First-principles calculations reveal half metallicity in zigzag boron nitride (BN) nanoribbons (ZBNNRs). When the B edge, but not the N edge, of the ZBNNR is passivated, despite being a pure $sp$-electron system, the ribbon shows a giant spin splitting. The electrons at the Fermi level are 100% spin polarized with a half-metal gap of 0.38 eV and its conductivity is dominated by metallic single-spin states. The two states across at the Dirac point have different molecular origins, which signals a switch of carrier velocity. The ZBNNR should be a good potential candidate for widegap spintronics.
Using the ab initio pseudopotential density functional method, we investigate the functionalization of halogen molecules into graphene-based nanostructures with zigzag and armchair edges. We find that halogen molecules adsorb through chemisorption on the zigzag edge carbon atoms with a binding energy of ~1-5 eV and their adsorption on a perfect zigzag edge is preferred, in sharp contrast to physisorption on the armchair edge and elsewhere where they adsorb with a binding energy of ~0.07 eV. We suggest that our findings would be utilized for an approach to the separation of zigzag graphene nano…
We have studied the adsorption of Li atoms at the hollow sites of graphene nanoribbons (zigzag and armchair), graphene, and fullerenes by means of density functional theory calculations including local and semilocal functionals. The binding energy of a Li atom on armchair nanoribbons (of about 1.70 eV for LSDA and 1.20 eV for PBE) is comparable to the corresponding value in graphene (1.55 and 1.04 eV for LSDA and PBE, respectively). Notably, the interaction between Li and zigzag nanoribbons is much stronger. The binding energy of Li at the edges of zigzag nanoribbons is about 50% stronger than…
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons in the presence of extended line defects, substrate impurities and edge roughness along the nanoribbon's length. A nearest-neighbor tight-binding model for the electronic structure and a fourth nearest- neighbor force constant model for the phonon bandstructure are used. For transport we employ quantum mechanical non-equilibrium Green's function simulations. Starting from the pristine zigzag nanoribbon structure that exhibits very poor thermoelectric performance, we demonstrate how after a series of engin…
We investigate the functionalization of functional groups to graphene nanoribbons with zigzag and armchair edges using first principles calculations. We find that the formation energy for the configuration of the functional groups functionalized to the zigzag edge is ~0.2 eV per functional group lower than that to the armchair edge. The formation energy difference arises from a structural deformation on the armchair edge by the functionalization whereas there is no structural deformation on the zigzag edge. Selective functionalization on the zigzag edge takes place at a condition of the temper…
Electronic structures of SiC nanoribbons have been studied by spin-polarized density functional calculations. The armchair nanoribbons are nonmagnetic semiconductor, while the zigzag nanoribbons are magnetic metal. The spin polarization in zigzag SiC nanoribbons is originated from the unpaired electrons localized on the ribbon edges. Interestingly, the zigzag nanoribbons narrower than $\sim$4 nm present half-metallic behavior. Without the aid of external field or chemical modification, the metal-free half-metallicity predicted for narrow SiC zigzag nanoribbons opens a facile way for nanomateri…
Using ab initio calculations based on density-functional theory we have performed a theoretical investigation of substitutional boron and nitrogen impurities in silicon carbide (SiC) nanoribbons. We have considered hydrogen terminated SiC ribbons with zigzag and armchair edges. In both systems we verify that the boron and nitrogen atoms energetically prefer to be localized at the edges of the nanoribbons. However, while boron preferentially substitutes a silicon atom, nitrogen prefers to occupy a carbon site. In addition, our electronic-structure calculations indicate that (i) substitutional b…
Using a tight binding model, we theoretically study the electronic properties of zigzag boron-carbon-nitride (BCN) nanoribbons where the outermost C atoms of zigzag graphene nanoribbons are replaced with B and N atoms. We show that the flat bands and edge states appear at the Fermi level when the number of B and N atoms are equal except the case of six times supercell. To investigate the origin of the edge states in BCN nanoribbons, we consider the semi-infinite graphene sheet with zigzag edge where outermost C atoms are replaced with B and N atoms. We analytically demonstrate the presence of …
We investigate electron and phonon transport through edge disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons based on the same methodological tool of nonequilibrium Green functions. We show that edge disorder dramatically reduces phonon thermal transport while being only weakly detrimental to electronic conduction. The behavior of the electronic and phononic elastic mean free paths points to the possibility of realizing an electron-crystal coexisting with a phonon-glass. The calculated thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) values qualify zigzag graphene nanoribbons as a very promising material for thermoele…
The Dirac electrons of graphene, an intrinsic zero gap semiconductor, uniquely carry spin and pseudospin that give rise to many fascinating electronic and transport properties. While isolated zigzag graphene nanoribbons are antiferromagnetic semiconductors, we show by means of first-principles and tight-binding calculations that zigzag graphene nanoribbons supported on graphene are half-metallic as a result of spin- and pseudospin-symmetry breaking. In particular, half-metallic Dirac cones are formed at K (K') near the Fermi level. The present results demonstrate that the unique combination of…
We study electronic properties of graphene derivatives which have closed edges. They are finite-length graphene nanoribbons and graphene nanodisks. No metallic states are found in finite-length zigzag nanoribbons though all infinite-length zigzag nanoribbons are metallic. We also study hexagonal, parallelogrammic and trigonal nanodisks with zigzag or armchair edges. No metallic states are found in these nanodisks either except trigonal zigzag nanodisks. It is interesting that we can design the degeneracy of the metallic states arbitrarily in trigonal zigzag nanodisks by changing the size.
We theoretically study the electronic properties of BC2N nanoribbons with zigzag edges using a tight binding model. We show that the zigzag BC2N nanoribbons have the flat bands and edge states when atoms are arranged as B-C-N-C along the zigzag lines. The length of the flat bands in the wavevector space depends on the atomic arrangement. This property can be explained by the deviation of the linear dispersion of the BC2N sheet from K point of the honeycomb lattice. The charge distributions in the edge states depend on the atomic arrangement. We also show that the charge distribution of the edg…
Graphene nanoribbons are prepared inside boron nitride nanotubes by liquid phase encapsulation and subsequent annealing of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. The product is imaged with high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and characterized by optical absorption and Raman spectroscopy. Carbon-containing material is detected inside the boron nitride nanotubes with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The observed structures twist under the electron beam and the characteristic features of nanoribbons appear in the Raman spectra.
Elemental phosphorus nanostructures are notorious for a large number of allotropes, which limits their usefulness as semiconductors. To limit this structural diversity, we synthesize selectively quasi-1D phosphorus nanostructures inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that act both as stable templates and nanoreactors. Whereas zigzag phosphorus nanoribbons form preferably in CNTs with an inner diameter exceeding 1.4 nm, a previously unknown square columnar structure of phosphorus is observed to form inside narrower nanotubes. Our findings are supported by electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy obs…
Based on first-principles calculations, electronic properties of edge-functionalized zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) on SiO2 substrate are presented. Metallic or semiconducting properties of ZGNRs are revealed due to various interactions between edge-hydrogenated ZGNRs and different SiO2 (0001) surfaces. Bivalent functional groups decorating ZGNRs serve as the bridge between active edges of ZGNRs and SiO2. These functional groups stabilize ZGNRs on substrate, as well as modify the edge states of ZGNRs and further affect their electronic properties. Band gaps are opened owing to edge states…
We report on the possibility for a spin valve effect driven by edge defect engineering of zigzag graphene nanoribbons. Based on a mean-field spin unrestricted Hubbard model, electronic band structures and conductance profiles are derived, using a self-consistent scheme to include gate-induced charge density. The use of an external gate is found to trigger a semiconductor-metal transition in clean zigzag graphene nanoribbons, whereas it yields a closure of the spin-split bandgap in the presence of Klein edge defects. These features could be exploited to make novel charge and spin based switches…
There has been tremendous interest in manipulating electron and hole-spin states in low-dimensional structures for electronic and spintronic applications. We study the edge magnetic coupling and anisotropy in zigzag stanene nanoribbons, by first-principles calculations. Taking into account considerable spin-orbit coupling and ferromagnetism at each edge, zigzag stanene nanoribbon is insulating and its band gap depends on the inter-edge magnetic coupling and the magnetization direction. Especially for nanoribbon edges with out-of-plane antiferromagnetic coupling, two non-degenerate valleys of e…
We performed electronic structure calculations based on the first-principles many-body theory approach in order to study quasiparticle band gaps, and optical absorption spectra of hydrogen-passivated zigzag SiC nanoribbons. Self-energy corrections are included using the GW approximation, and excitonic effects are included using the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We have systematically studied nanoribbons that have widths between 0.6 $\text{nm}$ and 2.2 $\text{nm}$. Quasiparticle corrections widened the Kohn-Sham band gaps because of enhanced interaction effects, caused by reduced dimensionality. Zig…
Vibrational properties of graphene nanoribbons are examined with density functional based tight-binding method and non-resonant bond polarization theory. We show that the recently discovered reconstructed zigzag edge can be identified from the emergence of high-energy vibrational mode due to strong triple bonds at the edges. This mode is visible also in the Raman spectrum. Total vibrational density of states of the reconstructed zigzag edge is observed to resemble the vibrational density of states of armchair, rather than zigzag, graphene nanoribbon. Edge-related vibrational states increase in…
The generalized Bloch theorem was applied to calculate the spin stiffness and to consider its tendencies when introducing the doping in zigzag graphene nanoribbons. To reach the intentions, two different flat spin spiral formations were constructed by fixing the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin arrangements at the two different edges by applying a constraint scheme method. A spin stiffness was then calculated by means of a quadratic order function, which maps the total energy difference in the self-consistent calculations onto the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. We found a very high spin stiff…
Uniaxial tensile properties of hexagonal boron nitride nanoribbons and dependence of these properties on temperature, strain rate, and the inclusion of vacancy defects have been explored with molecular dynamics simulations using Tersoff potential. The ultimate tensile strength of pristine hexagonal boron nitride nanoribbon of 26 nm x 5 nm with armchair chirality is found to be 100.5 GPa. The ultimate tensile strength and strain have been found decreasing with increasing the temperature while an opposite trend has been observed for increasing the strain rate. Furthermore, the vacancy defects re…
As a possible way of modifying the intrinsic properties of graphene we study the doping of graphene by embedded boron clusters with density functional theory. Cluster doping is technologically relevant as the cluster implantation technique can be readily applied to graphene. We find that B7 clusters embedded into graphene and graphene nanoribbons are structurally stable and locally metallize the system. This is done both by the reduction of the Fermi energy and by the introduction of boron states near the Fermi level. A linear chain of boron clusters forms a metallic "wire" inside the graphene…
Carbon nanostructures with zigzag edges exhibit unique properties with exciting potential applications. Such nanostructures are generally synthesized under vacuum because their zigzag edges are unstable under ambient conditions: a barrier that must be surmounted to achieve their scalable exploitation. Here, we prove the viability of chemical protection/deprotection strategies for this aim, demonstrated on labile chiral graphene nanoribbons (chGNRs). Upon hydrogenation, the chGNRs survive an exposure to air, after which they are easily converted back to their original structure via annealing. W…
Using a continuum Dirac theory, we study the density and spin response of zigzag edge terminated graphene ribbons subjected to edge potentials and Zeeman fields. Our analytical calculations of the density and spin responses of the closed system (fixed particle number) to the static edge fields, show a highly nonlinear Weber-Fechner type behavior where the response depends logarithmically on the edge potential. The dependence of the response on the size of the system (e.g. width of a nanoribbon) is also uncovered. Zigzag edge graphene nanoribbons, therefore, provide a realization of response of…
At B3LYP level of theory, we predict that the half-metallicity in zigzag edge graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) can be realized when an external electric field is applied across the ribbon. The critical electric field to induce the half-metallicity decreases with the increase of the ribbon width. Both the spin polarization and half-metallicity are removed when the edge state electrons fully transferred from one side to the other under very strong electric field. The electric field range under which ZGNR remain half-metallic increases with the ribbon width. Our study demonstrates a rich field-induced …
It is known that there is a wide class of quasi-two-dimensional graphenelike nanomaterials which in many respects can outperform graphene. So, here in addition to graphene, the attention is directed to stanene (buckled honeycomb structure) and phosphorene (puckered honeycomb structure). It is shown that, depending on the doping, these materials can have magnetically ordered edges. Computed diagrams of magnetic phases illustrate that, on the one hand, n-type doped narrow zigzag nanoribbons of graphene and stanene have antiferromagnetically aligned magnetic moments between the edges. On the othe…
Molybdenum disulfide nanoribbons with zigzag edges show ferromagnetic and metallic properties based on previous \emph{ab-initio} calculations. The investigation of the role of disorder on the magnetic properties is, however, still lacking due to the computational costs of these methods. In this work we fill this gap by studying the magnetic and electronic properties of several nanometer long MoS$_2$ zigzag nanoribbons using tight-binding and Hubbard Hamiltonians. Our results reveal that proper tight-binding parameters for the edge atoms are crucial to obtain quantitatively the metallic states …
Electronic properties of zigzag boron-carbon-nitride (BCN) nanoribbons, where the outermost C atoms on the edges of graphene nanoribbons are replaced by B or N atoms, are theoretically studied using the first-principles calculations. We show that BCN nanoribbons are metallic, since several bands cross the Fermi level. For BCN nanoribbons in a rich H$_2$ environment, the so-called nearly free electron state appears just above the Fermi level because of the intrinsic giant Stark effect due to the internal electric field of a transverse dipole moment. The position of the nearly free electron stat…
Atomic and electronic structures of phosphorene nanoribbons are studied within density functional theory. These novel materials present different physical phenomena expected in two very different physical systems: one dimensional metallic chains and semiconductor surfaces. While `rugged' nanoribbons are semiconducting in their layer-terminnated structures, pure `linear' and `zigzag' nanoribbons are metallic due to metallic edge states. Linear nanoribbons undergo edge reconstruction and zigzag nanoribbons beyond a certain width undergo Peierls transition leading to opening of a band gap in the …
The influence of periodic edge vacancies and antidot arrays on the thermoelectric properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons is investigated. Using the Green's function method, the tight-binding approximation for the electron Hamiltonian and the 4th nearest neighbor approximation for the phonon dynamical matrix, we calculate the Seebeck coefficient and the thermoelectric figure of merit. It is found that, at a certain periodic arrangement of vacancies on both edges of zigzag nanoribbon, a finite band gap opens and almost twofold degenerate energy levels appear. As a result, a marked increase in…
Motivated by the recent successful formation of the MoSi2N4 monolayer [Hong et al., Sci. 369, 670 (2020)], the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of MoSi2N4 nanoribbons (NRs) is investigated for the first time . The band structure calculations showed spin-polarization in zigzag edges and a non-magnetic semiconducting character in armchair edges. For armchair-edges, we identify an indirect to direct band gap shift compared to the MoSi2N4 monolayer, and its energy gap increases with increasing NR width. Anisotropic electrical and magnetic behavior is observed via band structure calcu…
Zigzag phosphorene nanoribbons have quasi-flat band edge modes entirely detached from the bulk states. We analytically study the electronic transport through such edge states in the presence of a localized defect for semi-infinite and finite ribbons. Using the tight-binding model, we derive analytical expressions for the Green's function and transmission amplitude of both pristine and defective nanoribbons. We find that the transmission of both semi-infinite and finite ribbons is sensitive to the location of a single impurity defect with respect to the edge. By the presence of an impurity on t…
In this article, we study zigzag graphene nanoribbons with edges reconstructed with Stone-Wales defects, by means of an empirical (first-neighbor) tight-binding method, with parameters determined by ab-initio calculations of very narrow ribbons. We explore the characteristics of the electronic band structure with a focus on the nature of edge states. Edge reconstruction allows the appearance of a new type of edge states. They are dispersive, with non-zero amplitudes in both sub-lattices; furthermore, the amplitudes have two components that decrease with different decay lengths with the distanc…
We unveil the nature of the structural disorder in bottom-up zigzag graphene nanoribbons along with its effect on the magnetism and electronic transport on the basis of scanning probe microscopies and first-principles calculations. We find that edge-missing m-xylene units emerging during the cyclodehydrogenation step of the on-surface synthesis are the most common point defects. These "bite'' defects act as spin-1 paramagnetic centers, severely disrupt the conductance spectrum around the band extrema, and give rise to spin-polarized charge transport. We further show that the electronic conduct…
Although the unconventional $π$-magnetism at the zigzag edges of graphene holds promise for a wide array of applications, whether and to what degree it plays a role in their chemistry remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the addition of a hydrogen atom $-$ the simplest yet the most experimentally relevant adsorbate $-$ to zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs). We show that the $π$-magnetism governs the chemistry of ZGNRs, giving rise to a site-dependent reactivity of the carbon atoms and driving the hydrogenation process to the nanoribbon edges. Conversely, the chemisorbed hydrogen at…
Electric and thermoelectric properties of silicene nanoribbons doped with Al and P impurity atoms are investigated theoretically for both antiparallel and parallel orientations of the edge magnetic moments. In the former case, appropriately arranged impurities can lead to a net magnetic moment and thus also to spin thermoelectric effects. In the latter case, in turn, spin thermoelectric effects also occur in the absence of impurities. Numerical results based on ab-initio calculations show that the spin thermopower can be considerably enhanced by the impurities.
We study in this paper the edge polarizations and their consequences for a biased Bernal stacked bilayer graphene nanoribbon with zigzag termination. The magnetic states are classified according to the interlayer and intralayer couplings between the edge polarizations, and the magnetic phase diagram of doping versus bias voltage is given. Coplanar magnetic phase is found and the variation of its magnetic structure with the bias voltage is investigated. For all the magnetic states, we also discuss the possibility of the half-metallicity, and for a ribbon with perfect zigzag edges we predict sev…
One of severe limits of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) in future applications is that zigzag GNRs (ZGNRs) are gapless, so cannot be used in field effect transistors (FETs). In this paper, using tight-binding approach and first principles method, we derived and proved a general edge (boundary) condition for the opening of a significant bandgap in ZGNRs with defective edge structures. The proposed semiconducting GNRs have some interesting properties including the one that they can be embedded and integrated in a large piece of graphene without the need of completely cutting them out. We also demons…
We have performed density functional calculations as well as employed a tight-binding theory, to study the effect of passivation of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR) by Hydrogen. We show that each edge C atom bonded with 2 H atoms open up a gap and destroys magnetism for small widths of the nanoribbon. However, a re-entrant magnetism accompanied by a metallic electronic structure is observed from 8 rows and thicker nanoribbons. The electronic structure and magnetic state are quite complex for this type of termination, with sp$^3$ bonded edge atoms being non-magnetic, whereas the nearest neigh…
We investigated the reduction of the spin stiffness and the appearance of the spiral spin density waves when the electric field is applied on the zigzag graphene nanoribbons for the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic edge states. For that purpose, we exploited the generalized Bloch theorem combined with a constraint method to keep the direction of the magnetic moment of the carbon atom at the edges. We found that the ground state of ferromagnetic configuration is unstable and leads to the spiral ground state while the ground state of the antiferromagnetic configuration is robust. We also show…
We investigated the dependence of N$\acute{\textrm{e}}$el temperature as a critical temperature on the electric field and hole-electron doping in the antiferromagnetically ordered zigzag graphene nanoribbon. The temperature was calculated by averaging the magnon energy in the Brillouin zone within the mean-field approximation. We employed the generalized Bloch theorem instead of the supercell approach to reduce the computational cost significantly to obtain the magnon spectrum. We showed that the N$\acute{\textrm{e}}$el temperature reduces when increasing both the electric field and the hole-e…
The edge reconstruction of zigzag graphene nanoribbons to a stable line of alternatively fused seven and five membered rings with hydrogen passivation has been studied within density functional theory with both localized and extended basis approximations. Reconstruction of both edges results in a nonmagnetic metallic ground state, whereas the one edge reconstruction stabilizes the system in a ferromagnetic metallic ground state. The reconstructed edge suppresses the local spin density of atoms and contributes finite density of states at Fermi energy. Our study paves a new way to fabricate the …
The spin dependent charge transport in zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) has been investigated by the nonequilibrium Green's function method combined with the density functional theory at the local spin density approximation. The current versus voltage curve shows distinguished behaviors for symmetric and asymmetric ZGNRs and the doping on the ZGNR edges can manipulate the spin transport. In special cases that a Be atom is substitutionally doped on one edge of the symmetric ZGNRs, one spin current shows negative differential resistance while the other increases monotonically with the bias. T…
First-principles and semi-empirical tight binding calculations were performed to understand the adsorption of oxygen on the surface of two dimensional (2D) and zigzag stanene nano-ribbons. The intrinsic spin-orbit interaction is considered in the Kane-Mele tight binding model. The adsorption of an oxygen atom or molecule on the 2D stanene opens an electronic energy band gap. We investigate the helical edge states and topological phase in the pure zigzag stanene nano-ribbons. The adsorption of oxygen atoms on the zigzag stanene nano-ribbons deforms the helical edge states at the Fermi level whi…
Based on atomistic simulations, the nonlinear elastic properties of monolayer graphene nanoribbons under quasistatic uniaxial tension are predicted, emphasizing the effect of edge structures (armchair and zigzag, without and with hydrogen passivation). The results of atomistic simulations are interpreted within a theoretical framework of thermodynamics, which enables determination of the nonlinear functions for the strain-dependent edge energy and the hydrogen adsorption energy, for both zigzag and armchair edges. Due to the edge effects, the initial Young's modulus of graphene nanoribbons und…
The hybrid graphene - hexagonal boron nitride (G-hBN) systems offer new routes in the design of nanoscale electronic devices. Using {\it ab initio} density functional theory calculations we investigate the dynamics of zig-zag nanoribbons a few interatomic distances wide. Several structures are analyzed, namely pristine graphene, hBN and G-hBN systems. By passivating the nanoribbon edges with hydrogen and different halogen atoms, one may tune the electronic and mechanical properties, like the band gap energies and the natural frequencies of vibration.
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of zigzag bilayer phosphorene nanoribbons (ZBPNR). We first, draw an analogy between the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladder and ZBPNR edge states and obtain their corresponding band structure and wave functions analytically. Then, by applying the energy filtering method, we show that the electric power and thermoelectric efficiency of the ZBPNRs can be improved remarkably in the presence of mid-gap edge states. We also argue how to engineer the edge modes to further optimize thermoelectric power and efficiency of the system by …
Quantum confinement and interference often generate exotic properties in nanostructures. One recent highlight is the experimental indication of a magnetic phase transition in zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons at the critical ribbon width of about 7 nm [G. Z. Magda et al., Nature \textbf{514}, 608 (2014)]. Here we show theoretically that with further increase in the ribbon width, the magnetic correlation of the two edges can exhibit an intriguing oscillatory behavior between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic, driven by acquiring the positive coherence between the two edges to lower the free e…
We investigate the transport properties of pristine zigzag-edged borophene nanoribbons (ZBNRs) of different widths, using the fist-principles calculations. We choose ZBNRs with widths of 5 and 6 as odd and even widths. The differences of the quantum transport properties are found, where even-N BNRs and odd-N BNRs have different current-voltage relationships. Moreover, the negative differential resistance (NDR) can be observed within certain bias range in 5-ZBNR, while 6-ZBNR behaves as metal whose current rises with the increase of the voltage. The spin filter effect of 36% can be revealed whe…
A nonequilibrium Green's function technique combined with density functional theory is used to study the spin-dependent electronic band structure and transport properties of zigzag silicene nanoribbons (ZSiNRs) doped with aluminum (Al) or phosphorus (P) atoms. The presence of a single Al or P atom induces quasibound states in ZSiNRs that can be observed as new dips in the electron conductance. The Al atom acts as an acceptor whereas the P atom acts as a donor when it is placed at the center of the ribbon. This behavior is reversed when the dopant is placed on the edges. Accordingly, an accepto…
Transport of the edge-state electrons along zigzag phosphorene nanoribbons in presence of two impurities/vacancies is analytically investigated. Considering the places of the defects, a number of different situations are examined. When both defects are placed on the edge zigzag chain, as is expected, with changing the energy of the traveling electrons the electrical conductance exhibits a resonance behavior. In this case, for two vacancies the observed resonant peaks become extremely sharp. An amazing behavior is seen when the second vacancy is located along an armchair chain while the first i…
Very recently, it was demonstrated explicitly that a zigzag graphene nanoribbon (GNR) exhibits a crossover of conductance from G0 to G0/2 with increasing the length (G0 = 2e2/h is the quantum of conductance) even at room-temperature [Baringhaus, et al. Nature 506, 349 (2014)]. Such a result is puzzling as none of previous theories seem to match the experimental observations. Here, we propose a model to explain the crossover from double-channel to single-channel ballistic transport in zigzag GNR. The sp3 distortion of carbon atoms at the GNR edges induces a large spin-orbit coupling on the edge…
Thermoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons with periodic edge vacancies and antidot lattice are investigated. The electron-phonon interaction is taken into account in the framework of the Hubbard-Holstein model with the use of the Lang-Firsov unitary transformation scheme. The electron transmission function, the thermopower and the thermoelectric figure of merit are calculated. We have found that the electron-phonon interaction causes a decrease in the peak values of the thermoelectric figure of merit and the shift of the peak positions closer to the center of the bandgap. The effects a…
We studied the Klein paradox in zigzag (ZNR) and anti-zigzag (AZNR) graphene nanoribbons. Due to the fact that ZNR (the number of lattice sites across the nanoribbon (N is even) and AZNR (N is odd) configurations are indistinguishable when treated by the Dirac equation, we supplemented the model with a pseudo-parity operator whose eigenvalues correctly depend on the sublattice wavefunctions for the number of carbon atoms across the ribbon, in agreement with the tight-binding model. We have shown that the Klein tunneling in zigzag nanoribbons is related to conservation of the pseudo-parity rath…
Inspired by the successful synthesis of several allotropes, boron sheets have been one of the hottest spot areas of focus in various fields. Here, we study phonon transport in three types of boron nanoribbons with zigzag and armchair edges by using a non-equilibrium Green's function combined with first principles methods. Diverse transport properties are found in the nanoribbons. At the room temperature, their highest thermal conductance can be comparable with that of graphene, while the lowest thermal conductance is less than half of graphene's. The three boron sheets exhibit different anisot…
An antiferromagnetic insulating state has been found in the zigzag phosphorene nanoribbons (ZPNRs) from a comprehensive density functional theory calculations. Comparing with other one-dimensional systems, the magnetism in ZPNRs display several surprising characteristics: (i) the magnetic moments are antiparallel arranged at each zigzag edge; (ii) the magnetism is quite stable in energy (about 29 meV/magnetic-ion) and the band gap is big (about 0.7 eV); (iii) a moderate compressive strain will induce a magnetic to nonmagnetic as well as semiconductor to metal transition. All of these phenomena…
We present theoretical evidence, based on total-energy first-principles calculations, of the existence of spin-polarized states well localized at and extended along the edges of bare zigzag boron nitride nanoribbons. Our calculations predict that all the magnetic configurations studied in this work are thermally accessible at room temperature and present an energy gap. In particular, we show that the high spin state, with a magnetic moment of 1 $μ_B$ at each edge atom, presents a rich spectrum of electronic behaviors as it can be controlled by applying an external electric field in order to ob…
We investigate the spin-dependent electric and thermoelectric properties of ferromagnetic zigzag-graphyne nanoribbons (ZGNRs) using the density-functional theory combined with the non-equilibrium Green's function method. A giant magnetoresistance is obtained in the pristine even-width ZGNRs and can be as high as 10e6 %. However, for the doped systems, a large magnetoresistance behavior may appear in the odd-width ZGNRs rather than the even-width ones. This suggests that the magnetoresistance can be manipulated in a wide range by the dopants on edges of ZGNRs. Another interesting phenomenon is …
