A periodic orbit basis for the Quantum Baker Map

A set of quantum states, dynamically related to the classical periodic orbits of a chaotic map, is used as a basis in which the description of the eigenstates of its quantum version is greatly simplified. This set can be improved with the inclusion of short time propagation along the stable and unstable manifolds of the periodic orbits resulting in a construction similar to the scar functions of Vergini (Jour. Phys. A \textbf{33}, (2000) 4709). The average participation ratio is used to quantify the quality of the basis.

Periodic orbit action correlations in the Baker map

Periodic orbit action correlations are studied for the piecewise linear, area-preserving Baker map. Semiclassical periodic orbit formulae together with universal spectral statistics in the corresponding quantum Baker map suggest the existence of universal periodic orbit correlations. The calculation of periodic orbit sums for the Baker map can be performed with the help of a Perron-Frobenius type operator. Shuffling cards, factoring numbers, and the quantum baker's map

It is pointed out that an exactly solvable permutation operator, viewed as the quantization of cyclic shifts, is useful in constructing a basis in which to study the quantum baker's map, a paradigm system of quantum chaos. The Approach to Ergodicity in the Quantum Baker's Map

We study the quantum mechanics of a generalized version of the baker's map. We show that the Ruelle resonances (which govern the approach to ergodicity of classical distributions on phase space) also appear in the quantum correlation functions of observables at different times, and hence control the statistical variance of matrix elements of observables (in the basis of eigenstates of the quantum time evolution operator). We illustrate this with numerical results.

Boundary contributions to the semiclassical traces of the baker's map

We evaluate the leading asymptotic contributions to the traces of the quantum baker's map propagator. Besides the usual Gutzwiller periodic orbit contribution, we identify boundary paths giving rise to anomalous log(hbar) terms. Some examples of these anomalous terms are calculated both numerically and analytically.

The twisted baker map

As a model to provide a hands-on, elementary understanding of "vortex dynamics", we introduce a piecewise linear non-invertible map called a twisted baker map. We show that the set of hyperbolic repelling periodic points with complex conjugate eigenvalues and that without complex conjugate eigenvalues are simultaneously dense in the phase space. We also show that these two sets equidistribute with respect to the normalized Lebesgue measure, in spite of a non-uniformity in their Lyapunov exponents.

Crossover from Diffusive to Ballistic Transport in Periodic Quantum Maps

We derive an expression for the mean square displacement of a particle whose motion is governed by a uniform, periodic, quantum multi-baker map. The expression is a function of both time, $t$, and Planck's constant, $\hbar$, and allows a study of both the long time, $t\to\infty$, and semi-classical, $\hbar\to 0$, limits taken in either order. Different Traces of Quantum Systems Having the Same Classical Limit

Many quantum systems may have the same classical limit. We argue that in the classical limit their traces do not necessarily converge one to another. The trace formula allows to express quantum traces by means of classical quantities as sums over periodic orbits of the classical system. To explain the lack of convergence of the traces we need the quantum corrections to the classical actions of periodic orbits. Quantum chaotic resonances from short periodic orbits

We present an approach to calculating the quantum resonances and resonance wave functions of chaotic scattering systems, based on the construction of states localized on classical periodic orbits and adapted to the dynamics. Multifractal eigenstates of quantum chaos and the Thue-Morse sequence

We analyze certain eigenstates of the quantum baker's map and demonstrate, using the Walsh-Hadamard transform, the emergence of the ubiquitous Thue-Morse sequence, a simple sequence that is at the border between quasi-periodicity and chaos, and hence is a good paradigm for quantum chaotic states. We show a family of states that are also simply related to Thue-Morse sequence, and are strongly scarred by short periodic orbits and their homoclinic excursions. We give approximate expressions for these states and provide evidence that these and other generic states are multifractal.

Clustering of periodic orbits and ensembles of truncated unitary matrices

Periodic orbits in chaotic systems form clusters, whose elements traverse approximately the same points of the phase space. The distribution of cluster sizes depends on the length n of orbits and the parameter p which controls closeness of orbits actions. We show that counting of cluster sizes in the baker's map can be turned into a spectral problem for an ensemble of truncated unitary matrices. Accuracy of Trace Formulas

Using quantum maps we study the accuracy of semiclassical trace formulas. The role of chaos in improving the semiclassical accuracy, in some systems, is demonstrated quantitatively. However, our study of the standard map cautions that this may not be most general. Phase space localization of chaotic eigenstates: Violating ergodicity

The correlation between level velocities and eigenfunction intensities provides a new way of exploring phase space localization in quantized non-integrable systems. It can also serve as a measure of deviations from ergodicity due to quantum effects for typical observables. Action Correlations and Random Matrix Theory

The correlations in the spectra of quantum systems are intimately related to correlations which are of genuine classical origin, and which appear in the spectra of actions of the classical periodic orbits of the corresponding classical systems. Neighborhoods of periodic orbits and the stationary distribution of a noisy chaotic system

The finest state space resolution that can be achieved in a physical dynamical system is limited by the presence of noise. In the weak-noise approximation the neighborhoods of deterministic periodic orbits can be computed as distributions stationary under the action of a local Fokker-Planck operator and its adjoint.
