constants of the motion (named the nilpotent algebra of the dynamics), and of a maximal Abelian algebra of symmetries (called a Cartan subalgebra of the dynamics). It is shown that this notion of integrability amounts to the annihilator of the nilpotent algebra being c…
There are two fundamental problems studied by the theory of hamiltonian integrable systems: integration of equations of motion, and construction of action-angle variables. The third problem, however, should be added to the list: separation of variables. Though much simpler than two others, it has important relations to the quantum integrability. Separation of variables is constructed for the $SL(3)$ magnetic chain --- an example of integrable model associated to a nonhyperelliptic algebraic curve.
We find a transformation which relates a new third-order integrable nonlinear evolution equation, introduced recently by Qiao, with the well-known modified Korteweg - de Vries equation. Then we use this transformation to derive smooth soliton solutions of the new equation from the known rational and soliton solutions of the old one.
V.V. Sokolov's modifying symmetry approach is applied to anisotropic evolution equations of the third order on the n-dimensional sphere. The main result is a complete classification of such equations. Auto-Bäcklund transformations are also found for all equations.
The first part of the book is devoted to the symmetry approach to classification of scalar integrable evolution PDEs with two independent variables. In the second part systems of evolution equations with polynomial homogeneous right-hand side are considered. Such systems are associated with associative algebras and, more generally, with non-associative algebraic structures, whose structural constants are defined by the coefficients of the system under consideration. We explore which structures correspond to polynomial integrable models. Integrable systems polynomial in derivatives are describe…
A general form of the fifth-order nonlinear evolution equation is considered. Helmholtz solution of the inverse variational problem is used to derive conditions under which this equation admits an analytic representation. A Lennard type recursion operator is then employed to construct a hierarchy of Lagrangian equations. It is explicitly demonstrated that the constructed system of equations has a Lax representation and two compatible Hamiltonian structures. The homogeneous balance method is used to derive analytic soliton solutions of the third- and fifth-order equations.
We consider five-point differential-difference equations. Our aim is to find integrable modifications of the Ito-Narita-Bogoyavlensky equation related to it by non-invertible discrete transformations. We enumerate all modifications associated to transformations of the first, second and third orders. As far as we know, such a classification problem is solved for the first time in the discrete case. We analyze transformations obtained to specify their nature. A number of new integrable five-point equations and new transformations have been found. Moreover, we have derived one new completely disc…
We exhibit a relationship between the massless $a_2^{(2)}$ integrable quantum field theory and a certain third-order ordinary differential equation, thereby extending a recent result connecting the massless sine-Gordon model to the Schrödinger equation. This forms part of a more general correspondence involving $A_2$-related Bethe ansatz systems and third-order differential equations. A non-linear integral equation for the generalised spectral problem is derived, and some numerical checks are performed. Duality properties are discussed, and a simple variant of the nonlinear equation is suggest…
In this paper we classify Weingarten surfaces integrable in the sense of soliton theory. The criterion is that the associated Gauss equation possesses an sl(2)-valued zero curvature representation with a nonremovable parameter. Under certain restrictions on the jet order, the answer is given by a third order ordinary differential equation to govern the functional dependence of the principal curvatures. Employing the scaling and translation (offsetting) symmetry, we give a general solution of the governing equation in terms of elliptic integrals. We show that the instances when the elliptic int…
We consider evolutionary equations of the form $u_t=F(u, w)$ where $w=D_x^{-1}D_yu$ is the nonlocality, and the right hand side $F$ is polynomial in the derivatives of $u$ and $w$. The recent paper \cite{FMN} provides a complete list of integrable third order equations of this kind. Here we extend the classification to fifth order equations. Besides the known examples of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP), Veselov-Novikov (VN) and Harry Dym (HD) equations, as well as fifth order analogues and modifications thereof, our list contains a number of equations which are apparently new. We conjecture that o…

We prove an integrability criterion of order 3 for a homogeneous potential of degree -1 in the plane. Still, this criterion depends on some integer and it is impossible to apply it directly except for families of potentials whose eigenvalues are bounded. To address this issue, we use holonomic and asymptotic computations with error control of this criterion and apply it to the potential of the form V(r,θ)=r^{-1} h(\exp(iθ)) with h a polynomial of degree less than 3. We find then all meromorphically integrable potentials of this form.
Nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger-type equation is derived as a model to describe paraxial light propagation in nonlinear media with different `degrees' of nonlocality. High frequency limit of this equation is studied under specific assumptions of Cole-Cole dispersion law and a slow dependence along propagating direction. Phase equations are integrable and they correspond to dispersionless limit of Veselov-Novikov hierarchy. Analysis of compatibility among intensity law (dependence of intensity on the refractive index) and high frequency limit of Poynting vector conservation law reveals the exis…
Rediscovered by a systematic search, a forgotten class of integrable surfaces is shown to disprove the Finkel-Wu conjecture. The associated integrable nonlinear partial differential equation $$ z_{yy} + (1/z)_{xx} + 2 = 0 $$ possesses a zero curvature representation, a third-order symmetry, and a nonlocal transformation to the sine-Gordon equation $ϕ_{ξη} = \sinϕ$. We leave open the problem of finding a Backlund autotransformation and a recursion operator that would produce a local hierarchy.
In this paper, we study the properties of a nonlinearly dispersive integrable system of fifth order and its associated hierarchy. We describe a Lax representation for such a system which leads to two infinite series of conserved charges and two hierarchies of equations that share the same conserved charges. We construct two compatible Hamiltonian structures as well as their Casimir functionals. One of the structures has a single Casimir functional while the other has two. This allows us to extend the flows into negative order and clarifies the meaning of two different hierarchies of positive f…
As the third stage of the project multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, we present, in the framework of 'discrete quantum mechanics' with pure imaginary shifts in one dimension, the multi-indexed Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. They are obtained from the original Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials by multiple application of the discrete analogue of the Darboux transformations or the Crum-Krein-Adler deletion of 'virtual state solutions' of type I and II, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre, Jacobi and (q-)Racah polynomials reported earlier.
It is shown that the kinematic equations governing steady motions of an ideal fibre-reinforced fluid in a curved stratum may be expressed entirely in terms of the intrinsic Gauss equation, which assumes the form of a partial differential equation of third order, for the surface representing the stratum. In particular, the approach adopted here leads to natural non-classical orthogonal coordinate systems on surfaces of constant Gaussian curvature with one family of coordinate lines representing the fibres. Integrable cases are isolated by requiring that the Gauss equation be compatible with ano…
The tetrahedron equation is a three-dimensional generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation. Its solutions define integrable three-dimensional lattice models of statistical mechanics and quantum field theory. Their integrability is not related to the size of the lattice, therefore the same solution of the tetrahedron equation defines different integrable models for different finite periodic cubic lattices. Obviously, any such three-dimensional model can be viewed as a two-dimensional integrable model on a square lattice, where the additional third dimension is treated as an internal degree of f…
A transformation is derived which takes Lorenz integrable system into the well-known Euler equations of a free-torque rigid body with a fixed point, i.e. the famous motion à la Poinsot. The proof is based on Lie group analysis applied to two third order ordinary differential equations admitting the same two-dimensional Lie symmetry algebra. Lie's classification of two-dimensional symmetry algebra in the plane is used. If the same transformation is applied to Lorenz system with any value of parameters, then one obtains Euler equations of a rigid body with a fixed point subjected to a torsion de…
We consider a one-parameter family of third order nonlinear recurrence relations. Each member of this family satisfies the singularity confinement test, has a conserved quantity, and moreover has the Laurent property: all of the iterates are Laurent polynomials in the initial data. However, we show that these recurrences are not Diophantine integrable according to the definition proposed by Halburd. Explicit bounds on the asymptotic growth of the heights of iterates are obtained for a special choice of initial data. As a by-product of our analysis, infinitely many solutions are found for a cer…
We unearth the interconnection between various analytical methods which are widely used in the current literature to identify integrable nonlinear dynamical systems described by third-order nonlinear ordinary differentiable equations (ODEs). We establish an important interconnection between extended Prelle-Singer procedure and λ-symmetries approach applicable to third-order ODEs to bring out the various linkages associated with these different techniques. By establishing this interconnection we demonstrate that given any one of the quantities as a starting point in the family consisting of Jac…
In this paper, we present a method of deriving extended Prelle-Singer method's quantifiers from Darboux Polynomials for third-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. By knowing the Darboux polynomials and its cofactors, we extract the extended Prelle-Singer method's quantities without evaluating the Prelle-Singer method's determining equations. We consider three different cases of known Darboux polynomials. In the first case, we prove the integrability of the given third-order nonlinear equation by utilizing the Prelle-Singer method's quantifiers from the two known Darboux polynomials…
Elastic (stretching) flows of null curves are studied in three-dimensional Minkowski space. As a main tool, a natural type of moving frame for null curves is introduced, without use of the pseudo-arclength. This new frame is related to a Frenet null frame by a gauge transformation that belongs to the little group contained in the Lorentz group $SO(2,1)$ and provides an analog of the Hasimoto transformation (relating a parallel frame to a Frenet frame for curves in Euclidean space). The Cartan structure equations of the transformed frame are shown to encode a hereditary recursion operator givin…
A class of multi-component integrable systems associated to Novikov algebras, which interpolate between KdV and Camassa-Holm type equations, is obtained. The construction is based on the classification of low-dimensional Novikov algebras by Bai and Meng. These multi-component bi-Hamiltonian systems obtained by this construction may be interpreted as Euler equations on the centrally extended Lie algebras associated to the Novikov algebras. The related bilinear forms generating cocycles of first, second and third order are classified. Several examples, including known integrable equations, are p…
We consider systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of the form ${\cal B}{\mathbf K}=0$, where $\cal B$ is a Hamiltonian operator of a completely integrable partial differential equation (PDE) hierarchy, and ${\mathbf K}=(K,L)^T$. Such systems, whilst of quite low order and linear in the components of $\mathbf K$, may represent higher-order nonlinear systems if we make a choice of $\mathbf K$ in terms of the coefficient functions of $\cal B$. Indeed, our original motivation for the study of such systems was their appearance in the study of Painlevé hierarchies, where the question of …
In this paper, we investigate the anomalous dispersive relations, inverse scattering transform with a Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problem, and fractional multi-solitons of the integrable combined fractional higher-order mKdV (fhmKdV) hierarchy, including the fractional mKdV (fmKdV), fractional fifth-order mKdV (f5mKdV), fractional combined third-fifth-order mKdV (f35mKdV) equations, etc., which can be featured via completeness of squared scalar eigenfunctions of the ZS spectral problem. We construct a matrix RH problem to present three types of fractional N-solitons illustrating anomalous dispersions…
