We study the chaotic behaviour and the quantum-classical correspondence for the baker's map. Correspondence between quantum and classical expectation values is investigated and it is numerically shown that it is lost at the logarithmic timescale. The quantum chaos degree is computed and it is demonstrated that it describes the chaotic features of the model. The correspondence between classical and quantum chaos degrees is considered.
Because of a formal equivalence with the partition function of an Ising chain, the semiclassical traces of the quantum baker map can be calculated using the transfer-matrix method. We analyze the transfer matrices associated with the baker map and the symmetry-reflected baker map (the latter happens to be unitary but the former is not). In both cases simple quantum-circuit representations are obtained, which exhibit the typical structure of qubit quantum bakers. In the case of the baker map it is shown that nonunitarity is restricted to a one-qubit operator (close to a Hadamard gate for some p…
Quantum baker`s map is a model of chaotic system. We study quantum dynamics for the quantum baker's map. We use the Schack and Caves symbolic description of the quantum baker`s map. We find an exact expression for the expectation value of the time dependent position operator. A relation between quantum and classical trajectories is investigated. Breakdown of the quantum-classical correspondence at the logarithmic timescale is rigorously established.
Classical chaotic systems are distinguished by their sensitive dependence on initial conditions. The absence of this property in quantum systems has lead to a number of proposals for perturbation-based characterizations of quantum chaos, including linear growth of entropy, exponential decay of fidelity, and hypersensitivity to perturbation. All of these accurately predict chaos in the classical limit, but it is not clear that they behave the same far from the classical realm. We investigate the dynamics of a family of quantizations of the baker's map, which range from a highly entangling unita…
We show that the quantum baker's map, a prototypical map invented for theoretical studies of quantum chaos, has a very simple realization in terms of quantum gates. Chaos in the quantum baker's map could be investigated experimentally on a quantum computer based on only 3 qubits.
This paper reports on the experimental implementation of the quantum baker's map via a three bit nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum information processor. The experiments tested the sensitivity of the quantum chaotic map to perturbations. In the first experiment, the map was iterated forward and then backwards to provide benchmarks for intrinsic errors and decoherence. In the second set of experiments, the least significant qubit was perturbed in between the iterations to test the sensitivity of the quantum chaotic map to applied perturbations. These experiments are used to investigate p…
We present a broad family of quantum baker maps that generalize the proposal of Schack and Caves to any even Hilbert space with arbitrary boundary conditions. We identify a structure, common to all maps consisting of a simple kernel perturbed by diffraction effects. This "essential" baker's map has a different semiclassical limit and can be diagonalized analytically for Hilbert spaces spanned by qubits. In all cases this kernel provides an accurate approximation to the spectral properties - eigenvalues and eigenfunctions - of all the different quantizations.
The modular multiplication operator, a central subroutine in Shor's factoring algorithm, is shown to be a coherent superposition of two quantum bakers maps when the multiplier is 2. The classical limit of the maps being completely chaotic, it is shown that there exist perturbations that push the modular multiplication operator into regimes of generic quantum chaos with spectral fluctuations that are those of random matrices. For the initial state of relevance to Shor's algorithm we study fidelity decay due to phase and bit-flip errors in a single qubit and show exponential decay with shoulders…
Hypersensitivity to perturbation is a criterion for chaos based on the question of how much information about a perturbing environment is needed to keep the entropy of a Hamiltonian system from increasing. We demonstrate numerically that hypersensitivity to perturbation is present in the following quantum maps: the quantum kicked top, the quantum baker's map, the quantum lazy baker's map, and the quantum sawtooth and cat maps.
The characteristic stretching and squeezing of chaotic motion is linearized within the finite number of phase space domains which subdivide a classical baker map. Tensor products of such maps are also chaotic, but a more interesting generalized baker map arises if the stacking orders for the factor maps are allowed to interact. These maps are readily quantized, in such a way that the stacking interaction is entirely attributed to primary qubits in each map, if each subsystem has power-of-two Hilbert space dimension. We here study the particular example of two baker maps that interact via a con…
It is pointed out that an exactly solvable permutation operator, viewed as the quantization of cyclic shifts, is useful in constructing a basis in which to study the quantum baker's map, a paradigm system of quantum chaos. In the basis of this operator the eigenfunctions of the quantum baker's map are compressed by factors of around five or more. We show explicitly its connection to an operator that is closely related to the usual quantum baker's map. This permutation operator has interesting connections to the art of shuffling cards as well as to the quantum factoring algorithm of Shor via th…
For chaotic classical systems, the distribution of return times to a small region of phase space is universal. We propose a simple tool to investigate multiple returns in quantum systems. Numerical evidence for the baker map and kicked top points, also in the quantum case, at a universal distribution.
While plenty of results have been obtained for single-particle quantum systems with chaotic dynamics through a semiclassical theory, much less is known about quantum chaos in the many-body setting. We contribute to recent efforts to make a semiclassical analysis of many-body systems feasible. This is nontrivial due to both the enormous density of states and the exponential proliferation of periodic orbits with the number of particles. As a model system we study kicked interacting spin chains employing semiclassical methods supplemented by a newly developed duality approach. We show that for th…
The out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) is a measure of quantum chaos that is being vigorously investigated. Analytically accessible simple models that have long been studied in other contexts could provide insights into such measures. This paper investigates the OTOC in the quantum bakers map which is the quantum version of a simple and exactly solvable model of deterministic chaos that caricatures the action of kneading dough. Exact solutions based on the semiquantum approximation are derived that tracks very well the correlators till the Ehrenfest time. The growth occurs at the exponentia…
By numerically simulating an implementation of the quantum baker's map on a 3-qubit NMR quantum computer based on the molecule trichloroethylene, we demonstrate the feasibility of quantum chaos experiments on present-day quantum computers. We give detailed descriptions of proposed experiments that investigate (a) the rate of entropy increase due to decoherence and (b) the phenomenon of hypersensitivity to perturbation.
We define a class of dynamical systems on the sphere analogous to the baker map on the torus. The classical maps are characterized by dynamical entropy equal to ln 2. We construct and investigate a family of the corresponding quantum maps. In the simplest case of the model the system does not possess a time reversal symmetry and the quantum map is represented by real, orthogonal matrices of even dimension. The semiclassical ensemble of quantum maps, obtained by averaging over a range of matrix sizes, displays statistical properties characteristic of circular unitary ensemble. Time evolution of…
We show that the coarse-grained quantum baker's map exhibits a linear entropy increase at an asymptotic rate given by the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of the classical chaotic baker's map. The starting point of our analysis is a symbolic representation of the map on a string of $N$ qubits, i.e., an $N$-bit register of a quantum computer. To coarse-grain the quantum evolution, we make use of the decoherent histories formalism. As a byproduct, we show that the condition of medium decoherence holds asymptotically for the coarse-grained quantum baker's map.
We derive a prediction of dynamical tunneling rates from regular to chaotic phase-space regions combining the direct regular-to-chaotic tunneling mechanism in the quantum regime with an improved resonance-assisted tunneling theory in the semiclassical regime. We give a qualitative recipe for identifying the relevance of nonlinear resonances in a given $\hbar$-regime. For systems with one or multiple dominant resonances we find excellent agreement to numerics.
We rationalize the somewhat surprising efficacy of the Hadamard transform in simplifying the eigenstates of the quantum baker's map, a paradigmatic model of quantum chaos. This allows us to construct closely related, but new, transforms that do significantly better, thus nearly solving for many states of the quantum baker's map. These new transforms, which combine the standard Fourier and Hadamard transforms in an interesting manner, are constructed from eigenvectors of the shift permutation operator that are also simultaneous eigenvectors of bit-flip (parity) and possess bit-reversal (time-re…
A set of quantum states, dynamically related to the classical periodic orbits of a chaotic map, is used as a basis in which the description of the eigenstates of its quantum version is greatly simplified. This set can be improved with the inclusion of short time propagation along the stable and unstable manifolds of the periodic orbits resulting in a construction similar to the scar functions of Vergini (Jour. Phys. A \textbf{33}, (2000) 4709). The average participation ratio is used to quantify the quality of the basis.
A semiclassical method to determine if the classical limit of a quantum system is chaotic or not, based on Pesin theorem, is presented. The method is applied to a phenomenological Gamow--type model and it is concluded that its classical limit is chaotic.
An initial coherent state is propagated exactly by a kicked quantum Hamiltonian and its associated classical stroboscopic map. The classical trajectories within the initial state are regular for low kicking strengths, then bifurcate and become mainly chaotic as the kicking parameter is increased. Time-evolution is tracked using classical, quantum and semiclassical Wigner functions, obtained via the Herman-Kluk propagator. Quantitative comparisons are also included and carried out from probability marginals and autocorrelation functions. Sub-Planckian classical structure such as small stability…
An analysis of the semiclassical regime of the quantum-classical transition is given for open, bounded, one dimensional chaotic dynamical systems. Environmental fluctuations -- characteristic of all realistic dynamical systems -- suppress the development of fine structure in classical phase space and damp nonlocal contributions to the semiclassical Wigner function which would otherwise invalidate the approximation. This dual regularization of the singular nature of the semiclassical limit is demonstrated by a numerical investigation of the chaotic Duffing oscillator.
Despite considerable progress during the last decades in devising a semiclassical theory for classically chaotic quantum systems a quantitative semiclassical understanding of their dynamics at late times (beyond the so-called Heisenberg time $T_H$) is still missing. This challenge, corresponding to resolving spectral structures on energy scales below the mean level spacing, is intimately related to the quest for semiclassically restoring quantum unitarity, which is reflected in real-valued spectral determinants. Guided through insights for quantum graphs we devise a periodic-orbit resummation …
We investigate how classical predictability of the coarse-grained evolution of the quantum baker's map depends on the character of the coarse-graining. Our analysis extends earlier work by Brun and Hartle [Phys. Rev. D 60, 123503 (1999)] to the case of a chaotic map. To quantify predictability, we compare the rate of entropy increase for a family of coarse-grainings in the decoherent histories formalism. We find that the rate of entropy increase is dominated by the number of scales characterising the coarse-graining.
A semiclassical approximation for the matrix elements of a quantum chaotic propagator in the scar function basis has been derived. The obtained expression is solely expressed in terms of canonical invariant objects. For our purpose, we have used, the recently developed, semiclassical matrix elements of the propagator in coherent states, together with the linearization of the flux in the neighborhood of a classically unstable periodic orbit of chaotic two dimensional systems. The expression here derived is successfully verified to be exact for a (linear) cat map, after the theory is adapted to …
The out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC), recently analyzed in several physical contexts, is studied for low-dimensional chaotic systems through semiclassical expansions and numerical simulations. The semiclassical expansion for the OTOC yields a leading-order contribution in $\hbar^2$ that is exponentially increasing with time within an intermediate, temperature-dependent, time-window. The growth-rate in such a regime is governed by the Lyapunov exponent of the underlying classical system and scales with the square-root of the temperature.
Quantum chaos of many-body systems has been swiftly developing into a vibrant research area at the interface between various disciplines, ranging from statistical physics to condensed matter to quantum information and to cosmology. In quantum systems with a classical limit, advanced semiclassical methods provide the crucial link between classically chaotic dynamics and corresponding universal features at the quantum level. Recently, single-particle techniques dealing with ergodic wave interference in the usual semiclassical limit $\hbar \rightarrow 0$ have begun to be transformed into the fiel…
We numerically investigated the entanglement product in the simplest coupled kicked top model with the spin $j=1$. Different from the dynamical pattern of entanglement in the semiclassical regime, two similar initial states may have discordant entanglement oscillations. A candidate of the quantum signature of this classical chaotic system was proposed. The potential antimonotonic relation between the rank correlation coefficient qualifying the concordant of two entanglement evolutions and the stationary entanglement was preliminarily revealed.
A way of construction of semiclassical wave function (SWF) based on the Maslov - Fedoriuk approach is proposed which appears to be appropriate also for systems with chaotic classical limits. Some classical constructions called skeletons are considered. The skeletons are generalizations of Arnolds' tori able to gather chaotic dynamics. SWF's are continued by caustic singularities in the configuration space rather then in the phase space using complex time method. The skeleton formulation provides us with a new algorithm for the semiclassical approximation method which is applied to construct SW…
Energy level statistics of quantized chaotic systems have been evaluated in the semiclassical limit via their periodic orbits using the Gutzwiller and related trace formulae. Here we evaluate a spectral statistic of chaotic 4-regular quantum graphs from their periodic orbits without the semiclassical limit. The variance of the n-th coefficient of the characteristic polynomial is determined by the sizes of the sets of distinct primitive periodic orbits with n bonds which have no self-intersections, and the sizes of the sets with a given number of self-intersections which all consist of two sect…

Using semiclassical methods, it is possible to construct very accurate approximations in the short wavelength limit of quantum dynamics that rely exclusively on classical dynamical input. For systems whose classical realization is strongly chaotic, there is an exceedingly short logarithmic Ehrenfest time scale, beyond which the quantum and classical dynamics of a system necessarily diverge, and yet the semiclassical construction remains valid far beyond that time. This fact leads to a paradox if one ponders the reversibility and predictability properties of quantum and classical mechanics. The…
We study the resonance (or Gamow) eigenstates of open chaotic systems in the semiclassical limit, distinguishing between left and right eigenstates of the non-unitary quantum propagator, and also between short-lived and long-lived states. The long-lived left (right) eigenstates are shown to concentrate as $\hbar\to 0$ on the forward (backward) trapped set of the classical dynamics. The limit of a sequence of eigenstates $\{ψ(\hbar)\}_{\hbar\to 0}$ is found to exhibit a remarkably rich structure in phase space that depends on the corresponding limiting decay rate. These results are illustrated …
Measurement choices in weakly-measured open quantum systems can affect quantum trajectory chaos. We consider this scenario semi-classically and show that measurement acts as nonlinear generalized fluctuation and dissipation forces. These can alter effective dissipation in the quantum spread variables and hence change the dynamics, such that measurement choices on the coupled quantum dynamics can enhance quantum effects and make the dynamics chaotic, for example. This analysis explains the measurement-dependence of quantum chaos at a variety of parameter settings, and in particular we demonstra…
We address frequency-dependent quantum transport through mesoscopic conductors in the semiclassical limit. By generalizing the trajectory-based semiclassical theory of dc quantum transport to the ac case, we derive the average screened conductance as well as ac weak-localization corrections for chaotic conductors. Thereby we confirm respective random matrix results and generalize them by accounting for Ehrenfest time effects. We consider the case of a cavity connected through many leads to a macroscopic circuit which contains ac-sources. In addition to the reservoir the cavity itself is capaci…
Work in closed quantum systems is usually defined by a two-point measurement. This definition of work is compatible with quantum fluctuation theorems but it fundamentally differs from its classical counterpart. In this paper, we study the correspondence principle in quantum chaotic systems. We derive a semiclassical expression of the work distribution for chaotic systems undergoing a general, finite time, process. This semiclassical distribution converges to the classical distribution in the usual classical limit. We show numerically that, for a particle inside a chaotic cavity, the semiclassi…
We study relevant features of the spectrum of the quantum open baker map. The opening consists of a cut along the momentum $p$ direction of the 2-torus phase space, modelling an open chaotic cavity. We study briefly the classical forward trapped set and analyze the corresponding quantum nonunitary evolution operator. The distribution of eigenvalues depends strongly on the location of the escape region with respect to the central discontinuity of this map. This introduces new ingredients to the association among the classical escape and quantum decay rates. Finally, we could verify that the val…
It is widely recognized that entanglement generation and dynamical chaos are intimately related in semiclassical models via the process of decoherence. In this work, we propose a unifying framework which directly connects the bipartite and multipartite entanglement growth to the quantifiers of classical and quantum chaos. In the semiclassical regime, the dynamics of the von Neumann entanglement entropy, the spin squeezing, the quantum Fisher information and the out-of-time-order square commutator are governed by the divergence of nearby phase-space trajectories via the local Lyapunov spectrum,…
Classically integrable approximants are here constructed for a family of predominantly chaotic periodic systems by means of the Baker-Hausdorff-Campbell formula. We compare the evolving wave density for the corresponding exact quantum systems using semiclassical approximations based alternatively on the chaotic and on the integrable trajectories. It is found that the latter reproduce the quantum oscillations and provide superior approximations even when the initial coherent state is placed in a broad chaotic region. Time regimes are then accessed in which the propagation based on the system's …
The connection of a superconductor to a chaotic ballistic quantum dot leads to interesting phenomena, most notably the appearance of a hard gap in its excitation spectrum. Here we treat such an Andreev billiard semiclassically where the density of states is expressed in terms of the classical trajectories of electrons (and holes) that leave and return to the superconductor. We show how classical orbit correlations lead to the formation of the hard gap, as predicted by random matrix theory in the limit of negligible Ehrenfest time $\tE$, and how the influence of a finite $\tE$ causes the gap to…
We consider the quantum evolution of classically chaotic systems in contact with surroundings. Based on $\hbar$-scaling of an equation for time evolution of the Wigner's quasi-probability distribution function in presence of dissipation and thermal diffusion we derive a semiclassical equation for quantum fluctuations. This identifies an early regime of evolution dominated by fluctuations in the curvature of the potential due to classical chaos and dissipation. A stochastic treatment of this classical fluctuations leads us to a Fokker-Planck equation which is reminiscent of Kramers' equation fo…
We present a semiclassical approach to eigenfunction statistics in chaotic and weakly disordered quantum systems which goes beyond Random Matrix Theory, supersymmetry techniques, and existing semiclassical methods. The approach is based on a generalization of Berry's Random Wave Model, combined with a consistent semiclassical representation of spatial two-point correlations. We derive closed expressions for arbitrary wavefunction averages in terms of universal coefficients and sums over classical paths, which contain, besides the supersymmetry results, novel oscillatory contributions. Their ph…
We study the quantum dissipative Duffing oscillator across a range of system sizes and environmental couplings under varying semiclassical approximations. Using spatial (based on Kullback-Leibler distances between phase-space attractors) and temporal (Lyapunov exponent-based) complexity metrics, we isolate the effect of the environment on quantum-classical differences. Moreover, we quantify the system sizes where quantum dynamics cannot be simulated using semiclassical or noise-added classical approximations. Remarkably, we find that a parametrically invariant meta-attractor emerges at a speci…
We examine the conjecture that entropy production in subsystems of a given system can be used as a dynamical criterion for quantum chaos in the latter. Numerical results are presented for finite dimensional spin systems as also for the quantum baker's map. Of especial importance is the power spectrum of the entropy production which gets progressively more and more broad-banded as the degree of correlation in the Hamiltonian matrix is made to decrease.
The work distribution is a fundamental quantity in nonequilibrium thermodynamics mainly due to its connection with fluctuations theorems. Here we develop a semiclassical approximation to the work distribution for a quench process in chaotic systems. The approach is based on the dephasing representation of the quantum Loschmidt echo and on the quantum ergodic conjecture, which states that the Wigner function of a typical eigenstate of a classically chaotic Hamiltonian is equidistributed on the energy shell. We show that our semiclassical approximation is accurate in describing the quantum distr…
The fidelity amplitude is a quantity of paramount importance in echo type experiments. We use semiclassical theory to study the average fidelity amplitude for quantum chaotic systems under external perturbation. We explain analytically two extreme cases: the random dynamics limit --attained approximately by strongly chaotic systems-- and the random perturbation limit, which shows a Lyapunov decay. Numerical simulations help us bridge the gap between both extreme cases.
Given a quantum Hamiltonian, we explain how the dynamical properties of the underlying classical system affect the behaviour of quantum eigenstates in the semi-classical limit. We study this problem via the notion of semiclassical measures. We mostly focus on two opposite dynamical paradigms: completely integrable systems and chaotic ones. We recall standard tools from microlocal analysis and from dynamical systems. We show how to use them in order to illustrate the classical-quantum correspondance and to compare properties of completely integrable and chaotic systems.
We elucidate the basic physical mechanisms responsible for the quantum-classical transition in one-dimensional, bounded chaotic systems subject to unconditioned environmental interactions. We show that such a transition occurs due to the dual role of noise in regularizing the semiclassical Wigner function and averaging over fine structures in classical phase space. The results are interpreted in the novel context of applying recent advances in the theory of measurement and open systems to the semiclassical quantum regime. We use these methods to show how a local semiclassical picture is stabil…
We investigate the tunneling process between two symmetric stable islands of a forced pendulum Hamiltonian in the weak chaos regime. We show that when the tunneling doublet is quantized over a classical non-linear resonance the tunneling rate strongly deviates from the semiclassical prediction. This mechanism is responsible for the irregular dependence of the tunneling rate on the system parameters. The weak-chaos condition allows us to make a theoretical prediction which agrees very well with the numerical results. This opens up a possible avenue to a general theory on the dependence of quant…
While a wealth of results has been obtained for chaos in single-particle quantum systems, much less is known about chaos in quantum many-body systems. We contribute to recent efforts to make a semiclassical analysis of such systems feasible, which is nontrivial due to the exponential proliferation of orbits with increasing particle number. Employing a recently discovered duality relation, we focus on the collective, coherent motion that together with the also present incoherent one typically leads to a mixture of regular and chaotic dynamics. We investigate a kicked spin chain as an example of…
A measure describing the chaos of a dynamics was introduced by two complexities in information dynamics, and it is called the chaos degree. In particular, the entropic chaos degree has been used to characterized several dynamical maps such that logistis, Baker's, Tinckerbel's in classical or quantum systems. In this paper, we give a new treatment of quantum chaos by defining the entropic chaos degree for quantum transition dynamics, and we prove that every non-chaotic quantum dynamics, e.g., dissipative dynamics, has zero chaos degree. A quantum spin 1/2 system is studied by our chaos degree, …
We have studied two complementary decoherence measures purity and fidelity for a generic diffusive noise in two different chaotic systems (the baker and the cat maps). For both quantities, we have found classical structures in quantum mechanics - the scar functions - that are specially stable when subjected to environmental perturbations. We show that these quantum states constructed on classical invariants are the most robust significant quantum distributions in generic dissipative maps.
In a recent Phys. Rev. E Rapid Communication, the authors, Silvestrov and Beenakker, introduce a way to lengthen the Ehrenfest time, $τ$, for fully chaotic systems. We disagree with several statements made in their paper, and address the following points essential to their conclusions: 1) it is not true that all semiclassical approximations for chaotic systems fail at a so-called `logtime', $τ\propto - \ln (\hbar)$, differing only by a numerical coefficient; and 2) the limitation of the semiclassical approximation as expressed in the authors' Eq. (8) is not limited by their argument leading to…
