We study classical chaotic motions in the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model. For this purpose, it is convenient to focus upon a reduced system composed of two-coupled anharmonic oscillators by supposing an ansatz. We examine three ansätze: 1) two pulsating fuzzy spheres, 2) a single Coulomb-type potential, and 3) integrable fuzzy spheres. For the first two cases, we show the existence of chaos by computing Poincaré sections and a Lyapunov spectrum. The third case leads to an integrable system. As a result, the BMN matrix model is not integrable in the sense of Liouville, though there may be some integrable subsectors.
We obtain the Matrix model equations in the background of the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave solution of the 11D supergravity and discuss its relation with the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) model.
Several reductions of the bosonic BMN matrix model equations to ordinary point particle Hamiltonian dynamics in the plane (or R^3) are given - as well as a few explicit solutions (some of which, as N->infinity, correspond to membranes rotating with constant angular velocity, others to higher dimensional objects).
We test a conjecture by Maldacena and Milekhin for the ungauged version of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model by lattice Monte Carlo simulation. The numerical results reproduce the perturbative and gravity results in the limit of large and small flux parameter, respectively, and are consistent with the conjecture.
In this thesis we provide the results obtained through lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the bosonic BMN and the bosonic BFSS matrix models. The simulations are performed using Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) algorithm. The BMN matrix model is expected to have a Hagedorn/deconfinement type phase transition as the temperature is varied in the system. The Polyakov loop is used as an order parameter for detecting the phase transition. Besides the Polyakov loop, other prime observables such as the internal energy and the extent of space were also computed. We also check the validity of numerical simulat…
We explore the 1/2 BPS configurations in BMN matrix theory with SO(3) angular momentum of $SO(3)\times SO(6)$ symmetry. The fluctuation analysis of the BPS configurations near the abelian solutions and also the fuzzy two sphere vacua reveals how nonabelian BPS configurations emerge. Especially the irreducible nonabelian configurations seem to have the maximal angular momentum of order $N^3$, beyond which they collapse to abelian ones. We also find some new BPS configurations explicitly.
We develop a systematic procedure for deriving canonical string field theory from large N matrix models in the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase limit. The approach, based on collective field theory, provides a generalization of standard string field theory.
We compute the full one-loop 2-particle S-matrix for excitations of the type IIB AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) BMN string. The S-matrix is found to respect the expected symmetries and the phases are consistent with the crossing equations. By analyzing how the relevant integrals scale with the IR regulator we show that scattering of massless bosons is trivial at two loops. Based on our results we argue that the additional su(2) S-matrix appearing in the massless sector in the exact solution should trivialize.
We explore the stability of a recently found class of spinning dielectric M2-branes in the 11-dimensional maximally supersymmetric plane-wave background. We find two small windows of instabilities in the dipole (j=1) and quadrupole (j = 2) sector of linear multipole perturbations.
We investigate the large-N limit of the BMN matrix model by analyzing the dynamics of ellipsoidal M2-branes that spin in the 11-dimensional maximally supersymmetric SO(3)xSO(6) plane-wave background. We identify finite-energy solutions by specifying the local minima of the corresponding energy functional. These configurations are static in SO(3) due to the Myers effect and rotate in SO(6) with an angular momentum that is bounded from above. As a first step towards studying their chaotic properties, we evaluate the Lyapunov exponents of their radial fluctuations.
We construct the black hole geometry dual to the deconfined phase of the BMN matrix model at strong 't Hooft coupling. We approach this solution from the limit of large temperature where it is approximately that of the non-extremal D0-brane geometry with a spherical $S^8$ horizon. This geometry preserves the $SO(9)$ symmetry of the matrix model trivial vacuum. As the temperature decreases the horizon becomes deformed and breaks the $SO(9)$ to the $SO(6)\times SO(3)$ symmetry of the matrix model. When the black hole free energy crosses zero the system undergoes a phase transition to the confine…
We discuss the continuum limits of Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase matrix model. They give rise to Poisson bracket gauge field theories on the ordinary two sphere or on a set of two spheres with a gauge groups U(n) depending on the degeneracy of the classical solution about which the model is considered. We show that these models fail to be equivalent among each other in the continuum limit.
We study the leading (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) stability of multipole perturbations for a static dielectric M2-brane with spherical topology in the 11-dimensional maximally supersymmetric plane-wave background. We observe a cascade of instabilities that originates from the dipole (j=1) and quadrupole (j=2) sectors (the only unstable sectors of the LO) and propagates towards all the multipoles of the NLO.
We study the thermal phase transition of the bosonic BMN model which is a mass deformed version of the bosonic part of the BFSS model. Our results connect the massless region of the phase diagram described by the bosonic BFSS model with the large-mass region, where the model is analytically solvable. We observe that at finite value of the matrix size $N$, the critical region is smeared over a small temperature range. The model has a single critical temperature, which arises as the large $N$ limit of two apparent transitions at finite $N$. We emphasise the vital role played by finite $N$ correc…
We study the bosonic part of the BMN matrix model for wide ranges of temperatures, values of the deformation parameter, and numbers of colors $16 \leq N \leq 48$. Using lattice computations, we analyze phase transitions in the model, observing a single first-order transition from a uniform to a gapped phase for all values of the deformation parameter. We study the functional form of the dependence of the critical temperature on the deformation parameter, to describe how our results smoothly interpolate between the limits of the bosonic BFSS model and the gauged Gaussian model.
We extract from gauge theoretical calculations the matrix elements of the SYM dilatation operator. By the BMN correspondence this should coincide with the 3-string vertex of light cone string field theory in the pp-wave background. We find a mild but important discrepancy with the SFT results. If the modified $O(g_2)$ matrix elements are used, the $O(g_2^2)$ anomalous dimensions are exactly reproduced without the need for a contact interaction in the single string sector.
We propose type IIA supergravity solutions dual to the 1/2 BPS vacua of the BMN matrix model. These dual solutions are analyzed using the Polchinski-Strassler method and have brane configurations of concentric shells of D2 branes (or NS5 branes) with various radii and D0 charge. These branes can be viewed as polarized from $N$ D0 branes by a transverse R-R magnetic 6-form flux and an NS-NS 3-form flux. In the region far from branes, the solutions reduce to perturbation around the near horizon geometry of $N$ D0 branes, by turning on these R-R and NS-NS fluxes, which are dual to the deformation…
In the context of the Penrose/BMN limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we consider four-impurity BMN operators in Yang-Mills theory, and demonstrate explicitly their correspondence to four-oscillator states in string theory. Using the dilatation operator on the gauge-theory side of the correspondence, we calculate matrix elements between four-impurity states. Since conformal dimensions of gauge-theory operators correspond to light-cone energies of string states, these matrix elements may be compared with the string-theory light-cone Hamiltonian matrix elements calculated in the plane-wave back…
We study the confining/deconfining phase transition in the mass deformed Yang-Mills matrix model which is obtained by the dimensional reduction of the bosonic sector of the four-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory compactified on the three sphere, i.e. the bosonic BMN model. The $1/D$ (with $D$ the number of matrices) expansion suggests that the model may have two closely separated transitions. However, using a second order lattice formulation of the model we find that for the small value of the mass parameter, $μ=2$, those two apparent critical temperatures merge at large $…
We review recent results of emergent geometries in the BMN matrix model, a one-dimensional gauge theory considered as a non-perturbative formulation of M-theory on the plane-wave geometry. A key to understand the emergent geometries is the eigenvalue distribution of a BPS operator. Gauge-theory calculation shows that the BPS operator reproduces the corresponding supergravity solutions in the gauge/gravity duality and also brane geometries in the M-brane picture. At finite temperatures, these geometries should be realised in a non-trivial way. Monte Carlo simulations of this gauge theory reveal…
The mixings between BMN operators with two scalar impurities and those with a scalar fermion pair are discussed to the lowest order at planar level. For this purpose, matrix model effective vertices are calculated to O(g^3). All the mixing patterns are explicitly obtained.
We study the maximally supersymmetric plane wave matrix model (the BMN model) at finite temperature, $T$, and locate the high temperature phase boundary in the $(μ,T)$ plane, where $μ$ is the mass parameter. We find the first transition, as the system is cooled from high temperatures, is from an approximately $SO(9)$ symmetric phase to one where three matrices expand to form fuzzy spheres. For $μ> 3.0$ there is a second distinct transition at a lower temperature. The two transitions approach one another at smaller $μ$ and merge in the vicinity of $μ=3.0$. The resulting single transition curve …
The goal of this paper is to study the BMN correspondence in the fermionic sector. On the field theory side, we compute matrix elements of the dilatation operator in N=4 Super Yang-Mills for BMN operators containing two fermion impurities. Our calculations are performed up to and including O(lambda') in the 't Hooft coupling and O(g_2) in the Yang-Mills genus counting parameter. On the string theory side, we compute the corresponding matrix elements of the interacting string Hamiltonian in string field theory, using the three-string interaction vertex constructed by Spradlin and Volovich (and …
We study SU(N) plane-wave matrix theory up to fourth perturbative order in its large N planar limit. The effective Hamiltonian in the closed su(2) subsector of the model is explicitly computed through a specially tailored computer program to perform large scale distributed symbolic algebra and generation of planar graphs. The number of graphs here was in the deep billions. The outcome of our computation establishes the four-loop integrability of the planar plane-wave matrix model. To elucidate the integrable structure we apply the recent technology of the perturbative asymptotic Bethe Ansatz t…

BMN Matrix theory admits vacua in the shape of large spherical membranes. Per- turbing around such vacua, the setup provides for a controlled computational frame- work for testing information evolution in Matrix black holes. The theory realizes excitations in the supergravity multiplet as qubits. These qubits are coupled to matrix degrees of freedom that describe deformations of the spherical shape of the membrane. Arranging the ripples on the membrane into a heat bath, we use the qubit system as a probe and compute the associated Feynman-Vernon density matrix at one loop order. This allows us…
The large N spectrum of the quantum mechanical hamiltonian of two hermitean matrices in a harmonic potential is studied in a framework where one of the matrices is treated exactly and the other is treated as a creation operator impurity in the background of the first matrix. For the free case, the complete set of invariant eigenstates and corresponding energies are obtained. When g_{YM}^2 interactions are added, it is shown that the full string tension corrected spectrum of BMN loops is obtained.

We calculate the two-loop correction to the dispersion relation for worldsheet modes of the BMN string in AdS(n) x S(n) x T(10-2n) for n=2,3,5. For the massive modes the result agrees with the exact dispersion relation derived from symmetry considerations with no correction to the interpolating function h. For the massless modes in AdS(3) x S(3) x T(4) however our result does not match what one expects from the corresponding symmetry based analysis. We also derive the S-matrix for massless modes up to the one-loop order. The scattering phase is given by the massless limit of the Hernandez-Lope…
We study a quantum corrected SO(6) invariant matrix quantum mechanics obtained from the s-wave modes of the scalars of N = 4 SYM on S^3. For commuting matrices, this model is believed to describe the 1/8 BPS states of the full SYM theory. In the large N limit the ground state corresponds to a distribution of eigenvalues on a S^5 which we identify with the sphere on the dual geometry AdS_5x S^5. We then consider non-BPS excitations by studying matrix perturbations where the off-diagonal modes are treated perturbatively. To a first approximation, these modes can be described by a free theory of …
This paper concerns instanton contributions to two-point correlation functions of BMN operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills that vanish in planar perturbation theory. Two-point functions of operators with even numbers of fermionic impurities (dual to RR string states) and with purely scalar impurities (dual to NSNS string states) are considered. This includes mixed RR - NSNS two-point functions. The gauge theory correlation functions are shown to respect BMN scaling and their behaviour is found to be in good agreement with the corresponding D-instanton contributions to two-point amplitude…

The role of general two-impurity multi-trace operators in the BMN correspondence is explored. Surprisingly, the anomalous dimensions of all two-impurity multi-trace BMN operators to order g_2^2λ' are completely determined in terms of single-trace anomalous dimensions. This is due to suppression of connected field theory diagrams in the BMN limit and this fact has important implications for some string theory processes on the PP-wave background. We also make gauge theory predictions for the matrix elements of the light-cone string field theory Hamiltonian in the two string-two string and one st…
We explore the connection between the process of relaxation in the BMN matrix model and the physics of black holes in AdS/CFT. Focusing on Dyson-fluid solutions of the matrix model, we perform numerical simulations of the real time dynamics of the system. By quenching the equilibrium distribution we study the quasi-normal oscillations of scalar single trace observables, we isolate the lowest quasi-normal mode, and we determine its frequencies as function of the energy. Considering the BMN matrix model as a truncation of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, we also compute the frequencies of the quasi-normal m…
We investigate the type IIA AdS(3) x S(3) x M(4) superstring with M(4)=S(3) x S(1) or M(4)=T(4). String theory in this background is interesting because of AdS3/CFT2 and its newly discovered integrable structures. We derive the kappa symmetry gauge-fixed Green-Schwarz string action to quadratic order in fermions and quartic order in fields utilizing a near BMN expansion. As a first consistency check of our results we show that the two point functions are one-loop finite in dimensional regularization. We then perform a Hamiltonian analysis where we compare the energy of string states with the p…
We study a spherical antimembrane in the eleven dimensional pp wave. In this background, a single antimembrane breaks all the supersymmetries because its dipole is misaligned with the background flux. Using the BMN matrix theory we compute the one-loop potential for the antimembrane. Then we put the antimembrane in the field produced by a source spherical membrane and compute the velocity-dependent part of the interaction between them on both the supergravity side and the BMN matrix theory side. Despite the aforementioned nonsupersymmetry of the antimembrane, it is found that the results on th…
We test the gauge/gravity duality between the matrix model and type IIA string theory at low temperatures with unprecedented accuracy. To this end, we perform lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model, which is the one-parameter deformation of the Banks-Fischler-Shenker-Susskind (BFSS) matrix model, taking both the large $N$ and continuum limits. We leverage the fact that sufficiently small flux parameters in the BMN matrix model have a negligible impact on the energy of the system while stabilizing the flat directions so that simulations at smaller…
We present a novel framework for simulating matrix models on a quantum computer. Supersymmetric matrix models have natural applications to superstring/M-theory and gravitational physics, in an appropriate limit of parameters. Furthermore, for certain states in the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model, several supersymmetric quantum field theories dual to superstring/M-theory can be realized on a quantum device. Our prescription consists of four steps: regularization of the Hilbert space, adiabatic state preparation, simulation of real-time dynamics, and measurements. Regularization …
We investigate the integrable structures in an N=2 superconfomal Sp(N) Yang-Mills theory with matter, which is dual to an open+closed string system. We restrict ourselves to the BMN operators that correspond to free string states. In the closed string sector, an integrable structure is inherited from its parent theory, N=4 SYM. For the open string sector, the planar one-loop mixing matrix for gauge invariant holomorphic operators is identified with the Hamiltonian of an integrable SU(3) open spin chain. Using the K-matrix formalism we identify the integrable open-chain boundary conditions that…
We propose the existence of a new universality in classical chaotic systems when the number of degrees of freedom is large: the statistical property of the Lyapunov spectrum is described by Random Matrix Theory. We demonstrate it by studying the finite-time Lyapunov exponents of the matrix model of a stringy black hole and the mass deformed models. The massless limit, which has a dual string theory interpretation, is special in that the universal behavior can be seen already at t=0, while in other cases it sets in at late time. The same pattern is demonstrated also in the product of random mat…
The BMN Matrix model can be regarded as a theory of coincident M-theory gravitons, which expand by Myers dielectric effect into the 2-sphere and 5-sphere giant graviton vacua of the theory. In this note we show that, in the same fashion, Matrix String theory in Type IIA pp-wave backgrounds arises from the action for coincident Type IIA gravitons. In Type IIB, we show that the action for coincident gravitons in the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background gives rise to a Matrix model which supports fuzzy 3-sphere giant graviton vacua with the right behavior in the classical limit. We discuss…
We study classical solutions in Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model. A supersymmetric (1/2 BPS) fuzzy sphere is one of the classical solutions and corresponds to a giant graviton. We also consider other classical solutions, such as non-supersymmetric fuzzy sphere and harmonic oscillating gravitons. Some properties of oscillating gravitons are discussed. In particular, oscillating gravitons turn into usual supergravitons in the limit mu -> 0. Moreover, we calculate the one-loop effective action around the supersymmetric fuzzy sphere by the use of the background field method and show…
The standard prescription for computing Wilson loops in the AdS/CFT correspondence in the large coupling regime and tree-level involves minimizing the string action. In many cases the action has more than one saddle point as in the simple example studied in this paper, where there are two 1/4 BPS string solutions, one a minimum and the other not. Like in the case of the regular circular loop the perturbative expansion seems to be captured by a free matrix model. This gives enough analytic control to extrapolate from weak to strong coupling and find both saddle points in the asymptotic expansio…
A number of studies have shown that chaos occurs in scattering: the outgoing deflection angle is seen to be an erratic function of the impact parameter. We propose to extend this to quantum field theory, and to use erratic behavior of the many-particle $S$-matrix as a probe of chaos.
We investigate circuit complexity to characterize chaos in multiparticle quantum systems. In the process, we take a stride to analyze open quantum systems by using complexity. We propose a new diagnostic of quantum chaos from complexity based on the reduced density matrix by exploring different types of quantum circuits. Through explicit calculations on a toy model of two coupled harmonic oscillators, where one or both of the oscillators are inverted, we demonstrate that the evolution of complexity is a possible diagnostic of chaos.
Classical dynamics in SU(2) Matrix theory is investigated. A classical chaos-order transition is found. For the angular momentum small enough (even for small coupling constant) the system exhibits a chaotic behavior, for angular momentum large enough the system is regular.
We study the quantum mechanics of BMN operators with two scalar impurities and arbitrarily many traces, at one loop and all genus. We prove an operator identity which partially elucidates the structure of this quantum mechanics, provides some support for a conjectured formula for the free all genus two-point functions, and demonstrates that a single O(g_2^2) contact term arises in the Hamiltonian as a result of transforming from the natural gauge theory basis to the string basis. We propose to identify the S-matrix of this quantum mechanics with the S-matrix of string theory in the plane-wave …
We compute the massive-sector worldsheet S-matrix for superstring theories in AdS(n) x S(n) x T(10-2n) (with n=2,3,5) in the near BMN expansion up to one-loop order in inverse string tension. We show that, after taking into account the wave function renormalization, the one-loop S-matrix is UV finite. In an appropriate regularization scheme the S-matrix is consistent with the underlying symmetries of the superstring theory, i.e. for the n=3,5 cases it coincides with the one implied by the light-cone gauge symmetries with the dressing phases determined from the crossing equations. For the n=2,3…
