A number of studies have shown that chaos occurs in scattering: the outgoing deflection angle is seen to be an erratic function of the impact parameter. We propose to extend this to quantum field theory, and to use erratic behavior of the many-particle $S$-matrix as a probe of chaos.
We investigate circuit complexity to characterize chaos in multiparticle quantum systems. In the process, we take a stride to analyze open quantum systems by using complexity. We propose a new diagnostic of quantum chaos from complexity based on the reduced density matrix by exploring different types of quantum circuits. Through explicit calculations on a toy model of two coupled harmonic oscillators, where one or both of the oscillators are inverted, we demonstrate that the evolution of complexity is a possible diagnostic of chaos.
Classical dynamics in SU(2) Matrix theory is investigated. A classical chaos-order transition is found. For the angular momentum small enough (even for small coupling constant) the system exhibits a chaotic behavior, for angular momentum large enough the system is regular.
Chaotic scattering is a manifestation of transient chaos realized by the scattering with non-integrable potential. When the initial position is taken in the potential, a particle initially exhibits chaotic motion, but escapes outside after a certain period of time. The time to stay inside the potential can be seen as lifetime and this escape process may be regarded as a kind of instability. The process of this type exists in the Banks-Fischler-Shenker-Susskind (BFSS) matrix model in which the potential has flat directions. We discuss this chaotic instability by reducing the system with an ansa…
We propose a possible resolution for the problem of why the semicircular law is not observed, whilst the random matrix hypothesis describes well the fluctuation of energy spectra. We show in the random 2-matrix model that the interactions between the quantum subsystems alter the semicircular law of level density. We consider also other types of interactions in the chain- and star-multimatrix models. The connection with the Calogero-Sutherland models is briefly discussed.
Recent work by Shenker, Stanford, and Kitaev has related the black hole horizon geometry to chaotic behavior. We extend this from eternal black holes to black holes that form and then evaporate. This leads to an identity for the change in the black hole S-matrix (over times shorter than the scrambling time) due an addition infalling particle, elaborating an idea of 't Hooft.
We propose the existence of a new universality in classical chaotic systems when the number of degrees of freedom is large: the statistical property of the Lyapunov spectrum is described by Random Matrix Theory. We demonstrate it by studying the finite-time Lyapunov exponents of the matrix model of a stringy black hole and the mass deformed models. The massless limit, which has a dual string theory interpretation, is special in that the universal behavior can be seen already at t=0, while in other cases it sets in at late time. The same pattern is demonstrated also in the product of random mat…
In this article, using the principles of Random Matrix Theory (RMT), we give a measure of quantum chaos by quantifying Spectral From Factor (SFF) appearing from the computation of two-point Out of Time Order Correlation function (OTOC) expressed in terms of square of the commutator bracket of quantum operators which are separated in time. We also provide a strict model independent bound on the measure of quantum chaos, $-1/N(1-1/π)\leq {\bf SFF}\leq 0$ and $0\leq {\bf SFF}\leq 1/πN$, valid for thermal systems with a large and small number of degrees of freedom respectively. Based on the approp…
Decoherence in quantum systems which are classically chaotic is studied. It is well-known that a classically chaotic system when quantized loses many prominent chaotic traits. We show that interaction of the quantum system with an environment can under general circumstances quickly diminish quantum coherence and reenact some characteristic classical chaotic behavior. We use the Feynman-Vernon influence functional formalism to study the effect of an ohmic environment at high temperature on two classically-chaotic systems: The linear Arnold cat map (QCM) and the nonlinear quantum kicked rotor (Q…
We use random matrix theory to explore late-time chaos in supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems. Motivated by the recent study of supersymmetric SYK models and their random matrix classification, we consider the Wishart-Laguerre unitary ensemble and compute the spectral form factors and frame potentials to quantify chaos and randomness. Compared to the Gaussian ensembles, we observe the absence of a dip regime in the form factor and a slower approach to Haar-random dynamics. We find agreement between our random matrix analysis and predictions from the supersymmetric SYK model, and discuss …
We study the effects of addition of Chern-Simons (CS) term in the minimal Yang Mills (YM) matrix model composed of two $2 \times 2$ matrices with $SU(2)$ gauge and $SO(2)$ global symmetry. We obtain the Hamiltonian of this system in appropriate coordinates and demonstrate that its dynamics is sensitive to the values of both the CS coupling, $κ$, and the conserved conjugate momentum, $p_ϕ$, associated to the $SO(2)$ symmetry. We examine the behavior of the emerging chaotic dynamics by computing the Lyapunov exponents and plotting the Poincaré sections as these two parameters are varied and, in …
It is believed that thermalization drives the reduced density matrix of a subsystem to approach a short-range entangled operator. If the initial state is also short-range entangled, it is possible that the reduced density matrix remains low-entangled throughout thermalization; or there could exist a barrier with high operator entanglement between the initial and thermalized reduced density matrix. In this paper, we study such dynamics in three classes of models: the rational CFTs, the random unitary circuit, and the holographic CFTs, representing systems of increasing quantum chaoticity. We sh…
Random matrix theory (RMT) provides a common mathematical formulation of distinct physical questions in three different areas: quantum chaos, the 1-d integrable model with the $1/r^2$ interaction (the Calogero-Sutherland-Moser system), and 2-d quantum gravity. We review the connection of RMT with these areas. We also discuss the method of loop equations for determining correlation functions in RMT, and smoothed global eigenvalue correlators in the 2-matrix model for gaussian orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles.
We study the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) in chaotic conformal field theories (CFTs) of arbitrary dimensions. Assuming local ETH, we compute the reduced density matrix of a ball-shaped subsystem of finite size in the infinite volume limit when the full system is an energy eigenstate. This reduced density matrix is close in trace distance to a density matrix, to which we refer as the ETH density matrix, that is independent of all the details of an eigenstate except its energy and charges under global symmetries. In two dimensions, the ETH density matrix is universal for all theori…
We focus on an $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills gauge theory in $0+1$-dimensions with the same matrix content as the bosonic part of the BFSS matrix model, but with mass deformation terms breaking the global $SO(9)$ symmetry of the latter to $SO(5) \times SO(3) \times {\mathbb Z}_2$. Introducing an ansatz configuration involving fuzzy four and two spheres with collective time dependence, we examine the chaotic dynamics in a family of effective Lagrangians obtained by tracing over the aforementioned ansatz configurations at the matrix levels $N = \frac{1}{6}(n+1)(n+2)(n+3)$, for $n=1,2,\cdots\,,7$. Through n…
Chaos criterion for quantum field theory is proposed. Its correspondence with classical chaos criterion in semi-classical regime is shown. It is demonstrated for real scalar field that proposed chaos criterion can be used to investigate stability of classical solutions of field equations.
We study the chaotic behaviour and the quantum-classical correspondence for the baker's map. Correspondence between quantum and classical expectation values is investigated and it is numerically shown that it is lost at the logarithmic timescale. The quantum chaos degree is computed and it is demonstrated that it describes the chaotic features of the model. The correspondence between classical and quantum chaos degrees is considered.
Entropy production in quantum (field) systems requiring environment-induced decoherence is described in a Gaussian variational approximation. The new phenomenon of Semiquantum Chaos is reported. (Presented at the International Conference on Nonlinear Dynamics, Chaotic and Complex Systems, Zakopane (Poland), 7-12.11.95.)
We briefly review the well known connection between classical chaos and classical statistical mechanics, and the recently discovered connection between quantum chaos and quantum statistical mechanics.
We address the problem of quantum chaos: Is there a rigorous, physically meaningful definition of chaos in quantum physics? Can the tools of classical chaos theory, like Lyapunov exponents, Poincaré sections etc. be carried over to quantum systems? Can quantitative predictions be made? We show that the recently proposed quantum action is well suited to answer those questions. As an example we study chaotic behavior of the 2-D anharmonic oscillator and compare classical with quantum chaos. Moreover, we study quantum chaos as function of temperature (the classical system can be considered as the…
We study chaos in the classical limit of the matrix quantum mechanical system describing D0-brane dynamics. We determine a precise value of the largest Lyapunov exponent, and, with less precision, calculate the entire spectrum of Lyapunov exponents. We verify that these approach a smooth limit as $N \rightarrow \infty$. We show that a classical analog of scrambling occurs with fast scrambling scaling, $t_* \sim \log S$. These results confirm the k-locality property of matrix mechanics discussed by Sekino and Susskind.
