A complete classification of the perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of length 15 as well as their extensions of length 16 is presented. There are 5983 such inequivalent perfect codes and 2165 extended perfect codes. Efficient generation of these codes relies on the recent classification of Steiner quadruple systems of order 16. Utilizing a result of Blackmore, the optimal binary one-error-correcting codes of length 14 and the (15, 1024, 4) codes are also classified; there are 38408 and 5983 such codes, respectively.
Motivated by applications to DNA-storage, flash memory, and magnetic recording, we study perfect burst-correcting codes for the limited-magnitude error channel. These codes are lattices that tile the integer grid with the appropriate error ball. We construct two classes of such perfect codes correcting a single burst of length $2$ for $(1,0)$-limited-magnitude errors, both for cyclic and non-cyclic bursts. We also present a generic construction that requires a primitive element in a finite field with specific properties. We then show that in various parameter regimes such primitive elements ex…
The doubly shortened perfect codes of length 13 are classified utilizing the classification of perfect codes in [P.R.J. Östergård and O. Pottonen, The perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of length 15: Part I - Classification, IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, to appear]; there are 117821 such (13,512,3) codes. By applying a switching operation to those codes, two more (13,512,3) codes are obtained, which are then not doubly shortened perfect codes.
We generalize Helberg's number-theoretic construction of multiple insertion-deletion correcting binary codes to non-binary alphabets and describe a linear decoding algorithm for correcting multiple deletions.
A complete classification of the perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of length 15 as well as their extensions of length 16 was recently carried out in [P. R. J. Östergård and O. Pottonen, "The perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of length 15: Part I--Classification," IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory vol. 55, pp. 4657--4660, 2009]. In the current accompanying work, the classified codes are studied in great detail, and their main properties are tabulated. The results include the fact that 33 of the 80 Steiner triple systems of order 15 occur in such codes. Further understanding is gained o…
We first give a construction of binary $t_1$-deletion-$t_2$-insertion-burst correcting codes with redundancy at most $\log(n)+(t_1-t_2-1)\log\log(n)+O(1)$, where $t_1\ge 2t_2$. Then we give an improved construction of binary codes capable of correcting a burst of $4$ non-consecutive deletions, whose redundancy is reduced from $7\log(n)+2\log\log(n)+O(1)$ to $4\log(n)+6\log\log(n)+O(1)$. Lastly, by connecting non-binary $b$-burst-deletion correcting codes with binary $2b$-deletion-$b$-insertion-burst correcting codes, we give a new construction of non-binary $b$-burst-deletion correcting codes …
One peculiarity with deletion-correcting codes is that perfect $t$-deletion-correcting codes of the same length over the same alphabet can have different numbers of codewords, because the balls of radius $t$ with respect to the Levenshte\uın distance may be of different sizes. There is interest, therefore, in determining all possible sizes of a perfect $t$-deletion-correcting code, given the length $n$ and the alphabet size~$q$. In this paper, we determine completely the spectrum of possible sizes for perfect $q$-ary 1-deletion-correcting codes of length three for all $q$, and perfect $q$-ary …
The Golomb-Welch conjecture states that there are no perfect $e$-error-correcting Lee codes in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ ($PL(n,e)$-codes) whenever $n\geq 3$ and $e\geq 2$. A special case of this conjecture is when $e=2$. In a recent paper of A. Campello, S. Costa and the author of this paper, it is proved that the set $\mathcal{N}$ of dimensions $n\geq 3$ for which there are no linear $PL(n,2)$-codes is infinite and $\#\{n \in \mathcal{N}: n\leq x\} \geq \frac{x}{3\ln(x)/2} (1+o(1))$. In this paper we present a simple and elementary argument which allows to improve the above result to $\#\{n \in \mathca…
The Krotov combining construction of perfect 1-error-correcting binary codes from 2000 and a theorem of Heden saying that every non-full-rank perfect 1-error-correcting binary code can be constructed by this combining construction is generalized to the $q$-ary case. Simply, every non-full-rank perfect code $C$ is the union of a well-defined family of $μ$-components $K_μ$, where $μ$ belongs to an "outer" perfect code $C^*$, and these components are at distance three from each other. Components from distinct codes can thus freely be combined to obtain new perfect codes. The Phelps general produc…
In this paper, we construct systematic $q$-ary two-deletion correcting codes and burst-deletion correcting codes, where $q\geq 2$ is an even integer. For two-deletion codes, our construction has redundancy $5\log n+O(\log q\log\log n)$ and has encoding complexity near-linear in $n$, where $n$ is the length of the message sequences. For burst-deletion codes, we first present a construction of binary codes with redundancy $\log n+9\log\log n+γ_t+o(\log\log n)$ bits $(γ_t$ is a constant that depends only on $t)$ and capable of correcting a burst of at most $t$ deletions, which improves the Lenz-P…
This paper constructs a non-binary code correcting a single $b$-burst of insertions or deletions with a large cardinality. This paper also proposes a decoding algorithm of this code and evaluates a lower bound of the cardinality of this code. Moreover, we evaluate an asymptotic upper bound on the cardinality of codes which correct a single burst of insertions or deletions.
The minimum distance graph of a code has the codewords as vertices and edges exactly when the Hamming distance between two codewords equals the minimum distance of the code. A constructive proof for reconstructibility of an extended perfect binary one-error-correcting code from its minimum distance graph is presented. Consequently, inequivalent such codes have nonisomorphic minimum distance graphs. Moreover, it is shown that the automorphism group of a minimum distance graph is isomorphic to that of the corresponding code.
The problem of correcting deletions has received significant attention, partly because of the prevalence of these errors in DNA data storage. In this paper, we study the problem of correcting a consecutive burst of at most $t$ deletions in non-binary sequences. We first propose a non-binary code correcting a burst of at most 2 deletions for $q$-ary alphabets. Afterwards, we extend this result to the case where the length of the burst can be at most $t$ where $t$ is a constant. Finally, we consider the setup where the sequences that are transmitted are permutations. The proposed codes are the l…
This paper computationally obtains optimal bounded-weight, binary, error-correcting codes for a variety of distance bounds and dimensions. We compare the sizes of our codes to the sizes of optimal constant-weight, binary, error-correcting codes, and evaluate the differences.
Best and Brouwer [Discrete Math. 17 (1977), 235-245] proved that triply-shortened and doubly-shortened binary Hamming codes (which have length $2^m-4$ and $2^m-3$, respectively) are optimal. Properties of such codes are here studied, determining among other things parameters of certain subcodes. A utilization of these properties makes a computer-aided classification of the optimal binary one-error-correcting codes of lengths 12 and 13 possible; there are 237610 and 117823 such codes, respectively (with 27375 and 17513 inequivalent extensions). This completes the classification of optimal binar…

Multi-class classification is mandatory for real world problems and one of promising techniques for multi-class classification is Error Correcting Output Code. We propose a method for constructing the Error Correcting Output Code to obtain the suitable combination of positive and negative classes encoded to represent binary classifiers. The minimum weight perfect matching algorithm is applied to find the optimal pairs of subset of classes by using the generalization performance as a weighting criterion. Based on our method, each subset of classes with positive and negative labels is appropriat…
Correcting insertions/deletions as well as substitution errors simultaneously plays an important role in DNA-based storage systems as well as in classical communications. This paper deals with the fundamental task of constructing codes that can correct a single insertion or deletion along with a single substitution. A non-asymptotic upper bound on the size of single-deletion single-substitution correcting codes is derived, showing that the redundancy of such a code of length $n$ has to be at least $2 \log n$. The bound is presented both for binary and non-binary codes while an extension to sin…
We prove that every $1$-error-correcting code over a finite field can be embedded in a $1$-perfect code of some larger length. Embedding in this context means that the original code is a subcode of the resulting $1$-perfect code and can be obtained from it by repeated shortening. Further, we generalize the results to partitions: every partition of the Hamming space into $1$-error-correcting codes can be embedded in a partition of a space of some larger dimension into $1$-perfect codes. For the partitions, the embedding length is close to the theoretical bound for the general case and optimal f…
We consider network coding for networks experiencing worst-case bit-flip errors, and argue that this is a reasonable model for highly dynamic wireless network transmissions. We demonstrate that in this setup prior network error-correcting schemes can be arbitrarily far from achieving the optimal network throughput. We propose a new metric for errors under this model. Using this metric, we prove a new Hamming-type upper bound on the network capacity. We also show a commensurate lower bound based on GV-type codes that can be used for error-correction. The codes used to attain the lower bound are…
We compare the performance of short-length linear binary codes on the binary erasure channel and the binary-input Gaussian channel. We use a universal decoder that can decode any linear binary block code: Gaussian-elimination based Maximum-Likelihood decoder on the erasure channel and probabilistic Ordered Statistics Decoder on the Gaussian channel. As such we compare codes and not decoders. The word error rate versus the channel parameter is found for LDPC, Reed-Muller, Polar, and BCH codes at length 256 bits. BCH codes outperform other codes in absence of cyclic redundancy check. Under joint…
Berlekamp and Zigangirov completely determined the capacity error function for binary error correcting codes with noiseless feedback. It is still an unsolved problem if the upper bound for the capacity error function in the non-binary case of Ahlswede, Lebedev, and Deppe is sharp. We consider wraparound channels with limited magnitude and noiseless feedback. We completely determine the capacity error function for all $q$-ary wraparound channels with a magnitude of level $r$. All of our algorithms use partial noiseless feedback. Furthermore, a special case of the problem is equivalent to Shanno…
Let $A_2(n,d)$ be the maximum size of a binary code of length $n$ and minimum distance $d$. In this paper we present the following new lower bounds: $A_2(18,4) \ge 5632$, $A_2(21,4) \ge 40960$, $A_2(22,4) \ge 81920$, $A_2(23,4) \ge 163840$, $A_2(24,4) \ge 327680$, $A_2(24,10) \ge 136$, and $A_2(25,6) \ge 17920$. The new lower bounds are a result of a systematic computer search over transitive permutation groups.
An interactive error correcting code ($\mathsf{iECC}$) is an interactive protocol with the guarantee that the receiver can correctly determine the sender's message, even in the presence of noise. This generalizes the concept of an error correcting code ($\mathsf{ECC}$), which is a non-interactive $\mathsf{iECC}$ that is known to have erasure resilience capped at $\frac12$. The work of \cite{GuptaTZ21} constructed the first $\mathsf{iECC}$ resilient to $> \frac12$ adversarial erasures. However, their $\mathsf{iECC}$ has communication complexity quadratic in the message size. In our work, we con…
The rank modulation scheme has been proposed for efficient writing and storing data in non-volatile memory storage. Error-correction in the rank modulation scheme is done by considering permutation codes. In this paper we consider codes in the set of all permutations on $n$ elements, $S_n$, using the Kendall's $τ$-metric. We prove that there are no perfect single-error-correcting codes in $S_n$, where $n>4$ is a prime or $4\leq n\leq 10$. We also prove that if such a code exists for $n$ which is not a prime then the code should have some uniform structure. We define some variations of the Kend…
Motivated by applications in DNA-based storage and communication systems, we study deletion and insertion errors simultaneously in a burst. In particular, we study a type of error named $t$-deletion-$s$-insertion-burst ($(t,s)$-burst for short) which is a generalization of the $(2,1)$-burst error proposed by Schoeny {\it et. al}. Such an error deletes $t$ consecutive symbols and inserts an arbitrary sequence of length $s$ at the same coordinate. We provide a sphere-packing upper bound on the size of binary codes that can correct a $(t,s)$-burst error, showing that the redundancy of such codes …
An error correcting code ($\mathsf{ECC}$) allows a sender to send a message to a receiver such that even if a constant fraction of the communicated bits are corrupted, the receiver can still learn the message correctly. Due to their importance and fundamental nature, $\mathsf{ECC}$s have been extensively studied, one of the main goals being to maximize the fraction of errors that the $\mathsf{ECC}$ is resilient to. For adversarial erasure errors (over a binary channel) the maximal error resilience of an $\mathsf{ECC}$ is $\frac12$ of the communicated bits. In this work, we break this $\frac12$…
We address the problem of correcting a single error in an arbitrary discrete memoryless channel with error-free instantaneous feedback. For the case of a one-time feedback, we propose a method for constructing optimal transmission strategies. The obtained result allows us to prove that for a binary channel, two feedbacks are sufficient to transmit the same number of messages as in the case of complete feedback. We also apply the developed techniques to a binary asymmetric channel to construct transmission strategies for small lengths.

Permutation and multipermutation codes in the Ulam metric have been suggested for use in non-volatile memory storage systems such as flash memory devices. In this paper we introduce a new method to calculate permutation sphere sizes in the Ulam metric using Young Tableaux and prove the non-existence of non-trivial perfect permutation codes in the Ulam metric. We then extend the study to multipermutations, providing tight upper and lower bounds on multipermutation Ulam sphere sizes and resulting upper and lower bounds on the maximal size of multipermutation codes in the Ulam metric.
The class of poset metrics is very large and contains some interesting families of metrics. A family of metrics, based on posets which are formed from disjoint chains which have the same size, is examined. A necessary and sufficient condition, for the existence of perfect single-error-correcting codes for such poset metrics, is proved.
Based on a sufficient condition proposed by Hollmann and Xiang for constructing triple-error-correcting codes, the minimum distance of a binary cyclic code $\mathcal{C}_{1,3,13}$ with three zeros $α$, $α^3$, and $α^{13}$ of length $2^m-1$ and the weight divisibility of its dual code are studied, where $m\geq 5$ is odd and $α$ is a primitive element of the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{2^m}$. The code $\mathcal{C}_{1,3,13}$ is proven to have the same weight distribution as the binary triple-error-correcting primitive BCH code $\mathcal{C}_{1,3,5}$ of the same length.
Several new applications and a number of new mathematical techniques have increased the research on error-correcting codes in the Lee metric in the last decade. In this work we consider several coding problems and constructions of error-correcting codes in the Lee metric. First, we consider constructions of dense error-correcting codes in relatively small dimensions over small alphabets. The second problem we solve is construction of diametric perfect codes with minimum distance four. We will construct such codes over various lengths and alphabet sizes. The third problem is to transfer an n-di…
The paper deals with the perfect 1-error correcting codes over a finite field with $q$ elements (briefly $q$-ary 1-perfect codes). We show that the orthogonal code to the $q$-ary non-full-rank 1-perfect code of length $n = (q^{m}-1)/(q-1)$ is a $q$-ary constant-weight code with Hamming weight equals to $q^{m - 1}$ where $m$ is any natural number not less than two. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for $q$-ary 1-perfect codes of non-full rank. We suggest a generalization of the concatenation construction to the $q$-ary case and construct the ternary 1-perfect codes of length 13 and …
The binary primitive triple-error-correcting BCH code is a cyclic code of minimum distance 7 with generator polynomial having zeros $α$, $α^3$ and $α^5$ where $α$ is a primitive root of unity. The zero set of the code is said to be {1,3,5}. In the 1970's Kasami showed that one can construct similar triple-error-correcting codes using zero sets consisting of different triples than the BCH codes. Furthermore, in 2000 Chang et. al. found new triples leading to triple-error-correcting codes. In this paper a new such triple is presented. In addition a new method is presented that may be of interest…
Lee codes have been intensively studied for more than 40 years. Interest in these codes has been triggered by the Golomb-Welch conjecture on the existence of the perfect error-correcting Lee codes. In this paper we deal with the existence and enumeration of diameter perfect Lee codes. As main results we determine all $q$ for which there exists a linear diameter-4 perfect Lee code of word length $n$ over $Z_{q},$ and prove that for each $n\geq 3$ there are uncountable many diameter-4 perfect Lee codes of word length $n$ over $Z.$ This is in a strict contrast with perfect error-correcting Lee co…
In 2007, Martinian and Trott presented codes for correcting a burst of erasures with a minimum decoding delay. Their construction employs [n,k] codes that can correct any burst of erasures (including wrap-around bursts) of length n-k. The raised the question if such [n,k] codes exist for all integers k and n with 1<= k <= n and all fields (in particular, for the binary field). In this note, we answer this question affirmatively by giving two recursive constructions and a direct one.
Some properties of perfect transitive binary codes of length 15 and extended perfect transitive binary codes of length 16 are presented for reference purposes.
We propose a novel construction of product codes for high-density magnetic recording based on binary low-density parity check (LDPC) codes and binary image of Reed Solomon (RS) codes. Moreover, two novel algorithms are proposed to decode the codes in the presence of both AWGN errors and scattered hard errors (SHEs). Simulation results show that at a bit error rate (bER) of approximately 10^-8, our method allows improving the error performance by approximately 1.9dB compared with that of a hard decision decoder of RS codes of the same length and code rate. For the mixed error channel including …
The rank-modulation scheme has been recently proposed for efficiently storing data in nonvolatile memories. Error-correcting codes are essential for rank modulation, however, existing results have been limited. In this work we explore a new approach, \emph{systematic error-correcting codes for rank modulation}. Systematic codes have the benefits of enabling efficient information retrieval and potentially supporting more efficient encoding and decoding procedures. We study systematic codes for rank modulation under Kendall's $τ$-metric as well as under the $\ell_\infty$-metric. In Kendall's $τ$…
We consider the weight spectrum of a class of quasi-perfect binary linear codes with code distance 4. For example, extended Hamming code and Panchenko code are the known members of this class. Also, it is known that in many cases Panchenko code has the minimal number of weight 4 codewords. We give exact recursive formulas for the weight spectrum of quasi-perfect codes and their dual codes. As an example of application of the weight spectrum we derive a lower estimate for the conditional probability of correction of erasure patterns of high weights (equal to or greater than code distance).
In the rank modulation scheme for flash memories, permutation codes have been studied. In this paper, we study perfect permutation codes in $S_n$, the set of all permutations on $n$ elements, under the Kendall τ-Metric. We answer one open problem proposed by Buzaglo and Etzion. That is, proving the nonexistence of perfect codes in $S_n$, under the Kendall τ-metric, for more values of $n$. Specifically, we present the recursive formulas for the size of a ball with radius $r$ in $S_n$ under the Kendall τ-metric. Further, We prove that there are no perfect $t$-error-correcting codes in $S_n$ unde…
