Best and Brouwer [Discrete Math. 17 (1977), 235-245] proved that triply-shortened and doubly-shortened binary Hamming codes (which have length $2^m-4$ and $2^m-3$, respectively) are optimal. Properties of such codes are here studied, determining among other things parameters of certain subcodes. A utilization of these properties makes a computer-aided classification of the optimal binary one-error-correcting codes of lengths 12 and 13 possible; there are 237610 and 117823 such codes, respectively (with 27375 and 17513 inequivalent extensions). This completes the classification of optimal binary one-error-correcting codes for all lengths up to 15. Some properties of the classified codes are further investigated. Finally, it is proved that for any $m \geq 4$, there are optimal binary one-error-correcting codes of length $2^m-4$ and $2^m-3$ that cannot be lengthened to perfect codes of length $2^m-1$.
We first give a construction of binary $t_1$-deletion-$t_2$-insertion-burst correcting codes with redundancy at most $\log(n)+(t_1-t_2-1)\log\log(n)+O(1)$, where $t_1\ge 2t_2$. Then we give an improved construction of binary codes capable of correcting a burst of $4$ non-consecutive deletions, whose redundancy is reduced from $7\log(n)+2\log\log(n)+O(1)$ to $4\log(n)+6\log\log(n)+O(1)$. Lastly, by connecting non-binary $b$-burst-deletion correcting codes with binary $2b$-deletion-$b$-insertion-burst correcting codes, we give a new construction of non-binary $b$-burst-deletion correcting codes …
In this paper, we construct systematic $q$-ary two-deletion correcting codes and burst-deletion correcting codes, where $q\geq 2$ is an even integer. For two-deletion codes, our construction has redundancy $5\log n+O(\log q\log\log n)$ and has encoding complexity near-linear in $n$, where $n$ is the length of the message sequences. For burst-deletion codes, we first present a construction of binary codes with redundancy $\log n+9\log\log n+γ_t+o(\log\log n)$ bits $(γ_t$ is a constant that depends only on $t)$ and capable of correcting a burst of at most $t$ deletions, which improves the Lenz-P…
This paper constructs a non-binary code correcting a single $b$-burst of insertions or deletions with a large cardinality. This paper also proposes a decoding algorithm of this code and evaluates a lower bound of the cardinality of this code. Moreover, we evaluate an asymptotic upper bound on the cardinality of codes which correct a single burst of insertions or deletions.
The problem of correcting deletions has received significant attention, partly because of the prevalence of these errors in DNA data storage. In this paper, we study the problem of correcting a consecutive burst of at most $t$ deletions in non-binary sequences. We first propose a non-binary code correcting a burst of at most 2 deletions for $q$-ary alphabets. Afterwards, we extend this result to the case where the length of the burst can be at most $t$ where $t$ is a constant. Finally, we consider the setup where the sequences that are transmitted are permutations. The proposed codes are the l…
Maximum run-length limited codes are constraint codes used in communication and data storage systems. Insertion/deletion correcting codes correct insertion or deletion errors caused in transmitted sequences and are used for combating synchronization errors. This paper investigates the maximum run-length limited single insertion/deletion correcting (RLL-SIDC) codes. More precisely, we construct efficiently encodable and decodable RLL-SIDC codes. Moreover, we present its encoding algorithm and show the redundancy of the code.

Correcting insertions/deletions as well as substitution errors simultaneously plays an important role in DNA-based storage systems as well as in classical communications. This paper deals with the fundamental task of constructing codes that can correct a single insertion or deletion along with a single substitution. A non-asymptotic upper bound on the size of single-deletion single-substitution correcting codes is derived, showing that the redundancy of such a code of length $n$ has to be at least $2 \log n$. The bound is presented both for binary and non-binary codes while an extension to sin…
Berlekamp and Zigangirov completely determined the capacity error function for binary error correcting codes with noiseless feedback. It is still an unsolved problem if the upper bound for the capacity error function in the non-binary case of Ahlswede, Lebedev, and Deppe is sharp. We consider wraparound channels with limited magnitude and noiseless feedback. We completely determine the capacity error function for all $q$-ary wraparound channels with a magnitude of level $r$. All of our algorithms use partial noiseless feedback. Furthermore, a special case of the problem is equivalent to Shanno…
An interactive error correcting code ($\mathsf{iECC}$) is an interactive protocol with the guarantee that the receiver can correctly determine the sender's message, even in the presence of noise. This generalizes the concept of an error correcting code ($\mathsf{ECC}$), which is a non-interactive $\mathsf{iECC}$ that is known to have erasure resilience capped at $\frac12$. The work of \cite{GuptaTZ21} constructed the first $\mathsf{iECC}$ resilient to $> \frac12$ adversarial erasures. However, their $\mathsf{iECC}$ has communication complexity quadratic in the message size. In our work, we con…
Motivated by applications in DNA-based storage and communication systems, we study deletion and insertion errors simultaneously in a burst. In particular, we study a type of error named $t$-deletion-$s$-insertion-burst ($(t,s)$-burst for short) which is a generalization of the $(2,1)$-burst error proposed by Schoeny {\it et. al}. Such an error deletes $t$ consecutive symbols and inserts an arbitrary sequence of length $s$ at the same coordinate. We provide a sphere-packing upper bound on the size of binary codes that can correct a $(t,s)$-burst error, showing that the redundancy of such codes …
An error correcting code ($\mathsf{ECC}$) allows a sender to send a message to a receiver such that even if a constant fraction of the communicated bits are corrupted, the receiver can still learn the message correctly. Due to their importance and fundamental nature, $\mathsf{ECC}$s have been extensively studied, one of the main goals being to maximize the fraction of errors that the $\mathsf{ECC}$ is resilient to. For adversarial erasure errors (over a binary channel) the maximal error resilience of an $\mathsf{ECC}$ is $\frac12$ of the communicated bits. In this work, we break this $\frac12$…
A (tandem) duplication of length $ k $ is an insertion of an exact copy of a substring of length $ k $ next to its original position. This and related types of impairments are of relevance in modeling communication in the presence of synchronization errors, as well as in several information storage applications. We demonstrate that Levenshtein's construction of binary codes correcting insertions of zeros is, with minor modifications, applicable also to channels with arbitrary alphabets and with duplication errors of arbitrary (but fixed) length $ k $. Furthermore, we derive bounds on the cardi…
Due to its high data density and longevity, DNA is considered a promising medium for satisfying ever-increasing data storage needs. However, the diversity of errors that occur in DNA sequences makes efficient error-correction a challenging task. This paper aims to address simultaneously correcting two types of errors, namely, short tandem duplication and substitution errors. We focus on tandem repeats of length at most 3 and design codes for correcting an arbitrary number of duplication errors and one substitution error. Because a substituted symbol can be duplicated many times (as part of sub…
In this paper, we present an efficiently encodable and decodable code construction that is capable of correction a burst of deletions of length at most $k$. The redundancy of this code is $\log n + k(k+1)/2\log \log n+c_k$ for some constant $c_k$ that only depends on $k$ and thus is scaling-optimal. The code can be split into two main components. First, we impose a constraint that allows to locate the burst of deletions up to an interval of size roughly $\log n$. Then, with the knowledge of the approximate location of the burst, we use several {shifted Varshamov-Tenengolts} codes to correct th…
Recent work by Smagloy et al. (ISIT 2020) shows that the redundancy of a single-deletion $s$-substitution correcting code is asymptotically at least $(s+1)\log n+o(\log n)$, where $n$ is the length of the codes. They also provide a construction of single-deletion and single-substitution codes with redundancy $6\log n+8$. In this paper, we propose a family of systematic single-deletion $s$-substitution correcting codes of length $n$ with asymptotical redundancy at most $(3s+4)\log n+o(\log n)$ and polynomial encoding/decoding complexity, where $s\geq 2$ is a constant. Specifically, the encoding…
We address the problem of correcting a single error in an arbitrary discrete memoryless channel with error-free instantaneous feedback. For the case of a one-time feedback, we propose a method for constructing optimal transmission strategies. The obtained result allows us to prove that for a binary channel, two feedbacks are sufficient to transmit the same number of messages as in the case of complete feedback. We also apply the developed techniques to a binary asymmetric channel to construct transmission strategies for small lengths.

Permutation codes and multi-permutation codes have been widely considered due to their various applications, especially in flash memory. In this paper, we consider permutation codes and multi-permutation codes against a burst of stable deletions. In particular, we propose a construction of permutation codes correcting a burst stable deletion of length $s$, with redundancy $\log n+ 2\log \log n+O(1)$. Compared to the previous known results, our improvement relies on a different strategy to retrieve the missing symbol on the first row of the array representation of a permutation. We also general…
In this work, we investigate the problem of constructing codes capable of correcting two deletions. In particular, we construct a code that requires redundancy approximately 8 log n + O(log log n) bits of redundancy, where n is the length of the code. To the best of the author's knowledge, this represents the best known construction in that it requires the lowest number of redundant bits for a code correcting two deletions.
Consider a binary word being transmitted through a communication channel that introduces deletable errors where each bit of the word is either retained, flipped, erased or deleted. The simplest code for correcting \emph{all} possible deletable error patterns of a fixed size is the repetition code whose redundancy grows linearly with the code length. In this paper, we relax this condition and construct codes capable of correcting \emph{nearly} all deletable error patterns of a fixed size, with redundancy growing as a logarithm of the word length.
Insertion and deletion (insdel for short) errors are synchronization errors in communication systems caused by the loss of positional information in the message. Reed-Solomon codes have gained a lot of interest due to its encoding simplicity, well structuredness and list-decoding capability in the classical setting. This interest also translates to the insdel metric setting, as the Guruswami-Sudan decoding algorithm can be utilized to provide a deletion correcting algorithm in the insdel metric. Nevertheless, there have been few studies on the insdel error-correcting capability of Reed-Solomon…
Optimal codes for correcting a single (wrap-around) burst of errors
Motivated by applications to DNA-storage, flash memory, and magnetic recording, we study perfect burst-correcting codes for the limited-magnitude error channel. These codes are lattices that tile the integer grid with the appropriate error ball. We construct two classes of such perfect codes correcting a single burst of length $2$ for $(1,0)$-limited-magnitude errors, both for cyclic and non-cyclic bursts. We also present a generic construction that requires a primitive element in a finite field with specific properties. We then show that in various parameter regimes such primitive elements ex…
